 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned
/ f8 W$ m' E' }: s- C0 oto their first ministry, to reopen a church k9 P9 b# v5 ?' f8 M S& P, [: F
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
% j4 N& Q( E8 ?# t" B4 V, bexcited about their opportunities. When they saw : _9 p+ k* S) U* V
their church, it was very run down and needed 2 x. I: G5 ^6 \6 k( Q5 I
much work. They set a goal to have everything 9 U* F6 c5 ?4 z# x, `" {$ A, ^
done in time to have their first service
& i5 u. b/ {9 W9 }- W/ V- Mon Christmas Eve.
/ p8 H! S3 c. L& [) B2 UT hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
* \. |0 o9 v/ T8 I. K$ X3 Y* l! ypainting, etc, and on December 18 ' k. {1 @6 m' E! K! @" S
were ahead of schedule and just about finished. 8 a0 d( P5 v) n8 b; A6 u# O! u+ ?
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
0 J, l4 H0 ~& E: qrainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
$ ]# r) m0 K) X O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
: P4 Z! p% e. N3 n" X, {His heart sank when he saw that the roof had. t% i6 S- s( s! h0 D- R7 |/ u
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about & n# o, R* E4 C' U' y! K- i1 _. P
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall 9 b; h: N$ P; S) J4 y; L
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, + Q- t# e% a! k4 l4 R# R
beginning about head high.
: h) p& R6 }2 G, L! |0 [ v3 S* fT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, ; B' V1 Z5 E) G, Q
and not knowing what else to do but postpone
" n1 W9 e3 a; N9 s: A9 B5 Othe Christmas Eve service, headed home. : g7 M" Q! ` k5 o
On the way he noticed that a local business was
& d& K0 V: i$ J/ g4 u0 T' qhaving a flea market type sale for charity, so he
! ?' K6 a. _, }( M, f# tstopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, % j/ v$ D; c5 n0 ^+ ?
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth 5 i5 F( E+ j( n& s% ~
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross : j! j. o$ l# D0 e, i
embroidered right in the center. It was just
: r+ I4 V' v3 A# [+ G. D) W " B3 ^6 `3 d6 ^0 l
1 Y$ x$ I# Z1 h0 W0 d) h
$ }: p7 X$ ~' V3 k$ L) g% y+ @. N$ V1 i" b: @( R4 |
0 }3 y9 @+ |6 T5 l
6 ]6 ^) }7 c3 J7 n' Wthe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
/ H: X# ?7 m1 W+ S* UB y this time it had started to snow. An older " ?! r* l' \7 }3 C
woman running from the opposite direction was 0 Z, u3 q1 L' y( o4 {9 G
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
* m# |& i, R* j0 `invited her to wait in the warm church for ! `! ]9 x' w! k+ A7 y" F' A
the next bus 45 minutes later.

2 _0 j8 M3 K3 q) F6 s6 L; q4 x+ [She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
8 I7 i l% z, h, Twhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
: s4 x. }! e8 e5 qup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor 7 u- ]) D; D6 U8 D2 a
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. % T0 C' D; _0 o" D4 \" B% R4 ?& P
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center& j% [( N+ M9 D
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"; b8 k; a' X* H0 H% g. o
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" " \& q$ ?9 I8 [, `
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check" H6 g$ n' r" C4 J; a2 ]( u
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
! V% D2 Z- w( l8 P4 J. ?$ _it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
+ \/ L( E" u4 ]made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . ( V: c6 ^% J$ X
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor & y$ Q* P: E- K* p
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The 7 Y6 \' x. ?1 D) c0 U: D
woman explained that before the war she and 1 ]* `0 f! ^4 Q1 G7 [+ z. [
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria . ; W# |2 A6 w- y5 a& l9 D5 B5 z
& U+ Y b" b+ Z# V
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. 3 v4 {8 @7 l- H# L4 B9 e
Her husband was going to follow her the next week.
, h7 V* G1 I$ q% JHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
: D$ ]$ i; `. A& t/ F7 Vhusband or her home again.
7 }( U B0 r4 h2 d* R( TT he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
) ?4 g! i* w( B( T- o: z* ^but she made the pastor keep it for the church.! x [( A L! g4 V
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That* i7 ^' P$ a7 H' y! s
was the least he could do. She lived on the other
, }+ f# X( J2 J* aside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
- q( i. z; g* u8 P6 ~. } zfor the day for a housecleaning job." m1 t0 V b, y0 n+ T
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
' ~) [* x& w5 \Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the
1 { K* w3 D3 a) Fspirit were great. At the end of the service, the
0 g/ V/ W, j0 Epastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
% w6 n: n9 A$ E3 D# L0 _% }and many said that they would return..
1 }" ^! q+ U1 N, O/ v/ E8 hOne older man, whom the pastor recognized
# {- _* W/ ~1 v1 Vfrom the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the 5 z3 d# ?+ x5 i* W+ P; n$ l e8 r
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he ; c$ V% B2 c0 ~) h* {4 ~4 n
wasn't leaving. - B' o: }8 q, _% z* E
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on & `7 v u8 P% ~" s2 C5 S
the front wall because it was identical to one 6 k8 m' D4 n% q+ ?: Y) v# D, S7 \& H
that his wife had made years ago when
/ A4 B( u2 X. o" F% Sthey lived in Austria before the war and how
1 Z; z0 h6 J; r; C& fcould there be two tablecloths so much alike?
$ I) Z" S. U2 q; rH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he , ]. M" ^: q8 N
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
# ^/ j, X% J6 ~2 |& h7 ^! zsupposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
3 h5 Y" j1 N# m8 J6 V9 Gput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home* J+ {& |9 G5 n" D- u! I, Y; U
again all the 35 years between. ; |( c4 d! r9 Q& Y j2 L' S( Q/ h
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
+ U& Y, X" V; e a6 }take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten 7 L& M5 L) Z; n; A; S
Island and to the same house where the pastor + V5 ]5 V6 E/ a
had taken the woman three days earlier.
# d8 p( _/ l* V7 L2 l- Z% gHe helped the man climb the three flights of
$ V' \9 P7 ~+ B% M" ~. Y! d# tstairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
* A# y g8 |! V |: t# @the door and he saw the greatest Christmas
' U: B* D$ u2 J: k" B& i- w! e# dreunion he could ever imagine.8 q/ }9 G# S( M0 [

S o when the road you're traveling seems y/ `" b* d; ?& `# d1 ^1 J6 y
difficult at best, just remember I'm here . L! H3 Z8 e9 T3 z
