 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

4 [* ]! S% `5 p The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned 6 l: i0 d$ O+ p" }. l3 ]" ^/ Z$ A
to their first ministry, to reopen a church
. F8 A( ~# ~/ y- h. u0 H; c4 qin suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
- ~6 S# Q9 u- W! [- T5 x( ]excited about their opportunities. When they saw
* e, y, X, s" ntheir church, it was very run down and needed T( G- l& J+ I& B
much work. They set a goal to have everything
9 n8 n: I+ L, G- T2 i9 `done in time to have their first service 1 Q$ E& L7 S2 L4 s% t/ w, s
on Christmas Eve. 8 e. A6 Y; F: o, ]0 ~3 [2 v9 m
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,8 X4 s* l n- u
painting, etc, and on December 18
! n+ S% b' U' r4 ^* Q5 Kwere ahead of schedule and just about finished. * y" v& O+ g* ~2 c; w
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
4 k& U3 S- {7 H! orainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. 9 W4 x" A* J3 \- g, ^
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.) `" D ? ?7 \/ l5 K* [* a' d1 V* C
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had) H4 t4 d# I" v1 u
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about " _# @. O% @8 S! M/ i) n
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
/ ]7 Z0 y* g' s' |- V% bof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
+ u2 ~, w% L `" [ _# lbeginning about head high. 0 C/ u( E) } |( [! O/ S: E9 g
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, 9 W) E) r7 L( A) B
and not knowing what else to do but postpone
5 b) \+ R8 q5 c% Hthe Christmas Eve service, headed home. ! _2 \" M6 M1 w. m; ~# Z- F' ~7 d
On the way he noticed that a local business was ; h. X$ E6 R0 c# t4 V
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he
$ \1 b/ k8 ~; R& R2 \+ j$ R' V6 pstopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
: Q. N0 [9 u0 [, W! Uhandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
- W" l. N H! H: ]: Lwith exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross : [& L" [; f9 |# c, k0 ~, a7 B8 p
embroidered right in the center. It was just
8 n# {; i% N* q 8 z3 Q1 k& A7 U3 ~- A! ]
0 C$ o$ o0 e) o) ]
" N. Y8 }6 \* Y8 `" l4 ^
& b3 b4 Y5 G- o) t! [
8 w" @9 [4 d7 l& D4 r
( [4 \7 w. S! ]# t9 P# L0 Y7 nthe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. ' x/ E, _# x: H
B y this time it had started to snow. An older
7 m6 d2 ]. A$ u" ~* x2 G6 w8 v. }woman running from the opposite direction was
. G! Z6 C/ w+ [$ P0 g* ~# q6 O3 v) E- Vtrying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor % K8 |6 v- O4 `; _( Q! @& |
invited her to wait in the warm church for
* `8 }. S. P+ P9 i6 ?the next bus 45 minutes later. ) y3 \7 O' P, V
) _. j) n) g7 T* @8 L d6 K
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor 2 N6 p( h4 R; j4 S/ Z( F3 b I
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
+ h k7 |$ K5 @- \6 V: y6 qup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
1 S3 A5 S/ D3 |/ F. acould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
) [& V% ]: y5 M0 C3 KT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
+ m& O' c3 I( y( V G5 D$ g9 f2 laisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"$ D; ~8 G2 W" Z- l; c' R
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" / z/ ~0 M2 m* J3 \, P; v
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
$ J$ X# f8 R* P- z/ [) T/ nthe lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
- ?; N$ ~& C m: b2 eit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had # j# M! U' E# `$ e* ?0 J
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . - Z; N' A" e8 u. a
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
( N5 J6 A/ R7 B2 f4 z# ^told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The / G" r% i' `+ H1 R; X# q
woman explained that before the war she and 4 I7 d, A) m; e1 k: g
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
M$ Y y+ q+ i: }# }/ v3 h; b6 t- {1 m. {2 W
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. }6 @- |9 V; R6 _) Z+ U
Her husband was going to follow her the next week.
1 k$ D9 x9 [/ V' C, y! x- aHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
: f% |% a' H2 c3 F* i1 Fhusband or her home again.
- n9 i# y& r: z, ET he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;. I8 A1 z/ g7 M, `
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.( u5 r; C: S( c' ]7 K% {2 d+ ?$ y J
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That
) N1 I. n3 w4 o& B) M% `7 ~was the least he could do. She lived on the other
6 O2 P1 s! i0 ~side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn ' M* q9 x1 ~6 E1 s h
for the day for a housecleaning job.& A. P( o: f$ R1 p, N% Y
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
& o# e: W" `# M X: NEve. The church was almost full. The music and the , A% \5 q$ m: Y8 ]" P7 i
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the
: }0 P8 a0 u$ P: \1 G8 C/ N4 Ypastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
) ?" C+ {8 _# dand many said that they would return.. ' w# E+ ^( z, ^# a7 F5 r
One older man, whom the pastor recognized
! u$ ~' }0 M" _% M$ Y. u* Ffrom the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the " I+ D8 `( ^' q: B: q% b( ?
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
7 h5 }# d( m/ O3 I- b& ^; _% Vwasn't leaving. 8 P A* P! N) U; o" e
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on * l. e4 j I1 `0 B- W
the front wall because it was identical to one
" U, J" ]: {5 B2 gthat his wife had made years ago when
" |4 V! Y) s- s3 R7 G4 \they lived in Austria before the war and how
9 I$ f0 B6 n5 _1 y" a4 F) l; [) X {1 _$ ncould there be two tablecloths so much alike? ( K- B7 _$ W2 [
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he * z" H6 O0 X. |5 j& S/ ?
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was 1 G0 E8 N" |& X
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and1 ~# L$ s/ `" \) m6 M! B5 i5 Q8 \$ @
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home6 q5 \! M5 v9 G% q5 D
again all the 35 years between. 8 h; z( ~0 j& s. t% I5 x5 Q
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
! e- [+ V8 z3 b* d Stake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
& l% `3 ?8 C2 o6 A5 iIsland and to the same house where the pastor / E/ N! L* o- H5 j+ r2 P
had taken the woman three days earlier. $ N2 W# T% n; f" |0 \4 j) ~( O
He helped the man climb the three flights of% H# K5 a Q8 r0 g& W5 f8 Q
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on5 a# B7 y/ B5 K- y/ _) J7 q
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas
0 A" A3 }: R, Zreunion he could ever imagine.

promises are true, and when we give Him all our " {4 R' }. B+ E0 C z2 C
cares we know He will see us through. 9 M0 |, ~3 K" M( Q4 Z1 n9 V. e
S o when the road you're traveling seems
) o1 @: g% F1 M2 L9 d- S: ]difficult at best, just remember I'm here
