 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned ; [5 {/ M4 {( Y0 i+ a# ^! |
to their first ministry, to reopen a church
4 }" e( j; |+ \! B& hin suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October K, t0 k0 _3 {
excited about their opportunities. When they saw
5 E6 I) b3 y0 w. u% X! d! dtheir church, it was very run down and needed
* _3 ~5 P: i# I u( M! ?much work. They set a goal to have everything
# M' L. o7 Z7 Z, h" gdone in time to have their first service
5 j( N; u ~' c6 s* c) e' Aon Christmas Eve. ' z- N3 l- D9 M0 ?) ` o
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
/ N$ l% s K; t* \painting, etc, and on December 18
; R3 a- G @8 A3 G* v: z! R. `were ahead of schedule and just about finished. + x0 C0 T9 u( x
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving 5 a2 e" n) o: j
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. 9 |7 r5 i4 \2 ]( E. s' C4 w
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
6 }7 F8 ^" i6 hHis heart sank when he saw that the roof had
: K+ n) A" o& a3 uleaked, causing a large area of plaster about
9 C/ s) j* W l9 A% Q" K- |5 g20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
3 J h0 N- r) T5 Z1 eof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, . ?2 S A! v: M0 O+ E7 G5 i0 e
beginning about head high. 4 |, b$ n" ]+ a& U- _, }/ E. ?
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
, B9 a( z9 {0 {* C+ t2 H. z+ Nand not knowing what else to do but postpone ! F0 N9 u; l L( A
the Christmas Eve service, headed home. 3 ]4 r; u4 N- Z0 |2 k
On the way he noticed that a local business was ( C* k3 \$ e+ G6 Q7 Q# R% z. w- Q$ X
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he
1 f4 `; L6 O4 H3 c( pstopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
3 U1 G* L2 ? bhandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth 1 l5 X0 U" \! R
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross ' z4 @# A0 q9 O( f$ y. \7 Z( b6 ?# h
embroidered right in the center. It was just 6 T- @3 n! j1 d6 ~' }! i' f! w
% R1 M6 J/ I' d
4 b, i! ~! `+ O( u& W
, O' n% N- B, d `) Q: _7 ]6 ~% Y8 |
o, e! ?) R: c- ^
4 `' M0 `! T# qthe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. * m: d0 C7 x$ L& T4 `5 w
B y this time it had started to snow. An older . W1 t- m1 P$ H% z( ~- ~% S
woman running from the opposite direction was 7 ?$ \/ B5 Z3 [, s$ h& E% e
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor 2 d6 D, T! W- C3 u, }- K, P' ?
invited her to wait in the warm church for
1 m( K6 Y& q: E8 W3 G! R7 |! gthe next bus 45 minutes later.
/ z3 ?7 H5 `. i3 W$ s- f) m8 b0 y9 O, q# Z( r
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
, E1 u4 d& C# H _1 a g$ j' Gwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put - F8 ?( O" d" c9 C, i: D& `
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
) m9 X) ~4 c# r8 }% w' m% Ncould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
, |0 l# f/ c: y8 I: cT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
2 _* l; B1 t4 ~8 r3 f* faisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
* c; \* N4 ]1 J) vshe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" " u! ]0 d2 z3 `
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
7 Z, S1 S1 P- J; K9 _the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into* J" h' h0 G% Y3 X" r
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had ) W) K4 t R2 x4 M7 [) R5 I
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . $ h4 l6 Q4 \ U" A% D/ }3 t
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
5 R+ e+ ~- P6 ]* ptold how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The 7 I A1 ?4 e! L* U, p: K' g
woman explained that before the war she and # R- ^$ t0 u% c/ \3 P Z
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
" A; X, e8 A' w2 |2 s- O, f( ?3 d4 {* G5 D" M8 H5 ?0 Y8 \5 R6 Q
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. * T& Q8 P% M8 \" G9 x4 \7 f# L
Her husband was going to follow her the next week. 5 u9 {# W$ I+ z! ~9 u
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
+ K7 ^4 p5 q' `5 n4 c* S. @; b* o4 [ Khusband or her home again.
" @% `5 G" x/ V. RT he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
& I7 ^" S- a$ _$ A# T0 i9 ^9 x; I# mbut she made the pastor keep it for the church.+ k6 }% q8 S( ]" U$ u( B
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That" W' [5 p. B& B2 [
was the least he could do. She lived on the other
* P" L; u! ^2 aside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
4 Q5 q# u8 h/ W: v0 c+ J* C8 ]for the day for a housecleaning job.
' R2 ^5 y3 ?7 u. mW hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas 3 [8 \, Y% r. H
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the
0 m3 L. b$ a4 Gspirit were great. At the end of the service, the 9 b( u$ v9 I0 P; |; U! v9 {
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door % h7 g& w6 E" P0 o% t8 ?
and many said that they would return..
/ R) b2 H8 K. B( l$ ]One older man, whom the pastor recognized ' ~; Y8 }. c# g/ w4 N \' H* F
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
6 ^ E$ X' c1 C* u1 w) F- H$ apews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
% _) [, k8 R) I% N9 a$ rwasn't leaving. & G1 ~: e, Q# j F0 \. _+ I
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on 5 u$ U& J. ^4 d2 c& V" \/ w" r/ s
the front wall because it was identical to one ! o# m1 A- v1 a O# C5 [+ ~, E
that his wife had made years ago when
6 K3 |! X7 j4 a3 h+ |they lived in Austria before the war and how " e! I# G, q' s/ e2 x+ Y
could there be two tablecloths so much alike?
& w/ T: L( {5 G* }5 i SH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he 4 A( \: _9 ^+ B8 \% h7 ^
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was , `- f- @6 _$ b/ r3 F5 {
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
# _3 s! d" J( r0 u# |: s+ Rput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home) v W8 V. U: _% w
again all the 35 years between. 9 N; N2 f! h4 F, W- U+ u
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
0 r U& J# u1 n; k3 f( |3 otake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
9 s0 X0 B- a0 Y! v% o& {Island and to the same house where the pastor
" y4 ~, P7 O: U4 y( ohad taken the woman three days earlier.
4 S* Q( h) u( y) j; k4 }2 SHe helped the man climb the three flights of* I1 u2 Z9 m, Q% N* ]: G7 D9 w
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
! {# z# u/ }- I9 `! V! jthe door and he saw the greatest Christmas ' Q0 _* r5 B: x3 Q, T1 e1 N9 C2 S
reunion he could ever imagine.; P) v8 c, S' Z/ `
