! ?* J/ z5 \0 O The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned
s& g* y% f2 ~8 f! D* h1 V* P( yto their first ministry, to reopen a church 6 {1 k. K( Q9 j
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
) {, L8 i3 e, Y. t5 |+ F$ ]excited about their opportunities. When they saw
& p- F: b. V# K2 Y7 btheir church, it was very run down and needed
9 U) ]* m7 B# Q/ W& ~: smuch work. They set a goal to have everything " |* ?9 ^6 I- s6 c
done in time to have their first service , N0 p$ P, {; Y% X$ g; f7 E
on Christmas Eve. : K, O1 X9 A' v4 _
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
- k: @8 _3 o3 F9 m7 m$ ?; ~painting, etc, and on December 18
: a; V( U, {/ U5 A3 [' [$ owere ahead of schedule and just about finished. " {$ u; B' L; W& \
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving ; `3 S: c5 ?7 Z' V
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. - w# m& |6 J4 L/ G7 N
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.0 w4 c/ P6 c$ Y5 {5 \; j. q
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had
+ x s4 A8 J: |2 c+ @- [* ~, tleaked, causing a large area of plaster about
2 n' J$ y! K- B4 j. ~! }20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
) g, c/ V& P* D! W9 ^2 W" nof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, ) ]: V5 n& D6 R
beginning about head high.
4 O0 y$ c/ r) {1 K( |; s* MT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, ; ^$ @. i3 o; I5 F0 b6 [' I2 A* O
and not knowing what else to do but postpone , i5 y! F \+ {
the Christmas Eve service, headed home. : e' f" s1 ]4 O+ r: p
On the way he noticed that a local business was
( p9 b6 j+ `5 x% ihaving a flea market type sale for charity, so he 7 y9 _0 S" G) Q" U) Z" z; s6 U
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
- }% s O. \& G' t7 n" Whandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
8 b: u3 ~* O" _5 \7 vwith exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
7 k, q* C P! }2 m) Z" s) Zembroidered right in the center. It was just - g; z4 o& \$ _) N9 m
% m! p5 A, S# Z# E) X+ J$ Q y$ z; `) {' X- i# ]
$ M* O# V- s3 x( [4 `7 C# J5 V' n
$ D0 P* O9 {# F& n# V8 p( S
" q% d# I4 D5 \) L. A( r
3 |+ @; h F( I0 Q' Fthe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
/ o0 R/ }& X1 E, w0 TB y this time it had started to snow. An older ; f' g: J+ ^. A/ t7 B8 Q
woman running from the opposite direction was
& ]; Z" |1 x$ s% ^: Ntrying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
V3 y& M o% L. C* ]! [invited her to wait in the warm church for
8 x6 u3 z6 ]( Athe next bus 45 minutes later.

! V$ a: `9 D8 `5 a2 TShe sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
6 n1 d! a3 M( ~! [; G8 J# V" mwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put : z9 j/ `2 P8 f' ^# t
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
8 Z7 v7 n7 U8 {; Tcould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. H$ Z& D. h* K' z) q
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
1 \* M5 S+ s+ d4 Taisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"9 l9 P% s+ _3 o/ c5 ]/ A
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
+ D+ a; P/ l7 ~! V% F- VThe pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
/ B# w+ e' u6 \- }) W4 q0 athe lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
& L5 ?. F4 c+ V8 C: eit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had 6 [; S8 n3 \) L, @3 t$ N+ }8 o
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
' c, T# {4 s+ b$ Q8 O) \T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor , P4 i9 |! s( v2 d1 h& A( B
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
5 }0 m5 ]9 j8 ^3 Hwoman explained that before the war she and
# g/ T- h3 x! ther husband were well-to-do people in Austria . " C7 S+ I3 M1 e) p2 o$ p( F
3 Q! c' Y* k p& \2 T
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
7 a7 j5 g) d; x$ G7 fHer husband was going to follow her the next week. : t! ^4 W1 b( n" {! g, @" w! G5 g
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her , `/ U# ~$ e7 i% A( N- J" w
husband or her home again. + I1 w3 Q' ?1 C0 @- w0 I$ F$ I
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
8 T* K- _' `& r4 ~but she made the pastor keep it for the church.1 i! {/ K7 K; f; ^3 p
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That
* l+ M, I8 D- N% y! Q4 hwas the least he could do. She lived on the other
" p: v. m) N3 {side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn & L1 D5 A) G+ Q5 E
for the day for a housecleaning job.! j+ [; v$ U+ J% e/ J3 Q+ _
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
4 K+ V1 q+ q( H' O. h% ZEve. The church was almost full. The music and the 9 u, }( I, x+ m+ S: i+ @ C
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the 8 P/ C0 v1 L! J* e
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
6 h; C* Z1 r4 f* |/ A) q! [and many said that they would return..
- {' z. F- c L7 [( G; T2 gOne older man, whom the pastor recognized
/ O6 t: n2 |; Sfrom the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the - o' Z8 a9 Y- H9 L0 J
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
5 C5 F( Z7 L' K( N* O8 a. _wasn't leaving.
# W! S+ }5 b }2 y9 mThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
; ]9 ]: x/ `# ^the front wall because it was identical to one
7 F( S$ N/ q$ \6 g+ B4 Qthat his wife had made years ago when - }* e8 R: ]0 F2 r# f
they lived in Austria before the war and how
) u% M b0 _8 k- @% P' ]4 Mcould there be two tablecloths so much alike?
, f- L3 Z0 O; R, `! _. E9 qH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
* g+ j- A/ E9 h/ N) ?2 c; i( p# mforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
$ `% F6 t2 K, M! ]6 a1 j9 ~) Bsupposed to follow her, but he was arrested and3 p0 K, V& v: H/ E2 V# k, @
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home
2 Z6 u2 A+ q2 z2 u0 V% w" q' hagain all the 35 years between. ; a1 U3 k/ }. Q; i0 K
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to 7 V" U" f$ o& r3 H
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten . K5 F! G! F4 C3 p' f
Island and to the same house where the pastor / ? P/ v9 s* n1 }8 n5 y
had taken the woman three days earlier. * @. `7 _7 r: h0 m( H. e( b; v
He helped the man climb the three flights of
+ H( y+ @) x$ ^4 A- { |' Estairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
& _$ J. U4 P" d( y+ K! y9 u5 m' }the door and he saw the greatest Christmas * R: B0 S. Y. d- Y/ |5 e
reunion he could ever imagine." H% `8 g* o/ ]: K; `/ ^' v
