The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned 2 x) v" I9 p! r/ o1 k) d2 o
to their first ministry, to reopen a church
2 V, X7 x1 [9 c) d% z( bin suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October 5 ~4 r3 I7 A/ R+ `0 A( b& K% b! L
excited about their opportunities. When they saw + B; C P5 z8 s0 Z8 P9 S( F
their church, it was very run down and needed
' S& J) F; {, H! n/ emuch work. They set a goal to have everything 8 k c0 E5 [8 h: c0 M. k p
done in time to have their first service 6 Z+ [4 v; C- n3 n
on Christmas Eve.
: h" c6 P9 W+ v5 G, p- l/ o4 l9 eT hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
% h. z$ R. D8 Z1 J8 x6 ypainting, etc, and on December 18 2 ?- u8 y4 d' \- T8 y0 c+ x" N3 h( C
were ahead of schedule and just about finished. 3 p( }( N" {, ?& W3 }8 R$ e
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
7 t8 m9 p5 P2 A+ J& q) N$ \/ H0 hrainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. 2 @/ z1 V* }) T# z
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.- Q+ q- m: D4 _# F
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had0 E% l/ k3 G1 ]3 @' G# H
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about
/ S1 l l, {/ C: f, {) J20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall 1 C9 O* t4 a( [
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, - Z" y/ d4 r1 {+ [, @
beginning about head high. ) F0 j! J M6 i" S2 n! B
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, . g! K; x0 U6 z* k! h# l
and not knowing what else to do but postpone
2 I6 w x b) G/ b& [" |5 h2 bthe Christmas Eve service, headed home.
/ `. M; b m# ]$ u% F( ~ p- |On the way he noticed that a local business was
- j* {7 H0 R3 ghaving a flea market type sale for charity, so he
' V" S! j+ p6 t/ N: _stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, 2 f; Q( b7 A. d( F* Y/ @
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
; {% A$ |# l- t7 ~with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
( @9 i; o$ n9 cembroidered right in the center. It was just
( }" v! }2 J$ p# d( }7 B5 `1 p

the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
8 l7 V1 S) ?9 Y5 cB y this time it had started to snow. An older ( D1 o; E0 ]' s# Y+ T' [# a% v/ ]
woman running from the opposite direction was
5 Y% M* q: b1 A8 }6 V! M9 m$ L# Xtrying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
3 W3 ]' H! s( I( ~% u% M! @2 X6 p2 T; ~invited her to wait in the warm church for " s* y) H$ W# ?
the next bus 45 minutes later. , d Z. ^4 w& t( V5 Q' ~! x' v
* [2 ~' r3 `+ \She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
4 d3 i& U. k1 c+ k! p$ `" l2 |" vwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
1 {9 I9 t& ]. v- ?$ z" Iup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor ! w2 ?3 y% D" J1 P
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. & O0 C q0 w8 }( k/ i7 {7 ]
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
9 K) I3 K" ~, A( Iaisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"! m% L. e _& @$ d) y9 i3 _6 H( |
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
2 `; {( e& m y7 q+ |* P( u* [! Z' aThe pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
% |3 N. ]7 t0 {the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
1 k' b- |: A! l6 s4 tit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
* X7 n/ J% H+ g. b( E- ?5 omade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . 1 X3 `2 b/ `3 J
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor $ z- `. Y/ z. B
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
3 v4 |9 }3 X+ t. e2 y- V, lwoman explained that before the war she and ) {; F2 D! _2 n* N2 F; W! j( K
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria .

3 |8 d' p& J2 G H- IWhen the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. # [ O/ O/ O* r7 o9 O; a
Her husband was going to follow her the next week.
. U! ?3 s0 j. FHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her # w% j0 f, @4 d F+ a- P
husband or her home again.
0 W9 @9 d. `. q0 W; ?5 d5 L! p. ^T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;. r/ N' Y1 J' X* P9 C) m1 ]
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.
3 `8 z; H( M, O+ cThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That
+ d! k+ M6 w6 r, Xwas the least he could do. She lived on the other# S u' h- Q( x# E' h
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn 3 w( s: z9 @0 x( a( c$ J9 m5 C
for the day for a housecleaning job.
$ ]+ H5 ~: _2 j; o% x2 A& nW hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas & \1 C) f3 P5 P! K, O" Q/ T
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the 7 d) ^) C& }! }" P
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the
" w, `* S& Y8 }pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door + D2 F. V! P6 \ x& L
and many said that they would return..
# w9 J, N( ?: j6 |# t2 uOne older man, whom the pastor recognized
1 q, A7 } M- J5 b. L+ t; Efrom the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the # v- P4 m3 o! M2 a) _8 {; n
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he 1 r0 y0 o+ A" k4 ?2 ^
wasn't leaving.
6 U( N( B% Q% ]; w) b& L9 T# fThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on . s% R5 M/ H& `
the front wall because it was identical to one $ P0 v& g$ P$ U. V+ M) c: n2 y
that his wife had made years ago when
1 B3 \8 @; P* `+ Y/ M3 ^they lived in Austria before the war and how
F" Z+ p, \3 G& P( f3 Ccould there be two tablecloths so much alike? " L* R6 w9 y4 k: Z' A
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he / C) G0 f8 o8 H: `
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
, ?& p) _' b1 X, }# n% X: fsupposed to follow her, but he was arrested and* ?, y& y; U1 v1 ?, |2 d
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home, X* K7 h0 u6 O5 o$ K
again all the 35 years between.
: e, o& v$ u5 ~& Y8 Y: TT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to : ^+ c, a* P9 X9 c
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten 8 N+ Q6 a3 S6 v3 g" q2 ]
Island and to the same house where the pastor
1 j T6 N. [. A9 v1 ~had taken the woman three days earlier.
/ {2 @. d% p5 dHe helped the man climb the three flights of% L9 ]9 I' G( C3 ^* q# U# E, u
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
9 k3 `) W y' Z4 l1 Dthe door and he saw the greatest Christmas 9 b* C i) W, F/ |: Q
reunion he could ever imagine.

cares we know He will see us through.

difficult at best, just remember I'm here 0 g% |% B7 | e. f( Z; K' P
