The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned 1 @1 G+ G+ B$ d8 I
to their first ministry, to reopen a church : @: R2 X% H h. c& L
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
8 @" V3 w3 u9 P$ ^' E2 sexcited about their opportunities. When they saw
$ c9 X6 k3 J3 P' ]4 ?, ~their church, it was very run down and needed " g* q! m# U4 m& E. F( H
much work. They set a goal to have everything
8 L$ C( S: t6 u/ {4 Idone in time to have their first service
* }- [- o' o$ u' Aon Christmas Eve. 4 k/ v- ?" D9 ?# t, B; g0 k
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,8 V' ?8 b# M6 U' Q* O
painting, etc, and on December 18
Q0 c) w V* Z8 h5 P0 uwere ahead of schedule and just about finished.
( ]' v# h0 j4 M5 f5 ]; N: S& ZO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving 9 H* ]& ]" `" W! p! C! N- A/ H& V
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. 3 e5 ~1 q5 g' D9 o# ?
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
. H! Y& Z& T- P6 W! A& k3 s& K; bHis heart sank when he saw that the roof had
$ r- a" M4 s. Eleaked, causing a large area of plaster about / N% Q8 D# S! q& ~$ e
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall " t& F& h' h& u7 O' D x4 x
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
1 ^6 P% _& D/ ^0 ?6 abeginning about head high. 4 b3 }3 U, r. u! D* V$ S: q
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, - |3 q7 F6 U/ i' \, G
and not knowing what else to do but postpone
/ s& U. i, K4 ^, }0 y+ @) \the Christmas Eve service, headed home.
$ t" w* n, E/ P$ B3 [0 eOn the way he noticed that a local business was ; J4 s* n$ f. h- {' `
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he - R8 M' z6 U) E
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
" \+ K6 _" `) `4 |handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
; |5 e* D: {, u: L" o; u# Mwith exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross * h4 c: m( b _ N f+ P
embroidered right in the center. It was just 5 [0 z v$ `! i% ^7 q4 c
0 Q2 W$ f/ b" \* C6 x5 c
4 I# P) y5 i Q! ]/ h3 [

+ r* N' O. E7 h

the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
% C, X8 R1 f/ G8 ]( c- [2 X' LB y this time it had started to snow. An older
7 [* j0 V" n1 V( ^. v; Jwoman running from the opposite direction was
+ T: z) G3 @5 j2 _9 r" {( Gtrying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor 0 M3 u$ I ~4 N! f& [2 D
invited her to wait in the warm church for
- _& i% f" t: jthe next bus 45 minutes later. # H* ~2 A! Z8 b
, Y$ D3 U5 [" A# w4 M. f
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor ; W: ?1 Z% N& X% p, D
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put : `7 t7 q/ k5 \4 m& v: Q; k
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
- V2 d+ r% j8 C6 Wcould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
y1 |- v, O& K5 [: |T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
# b% K, P3 p+ m8 }! R! raisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"- _1 d+ e' t; Q/ Y' l" g
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
+ M' o( d9 S# RThe pastor explained. The woman asked him to check% K" h9 I9 W1 P _1 r
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
9 I8 Y+ f7 O" \2 W- t+ }" ]% v. Dit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had 4 w" Y2 v% c: r+ t& T! r/ U! Z* d
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
* ]) b2 \ Q! N" J6 H9 rT he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor 8 V: k6 x, y8 y2 X
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
, n# r. \3 r7 X& f8 b: X6 dwoman explained that before the war she and ( Y' P: I4 W4 G( }
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria . + W! D I$ X) `0 \
7 u. f, O# h( Y' O- V9 f/ h
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
1 A6 y* i0 Q. w! L+ Y5 cHer husband was going to follow her the next week. 2 X5 O) V0 U, k$ n6 I: N! E4 v ~
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her 2 N. M x- y! j' o" L# O$ E
husband or her home again. 7 V" c% k. a: X
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;! P8 ?# P9 L, j
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.3 P2 d) @) d; {/ \! Y
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That
' M7 H! f1 f: S! Cwas the least he could do. She lived on the other
1 W0 g. Q" V. N# S9 N$ r8 \side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
* N6 S$ K5 W, `3 ]) E6 Ofor the day for a housecleaning job.
. X6 }7 o* C$ K. o- u- U8 d7 BW hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
0 l) r. f% I0 m! ZEve. The church was almost full. The music and the 5 k0 t, t$ q) I1 S) U5 e" z
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the $ f( Y2 M$ a2 z J: k) }4 }9 t3 D) v
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
; P a$ u) \; N5 m8 Zand many said that they would return..
; S$ H( N p- KOne older man, whom the pastor recognized # X* x% g u5 j$ u/ ?( L
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
0 L$ e$ s' b2 L+ W' ?4 s0 Gpews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he % M7 O$ E9 B9 p/ R7 K* c2 Q
wasn't leaving.
: R4 v" E( H6 |The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
8 `7 P! N- g( G. z) {0 s2 t6 Vthe front wall because it was identical to one
( S6 O7 _- D2 tthat his wife had made years ago when
\* u5 U# k8 F+ s; \7 m% o$ I \8 Qthey lived in Austria before the war and how & O, g$ N! [5 I+ h" s
could there be two tablecloths so much alike? 7 P% P: @* |: F! H5 b7 L9 F
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he - Q. U) B q( W( |
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
' z8 U. k3 O& a j) n+ Isupposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
5 l7 O4 {0 o1 T/ pput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home
' e9 i0 d6 C' I: y" l! ragain all the 35 years between. ; h( q o% G5 `1 p
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
7 R, I( u7 K7 `- D1 _take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
+ u' {8 v/ P! bIsland and to the same house where the pastor
1 Y3 f- H1 H0 b" y% y8 p5 }had taken the woman three days earlier.
7 q+ k' D1 r- _( K! p+ o) FHe helped the man climb the three flights of3 M2 c6 A) a2 ^- D
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on+ F' j- u, m) j
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas
