that we cannot support imposing a UBB business model on wholesale Internet, d" w& L; K8 @5 c4 ]
service providers.

Our government recognizes that the Internet and digital technologies are+ B0 @& Z0 q Q- m+ W9 s: i
an increasingly important part of everyday life—including driving0 w0 t0 U" {( g+ l% e9 h
innovation, commerce and social interaction. As the government develops
1 L3 K( h* O% I+ uCanada’s first comprehensive Digital Economy Strategy, we need to look
2 D4 [4 `* p; F, k7 @ }) m5 _carefully at how issues like UBB affect the big picture. We will be
3 I4 C. L' p9 G( p7 l6 {; M2 Cguided by our long-standing policies of encouraging competition and
3 }% `9 y* S0 z, Zinvestment, increasing consumer choice, minimizing regulation and allowing9 l' m1 Q) N6 p- c7 P; u
market forces to prevail.
7 E& v* p/ ~) v5 e+ \+ Z' T& f3 V! }: V* c/ F4 C% ?9 C
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has" G$ |% p# {8 u) b) O4 n' v
chosen to examine these concerns that the government shares with a large% R+ r( u" u/ h! d1 R# O( M
number of Canadians. Details of the CRTC consultation are available at* o' S' Y1 r6 H9 f3 X: p

4 J6 h7 M5 N: j+ dWhen the CRTC reaches a final decision following its consultations, the

: Q$ y* d- x) Eline with the best interests of Canadian consumers and encourages* ?0 D' C4 c' y, l
competition among internet service providers. I will be recommending that) A7 H- b* ^1 d3 |$ Y) g
