The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned
" e! V9 W0 k# f+ h7 I2 B1 h4 Xto their first ministry, to reopen a church
- ?& Z6 z$ n2 M( z( B0 K; D) _* M; Ein suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October . }4 _0 ~$ b7 M0 Y' m% t# f% M# {
excited about their opportunities. When they saw
8 O+ m! G, P5 j$ H1 u+ l, L4 etheir church, it was very run down and needed ! m) V: k# \1 e$ ^9 K( O
much work. They set a goal to have everything
1 j2 U( a* ~$ |6 Ydone in time to have their first service 9 ]6 v, m4 S& t* {; m7 b& s
on Christmas Eve. # e; _# |6 K1 u2 q( b
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
4 }& {% E3 G+ S: Xpainting, etc, and on December 18
4 N, ^# g4 }7 gwere ahead of schedule and just about finished.
; [* E8 v3 N+ v5 Z4 NO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving * R: ~0 P, p" O- g
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
7 C5 ?4 X: w" N& i% Z O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.0 W2 [" _! B! T! ]- a& X# ~
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had
7 ^2 @, v# m$ a" C. ~2 rleaked, causing a large area of plaster about # ? U# G$ T Q+ _# @' t
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
# D- \* o- u$ F: p" Yof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, ( C) ]7 _" E& ~1 i: _2 g2 ~
beginning about head high.
6 Q) v- h1 a7 r2 J y6 B cT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, + U- K; ^) T9 B# w$ w2 y+ U
and not knowing what else to do but postpone
. J* @5 V6 P+ ~& b1 ?the Christmas Eve service, headed home. & `4 o9 q& Y# \. }" e# P5 I5 f
On the way he noticed that a local business was
J3 B. j9 R$ f1 y7 f: bhaving a flea market type sale for charity, so he
5 j# F" L" s0 D5 P8 `stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
) B5 A* y2 }% V3 |2 t/ Ghandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth # @7 z+ ^' O: q5 n: P7 u' d9 o% w8 m
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
: } r3 n; ]( A" `" Zembroidered right in the center. It was just

. A8 H1 t! E4 p4 I: f# Z: d. D* P5 V
3 i _7 S) J) B6 @9 x6 X% K; d% N2 ^8 e' R
" B# o: T; P; {! u- f+ B
% w9 @6 {( z) a9 j \9 Y# |9 Hthe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. : g7 s8 u) T- T; u. A
B y this time it had started to snow. An older + \! r3 ~( U4 @5 {
woman running from the opposite direction was
" {: s7 D+ W4 u+ O4 v; f& |' Ctrying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
4 e* c, B s6 Iinvited her to wait in the warm church for ! O) g2 g% x: o% S( f. ]
the next bus 45 minutes later. + K! Q7 W1 j9 V$ f

She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
3 f f6 y# ~; a. l$ t n3 a! Zwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
+ e6 k! o' }* Q. P* Zup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor ; z7 n5 s) q) C! }' Z2 v4 [4 H
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
: `9 h; t* d6 @, x- Q. |T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center2 E% f: G7 `$ Z8 Y
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
4 K0 U" a- e# o9 Kshe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" , z8 \" {+ u0 m- S* P9 K. c
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
( s" I' A+ o8 K' A$ M: t4 lthe lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into% N9 k7 }8 C7 \ d$ j$ n8 ]
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
/ _; Q, R! W4 G ymade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
! @% G2 c) D9 X1 }" TT he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor 9 P# q/ i; m. q3 R3 y4 _3 J) Y
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
( j/ G! L8 T- r! Gwoman explained that before the war she and
* X D* A1 U! G- Aher husband were well-to-do people in Austria . . n l. u( j) O: ]
+ b; k [3 H7 x1 rWhen the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
) z. `9 e: @# K: |7 D6 e/ lHer husband was going to follow her the next week. 0 D; Q0 z4 g3 ~8 y& F1 I# J1 ~$ ~0 F
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her . Z9 Y A8 b2 K. z- F$ ]5 }
husband or her home again. 7 ?# t9 H5 R* K1 A* }
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
% r. m) K. y9 v" L9 Q A- Wbut she made the pastor keep it for the church.
3 u ^/ S" b# v# UThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That% q- n, g- D3 F9 t. p
was the least he could do. She lived on the other
4 a, M- D |1 rside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn 6 C' s) }1 I* q" {0 _8 C6 W
for the day for a housecleaning job.
, g% F) ]+ |; l0 }) CW hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
# v, B& w A1 sEve. The church was almost full. The music and the
+ p7 @& h' n! j5 u( d* ]spirit were great. At the end of the service, the % L% i2 a6 Y! j6 i5 t* W
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
I5 Q) | p. L/ l+ }. ?% Land many said that they would return..

from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
9 T7 v- `5 ~3 \( W3 C, ^% Mpews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he 1 {: T. {& M0 }7 y P
wasn't leaving.
7 Y" u$ t" c/ }: ]5 I$ Z ]The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
4 X& T' J* e1 g! b5 u6 [' f+ }# _# Xthe front wall because it was identical to one 1 q/ j# b# n/ G; Z
that his wife had made years ago when
/ z2 Y* T/ _5 p1 Hthey lived in Austria before the war and how
6 K! f3 e w5 K. t) [# e: A/ icould there be two tablecloths so much alike?
; _3 l- i9 o' r. X8 k9 e) EH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he : N8 Z3 W' h9 j. e- D& D, [
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
$ T/ c- m2 l0 B$ D( a2 Vsupposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
/ \0 i" e% c, h4 Vput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home6 B" j: g" a q$ i' z
again all the 35 years between.
6 u4 h$ S7 |. C L1 @T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to * y+ ]; b' v/ y6 L; O
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
' A% U+ z( w, U: Q4 uIsland and to the same house where the pastor ( Q( D& M! `6 n* y* s8 g
had taken the woman three days earlier. $ J+ ~* ]" I. U9 `
He helped the man climb the three flights of d2 z* C7 u% h4 y4 h% F; h
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on3 E& ^& M+ g: A# x8 ~5 V% f
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas 9 P8 y- r u6 q+ l
