The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned
% A8 }7 W5 C- [5 Q4 I Rto their first ministry, to reopen a church # E( V4 P% z6 G
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
' e. W- b0 ^# Q4 X/ B7 ]% y1 wexcited about their opportunities. When they saw
1 g! i- M9 ` {" b! B* mtheir church, it was very run down and needed
+ T% Y& w% o- g7 V, T* Q, e7 umuch work. They set a goal to have everything " C9 C- ], N( M* y# D& T- o, L( f
done in time to have their first service
_. m" c0 u, ^, W- I6 B+ Zon Christmas Eve.
$ a& G0 t) e8 J" M" H3 T H& y- MT hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,6 n, t$ M+ c- T1 E- Y, {
painting, etc, and on December 18 # c0 g. S8 b9 N, F8 L+ O
were ahead of schedule and just about finished.
, u/ M+ i8 s, ^+ d/ K+ DO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
+ Z9 g. w! y* C# d$ A' v! c% Wrainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
( l. n# @$ F5 S( f7 m O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
$ r2 l# q/ J j$ ]His heart sank when he saw that the roof had% A& \8 U; r" e( P, ?# ]. ?
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about ! c6 y: b# h2 y* g0 `3 s; g* ^
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall , U# E3 \/ ?# _0 g( Y- @+ o' _
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, 0 E8 S/ z, h% h4 a8 N2 t; C8 t8 w
beginning about head high.
4 A, L1 ?+ u5 Z1 M( A/ t" kT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
+ H+ A& B9 a4 ^7 P6 B& Y0 Uand not knowing what else to do but postpone
) _( i7 v9 o0 \4 F( ~& }the Christmas Eve service, headed home. ; j( ~2 k5 q) x% c7 w
On the way he noticed that a local business was
1 L/ J H- `' }1 U }having a flea market type sale for charity, so he y! O' i) \! _/ ?5 F6 s
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, 9 p U' T) W2 G9 E, F0 l4 W
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
. A$ L9 [( E6 k% D0 ~: [; Vwith exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross 0 W9 L$ p+ Z! Q5 y
embroidered right in the center. It was just 3 x' T/ M9 ~ o5 g1 G- R
7 W' g$ D' l" J- ~5 R e
; S; w) l* L; Q
+ C1 K+ B3 T: Y j- A. k, r3 R% Q5 W% z; F5 @' d8 \0 W/ E
' M& L, `# p' n2 S$ a; H0 V
# A9 F, S1 K# |3 Bthe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
& \, M& `7 W6 OB y this time it had started to snow. An older
! a. C u+ v* H, K# r8 X# bwoman running from the opposite direction was
+ k% e$ M* g2 H' j; }8 `trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor % J- N5 g4 B1 G
invited her to wait in the warm church for
" l; e0 Y% `1 O. z. A1 N" Xthe next bus 45 minutes later.

She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
. S ]9 P9 I; A3 C& U. J& ]while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put $ r6 i# J8 I7 |* u6 Y9 G% h
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
( I4 ` Q; x( zcould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. ( z X) R6 f8 U
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
# S) D$ l" c/ Gaisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
# d' B, R9 S4 U+ ?$ tshe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" % u/ w7 k+ @6 u+ I: [. p! H! g
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check9 X" Q- x# ]* K
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into4 U3 N5 [; T/ F/ X# c: S6 K/ r
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
! n2 t, }/ h, n8 r0 _! Z" H. umade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . + J) r. {6 D5 m, j0 _3 R
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
/ \" e1 f& G Y7 Z5 Y7 q2 K. _( ztold how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
! F7 b- S- N# g' k) @' vwoman explained that before the war she and
$ ?" R3 J3 @4 N( L1 ^& F2 Jher husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
1 V( j% H% h% ~, _# ?7 O, Q; B& n6 ?- z' u. i
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. 0 i( P; K q5 o& E- B
Her husband was going to follow her the next week.
7 F2 w1 K% _6 V3 F& f+ O& @He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her . h7 f3 H# N5 b+ D
husband or her home again.
; B0 i& G6 m: ]7 o: Z! W9 NT he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
- [7 g( o2 h: b7 H1 pbut she made the pastor keep it for the church.
9 v% d" ^! s% j/ h# T, LThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That8 g3 x& q. O I
was the least he could do. She lived on the other+ Y* D0 K; V# G
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn , E! P3 j: `6 s. Q' S2 b
for the day for a housecleaning job.6 w6 g& \! X0 d5 y9 w4 S
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
9 G! E* U- e8 K, j+ ^/ YEve. The church was almost full. The music and the 9 V; M8 o( W; Z! \- g% B, F& U W
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the + O/ X) Z# q) w% N, I+ T
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door $ R3 C0 m' P$ H6 \/ Y
and many said that they would return..
# z7 M3 _1 J0 }- y; xOne older man, whom the pastor recognized 6 I) o9 h6 _2 k( D, O
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the * m( g, s7 W& c" t7 g
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
- O- `% [8 _1 M5 vwasn't leaving.
( ?+ r! y7 I1 u7 C! V6 T# LThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
% B6 J/ G1 e4 E3 x m7 Sthe front wall because it was identical to one # E: C3 }) \: }1 n& _+ m4 I; [3 l7 n
that his wife had made years ago when & X+ \% `! o; L* V3 o3 S3 R- O
they lived in Austria before the war and how
* O$ T4 i9 r+ z- i) Z6 H4 V3 Lcould there be two tablecloths so much alike?
3 x. n. `/ T3 _% B3 q( _& x! m1 J4 a) DH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he - A. Q; D$ {! \- [+ q- D q4 e
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
4 ~7 y6 L$ h$ jsupposed to follow her, but he was arrested and8 m. A& V" m5 s$ S- M' W
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home, A# }% e7 e2 e4 V B
again all the 35 years between.
' p" Z2 H' d' A9 u7 XT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
1 a) P. n$ }% ktake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten _, W9 _# P, e
Island and to the same house where the pastor
5 F& F- L# w' J# T0 H' [had taken the woman three days earlier. $ }6 [& G2 T7 Q7 E% p5 u+ d! Z
He helped the man climb the three flights of
5 R: y( Z2 ^6 ^9 y0 o: q) U$ K2 istairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on- z3 V' t8 r1 a( i! l
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas
' C- }3 w+ Y* W5 d7 yreunion he could ever imagine.
