 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

" z5 ~& T1 `$ @ g N7 n# a# t The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned 1 ^/ {" s1 I2 ~5 N! \: i3 z1 j
to their first ministry, to reopen a church 8 N7 v; z! ?. @1 A# p
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
2 ^3 h! Y- J/ Z- y9 U4 v, V$ h8 Eexcited about their opportunities. When they saw
' m2 a$ ] ?/ w$ U9 [5 s! Ztheir church, it was very run down and needed - @6 p7 A% Q5 Z/ i" n" v
much work. They set a goal to have everything , a; r( d' ?+ ^2 c9 q5 F
done in time to have their first service ) f& f m1 ^9 i1 |8 o: o' G' g" [9 ^
on Christmas Eve.
+ N0 w+ j' q. }9 bT hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,3 H% ?. B' m& y3 i8 [5 S
painting, etc, and on December 18 5 K x. j! E* w. d* q6 W
were ahead of schedule and just about finished.
. u" q6 z1 x& `# e) o7 [O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
3 s# B6 M: ?6 o; Erainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
# T A6 S1 b( h9 U9 Y O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
- L0 t, k* k2 x/ ~% W2 E6 S# I$ b8 mHis heart sank when he saw that the roof had/ Z7 {' {* r8 m7 N/ {( M- s
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about
+ |/ {0 Y5 ?2 t0 A20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall " ?9 C# o; C( l) R# Z1 F# F5 ~
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, 1 c6 _2 q! D: o/ r: }- H9 [
beginning about head high.
s3 d* Y: i ~. YT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
$ {- e5 c9 u+ B+ M" yand not knowing what else to do but postpone
" g3 E( V* Q! @* c6 Jthe Christmas Eve service, headed home.
% @0 v6 ~& @! M) COn the way he noticed that a local business was + E& g+ P. ~& R4 p
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he
/ x; n5 P/ U: C' l& n2 D* Istopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
+ Z9 n" J% [' a; p! b, {handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
3 Z+ V6 L, j+ ]* e# Ywith exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
+ p6 b+ ]3 H# Q- Q0 b9 o5 j. sembroidered right in the center. It was just ) w4 h0 U! Q& P' q5 `# N3 k0 o* t1 d
" N/ f, ?8 ]! _ P6 `. n& D( |) r9 s( `1 ]% d0 @

^# w8 F$ h1 h0 ]9 z+ e

the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. 7 o$ `; h& `" a: F' k- R; }" o
B y this time it had started to snow. An older 8 L( a8 ]4 J$ u8 w! _/ I
woman running from the opposite direction was
: q. ?; y# C. m; rtrying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
O; v: p5 d! ginvited her to wait in the warm church for 5 p) E6 R2 Y2 y
the next bus 45 minutes later.
% z& y7 M% C" L7 i1 [& }
0 _( }" ~* j& Y; ]She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor 5 t8 s) S0 Y. x6 F9 }7 W# l, {
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
4 R* i T j- B) Qup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor ) f- @& Q# ^. Y" p3 y, c6 ~& p; u
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. . [1 n5 _* l6 ^8 w+ R
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
' I0 Z/ m6 E+ J6 b$ P8 @aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
* }3 e1 v6 c' c4 N. d% M- ~6 t6 Vshe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" 8 D) v5 z, D' M; p0 l* k( S+ C
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
& Y0 s9 k* F- Z* o6 V$ Tthe lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into. [( B/ J# j2 c
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
8 r1 v0 j2 e3 l. J& fmade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . 8 P3 Y3 R0 I% b+ V
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor ' j3 P2 }% [8 I& n
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The * `% a9 w5 Z7 s0 B' W
woman explained that before the war she and ( |) H8 [* \, j" R+ Z
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria .

, N$ r+ \' w- ~+ h5 xWhen the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
' o" @$ D8 @( t& OHer husband was going to follow her the next week.
% p7 J* E. N4 U. |& c* w$ A6 iHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her ; c& \1 z& e0 \9 I5 H
husband or her home again. & Q$ {8 a) `- O% w6 M
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;9 a9 U9 N: \8 S% n! B! T- u' n
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.
% K( v# A% j* P8 \4 ` yThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That# b( Z7 ^! D) \ E+ h8 l# p! U: x
was the least he could do. She lived on the other
1 `* {9 J, u) M3 ^( Iside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn 5 J* E8 [$ a0 \7 c
for the day for a housecleaning job.
5 x2 `. [# Z. g6 `2 X- TW hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas 0 n" E6 R5 L2 c" H: o Z: m
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the / c" e! p6 z' j8 ^( g0 g
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the ; \. O1 b: q3 [- ?. d0 q
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
! c& G& u# W! \/ J2 N/ ]1 r! qand many said that they would return.. - R) P1 k* Y6 B; G- |2 \
One older man, whom the pastor recognized 5 F: q$ v6 W4 j2 h7 h; g
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the / H ^6 S; R& C; j, r( N
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he

The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
2 A7 h. g6 R& _( Mthe front wall because it was identical to one
4 p1 }# r, w' A l- Kthat his wife had made years ago when
+ U7 v& A! L0 I/ V: Vthey lived in Austria before the war and how
4 U [( c+ ?. r8 I4 pcould there be two tablecloths so much alike?
2 A) \9 @, Z1 z6 t7 Q! KH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
/ ~1 U N) x V/ J7 }forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
+ T9 v8 V8 f8 S# i# A* _! zsupposed to follow her, but he was arrested and W0 v+ q0 i+ F# `( y/ h
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home
+ u) U3 y& L' Z+ C) T6 Ragain all the 35 years between. 6 k% w, J9 `) k# w8 [
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to 8 }* W6 ?" E* t
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
- V3 E$ m9 b9 G, ?( h( SIsland and to the same house where the pastor
( u# t' |( K$ }3 b+ _4 H' v* yhad taken the woman three days earlier. 9 s( c' L2 {, m* y+ t
He helped the man climb the three flights of7 ?1 r6 d& X$ p* P
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on+ O1 X* H1 z( [ k
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas
; `& S! O3 h; C t" j1 J- Nreunion he could ever imagine.

difficult at best, just remember I'm here # ]9 ]( T0 x1 I
