The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned $ f8 C! T7 w( o% I" I5 |
to their first ministry, to reopen a church
8 p; e4 e0 ?; a$ Tin suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
/ {* W. V; U) \5 U' `excited about their opportunities. When they saw 7 g' G9 X/ e# N& D; S) m
their church, it was very run down and needed / e1 P( J+ I# P8 d3 t U
much work. They set a goal to have everything
/ D# k" x( e$ V4 y) K8 Ldone in time to have their first service 0 L2 N+ R8 [; b
on Christmas Eve. % e5 T8 m$ R5 u8 Y* D/ R
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
1 u* Y- B4 y$ X1 N, E" C& Kpainting, etc, and on December 18 4 G; P6 ~/ B+ Q0 L, e/ K& C
were ahead of schedule and just about finished.
# T2 [: g" a" N. c) c) y; qO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
! L0 Z2 Z$ }/ L2 h. U. Q, wrainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
9 S+ H' m- I# L" W9 |' P# H' E O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.: o8 I5 b5 D0 u1 k/ Z6 |) E1 J J5 c
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had
2 |. c3 a9 w7 |; |leaked, causing a large area of plaster about
; [/ \* _* K$ ]& j5 a& R20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
# U) R* n. ~5 s5 z! F5 ]% w. i, dof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
2 S8 i* k7 t1 `) Zbeginning about head high. 1 J6 t& `: C. u8 h( _
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
# B P: c8 `$ c/ n* |& c/ O+ U) ~and not knowing what else to do but postpone
+ A0 x5 i- \; |$ a! O/ G! ithe Christmas Eve service, headed home.
0 B% G; c* H, l; h% ?/ A: I/ Q8 COn the way he noticed that a local business was 2 O. j) H0 H) ^7 M" ^
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he
! }+ @! E6 ^# N4 }4 Zstopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
6 J* K% q& w7 J. R1 ihandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth ) H% d# S$ p: Z$ V5 k% i% e. ^
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross # c) k2 m6 A/ H! c/ r. M2 c
embroidered right in the center. It was just

+ |4 y, r2 R# m" x# Y) @, E# M" x8 p# c5 ?. [# l/ P5 Y6 C5 y% K2 j

* L) h8 W. [' ^, `4 Lthe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
* }; {5 j5 L8 E3 R6 f8 K Q7 `$ eB y this time it had started to snow. An older
1 k$ v p _8 z% uwoman running from the opposite direction was
. `+ }$ I" C% jtrying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor 3 P/ w6 A* U' D
invited her to wait in the warm church for / a' B; ^0 y# q
the next bus 45 minutes later.
+ [. _5 V0 X7 A1 Z3 ?# f
+ T) l- `, u GShe sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
9 I& }2 C) B1 [) M' Vwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
s! y; T8 M2 q# p. xup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor / j: V0 K! x# A* Z. y$ @
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. * \3 e; ?6 v+ a' Q& n% w
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center' r* D& h6 p; [$ M: I3 x3 Y6 p$ m, g8 \
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
1 ?6 @2 H8 I. b, [" p8 yshe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" 4 Z, @6 M. ~5 K" E( y
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
5 o! G6 H- d4 G# k/ X# I0 x9 uthe lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
" A6 q1 y' M6 a! p; Eit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
0 O5 `# T3 r8 e3 F1 c! ^- ]1 Fmade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . " j2 B J. T# N3 T
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor 9 W8 C1 q3 s) F7 r b% \
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The : h. r3 S/ @) q8 S) [
woman explained that before the war she and
7 [3 G; `5 x* r6 f9 d- Nher husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
% ^2 O# H7 w" `' p; O: [+ A" ?4 ^6 T2 p( C+ _. C
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
9 b/ x2 N# r4 z" T, R# mHer husband was going to follow her the next week.
. m2 M3 Y4 k' n3 P+ o+ p9 IHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her 5 C9 B- E2 [+ @' V* u- d
husband or her home again. # e4 M! I1 ]7 ]0 h$ [- ]
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;0 K4 f* P3 h7 J
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.
2 n: o; |) h) Z( LThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That
8 X4 F' s# T% w& k$ a8 i) twas the least he could do. She lived on the other7 O9 j3 z" M/ e9 W: }* A; U
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
# G+ b/ q* L& ~2 S2 b D# hfor the day for a housecleaning job.' G' ?6 K! q, S) ]3 Q% b. v' b1 K
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
- b$ Y: S/ }! B, q/ dEve. The church was almost full. The music and the 4 ]( o/ r7 F7 q* H
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the
5 ~) }* c0 B: x- K$ x& tpastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door 2 O `6 F3 }* \ s8 O, y2 e* k# c
and many said that they would return..

from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the & H0 q- x& n! o d. o
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
; a5 O5 i. U5 [) @' \$ h" awasn't leaving.
$ @& _ z Q: y) \- f3 H, L$ l+ gThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
+ g/ N" s& D3 L; i \the front wall because it was identical to one
( o1 D8 ]* r" T4 }3 a! u& pthat his wife had made years ago when
; H% u6 X! I: ?5 y" I/ l: K Hthey lived in Austria before the war and how
3 o+ W, Z% ?; Z' t) pcould there be two tablecloths so much alike?
; ]( B8 M0 H: O0 n# X) I/ p5 bH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
- x( B5 P9 o. X! \7 e6 }forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was ' s% B A5 n8 _6 Q5 H. p' i P
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
U2 q1 v1 y" e* x* L' Bput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home8 Z2 b( o3 |. l8 M, [
again all the 35 years between. , i1 S) T6 Q. r) L8 X n3 r7 T, t
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
" @) F Q4 o$ Ntake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
1 f9 c8 A( }) T F% gIsland and to the same house where the pastor 0 Q9 F; i0 q, n4 R/ q
had taken the woman three days earlier.
4 Z$ ?5 c( R) YHe helped the man climb the three flights of
) t# C- `; J, ^* `: ^; A% astairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on( }; j2 h7 N% |: H: Y
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas # X% R/ u) P2 I9 b n z5 a$ r$ U
reunion he could ever imagine.6 o# d1 g8 F u" q4 ^' _
