on the issues that matter. Prime Minister Harper and I have been clear; P" o4 L% J s/ Y& \8 L I# |
that we cannot support imposing a UBB business model on wholesale Internet
" P/ u8 U% z0 q# [0 |2 tservice providers.9 u( U C$ c# t3 e% T C
, |1 I# A& C( i$ c R
Our government recognizes that the Internet and digital technologies are
9 l, j3 p/ s. Q" P2 I( Can increasingly important part of everyday life—including driving
" j5 A2 {# H; q3 n4 h4 b4 g) `innovation, commerce and social interaction. As the government develops
4 b5 I/ J& d4 J) S0 ^+ |Canada’s first comprehensive Digital Economy Strategy, we need to look) ` g( E8 w1 S: t: X
carefully at how issues like UBB affect the big picture. We will be+ b6 B( J L3 Y
guided by our long-standing policies of encouraging competition and7 j1 c% L# J7 o2 c4 h3 U% B
investment, increasing consumer choice, minimizing regulation and allowing4 z, K1 {1 u3 e
market forces to prevail.

9 ]1 X! R# {1 V- KThe Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has
: u& J* b" f! a% b1 ~# e. Vchosen to examine these concerns that the government shares with a large% @$ v8 f/ y/ t9 J6 f/ K
number of Canadians. Details of the CRTC consultation are available at" l8 L8 V. B5 _1 |; B1 p1 i6 h

: A8 _4 i1 _" P a8 Mline with the best interests of Canadian consumers and encourages
( P$ y) A, @; Z+ D @competition among internet service providers. I will be recommending that" j1 a+ u) |5 X/ _8 `; A3 H' R
any decision counter to these foundational principles be reversed.2 ? ?9 S5 e- `5 z! n c
