 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned ( r: e5 n! Y0 w& G; s
to their first ministry, to reopen a church # c6 |: ?6 Q, C7 j9 T: A
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October # i' @" j1 K4 n( f& s
excited about their opportunities. When they saw
: M5 g- C* G* \/ ]! Vtheir church, it was very run down and needed
9 W' s4 z5 z v' h1 \) nmuch work. They set a goal to have everything
. }, b- @0 ^' C7 z X0 k8 Gdone in time to have their first service
( E" O) k9 [% p( Xon Christmas Eve. ' k. y- ~6 [. B6 I3 k6 Z9 J& O# w7 g
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,2 c1 q% l: Z7 ^# k# S8 {
painting, etc, and on December 18 9 i. a9 N k: g% j K
were ahead of schedule and just about finished. ! c1 S% X% ^; F: h8 \+ _2 X
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
) e$ M. L. g6 g! I: }# F$ I$ [; Nrainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
9 q! {( c5 i \; T- l+ D2 [( f O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.9 `- O$ \0 [* @- K% }0 @ b
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had+ C7 G2 \6 I- i) T: ^" \
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about + o. z5 |0 F" i. D4 v9 _
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall 6 @( a. Y9 R$ d6 u
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, 8 I# G8 a0 d" B3 g/ p4 ^
beginning about head high.
! }! [9 n& a# [T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
6 D: n% ^7 o. F3 i* gand not knowing what else to do but postpone 4 {7 n3 B& }" q5 b( {: w
the Christmas Eve service, headed home. ! ~, {* ?+ d4 M5 @9 s$ c
On the way he noticed that a local business was . i$ V1 M7 z. Y
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he ( u9 b3 t% u* {. I
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
% {$ P6 o+ T# i# X; xhandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth , Q, O1 ^/ |5 {& r1 o" D
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
- z+ T8 I5 z: a7 R( [% Zembroidered right in the center. It was just
+ _' o# o0 X: L7 {- k! v
9 \. @: a s( V6 K1 U+ J5 [
$ O" p& A9 e3 z% |" p7 k+ Y) D
7 Q" y/ G& w! r0 [
) ^' R6 ]; a- M" m V/ n2 e8 q

- r9 w6 g. V1 z6 v( G( Tthe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
p- j# \& f. A% W8 `B y this time it had started to snow. An older " Q ^) O% a9 T. C J$ j" P7 t
woman running from the opposite direction was + x2 g8 ^8 P5 `9 d& e, ]& C& w/ E. E$ i
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
0 b( r8 M" ?( G, winvited her to wait in the warm church for 7 v) k2 i @# u6 c
the next bus 45 minutes later. 4 l& o5 G# N" W8 v, j
9 |3 @& C$ P( ]; J- A7 x
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
0 E% m9 y) R& @; {while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put 8 M3 x! e: z7 j" m+ \# Q
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
6 e' E3 z% ^) f5 [could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. 0 U9 g' d* ?) J; e3 _+ X
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
: i3 } e. ?& H6 qaisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
; J* ~& _2 m5 ]) {! s0 Xshe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
, J' v$ O9 j% Z- E; GThe pastor explained. The woman asked him to check2 a7 C1 M- j0 e4 o, K$ c
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into. y) Y- i+ W2 `" H2 N. B- s( i
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
( v4 o' _# R; e! S1 X' K, Mmade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . 8 Z1 C6 e9 F1 \ c$ ?& x
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor 3 I4 m" ?0 q* r
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The 8 {% Q0 i' t% c) d- M* \
woman explained that before the war she and
, i2 k! I/ x; v, sher husband were well-to-do people in Austria . # w8 K' e5 I9 T. T9 y
4 w# a+ j; C/ h: g4 r( z" h
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
) ^0 Z, r& ?0 UHer husband was going to follow her the next week.
# a7 G% t9 Z- ^. FHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her : P! R- r6 e5 A/ P- ^7 [9 r
husband or her home again.
- l8 G& c% {6 i* ZT he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
% y0 b1 z: P/ u7 x. fbut she made the pastor keep it for the church.
4 G; z/ |; Q! M, e# E8 Z, {The pastor insisted on driving her home. That2 A" Y/ [" }8 z, n3 P8 A2 C
was the least he could do. She lived on the other
3 t$ S6 ~ C9 tside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn 2 V7 t0 ]* { Q6 h
for the day for a housecleaning job.
; c4 c! x/ b' ]0 w+ AW hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas 2 }4 e- P" y; s, }3 [- C- \
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the 9 ]2 ~# Y5 i. O m1 K( v) X9 T$ [! {
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the
6 j0 l9 y0 \3 ?) Z" npastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
/ z, q' L5 Z, }! ]; `$ ?and many said that they would return.. * Z, W2 }( j7 `; p4 ]- l
One older man, whom the pastor recognized " W- w" }# m3 {3 {, w
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
5 Y! b$ ^) u: e0 U- x4 I4 Hpews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he ' u- w, e# c) v& P) ]3 B
wasn't leaving.
4 m, \( E8 [5 s5 `& N- k, p6 w8 HThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
. W* X9 g) E4 n3 ^the front wall because it was identical to one 1 J2 @+ v% g% N
that his wife had made years ago when : }! Q5 x" }2 |
they lived in Austria before the war and how
: Z- ], v; e* i% }. jcould there be two tablecloths so much alike? 0 j$ `, E, x5 d2 M( T$ {+ a+ K4 y
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he 0 @/ \8 d3 ^" `% ^6 h% N# J
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
! n/ u8 O2 e6 @) [" a }; usupposed to follow her, but he was arrested and; ^" m0 Z1 t% c: P$ }
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home* n5 `7 q; n' T
again all the 35 years between.
% j" u. X5 G: oT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to ' H* H. ~4 O3 g5 c. S# b
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten * I, X1 Q6 ?; [5 \7 a9 @4 `
Island and to the same house where the pastor
0 l( Q' a0 W# K- o& Ghad taken the woman three days earlier.
, @; G' Y; r1 f0 t3 x; ^He helped the man climb the three flights of
$ f B- [. j' L W5 l$ mstairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
' z; B' M6 N1 M* G1 F+ [ a% ythe door and he saw the greatest Christmas
: m6 `7 W' Y4 n& hreunion he could ever imagine.

S o when the road you're traveling seems
; c( f) q# P8 H" b6 z" qdifficult at best, just remember I'm here
