 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

2 E6 T' [3 Y; S1 n) c The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned . l: @/ N7 D" C4 G( b: j5 J( r# @+ Y
to their first ministry, to reopen a church
$ }, e; w$ S* R: f3 E0 v& min suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
( k1 J* g+ M: texcited about their opportunities. When they saw
; ]5 A7 X/ W+ a; {) V8 stheir church, it was very run down and needed
4 ?* e R) e" [/ X6 e/ ~1 e$ |much work. They set a goal to have everything 3 A# a- u- _( V1 j# M7 ~
done in time to have their first service
/ @3 `7 I H/ Son Christmas Eve.
4 R( i& `2 H. y# U2 V5 S% }T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
. _" M+ }) H! }painting, etc, and on December 18 ! ? M4 |3 z+ d* q1 b3 N* @& ^
were ahead of schedule and just about finished. 1 f& S' `8 A7 G+ O1 |
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving ; v1 G/ j9 }+ R l, J1 w+ l |5 o
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
# B4 l5 y; c: X% f" { O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.9 @6 ^: i7 ]! Y# ^# t
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had
- [7 X' K) L' }; b' t# Aleaked, causing a large area of plaster about
$ z( \6 F2 w, L8 x1 F' H6 D20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall 3 l# g8 [% n" L9 X, L. h# ^
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
x. {, k% R, I4 ~) W0 Sbeginning about head high. # s( {) J9 q% H/ F2 k. K
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, # q' m: M" j; ~/ I: ]" K
and not knowing what else to do but postpone ! b8 K7 h/ W7 R( K& h$ R
the Christmas Eve service, headed home. 8 q% m- T" R7 S' v" `# g5 q* I! }
On the way he noticed that a local business was 0 H( G2 [% u; j& n4 b- N# F: n
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he
, \, |/ s) R$ ?; Pstopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
1 w# i9 H* `. h( I# ?% u) ehandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth / ?* a0 h& q: j0 z3 j, y I
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross 0 \2 Z, m9 U3 [2 {2 I0 u# y0 e
embroidered right in the center. It was just 4 M4 L7 S l6 m* A5 ?8 ~0 |

the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
5 T( y9 \0 C3 i4 {8 TB y this time it had started to snow. An older $ W# ]$ i6 R2 a8 f4 _
woman running from the opposite direction was % h. z1 d3 T) |3 |/ G$ w. q: X. P- l
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
* j4 K' U9 \! l! _invited her to wait in the warm church for
/ c" H5 B7 ^, u) [% J# d' othe next bus 45 minutes later.

5 x, G6 h: Q5 n0 `8 jShe sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
: ~8 g- Q7 f" S% J( Z, ]while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
# \6 I. [0 {0 w5 ?2 `! m) f# d/ Kup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
2 I$ C9 ? r K! r/ G0 Ecould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
2 W1 N( O# p- m U! t6 [; |T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
2 z% M" m! Y3 i) ~5 _# t4 paisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"5 U. A0 i6 @* G* E W
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" % P1 c7 A* V. p/ n
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check7 P1 U; O; |4 w: V u$ F ?
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
1 J2 h! {" d. W7 {: k( b) qit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had ; d' B; q7 M3 W& l2 _9 t ]9 k0 ?
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . - W4 |. H8 C0 ^* u! N; T T
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor R3 X- m$ G3 y
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
; @: z. P& c5 v* w( X; Q* E' j8 Uwoman explained that before the war she and ( r! j4 N" n- I6 ^" L. z: r! c8 D
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria . D0 r# k! n' D, g7 l
9 z& }- q% l, _: w2 G% SWhen the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
5 E8 H2 m* \2 V( P% g; m& OHer husband was going to follow her the next week.
" i" l- ?8 v4 ]+ UHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
: v# l# Y7 `; T7 J5 F( k/ Chusband or her home again.
: i/ M, ~; ]/ N% P9 R1 d; ET he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
) w8 g! I' J# q5 }: Abut she made the pastor keep it for the church.5 T+ f" `" O* x; H J2 m& [3 T
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That
) R S: m, o+ s, }, ?6 jwas the least he could do. She lived on the other( s& j k/ n" N0 x. a( J8 k0 ^3 |( }
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
( b! W8 H' ~4 p$ A' Y4 Bfor the day for a housecleaning job.
/ J/ Z/ z! r7 @% ]+ ? z$ R8 VW hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas , m7 y* e- e1 K& s% C% a
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the 6 [; M+ X! L, S, O
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the
: F2 r2 K8 a" o2 g1 jpastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door 7 k) g" ~" | X0 |: v- M R
and many said that they would return..
# z) ~/ o8 U, N9 c/ h0 [, K, FOne older man, whom the pastor recognized
1 P. ?! L5 P4 c: z: \- x5 Wfrom the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the 0 ?5 E- u+ C( W
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he 6 o. j+ \+ h6 a2 M, j
wasn't leaving.
' F- c- ?) k) x) [The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
c( S2 X; }( @8 Uthe front wall because it was identical to one
1 O7 [( z9 h: }6 s& g* Ithat his wife had made years ago when
" b5 n2 z5 O( Bthey lived in Austria before the war and how u! n! N6 q6 f7 m7 o3 i9 k4 ~
could there be two tablecloths so much alike?
- q# [% `' E# }) IH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
! {* z/ K; p: S f+ ?9 g' Tforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
/ ^3 {1 h/ g' j) j- ^supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and% V& V: w/ q: l
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home
( A5 N9 C! \4 c4 |; ~. eagain all the 35 years between.
0 s6 D. U0 F- q2 V9 E, aT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
: x9 J/ `4 Y' @' J8 Mtake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten : t" N7 u! G" P5 R/ e
Island and to the same house where the pastor + L# h0 a- A5 e; ^$ i
had taken the woman three days earlier. / ]5 c% a* g: r% i
He helped the man climb the three flights of6 t, v3 n! o8 p. p2 M
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
/ ^0 z2 Z. W+ r9 a; {the door and he saw the greatest Christmas 5 }$ T4 c+ j. X
reunion he could ever imagine.# J r4 N0 p4 m, M5 R
