 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

' R4 s2 R. T/ _; b) _* @to their first ministry, to reopen a church ' S7 |; B$ b+ \: Q" A" P J
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October & C8 _. c4 e/ i9 V: N
excited about their opportunities. When they saw & H( e+ C8 z: E- i% ]) {
their church, it was very run down and needed
0 V7 b4 T, F0 _) X8 t+ ^much work. They set a goal to have everything / S$ c" k1 I' O
done in time to have their first service ) N s' H" Y2 ^ Q2 x3 r& x
on Christmas Eve.
1 e" d" E9 g3 N8 Y& cT hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
; l5 ?! ?/ m- N9 h7 {painting, etc, and on December 18
) J. e0 H: v1 |6 W! Zwere ahead of schedule and just about finished. 4 x I, v0 v+ @ [' o% P4 v) x
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving / j1 g& o X( e/ d$ c! H1 k0 t
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. % O% ]$ Z1 y7 g2 |
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.4 T3 _0 }5 n! m6 F& L$ E1 ~) _
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had. @0 c B( ~+ P( o( z6 ?
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about ; G" p8 m! d9 S E# O
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
) x% V9 G/ x# @* ^# V3 Vof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
) q5 i( _9 O/ z+ i8 Abeginning about head high.
`0 S4 g* w b5 I) v7 O& m- CT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
6 |1 b9 T) ]- R% R4 Cand not knowing what else to do but postpone
6 d; V2 Q' a9 o* ]2 rthe Christmas Eve service, headed home.
5 ]/ i) l8 W4 X8 q. _On the way he noticed that a local business was * [" I' O- t, O* x% E5 _7 ^0 H0 w
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he
7 k# q. {$ x( l4 Zstopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, 4 \. w# |2 m: J" ]' g
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
* x7 H6 t3 X7 j. X2 {, B! d$ Pwith exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
) p6 Q7 v1 V( G# u5 V2 `. Kembroidered right in the center. It was just
+ Q# v4 @$ b4 h. w% `2 n
1 k/ d8 f- I7 h. c! \1 q* u
2 g! ?" r: F' @1 X: K# L8 l7 t 4 o: t' t, T) \) _0 [: D; j
' g4 C1 W [, S9 g
( l0 r! p; J+ _5 H; m2 C# G5 W+ ^4 j
the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. & q) i6 _: y% Y; Y" h @
B y this time it had started to snow. An older
' V& `0 a4 t- B# S2 e' ~2 k$ Mwoman running from the opposite direction was
" K) T- u5 ?* w2 f! gtrying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
0 n8 ^$ w3 |- |invited her to wait in the warm church for
3 u. L2 ?4 j1 l4 S9 L$ Jthe next bus 45 minutes later. 9 }) m+ X' X0 E# k
& `* q f h6 \" ~( ^4 L2 z7 yShe sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
- k# L0 U. w9 M- @while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
+ i( L9 T0 t* n5 A5 d. ]up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
' v4 X' C( Q$ p9 n4 c' U. ^ {could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
# A! Z) o- Y3 w; LT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
N% m( K9 E! ^) Laisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"7 U2 P; Z4 I* p) z5 {
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" : S4 X, l' ~. {- X( J* Z
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check" V% v7 i* J. `
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
1 j; t2 O7 h% c, V5 z3 fit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
- F6 Q8 D' Z# i4 bmade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
& K; _( t+ K/ }' W7 r. d: ]4 Y# qT he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor 7 q% [+ Y* Q7 J" a+ r5 b1 p
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
" [1 t# ]& \5 j& ywoman explained that before the war she and + |+ {+ ^3 N% B$ ]/ H$ K
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria . ) m( V, X! }" a# {" S
, A" M$ R8 I/ e+ ?6 u
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
0 T1 i0 K8 C, [$ DHer husband was going to follow her the next week.
+ i8 y: ?- l YHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
; v, X. X3 Y9 R4 S1 y9 Z! dhusband or her home again.
. b9 z, p$ X# {" O; v2 S1 ]T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;4 f% M; y) C. |3 @" w4 v
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.5 J* B4 M" ?5 }* L
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That
8 _; ^+ N0 Y4 E# Y2 c5 J' p2 wwas the least he could do. She lived on the other4 o3 B2 y: q: O9 B) s" n# y
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn : ?6 O2 A2 x% ^0 k( d9 r
for the day for a housecleaning job.1 I) T, x( h' ?6 z! m
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
$ Z+ u, I5 p( b& HEve. The church was almost full. The music and the 5 w k1 C* J5 D4 T
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the
9 k( s) ^( @) U' B% qpastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
n6 i' y2 c4 N. |! K4 L( cand many said that they would return.. 4 O6 T% X' f( N" S- a
One older man, whom the pastor recognized
3 }: W- `. J3 t8 @from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
3 V" b7 s" k! H$ E3 |0 f/ zpews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he 5 ?. D/ ]5 r4 ^ P3 I' ?' y* V: ^ g
wasn't leaving. 5 |$ Z& y2 i( O4 j6 Y& G. n( Q
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
% B, [- S5 X& E/ @- p1 x: Athe front wall because it was identical to one
0 I9 ]8 B$ j9 q. ]# B8 z' ~" zthat his wife had made years ago when
6 C7 x4 k) u; _they lived in Austria before the war and how 4 Q4 ?2 ]1 A5 t& u& S% k; ?' T
could there be two tablecloths so much alike? ' N$ p# {. S3 w# {1 }
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
( X4 a. k t/ sforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was : B+ H! s) W( N
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
5 u& z; E. d( q8 L7 t* y/ hput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home
; ?; H1 @* C( ~/ Gagain all the 35 years between.
0 o: I" ~, I, z/ _* _8 g) bT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
6 _0 I# t$ c8 o9 |4 Z! ctake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten ! ~. B! h; V3 m8 u1 Y+ ~! s
Island and to the same house where the pastor
- P5 q c4 i. c0 }had taken the woman three days earlier. 7 T1 T- g( i8 J6 ?
He helped the man climb the three flights of$ P- i" g u3 d- O4 G$ U
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on6 a$ R! s! P2 o
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas 8 m! ]* ~& |+ x
reunion he could ever imagine.7 Q0 l& [ U {: G
