 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

& }) q Y# m, O& I" i The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned
+ T' N) P f/ I, s3 @9 V9 w7 uto their first ministry, to reopen a church
! o& o7 S: Q) c1 S4 ^% h, Oin suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
! R/ r2 k9 g' C. [, W/ x2 cexcited about their opportunities. When they saw 9 E: F6 l# U7 n# u
their church, it was very run down and needed : u% h" m5 v" \0 w9 D
much work. They set a goal to have everything - ?, M$ f2 _- X- V
done in time to have their first service
: D& C' P' |4 i; L/ o- q3 Kon Christmas Eve.
8 ~, m1 d4 N. n tT hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,- I2 g# y4 l1 Y% L# ^& b
painting, etc, and on December 18
# A. L/ [0 v2 }5 D( Y2 Awere ahead of schedule and just about finished.
. {: ^+ H9 e8 h9 e6 i eO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving . b f+ Z3 K4 j8 @- F' `0 H
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
4 h# e6 d" a8 p+ ^# d" J O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.' y* d5 g5 E$ F8 o
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had
) m+ s8 _! ^6 }) ]# P1 Y$ L5 f3 V; dleaked, causing a large area of plaster about $ M1 Z0 u' ?7 I. B7 {# \. O
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
% G+ g: A$ ]0 ?* uof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
1 h* B- p: b2 c# bbeginning about head high.
5 N+ H. r. @* d8 h1 UT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, & W X, _- j4 D B/ a7 e
and not knowing what else to do but postpone
& E8 I; a8 Q" w1 k4 Athe Christmas Eve service, headed home. 2 o/ g! `+ k! A! t1 p& Q. J
On the way he noticed that a local business was
! N: I% [3 H% B6 s1 {having a flea market type sale for charity, so he c& X( n- I+ z3 f9 L; o; |
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
% H" J! @* I+ e# o: x3 Rhandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
2 O; v7 y5 }: N2 M, X9 |with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross # l3 Q) \9 W, R: g6 L$ B' T
embroidered right in the center. It was just
# d$ ^. f4 {% J- `8 R$ Y1 g4 p1 H
* B; J7 E9 H+ ]# u- A8 J5 [' o) |! y" Y" I+ F; o- a
2 X4 C, b1 i) J% Q: o
* x/ ^ B0 J; |# G8 t ) c4 j$ K3 p2 J$ A/ f) I
1 r7 P# g: b, ]( o' j1 Xthe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
8 W; u) n7 Y( r m+ PB y this time it had started to snow. An older ) S: @' n' g% `
woman running from the opposite direction was
& q2 x4 D: o" S# V% Q- Q; O2 Z: @2 Xtrying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor + N" T' h9 M' }
invited her to wait in the warm church for 2 }! h0 L. x. \9 J! Y1 E4 @' g
the next bus 45 minutes later.
, H+ c- x- q" X. U: H8 y# c
1 L' o4 F5 B+ H0 `" y. bShe sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
[1 ?: [" m. |; ?while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
: ~% s9 A1 y5 v; p8 K; f2 C( iup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
4 I! _+ x5 E# ^4 j% S3 R) [/ ecould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
4 h5 T9 {. l( ?& `/ X4 R3 y! PT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
' X. P2 ]3 v8 l6 _- O( ]8 eaisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
# J5 N( ^: T/ R2 Nshe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" ( `/ Y3 V5 n. @. N
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check% V/ K2 L3 j( [0 P3 E
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into6 S% R9 c* J) K# n
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
! ~+ N% ~" u0 xmade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . 5 d+ V9 J& l* o' n4 e" K
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor / \4 `/ _) |6 k
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
- Y% E* e. X2 N& r) g- x1 ~woman explained that before the war she and
+ } F% ]# Q% q% R2 u5 wher husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
5 o* Q- i3 @$ h; o" o, l
) @% j8 ]( v$ y* U5 OWhen the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
" T+ ^" ]2 Z4 pHer husband was going to follow her the next week. - |0 r# o) j& o" y
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
S; I1 r: q+ `- Nhusband or her home again. " N& z! N- U5 N2 Z7 V. e! {% W
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;! c. a5 k5 ?, e8 d: \. S
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.+ N) l V: m$ t- E9 t) Y
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That
. k$ F# S8 L1 m( G4 Ewas the least he could do. She lived on the other
. c3 ~0 p) N/ e: q6 H2 Gside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn / a1 ]9 I# i( [' |
for the day for a housecleaning job.
7 ~( g. ]! c$ s7 M3 x* a# \9 V3 gW hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
0 _: w7 t6 n% ?# LEve. The church was almost full. The music and the
* u2 k/ A# V( m. K1 Ispirit were great. At the end of the service, the 3 @8 S z" w0 C3 p2 b! D
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
( k: S, c/ n nand many said that they would return.. 4 \* q F6 n) y% n! P
One older man, whom the pastor recognized ! A8 m8 n% e3 n
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the 0 v- Z4 A* r" z2 p/ c% v$ d( w& d
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
4 [! j' o5 w! N( z- H& jwasn't leaving. - O" G. ]& h! [& \ D$ k5 H
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on % U! ?& }5 ]0 ^
the front wall because it was identical to one 0 G6 d, `2 \3 z
that his wife had made years ago when
" B U6 w+ A; M' [% Uthey lived in Austria before the war and how
4 q- }, t, i/ \' n( [/ Hcould there be two tablecloths so much alike? G$ I8 _& V$ i" B, p7 Z' w9 K! O
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he 6 X) \( x j" H, O
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
, I, |3 w: X+ D' rsupposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
( a+ D& R1 d! K8 S7 S9 Rput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home& F9 O* ?2 c$ i) N
again all the 35 years between.
- b5 D6 j+ O. K3 u, qT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to . ^6 d6 ~ k1 ]/ }4 c% D
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten 3 T7 \( t2 C5 t; p! ]+ H
Island and to the same house where the pastor
# x- O Y0 r1 i0 t7 j- Vhad taken the woman three days earlier. 2 O7 {- P6 Z% N# N9 `. O$ O
He helped the man climb the three flights of
7 A8 d; D9 a) g2 a9 pstairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
$ G9 F( `) I% K6 g; ^/ R7 `the door and he saw the greatest Christmas
7 E k; j) s5 C1 O; ~3 r ?6 lreunion he could ever imagine.
