 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason- S- [; s- P. n

2 X, Y; X r" [! g- ]6 _# } The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned
: W2 y, g. d% g' H# M/ Ito their first ministry, to reopen a church + F: w9 K7 S! e: v
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
3 u9 p7 i" X! B+ |: w8 ?excited about their opportunities. When they saw ! k% J! |( Z( Q! G: ? ^0 [1 b- G* Y- J$ x
their church, it was very run down and needed
* x' T. H* D4 Q/ `, emuch work. They set a goal to have everything 4 D; G' V, a M1 A( y) J
done in time to have their first service , V f2 J& n9 Z2 B3 R! p; x
on Christmas Eve. + x7 J+ l$ \* Q t2 `! c# ?- H% Y# P
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,0 y/ v- ^' L. n5 Y/ `: K2 ?
painting, etc, and on December 18
% H' Q; W4 F1 Cwere ahead of schedule and just about finished. & P4 V* V2 {- g) S
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving 2 I* s U" k4 ?" B# g
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. % G1 k( u5 i, u4 @- P2 {+ {% K6 e
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.% m$ U- P& ?& v x4 _
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had
6 L- H0 O) h, s2 \* u! i- \leaked, causing a large area of plaster about
& z; H8 x1 T3 C3 U$ C20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
1 s" x4 g0 G( zof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
9 R f ~8 V9 Ebeginning about head high.
. n1 I8 R& C% b3 v. }T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
, b' j" s9 v9 g% M% v9 `, j' X6 Hand not knowing what else to do but postpone a0 R/ ?' [$ ]
the Christmas Eve service, headed home.
: h4 I' y) B' P5 t6 [On the way he noticed that a local business was
% t4 W! Y5 _# L8 B) nhaving a flea market type sale for charity, so he . I. F9 _" F. O- y; k* K7 _
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
3 t% l3 ^* p) X- ?1 F9 J1 j+ v; Z& chandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth ! y0 v* c4 r& c2 Z2 k5 C
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
+ r5 T/ H8 T3 `2 M6 k- C; G4 wembroidered right in the center. It was just
2 S3 n. P7 g/ o
/ G# u$ {2 ~' Z. L: B; X! E, R: T R
( C2 Z3 P1 u( U" V
6 W8 w1 H: ~ z. q
: E& a5 e' I9 F e# u, U% U" d; `+ K V4 H+ r6 e
the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
- V4 t7 p; H3 i# x. y3 ^B y this time it had started to snow. An older
. B* T- x* F, P& B- w1 P% G9 N+ Ywoman running from the opposite direction was 4 c! E$ |; ^ T7 h
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
$ N( P# M: X- Z+ N# }9 j# qinvited her to wait in the warm church for
$ ]2 N% C* o- k& y {the next bus 45 minutes later. + A+ B7 b" R: u' [6 B
5 S* o" A+ n1 f' YShe sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor $ o3 E, I: V! u/ ^# e+ C1 B# D: r
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
1 X" c: }4 U% Wup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
# ]& F" k( r8 b9 B8 l, ~could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
% ~+ F2 ^7 M( h% j$ y2 e) UT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
8 r5 ?: v( u1 w1 q* g: Waisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,", k6 h; {7 x* y, N& }7 c6 F* o8 ~' l
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" $ C3 u& @/ I( a4 o0 Q. P' N
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
0 Y4 ?6 b+ F# \. t" V9 ]3 Pthe lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
" K. ^8 f" [ H$ N0 e& x: Xit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had . Q; _2 p" t0 a2 Q3 s- m8 Y
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . 4 [! T" p1 o- X( f4 b* v! h
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor 0 @* O" {2 l- G! p, A4 |1 M
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The $ Y3 B: Y5 O; p7 z
woman explained that before the war she and 8 Y, b& i* \ Y" e
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria . ' x3 _0 a# \- o6 m5 a5 R2 a
( E/ x4 V. d6 g$ c) WWhen the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
' O) S, r; z \, tHer husband was going to follow her the next week.
- ?6 c+ k- Z# dHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her - D! k- U* z. ^) _9 W* o* L+ h3 m4 ^
husband or her home again.
7 ~! g0 Y- C. b- c) w7 e1 u; aT he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;& I/ J4 Z$ I3 O' t. r2 d3 ]; Q
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.4 F: l* X8 t/ j/ P
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That
, e$ L+ g" D# W( l k' Bwas the least he could do. She lived on the other% S4 K$ A$ \4 b0 n+ t
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn % G+ {+ g+ Q: @, [$ b. J, h
for the day for a housecleaning job.
) p, s( F$ Y3 `6 w6 X1 hW hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas / w% G* f; h2 v" D
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the
. m/ c/ `+ W: {spirit were great. At the end of the service, the
' A, w) @( D- r9 A) u' F5 m- ~pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
9 v* @4 `+ m' nand many said that they would return..
9 q# Y% a) {$ v+ r0 A* Z/ KOne older man, whom the pastor recognized 8 m& U0 u7 ~' U+ l* w% ]% h
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
5 P' c% j; l, _8 y1 apews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he ! D1 R& V8 n* E9 U' M7 ]1 g, B
wasn't leaving. % P1 N- K5 O4 N( h
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on - P/ W, F3 G) C; O4 |1 \
the front wall because it was identical to one * q/ o# L' s, `9 e. n. r
that his wife had made years ago when
7 `" i8 j3 v6 H# wthey lived in Austria before the war and how
2 P# Y7 y& _- a+ k- l8 Gcould there be two tablecloths so much alike? + E. O H4 u/ H; K5 |
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
2 K& C! \+ u! u1 Nforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
7 U/ s/ k" Q" _8 Y- ksupposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
( z9 K- ]+ `& D! c) }put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home
: o3 m# Y& B7 Gagain all the 35 years between. - ]8 |0 w6 A) @3 t! C
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
$ Y/ z7 ?( L$ H; Gtake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten : @- r+ s% n4 l6 N% W
Island and to the same house where the pastor 7 V& n5 t8 |: m+ ?0 r6 r( Q ?
had taken the woman three days earlier. 8 J+ ^# X- l8 x7 m' T6 `
He helped the man climb the three flights of' d4 i# l3 z- O: _( Z
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on) ^# R3 |6 L4 ~" n
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas / L0 ?7 n4 c! k
reunion he could ever imagine., X4 r* J' E6 a5 ~2 H a0 B

promises are true, and when we give Him all our

S o when the road you're traveling seems
6 o4 S7 v% h3 e/ z! H+ jdifficult at best, just remember I'm here % O' i' {! q0 I* M5 r3 g
