" i- Q1 L7 Z7 C! Q The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned
4 E8 z |! B6 Z. _8 J! P0 wto their first ministry, to reopen a church . H$ x/ o/ ~! t
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
; K7 `, d K6 e# `! i$ I) v5 Wexcited about their opportunities. When they saw
5 M# o; C' O# }their church, it was very run down and needed 9 `2 a9 v+ D: P" D$ {
much work. They set a goal to have everything ; w4 G# N' V7 Y9 F- c+ x/ r
done in time to have their first service
4 w1 d1 g+ c6 Q c% D) _* ~7 {on Christmas Eve. 6 k, O I, F. ?/ Z
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
/ y& m" ^2 J( J: y; ?8 lpainting, etc, and on December 18 |4 e/ w! k% f6 R& P( }
were ahead of schedule and just about finished.
" O& Y: }( C5 eO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving / a" S# p8 j9 V( y( [1 u; ?& I' c
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
. I/ ~* x( m) f+ @$ { O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church., { O# `( i+ P% K+ p- g/ N8 F
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had+ W8 Z8 y) D+ B' v2 _9 G. ]. y0 A
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about " V1 ^+ h' P' m4 g; ?: U0 s
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
. a' h4 E% Q* x0 b+ \+ W) z6 U0 Qof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, : ?# E7 D& R9 v6 K. ]! ?
beginning about head high. 3 i6 w- C, J( }
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, ' }5 n+ V2 C' Y2 f! _4 O
and not knowing what else to do but postpone 8 W% @& u( L: N
the Christmas Eve service, headed home.
5 S4 C& C, S4 G2 @3 x: g2 J' VOn the way he noticed that a local business was
, T$ U$ \, z4 e% V# ^* n) `! Thaving a flea market type sale for charity, so he
- p% y1 q0 }. E) a tstopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
2 H. m( Z9 h o" r& \6 `+ yhandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
1 s5 F# i- M4 J" N# w7 M# H5 X: }with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
3 Z/ b7 H! p9 ]& [embroidered right in the center. It was just
/ L- J: |% X2 n ~7 W
% ?& a" L8 e$ L. r' g6 u C7 M" O4 U
, c8 Y) n# l( m H# m) \/ r- V. f! \$ D8 m/ A0 n0 C4 F
$ k) N( V# c- V; E2 [
( S, U h: N3 r; J" N. A+ a
the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. " j4 z2 K* r3 C3 j, E
B y this time it had started to snow. An older - Z0 y% m* b# v/ T% k
woman running from the opposite direction was ; @& j d+ l7 j0 r5 b8 b
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor ) E# V( C" [7 L' Y2 l
invited her to wait in the warm church for
/ a! o# c C. g2 wthe next bus 45 minutes later.
/ Z% R1 C- f: {5 S% _
+ T3 h6 O- {' I* m9 M0 i3 x' G# @: [She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
$ L4 Z% T) K8 H. U/ Wwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put 9 b! ^7 u* s& K% o) b
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
8 |4 f" Y7 p6 O* {4 N# Xcould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. . b* H4 i+ k0 q9 p2 T: k
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center7 T0 ^4 k9 @9 ]6 c0 X
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"9 N: j, D! V; C( y
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
2 Y# N& c6 h# SThe pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
3 q( m( H( B9 `4 X+ A" @the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
: J( T. M4 V6 h+ n: C m7 b4 G9 G3 Bit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
' d1 m/ v/ l ]$ s6 e0 m8 v3 fmade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
( y0 B% X/ W; z/ [, y# U& oT he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
' o+ ^- t; I( ~2 f% R- q; M# ]told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The & s$ y) q, E: S7 q) I4 B
woman explained that before the war she and
) E& f/ e& R! zher husband were well-to-do people in Austria . ( I# }: y& ^4 R) p$ ~2 t
% ]+ f5 J+ t. m" mWhen the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. $ R6 b- J' h4 H. @/ o7 }
Her husband was going to follow her the next week.
4 ]9 c3 S& Y% [1 t* {" Z: YHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
! ?2 V* H& @" M- `* Q. O* N1 u& shusband or her home again.
4 y O* H1 z4 r+ oT he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
5 B6 f4 W+ P3 U5 N+ z7 L1 Dbut she made the pastor keep it for the church.
1 C* k! a! v2 [3 E5 F% SThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That
6 w* W, A, H/ e- A! i- R- a/ i0 ywas the least he could do. She lived on the other
2 C g7 _( A! D0 u! u0 l0 U1 yside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
4 O( H% j( j% zfor the day for a housecleaning job.. F, U8 D. L( k$ S) o. r
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas " a5 [* q" ~* e4 d3 ~* L9 r
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the
7 V$ i2 @/ U- n. c1 _' A7 k9 mspirit were great. At the end of the service, the
4 M0 s5 Y- p" ]# S, y8 dpastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
8 R) L) T) _5 L/ {" M% o% Cand many said that they would return.. ; J/ ?( u8 i' C
One older man, whom the pastor recognized
; [# M5 N, }* W7 ]3 S4 S& e- Wfrom the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the 9 t. j- W4 ~8 E1 {
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he ) L+ l9 Q q* B/ v) P1 f) V8 C9 f. u
wasn't leaving.
" x s; l4 l/ ~7 c, eThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
& o) ~3 _8 T* H4 @1 O9 |) W* |the front wall because it was identical to one
' B5 f9 G2 M+ Ethat his wife had made years ago when 9 Y5 B5 @% w7 [3 U7 J4 j+ s0 x
they lived in Austria before the war and how ' R/ I3 E3 h- n, l
could there be two tablecloths so much alike? 0 I/ l+ R9 c7 S3 Q8 V, h' K
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
0 J, ^' Z8 ]. C; r+ a8 lforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
# w7 F7 m* `; C; g$ i3 X8 b5 tsupposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
8 v, s3 n% I, t+ S4 n( E Eput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home6 e" F" k/ i7 T# L9 h' }) _
again all the 35 years between. 4 B6 u# Q D$ M# ~0 U
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to + h6 N# `3 n: a6 k, W+ ~
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten % Y5 r" d; q; v( O( @+ }
Island and to the same house where the pastor
, h; f; I0 d/ x; v& Q1 `- dhad taken the woman three days earlier. % ]8 c" R5 x; l7 u+ V8 E
He helped the man climb the three flights of
5 p! m* l$ O" w% Tstairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on, g% c" U2 W0 _ ]- I: U, N$ |1 q
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas 2 R# m& S% H# e* m2 K* G( ]
reunion he could ever imagine.) Z; }' k8 T" |4 n* }
