You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,- q# k4 e1 h. d! N1 D
+ s0 v. C6 H1 r8 v. ?
I saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.
0 X+ d8 K3 Y; }8 t! `1 ^5 a# @5 {1 C6 n
His name was Kyle.
$ M! @' p0 q3 n
) A$ _. h6 e* o* m, F% ?# wIt looked like he was carrying all of his/ _& w  M& x( r' N
Books.
/ N# P4 |0 S0 ?2 H- }1 U& A0 [- O3 L0 H* ]- U' o0 P7 O$ w
I thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?# Y' b' E* u6 E8 s: Z: Y
6 R/ [8 M8 y1 @: T# U
He must really be a nerd."7 H( S7 x# M$ d5 A: g2 r2 }9 c1 U

0 p9 a% l0 p/ H- p8 F7 G1 _I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.& k" A4 }7 v/ e

  X5 Y5 X- b( c; P3 GAs I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.
, t1 W" i  E+ F' Y
7 p" Y  t$ T6 r+ K# Q! _- Y/ OThey ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.% h! Y+ q1 y/ G9 t. d% H7 ?( Y. i
" Q% Q  y1 `/ |# @% b
His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.
1 V1 ]' }/ h8 s4 y$ A. [/ B, P, O) z1 M1 {/ ?9 u
He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes
3 f, u& J, y+ Z+ D- {5 _
. T  _: _, b! y! x9 i, BMy heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.
" b; o; V0 E9 M" a0 ^! f+ N9 T* b
' y4 H6 U! o& tAs I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.6 U' }3 {. m6 T
0 N6 n. O" ~- a" {
They really should get lives.
0 K- K" X" g* N, |, M8 k% w: r1 }3 J8 V* g( p7 W! i: q
" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"
; o: V, m- N- t) k2 Q) `) Y; [- a0 G: r0 ?, |( e3 l
There was a big smile on his face.; B4 q; Y, b5 N% z; r. I

. f% E" h7 D* D3 E4 yIt was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.
  ~: B2 W, _* `0 I- \& ^
. X* x4 S" d: z9 W0 V8 mI helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.# _- z! S6 y  r; Q% w1 r

; Q. U/ O" S/ [9 q) u7 |! gAs it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.1 E, @+ [* f! ]! X, i( |7 q
! L" X5 O9 g, p1 W# H
He said he had gone to private school before now.
/ a  P) o( o. `* c+ b
* m+ n# u. Y; E* q- I. ]I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.
* c' p; D+ J0 @4 q2 o( M% d# R  t7 G8 g0 r# D. u
We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.* A0 G7 P$ Q; f* d7 f6 X

6 F* S( V$ v9 J- qHe turned out to be a pretty cool kid.
0 G. d4 x5 O3 ~8 c$ S
# n5 k1 A( c, `( _. }1 zI asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.7 p0 u3 l' `9 l" M3 Q7 v; E. P
, L2 n4 F  L: C6 l8 y. L& z4 X. f
He said yes.
8 Z- ^. q4 P+ c( n
7 g% U9 H6 E! |! r' DWe hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.
( J: \% Q, ?  ]  r0 }
* x6 r* c; g8 [" L5 cMonday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.' @6 ]- {. x6 G8 J/ g* @/ K
  [) R0 \% ?9 |0 ^3 v
I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!
3 l! E& v% K3 E+ I# {  I0 X! }1 W) u5 F! y% N
" He just laughed and handed me half the books.
8 d; M) h: L7 j8 \6 H
& [' t$ x- A: i; sOver the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.4 ]$ Q! _/ C. [& Y1 t1 x! q7 B

% k4 P8 S9 O7 H; }When we were seniors, we began to think
2 ^& ~" j! O% o  w, T4 L1 b3 g  xAbout college.
6 d) x' B) X% N) c* j& y4 r4 e) H; y+ G" k# S
Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I6 o' U( O4 I# m
Was going to Duke.
" ?8 B+ V. q7 C$ [  ^, k, u4 `7 h" s  \  A5 W, S. P
I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.0 i- e9 m7 K. B5 c
8 e  _' r/ A) Y8 c  v
He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.0 `# w5 Y( M! X) \* ~5 V& Q
( v8 O$ o( a5 p
Kyle was valedictorian of our class.) o) f* Y$ H: x# {

1 _5 Q$ [7 z5 pI teased him all the time about being a nerd.6 Z- J9 N' q( ~7 b1 E

( I8 F0 @0 s7 q( z4 {8 I2 qHe had to prepare a speech for graduation.+ n3 a. D* O/ Z# u/ c6 s

7 R# j: W2 ~& K+ [) f& C% ~5 |I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak
5 \0 q1 b9 h/ }& ]1 H2 b7 S) r$ R' F" [" Y# e$ G# Z( K, {) ?( M
Graduation day, I saw Kyle.- o# E! x: C$ i4 @* W4 G" B7 w
* |' _$ G' c  W. M
He looked great.
; c. Q1 e7 V: o# a; b! X
: |6 E8 R- |% @+ Q! R; W6 N% hHe was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.3 B7 F8 q! U' v" d

/ ]& ?! N. I( {  vHe filled out and actually looked good in glasses.
  k& [& R4 e2 D, k2 ~- ?4 l
+ e' S+ {/ \5 WHe had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.! P9 t) p0 J% k. G( f4 a
( u2 K  m4 e: D. J6 D
Boy, sometimes I was jealous.6 y) t6 H% m& y

2 Y: i0 F4 d2 jToday was one of those days.! `2 Q: E; R3 Q3 e/ [! Y5 y

: e2 _( o" z1 u5 O. T7 hI could see that he was nervous about his speech.
! d7 D6 \. u6 j7 B( `
2 G5 P8 I/ l; }: l1 b( F$ I, G2 B8 U4 DSo, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"8 G6 x. |5 T# r  X! y5 C

% v# E! \0 j0 }1 `" O! c, N! {He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.
; N" e6 _! C$ D% z; i
8 t: N3 _, p# w. O"Thanks," he said.. i0 h  b; Q9 x% S
) c! g: U, c) L. E' o
As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began( D/ z/ I' z& U; R3 v
  S3 U2 W. v/ Z# _8 b0 o
"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.
: f& i) D8 L  l# ^
, ?4 ~4 k$ R  D  MYour parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...
1 ?0 C1 [, \2 r2 s, {$ _/ Z
& [0 L9 Q4 n; k+ CI am here to tell all of you that being a" M  S/ |# ~* {  y/ [: ~$ i
Friend to someone is the best gift you can give them.' v/ U+ F0 K% h. d4 o

; \: `) \7 b' b( k& U( f3 m1 ]/ }I am going to tell you a story."
* M2 B$ b" G" D
( D/ g9 a+ f# V0 M  PI just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.
; S3 k/ Y) }9 w
; `/ G) H" L% l) g; gHe had planned to kill himself over the weekend.
4 Z% H6 M, b. c+ [$ ]  ?7 D  `2 T. P: Q  H" I' G+ P; ]; D, e
He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.+ @5 X- ]! g4 a3 e) s6 ]4 \
/ g5 p( x1 ]7 w4 ^! O; c: l
He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.
! }2 V" M/ u7 x4 `7 h; N; G1 J
: [# p  q# e. H( ?  B"Thankfully, I was saved.
& W$ ?' d2 P4 g4 [5 V) @  E( o4 w
6 q: p, n% x0 y4 nMy friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."
9 P/ m7 ~: |, ?" I8 D. z, _- ]0 l! d
I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.
" n8 i! }* E- B' z
5 G5 S" w& |8 u' G$ F* ^; ?$ OI saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.
/ i" g/ b) _7 G. g
' i5 K; g( i7 z2 Y; e3 C: [3 t1 QNot until that moment did I realize it's depth.
8 T, q9 S9 U1 t9 f1 [: K0 F  j) i& w. X3 q
Never underestimate the power of your actions.
6 W6 I4 a9 G9 I$ P$ c! l( `/ `
With one small gesture you can change a person's life.
6 N8 T" I0 c* c  n+ [( H( \4 ~7 m2 m; y! n
For better or for worse.
2 ^* z. v/ D% h+ I. C( B
' C; a3 l+ L6 zGod puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.
  _; b9 i& g6 h: ]0 I0 U, b5 G3 X. U
0 `) o2 S- W: q  s/ O+ |Look for God in others.' ]  u& ^" y; [3 G

4 \1 H# m! u7 z4 Q$ u8 P8 ]2 x- L8 ^You now have two choices, you can:
6 ~1 C' M' l4 e! Y2 x7 @4 z+ r; p5 I1 w6 a  B
1) Pass this on to your friends or
* x1 j9 m8 E8 g" F
* m5 o' b* _; E- j3 @* h3 K- y2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart., S" \2 m% e2 I* A

, P" Y' _& H/ P7 r2 |# K/ T* \As you can see, I took choice number 1.
# \+ ^! V7 t' s' j- o& N: D% q"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."
. m, A; t' d* d% P8 Q4 m+ e
$ r6 E1 r- b. ]& yThere is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.
" e$ v+ K  [6 V* Q+ F
7 j4 R0 W8 o! @+ Y6 `. ^7 e; kTomorrow is mystery.
4 J. C, ?! v5 T( q6 n2 a) F, U* F9 B' u) V* u
Today is a gift.! }0 D# V% Y, s( [" E$ ~. m
