 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

to their first ministry, to reopen a church
6 p6 D. ]1 ^! p& Y8 Pin suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October / G( v8 F( `. d' L$ Z
excited about their opportunities. When they saw
3 H- Z4 G q( X. i5 Mtheir church, it was very run down and needed
2 B1 i# m5 I9 m0 O' Nmuch work. They set a goal to have everything
# J9 o8 d$ t! s; t% n- Z8 K; W; O! Adone in time to have their first service 3 Z0 V5 W( T' k: g
on Christmas Eve. " [& P4 Q- r+ T; R& d
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,5 v6 {) p- e$ x5 o( A4 ^
painting, etc, and on December 18
: b* a6 `8 W( n, iwere ahead of schedule and just about finished. / N) h6 \5 g+ A/ _& E B! N
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving ' g8 v: u) L& S1 Z" \5 O' |
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
( t* O' N9 P% u) m6 [) H O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.% d4 L7 A+ @7 A5 w
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had$ w* y. q% q; H# a+ Y: ^: p; e
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about
' P e& A/ T# I, p! O8 t20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
8 C0 k) i; o) l7 F2 U4 Iof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
h! O/ v9 z6 |$ A# F8 ~- n9 bbeginning about head high.
) Q7 D& r- z+ @5 lT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
- W9 B% K9 v+ K. q% Aand not knowing what else to do but postpone ; G6 G. F2 h4 B, k% H2 ?; ^
the Christmas Eve service, headed home.
, o& s m+ ]5 P. b5 e) |On the way he noticed that a local business was
; q! S8 b8 Z% |! k# n1 xhaving a flea market type sale for charity, so he
" B) j: ]! p0 V* P- y- [1 _stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, / C: V9 E* U/ H5 \& M
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth $ e; `! q. T3 ]% y t7 Q K' c
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
0 m4 a8 a; Y+ |# _embroidered right in the center. It was just 6 i8 w: r, S4 ~! e5 T" ]! r! x& S# K2 U2 v
/ q% H0 E' Y+ @! p5 O9 r/ o% b+ c( l" e {) {

the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
5 F2 ~/ ]5 x0 X$ _B y this time it had started to snow. An older ; r) G! v9 B2 n' j8 `6 U
woman running from the opposite direction was
/ U) b) f* F6 U7 Qtrying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor ) J& ?- \$ j9 g
invited her to wait in the warm church for
9 X2 ?- v/ ^' S, T. d' C) Tthe next bus 45 minutes later. 0 y: d( u2 o, v

She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
( A" R( @4 r- Z8 p' Pwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
; r# a* l% |1 Y+ ]" q$ ~up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
7 H4 M& T5 _/ u& hcould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. / w2 b* M6 f6 L
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center1 F2 [8 k+ e# Q' ~5 C
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
) X+ c* ~" Y0 }( D# }9 ^she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
( m9 x0 f' ~+ P! V) iThe pastor explained. The woman asked him to check% E2 z& D% ` F, T* W0 R
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
# @2 x% e0 X( [it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had 1 J% w6 I! @" u5 s
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . - X% C5 m b2 l, v2 H7 a
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor 0 j0 U3 ~- _" u# S6 L# S6 a$ w
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
5 u$ i0 \! A, d/ J- H; Nwoman explained that before the war she and
0 e' h/ U( f8 J( T5 ther husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
; G* N+ W' p$ z; l2 A9 p1 H8 ^9 V/ {% {% @
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
" W o7 C- A! r3 e! m: ?" [0 iHer husband was going to follow her the next week.
* i; e; N$ Z% c, H, S% V# {He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her 8 e4 s. s3 E j
husband or her home again. " z* n: @& I/ B7 Y1 @% Z8 | C
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;) {7 l; n0 S$ @9 `/ V
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.; x( _4 H' E5 V
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That
% c% r1 J9 x0 V8 l1 D$ z( Nwas the least he could do. She lived on the other& I6 ?% g6 V: p$ I |
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
8 J+ J/ Y( Q7 H) a' ]: Yfor the day for a housecleaning job.5 z* g( f$ ]3 ]- |/ Z* l9 k
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas 7 D) D$ q- @# B! H
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the
/ I0 ~7 S( w. ~& j0 s- K4 Ispirit were great. At the end of the service, the
" ]: \1 k, K9 ^- {; M+ s" `pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door % E5 A* j+ j7 k$ p P# J
and many said that they would return.. 7 |5 N* t" s# z3 _
One older man, whom the pastor recognized : U2 C3 B, u, W2 d J, Y, V. r# b
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
; A8 F% I! v) xpews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he ; x) Z- g5 e! i
wasn't leaving. 5 y. U% w- ~: U" d/ K5 }* ^
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
4 q/ Z8 g5 L! v( [" _the front wall because it was identical to one : t- f0 [$ c) y: s. W" p
that his wife had made years ago when 1 K8 |2 Z; [: _2 L
they lived in Austria before the war and how
- W% }, s$ H) M9 }* qcould there be two tablecloths so much alike?
' m5 X& J' u3 C1 \# w: G' _H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
, F, \" ?! z9 I* jforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
( k7 ?* a' j) @5 @0 Asupposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
# r. u8 G% y. R8 [( h5 F2 p' ]( Z9 @put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home0 h7 J7 V( Z! Z, k; O1 b
again all the 35 years between. ; c( V/ [* f0 T# h
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to . J5 w9 u" d6 G
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
( r k5 j$ z6 y- AIsland and to the same house where the pastor $ s- { s) d$ ?* ^: W- v
had taken the woman three days earlier.
% g: D: L2 [% ~- THe helped the man climb the three flights of
0 ~' P+ A6 D9 r2 j9 zstairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
* K7 f6 o n' U& z( p% K: a, A$ |/ s, sthe door and he saw the greatest Christmas . i" d+ r1 U0 K1 l
reunion he could ever imagine.% m: G* ]0 Z3 }5 ^3 D
