 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned 2 u% q1 c' t6 {! @. W
to their first ministry, to reopen a church ( Q: d8 j& i; y, W
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October 2 `" p9 v: l5 z( X
excited about their opportunities. When they saw
5 ^3 o4 T3 `. d! Ytheir church, it was very run down and needed
$ x& X- G2 ]2 q) g/ m1 v y6 Tmuch work. They set a goal to have everything
8 u; e3 P( r/ z: f0 D* ], i qdone in time to have their first service * v! @( W, N5 U2 ?, j
on Christmas Eve.
* O0 W; E" C) w: @! HT hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,7 `- a6 W! x6 P
painting, etc, and on December 18
3 t' |# O. [! v" O5 Ywere ahead of schedule and just about finished. 0 x) f6 ]- i( r6 x; G7 |
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
% K' T8 y- k4 o" S& N) i4 |2 Krainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
( w% w5 @" R$ c' [3 k O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.6 i/ c w/ R, p: Z
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had
1 M6 p% e. H( V7 n% m. k# i/ Aleaked, causing a large area of plaster about + P/ X9 A3 |8 B4 u+ I
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
" T8 h. }1 o" v9 t5 g. }: m+ eof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, & j, u- \/ F: @) y" a( \1 B; b$ Q
beginning about head high.
# U3 ~$ U# e' I. M& _; q" N2 HT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, # W) d% k3 w9 j
and not knowing what else to do but postpone & ~8 E0 y8 \6 F. n z
the Christmas Eve service, headed home.
. k/ M5 c, o! k# O) P& aOn the way he noticed that a local business was
l- q8 q6 d( Ehaving a flea market type sale for charity, so he . r4 z. a# V: O5 N9 A
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, + U+ P/ h6 m6 Y6 ^
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
. {5 J7 ^1 Z+ p3 Xwith exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross % B2 I/ x: R0 Q* d- ~. Y
embroidered right in the center. It was just ! H q9 p; }$ o/ Y. P) {# X1 ^
# T& E2 Y! r+ q: ?! s4 q6 `
0 p4 ]) `- K% n" Y/ U1 g7 u 8 n9 \) }" d% C6 [0 \/ D* w$ m
8 L. }* K* D5 B3 d. H. k" n; \2 X " [! D! F1 B% r" e! }! h) J0 b& A

the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
: |! W, m8 s1 X( H3 ~# rB y this time it had started to snow. An older 4 \* L+ L) z) M7 H, ^/ I+ T5 c& a
woman running from the opposite direction was
9 R/ ~9 I" O& x @: @6 E* t$ N' wtrying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor : n/ n- q+ ?' ~; F
invited her to wait in the warm church for
) s r% o8 H) Wthe next bus 45 minutes later. : @% D3 O; T' B e. ]9 H/ M! `- k4 B+ a
4 ~; ~) R# R/ L& nShe sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor C9 u: ]+ C0 k
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put : d( Z$ t1 I) K- t1 j
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
9 V) p+ {# E3 I/ L. C( A% Gcould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. z& {: c P- E
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
3 |+ r9 n4 m) J& E# Baisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
( {2 d$ _+ S* L( u! Y6 hshe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" 4 W+ I/ e! ^) o/ |* |
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check9 r) X* T: `, P1 ~$ d0 C
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into' q+ B2 I+ t1 K
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had % A3 l, {1 U3 ? a) ]) C: m0 k
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . ; ?" A& Z. \% v& D5 b" S
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor 0 o2 g( v4 j, I; n3 I
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The 0 @. q- J/ U8 k
woman explained that before the war she and
. g( e) [8 n; z( k3 j/ s! P# ]8 Fher husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
% K+ R4 F/ o; [, M, v6 M# m! \- D+ ~7 Z2 I' t# \: W7 Y6 S
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
4 L" r& K0 Q- d9 c: v6 h* E5 PHer husband was going to follow her the next week.
2 c' R: }; ?$ q3 |/ LHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
) ]+ m j% ^" L5 k. `% C3 zhusband or her home again.
6 E1 z4 v" L7 qT he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;5 T* H5 _. R+ D& f1 S
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.
% o* m3 {2 f# `: O' Q0 U; JThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That/ _! ?) { Y- W/ H/ ?* T" e& \0 Q
was the least he could do. She lived on the other
0 V$ S. m. ~, e. }4 Sside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
8 w* H! r, R. Z; c* `8 ~! Mfor the day for a housecleaning job. N9 t& M1 E4 b7 y/ l1 x! W, X. |
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas 3 E! ?5 v; o' j; F0 p
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the 6 v8 L& l I. K
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the
# A& U1 Q+ M7 Y6 U( r0 z- Mpastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
8 v/ W5 n' h1 Z" x8 W+ W$ Zand many said that they would return.. % o( W0 t7 s6 n$ H; T6 o4 c
One older man, whom the pastor recognized
6 M2 t. j) a1 S4 Ofrom the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
7 E. p$ z" u& d% d- O& ~1 _9 Upews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
9 i( C% Q( g0 I0 Vwasn't leaving. * ?$ |5 M4 c- {2 A1 A* k5 k
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on ( B! C3 `6 ?; y2 u+ K8 v% e
the front wall because it was identical to one . F! n k) ]& \* D: }: \
that his wife had made years ago when
% j: C9 z' B- K4 I- Ythey lived in Austria before the war and how . o0 P0 i! u7 E8 v7 P5 {! C/ f
could there be two tablecloths so much alike? $ S8 p& l f$ u) B
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
1 j/ z s, ~) g, Q3 Lforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
" f0 |6 G% h! D6 I: usupposed to follow her, but he was arrested and0 M- B1 B3 d- t
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home& x7 K P" b" p
again all the 35 years between.
" m. ]( `, c' H- p5 W5 K5 kT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
, w- X+ B. t2 G) Ltake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
" X( u/ f4 y- n) cIsland and to the same house where the pastor
8 G! X8 m$ T' f$ m0 l Y9 ~5 Vhad taken the woman three days earlier.
$ S0 ~$ \4 i1 j9 y9 F' IHe helped the man climb the three flights of/ r9 u" }! ^, B. s, H1 M
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
( m9 D0 m! { h x& l3 g/ f! nthe door and he saw the greatest Christmas |( `+ }- e, V- L e+ }& t( h
reunion he could ever imagine.
