The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned 3 a2 r: m" y+ X4 w6 ?
to their first ministry, to reopen a church
! l. ~& n7 m1 min suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
7 f0 ^7 B- [8 y4 }% r+ uexcited about their opportunities. When they saw
0 W" ?' e9 p, Y$ ^# w( otheir church, it was very run down and needed 2 ^* r, J4 T# A+ o+ S Y% B
much work. They set a goal to have everything 4 B+ F2 g6 l$ U5 T8 l( i- D
done in time to have their first service
6 E9 Y K l: f2 {% Jon Christmas Eve. : z! i% B/ H. T3 B: c A
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
: L% u# b7 P: _4 q) l/ }9 Ypainting, etc, and on December 18
4 Q P6 L$ o$ C8 G l4 Jwere ahead of schedule and just about finished.
( z X7 D4 N T ?1 u3 Q D# wO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving 2 Z) m) j& J6 R* c' y% I
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
9 t1 _* g, J6 Y O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
7 S- u3 H0 |9 ?His heart sank when he saw that the roof had4 ~' W3 o' n" N
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about : R$ P: S* K- f4 ?7 H$ v B9 c' Y
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
# Y4 j5 M! b7 w; A3 gof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
' y5 c; p- z, t) gbeginning about head high. , r8 D& L* M# r9 c! i
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
& v; A( o/ l0 ^' o b$ R) Mand not knowing what else to do but postpone
+ F, ?$ V& \" r ]" Tthe Christmas Eve service, headed home.
3 ~5 c; Q+ F" l+ ~On the way he noticed that a local business was : {. J! J) ~8 s' w/ G- T. J
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he $ _+ i* O4 D9 S2 y
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, 6 z6 F7 y+ J" |/ g. o! l+ y) N b
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth ^7 o( x% c7 }5 ~: H
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross + Y5 M3 m; E* J/ O* Y& ^
embroidered right in the center. It was just . A0 P. j, d# j! G

- X# a" _$ ^5 u) U* X8 M U4 R a
& Q3 E1 Y8 r, {

8 c n# I4 o( f, o" N( h& Xthe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
\1 J' ]& j4 Y5 o' Y! v6 sB y this time it had started to snow. An older 6 ~+ ] u6 m* ~
woman running from the opposite direction was 7 G, | x# C1 T2 e# a3 Z
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor $ f+ y( R% l6 L1 e0 N
invited her to wait in the warm church for $ N x; @6 J. g
the next bus 45 minutes later. " E, x# p. V2 \# J) F" L r( x1 ?
' @" Z* G1 H$ L( J
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor ) N' |- b/ A" Y# v! q1 F2 _
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
! H+ _4 |. j& ~+ j5 u; Fup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
; p8 c+ r( E* @could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
* h" V% p1 e3 k/ w, \5 YT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center* `, M, K2 F1 M) b0 l
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
+ V. a c! n0 p- ashe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
6 g8 W& J T9 P2 r5 V2 ]; RThe pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
6 W$ ?1 V$ M2 |the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
/ E' t$ s }+ p/ n0 {, s) U/ Q0 ]) p! xit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
) U! ]1 M6 _1 t/ t7 Rmade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . 4 _' ?: y3 z9 {/ L* C6 n* B
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
+ ]* [" L9 `6 o* D$ `told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The * C5 J: E% R3 n/ s, ]
woman explained that before the war she and
- t9 {; q# h4 Zher husband were well-to-do people in Austria . 4 t' G+ p& A5 V: c3 `0 B* M% Q
d; P: W1 b- V
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. / j- k( T: _3 Y7 j
Her husband was going to follow her the next week. ; O8 f4 C% f5 z; p, s
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
+ Z! k8 [6 C7 s2 b0 Fhusband or her home again.
+ \# ^9 j- n LT he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
6 H0 m7 I0 ]: P+ T3 |but she made the pastor keep it for the church.
0 e# u! W+ F) NThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That
$ r$ l9 ^+ ?; Y- jwas the least he could do. She lived on the other8 y& t% ?/ p6 T, v" D( H( @
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
' G4 C+ W' Q* D6 rfor the day for a housecleaning job.
9 G% R) q) f& M( J# D. CW hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
% _2 @$ y1 I+ I" fEve. The church was almost full. The music and the ) l# ~& J% d7 {: {' a1 s5 u1 p0 A
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the ! q( Y5 t; J; I1 Z! o" \% i
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door `) ?8 g' ?) _# l
and many said that they would return.. d# ? o& V; m5 m1 S
One older man, whom the pastor recognized
% s# F9 I, S; c% P; {8 Y8 ifrom the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
, ~4 R! v# W7 }/ dpews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he : ~4 V. C, Z6 x8 P' G9 H3 x
wasn't leaving.
9 ], k1 @6 m3 u/ V" I$ p. nThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on . n. P9 ?3 p: Y+ }
the front wall because it was identical to one
( I) D! r2 A# D. a$ T8 {that his wife had made years ago when
: T& q" b# t2 o: d. ]5 `they lived in Austria before the war and how / w5 C2 R8 O8 P2 ]3 ]
could there be two tablecloths so much alike? % m4 f6 n. X* Q& k
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he 8 ^- E6 C; H& C
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was : `3 [' g3 ^* c7 P+ }
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and; P% N' [2 f7 ?- ]
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home
: P- x9 j; p. ^) ]6 Z Ragain all the 35 years between. - o4 p. p$ S F
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
# k h- K( o4 L9 m1 Btake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten 4 y; s2 `8 I; X3 I+ l, G! s
Island and to the same house where the pastor
: c% `: M3 f2 q7 w8 ]had taken the woman three days earlier.
9 ^# @, X% _7 G4 C: ~) n: ~He helped the man climb the three flights of7 V; K0 v5 n4 b. [3 d+ G
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on7 {2 }( \. ?9 ?) v
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas

cares we know He will see us through.

difficult at best, just remember I'm here . J3 K! l# C: ]9 e4 m
