The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned 5 H9 h$ ?0 `' \$ |
to their first ministry, to reopen a church
3 E: f/ H; x3 V# n) t# A/ Q' |in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October 9 v6 h0 G1 f: @. p) q
excited about their opportunities. When they saw
+ o; x+ a. w8 N3 z0 l; wtheir church, it was very run down and needed
! b0 `. E' |' i0 rmuch work. They set a goal to have everything ; a, a; ]$ r+ R# U
done in time to have their first service
, h0 f. l$ r: k" Ron Christmas Eve.
4 M5 h& ?+ a$ d! ?T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
$ d: [ Z7 |6 @1 a# E( p5 bpainting, etc, and on December 18 & P- r1 z" @$ W. h2 e
were ahead of schedule and just about finished.
7 l. h8 w2 Q% I2 G/ Y0 s! IO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving # P _/ e3 @8 Z/ H" V9 o+ X
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
e0 {9 ~9 P4 w; i2 K O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.* H8 |4 C# L* Y- v. S3 Y
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had
! p: Z/ E/ f/ fleaked, causing a large area of plaster about $ K" X6 q' h8 J; [& O$ T* S I( C
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall 0 ?1 s ^3 s3 ]- L4 R* `) b9 x
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, , W/ i3 b- z' b+ J5 ~6 ?4 l( @
beginning about head high.
) w/ m2 ?* V4 cT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
0 @* T! z) m/ v3 [3 D' Vand not knowing what else to do but postpone , O& W) g$ n# \: q6 K; }* j- f! r
the Christmas Eve service, headed home.
4 F+ Z; Q# D5 u# ^, h8 B3 |; T8 A& DOn the way he noticed that a local business was
" j5 T+ G; p6 Q0 b0 yhaving a flea market type sale for charity, so he
$ j- S1 Z6 v$ q/ _" V) mstopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, ` M" I! r! j7 i/ M
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth 0 a3 ^- [/ E& z8 U$ M8 @
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
5 ~0 Y, l1 D ]5 tembroidered right in the center. It was just
8 y0 W4 h7 g; _5 M0 n
8 @ m, A# P" p3 H X) S' u, Z
, W& n1 w+ u) K7 Q M" F9 Y G) s " E* U* @/ q0 o& x* i) N

the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
$ ^- t5 D: \+ k* g( C& p* F/ eB y this time it had started to snow. An older 2 [1 Z% u2 Q$ ?, N1 H, a) K! d
woman running from the opposite direction was 4 a7 S5 B( S, L* |1 |) W L
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor % S( W7 ^/ c* ~! ]& Y
invited her to wait in the warm church for
9 Y" V- K" d8 f/ ?! gthe next bus 45 minutes later.
4 @5 {/ F9 W! _: A/ E; \+ @7 m3 S9 g
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
/ I e, }1 z; {, j) c; {1 r+ Iwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put % S8 b7 |( i, G8 |& q( x
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor * I) k% H3 o# f" O9 p
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. i/ l: {5 H- N: H, S4 K
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
p1 s8 s' I7 z& R- vaisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"; M+ W. k& j1 x# }$ x z
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" & u& @5 M6 v4 R9 \& |
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check9 g) C+ M S% K+ Q
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
: U. |! e( z! a7 t/ B }& Q" S- U- k8 s& eit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had . [5 b, f5 Y3 d h# [* q
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . $ w( _( q$ b6 X8 l( W- ~) h& Q
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
( m; F6 x3 b7 m* Stold how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The . j- |7 s7 u$ @4 K! R" g
woman explained that before the war she and 3 N2 {" o/ I* h$ U
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria .

1 b* ~9 x# q6 G- A+ s: t/ v9 O8 xWhen the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. # ~# q9 Z# n! ~3 ^
Her husband was going to follow her the next week. 7 B" m8 _/ N; _
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her ( `( N* D/ p: v& C3 T, I
husband or her home again.
! \- k8 |: Z3 E) U2 d; CT he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
m# ^8 y6 f% [/ L* s2 R) Wbut she made the pastor keep it for the church.- z$ X0 |' Z$ v& w& l+ n# B
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That
. `8 i, b5 m5 v3 i. Dwas the least he could do. She lived on the other
" u7 T1 ~) T8 r% Xside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
; Q; L; E2 g: f% Bfor the day for a housecleaning job.& x3 \& z4 k3 a" n
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
! q( W( w' V/ H5 t- fEve. The church was almost full. The music and the 6 Q( B& Y" T% j( x+ U! g2 W& ^9 C
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the
2 {$ E' p9 b3 M8 R- M# Gpastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
4 H: V9 {8 a. u H7 ^! Mand many said that they would return.. ' q( B [, w+ e% ~8 `5 }2 b
One older man, whom the pastor recognized . V0 y# S# f' x: p5 h/ ~7 T0 [
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
/ @6 U4 _" o% {/ Y3 vpews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he

( F& S$ T4 ]7 { ?; r' K3 {' ^The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
' Q) ?; v" J# s) G5 uthe front wall because it was identical to one 0 r4 q* p8 C9 O- [7 U
that his wife had made years ago when ; N5 d" N: y# K
they lived in Austria before the war and how
! }' q( W. Q' r- o- B [" ~0 ]7 F' M* Ecould there be two tablecloths so much alike? ) f1 o8 H* L2 G7 X' @$ J
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
; E1 G" E2 `/ B" Q5 _% kforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was : M9 S# @; W, }& g
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
0 X6 Z3 A/ T1 s1 ]put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home ?6 S2 c/ S; u1 k' b: u; ~
again all the 35 years between.
8 R6 ~) f% `: q, B5 PT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
6 u- R% N _# `1 w3 P9 l( i+ ?7 m, htake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten # X# [: N# ^# f
Island and to the same house where the pastor
( n- J2 J0 w$ ~had taken the woman three days earlier.
O1 |4 m" M, Z7 ~/ L- HHe helped the man climb the three flights of8 _3 a2 C* u1 I
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on9 R2 B4 Y& {$ z, u
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas
; w' | d8 t) N8 @reunion he could ever imagine./ B( ^3 a2 b0 T+ ]
