 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason2 F) R; d; b1 V: U

The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned ) t, f7 w3 [6 P
to their first ministry, to reopen a church 9 c+ ^$ c7 T; e" y1 i: B b/ l- {
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October ' [/ k3 a. \! O3 \. ]
excited about their opportunities. When they saw 3 e5 V+ A0 E _
their church, it was very run down and needed : M$ A& ?: d. k& m) \+ |
much work. They set a goal to have everything
/ M+ k- W8 K+ _9 Xdone in time to have their first service
: a4 \' ^( C) i' b- oon Christmas Eve. ! T3 `, E- ^- ?* Y$ g
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,) X8 J, t @! I: ^, {& K3 n( |" m
painting, etc, and on December 18 * Q" z! @0 M8 K t D
were ahead of schedule and just about finished. + h: M2 p: ?( g; Z2 b6 b _1 X
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
6 E, e: z% Z0 b1 t2 Irainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. ; L: }) [# j" _% N+ G: F3 t7 f9 ]
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.* L P4 t3 `: a5 f w/ o) q
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had
6 g' K, h& P" d" m/ Xleaked, causing a large area of plaster about
* Y! u) F- }0 H7 Y9 \4 u+ ^% U9 S20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall ! w! S5 D7 }; H, g
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
! S9 D' D9 E5 _* mbeginning about head high. + k6 y; ^; l6 H, m
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
# @* f( d# s/ U3 u0 oand not knowing what else to do but postpone
, P% E' `8 Z' }/ R# I9 bthe Christmas Eve service, headed home.
5 J7 L5 v- t9 g0 E7 t: {9 fOn the way he noticed that a local business was 0 ~# u. e' W; B4 {
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he : I1 U2 z2 q1 [" J# T
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
& [/ H8 [( \+ }3 k2 o* p7 _; ?handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth % ?9 A( ?5 |2 d7 q- W5 ]4 T8 k/ ]
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross * a* X& j/ L" P% T/ |9 l
embroidered right in the center. It was just * o; B. V/ t9 M$ v! M* H
+ s5 T7 n& _ }' c/ G' S8 h8 ~; W# ?3 F2 u4 Y/ N- O
4 h4 O6 N5 `! Q2 y8 c7 o& C
/ d1 k. ^* R2 o) A $ B2 t4 ~/ }0 j d
" ?* ^; C0 V5 m7 o9 j
the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. 9 p! k# d/ t5 Y* q# y7 h0 B
B y this time it had started to snow. An older 4 d; o; F5 j- J# B4 }
woman running from the opposite direction was 4 Z4 n1 g6 f" j: J$ z% g; i
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor 1 [3 R8 a; p/ }
invited her to wait in the warm church for
( ^( W4 q; O/ R5 `7 e3 xthe next bus 45 minutes later. g6 [- n8 D1 L2 o# }) |0 n
* K7 a7 {, l [8 c# m& Y3 jShe sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
- D2 G& R! i4 Pwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put $ G; K0 [; y9 O2 G; n0 ?
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
6 c7 Y5 ?0 [2 J( I$ J1 f; Qcould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
9 J+ r7 D2 Z, S2 D/ f. f/ zT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
$ c7 s+ Z9 B1 B( D% r; `aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
8 |- u" T* M( `. d, { }" J" X9 vshe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" 5 L4 \, u* h4 u
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check& ?4 @& Y* i. ?- j5 `7 {
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
* y- u* f+ k7 j3 W) Sit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had " H2 I. K R. E4 M# D
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . ) i" N* \. v4 ]2 J, b
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor . @2 t m0 H6 G4 f2 ?6 P' u& N
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
1 Z" k6 y( b% }, w: [& cwoman explained that before the war she and 4 l( f& w1 Y( A- M" v- ]2 J$ N% S
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
) Z* H( l8 _8 ^ s& `3 F: v
' j- `- i1 b; v# j3 g, _/ `- BWhen the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. % H6 H' I% y# N( u4 j
Her husband was going to follow her the next week. , r. E. x/ `+ `7 D) @9 ]
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her 4 e/ m4 y8 g- ]( T! U
husband or her home again.
" S; b' t0 V sT he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;. E' }" w5 G+ `* J7 Y
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.
+ Z! j% I+ j1 n. K0 Q$ U4 YThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That
+ s+ m4 j: o3 M0 p( r3 k( I Pwas the least he could do. She lived on the other
5 [/ M7 W' ^* m+ y/ S! p( X5 xside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn # j- r3 Z$ i; M+ `4 g9 i
for the day for a housecleaning job.4 q' Q- {7 z6 J6 p9 S7 r
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
- w4 ~: _9 O$ h. W, q5 S. AEve. The church was almost full. The music and the 2 {0 x4 F* o$ X' m6 Z9 U& a
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the
+ |% E6 n) V" cpastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
* Q. e* H2 c+ u, [; @and many said that they would return.. 5 t: k% T b; p, u( N
One older man, whom the pastor recognized ' p$ L$ }6 U+ v4 ]
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
/ n4 f2 `0 e% R2 Bpews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
# s9 w; E% g b* ?wasn't leaving. / V$ }8 K, @8 d# D y5 |
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
$ N0 ]& ?7 o' T) w" uthe front wall because it was identical to one . H7 A8 c( ^% x% x4 r9 c
that his wife had made years ago when
% X) X) y3 y& u7 I, {) b7 `0 hthey lived in Austria before the war and how y4 C8 @/ S/ N3 s. p
could there be two tablecloths so much alike? ( Z) u# q* ?5 P3 H! v/ u
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
3 U5 l( e# P- J. Wforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was 8 {& K% r9 F8 R+ k% i: Q
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and1 z6 Q- j& I- M! J3 s5 P) R1 i/ x
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home
; v- [. l* a. w- {9 O! M! s6 hagain all the 35 years between. 4 w+ E8 W8 j. R! I1 g
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to , A6 z3 q3 G# e' F
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten # {4 |/ X" Q1 J0 h
Island and to the same house where the pastor
" a% b" S [* f1 y* Lhad taken the woman three days earlier. 3 s1 z( v) B3 ^7 C- w, s; r+ a
He helped the man climb the three flights of
. O0 R' P2 W2 @stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
( M; S2 L2 P' c" @: j+ s0 wthe door and he saw the greatest Christmas + R/ }+ i( i# f R
reunion he could ever imagine.

promises are true, and when we give Him all our
& |( L/ U) h; p$ ]8 I; L: h5 D1 _$ Icares we know He will see us through. % U' ?5 h" K3 ^
S o when the road you're traveling seems ( M8 D. U) W* Z$ r8 \4 J
difficult at best, just remember I'm here
* }5 ~$ I6 J1 E% F) a0 [" I# tpraying and God will do the rest. Pass this on 8 i7 G6 h% V! V! X5 t
