 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned ; s6 \$ H6 [% ^" u( f) q2 L
to their first ministry, to reopen a church
( b: E* s3 s) W% U7 e' J; K% Nin suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October , Y& A: b0 s1 f
excited about their opportunities. When they saw
: a9 V" V4 m1 n* G; N4 l" V3 jtheir church, it was very run down and needed 8 w2 B9 O: k4 F2 a
much work. They set a goal to have everything 7 p$ L4 A, W" j# a* @1 y2 o) N3 x
done in time to have their first service
; A/ }" f( O/ P( N- n1 T, Von Christmas Eve. / k' q& {- J+ t2 p
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,6 @- q% _; w% r
painting, etc, and on December 18 " j2 `+ D9 Q% I, ~
were ahead of schedule and just about finished. 4 e3 v' ^! T2 n# d0 K
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
0 o C9 Z! l/ q7 ~+ ^* H1 krainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
/ C# p) v3 ^4 M3 }3 N" j4 w+ ~ O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.) K) ^+ y% g; z7 |& a; g1 E1 G
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had
, G8 x! A" G7 R1 s2 e% G5 ?5 lleaked, causing a large area of plaster about
% D9 Q7 Q/ \1 b3 G$ X* G6 Z20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall * ~) e# N A# L% ~
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, 0 G2 A q, y3 \6 C) X9 n
beginning about head high. & i6 s+ L9 x: t, H
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, 8 M9 {# l" g( ^+ h+ q2 Y/ h
and not knowing what else to do but postpone
5 ^2 F5 o: G% a! M" J+ Rthe Christmas Eve service, headed home. 9 m. ?0 z: e. G0 u( b& m
On the way he noticed that a local business was 3 n% u- w$ X6 f
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he 5 M- E$ U) {* j. ]% V; n) Q
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
$ L: k" \- U; M+ Ehandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth 4 o% w+ _4 s" s; T: H
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross 2 Y( ?5 V0 }9 I, W ~. l" g
embroidered right in the center. It was just 0 T3 t; K+ y Z' y
B' i+ |2 l( b+ w
3 m# x% W, `/ R1 x1 o : E! R6 c' g2 E2 l+ e7 y
+ x2 F' V. O1 q9 W$ E K# n. l ! m) c% E$ y4 Z
7 j% W6 d! |7 Q5 r8 G' c2 n
the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
- m9 ]& K/ Y5 _5 l" X! fB y this time it had started to snow. An older G5 w$ P" e4 W) o7 N. a
woman running from the opposite direction was
* N* e/ ~' U1 r) s+ Atrying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor / E' I5 y* u" s) z! U; @" T
invited her to wait in the warm church for ( v S7 m5 }& \- I: ^$ N/ a
the next bus 45 minutes later.
# O5 \$ G( J+ M6 P/ d+ A6 q+ a9 M+ Z
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor ! q$ d' a& s9 N
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
A% Z3 H1 F: N% w9 @% {9 }+ sup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor ! Y2 l) r8 N9 R2 A3 r8 j
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
2 `, W" p9 _/ D# AT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
6 |1 i% a% p; Z0 R4 G, b. f8 caisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
4 r* g" T$ O% Z, Hshe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" ( @% |' i4 _4 ~) M
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
% N# i. N* r3 @, h# r+ M& Lthe lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
' {" g6 Y3 R3 C) Y: tit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
" h' Z, H, U* I- v. m: R- n3 rmade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
+ P6 w6 U) T% z$ w* Q% e! KT he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor $ z- n3 c. R2 n0 A( z
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The & S; v' _( i" P7 q- ?9 p
woman explained that before the war she and ! Y7 A9 R% r/ a: X8 N
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria . / T" O9 `9 k4 z1 m* w# k* V4 r
# C3 T7 b8 G7 A7 c! _* W/ @4 U a7 p
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. & A! i- j& [# S2 D1 V1 X2 I: U
Her husband was going to follow her the next week.
6 V3 ?# g. e) JHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
5 j$ ? `- C1 N' f" B) P+ f7 nhusband or her home again. / D" ]* ~5 f+ s% |* J
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;: l& @; u4 i! A
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.
. B- h% z A( b$ h$ L5 z. cThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That: W$ |9 ~! f! O& Z8 j
was the least he could do. She lived on the other
: [+ s/ S- G O; jside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn , o, L U8 W+ ~. Q2 C
for the day for a housecleaning job.
3 N& f$ F# o4 P& Y( ?4 MW hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
& \9 f0 a8 \- x, }7 ]. L. V1 T0 PEve. The church was almost full. The music and the ; |3 n% M5 Y) u& @4 c) s
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the
0 r9 ? U( J3 [/ h3 X- Upastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
2 `* ?) ~; d9 @% n7 Gand many said that they would return..
% j1 r+ `6 N( H" mOne older man, whom the pastor recognized ' i' ~" f7 X% h5 _, G5 M
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the * H7 r1 T" t0 K; g I. v
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
! a% B8 ~4 q6 T- l( pwasn't leaving. 9 `; P5 e3 p: f p6 J
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on # @+ R o0 x, ` Q4 m
the front wall because it was identical to one : N& \5 R3 N* u! x; C; k4 f- ]
that his wife had made years ago when & h9 O! v4 [- w3 r# O! M( }
they lived in Austria before the war and how - @ _( B4 q5 L+ a6 X1 ^
could there be two tablecloths so much alike?
8 l# y, m( w$ w+ HH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
& i+ B' O3 j; O; x. [) X/ iforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
. j% f" w' \! y" `! ~supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
! L- z$ y1 r7 @9 X' ]put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home
" ?2 f: B2 E. z9 G6 ?; Wagain all the 35 years between. ; b/ b1 H: X# k# t9 C; b
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
) p3 T2 I4 E' g" E0 T9 U& qtake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten 1 R$ w4 V0 m0 Q/ x( ?; H
Island and to the same house where the pastor + O, H$ L: q, c( }9 h
had taken the woman three days earlier. ( Q+ _5 h5 k9 `# A: _2 u: c6 | ]7 W
He helped the man climb the three flights of8 H0 B1 P! s2 Q6 y
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on( [8 L) J1 {! X( y& u4 O/ g
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas
