One day, when I was a freshman in high school,

His name was Kyle.

. s5 P( c4 R; B* A; BI thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?

He must really be a nerd."

; b4 O @; z) O$ s( o, QI had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.. M% q) f t/ c0 P

As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.
# s; t5 F9 s/ j- J- Q& L* D4 [1 r: D% R& o
They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.) S% K6 e1 q" k) x6 R
( O6 H; Z+ g; P3 E7 g; `6 e2 gHis glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.

He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes( }( N$ T8 `4 _5 m
# G+ N. y/ G/ r+ z# E0 e2 W% r8 _4 P
My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.! s. z/ F/ t* z+ z) k+ f
: o0 W" ]& ], q1 aAs I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.
, w2 k4 {7 Y8 }' y# o+ Z0 L1 L% M. _0 N1 ~0 b! K
They really should get lives.

" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"' j3 p) [, \. Z! J% J$ v

There was a big smile on his face.+ L9 W3 [- \( p
- h; I5 }5 d% yIt was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.

( q( Y' Z9 \% e5 D5 {8 A( Y/ MI helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.

As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.

He said he had gone to private school before now.$ Y* `- ?9 r! H: S3 v5 N

I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.

We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.

& W( H7 Q% i3 S4 u6 q9 Q+ _He turned out to be a pretty cool kid., }3 F: h$ ~4 p$ R% \" _
+ f5 p( M) j( D4 sI asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.0 O. @- H& h& C

He said yes.0 ^6 p, z' @. h! C7 j# a4 }9 t

We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.

( }1 B' \, g2 k7 ~& c2 G, `Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.

; D: b. U1 O! c" N- y$ K) l) MI stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!" K9 {3 e! t/ b# y: P$ x6 E

" He just laughed and handed me half the books.

' K- A+ `( V: I! c3 |Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.

Was going to Duke.

I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem." I" R- L& B& [7 o4 y! z

He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.

I teased him all the time about being a nerd.( Z* D) w V% @2 z/ ~+ P# r4 [4 h; F
' |/ f j& X" g/ OHe had to prepare a speech for graduation.( M0 j. N7 T) j7 y
3 ~) w) L: C2 g* lI was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak& A+ V7 t6 z' E' ]; t8 i I

Graduation day, I saw Kyle.2 r/ v" i0 o8 K5 x5 f/ D8 ?' g+ L5 j w

He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.$ v" e8 C0 e4 Q' |3 p( C

He had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.

I could see that he was nervous about his speech.

% Z: Z' L/ w$ ~9 E0 s3 ~So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"

# T& `1 ~. ?+ p. xHe looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.& d; O3 g4 w2 c" E

As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began* @0 g! v' `; y a) ]
. i' {6 a/ w! G8 a8 \5 c+ \"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.

8 G0 r* E: C! iYour parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...

My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."

I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.

1 H' l( N: H; e7 \ dI saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.

Not until that moment did I realize it's depth.

For better or for worse.
