 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason# k6 v* q+ y2 o0 L

4 }; h+ [9 U& }/ h0 ^1 V: ~) R The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned
! F% Q4 t' A- I; xto their first ministry, to reopen a church $ T+ K% h F5 u$ {* O+ T8 D0 X3 [
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
6 P& V' P6 Y8 K; F2 zexcited about their opportunities. When they saw
o% j9 w8 L3 |their church, it was very run down and needed
- q: ]9 p( r' S3 B$ A cmuch work. They set a goal to have everything
1 v+ L) F, `3 B& c, ?done in time to have their first service
8 S$ R1 Y5 p5 e2 {on Christmas Eve.
! f* g. M$ x% |# |4 T9 B# |T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
4 G1 J6 _, y" bpainting, etc, and on December 18 9 k9 t5 D' B7 f
were ahead of schedule and just about finished. " _% Q0 }% z) v: `5 \
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving ' M! {' x3 o# ^% }- ^
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. 8 V' j# T: W; K |9 C, G7 r' Z, v
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
" D: f5 x6 R! g5 k8 i; rHis heart sank when he saw that the roof had L k: `/ \1 h- l
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about
/ ?' j8 ?# S+ y9 X20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall 2 [' F, [) X T9 L
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
0 I) S/ l. j0 t: ]) z, d; Qbeginning about head high.
( W# {+ u" H8 g( H3 b$ f+ dT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, 4 K8 U# g! W4 ~ Y' ^
and not knowing what else to do but postpone ( l6 c- F5 v( d: t& m" [8 L
the Christmas Eve service, headed home. 8 r8 B3 X# L K* \1 m, S
On the way he noticed that a local business was
% N; k' s/ B/ T* Y1 l( ^. U3 nhaving a flea market type sale for charity, so he , k. t; D9 Z8 K
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
2 f; s% Q. u* u! Y+ {) G0 Ohandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth $ a, O. k3 W; y. w+ U7 o' V8 M
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
! s5 p+ s% Z$ [- p5 x5 N ^8 l4 ~embroidered right in the center. It was just
! X' M2 x8 c1 y% P3 r6 j% H1 n& M: F
6 Y& c0 `* ?# t! B/ f; Z; ?! \+ e5 w7 E5 y, q9 O
?$ a3 b' Q) _& @8 i; w2 ^: O x( B/ Z7 o+ l, X# `
. O, C7 a& C% f' r
) \( J0 a" B/ ]
the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. 4 k0 L9 a% Z' \" V8 U/ e
B y this time it had started to snow. An older ) _( T& v$ o! S" n* c! I
woman running from the opposite direction was . v" e2 F0 I: o4 U# s/ S
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor * w5 s) ^% Y( C( |
invited her to wait in the warm church for 5 U4 y" b% T& m4 J1 q
the next bus 45 minutes later. 9 g& i' {% ]7 d4 f
. l3 X2 ]' h0 \* E
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor 5 k$ X* D8 t; j: U& ~+ E: ]
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
u, A% B0 }" W, N! E. bup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor * z8 @0 O6 I( R; }- T+ N! @
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
" i* ~; n5 X: J) lT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
1 m) g/ }" S% S+ z9 X- _aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
% y$ K% b7 ?" B9 A; y2 ?+ n" hshe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" & A( l) ?' `+ t+ V
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
; ^& c; h9 M athe lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
# D3 Q& x4 G- }' ]6 Sit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
& }) }6 R& u4 q0 @made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . 1 H" `+ _/ a( J! y& S2 P+ d; r
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor . X/ \3 n& s( s7 E) t
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The % ^1 N% l* l/ n* g7 G
woman explained that before the war she and 4 H8 u! e5 D; d9 F% |; s0 S; t
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
' V M1 X- k' m3 [" b! K5 i- Q) m5 q* h
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
# l+ j3 ~, u( e0 NHer husband was going to follow her the next week. 3 D: d6 V, Q! M" r) m' H) m
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
) Y* q0 e$ ^: H+ ~8 v9 R. Bhusband or her home again.
% t H/ Y! N) b! UT he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;( a' f- F' Q% K0 u6 k8 k
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.0 \: p5 \6 e0 f! } _ ^: b
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That
( G- p+ y c9 X$ K& o: O6 Wwas the least he could do. She lived on the other
3 I# X2 m4 ?0 _& bside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
+ H6 D1 l5 |7 n5 L+ `8 [for the day for a housecleaning job.
5 y. P5 x4 Q+ bW hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas * \; p' H- K: q0 R) {
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the 1 N8 C& d, v3 T
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the
4 c8 b7 x9 T1 ]+ P8 p% Fpastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
3 G; F0 B: m3 Z5 N Z( e# x6 v- wand many said that they would return..
0 t ?9 ?' B, O7 O' d/ D7 a* dOne older man, whom the pastor recognized " g) j; y9 q. Y! f2 r* l
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
8 c0 w" a3 @5 k6 \7 E2 A2 Wpews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
5 _3 a; a3 C" x$ ?3 i N1 Rwasn't leaving.
T) v4 a0 j" V- E" l+ k( uThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
, v$ X& l1 v9 r1 w0 t9 d6 W! nthe front wall because it was identical to one
# {# z* f! U+ {4 V& X( ythat his wife had made years ago when ) _$ f1 f- ^9 C/ u2 r/ s
they lived in Austria before the war and how 0 |) D' |1 l& }8 a
could there be two tablecloths so much alike? ; J0 O: H+ A. a& A: X8 H
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he 5 X4 C; d$ \ g* `
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was 0 {( e! u2 u, p" h5 u
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and# X; i' k3 ~" P4 a$ R/ Z1 E3 \
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home
6 H4 M) q, h6 S+ oagain all the 35 years between.
7 s. Q& m P: d3 S' |; DT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to % W6 i* W I& l! G! A+ @/ O* x8 j% o8 {
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
M6 [+ E' Z8 Q, ^; kIsland and to the same house where the pastor : r$ r" E3 Z* s) ]8 ?
had taken the woman three days earlier. & H8 E' X s' l$ r: @
He helped the man climb the three flights of
& J0 W, P1 A1 N; N1 Cstairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on0 K) v8 G: q7 m: [3 j! ?3 A- L
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas % r- E2 G" ]8 g+ D: u
reunion he could ever imagine.
