 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

8 G3 ?$ q: e" L; E The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned
0 {3 A8 b, L% j; R8 J$ `6 L$ Bto their first ministry, to reopen a church
1 i, s- d y+ c; U0 ? T# L+ Din suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October 2 |: E' R& g9 b' z$ a9 C
excited about their opportunities. When they saw ! ^1 [: P# U% u7 f% y4 Z
their church, it was very run down and needed . H: e' d+ S( J! H4 J ]) J B
much work. They set a goal to have everything
$ k# L+ e4 ]) M2 b3 tdone in time to have their first service $ V8 ~/ r5 x; W
on Christmas Eve. 9 X. G' {' P- z1 _+ o
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
% C; ^+ \) g& C1 H4 l3 apainting, etc, and on December 18 + e, L$ \; Q1 Z( n. X. R
were ahead of schedule and just about finished. 8 i/ r' Y9 g5 ]/ T! ^" J
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
5 |( ~+ V' h% ^4 z( s3 J. Grainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. % G$ ^4 R$ F$ H) S6 D
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
" A: x" E* E; _7 o! z" e, qHis heart sank when he saw that the roof had9 D5 u3 u: k+ j* D
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about
! h r U `# T* b20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
3 N$ _$ b. K+ a1 qof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
; n! ~; k* t# ]1 \' pbeginning about head high. & f4 d8 Y( H5 G0 |2 M) E2 Z- K% I
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, 4 k6 o( J8 E6 U# E, P
and not knowing what else to do but postpone 9 J1 E0 H, @3 P# d# p/ Q
the Christmas Eve service, headed home.
2 F" ?6 U/ o6 z0 g! }8 lOn the way he noticed that a local business was , b4 `- F* v6 w" z( X
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he
' h, K+ o0 E- U, j: F# Wstopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, : G5 S7 B2 J# ?
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth ( o' x% j/ L6 f/ t3 H; t
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
5 U0 {$ ]1 z: n( Y: S9 Xembroidered right in the center. It was just

8 x1 Q6 n, w' v' H& E6 Y* t) ?$ }* s8 Z% m/ q
, x b% z# U1 ?7 `1 h
! k) {: Q* G( l5 \- d
. x! G6 I: m5 s! L
; s2 l8 E- v. @. p) }! e: E% vthe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
2 t y) G+ P+ x% pB y this time it had started to snow. An older
8 q' I6 Y: A4 x% \+ ? s! Swoman running from the opposite direction was
7 `/ |; ?1 T$ M- o4 K6 q4 Atrying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
' U0 E* \1 E# \$ _2 }# dinvited her to wait in the warm church for
$ u/ l" P$ F8 a, x ^the next bus 45 minutes later. % f! O) U8 x9 R# n+ r
! W) c- Y ~1 p* ]& L: X/ A) O8 G4 W
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor 8 t" I5 Y% ~% I" G
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
/ K4 R8 B! W- Kup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor 9 P' E, |8 l# e
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. . j6 M$ D/ |- Y+ e0 f3 W
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
. h, ~6 C5 T" caisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"% @5 Y4 Y% J# c3 c$ |2 }; _
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" / f/ j! R" i3 w* F
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check+ C. `/ S- s+ Q/ K/ W$ t
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into5 ~/ t* B3 U# [ ?4 r
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had ( K, j" X6 \! ?% _! n" }( q5 x
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . ( j4 L- a6 i& x
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor * I! [! c* y# y8 I2 ^
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
$ o* H' s4 `% q* ^% {$ Ewoman explained that before the war she and
2 O7 @% h& n6 L: A- U7 E. p5 Dher husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
* N* q d8 u! _
1 O! g7 D7 s( e8 N7 p# S: h4 XWhen the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. + R' M5 ^; m1 [ H# v9 g! k& O9 m% Q4 N6 y
Her husband was going to follow her the next week. 3 Z7 p+ F3 L# @7 j
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
; b! H6 R4 ` h. Hhusband or her home again.
+ ]4 G! x# b |T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;# M6 U- J; ?. S
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.1 \2 d- ^+ `6 E, n2 Z, ^1 @1 u* x- M
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That7 S( @) P# N8 F
was the least he could do. She lived on the other, G! R+ ^1 _; Q; X- k
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn , Q& m' H% @4 x+ O3 d
for the day for a housecleaning job.& D+ M7 V2 e3 Q0 w
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas * X, U5 X4 L9 D0 _ {
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the
5 w$ _. o( i3 \% S1 j) espirit were great. At the end of the service, the
2 o+ E; R/ w% n; }4 `5 epastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door 1 b- m2 W6 s/ a1 Q
and many said that they would return.. ; Y) p, T& P ~7 ~& _7 P! S* ^
One older man, whom the pastor recognized , H+ U6 t$ o A" d5 }6 Q' B- }1 o' s
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
# C8 s1 g, |# P8 P/ Apews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
+ K0 J0 a3 w& O8 @# jwasn't leaving.
1 Y I* c1 p6 `" `2 T! `7 hThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on ' m: |0 G( y$ b2 _$ B! u
the front wall because it was identical to one
" ]' }* r3 d' A& n0 Rthat his wife had made years ago when
0 {. u5 r8 o- ythey lived in Austria before the war and how
2 s. q) w& `( U( R( Hcould there be two tablecloths so much alike? ' r, K) t' l( R/ c- S
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he " L7 ?7 O# d$ @$ T0 |0 p0 U
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was & F* Z3 S! Y$ s0 ~& h
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
* r( b# Q* Y9 `$ s) m# g* Eput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home
- |4 c6 m1 f- X' }% w- nagain all the 35 years between. - d3 l; w# H* v/ F q* ]: V
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
5 z, c4 a+ |! v; `+ Ztake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
/ o8 z/ P, o% @) ZIsland and to the same house where the pastor : w3 ]# _& d ?: p7 m; d& f- t
had taken the woman three days earlier.
* @( x2 H" Z6 M- Z; ^' {He helped the man climb the three flights of0 K# O5 ~! T, A4 J, Z0 R3 K9 {1 B
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
; Y7 Z6 V8 J0 cthe door and he saw the greatest Christmas
2 F7 c" \/ L9 R* xreunion he could ever imagine.$ w. Y p. z4 M7 C0 B
