The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned
( n7 F7 } ?0 T1 j X9 T9 mto their first ministry, to reopen a church
/ C, O3 m' G0 o6 m' t8 v" f% pin suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
6 i5 n% N1 A# C( L8 r l: X' Gexcited about their opportunities. When they saw ( U8 l5 Q1 F7 h8 ^6 B
their church, it was very run down and needed * R$ N. z; P$ _9 Y8 s7 |
much work. They set a goal to have everything * u% f8 @3 x! K' x9 S
done in time to have their first service
# W+ O+ r( Q6 Y' yon Christmas Eve.
' ~! ]( H- W7 bT hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls, b% _# k0 r; ], \; X! `. w
painting, etc, and on December 18 3 c. s3 N* j. l; a" p0 q$ w# c
were ahead of schedule and just about finished.
' g) H R; I/ g- {' R# _O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving , {) \$ F: g" R' N8 z
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
3 Y% L& ?3 s" }! Q) `" L& C O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.0 c9 n' L" {. x3 j$ ^5 t
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had1 |" p0 \7 A5 ?
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about * c6 A& |, L4 i! J
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall 1 B0 h: `1 M: a' E' t
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
& m& e8 z1 B [' C# k7 nbeginning about head high.
- W3 H- f( o( _4 n& O6 \4 _. D' QT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
; B; I) u" n0 L- ]8 dand not knowing what else to do but postpone $ w* o: F* l4 D2 o0 J. y4 o
the Christmas Eve service, headed home.
, Z. |" P' R4 X+ mOn the way he noticed that a local business was ) L+ s8 z& f7 X3 m! _. I i
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he 9 R: c0 e; A8 T3 P6 I
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
1 V- l ?* _. Rhandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth ! H% U' u4 d& i$ @! Q
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
: Z( Z: o( \& Z; |, \4 K0 Hembroidered right in the center. It was just
$ a! n% X3 x1 n% K
+ A* u( M& D% N$ r+ ]8 }. [- v. v5 P$ @
8 R6 u/ I2 W o* Y; B7 i
" M& X6 A# c8 i& k% E% Z$ w 2 [9 S, l: ?0 S. K* h1 X w- T
) ]+ }+ I: B8 E( rthe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
# ?4 Z6 h5 T i7 w9 }- j. X" VB y this time it had started to snow. An older 0 n& B: r: M( k, a% X3 Y
woman running from the opposite direction was
) F Y1 i& s% l6 b. Y, n) f! }trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor / X K$ m: E/ Y, z
invited her to wait in the warm church for
; `4 R9 j7 ^+ w' a/ pthe next bus 45 minutes later.

8 l. d- R% X+ y- h: R) J9 C% f9 } RShe sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
8 y6 T/ `5 e+ J+ _* D, M2 ?4 mwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put . L8 c W' k$ g. s: a
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
5 K, z& o5 y* k( F9 M, N2 ^, c) E: Gcould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
3 Q5 c% `: G1 |' I0 r1 tT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center. X9 T- j% }4 d9 N
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
- i! O' w Y% v0 x7 s3 Ashe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" ' W, s8 E: a9 f- y' A7 j
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
- Q$ q6 g* b' G4 r2 ]" v7 G# ~# _the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
' ^& U; e: w4 |+ A2 vit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
8 G h$ b+ c, }" @; [made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . : Q* Y( e6 k' ]1 H* A( Y8 v+ Q
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor $ A" z3 Q: f. F' }! A
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The ! [! ~! k& k. t6 Q# C; B
woman explained that before the war she and
" S; D5 W$ _9 z- Y5 }) i( Wher husband were well-to-do people in Austria . - n. u8 f: C* r2 p
8 d- Z" s+ B3 G( VWhen the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
4 u- B$ c+ c/ Z; e: H+ mHer husband was going to follow her the next week. & w9 m( R, f0 j/ u2 P; e) M6 d; c
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
. o) Z( E1 V @3 Z8 _' T9 Shusband or her home again. : M' C& L; v$ M7 i; }2 v
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;! t: y1 _- q8 b; N6 z
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.
# w/ ^0 ]7 F0 ?. m) c U+ \The pastor insisted on driving her home. That( f0 K( U `3 X5 o! r. u/ W
was the least he could do. She lived on the other" G5 G% z( d# x) ?# E
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn 7 ~3 q) s9 I" B1 C. \/ O
for the day for a housecleaning job.6 u2 B6 }+ \7 s: {1 S& l
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas 8 g4 m2 s$ `. c" z+ i9 Y
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the
& j% j7 [: f" ^) X4 J, kspirit were great. At the end of the service, the
0 f# Y6 ]( t% [" F# gpastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door ! D( h; `8 E/ G. W
and many said that they would return.. 4 m$ d3 c9 q- Q/ t- G
One older man, whom the pastor recognized ) O4 _- d" a9 E$ z
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
3 ^- }# J+ |5 ~& q1 ]: a$ ]pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
3 q. [: r9 N# v4 rwasn't leaving.
k4 {' G& G/ R# j1 h) xThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on ; {3 `8 p& y. R2 N4 _
the front wall because it was identical to one
6 M$ X7 B, T0 l) Gthat his wife had made years ago when
; ?2 }5 Q3 y2 Y) a( M2 Vthey lived in Austria before the war and how ' o& g+ {# B5 p
could there be two tablecloths so much alike? / v6 r& @( F$ T- D8 S
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
. G& p9 r& j2 hforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
& q& W- {4 P1 |, L! ]( \supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
7 }7 M! e; i$ b* I' O5 Gput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home
: G R) H; ?$ o0 V8 fagain all the 35 years between. ; c! J6 W! j0 V8 i7 I3 C! e
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to 3 l5 d4 L# @5 ~* ?, l
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
3 i5 L: J& ^. ?. N* g& CIsland and to the same house where the pastor . b6 D0 r/ L4 O n4 V! s
had taken the woman three days earlier. ! C5 {$ r8 ?& w& I/ t! u
He helped the man climb the three flights of( J9 M9 \/ Z# c2 G) K" y
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
% F4 Z! ~7 N$ ]# k9 b0 }% X* zthe door and he saw the greatest Christmas ' j! |2 n- G/ C
reunion he could ever imagine.
