The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned
; N6 P8 [' T5 y9 ato their first ministry, to reopen a church % S* P1 E L/ E U, k4 h
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
, c- j% d- B* B4 k) i7 Q9 _excited about their opportunities. When they saw 1 q' V( a; l$ t- _% W" L" {' e* Y3 L
their church, it was very run down and needed
' r3 g. q2 H( I2 lmuch work. They set a goal to have everything - S0 z0 F. [ }1 `5 y- p% i" g
done in time to have their first service
$ e4 V" C5 v+ r8 ^1 [on Christmas Eve.
/ F, M3 l* Y/ Y j. ZT hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
5 N# K( h: X) v( spainting, etc, and on December 18 6 i7 s6 m* f( o! u0 W
were ahead of schedule and just about finished.
* y" b9 O$ u u) l# zO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
" F C( Y% f/ @0 }: k) q ?' E% Krainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
/ G. A7 T8 J2 q7 ] O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
! o( D0 L" ^- @1 A# R6 Q4 a' s. UHis heart sank when he saw that the roof had
! T4 Z% U1 P6 h O6 J' ~, L/ y7 P" Eleaked, causing a large area of plaster about
- e% [% p; q% p; ]20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall ; p. L$ ~: z, B
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, " `) _7 C& L2 w8 {9 j+ l6 ?) `
beginning about head high.
* h8 \* z) D/ ET he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
7 q! L5 \5 p* s# {( E' Sand not knowing what else to do but postpone # D" ?% {2 a3 _1 B2 K
the Christmas Eve service, headed home. - z q+ J; @1 |4 D$ Q
On the way he noticed that a local business was 9 N. \: d7 x% Y N
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he x+ ]9 u. t; r$ ], ]
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
" k* H# S- |6 M# I+ B2 Fhandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
5 I6 E) I- B# c% N; K( q5 u7 mwith exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
* c/ q3 `7 C: |. Jembroidered right in the center. It was just
' y$ W! r u& _9 i% g- a2 }, n

5 P+ q6 h4 |/ o8 A8 g9 y' }/ } ; m1 Y W5 R3 o4 Y

the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
2 v/ v( [0 u9 B4 G: n9 ZB y this time it had started to snow. An older
7 L0 t( D4 c5 W, V7 Uwoman running from the opposite direction was $ C- K; j. ~" G5 G
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
0 Z" K1 h) M9 u; @/ o8 J" jinvited her to wait in the warm church for
6 q+ }4 L& Y0 Rthe next bus 45 minutes later.
4 w E0 K; O# e: @( r/ t& j: j; l: h5 R! J4 e: ~! N" T
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor 3 Z+ G( ~5 P, R; }' y {; `
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put : y0 L& x+ F5 z" r$ t1 c
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
q4 `, o6 s: G, N" lcould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. 5 N+ H$ k0 t# g; @+ u0 a) v
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
" D y5 w1 X( taisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
0 s6 c2 U* k. t6 mshe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
3 M2 ^7 k2 s5 q0 R% T* {* }" rThe pastor explained. The woman asked him to check0 n3 k5 K j, R% u- E) g
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
5 u7 J+ M$ n& z8 r L; ]it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had }8 i6 R- L8 a) ]
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . : {$ }6 Y- z" N7 U) P. N2 |* J
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
0 N% A% y2 v \4 R6 W( [told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The 8 N8 _4 R' Y' |
woman explained that before the war she and
# y0 q9 Z! e& t% [0 ~# Gher husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
. y) ~' ~' l3 j; T8 k; X8 Z" }) `
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. : c7 {2 y& G% c0 f! K2 T( L- g
Her husband was going to follow her the next week. / _* `: |3 _+ o0 ?) B
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
: U) e2 Q/ e& `( N f& V2 W* o' thusband or her home again.
! q& u0 |. `' _) ?0 A2 ^/ o# gT he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;( w2 ?* `% d/ I8 J. }4 S; Q
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.
( b8 Q6 d( `, VThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That
3 K9 l& b J% o; K) h. xwas the least he could do. She lived on the other+ P3 f7 b' A$ _7 Y/ }: O
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn 2 {- E _3 N. @/ ]8 z( s
for the day for a housecleaning job.- k3 k9 B" @, p
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas & d# k! @/ ?( p* ~% M! q* i
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the . n' R" Y& w. t; i+ X
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the : T( G$ O& t! j; i H' G* ?
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door 6 i. ?' s1 J! }$ ^3 H! ^. g/ S B
and many said that they would return..
, C; d$ {* p+ Z' ~+ |One older man, whom the pastor recognized
E. ?& u# U' O0 s1 kfrom the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
4 v a0 c4 C6 t5 spews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he + z7 B$ A# H0 R& P
wasn't leaving. ! A8 z. k! S8 p# E
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on : s+ W2 a- E! f# ]& }& I2 x
the front wall because it was identical to one ; J7 ]6 r# T) ~0 ?
that his wife had made years ago when ! M: f# ^# v; ^. Q; l# u
they lived in Austria before the war and how : T) e. `; C8 E' ~3 A
could there be two tablecloths so much alike?
% j9 J# I" Q, E2 r" UH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he N- b3 G/ }! c5 p2 u% \' Z% H$ G, v$ |
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was . _: e, @- A& O) M8 x& r' W
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and4 b( t1 ` f2 T1 K
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home% ~% S5 {$ B- ~, \8 ?# O
again all the 35 years between. + p4 w9 C6 k' ^ ]/ z" M0 k
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to - K. p* \( X( ~4 Y3 Z
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten : f5 h- }1 g: y5 ~" `: g4 U
Island and to the same house where the pastor " o r2 B7 E" ^ N# u
had taken the woman three days earlier. 6 X' {# z M; A
He helped the man climb the three flights of
: L+ ]6 U4 d0 e0 Istairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
; G* P+ K, n. F7 N1 r% f' mthe door and he saw the greatest Christmas
