Speed and power, without compromise. That’s how I’d sum up my impression: S% q" F* W( [/ R! g
of the new Nikon D800. Established medium-format image quality is( I7 D8 j$ U6 Y9 s2 Q
now inside a phenomenal, incredibly responsive Nikon machine. At 36.3
9 G) t& _( h6 L; ~! t: u( N6 p! fmegapixels, the D800 produces unprecedented image quality and resolution, ^: V# p N) K$ }( k8 W) A' e( I6 N
within a body that boasts revolutionary technological advances. The 3D color1 a4 w$ q9 |3 ^
matrix metering III, wide dynamic range and the improved AF performance3 s" v3 |( J. i6 _; Q3 `/ s- {1 ]) s
in low light are just a few features that are glaring improvements. The D800" q g6 O, b( L& D9 V6 ]
allows me to concentrate on the light, the composition and my subject$ |4 x! c4 L7 `4 T5 N4 W
without having to think about much else. In years past, wedding photography3 ?: F3 K$ T0 l7 v
was traditionally captured with medium-format equipment for maximum
9 {2 o0 j7 f/ ?3 ?) A1 F5 cimage quality. When the 35mm format was adopted within the genre, it was
4 D$ N7 r( Y: b( w9 J& G6 U: wwidely accepted that image quality was compromised in lieu of speed and) m: K+ Y& c1 W0 B; n
convenience. Now, my wedding portraiture will have a depth it’s never shown$ O4 R: p" |* s* W. f$ M- a' b
before, and my style of shooting will be enhanced rather than compromised,
9 L5 [ d" e. Q4 Qthanks to the D800.
7 @. @: ^; \/ w5 f- k/ \9 D% K4 `3 s+ l5 ^When I’m shooting beauty and jewelry in the studio or fashion on location,( }( A! m& k# R( N- z2 N) k, O q
36.3 megapixels changes the industry standard: in image quality, dynamic2 v: c% G& y9 H) L( u8 f
range, color rendering and the final print. The detail from the D800 produces
2 D' }& x: Z" _$ gthe look of a medium-format camera, but gives me the feel and response of a' x2 X' n7 ], ?( L8 f/ S, R) [* _
D-SLR. The improvements in rendering skin tone and specular highlights, as7 e* c9 R0 s7 N2 }9 M* {; a+ e( F' ~
well as fabric and hair detail are superior to anything that has come before.
) ?$ n: ]' u/ r+ cAutofocus quickly tracks models in motion. Nikon’s 91K-pixel RGB sensor
Z" g( w/ S, b4 b$ Nhas noticeable improvements in metering accuracy, while the larger LCD is
, Y5 a; m' a$ i* x$ ?; z7 @. _easier to read. The camera body feels solid and ergonomically simple, while; ^+ r/ e2 P. I6 S8 i; h
also feeling lighter and smaller than previous high-resolution Nikons. New
4 V$ X* ?, C& o" vcameras always inspire me to test and explore, and all the useful features5 d7 A8 V+ u* N+ l3 Z2 d/ F- }' ^
in such a compact package will open huge creative possibilities for my highquality* f6 M, P/ o- N/ d
prints and video.
% ]/ ~; N' n' ~- w& }" z5 bTo me, cameras are more like paintbrushes than technology. The goal is
3 T* d6 `& s+ q2 ] O4 W% Tnot megapixels or technique but the image, and while camera models+ V* H1 s, H, l& Z
are important, they are not the be-all or end-all. But after a lifetime using
# n' L& i8 C9 A. r3 vcountless cameras, I have found a new best friend. It was not love at first
5 J9 d: M0 |9 i2 dsight. The sharpness and detail were initially intimidating, exposing my flaws
" C+ L& r2 C: G; \3 i; \; U n0 glike never before. Subtle camera movements showed and differences of
( Z. ?+ O- Y+ L7 ~2 C$ ?) Lacuity between aperture choices on various lenses were apparent. But now I! u7 m/ P5 j7 Z& t" Q+ z2 P' ~
am enthralled with this technology. Why? Because the images almost feel as
/ r# C% Q: @) ], k$ @' D& Ethough they were made with a 4x5 view camera! Special features like timelapse0 {2 z& f$ X# d
photography and the improved HD video quality and flexibility also add$ J! |/ ~8 \5 j0 q
tremendously to the camera’s personality. After spending a month with the
. u( c- H% G4 x* ^D800, I’ll never be the same again. Perhaps the best compliment I can express0 b) D+ A5 l: _& h
is that now I will think differently about the images I make.$ V$ b. }7 D( G: Y
As a modern architectural photographer I am always looking for a lightweight,

clean, clear and sharp files. This camera gives me the photographic flexibility
; F( |1 q3 g6 d* P8 Wto work at unusual shooting locations and capture images in an exceptional& i- t9 v% R+ j1 l
range of light. It definitely takes my photographic versatility and image quality
