One day, when I was a freshman in high school,; R8 }6 O) R0 j

His name was Kyle.

It looked like he was carrying all of his

I thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?; T( X1 Z2 m5 ?8 d- F- |+ j. ^

He must really be a nerd."

! p) L$ B: m* V H- `( bI had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.
+ c: V1 u( F" A. X4 g: k' ~& x5 a0 i9 k9 l! L2 C
As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.
N2 S+ V& f1 W9 X0 N* _: m) \/ ?+ g: l6 j1 s' ~9 W* Y
They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.6 I# n' r0 K7 e: y3 B# c) o
4 E1 C$ x4 l/ |& KHis glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.

He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes: H( b6 J7 r! y* c) i: K$ c
5 p5 L. ]- {& z( U' L8 g8 X! M
My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.# H+ b. k# s& b! T6 T
I+ z* R7 b2 N( B: @ [- v G, ?As I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.
0 u9 R# ~- P6 y7 P1 z' q7 e# Q. l- e5 l K# A/ z
They really should get lives.$ d& m& x' q) O" z; A7 g4 q7 W
8 y4 S# v$ [% \5 N- O+ Q. r$ b" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"0 ^7 f/ S; O2 c% t/ |1 J. F

There was a big smile on his face.) N1 \. p3 r. d

I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.

As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.

He said he had gone to private school before now.

2 E. r( X1 i y j) g% ]We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.5 {6 Z* K0 s/ r$ p/ [
# x% ^2 u+ j* XHe turned out to be a pretty cool kid.

I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.8 J+ Y9 v7 p( S. J' @1 [

: o3 i1 H! ` H0 W5 f' fWe hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.) P5 P& O2 S! a4 Z8 o

Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.

I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!! \6 D, \6 Y |1 D6 k

" He just laughed and handed me half the books.& D7 r! J3 p; u* a0 [5 {7 I# `
6 S" a [9 ~1 L$ oOver the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.8 `$ s+ N/ n) @- P

When we were seniors, we began to think" k N2 t2 g7 V! W

I teased him all the time about being a nerd.

I could see that he was nervous about his speech.

So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"" v" z1 L8 w* v

He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.

As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began* e# ^2 G: R5 ^. T

Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...' w. f7 V1 y+ i& _

He had planned to kill himself over the weekend.

My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."

I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.
