The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned 1 f' ] u& F% A/ g1 E
to their first ministry, to reopen a church
& G8 s! G) _* j4 K, N, kin suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
( F: h3 n4 v {excited about their opportunities. When they saw
+ \3 ^/ _2 {% M( @6 i* o# Ptheir church, it was very run down and needed 0 D# v) V! }2 h" T( _9 {( ]
much work. They set a goal to have everything . T7 ?2 ]# T+ L: v" r. h
done in time to have their first service
& h+ V s4 T0 @/ J4 q3 v/ _; \on Christmas Eve. + f5 v9 D8 \/ u* `) l6 c
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
7 C" @- C6 A/ M( B" Tpainting, etc, and on December 18 6 T( g/ C# @/ ^' q4 e% z
were ahead of schedule and just about finished. . b% r& f8 o- m% D+ B
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving 6 b; {1 S0 {. E( T
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. 3 E/ y2 ~+ H& J+ V- r7 B
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
/ E. V1 e$ t! O6 M* l( {His heart sank when he saw that the roof had/ V- ^, D4 ]( o9 q+ f
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about
6 ?3 J( J* S$ H) Q3 I& L20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
5 o# L/ e: \0 s4 h* Dof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
3 r5 E& o3 L9 P8 O9 X2 W: [( v; jbeginning about head high. 7 i, _: y% I1 ?7 i+ P
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, 9 L! F2 B0 v a
and not knowing what else to do but postpone D: x8 K) O+ ?& p: ~, W0 R
the Christmas Eve service, headed home.
9 k0 Z4 ^8 w7 Z/ g4 Y9 y7 xOn the way he noticed that a local business was [6 L7 L/ o0 A# s9 f
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he
K5 |- j3 _0 hstopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, / z: S1 L0 F+ p& {
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth % {9 w4 x( Z' ~1 G0 Z
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross 2 g V" a1 W0 K. `0 _5 V; S
embroidered right in the center. It was just

5 W4 d$ @' j" O6 j, k# K! I/ u7 O7 K+ ?' f' B' F# t; S) t
! W& S2 T! p3 R u! K
; J4 r; H$ F0 c

$ K& S! V. |/ Y, { Athe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. " r5 o" T+ V* ?$ S& i
B y this time it had started to snow. An older
$ x; { a) |, c# K4 Vwoman running from the opposite direction was
: n$ R/ U1 n8 I: G& d3 [ d0 Ntrying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor C; D& i& C0 j: B4 D: ? s
invited her to wait in the warm church for
+ B2 y8 ]6 c9 [2 ~2 f$ s" V( e1 Mthe next bus 45 minutes later.
& D7 ?9 i" W3 Z$ n) b
0 r& i4 s, q C# q8 g. s7 [; {She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
5 A4 h8 K: i8 h& B- {4 lwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
* M9 o" D/ {) v4 Q z5 uup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
4 r3 [+ v8 Z! [( Q' R- ]. C+ [could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
% U; N! ^3 v% t! [T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center" V, q U; J' K
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"" K, Y% ?& y$ D3 C2 Z/ g+ l t
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" ) P- W* ?+ M6 \: B( t j
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
7 y, K5 t9 g9 o; N7 w7 q6 l7 G+ f% {the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
6 L' D; x. A' P# y+ B3 T8 u z5 Vit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
1 ^: |! b4 L; @1 rmade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . # Y0 @% x/ I. K8 n5 ]# N! R
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
+ G& d" T! d& j) e1 [told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The 2 b* ]: j$ p& |. r4 y
woman explained that before the war she and , C4 V5 k9 n4 ]: U2 t: k) O, l( w% m7 p
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
* F7 O7 y8 C# W5 u9 o2 l' H4 U6 R5 e" D: X6 H% [% _0 }
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
6 X" F2 w+ \4 B3 `9 X5 x+ _; XHer husband was going to follow her the next week.
5 Y7 T3 V H3 ] |& R+ @( k0 jHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her % E$ J" G, i- c$ K) w, q% ^
husband or her home again. 7 t( H, C! E& C4 |8 E# ?: c; o
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;6 A! l7 Z$ m# }8 o
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.
/ ` i7 Z$ t( S7 g1 eThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That
+ e, p) z3 |5 E, w% c) Bwas the least he could do. She lived on the other
+ L f: I7 Y& |0 T3 [ J/ Tside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn 5 S. ?% ~6 |9 I- Y) D1 q
for the day for a housecleaning job.4 v& i8 F$ E J
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
- _. J( o4 z! ?; Q! ?. \: Z; n; ]Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the 9 [) F; a4 Y/ x
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the
2 _- ~! T T1 Fpastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door 8 `) p' \1 [/ [- z. {
and many said that they would return..
$ N. }% N2 {% d; o" WOne older man, whom the pastor recognized
% b1 ]. x. i% b$ o. c1 mfrom the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
9 |* ~4 w. Y8 [- ipews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he . e4 B/ d' }! o2 k
wasn't leaving. 2 u. H2 E) W" R
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on 4 H3 a2 k: c! q6 N$ H" n& E/ ~
the front wall because it was identical to one
# }; v" T# _7 g0 d# l/ P+ ~8 h; gthat his wife had made years ago when * F+ V {8 r, I6 A; }( u) H5 j
they lived in Austria before the war and how
) x2 a- ]8 f. N. O& {could there be two tablecloths so much alike?
0 R7 T) K9 |( k) I/ U# ^+ bH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
" z- g5 L9 n- u# Vforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
/ w# a( `0 O! W7 U8 K" wsupposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
7 Z# M) e- T- c5 w$ C8 L3 Hput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home6 g3 I0 a% h$ n& z$ M$ p9 Z& S0 u
again all the 35 years between.
, t6 W! j R- ?5 P* _T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to x8 O8 A2 x c) G5 q% o7 ~6 @% f
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten & N9 A$ e K" ?* Q- n& M! M7 D
Island and to the same house where the pastor
- W8 _" g6 H0 N5 x) C- O* f* x" Phad taken the woman three days earlier. ' `4 q5 ?4 }' J
He helped the man climb the three flights of
* L5 f. t# S. {6 p% _3 O: r- `stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on6 @, a, j) G! K4 ]. A. r% m
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas ) v* X V$ }) B! }' L. H
reunion he could ever imagine.

promises are true, and when we give Him all our

- A, G4 R$ v3 N$ O4 j6 |+ IS o when the road you're traveling seems
* ~* ^# ]+ Y2 l- u) }( k, gdifficult at best, just remember I'm here 3 d' T6 P% G8 u- }" D* L
