 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned
" \* R8 B) F, S# L. \to their first ministry, to reopen a church 7 B7 W- N2 s" ^9 J* o2 |7 ?5 x
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October 0 g8 J! E) K! B
excited about their opportunities. When they saw 6 h& x. o7 ], F
their church, it was very run down and needed
% i* z( K4 s1 U$ J, ~) L5 M' ?7 Ymuch work. They set a goal to have everything ( t9 v6 {) B+ |. _. h
done in time to have their first service $ L/ M/ S! |2 f" U4 A5 ^% [! M" g. ~
on Christmas Eve.
5 {3 I7 w# ?! M' t. W& ~T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
* ]5 t. x$ E, u( Xpainting, etc, and on December 18 ( j. n4 g# P0 m: V6 ?! _
were ahead of schedule and just about finished.
* w" p: r$ }+ N! a; v. RO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
9 ~' E, m4 c, c" lrainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
7 D* L" O: D6 J# p. |( |" p8 J O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.5 X! n0 @# O! v: F
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had2 L V: g# J: c" V; H, [
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about 1 I5 o, F9 |5 z' k( C
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
; X6 L5 S+ f" z6 x! E" gof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
/ S( p/ U) l: _) Mbeginning about head high. $ B+ o+ @* @! V. p
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
2 ]. g1 r3 r: ^& V+ w/ _and not knowing what else to do but postpone
. ~1 K) ~$ s8 k' b% `the Christmas Eve service, headed home. ' x, |; c0 r6 ^! `5 ?6 z1 x, Q
On the way he noticed that a local business was
/ V. F* I6 E% l4 M1 z$ {9 zhaving a flea market type sale for charity, so he
7 T0 O5 |, T* l6 M9 cstopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
. h' t* ~$ i7 P1 b4 r Nhandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth / K4 m- b1 ?; ^' W8 F: B) x+ ]
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
i- I" X& u( F" [1 w3 b6 rembroidered right in the center. It was just # `' S* D1 x' x% n& m( k5 V
" B. M* M+ c& G7 |! E# ?6 A+ q& x3 [3 b, L% ?5 V
( Z3 l8 P- [2 B) Y+ t) O [7 i
6 g# D' n* S0 Q4 i / Y4 B' [+ C3 K) j) I, e
* Q2 g6 S( G! H: ] z8 X8 J2 p7 h( g& _
the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
$ o* h2 b; W( O( p4 G1 mB y this time it had started to snow. An older 8 y* o8 d! H# X1 Q* ^
woman running from the opposite direction was
, q9 v7 D: `5 |8 Y" T# ~7 I% rtrying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor # V8 E% T3 s. y, }: t
invited her to wait in the warm church for 0 d m& P5 k: b6 g
the next bus 45 minutes later. 6 R5 F1 Q7 F/ A# a- ~
: n" e$ V, g1 X( l6 l! @ J4 \* G
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor 9 M: l, j9 h0 B+ t) o" e C G8 ]
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put 8 R: z; R8 V* B( z" T
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor 3 _1 O; R" E4 |- @# U" x. |+ |
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. ) a4 z! e7 N6 S
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center `* ?3 K$ t$ M) C- m) S
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"5 M9 B) D. E$ e6 d3 [; |
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
: F, \2 B4 J' O; r; S- ~The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check5 f, M5 a+ ^6 ~" x# W
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into; m1 A: E; i( y7 H0 z% _4 M; d
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
m2 _: s W d& Nmade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
# P: e$ n2 W# L5 B, @( L* rT he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor 8 ?. M+ S- }, r0 V! R. u
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
2 D3 M' d& F* ?( ]woman explained that before the war she and
" a7 e6 y( E! R. W. Jher husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
# }2 e. g4 u6 z3 }3 j% q1 @. Q( G. u0 T- P) H! [/ J: K' T' \
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. 5 |9 K6 ^1 p* z3 y- X
Her husband was going to follow her the next week. 3 p" L' Y' V- ~) P7 `* L$ S
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her / `: V2 }6 l l" \ i# }) r, _) H
husband or her home again.
6 w l4 f! \9 O3 M& X- u# WT he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
4 A. ^) }' @% _: O# Z9 K, m! O% o. _but she made the pastor keep it for the church.: w2 ^# d. ?3 ~. D8 {7 N
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That
, Q5 a4 O; z% L: M, W- p: swas the least he could do. She lived on the other
; t* e: y; F/ o9 oside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn - f/ z& V5 e$ ^9 o) K
for the day for a housecleaning job.. V6 D& G& Q9 O8 x, y
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
" Y' Z4 G/ z$ N8 CEve. The church was almost full. The music and the
- T8 ~' {1 G5 V6 h( z& U" Dspirit were great. At the end of the service, the ) ~! B# H$ t% E9 c5 T
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
. p; [0 C1 }( Uand many said that they would return..
/ t4 _+ g8 Q4 N9 Q: x/ x3 y3 {One older man, whom the pastor recognized " p' R% p/ r; C- }% q$ d( O
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
8 m( d2 L" }3 Y. I8 Mpews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he 5 S, [3 C* y+ D, V, j; `1 \
wasn't leaving. ' k \ N/ c8 s$ f. Y
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on 7 [% o# G2 _6 _5 M
the front wall because it was identical to one 1 e. G9 L! a: l5 S. F3 t1 A2 r9 h
that his wife had made years ago when / E. n# Y- X. ^5 u" Q6 u
they lived in Austria before the war and how
5 e$ Q( K8 j/ V, j$ rcould there be two tablecloths so much alike? * o3 x2 _4 ~' J( F9 L: Q" _
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
( R) h1 v6 T2 A# l5 H! Oforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was 1 w% ]& s5 M5 Z" a1 C
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
$ |& o0 V2 l2 B' W6 `8 ^1 s! Tput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home
9 p1 y; H/ ]3 o5 z2 oagain all the 35 years between. $ l$ r7 S, D/ V4 |% P3 c
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
. T9 H4 d6 S+ Ftake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten V) B6 H7 d8 S3 W3 k
Island and to the same house where the pastor + u) h. X* E6 L9 ]) @
had taken the woman three days earlier.
. G* B) ~; `) [# _! OHe helped the man climb the three flights of
( B% R8 q4 X z5 q/ g. m& u3 Cstairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on; U) z8 k( D+ p
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas
9 m! P2 X& g, ]6 A% Breunion he could ever imagine.5 x- C( Y: Q; Q; t9 P) z) o
