请教former & previous 的使用

第一次听到previously 是在desperate housewife, 每集片头都有回顾，回顾都是previously开头，以为学到了好词，可有一天要表达“以前的学生”时GOOGLE才发现这儿不用previous， 而是former, 忙来请教各位专家，这2词如何使用？
