The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned N' L' c( [( z0 U- t8 @# }& r1 H! p* x
to their first ministry, to reopen a church
8 R* n6 E1 ~3 m [( j0 Y: n6 cin suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October 8 l" G! E8 P/ s3 H C& L! h& L( q
excited about their opportunities. When they saw 0 k! v8 U% A! ~' d% @- b
their church, it was very run down and needed t v* x& v- T! P
much work. They set a goal to have everything ; B' o2 ]: N' O& _/ N/ J* R
done in time to have their first service
9 {# R4 t0 P% d3 p: _; son Christmas Eve.
% v' p& e6 j2 b: N Z. H, y) OT hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
( }( ^5 a8 b; p: b7 X* {painting, etc, and on December 18
# N) Q* y3 P3 @5 U& x; ?were ahead of schedule and just about finished. . H0 \5 J/ ?" @5 O2 }4 L
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
. M! @5 Y# H/ ` Mrainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
' x1 r t# b# ?! }1 S O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
d% U5 u0 U! p% C* o! x. qHis heart sank when he saw that the roof had/ W5 x8 W6 \. A1 Z. w/ Q
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about 3 o( f6 m6 Z0 |: ]
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall / m# y! m3 B( _+ p) a
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
7 Q( A0 ~* |1 n9 ]beginning about head high. : _ j% b! U1 Q# h- T/ X) L, s+ c k( a
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, / R; K+ J: e5 c3 a$ ^3 w3 D7 S
and not knowing what else to do but postpone + I; V2 u0 D' S$ E7 w% M# w
the Christmas Eve service, headed home. 6 E Q1 o. x6 B3 u+ Q* x
On the way he noticed that a local business was
1 ]( `: T' C5 c3 ^8 t: Rhaving a flea market type sale for charity, so he
! D0 S" k- i% F. V' Vstopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, ( Y: w' r0 T6 W/ Q# g+ p
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
0 n' p* m2 T) O, Z7 Y- wwith exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
! j- [/ m* I( Z! I' L$ fembroidered right in the center. It was just
8 u+ C) }. S# W- G
: P7 E1 \: N9 [) @7 x0 {" A
8 w3 m0 j& P. M5 k$ g, P 6 E$ q* z3 [" K) k- A) l$ F; q
) M0 d; B/ S6 L- p, i$ }! }8 D% B
' j# `) U+ S3 ?
2 z5 b: I7 r3 d) g# r# N( rthe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. % h8 y4 d5 n9 Y3 x
B y this time it had started to snow. An older 9 @- `, d& x( X1 z$ ]9 G
woman running from the opposite direction was ' @0 T, Z# P! r: ?0 {
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
! M' \' F) I% ` C/ qinvited her to wait in the warm church for
) b( x0 [! _, U8 U W# R0 E8 @the next bus 45 minutes later.

, x' \ ^# c$ Q3 MShe sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
! W! G2 ~7 ?8 G# Dwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
* q4 r$ `. R% R( Z3 Y4 U# eup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
# R4 f% J7 @4 V/ N% R3 {) Icould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
2 N; z' Y4 b8 X* ~9 vT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center" y: U# l' b: ~0 N7 [- J1 a! R
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,": F; A* l$ } @: q
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
" a/ ?: k& o2 oThe pastor explained. The woman asked him to check6 T; t1 V" V& }& C
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into5 I0 {$ z. w( f: x3 `
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
9 J" e4 I3 D% H) T! jmade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
7 f. J4 ~* D/ j" j1 S: B! qT he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
5 |. R* E8 }/ ~0 z' N! Vtold how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
7 ~% E& S' J& O9 U0 Iwoman explained that before the war she and
( t$ `+ ?/ F& w O! }# o* Lher husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
+ k. E4 ?5 s( u8 l/ r, B1 n5 E+ O3 `* @, K. m8 L! M2 z
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. + h! D# I& M. U
Her husband was going to follow her the next week. ! x. \, N6 Z: T6 M
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
; h5 F& b7 s5 F7 F; Khusband or her home again. 8 I3 Q. {" A P7 X* u: K
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;9 c1 `- d& v6 I' b
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.+ m9 G' F9 ]7 G; f: H( ]; T! B* E- F D
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That" r& s" f9 [8 i, s* J+ \4 F& l/ [+ x0 u
was the least he could do. She lived on the other* T4 _4 Z2 ?* @% F! |) o* y
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
% I* z9 w1 W' _3 U$ @for the day for a housecleaning job.# E# H5 p4 s! ~) J3 M
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
/ c2 O# L% J: @Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the + M. C; [0 Y5 P4 R
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the
! k5 H' v: Z, _! r& K" `pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door & S6 @! r* _8 T! X
and many said that they would return.. " z0 P" o. y% ?% N L2 B8 u! ^' w* g
One older man, whom the pastor recognized $ a9 I0 ^5 B" Q, Z
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the ' }+ j- {7 V) x
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he " C0 m- S7 K! q' K
wasn't leaving. 0 @2 M0 q0 C4 a2 W
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
5 K3 M7 V1 M9 Q( B6 jthe front wall because it was identical to one $ F( b: g# F% q; L* T* \7 M5 w
that his wife had made years ago when ) F8 F3 {& e1 ?2 f
they lived in Austria before the war and how
! S i/ X; D! Y+ @1 W5 L5 G6 L; qcould there be two tablecloths so much alike?
" P, H, q( F+ v2 \$ CH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
" l3 p$ ^' q+ u, P2 v$ i+ J6 A, zforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
- r. k. d7 c% T: Csupposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
4 ~1 W: q0 C" U1 Eput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home1 a4 }' ?0 R/ e ]7 W; u6 Z
again all the 35 years between. 9 g3 X* f& l6 k
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
# S) Z7 y, t& p+ r2 N: btake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
2 `& `, T3 I- V; GIsland and to the same house where the pastor
& J- l+ c/ @. P. R2 L; K! thad taken the woman three days earlier.
) ]+ x2 B L; i0 w+ N' pHe helped the man climb the three flights of
j, x6 f a) qstairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
. w/ a: }+ Y4 n1 t* C3 _% B& ^0 _# {2 hthe door and he saw the greatest Christmas , x+ y4 X2 ^, Z3 o- u, @# i9 O
reunion he could ever imagine.

promises are true, and when we give Him all our , b4 L5 i# ^% k8 q3 p, Q" a9 v, Q( e
cares we know He will see us through. - O1 g5 w. U# `2 e* [; l3 Q: c
S o when the road you're traveling seems * ^! X+ E/ C8 @! P& \
difficult at best, just remember I'm here / G7 @5 q: h' W
