 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason! h9 i2 S1 r4 z' I- O. b( g6 ]+ G

) z6 b5 M% T; f6 a. Y e The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned - \" P6 W U3 s8 F: s4 p
to their first ministry, to reopen a church 5 g8 Z/ S2 n1 O; E
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October ! l, L9 v2 H h) R- j! o2 }: z! F) X& Q
excited about their opportunities. When they saw 7 r3 W6 A5 G1 S" N) \1 H
their church, it was very run down and needed * {/ ~' X, s# Z3 ~0 X0 X
much work. They set a goal to have everything
7 z$ @5 N8 R. L$ p/ m7 fdone in time to have their first service B8 h! x2 i+ K9 K: s7 F* R
on Christmas Eve. 7 G t" M3 a+ K# d
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
1 J7 z s( i. G1 L0 T- `. R) }painting, etc, and on December 18 % Z; N1 \* i# u/ Q; x
were ahead of schedule and just about finished.
# O2 p, [6 ~* M0 ]* o* y6 FO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving # N' w8 p# r. j* y& S0 O3 n0 x" V
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
+ H( r. |3 Z | O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
, n* Y3 y! j/ I# tHis heart sank when he saw that the roof had3 c# q4 @% B+ T: i
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about
- _# [& n' K& u* h. T20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall 5 O0 r4 |0 b; y G6 N- W" {
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
, }3 c- a2 F2 x3 N& b" qbeginning about head high. + u0 n" z7 ~: F
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, ) O! N- e+ d$ x- S
and not knowing what else to do but postpone ' o! g7 b* U7 p6 y4 S9 t
the Christmas Eve service, headed home.
d; E6 R; A1 P) t) y9 [. d" FOn the way he noticed that a local business was ! ~3 t" K; N7 v, m3 F
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he " D. s+ T7 k9 V: A6 C5 k3 K
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, 9 S" d$ k, ]' E# l
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth 6 Y. Z- |/ P! Y, U% u
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross - |5 v9 r7 ~6 Y) H4 L
embroidered right in the center. It was just ! F$ A! G0 j/ M: z6 z
; `' N4 U8 \! m. z
) _8 J$ }8 K9 ~+ b3 O" v ! R$ `7 O" r( w$ C/ e
( R( Y7 R h% g# V }: G$ _ 0 v- H7 q0 O5 Z; ^. J
* x5 S4 V7 a- x. \: {/ y
the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. / _, y: z4 ?: k! r" ^- v
B y this time it had started to snow. An older
`0 w5 m/ j' m3 n E6 g6 P* d$ Cwoman running from the opposite direction was
$ M, K/ K/ O m. |$ [: ktrying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
: u7 a! Z5 W; b2 W& T& p" ~invited her to wait in the warm church for 3 R6 T" a# D0 O
the next bus 45 minutes later.

6 `- X5 G& j% P; s& [ |. WShe sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor l6 V. I, Y0 P5 P: b
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
/ o& P8 \/ Z! Iup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor 4 \1 n4 @8 n% a3 f
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. 9 x1 J) Y+ M9 v0 @
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
9 L7 l: V- {* C3 N# r+ R# Y/ maisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,". Z& l& u9 h) W$ j
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
+ k6 E4 E) H! ]The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check C) l6 ]* X" e
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into" S( i6 n( V0 Q7 x
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had 0 `/ d+ f1 v7 i* O
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . ! k& u& S5 w9 y T9 c! p
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor " D A `* N# j& d
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The $ q; X) R+ |# a7 N, |) Q# H
woman explained that before the war she and
7 Q& F* n3 i% L/ m% @) s: Mher husband were well-to-do people in Austria . 4 j( u" S p7 Y
3 A9 Q% P4 x. u5 M/ e6 Y0 \5 j; h
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
' M3 k; F8 r. u7 u8 y! v/ k3 j# JHer husband was going to follow her the next week.
# {/ i. p# H2 h: S0 w @7 IHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her " k( R1 O; ^% F* A9 E' K; m( m8 Q' q
husband or her home again. 3 x( i. o! h% ^& ]2 }1 D6 ?% t% i
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
0 G; g; i; L/ x! o8 T. i5 Cbut she made the pastor keep it for the church., W) d( c7 l! e( p- A1 P+ p2 _
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That0 L' \- S5 P. q+ g4 l _
was the least he could do. She lived on the other
. u0 L. q" H5 C- G; C }side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn $ ?0 H7 ~. n. P
for the day for a housecleaning job.6 t6 i9 d2 b$ m$ W1 e
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
* {* B t$ h n6 e, Q1 FEve. The church was almost full. The music and the 8 u1 V m; O' k# g- G/ d
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the ) y' b. V$ j5 `3 m1 X
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door ; Y( G0 A0 H! b, o( M3 v
and many said that they would return.. 1 W, C% u' h: D3 p' \
One older man, whom the pastor recognized 5 _! r @# L( y% z
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
1 ]" W& Q' S8 D$ apews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
( C& `- U% E" Z+ O$ U" Z; Awasn't leaving.
; @0 O: b* X i0 {& u7 `0 o( _% O; OThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
& s; b. @- a2 D0 g( s. rthe front wall because it was identical to one
% P+ ]2 ?& l* R( M3 S1 X9 b; uthat his wife had made years ago when ) m7 C* B, f `8 ?. g
they lived in Austria before the war and how ! Q5 ?: E; p. c* U
could there be two tablecloths so much alike?
. B) Y$ \/ r i+ c5 n8 s% [" KH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
- E* G* S; t1 Bforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was 2 d5 x( ]0 Z0 D
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and4 L! s( f1 r. T" r% U. d4 |
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home
# b: h/ |8 I$ U \' hagain all the 35 years between.
# d# c4 t& f( {! t: n! kT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
+ d. z5 A" a# Z# A6 ttake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten " R( Z/ T2 z* s7 e' `/ i$ p
Island and to the same house where the pastor - U# s ]0 v- ^( `; P! W# U
had taken the woman three days earlier. ; w: J/ Z$ p S9 X4 c
He helped the man climb the three flights of
1 A% ~) M8 c3 b4 V/ istairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
9 o/ W. y$ r) ? W* ?: tthe door and he saw the greatest Christmas % _' a( @' K* @0 N* D( |3 {
reunion he could ever imagine., j2 O/ `# V) v
