The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned
+ V0 t' k1 g/ t( l1 }( uto their first ministry, to reopen a church
5 f7 g$ _2 n! P& j8 f' vin suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October & l& J6 F: g) h
excited about their opportunities. When they saw
$ q2 v/ e# |9 J: \their church, it was very run down and needed 9 B6 i& U1 B4 u7 c2 e
much work. They set a goal to have everything - n2 C& M8 W% H- i4 d6 U# S
done in time to have their first service
9 Y( c2 T4 s4 F: Yon Christmas Eve. 6 W. N+ I& r( L& u# t8 d1 X( [9 x
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,- x. W1 g) B# H, ]4 k
painting, etc, and on December 18
3 H+ u/ i+ i" M9 S7 H1 f9 {' a; twere ahead of schedule and just about finished. 1 `( B0 r7 F D$ ^# y: ?
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving * |9 i) k! W$ J$ G1 \5 ^* [
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. 8 t/ t9 H+ K* d& h) B$ F, X; b. U3 }
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.% [! R* L! y; ?, T
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had
* E% n7 S9 ^' P2 }/ x" ?! ]leaked, causing a large area of plaster about - Y/ F* t1 x7 ^* R! X, q
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
# T7 o6 s+ `7 B( wof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, & w/ d5 F4 f) l- Y$ A$ u. t# O/ a
beginning about head high.
/ `; ?0 {% O$ O! z+ x/ R/ RT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
7 y8 ^; T# T6 sand not knowing what else to do but postpone
4 R1 _) I+ }9 _& |* e' U, athe Christmas Eve service, headed home. # }; x( m8 q C8 S* H% ]& `% K& R0 P
On the way he noticed that a local business was
1 t# x1 c1 m/ M$ e/ Yhaving a flea market type sale for charity, so he 3 d6 j: J" T6 V
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, " B( i4 Y) [; o0 E& ]6 I2 s
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
2 r, h& U9 P3 |1 U! J$ a: Owith exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
1 V- t; e/ S! L8 }$ [- J: v* V/ u- Hembroidered right in the center. It was just
+ ?* ]4 ?# d+ y 6 g' O4 F) |% K& i8 T/ a
0 k1 F5 x( `) o- A4 k4 R% a U# E: n- K2 k$ t( k
7 y/ t4 Y g( X
$ z y, n5 D% @' m' Y3 A: h3 ]' O z7 S) m( f, @+ |0 [( L: }. q
the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. 8 T! `6 S3 q* ?9 A3 O
B y this time it had started to snow. An older - t2 R( k1 V0 h7 ` w
woman running from the opposite direction was
+ a. D! F5 F& k7 R- \ strying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor 6 v' m5 \! b9 H9 ^
invited her to wait in the warm church for ! ?: Q' ` |( a5 y' I
the next bus 45 minutes later. ' _0 `4 W7 [& Q+ U
$ P+ ?# s+ [% n5 F# B, ^7 o" WShe sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor ' E- Q& C' z; X# [: j; }- T- c
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put g8 X X. q9 c. T' X" S7 _
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor & T- y9 ?' W' w; l. ^! K5 N$ q" |
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. 6 s" c. M" w! o) u- n0 F
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
/ {' z/ X( j( [& W" _2 p" Eaisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"# D4 J' L% `9 ~
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" 6 O+ \2 ^) I! P
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
$ D! r$ o" Y8 \9 a) fthe lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into: C6 M. H3 u$ q. D) p7 P
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had . B9 S* k& ?8 {$ l
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . C. \( q, N- S1 Q
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
" U9 @0 A2 l2 h3 \& d7 Ztold how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The ) M6 {, E& i8 [: w: _
woman explained that before the war she and 2 o% X) K% s; v9 \7 j
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria . / U) Z/ R) j* r3 f. Q3 S( W( M
! f) h" z/ o n8 @' W2 c
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. 6 h6 R; V$ L" l/ }$ D' L
Her husband was going to follow her the next week. ( C( q$ ?# F) N3 Z. S
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her : ` D# |3 E, x$ @
husband or her home again.
( b& A1 j/ D9 B! `% Y$ ZT he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;- b# U" F' |( D$ N
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.7 n4 Y2 }/ m. b3 E& \, m; A I
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That
4 ]7 B/ e8 t' j. ~was the least he could do. She lived on the other S+ X( j8 d" U8 ? |
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
6 e3 M1 L6 V' n* W5 V$ k, zfor the day for a housecleaning job.
2 g Y) T! A6 w' P s' |W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas & V2 O7 G; ^3 e$ q# b
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the 0 e/ P, s) G4 R, U% z7 |. v
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the
2 W6 _, }9 v0 _$ U$ Ipastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
6 x" u" K& \8 m5 i) O9 eand many said that they would return..
+ C+ r: e# O6 f p) p6 q# I& M9 kOne older man, whom the pastor recognized ; q3 y5 I' o, q- J! }4 B$ H' b+ P/ P
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the q- \/ v. z! g$ M$ u
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he 5 g, S/ n- ?+ y( @* [) J; q
wasn't leaving.
( n* S+ \- k1 `) p4 K0 DThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on / L" I% ^8 M" _7 `4 ]6 Z% I8 d8 G
the front wall because it was identical to one + a- w/ X4 z$ y, l5 q
that his wife had made years ago when 2 F& B$ H6 M* v9 v
they lived in Austria before the war and how , ?/ x/ m& q4 ~, S
could there be two tablecloths so much alike? / X( \/ x4 Z/ r3 R! z/ j, I
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
% p" z/ e' }4 f2 x+ g+ C7 \forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was 9 n/ H; Z8 s" u: w% H" I
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and# e$ `* z/ q8 c* n3 r4 h; o6 f
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home
( f z" g) l/ `1 Aagain all the 35 years between. 8 F W+ E/ j) D# b1 N# B
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to 7 K/ S' E ^+ J5 i, P4 V' t
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
4 F3 z' m3 Y* M+ A3 @Island and to the same house where the pastor
! f, `/ {9 h$ r! |; Phad taken the woman three days earlier.
0 [- K' H# S6 G% k; L/ jHe helped the man climb the three flights of4 _2 u, i) g8 O. N
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on" a7 b" |% B" d, i
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas 2 e( g2 h. S7 f h
reunion he could ever imagine.- R8 ~7 U* ^& l- s
