The Valachian Plain and Maritsa Valley form two small, fingerlike lowlands reaching eastward into the Balkan Peninsula from the Black Sea, flanking the Stara Planina on both sides. The Valachian Plain measures only about 300 by 125 kilometers in size, a typical European dimension. Valachia has witnessed the MBT comings and goings of a great variety of invaders and migrating peoples, including the Huns, Slavs, Magyars, and Mongols. Today, the Valachian Plain is the heartland of the MBT Shoes Romanians, who have somehow managed to preserve a language derived from the Roman armies, perpetuating an isolated eastern bastion of Romance speech.
+ m0 ?( u, h6 s7 i; V* oThe Po-Veneto Plain of northern Italy, rimmed by the Alps and Appen-nini, is the only sizable plains area in that country. MBT It represents a continuation of the structural depression containing the Adriatic Sea, filled to above the level of the sea with materials brought down from the surrounding mountains by streams and ice. Glaciers moving down into the fringe of the Po-Veneto MBT Shoes Plain from the north deposited moraines, which dammed up the mouths of tributary Alpine valleys, creating a chain of beautiful natural lakes, including Como, Maggiore, Lugano, Iseo, and Garda. South of the moraine dams is an infertile outwash plain, beyond which lies the greater part of the PO-Veneto vibram fivefingers Plain, an area of fertile, river-deposited soils. At the juncture of alluvium and outwash, the groundwater table reaches the surface, resulting in an east-west line of springs called fontanili. From ancient times, the fontanili attracted human settlement, and today a row of cities, including Torino and Milano, traces the course of the spring sites. Still another line of cities, vibram five fingers including Parma, Modena, and Bologna, lies along the southern edge of the plain, at the foot of the Appennini. The western, uppermost part of the plain served as the political nucleus of Italian unification in the nineteenth century, and today the same area contains the industrial heart of the nation. |
