 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

" u6 v% C/ z" ?& n# d* Q The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned
7 U( {( m) P c2 m* b4 t, c* Q; s% sto their first ministry, to reopen a church
* ^! ?( V4 p, H4 rin suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October ! g0 N9 M/ |# j1 ?
excited about their opportunities. When they saw 0 l4 g& _! \2 G+ h. o7 G" w
their church, it was very run down and needed $ l* [) p! N' S
much work. They set a goal to have everything ) }3 r- R* ]: o$ v. i6 i/ z1 |
done in time to have their first service
. x; m* ~. H0 m' k8 J, B! `on Christmas Eve. 2 D, u6 K$ n( _* T9 t. f. U
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
( [; I' u+ d' z" y- d. g' I) Tpainting, etc, and on December 18
# h0 M% O7 W4 i# |: \. Vwere ahead of schedule and just about finished.
! o1 D/ q' J, ]' \O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
3 }1 M( n4 R$ d4 f/ C; ~, Drainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
8 n4 \' I: y" F. o# o O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church." Y" n+ z8 S/ d; l1 x
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had
7 P; B6 Q I( ~5 u! Q0 bleaked, causing a large area of plaster about
! @' u7 p3 f" s1 l; A20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall & Q5 |, ?$ Q/ j {" y6 h1 l- Y
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, 3 `4 P4 S3 @/ K/ S5 }5 J
beginning about head high. , b7 L. x1 t) W5 t, W
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, 9 n2 ^0 M( z% B; u* s1 }# l
and not knowing what else to do but postpone
" a0 \9 Q, K+ g% v/ ]1 R3 Nthe Christmas Eve service, headed home.
& q; t0 y5 s7 `) C3 r. h* eOn the way he noticed that a local business was 3 `; u+ M! ^) J5 m" l9 c/ b* V+ o8 `
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he
5 _$ }, J6 |/ V9 ostopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, 8 _" t* W! o2 Y4 A
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
3 u+ Z- E, O+ [7 p: Wwith exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross ) Q5 Y5 k( M8 _' D, t
embroidered right in the center. It was just
+ S# J2 b' r r& b1 b

6 v0 N. N9 c" H0 n) _, w* n% M . A- j; \- |% j# b
. {7 m: K1 ?/ M! Q- v% t6 `

7 j6 z1 y: p; |3 K, A lthe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. 4 s8 |9 o. `3 L8 R& H1 i
B y this time it had started to snow. An older ; n, f9 U! ?+ [+ e# y
woman running from the opposite direction was
6 o7 P/ g3 p9 d, y( J+ g7 ~trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor : A/ N( C* Y/ w: Y& T. }
invited her to wait in the warm church for 0 W* T2 L2 |; [
the next bus 45 minutes later.
! t2 w- n6 U' B: _; b' ]: U7 I7 n" [6 b; v/ H( D
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
3 ]8 K* A4 t9 gwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
' d/ i' c5 x0 @# q; p: cup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor ( L" V* O+ c7 y4 h$ k4 x0 |+ k/ |9 U
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. 6 R" y$ P. H3 [! W9 B/ F
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center, x6 b" Q4 [& ]% @' A
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
, A2 O0 N7 l _' r! H5 v, Q8 lshe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" " F: y" w4 p8 x
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check; m& a1 `# _, i# z' B
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
* w9 ~" j" u' \ g2 yit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
# S* a5 n) c9 s" xmade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . - Y8 q; ?. A Q: q" k* x
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor : o; m0 k; S7 l. I9 T
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
2 \' b; ~; k3 c. t) Z& uwoman explained that before the war she and 6 v, {1 `, t& ?
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
. \- _4 P) s7 X2 `$ D6 z4 w5 e0 Y* j4 ^
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. e R- z' d3 A
Her husband was going to follow her the next week. 9 e# ~; B4 p/ N; m% f% q2 l/ A
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her 0 E/ i+ {/ }0 o9 [ b
husband or her home again. 2 ~+ _2 [# K E' F0 V
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
# b' H$ o" y) W5 h7 F* Dbut she made the pastor keep it for the church.
4 G3 x9 J& `/ H0 H9 n2 iThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That- P& V$ T2 R- ^0 T# p; |
was the least he could do. She lived on the other
' u9 ^6 M# [' R* X# @# r! }: vside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
$ X! p' R7 _, t' m0 wfor the day for a housecleaning job.
7 w6 B' X# r8 w6 t+ K5 G4 HW hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas + r, x0 r- [7 c
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the 9 i* V% K" F# |* t1 N
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the
1 Y9 h$ o0 N- b/ Jpastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
; c/ I3 L! a7 W. Kand many said that they would return.. / Z a0 Y" f5 h! J6 Z6 v/ C
One older man, whom the pastor recognized
. s9 J0 P' y: q0 L3 Dfrom the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the 1 f1 g' f, \+ }: K2 P( S
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
. k% W! p% `$ C1 A ?' U6 ?0 Dwasn't leaving.
. D5 w% W3 e! W" {; ~The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on : E! ]0 ? `: c
the front wall because it was identical to one
6 R) o+ O3 D4 }5 z+ M4 s! Mthat his wife had made years ago when
. K6 @, Y7 c7 @1 \they lived in Austria before the war and how 2 Q2 ~0 G e4 Q% k$ w. j7 N
could there be two tablecloths so much alike?
" r' T9 D9 T _) W1 }$ z7 b2 q3 H OH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
0 X2 b( }. Q/ E9 [" i1 h1 Nforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was . N" U; B4 A9 r8 m% v4 i- B5 s
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and0 k3 n \$ E+ ~( @- u
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home
7 e& O6 x4 F( |2 X' I9 \again all the 35 years between. % x+ W& y" R: H3 y
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to 0 O" a/ l% I, i5 ^
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
* T8 e" _7 L2 _. L- s1 Y: D$ `Island and to the same house where the pastor
1 E. L' X# f4 d2 o, V% \had taken the woman three days earlier.
8 ?7 w% F% P7 L" h4 ^He helped the man climb the three flights of
% z, S8 v6 r. p: J) F) Vstairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
+ @$ }6 I: v+ z ^the door and he saw the greatest Christmas
