The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned
3 L6 E$ F; c# Bto their first ministry, to reopen a church
+ H5 J# z- V2 Z, W4 zin suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October ! \! V7 K; k: |
excited about their opportunities. When they saw 7 C2 D# Y! i1 {& `9 G$ d8 w
their church, it was very run down and needed 0 x4 {3 u6 O& m
much work. They set a goal to have everything / |" D1 w _6 I
done in time to have their first service
; O2 u8 s; `, I% m- c' Von Christmas Eve.
9 r, a: q t( Z! XT hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
0 K+ g4 [4 a5 Y- ~9 v8 H" }painting, etc, and on December 18 y3 R( H0 e1 U! Q
were ahead of schedule and just about finished.
9 Q/ a: N. v8 L6 g. }/ d; s- x0 l2 U# WO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving : f* n0 ]& I1 ?- [( C
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. * n. r4 A. V2 v: t3 j
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
9 S }' ^+ f5 U9 F4 i( i" O! [His heart sank when he saw that the roof had0 l' A3 H q1 u' W! W: |
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about , C( U$ f6 Q: E L3 u9 }( v
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
( G3 T3 d* j5 H% q+ c: b+ Gof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
/ B; G2 g9 [ m& U/ g$ ybeginning about head high.
0 B) {$ X" Q8 R& p4 _& BT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, ( n) S% L7 j- T( J$ H1 p9 q' n
and not knowing what else to do but postpone 8 l7 X+ ~' a K1 A
the Christmas Eve service, headed home. + Y: ^$ H! X/ ^
On the way he noticed that a local business was ) v( E7 g6 H, k5 k, k. G
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he * n& b8 V6 u" y& l! H
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
3 n3 a0 [: n) Shandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
( f& b5 j+ v i- L* Rwith exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross 2 V# b- g1 k5 a4 l4 _' o
embroidered right in the center. It was just

v1 I3 ~$ ?$ x' u" d3 p( w0 d6 w& v2 W7 ~: c
& m" I \# }8 E _! V5 J1 }2 d

* n: z7 b e& \$ r: [/ X, n. b3 Q. ?the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.

" n4 `1 w, B- b& o$ M3 E3 M/ r* Iwoman running from the opposite direction was
% I# c* W! A. T- e- btrying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
! K# H4 q* r o6 d" u7 k/ Tinvited her to wait in the warm church for
5 r v9 d+ W6 ythe next bus 45 minutes later.
9 A7 Z2 A6 E: z6 N$ L, B: P2 o$ X8 e7 _1 t
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
1 x! p. r5 [5 D' _" i* hwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put 9 A4 T j6 P% l6 Y p
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
, T$ |" {6 Y' ?could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. / c% J9 p, u4 e5 l
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center+ h; W( F: U+ P/ k& O1 F
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"1 J+ Y9 @# o* w9 {) @
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" + C1 q8 ]" S% l
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
. d+ [3 L, }& V' Ythe lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into" u9 Z! N$ D+ C! b: N% R( M
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
5 g8 v$ U) L0 }/ S7 Amade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . 7 j4 b( s. r+ ]5 T" f
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
' |+ b4 {& w8 W1 Y% s" C& wtold how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
, C" Y; T2 }, ?) G, n4 pwoman explained that before the war she and 8 ~, J4 T" c) @! @3 e
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
9 V3 S0 T& L9 ^( k
3 E$ x0 O' i9 u) z$ H. \3 EWhen the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
0 A# B# o: ^) _' @, d6 |, AHer husband was going to follow her the next week.
8 T, i% ]$ g; w$ P. ~He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
' Z: ]' a2 C7 j9 y7 { hhusband or her home again.
; ]# k/ Q9 ^. yT he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;1 V/ k& Q. e/ g8 M' s: |
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.7 _" y* @- p7 l" K; J
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That
% |* e d7 l/ rwas the least he could do. She lived on the other
: U4 G) x. p& d2 f/ i' m, uside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
( j! b# N+ Y: O+ g4 H a2 ofor the day for a housecleaning job.; X2 ^, M) k* {* H
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas 6 B+ V$ i. N4 V& {
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the
# F2 r/ G7 r% r: K( ?spirit were great. At the end of the service, the * k' Z# `6 S2 o# ~3 b* A8 Q
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
* T) U- K: Y; K' K. L0 W0 K Dand many said that they would return.. 5 }7 f" L& E8 Q2 ~6 l7 p. v9 |
One older man, whom the pastor recognized ) I* b) D! k' k2 l3 ]7 ?% Z
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
8 p; y& `7 y+ Dpews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
% m, P8 B* X/ b- k$ Z2 R( wwasn't leaving. ' o+ {/ I( H4 y/ t0 X8 O
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on 4 `/ P+ c7 B- W% @2 N& q6 Y
the front wall because it was identical to one
* X3 [) O9 ^- H1 m: L$ hthat his wife had made years ago when
% d: X1 d8 G; K3 {) Fthey lived in Austria before the war and how
6 d: I2 P% j7 y8 [) Y- Tcould there be two tablecloths so much alike? ' i* c" O- {: a' \$ D$ [) j
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he ' r1 x; z- u0 s/ g0 {, K9 g4 @5 N
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
2 z! z0 H* i1 G* Ssupposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
3 r1 y) w: U& A6 O/ H6 V1 Pput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home
- t0 U# y$ N: P' c3 {" N) Pagain all the 35 years between.
9 c+ c* Q- I# o$ I4 V6 k9 Z! ~' UT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
: {4 ~6 E) g# y2 {( }% K" xtake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten ; g6 y2 s! r, l; ^3 _& d
Island and to the same house where the pastor * @" d9 R" B4 C& E
had taken the woman three days earlier.
6 c" m5 x2 t; `7 E7 VHe helped the man climb the three flights of. l4 O: P- ^8 b2 ^' \
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
0 Q( V, ?5 W% } ~- [- E- Nthe door and he saw the greatest Christmas
