The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned , [4 W5 k- t: F% |
to their first ministry, to reopen a church
. r/ C$ J* o# Y* H$ ]in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
9 Z; v4 F5 k; m; p' U: texcited about their opportunities. When they saw
& t2 s+ R. Q# u0 l/ K4 ]their church, it was very run down and needed * w" v3 X1 j& w* O- w
much work. They set a goal to have everything ( i% Z) s- P/ Z
done in time to have their first service
3 V9 r7 M! b5 Con Christmas Eve. ' v; D! W: x; o9 N2 ^
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
6 R E1 H O* spainting, etc, and on December 18 + b( X J4 y9 X4 h" g# Q/ D
were ahead of schedule and just about finished.
$ X; P$ ^' R \+ kO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
) ?. b% S! P+ P$ d) X! y* {9 g4 @" Qrainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
: }' W% w& n! d- N& u" i8 N$ P7 S O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.+ G3 u k9 p7 |! Y
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had# t% D0 t6 R& H7 ^, \; |
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about 1 }! w! g F1 R$ U; T$ W1 r. S
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall 2 ~2 F5 D) ?8 U" R
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
) k! m g# Q- w4 `beginning about head high. 7 b) H* Z0 `+ p! R5 f
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
* ?5 }( J, j4 b& O1 Uand not knowing what else to do but postpone
/ z" j. A/ K1 Fthe Christmas Eve service, headed home. ; a4 \9 ~7 G' |
On the way he noticed that a local business was
; L* t) r! k2 V8 t( P9 Y8 c' \. l9 ~having a flea market type sale for charity, so he 5 u+ J0 y, Q9 F/ V1 W- {
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
1 s- T, L1 a' m; p6 ?handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
B9 [+ t" [# i* l& \0 o5 l8 T9 Z4 Awith exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
9 I2 y# `7 i: _( h4 E W! ?embroidered right in the center. It was just ; [; }, t# w& b# a* z
& q8 n- _- ^4 j4 ?3 I+ R' V
, Y$ p% g/ O% g& a
' Z6 L; m7 [9 \
8 U/ k: _/ a& L& ^4 k
3 K4 K. _% Q3 Z
, |# n5 P* V- d" ^5 U& T; {the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
8 ^# M2 [+ z' NB y this time it had started to snow. An older 9 Y9 N6 Q* I1 Y1 A8 Z2 Q9 K
woman running from the opposite direction was
* ~( f+ A6 K$ [' y: ~' X% x. btrying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
3 N% J/ m# i3 e* Jinvited her to wait in the warm church for
. | A" a) E& E% wthe next bus 45 minutes later. ! t& ]; l2 }# e/ }
! `2 c( n9 @) a8 i
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor X9 _9 _% ?- ~" l7 y6 I7 B5 q
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put # U0 i/ W }3 _, \* P4 ~& ]
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
. D# q- ^* l* ~could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. # }0 F' o$ b7 ?. ?" o1 W" o- V
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
+ X1 n( F4 D& d caisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
) B6 S G+ K9 [9 g0 R* I! Eshe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" _2 }& h& z# S& L
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
( S3 }8 \! g# mthe lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
4 `. j. T! g7 w. V \- E i, C+ J: {it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had 3 }/ @! ?" \1 V) O
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . , ]) l* @/ O z
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor 4 o |+ m. k9 ?( @9 P
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
) n; w* o+ R# ^9 s. Bwoman explained that before the war she and $ c4 `1 j% |' r- `' u: s
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
" n) S5 U- M; }
( a6 x' L" T) C3 K4 @4 GWhen the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
" K; Q8 G3 h* W, A$ ~# dHer husband was going to follow her the next week. ' o/ u. |. p& R8 S, q: j
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
; V) F7 u5 s, U' ?( {8 z' N( x. w5 phusband or her home again. 0 H* e9 o" c" j- Z( |2 @6 {
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
# Q8 ~9 s& V i9 b0 }% rbut she made the pastor keep it for the church.
3 }7 ^# O, f( ]! kThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That
6 F1 w& {1 k" _% K5 Fwas the least he could do. She lived on the other
/ t9 [: k, i% r# D( V% hside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn & v; D6 d7 D! ~" }
for the day for a housecleaning job.
/ _4 V4 b+ `2 z2 z' G$ z/ @3 z; S8 {W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas 7 s' ~9 }6 [% e1 U. W% s. v0 V
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the : E5 I% \- a* _
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the
& q' ]$ l/ d3 c( A: ?& Qpastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
8 L& L0 F& n0 X) `4 Q6 Fand many said that they would return.. 2 _8 E. Z( B+ R. p- x. W+ d+ i* e' d
One older man, whom the pastor recognized # o0 w$ |9 j2 d
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
' m" z) w. p& |pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he 0 Q7 {# O9 s7 b* X0 h( a
wasn't leaving.
7 `- j; E% U" w8 r% CThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
/ z. c7 ?# A4 O H D S% F% S; othe front wall because it was identical to one
* p8 }5 D! e- p* |* l7 Ythat his wife had made years ago when % V1 s5 j2 p7 ^
they lived in Austria before the war and how 6 ?5 Z9 B7 ?, |, \
could there be two tablecloths so much alike?
" V5 e0 u! f$ f n1 B& aH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
' N) B7 B! m8 j: g) b( yforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was & |& V. v/ d. |: f: i4 K' Z
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
7 t, L0 R% K. Nput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home C$ W: k( y! F+ W7 K
again all the 35 years between. ; o# ~, i" F1 z* X9 O
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to 0 q3 @9 d# h6 C( g0 O, V
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten , j4 e$ @7 q6 Z! O6 ?, [
Island and to the same house where the pastor
$ \. \' K, N2 e" \had taken the woman three days earlier. : t2 Z( e, k5 \$ e% b
He helped the man climb the three flights of
9 z: `- }0 _) P( L% H! L9 t/ {stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
& ~7 e9 i/ ^( s' fthe door and he saw the greatest Christmas # ]/ r) D' w1 N7 x) _
reunion he could ever imagine.

cares we know He will see us through.
