 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned w j8 S4 n6 l+ t" J+ S2 ?
to their first ministry, to reopen a church
0 p8 _$ O% p) [& fin suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
7 K, V, W( g6 c. l- H) e& Sexcited about their opportunities. When they saw
& W- ~2 M1 M3 n$ I% l( xtheir church, it was very run down and needed - k- q- m; Q" E( D2 S [
much work. They set a goal to have everything % y, I+ i- s) D4 Z& A+ ?4 W
done in time to have their first service
u6 @. [; p: Ron Christmas Eve.
6 N7 y7 c) d ~T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
- n0 ?; J$ |6 d8 G Vpainting, etc, and on December 18
3 X; Y3 `# |5 F0 m0 Z6 Ewere ahead of schedule and just about finished.
+ H7 i. Y( ~8 Z7 b( f: kO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving * z# l! N: [) S! n- t
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. 1 n9 t9 _4 w: @2 S4 B
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.7 y. Q8 u8 _6 M" r
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had+ A5 H% y8 ]* k$ @- t& J3 A
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about
* U V1 P' l- ~( d+ M& x# m% P20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
+ [/ g8 O4 j C' r7 o% Y1 yof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, 1 D; i9 g4 c4 Z( @
beginning about head high.
3 W! H8 j5 ~0 p4 I! uT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
( N- z3 m! s1 M# m( Vand not knowing what else to do but postpone 8 r( ? Z0 J( Q2 Q7 o7 c
the Christmas Eve service, headed home. 3 L. W- t% H9 A/ S9 R
On the way he noticed that a local business was
2 y+ G8 Q- @. K3 Thaving a flea market type sale for charity, so he
9 c, i# ?; d* ]stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, * ~- h! g) Z2 j. p& {# y
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth 5 D+ }. L5 o* O) W" j
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
. F& r0 `% t+ }4 D! z" Xembroidered right in the center. It was just ( B- m# p5 Z( _0 m3 _: ^8 e
$ [3 d5 N" ~; K
# Z- `# o$ `6 m7 q4 e1 H$ c2 d" [
9 I& i9 j \- @1 ^. J+ o1 q$ N% A% l
' O1 r4 b7 | x; e- t4 _ 6 x9 F: Q! @; T9 {& B' N

the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. " _' e6 o9 f/ r
B y this time it had started to snow. An older ( ~! `4 q+ J# Y7 u' @3 H7 B. F3 |, a
woman running from the opposite direction was ) m" z- [! l% n1 P4 v; z' A @
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor ! S) a1 F4 A! ?
invited her to wait in the warm church for
1 Y& ?& q- X* a$ [: n: nthe next bus 45 minutes later. ; v( ]" a+ K: S' A6 q* X. V
/ J0 G7 R W) s; m u
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor ' Z' _2 |. |( r8 q0 S8 _
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put - ?' }0 |$ y2 L
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
6 \: u9 }# C a8 Y' Y f5 bcould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
# r6 Y5 e+ {9 a& WT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
8 Z" w+ A0 o- B& \% taisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"& F7 n/ y3 l+ q/ H+ }
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
) L, b5 T7 a8 C' m' kThe pastor explained. The woman asked him to check, i, ^- v5 W- ]' f
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into# J- m+ {# N2 E9 {! O& U
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had ' E# @, y; R: G; y+ P8 u
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . 2 b. \, E/ m( m# M! N) f' m
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor ; w, e2 r& B+ j. m1 f
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
$ g2 a2 J/ t ?' [0 c4 Swoman explained that before the war she and
3 V* ?( ^1 z* o: k0 ^9 ~$ z) K; o4 iher husband were well-to-do people in Austria . `, S+ G& m, [- W8 O& a4 T
' n1 {: d/ \% R O- `When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. , }/ t* g/ e5 t! x
Her husband was going to follow her the next week.
5 b( G" n/ a# r8 K9 W, c! g; oHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
: f/ y1 ^" T) g* m; Lhusband or her home again.
- J3 S# K) `2 d ^" j" nT he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
, e) U/ C: k- F; a# l) `) b# U9 i5 ^but she made the pastor keep it for the church., }; f& N i5 x. Q
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That2 m% r$ h. d7 j8 k# v
was the least he could do. She lived on the other
1 \, |6 }# S1 T# O: c. ]side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn 8 o1 u9 [4 P7 |4 W ]3 }
for the day for a housecleaning job.
. U- `) j) f- l6 ^+ b% lW hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas , @, ?- X( r# A+ h
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the 3 \$ p. L7 @) o; C; s+ f9 r
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the 4 W3 H5 w8 A/ F+ J1 @% Q0 K
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
. a3 g; h# X5 y$ G; |: ^* Rand many said that they would return..
* X3 z w( j: q. F! c2 E, i) uOne older man, whom the pastor recognized
( U1 F% \# O Sfrom the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
0 i& L7 e2 A# G" y( Y/ tpews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he 0 \. D0 q% H0 L
wasn't leaving. 6 R% \0 d3 E) R S. k
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on 4 M: \4 f; i" K2 e/ o ]
the front wall because it was identical to one
" k4 o8 S8 L8 w) q T6 S( Ithat his wife had made years ago when
+ U. b! a) c6 c. f L6 Tthey lived in Austria before the war and how , e& p& `2 _* Y/ n
could there be two tablecloths so much alike? S, q# c) u J8 z$ R, h# W& V
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he * h R7 Q9 F6 v5 p
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was 8 a; C. q% v% y" H
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and0 I. m7 |' a! q4 N
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home
* e9 ?& g4 }& `+ Z, }again all the 35 years between. 0 g* U' H. f7 h; H; y
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to 6 @ r9 _7 U# X+ N) n8 H& l% A2 n
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten ; C7 Q, v! A, @5 Y+ H1 g
Island and to the same house where the pastor
6 o% N5 z) I: ^* I, vhad taken the woman three days earlier.
. q( x: u8 P' k" c2 D+ j# w5 QHe helped the man climb the three flights of4 n" l4 k1 r H, o9 ?* m. s
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
" [# ]3 K- x& k+ x! m" {1 p! Othe door and he saw the greatest Christmas
' ~% r. k5 P; x8 B- n9 zreunion he could ever imagine.6 C9 ^9 {0 Z2 @4 h
