 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

* ?+ W6 K. G- B& q The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned % [% Y# j/ W2 ~- ^0 H/ s* h
to their first ministry, to reopen a church
4 N1 q N. ~& din suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
2 e/ I2 Q) i+ S9 ^excited about their opportunities. When they saw : K9 J T( y5 a. K' Q! Z) X
their church, it was very run down and needed
/ m" n0 S. |; q8 ]( vmuch work. They set a goal to have everything
0 I( F2 G# a% T$ ]6 O; Ddone in time to have their first service - j5 o6 ~0 _( D$ G
on Christmas Eve. 3 q1 Z/ A8 q- x* p: X* J: O
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
6 ]+ `; f7 ^5 ^) Z- a5 s dpainting, etc, and on December 18
# R9 a. T. r7 C* O. |1 zwere ahead of schedule and just about finished. 2 D* @: }6 E4 H, r3 H
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
B* J% |" A# Urainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
- G% h: j' W# _# w$ H- H O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.+ [4 K* P1 Q. ^
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had# k. ]/ H! ?* {& K+ H
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about 2 b1 ]! k7 A7 t" K
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
: q& ^& s+ t/ I" uof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
4 k& i- j. `/ u9 [" Obeginning about head high. ; C2 L& ]7 @1 O% y
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
* `, {' w4 \0 C: ]3 Tand not knowing what else to do but postpone
6 U9 z. J* Q2 H0 [; gthe Christmas Eve service, headed home.
8 }: [# O ?4 p; oOn the way he noticed that a local business was 7 I: x( c9 v, y3 u
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he
k9 f! K, H5 x1 e1 \" Rstopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, ~2 Y" a/ s, e" c; `
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth / I6 u3 U4 a, B; J( D4 s2 }7 R
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross 0 V8 I# Z4 Q3 U) C
embroidered right in the center. It was just : K0 i- d8 F+ X3 @
, \: [6 {" c( @& T3 ]; a. P3 U$ U9 C& N" q6 ]3 \
0 @* q1 w7 n0 H4 ` s H
- D/ o; C6 Q. ]; r# x 6 r$ h/ K. _# N# k# \
# o) z A2 x, t1 Gthe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
) ]( A3 J) k- z6 sB y this time it had started to snow. An older
- M6 Q E' B4 C1 D* z' owoman running from the opposite direction was " v+ s5 V6 [- G( `/ t2 v
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor ! ^- Z; X+ ]; x- K1 R; y# V+ x
invited her to wait in the warm church for & o2 y9 _! @1 Q R' A0 |
the next bus 45 minutes later. $ E* {8 g: H3 ~7 G) y; q
" m6 q: @! D) b7 C
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
3 i t# ?# o, p; q- v( M' hwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put 5 a5 V7 G( w) q) E6 S7 q
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor & @1 r. i, J: S/ a+ ]
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. : P- [3 {$ @3 m+ R Q& H* O$ D9 y
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center; C+ U8 t$ U. ?* [2 Q/ p
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"4 n3 s$ s3 u) s! m
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
9 t, [$ Y" ~9 y- RThe pastor explained. The woman asked him to check" M' C j% m+ W$ x6 p& V, E- }0 y
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
* l; V V, i" M6 z( ]it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had # y0 ~; H2 n2 k+ z k W7 {! d$ q. K
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . - z% N( Q9 g% e1 y7 f7 E9 Z
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
1 }; X& G* C% h' @( itold how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The 0 \5 D4 x- |7 E) d5 W
woman explained that before the war she and
* B+ d( t: ?, hher husband were well-to-do people in Austria . 6 n( e1 Q, S6 q o
9 w v6 T! F) e: Y+ k+ M5 k
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
( l$ W' S9 j! s( T; a- PHer husband was going to follow her the next week.
A7 Q& |3 ?( @: Z1 q* d. u( x2 UHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
. E& O& C- D3 I& w, p9 Khusband or her home again. ; n/ Y. l* R/ P8 S; A, i7 [
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
! U' \" x% o# Y& ]* V/ }3 xbut she made the pastor keep it for the church.
7 y, W; M; j b% t: a; A% A" b7 CThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That
* h2 P2 m9 R' k, q+ z2 ] |! vwas the least he could do. She lived on the other# s" `$ ]( c; L0 [# n$ V
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
a6 Q- k$ g ?0 k: D2 p5 X3 y5 zfor the day for a housecleaning job.
4 [1 T: p5 L0 [* I& `! }W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas - L$ w" U# l5 I- a- u
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the
- O% w/ V+ Y- Mspirit were great. At the end of the service, the
: e" G+ A" V, P- lpastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door ' B/ B( d% F/ S# S( H' i
and many said that they would return.. / K1 e" p0 I3 D4 `" ?( t
One older man, whom the pastor recognized
! o( T [5 D) F1 \ Kfrom the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
% U% P2 A# c, Lpews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he 6 N2 [6 f* T* g( Z# |
wasn't leaving. # B- Q5 @- e1 S7 E
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
+ C# M( W% \9 `- y: T% D Pthe front wall because it was identical to one 4 D% y h7 P7 g7 Z# B
that his wife had made years ago when 5 h: z( T( c# Y
they lived in Austria before the war and how 0 Q$ q+ N$ K; f' |6 d
could there be two tablecloths so much alike? 4 X9 K- j0 {% Y) R+ q
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he 8 J6 S) e0 A; ?% }! x) j
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was % }- G# y- x$ v: d- `; u* u% j
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and, Z( Z6 f& h5 B
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home
) q# a/ }' Z; t+ W# }1 e3 T3 F2 Jagain all the 35 years between. 1 f; u4 X. d0 ^# w0 b
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
4 b( H5 S& G/ ~' Ptake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
! q* g, g- n* ?8 fIsland and to the same house where the pastor / j7 ]+ \" g' n$ L
had taken the woman three days earlier. . Z: Y) \- c- b+ N
He helped the man climb the three flights of
" D3 n' C7 E2 ^3 C$ f. _stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on7 U7 Z3 _4 |8 L; h( ~
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas & U" M3 |1 L, B6 H" I6 \
reunion he could ever imagine.

promises are true, and when we give Him all our

difficult at best, just remember I'm here
