 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason1 n- L/ m- o, g) b. A

( V; E2 Z3 k" b% |! [2 B The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned
9 \3 q1 K$ e8 gto their first ministry, to reopen a church % s e7 x6 }: C: t0 l7 L2 T
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October 1 r' X: N6 n- }4 h! w
excited about their opportunities. When they saw 2 t$ F1 Q/ O7 U! f1 @
their church, it was very run down and needed - h5 m' K# \4 w
much work. They set a goal to have everything 8 W/ R- X- p m2 F) x
done in time to have their first service S2 D& t6 y. B% n
on Christmas Eve.
. V$ m7 a1 l4 L# AT hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,5 s% p( N5 L w5 j
painting, etc, and on December 18 ; j) Z( A" B' I8 J" K0 f
were ahead of schedule and just about finished. ' |' m4 v5 U/ k4 ?
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
+ ]9 C# A& j" B8 n) h8 u" d/ v& zrainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
f( n3 z. [9 l9 n _ O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
! H0 U& T: e; k: H! P/ N. GHis heart sank when he saw that the roof had
" ^" l# u, J" ^ W: Hleaked, causing a large area of plaster about , w0 E% s f& k$ A+ l
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall , T* X; e6 d4 L* ^! N( W! u8 s2 C! H
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
- f G q$ ~( c7 {beginning about head high. + U. v, r* C* q0 l
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
& v7 t) o9 R0 `- U8 yand not knowing what else to do but postpone
6 X5 s3 B `1 }; o( ]! y- n( Jthe Christmas Eve service, headed home. , Q, N9 p' `3 \. R; s
On the way he noticed that a local business was 7 P/ M8 X6 ?3 E0 e
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he + E2 `: }" F; B. r4 u
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, ' e( P0 X( S+ w/ { ^
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
5 b, C# S$ l7 Bwith exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
( B7 I$ H- {3 a) @embroidered right in the center. It was just
4 P `: h1 W/ k- i1 v/ [ + v8 X: z* C. K" e4 @: Q

the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. " m) m, L5 u) D4 [) s/ [5 H
B y this time it had started to snow. An older @/ Z- a% p0 u# V7 _5 p# ], M5 H
woman running from the opposite direction was $ H' r1 ?" S" c9 j
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor , D) x9 ]+ m( j- R
invited her to wait in the warm church for 4 ~- r' x/ I1 `: {5 f& j
the next bus 45 minutes later. - [) C% Q( r, v

She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor $ {* Z: ?4 n8 ?) I* ^% ?
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
2 X7 m: J4 A& K# ~up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor : r7 W9 |) L. { G
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
0 [5 |3 k/ w2 D7 vT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center" {: \7 T) O! U/ K1 |
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
# B3 o- a% ~3 q1 F/ dshe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
5 G9 l" w& S* q' P+ p$ Q, pThe pastor explained. The woman asked him to check d; N) c; s: f1 R
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
3 Q s4 Z7 J! p4 n) ait there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
6 o" d! r2 f& O6 x+ G tmade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . 5 l2 f+ @& c$ Z* V" E& C; y% Y
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor & H# R8 \* H9 `3 |/ T
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The 2 v l; B, O5 A3 c4 @( i7 v7 K
woman explained that before the war she and
- u7 P# y! S( I! u- q; g1 S+ aher husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
: D' |5 c- Z8 L. x7 C+ l$ I$ M8 H0 a( p4 G8 l" h6 a
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
& k2 F1 y+ `+ m3 yHer husband was going to follow her the next week. # a G# A/ Y& S O0 o" _; C
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
3 g X0 `% [$ U3 v% b5 c% d0 V( \husband or her home again.
' P5 L6 ?" x, q- v* mT he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;4 G8 ]0 u3 _* I, P
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.
" I! q3 [6 C2 W mThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That
8 }9 w: U2 m6 r! w& bwas the least he could do. She lived on the other; \7 W8 t0 G' K. P/ b4 e
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn ' }! H6 }# R, K+ n# V
for the day for a housecleaning job.' h% p+ ~( R6 r8 q
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas , M, @% V+ d$ ?4 O+ z
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the
" \, z+ c% x+ u; _8 U% B: Fspirit were great. At the end of the service, the 5 A/ ]. L' [4 F$ v2 @- f6 {) m/ X
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
6 {5 l) s" J& t" S% U" p- I5 d9 \and many said that they would return.. : e1 t6 h0 ~& X& z
One older man, whom the pastor recognized % y+ z7 d2 z5 Z' r
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
3 L1 l0 n1 C; `" H1 z: H. ]4 \pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
0 h/ j" S& f& h# f g3 h/ } `: ?5 jwasn't leaving. * z2 Z% @7 I! q7 ?/ B
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on 5 x8 P S, l% g3 a
the front wall because it was identical to one
9 q& \, L. J/ n8 @! Sthat his wife had made years ago when 6 e) `8 q- G* K$ v/ }3 p! a, d1 i
they lived in Austria before the war and how 9 u* u' j* {4 P0 T$ `
could there be two tablecloths so much alike?
% y8 X3 w9 x& MH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
, P3 k3 B7 _2 H) q* fforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
2 t* x9 w* @7 y. b8 wsupposed to follow her, but he was arrested and* j: \; p) z$ Z1 y
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home* I4 L0 [% E8 n( B. \7 L4 [$ K
again all the 35 years between.
: g) p% s& V6 \+ O7 v3 iT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
% W B* X! q6 X5 ?. y4 ptake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
! C2 \! R8 j$ l4 p& NIsland and to the same house where the pastor
; m0 i9 e9 |$ o0 D* chad taken the woman three days earlier.
6 ]' V+ `2 \) o! R. rHe helped the man climb the three flights of% n I, L+ a- _. M4 s, R5 ~
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on+ R4 @" V7 e/ ~, ^# K; h
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas ( m3 O" O; I, Q- C; h8 ~
reunion he could ever imagine." B1 v2 n! R: _/ A* k
