 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason( |# |) [5 n! k( L- Q: j& s) x

The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned ( t$ w0 c4 j1 N N1 e( d1 i
to their first ministry, to reopen a church % a4 B5 T1 s1 X' O2 n
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October " i7 |! g6 C5 D) J6 i9 `6 P+ a
excited about their opportunities. When they saw # R* m- a& Z/ v! T# b6 _0 K& h
their church, it was very run down and needed
* o) q$ s* K* |much work. They set a goal to have everything 2 Z4 G5 o" J! L
done in time to have their first service * B( L# d# D. y7 p! C: D: ?
on Christmas Eve.
5 A1 h0 D1 Z- K! |: ST hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,& T+ F( K- B) f9 i4 u3 Q
painting, etc, and on December 18
+ B$ N+ b6 P. V& j$ }were ahead of schedule and just about finished.
0 B% P+ @2 n' p& J/ J! C( O+ XO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
' x' S. @3 z; L7 }rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. - T8 v4 X$ O. K1 [. x3 z0 i* I
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
7 |: l# O" w# `7 e" h- ?( b" XHis heart sank when he saw that the roof had* C$ f$ u/ x' x& ~' P; B
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about
; d; z9 `: J; }9 Z6 F20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall . P: M- s6 [; Q; J
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
% {/ |/ x; u; rbeginning about head high.
* p; X9 Z: |$ S/ V" k3 e1 Y2 ?T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
; g2 J# a) V* Mand not knowing what else to do but postpone
3 e1 [% U- ?2 H& Gthe Christmas Eve service, headed home. " Y' E0 k+ N8 k( K+ Y3 }
On the way he noticed that a local business was
* g5 `/ h8 Z6 M9 X. H$ chaving a flea market type sale for charity, so he I7 A$ G; Y5 a3 ^2 _, F
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, ! c0 _% z8 q7 s1 ]# b8 y
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth ( }! r* J0 g D
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross 1 m7 P3 S# G! Z8 r( d
embroidered right in the center. It was just # d/ v. j% J. P
# O P5 O* c: l9 ?1 t7 v/ k. w' \, q! m |* M
3 Z- k% ?6 l2 y, L! C$ k2 q3 `
' ]6 i3 Q9 U4 {8 w9 Z - v: P& @, f" [# w2 j) e
8 H% \7 D ]2 D/ B! e6 D- Q
the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. 1 f/ P, O u' x* U
B y this time it had started to snow. An older
# D$ {3 y- v E3 f; wwoman running from the opposite direction was - [1 c+ r5 J& ?/ |( b/ u. ~& p
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor ! i2 x* k, ]' C1 d( B
invited her to wait in the warm church for ! j8 f! A$ I* Z- p j) |3 x$ }
the next bus 45 minutes later.
; r. M0 y+ g2 w8 T" n* ]5 x% }% W9 I% W. i% w
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
6 W! k: j* z( r) r6 T- fwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
. w( I5 |& f5 T( uup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor $ f* k$ R0 W5 _6 D; ^& ^
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
I. \: Z) a# h! C/ f. c- @& d {T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center0 ^& n L% N/ e7 y
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,", s1 U7 h+ e) y4 X9 W3 m" s
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" ) L U+ y7 M$ m* u, I
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check. k- ^3 f% k* f5 R3 s! v$ J* ?
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into# C g# Z" P6 x6 Z! | i, w& S
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had 2 ~- V8 X+ J/ X' L6 T- y/ H- n/ G
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
7 c" e, f; a4 b5 T jT he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
; l5 r, W% ~$ ^told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The 7 I5 H% S0 I8 O% f6 ^
woman explained that before the war she and * e* _2 t) _( P5 z- ~0 x
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria .

4 D8 W Q' c+ g6 BWhen the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. ! M# }: b1 V3 v6 L5 K! _
Her husband was going to follow her the next week. 0 Q8 r9 Y* M. A# ?, [6 L
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her % U+ K" [) W/ A9 B f
husband or her home again.
4 Z& z- H. z" d# X# L$ uT he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
9 N6 r9 z$ `$ Q9 C4 Mbut she made the pastor keep it for the church.
' u, A" p( @4 N4 r3 JThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That
) z4 ?+ x4 E2 `8 n. r* }was the least he could do. She lived on the other
* a& k- ?% `. ~: [0 [" ?8 i' I- Wside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
' c7 a/ `% d+ F) E h2 Zfor the day for a housecleaning job.0 O; y$ {$ V& y; d
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
1 z) v9 z" ~, kEve. The church was almost full. The music and the . a& d6 K" Q9 U, p" [4 h
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the , C, M5 x1 f2 G
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
( p: k+ Y; h4 V* h& u1 qand many said that they would return.. 4 p8 R3 l- j( b+ R0 p
One older man, whom the pastor recognized
! {, _" M" A# P, d/ Dfrom the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the & K+ f# I0 R1 |
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
' j' W4 B, n- K2 Rwasn't leaving. 6 h! d$ [! w& F8 d9 |7 F/ M
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
3 {* F; P) w p. gthe front wall because it was identical to one 5 u& K! r* Q/ D- m& @
that his wife had made years ago when
6 w3 H7 u! P, s0 ^they lived in Austria before the war and how
3 [6 {! h8 S" X! o) k) mcould there be two tablecloths so much alike? 5 ~7 K6 I$ C1 o! z7 ?% V5 R
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he 0 W; k6 E7 T& T. o
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was " K S% Q# |9 x4 B
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
3 [ Z. C X A, e$ @8 |6 P3 P/ E" d& Kput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home1 G. ~& c+ A! y: U
again all the 35 years between.
2 M0 g6 J. |; P, oT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
F, ~0 c3 Q6 P/ ^ |( ?take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten 4 p) t+ p4 B+ m8 ?' e* r6 u
Island and to the same house where the pastor
! N) Z( @7 q! mhad taken the woman three days earlier.
- _$ i* l' t& G, dHe helped the man climb the three flights of
/ I# r% l9 U& y# D% Z Lstairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on9 r: f/ W9 z/ W0 c# V g
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas ~1 _# A+ k I( t6 f- Z% a( z
reunion he could ever imagine.

cares we know He will see us through.

+ U s V) [7 U3 L+ Tdifficult at best, just remember I'm here
