The Edmonton Police Service is warning the public about an on-going computer scam known as ransomware. 8 c! R3 | ]+ x9 b

Ransomware is essentially a threat to your computer unless you pay an external company.

1 }* {$ r( p) X# M% x ?Several reports have been received by the EPS where computer users are claiming they are receiving pop-up messages asking for immediate payment otherwise they would be “locked out” of their computers. 7 P) p3 i; o- H6 V% ?2 e+ M
8 u) i$ U E6 u- T/ o; r0 ^+ YIt has been reported that these pop-up warning messages are claiming to come from a Canadian police or government agency. The message tells computer users to pay $100 via Ukash (a payment service provider) so that their computers can be “unlocked.”" _& V! f, U( [0 B% |3 F- K

“Often these pop-up messages appear after a user attempts to download something off the internet,” says Staff Sgt. Dan Service with Economic Crimes Section. “The download activates “malware” or a type of virus which creates a pop-up message asking for payment.” 6 b# j- R- v0 }! B$ N
. i3 E2 z/ X% d1 V. e9 ^Ransomware scams are designed to create shock and anxiety so computer users respond by sending money quickly to prevent being locked out of their computer. * n( {/ j. C8 {8 G4 f! t

If you receive one of these messages, please be aware that:
4 z; y! | h4 q' c7 r0 m, p. E/ q5 _' `/ i2 `0 E9 t
•the ransomware is an attempt to defraud you. 2 n2 ?" B- `$ m& @6 d' j V4 a2 z2 z
•sending money will not fix your computer – it will remain locked. DO NOT SEND MONEY.
% w* b8 s. F8 J5 m•neither police nor any Canadian government agency would hijack computers in order to obtain money. # y! u7 H; t+ |) X8 ?& h
•the ransomware is hard evidence that your computer has been infected by malicious software (malware) that must be dealt with.
8 B+ R/ J. f g: DThe recommended way to re-gain access to your computer is to seek the help of a computer technician who can remove the malware. 0 ~1 M. ]3 `; C) Y7 X% P+ B& V
# l1 W2 k/ i4 A) S0 h0 W4 x% o& YTo protect against cyber attacks, it is recommended to update your software regularly. You should have up-to-date anti-virus, spyware and firewall protection.
