 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason$ H- c: T/ Q4 o/ L; j

The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned
1 B1 U" q3 f" X- Bto their first ministry, to reopen a church 2 e- D) Y6 Q& V+ I
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
7 K8 ]: l0 M) N: Qexcited about their opportunities. When they saw
' b9 V* S2 [6 c- G# P1 ytheir church, it was very run down and needed 0 @0 t7 b: Q* X/ K; F0 R
much work. They set a goal to have everything / o: u( [' s2 M$ n) _- Z V
done in time to have their first service : K; O5 r( y" F) x) X; c
on Christmas Eve. / B$ S% M# r, _$ V2 y* R/ h
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,# I) O3 ^+ U1 b I( Y3 g; [' M
painting, etc, and on December 18 4 ~ g2 c1 b$ o" L
were ahead of schedule and just about finished.
7 g7 f/ |; W4 _O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
& c" `6 m. b1 F1 Y, ] S+ O. G0 R, ?rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
# o; l% G! @. c0 N4 G( O: o' p O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
8 W) {: J9 S; o( D2 ^His heart sank when he saw that the roof had
$ }- s3 R$ k1 P7 h9 N2 }) [leaked, causing a large area of plaster about
! |5 a h* o4 h8 E* @4 h! H20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
( r9 U$ A' W" ?* I3 D5 ^of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
, N+ d5 l' ]' a" p' H1 R* u5 v+ pbeginning about head high. ; N ^* ~* s3 Z
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
- B) f( t5 l2 R" [and not knowing what else to do but postpone
/ \, `0 W0 h2 q% Z2 p# Sthe Christmas Eve service, headed home.
- k6 I4 |. M# Z7 s- t9 h1 X. e' f3 qOn the way he noticed that a local business was ( Q4 j( x# z. w: c3 K" `
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he
2 @9 W" V4 E2 Y: C1 {2 o" O" wstopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
( k6 N" g' H) z6 ehandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth / R( ^+ h( |: S F6 x! v
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
: C4 U1 U* {# {0 q& Q. s4 {1 c7 Bembroidered right in the center. It was just
6 `4 q& u" Q( y: r& d
. h* V7 t! l! }, I( y$ B+ S; d( ] m% ]: N- Y
! P- W( [9 f6 Q5 \- g3 _5 l) C/ t0 \
, x0 A; J* C1 z
' Z4 c) @, c: N7 N! K9 Z8 \
the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
- y1 i8 _* _' QB y this time it had started to snow. An older 4 s, [) S- Q+ Q
woman running from the opposite direction was
% C% l& P6 d, p7 i" Qtrying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
# @( `8 V8 l( Uinvited her to wait in the warm church for 2 g: Y7 b0 F) a3 A( \+ |; r$ F0 j
the next bus 45 minutes later. ( l0 B2 N" M$ E2 { [ O4 ?
- L2 Z3 y2 z$ U7 CShe sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
2 |+ e, F* x$ |# H; c$ u" A& Nwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
" Y8 ^: @" h! i. _3 z3 Q8 @up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor h' t0 ~0 d9 n+ r
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
, B }9 O2 ^: G0 g7 ZT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center- B' ]/ G- o# {: M3 x
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
3 R4 s9 _* D) C. y/ `she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
7 K5 d# U# R# z2 }, v# s" u; i3 eThe pastor explained. The woman asked him to check- K6 O: {, `& w) ~6 `% b
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into8 o: q9 h- s5 D' Y
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had # f4 c& c* f3 M+ v; `
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
8 O3 m8 q5 \) T4 b2 I' ]T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
7 i# S: Q8 P4 Y0 z" ]" p, q6 Gtold how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The 6 V6 ~" L2 `" b& t
woman explained that before the war she and 0 w# c9 T: v0 @& X9 p& |+ _
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
1 e( z9 c% w3 t- a2 X8 }2 I2 {. k: K; L8 i; w- S
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. . c: d& a: {) z+ A# `1 W
Her husband was going to follow her the next week. " z) {3 ^ k4 ^' | h; P: R
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
2 ?) r$ i( k7 { J4 q" U" dhusband or her home again. : l; c, R! J8 i/ O' j! h, |
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;' W( }' ^+ @6 u/ k# D
but she made the pastor keep it for the church., S% S/ u. |/ d3 ~! T, P
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That
/ _6 @- i! l3 I$ s+ e: s) q$ i3 u# zwas the least he could do. She lived on the other8 X$ N& ?8 G/ i' B/ \4 g
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn N7 L7 G/ i" _- Z& b$ \: t
for the day for a housecleaning job.
1 i5 `/ m9 t" |# B1 z8 d6 P3 }W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas : M6 Y5 q2 [1 {8 e' Z. d2 I
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the
/ x2 A6 H( H2 b) B+ fspirit were great. At the end of the service, the
- \% P5 ]/ [' b* t. `+ a6 W$ Apastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door 1 \7 \* q& H" k- u) {/ [
and many said that they would return.. 6 g! d3 h* B, ~. J( T
One older man, whom the pastor recognized
% s2 l! q( c0 f8 N$ i" Cfrom the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the + u6 M) `; S9 T9 i( @* B
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
! m" Y; d8 p+ \# gwasn't leaving. z3 \: d2 ~& M% r2 Q* @
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
! J% J; l6 P G6 n: T, Athe front wall because it was identical to one
! | S4 K+ o4 r. K/ j$ ~that his wife had made years ago when
+ {0 ~8 r! `9 J1 @1 q. [they lived in Austria before the war and how ) p# A- D- ?3 O. U) c
could there be two tablecloths so much alike? 3 }. x3 i! N; T& s
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he . ]/ K! i4 z2 v3 x5 b
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
7 r0 X, [# q1 Ksupposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
8 F% p. A6 m* w( ^put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home* K. E/ a3 b1 ?" P( A% c$ g+ r
again all the 35 years between.
6 C2 ~" M* A( i+ M8 NT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
& K! V/ ?* @; q1 l% v1 b, ztake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
0 Q, x, s: t1 LIsland and to the same house where the pastor ( L: |* A$ U" X. S& j& {2 S
had taken the woman three days earlier. / R3 p8 G& X: z3 y8 z
He helped the man climb the three flights of
1 z. ^; B/ W7 kstairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on) S$ H7 e# P+ B( o
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas |; `- `$ M" j! m9 x5 L3 D, N
reunion he could ever imagine.

promises are true, and when we give Him all our

difficult at best, just remember I'm here ( Q" `0 y. c8 w! u2 Q
