 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned 9 F. T/ Y0 E' r% [# `' ~% c f D
to their first ministry, to reopen a church
4 @5 x/ f* X- z( Din suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October ; z$ @4 w: O% r; T
excited about their opportunities. When they saw
; A8 }" R2 u2 W! C0 d' ^4 [! ktheir church, it was very run down and needed
) R* ~! i0 X4 Cmuch work. They set a goal to have everything + d3 `# r3 i J
done in time to have their first service ' G* K% c- N7 t
on Christmas Eve.
8 n6 _! ^' x) q8 h( W {) }* q9 KT hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
( l8 |# L$ z! X( }6 p3 @painting, etc, and on December 18 , b2 d& X& K1 p# a! u S+ ~
were ahead of schedule and just about finished. " G5 f; y% C# u1 n1 O/ [7 X6 y
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving 9 p% V# }: C3 V/ c7 S9 `/ v
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. - |" u2 P( N2 v. F. T0 Z% \1 [
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.1 h7 T1 f* v: V h6 Y3 X
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had
, z; q/ \+ ^1 a0 M( G) c! wleaked, causing a large area of plaster about 2 j* d# O2 s. s3 @
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
: h- R- V, ]& Lof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
# k$ n3 p% V# y) G) C; T5 Mbeginning about head high.
7 t9 {1 l: m1 Z: A/ i1 i, \& }. wT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
# ]6 J9 f z. |% Y9 u! m. Mand not knowing what else to do but postpone " F, X, K7 T+ |" L, o
the Christmas Eve service, headed home. . M) o* u0 _* ]: X
On the way he noticed that a local business was
( N, J, S ?( j9 r9 w: ahaving a flea market type sale for charity, so he
. l4 h/ g6 f1 M4 P2 q# h9 istopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, 8 e6 n4 `& B6 B, n/ o
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth 0 O. E9 c/ V6 r7 P b# E: a8 i$ @4 u
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross * t% N! P. Y0 D2 S& D9 j
embroidered right in the center. It was just % H" @. r0 C( z6 v2 c
6 x6 C) c. F, ^ @9 _" @
& Y0 g( u2 E% H% q0 z
' O& f" E: H' Y8 ?6 L& H: i& e
. A2 \8 `5 i: l c5 |& w
0 I9 C/ ?7 W( b- v4 c: Z
* }) G' C- f+ R6 Athe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
$ y1 n U7 p7 \' J sB y this time it had started to snow. An older g2 T! f$ ~6 ^' h
woman running from the opposite direction was " B8 d. y, f/ w
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
1 L0 t' P# o$ h4 \, ginvited her to wait in the warm church for : H7 [: w O; T' d" E: `2 u
the next bus 45 minutes later.
$ r; \" \6 F6 T5 z7 C8 ?& W3 L, c. f# ^( i' ?5 w) L
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor 6 X# j* z( P5 R; D( ]: ]
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
% B7 S8 D6 F8 W+ q( X, F1 Fup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
) E* u5 ^: d7 J& r' N# @! W5 D; Scould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
) V, n6 h4 M2 I- |+ l. V/ aT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
( c% W# b7 f# S) naisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"6 M) m' i6 X1 [# L
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
2 w+ I% g; O5 U2 Y# XThe pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
, A2 O4 ?. v* B3 hthe lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into$ M* x s% ?$ w3 n3 v* c" Z% N7 V
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
- `; h! K: R- Fmade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . - Q+ j' O* P8 s, p9 w# I
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
L2 x+ A: W' S6 S7 Atold how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The . N3 Y$ L- B. O, F" ]( r y8 s
woman explained that before the war she and . ~- c8 p- ]; b) Q. k$ W1 H* O" O
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria .

. ~6 k' F" }0 v% z7 @$ OWhen the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. # t: L' a D+ G- [- b9 O
Her husband was going to follow her the next week. 3 S9 v! B3 v# E5 G* {" g. {
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her 6 g4 Y- l/ @2 K8 S
husband or her home again. 4 j& c+ M# S' y9 g! j& s
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;" k- v4 t! w) y7 W
but she made the pastor keep it for the church. K- }0 V$ W ^2 U+ n
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That
* o4 c: S9 T. \* X& G! lwas the least he could do. She lived on the other5 P, l. A8 \% Z G4 a. V
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
2 N! j& F" e" }8 @8 d& i2 Pfor the day for a housecleaning job.
" x" c$ V5 z4 E- |W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas 4 U4 Y, {5 y* f! J
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the 3 d6 k! c* Z0 ]' C8 T
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the
" L' H% Y2 P& V; l* d% j9 Xpastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door 0 O! ^& X2 {$ d9 w" R0 M
and many said that they would return..
+ d9 L. S7 k. G! rOne older man, whom the pastor recognized " |& t9 |* ]$ p' g; L* P- _5 ]& C
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the " x( F4 o2 U$ h0 ~+ o9 r
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
+ q1 s9 T) \/ c, p9 J2 b8 s; Bwasn't leaving. 9 ]8 b c: z6 y9 Z! g; i- [
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on 5 O. Q8 B) O# t; o. A
the front wall because it was identical to one
* u. `7 C' b! \9 Fthat his wife had made years ago when x2 S o8 c: @; H
they lived in Austria before the war and how
2 |& c% m, w, l) o acould there be two tablecloths so much alike? 9 }$ X/ F5 L$ v# h: |4 x
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he 6 K: Z/ U" L' i" c8 A8 f
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was / z2 K( ?" | _6 M
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and$ i% S) V- f0 n. }8 b0 V# c
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home
- q2 l+ U4 a/ P( Dagain all the 35 years between. L8 |, a' ? {& D
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to 7 u# o1 ], T( c& {4 g
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten 2 J& A7 \/ u9 D: e# j: I: _
Island and to the same house where the pastor

He helped the man climb the three flights of; n) F% W) A! A
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on1 F: w0 m. b. o# R
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas
