The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned
2 X/ H% l" C9 c6 a% Gto their first ministry, to reopen a church
: Q7 D; n3 ^+ P$ B( Ain suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
' `5 l' Y$ w' h! zexcited about their opportunities. When they saw ) w4 ^* O1 o6 H5 L: ]
their church, it was very run down and needed
( ^) a3 l% q6 F p# O* X5 rmuch work. They set a goal to have everything
5 ^( M- L' S3 q6 xdone in time to have their first service : K$ [- p0 ^* I
on Christmas Eve. , M' y. Z* T6 t# F
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
# w5 u& O" e# t9 x ^8 Ppainting, etc, and on December 18
, N$ N( I6 B" [3 b8 t0 |! nwere ahead of schedule and just about finished. 2 u3 D- f3 E b. ]
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving . R* B; k1 ~1 u7 _; H) E0 e
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
k) G$ ?8 @. b7 k O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
2 ^: I; u- t) l" C" Q4 }8 UHis heart sank when he saw that the roof had* c! d$ t5 h4 V- M- h* P
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about
; N9 u; R ?7 C) l20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
! d0 K5 z' {9 ~. P# x& e# Hof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
2 i1 D" D0 q7 Xbeginning about head high.
: O: k/ M" X4 c+ K& ^! g. JT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, # g: T5 D# u7 G" E/ H0 k5 K
and not knowing what else to do but postpone
5 a/ d$ D4 d; Fthe Christmas Eve service, headed home.
% R( y# r# t! h) K1 v4 aOn the way he noticed that a local business was
5 Q0 c" m+ @/ |having a flea market type sale for charity, so he , P. o7 a$ F T( [2 e
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, ! r" ^( a: U) e$ y. p3 i6 b: N
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
# X$ F P( Y+ \* [: L. `with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
& K n" y( G5 C! T7 i2 dembroidered right in the center. It was just
% H( N& b; u/ k
' D! {; s& O9 W7 x4 b) x& x8 @0 M4 x8 ~. ~4 C5 S
7 M' _8 K! Y, a5 @
# U Q& h$ n9 ?6 S7 X' x4 L$ g
8 v% v1 U0 }+ b! v1 l& n8 |
4 O: w" A7 w# ~3 l5 z$ vthe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. P" V) b- v8 N0 C
B y this time it had started to snow. An older / k: k1 V" z& E
woman running from the opposite direction was
) l, a/ V5 j' `+ g* p$ ltrying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor 1 _" z) O5 t7 r0 f/ ^' \
invited her to wait in the warm church for
# h3 M. J$ B+ R1 Cthe next bus 45 minutes later. + v$ ~) ^- a1 G1 S
' O) y ]2 m' i# j" ~& ^) H
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor ( P! ?9 H7 M2 X& ]3 i: [& x
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
* {% ?! O! R: |' B; Cup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
5 p1 d( d% R" e8 Z& e$ ^could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
" E1 u( {+ P7 n; Y4 V0 L; ST hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
# i" {/ {2 z0 M! Maisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,": {% f( ~" v m0 x# h
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" |+ B/ A* F2 }* \. s' e
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check+ }4 W$ U3 a3 k# @1 d8 L8 K3 W
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into. [$ ]7 Z) { y& D ~5 R% O- W h
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had " L* V7 p, N& x: @
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
& Y, V: D& C$ L8 Z' @& ?9 ~T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
8 a- E% p7 e' z) e2 F4 vtold how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
+ o: A% Y" N. ?1 D* S) }woman explained that before the war she and
8 ~( M H T( m: u6 j' [her husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
! }6 Q, h4 q6 E5 O
5 @( f. J. f9 Z: s4 d% z. s* z% ^When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. , {8 T5 g' ^! m; A
Her husband was going to follow her the next week. 4 b, {$ T! X( y- N- h2 L0 j
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her % m3 _9 E1 E& ?4 t1 }' `2 e- o
husband or her home again.
6 y. ^ o; I3 v. AT he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
3 B, I) L* H( p; {& Rbut she made the pastor keep it for the church.( f+ q8 T' b- [3 F
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That
& E5 `1 I7 m+ _5 m2 fwas the least he could do. She lived on the other* f: L0 }6 D5 [4 Q* n3 z
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn : U% y' ~5 t) G9 X# M3 p/ a+ j
for the day for a housecleaning job.. ?6 Z* U3 B/ ]) B4 i3 f2 v: k
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas 2 u& B% @7 H) t3 I- L
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the ; u0 V5 X0 S' \! v& M
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the
: I" h0 k) ]; ?3 M8 a# c% C: ?pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door M6 P3 X* k" @- s6 q
and many said that they would return..
( U) O) R4 C5 T# g5 k3 \# x$ SOne older man, whom the pastor recognized ) d, a* t" t/ \& S' O: R
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the " [* W% v3 O8 g: n
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he ; {$ E" y( t* T( R9 H. U z% Y7 I
wasn't leaving.
# A1 U3 H$ t, v8 xThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on % x* i* F! Z- o; M9 [+ v
the front wall because it was identical to one % S2 v: o' @" w% {/ M
that his wife had made years ago when
, l7 o# C& ~% e( u& N" y, f3 Rthey lived in Austria before the war and how ! Z: h9 d5 O/ d2 ~3 [$ O4 t8 W
could there be two tablecloths so much alike?
7 _' g0 _3 R% fH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he $ c) @3 ^0 a/ i6 x
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was & I9 F+ V! X0 }, z* O/ |3 t
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and- D) s) m: z8 c
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home
/ l# p- ]' B) y9 X$ ?% M" z- M' ^/ \0 Kagain all the 35 years between.
; a, K4 @3 M2 GT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
/ a. ~% _5 i7 c* Z* K0 ?take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten 3 l; E# ~4 h8 a* `* p5 U
Island and to the same house where the pastor
: c, K) ?. X; N1 I0 h* A6 |had taken the woman three days earlier.
) B8 x, d# M1 P) E4 BHe helped the man climb the three flights of% n2 y" a- p, B/ q8 O x
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on" a& A) i# j6 H
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas ' g F" r: q4 m- p! C0 u$ n
reunion he could ever imagine.
