 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

7 s, s+ ]5 D9 S The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned
, S" \& C( f4 W, e7 Yto their first ministry, to reopen a church
3 H2 O+ j t+ S1 ]in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
. j% _4 o- y& n( p; yexcited about their opportunities. When they saw A& `# y0 w- ^1 `- `( \( B9 G
their church, it was very run down and needed % F/ Y% }) y# B. U$ M" N$ k9 U, d
much work. They set a goal to have everything " v {! S) Z( b8 t2 C
done in time to have their first service
. ?$ D5 ~8 f) Mon Christmas Eve.
$ I7 B- ^1 a/ S$ {9 A/ {; wT hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
$ Q( g# P: y' _" [7 y! Y3 dpainting, etc, and on December 18 $ b3 K$ S9 p$ N4 i+ z
were ahead of schedule and just about finished.
- g3 Q( q6 M7 g$ U0 V- @# JO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
, o& K) Q6 O" v: urainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. # I0 H8 H4 t; y$ H+ C8 N
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
/ o- D( x4 |5 SHis heart sank when he saw that the roof had
/ q' I0 h) I' ]; N: jleaked, causing a large area of plaster about : u* m9 S1 ^# ?" V8 z, r/ l% \
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
2 p! U" {& ^5 Q2 z. P1 C5 H6 w5 Cof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, 4 s& F3 K: h# v8 G
beginning about head high.
6 {6 ~! T w* [5 i" qT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, - S' E( u1 C2 g; h2 l
and not knowing what else to do but postpone - l' c1 A3 B' _# }1 g9 s3 Z
the Christmas Eve service, headed home. + {/ d; {, t" }1 V9 N |9 [
On the way he noticed that a local business was 4 z/ T0 g, r k& {4 a' I
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he
# p% v. T9 j/ L; A8 r5 n: ustopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, 9 d7 @4 S( A# B4 w1 x
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
! J4 |) A# q: V: b+ A- k6 x- E0 dwith exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross 5 s! `; J3 o) ^
embroidered right in the center. It was just
7 f, S4 l! P9 C1 p
0 P% S7 O8 e% ^
* ` T% D4 z$ G) ^, |5 `, l& _/ o
' D5 d3 _9 Q/ S6 a1 O% D0 N
. [+ g5 d$ u2 M3 t6 ?; h / V9 N* R/ \7 u% O5 _( l
& G" k- ]! d! n; T: C' A1 Uthe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
6 N4 Z* I. E4 r+ {6 n4 i; d# k& V; PB y this time it had started to snow. An older
o+ T& E4 L, g4 g' I3 [woman running from the opposite direction was
- B2 s6 @# p: r+ _trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor # j* _# c! c$ Y% U% M `& W
invited her to wait in the warm church for 0 R' a" g3 [3 r1 w
the next bus 45 minutes later. 5 [0 C% v+ c, B) Q6 `
7 n% k1 t) r% j- w; ~2 {1 JShe sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
7 o; M& I. n6 I* ?* r( Kwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put 9 y, \9 H7 [* }# s+ G
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor ! w: H( B5 x6 r" ?# ~( v$ W
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. 7 A5 Y+ G! t9 T* T/ {
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center, B% C+ l( ^1 P+ u% I- j
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"; e' _- g! Q) d
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
% C. r1 f& F2 k# U5 ~/ TThe pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
, k: r* V$ q* {the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
0 b* |- A, ~, ^& u/ k( Rit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had ' K& H q) _& j/ a: C2 j
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
; i, x1 z% `$ Y2 h1 V4 i' X- n oT he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor - [: ^) ?8 m) F& D) |
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The ! Z3 \: L$ H1 U' J2 c: z/ n
woman explained that before the war she and
" r: S# H. r/ {# O2 b& Iher husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
B y" Q' J' }) }1 \. ~& @) S' d6 W& W
$ q- k( ^ ~- N# j% z4 J9 I: P! @When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. 3 x7 m1 C3 k/ _9 T( c' B
Her husband was going to follow her the next week.
1 a4 j3 u, Y! p- S5 Z5 {He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
- x' @# ?+ a; `$ k/ t8 l7 m" bhusband or her home again. 5 C1 P1 l) z4 u! A
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;2 l5 X4 \" o7 ?/ h# C" ] m8 v
but she made the pastor keep it for the church." ]5 ]& p$ h5 j
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That# L. D! u) C3 e# | u; c5 ~" R
was the least he could do. She lived on the other2 i+ C8 K; g' p2 x) `" b2 W$ ~* M
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn ) u7 t1 ?2 ^7 B. C- }8 f
for the day for a housecleaning job.+ |- ?2 C9 U1 o6 p, }
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
4 Z7 f* ~* R+ x' Q7 X+ L+ g2 j& i. QEve. The church was almost full. The music and the " @, I1 t' s2 l3 T1 ?9 n2 ~
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the ' }+ c* _) k1 d2 m
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door ) f u! d w. {% I! Y4 K
and many said that they would return.. 7 V3 F! w8 J9 b' f1 ~
One older man, whom the pastor recognized
7 t% n& m: p& ^. m/ I, _from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
5 Z' t* h" m k, J' l$ v; F4 dpews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he 6 {4 }. n( V& E5 a) G6 |
wasn't leaving. " Y- p7 g1 C& f& j' V) S( |2 K/ J% z
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on ( ^ x B/ L& J
the front wall because it was identical to one
1 {& L3 h) i; A) i2 f: E# gthat his wife had made years ago when 7 d. G8 j* a8 G7 l) D
they lived in Austria before the war and how 9 F$ f4 I: H5 Z
could there be two tablecloths so much alike?
- W. I% \4 d* q: Z4 A3 `7 ]" XH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
# j$ r# g! C& q, o, kforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was F# @) a7 c' `
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and; A6 I. H, {* d
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home: U% Q# x# q! J
again all the 35 years between.
2 l; y1 E/ f- h( { _* Z% HT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
# `' N0 _$ P0 s1 Otake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten % f+ Y5 |1 |" r% I# {) D
Island and to the same house where the pastor . F4 s, @. N$ g' _7 M* _
had taken the woman three days earlier. , c3 t, u- ^8 y- _
He helped the man climb the three flights of. Z2 a$ Y3 Y6 r2 [, y; h1 W% V
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
, t: L' ]7 D0 ^5 ythe door and he saw the greatest Christmas
) j" i' |3 ]( J3 d% ~2 t" @reunion he could ever imagine.1 ~! b* ^( B0 m( n/ f
