to their first ministry, to reopen a church . q R$ u" R. T; B; u8 p9 p
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
2 S$ j Q) R2 [! i ~) Lexcited about their opportunities. When they saw
% b" M8 f a. A3 R5 Otheir church, it was very run down and needed
! D. R0 E# v, [# d/ umuch work. They set a goal to have everything
& \4 C, E$ A0 B7 U6 Ydone in time to have their first service
. d( g* g+ N: l' A- _# @on Christmas Eve.
& g( k# \6 w* O2 rT hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,7 A& x- c) [( @7 P" v- w* P$ ~
painting, etc, and on December 18
9 B( q5 \2 }: F7 Z6 \ N2 Xwere ahead of schedule and just about finished. $ F! o5 J L, k4 w4 B$ w2 r8 d3 `' H# e
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
1 I. z( i8 b9 K6 prainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
6 e6 s; x2 ~6 `7 V6 k6 ? O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
+ P8 a- m- Q& s& O/ NHis heart sank when he saw that the roof had3 [! F7 v& y# t. f" [, r
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about
3 ?) L. Z3 V2 [) b" e, H1 v$ p20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
J: c1 Q9 l) b; ^( E0 b& U6 gof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, 4 i4 j9 y, _. X5 c7 q; d, N
beginning about head high. _# Q, _: v4 d/ l( W* j
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, 2 f% H: P) B. x# L" `: O
and not knowing what else to do but postpone 2 W7 ~; L: ~% d
the Christmas Eve service, headed home. * A0 F( I$ S5 ^6 g
On the way he noticed that a local business was ' x! k1 p4 _8 ]" |7 J0 C
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he + w7 F- M4 h. x7 a) ~' b
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, 3 u- r; y' U) B4 Q" l. t; a* A& ]
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
/ ^& N t$ a! g5 g& N4 Pwith exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
: d4 T' r0 \- \embroidered right in the center. It was just - T6 [7 j0 M, }
/ F0 P% v! V3 \4 |% _7 [& P4 k; d0 A3 k! n/ g% h9 b3 q
% Q d1 A+ d8 g2 D, D2 b3 y
" Z+ p" p, Q" ~
' u; R. Y- P! |4 H2 L" v
. M" y* ?. V" rthe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. : Q2 b. A B) s* h- Z. F0 Z, j
B y this time it had started to snow. An older
" q2 H& j' m; m B2 \woman running from the opposite direction was
0 L e/ L3 `+ `$ Y; ^, D3 }trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor 7 w9 T# n A! ]0 s
invited her to wait in the warm church for 7 x0 E6 w. k( h" M: ?' h
the next bus 45 minutes later.
. _" a- i& r7 t1 J! \0 `$ Q/ i. e8 k: ^0 O
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
9 l: k% |7 c# H: h: b2 ^while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put ! M u) x/ ^! z% y% Z) G% F
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor 1 ?( n4 c- J. t* a6 A8 T/ r4 r) T* D
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
& Q# N' M; x" w4 V BT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
: i5 t& N" q7 B) h xaisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
6 P7 I2 e' m# Z7 j2 W: dshe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
3 h: a. T* K3 R' ?5 |! M8 {The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
5 W4 @/ b7 ?* Y7 b, R" y: C5 Ethe lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into- I: Z r) S" o( E; t% e' f
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
8 L0 W( E+ O5 m) y J! D, X& zmade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
' P( V5 u5 k" wT he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor 7 B3 W- @* m5 f- j- L% @, l& n( K
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The _2 `/ J% c* _+ D9 H8 U
woman explained that before the war she and ( Q5 z; i" E0 R5 g$ W: k. n+ q# L
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria .

' c, U: J+ F8 p, P* N& }. bWhen the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. # Y6 ]$ R* T+ P! i
Her husband was going to follow her the next week.
. M3 `6 ?& T8 G/ v- g: ]He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
2 I. Q6 K- G5 {husband or her home again. 6 v/ Q- ~- q" d8 g
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
6 k, Z! N# t; W7 x$ Abut she made the pastor keep it for the church.) Y8 D+ @. M3 \3 s' s' s1 s3 V
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That3 T5 s' {9 S' m6 \
was the least he could do. She lived on the other- \( n. \0 O# w' M% l
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn - ? H3 Y) `( v9 q4 ~8 W4 q8 [
for the day for a housecleaning job. e p" I6 y5 E9 ?
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
3 C; B( h* b& c( e, c J0 S; S" PEve. The church was almost full. The music and the : V+ a3 D2 R8 s* K/ ~
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the 7 ]5 ~& G0 q0 V9 I0 }! S) r2 Y
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door ) Q$ S. }, d5 V! @6 ?; R' h K
and many said that they would return.. 3 `, w. r/ ~; D% A; ^, ~
One older man, whom the pastor recognized 6 l! w) i+ U- T3 O2 a+ w6 {1 v4 _$ q6 C5 I
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the # m7 `* R$ E. X) \' q" a
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
0 S. @( @! i; G. ywasn't leaving. 5 x9 Q4 B0 k s/ x
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
3 G J+ x/ g! gthe front wall because it was identical to one
$ `* v7 Z% _1 j# Kthat his wife had made years ago when
+ S% F9 L; @5 k# Z6 s' Q! P- Pthey lived in Austria before the war and how 0 F$ r% |/ W$ K8 d/ K4 u0 N
could there be two tablecloths so much alike?
) o$ s$ k3 h! q) [1 T+ Q8 PH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he 3 B2 i' y7 T2 @3 _* z( R; l+ F
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
; { Z% {# \# |9 ~ d( P; y+ d# ]supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
3 C5 g' C: K g2 S# `, ~ ~put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home7 q: Q# f& {" Q2 h
again all the 35 years between.
: R3 Z5 |* k4 Z: `( wT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
8 r% @ L2 E; X2 i7 g* ]take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten ' {0 h& F+ n. v2 W# i0 h8 ^
Island and to the same house where the pastor
c$ T/ A6 D& ]3 Q0 Uhad taken the woman three days earlier. + @, d2 I' E1 ]$ `2 I! _
He helped the man climb the three flights of
# U9 G/ L% y/ `2 F7 f7 Vstairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
. B' o" [4 F; |% Rthe door and he saw the greatest Christmas
1 `+ O- z; j/ [' g% g9 I( greunion he could ever imagine.
