 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned
6 [( c$ C; j- w$ p8 L uto their first ministry, to reopen a church 2 V7 j/ h& o' J7 i, J, ?
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October $ G! j" I% v: {4 X/ _. k
excited about their opportunities. When they saw 3 x$ S+ h! l [( n/ b9 y0 \" O& Z/ W" l
their church, it was very run down and needed
7 O! \/ l9 Y3 a7 v# U: t, Nmuch work. They set a goal to have everything 8 {+ [% }: l! n. i! h
done in time to have their first service ) g) T! s# Y9 T9 j
on Christmas Eve.
+ v9 e+ P8 I" ?6 q5 ^% gT hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
, x+ c( `6 K1 F1 O; ?7 A/ ]painting, etc, and on December 18
, q' K# m8 U9 `; R9 x4 _were ahead of schedule and just about finished.
1 v: Z/ m' ~6 f6 p- v0 | ]/ K, tO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving ( n5 a. d; J: ^' `3 z
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
; h4 [4 [ T4 B% E3 W1 | O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church." c7 @( c7 ]8 }+ b6 C8 s
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had
, u; u4 }0 z5 _- eleaked, causing a large area of plaster about / f8 n; k( ]$ Z/ [
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall 8 F$ T4 R+ T. S' G& {
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, ! q9 m/ k3 i" T* B5 @+ j; `
beginning about head high.
4 `! M- d- i! u4 c6 QT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, , _" z3 j% H& q+ W: [
and not knowing what else to do but postpone : b# p4 j* h7 Q5 q7 _4 r3 j
the Christmas Eve service, headed home.
4 `: C W6 H* I( a( z* xOn the way he noticed that a local business was * r1 p6 p; {0 _
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he h) H4 t5 I$ D+ t
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, 2 C3 W- ~1 A& e1 B9 `& p5 ]) @
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth 1 M( l1 z2 @( g6 r; B
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross 3 F% Q! A! d7 e% a1 p6 o
embroidered right in the center. It was just
: q1 x& V4 Y5 f: Y! z o+ P
7 i$ `4 b* c, p$ _" O) f1 Q @* N" }4 B. L; a
) w1 c; P3 y1 X' [% B
% f7 z2 U4 G! l' g% L$ k
: M( u( w. n0 [% O4 X
/ e: O0 C7 N8 F* ^% O) athe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. 1 g( n \, I5 y+ l
B y this time it had started to snow. An older
) n" k1 u7 l6 ~& Dwoman running from the opposite direction was 9 ~2 ]8 _- z3 P! v! i
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
; k! U3 j7 t* p, linvited her to wait in the warm church for
6 ~% a B9 P2 tthe next bus 45 minutes later. % `7 R# M" t7 {, y$ n' f y! j% C
/ \% y. ?5 N5 Q8 [/ w( |
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor $ K+ Q7 |& _! ?( e% a- z
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
" W n, ~; r! b1 f7 Yup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor 3 T; B/ }9 `0 b; d; m, c
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
$ g9 q# C& m' c8 g- z3 V4 _4 }T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
" M+ B- k5 l6 K) H! |aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"* w4 m8 k4 x4 w+ x
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
; V( _6 t' u% w0 @4 H" Q$ V$ ]1 `0 \The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check6 @6 {+ X0 j+ s, G0 Q3 _
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
3 s; W" q% L, V# O3 V* q6 a. O0 k# Fit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had * U& ?8 P+ r+ ?6 A8 O
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . ; u+ e7 h( c4 j& G$ P: v" ^ w& _
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor - T. h8 c3 Y; o, A
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
3 G& K. ^1 M1 C' P' s5 O( P( Zwoman explained that before the war she and
! _/ G- s# i6 a! j9 Kher husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
; R4 D# Z& q' ~" Z! a" E- u! y6 O, B$ Z' X
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
# h5 I+ l: K% b4 W5 \Her husband was going to follow her the next week.
- F0 P5 b% n1 A# d- w# {( W; l4 YHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her ( c8 ^. ]- n T- P) C j
husband or her home again. . g# D7 s3 S- Q% }/ ~. k& y
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;) x$ e5 @$ [4 c& r
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.
) [( ? b3 V- I( jThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That3 T- ^1 L/ M% g4 a% I9 k" s3 r
was the least he could do. She lived on the other
, r$ V2 b, a3 S- u! T+ t+ u, Z7 uside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
, Y( h. `7 q2 Z9 Bfor the day for a housecleaning job./ ]% c# n9 U+ G0 N. u/ E
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas . B$ G2 L" f8 S- Z0 J9 k" K
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the 1 u# e& [; P3 r+ c( e1 v
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the ! K- r/ y) g0 r5 b: J5 ~! @& q
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door 4 [7 m$ t: l3 w# x1 P
and many said that they would return..
+ k8 H" _" L) j( P6 k6 o! s* EOne older man, whom the pastor recognized - o) x, m& ^" ~# p5 h$ O+ o* p
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
1 B N" j$ F+ d( E0 Vpews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
r- q; ?1 H8 @7 gwasn't leaving.
# y1 i2 V- K, qThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
+ w* N8 [9 a' N! f# P6 pthe front wall because it was identical to one
4 n1 G' |% o( [ nthat his wife had made years ago when
" e9 U' j" Q7 |. S' r; a4 U" uthey lived in Austria before the war and how
8 x9 |+ Y, C. {3 X5 v; X7 Vcould there be two tablecloths so much alike? . V) ~+ E$ ?- ?' k m2 q N/ `; G9 x
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
, o9 {1 o( t5 e' C) Uforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was % j( F6 B* q$ |: M
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
! S# y0 m- q- W. sput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home
6 w+ m2 R. |; E7 Qagain all the 35 years between.
. O9 \, _8 e$ DT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
" Z, g6 K. z3 K6 j' _3 gtake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten - r, h0 [1 I# w/ C" V: I: a
Island and to the same house where the pastor
0 C3 C" f; k9 M; s; m/ jhad taken the woman three days earlier.
; _" h1 F5 K" o& dHe helped the man climb the three flights of7 R9 e' X- W- Y' M3 `7 @9 O
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
6 V2 A. P" F' Q# [0 L$ B; o! Qthe door and he saw the greatest Christmas / R( K2 x; y5 z8 N6 N6 c4 Z
reunion he could ever imagine.
