5 r' [8 Z+ \* | The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned
9 [9 ~* ~! |! ?! h! j6 Tto their first ministry, to reopen a church
( [$ J. L( J) P! a; X/ M- uin suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
' v# Q6 {- |4 X4 {excited about their opportunities. When they saw 8 L q, r3 ?! F! t, P
their church, it was very run down and needed 2 \; }' n- A; \% g0 o, u9 K6 U
much work. They set a goal to have everything
! H, z$ ]& u; N" idone in time to have their first service # p" V2 ?5 I4 Z* ]6 J4 Y" k- ^
on Christmas Eve.
- D% Y3 w6 g; h4 K( |T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
/ i0 ^' U e% w: A* L* O4 V6 o% Fpainting, etc, and on December 18
7 u4 ~ M7 T1 nwere ahead of schedule and just about finished.
% x( V% [) X) u4 n7 xO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
6 {+ ]: R+ J9 s2 Qrainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. 0 b3 V' I6 G# F. f! F0 `! f& z- a( q' e
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
" ?$ P# Z% o" Q0 Z# LHis heart sank when he saw that the roof had
; t( }$ M; \0 ^5 {$ ?* }leaked, causing a large area of plaster about + ?/ G. C2 ]: h& L! N j) D$ m
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall 5 S1 q O& B, Q% L
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, 3 ]6 `3 f/ ?7 N9 T4 y' z2 o1 n# {
beginning about head high.
4 z7 y' X. q5 b" x6 dT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, ) U2 ~$ O& ~- v
and not knowing what else to do but postpone * ?) [4 J6 ^5 V( s/ L
the Christmas Eve service, headed home. " b) o: c0 X9 \# }: _" W) T z
On the way he noticed that a local business was 2 s& K9 |0 O3 Q
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he
8 B. M4 t$ L2 ^& cstopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
/ C; P2 u7 l; m" {' N5 U% i1 Ihandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
1 E& q, V) p% o' Q3 t2 w1 {with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
+ L$ p' k$ i# P, |- |2 Xembroidered right in the center. It was just 5 M( b. Q0 c+ ]4 s- F e4 H
& y! W* ^; P/ o8 l' w8 [
. y% a; m$ P# W S- P
& \% _6 t+ {' P/ t9 L; M" k
7 g5 w0 t& ^9 Z8 _; R * p, w9 p. T6 G& a( q+ @4 {5 [
3 G; S: J7 s! m. s& e$ e
the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
1 J; l% w* D) E: Z' C) p+ BB y this time it had started to snow. An older
9 M! a. X9 W( j5 X W' F& w+ Q& Zwoman running from the opposite direction was ) Q9 W1 U8 W& c5 e9 m2 y! C
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
2 T/ c) h8 n+ S4 N2 ?# Kinvited her to wait in the warm church for
( v/ w* g* }& w0 c+ F: Ethe next bus 45 minutes later.
! L; h( x: }. g0 F w) A: P) a( n8 R; H+ I
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor 9 ?5 A3 S' Q- l% `1 g1 L p
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put , l, |5 v! ]: E- G& u) a
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
# v: B) p6 W- w1 ]could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
t* w2 s$ V( \ vT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
4 `8 b, t4 G# W8 zaisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
B. v* q3 e6 _: G+ L* ishe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" 9 h( G1 P3 K7 E. e) ]
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check! w* F; T! o1 S, R3 H6 J8 u& b' F! c
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into2 }4 j [5 Y$ U, C! r$ G
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had : _# c" L& z8 S% p8 N: v ^
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . ! Z# W4 Z. r4 x
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
2 O- E/ m) n! _0 P0 jtold how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
+ G4 c6 F3 i' s; L. v1 ^6 Swoman explained that before the war she and 9 n5 A0 M: J* _ @9 S$ q4 e
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria . / K/ ]/ q9 _' c: r: k; Y$ e( g
5 I/ t) a: B5 j' E: J1 H( B, m
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
; m$ s; P6 Y/ m9 \; ^' v H3 z9 |Her husband was going to follow her the next week. ]" v+ P5 C- P3 l! B q/ l
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
% Z$ |, {& g. Ehusband or her home again. 1 k( F% c: X; l% h* P
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
, ?% v9 @ ^, s% l8 j$ J: Q6 Dbut she made the pastor keep it for the church.
' _ b4 _/ e6 Z; H5 DThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That; Y: M7 s* x% V/ s" ?$ Z B2 g
was the least he could do. She lived on the other9 [! q. W {" n+ ~6 V& h. { v
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
! b, I X" l- W% w, y: N6 T- j( t6 Gfor the day for a housecleaning job.' u/ c& V# B) Q: _- H& H% ^
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
3 a2 K& q! E% s/ k6 l9 y( `. HEve. The church was almost full. The music and the
& b9 @0 l4 Z9 L* W) l3 Dspirit were great. At the end of the service, the / Q5 c+ b! T0 s8 c z, K* Z" l
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door 8 ^2 t2 t2 y6 l* r5 y3 J
and many said that they would return.. R2 Y% c5 e/ q5 {. `& l% u9 B; P
One older man, whom the pastor recognized
5 \! N% v" v* @from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
2 M9 U% o, {2 J$ Ipews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he + B. H; w' w# w0 c( F. t1 p
wasn't leaving.
. y5 M( c9 o* `9 \4 d$ qThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on 3 t( a2 l% b. x h2 @: b& z" P: W. K0 E
the front wall because it was identical to one
6 C2 u& H, f) b: ^+ \) m- Zthat his wife had made years ago when + c1 ]# @: p0 ~# ^- K
they lived in Austria before the war and how 6 }' R* J) q# x) `
could there be two tablecloths so much alike?
% d+ K% N. Y4 FH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
2 L9 x& m! N4 N0 S0 m5 nforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was . f# g5 G! v4 g. V4 |: n; v
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
, M5 G/ g6 v' Xput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home! B l1 v8 `8 \5 e
again all the 35 years between.
; N, _3 }2 G/ lT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
5 [# \4 ?+ i: r7 M3 Vtake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten - N: L' R! Y3 ^: o+ l! o
Island and to the same house where the pastor ! N% T x. ^, \& Y; \$ {( r
had taken the woman three days earlier.
- p9 _1 I; [+ c# t, _/ h9 \; aHe helped the man climb the three flights of: r0 P9 Z5 R; A: h% m# Q
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on9 K- D$ T/ P* b
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas

cares we know He will see us through.
