The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned 4 C$ F, d/ ~! P, k3 o U
to their first ministry, to reopen a church 9 ?( o& H* _5 o# L
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
: s5 M7 ]9 D% R: }+ l0 y1 Nexcited about their opportunities. When they saw , w/ S& h% \6 s& c* A8 M( G
their church, it was very run down and needed
5 p- L2 Y, b2 D7 q5 F: e7 z1 X& f% dmuch work. They set a goal to have everything
( J8 O r! y0 @done in time to have their first service
4 { r8 Y6 @$ s5 k! U# y* y' x& O6 ^on Christmas Eve.
$ v! C/ x; C8 B: k/ i& hT hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,* N9 C9 Q& O$ k
painting, etc, and on December 18
% _9 ]1 J/ U0 F: Xwere ahead of schedule and just about finished.
% a4 o0 e: U! W( w" H& E7 m: aO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
- r9 D+ M6 x5 q3 ^8 s# Urainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
+ a7 o& v9 n& {; N! i O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
) M' d5 j" Y" LHis heart sank when he saw that the roof had
# u* ]. F K' B& Wleaked, causing a large area of plaster about
4 x7 K Q- ^* y9 g# s20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall # K& n& s5 Z ? s% s8 P, z% [) U
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, * A1 u6 F8 ~3 M' M8 `0 R
beginning about head high. & w8 A8 r q% X) A5 H# @7 J2 R9 ~
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
^: c0 X7 ]3 B3 u5 E( ^1 `- P& f Zand not knowing what else to do but postpone
/ i0 z2 ]7 [" Q Lthe Christmas Eve service, headed home.
6 B1 N3 A8 Q8 WOn the way he noticed that a local business was
2 Z/ k0 q7 ?- e( _9 Thaving a flea market type sale for charity, so he
3 L& B" \3 w' }" ostopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
; Q- }( F& b- q$ c( D& a3 Yhandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth / ^# `, Z- K0 Z
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
4 G5 x9 Z, U; ] ^# D3 Zembroidered right in the center. It was just
8 I$ J. e# C. U9 P: s2 s 9 r7 n* P& m; r, A- U1 R3 K. N. Q
0 S# v+ R9 I1 H+ e5 L # d( b: E4 u6 v% |7 `0 A$ l* I
; Y7 D+ u6 p c! L5 \ + G5 x& N' Y' p' ]% T8 f& [; R
) x$ c# [1 \" K/ f6 kthe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. 6 w# g$ h9 D) Y9 t' }4 |- I
B y this time it had started to snow. An older 1 ^- l; ?1 S% o9 F
woman running from the opposite direction was
6 F/ j* }. v, ]% t) Etrying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor 9 V. c+ }+ K# o- L( |5 C$ w8 @
invited her to wait in the warm church for : s0 S7 S5 Y( A
the next bus 45 minutes later.
7 s" p% a& `- q/ r8 M9 B/ p
; ^9 L7 q, s+ d! w' }1 D! fShe sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
: j8 |7 Z8 K+ bwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
0 I4 z( a3 ]% V8 Z7 }up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
w- M# s2 W' _4 j! P' |7 O0 t0 ccould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
$ D: Q* @7 j1 c. K6 s7 AT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
/ ~3 D" o' v8 b6 W& a4 }/ T9 x! saisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"+ B- q- n N/ F6 n3 T+ x
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" + f# `, c b" r
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check( u5 T2 S' g3 }9 q1 @
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
+ H+ ?4 h; N8 J! C% Z1 f7 Y/ bit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
N( s% {# Q" d! g5 pmade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
9 K7 Z4 E! _& y, U1 NT he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
; F* w4 s7 _; h5 X& Ytold how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The 0 b: H' D: R; `" a8 x; J4 L
woman explained that before the war she and
- D* [6 L7 |$ R" q9 Uher husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
/ T, Y9 H/ @ P; i Z3 b; x5 y# J8 A f& d
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. & y# C u$ x' G* c$ |2 n
Her husband was going to follow her the next week.
. `* s/ Y* K- n" M! M: ~He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her , a+ @# H5 z& _) }
husband or her home again. % z2 f9 E7 ]" t
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
4 t- o; e* } P6 H! _; Ibut she made the pastor keep it for the church.
6 r9 j: @8 P2 z1 ~The pastor insisted on driving her home. That
* |" A! C! t- @* h$ M8 n' gwas the least he could do. She lived on the other
3 S2 n: K6 s3 l7 v& }* _$ ~side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn ' Z3 `) F. g! g! x! K" F! @' c0 B' h
for the day for a housecleaning job.
" O. G! ^( X; H) dW hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas + t5 p8 u$ |' M) V5 }
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the & O" F ]' E7 E9 }7 j. U4 J
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the
6 u% b8 [9 D# V" F: T. qpastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door & `: V$ M6 _, `
and many said that they would return.. 9 ^0 A9 I6 j! R! O6 l8 ?
One older man, whom the pastor recognized 3 `1 Q. f* |* N7 y, w
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
& @! k5 P, y- p' N) c+ J4 O- |5 rpews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
2 B/ W8 z( {) Y4 Y. b/ swasn't leaving.
, R+ [$ N6 l; c9 ^' a; x" Y( k8 ~# [The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
* R) `0 `1 I8 q7 Hthe front wall because it was identical to one
: i- ~; U @# u7 f% p5 B; ?that his wife had made years ago when , b) o* v r _( o% Y5 R. T/ @8 u, m
they lived in Austria before the war and how
' l" O; X0 E3 L4 X- A& s8 Ecould there be two tablecloths so much alike? * A7 U- v4 l4 N8 s7 F
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
) T, X5 {0 t) p9 A! k \# aforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was ' Y; ~5 x7 y$ I4 Q2 q% U
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and! P6 W- r. ]2 U% L. W( Y
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home
- o/ B2 K: ^ S- {* magain all the 35 years between. : f9 }4 D' H* C3 h; S9 G
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
$ [" P8 F: ]5 H! N( N( @take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten 5 ]5 c h& z2 J8 w
Island and to the same house where the pastor - L) K% J2 N# ]
had taken the woman three days earlier.
- }# {8 o3 g; `+ uHe helped the man climb the three flights of1 M0 _0 ?6 |' K+ G+ \. A. \
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on/ N- j% T! ?5 L: Q/ p; i
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas ; I$ ?, U! { x- c: b" I+ G7 W
reunion he could ever imagine.* o% ^& S" Z) e' A+ z" J
