The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned s/ [' ^2 ]. i( w! z- S+ M
to their first ministry, to reopen a church
$ {! R4 U( v: w& p Lin suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
* R: _* m1 I1 t1 B# bexcited about their opportunities. When they saw
3 M" U) t$ c) otheir church, it was very run down and needed % }( A, E! K9 T& A) |1 E6 N
much work. They set a goal to have everything 4 N. p( d4 M, y) O5 C
done in time to have their first service 7 r; N: y% d5 c
on Christmas Eve. # c2 P2 z2 g' w, S. O2 K' q( |4 q
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,6 _* C- Y- e: f o( f7 w" k: l
painting, etc, and on December 18 % U! |# d1 O% g2 e0 l
were ahead of schedule and just about finished.
5 v5 l# {& @- T# A+ h8 E- QO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
L% Z. u D6 p! A1 x. Q+ r, R, q, ~rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. ( Y% U) f, h; \. ~: K& B0 B' }
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
* I& Q; M3 z4 J7 t) n' I# ]+ O4 P- mHis heart sank when he saw that the roof had
, _( D+ `6 ]0 U( |4 fleaked, causing a large area of plaster about 6 Z3 V/ h1 z' y B* M
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
2 Y- v$ w8 M r$ ?8 jof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, : o; z n: s8 u6 V6 w
beginning about head high.
! b& A" U' r) R2 [; `- ?T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
& L/ x: U B+ F8 _7 tand not knowing what else to do but postpone , G/ x0 o [. N
the Christmas Eve service, headed home. , m1 \1 t' E0 Z! N8 `+ V5 F
On the way he noticed that a local business was
% W& X% T: d: y4 N; B: lhaving a flea market type sale for charity, so he
w- S2 A: Q* b. k% c; e' L1 O5 j- Tstopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, ! C3 Z" q/ W$ k" l+ y
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth ' P5 @. r( Q$ B' b: C
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross _# ?5 L2 f" A+ \2 l
embroidered right in the center. It was just 0 \! B0 P& e/ R: Y' Z, p5 b
$ n2 G$ t! L6 _8 m7 o1 z+ k8 q
: `/ r( s( L8 g$ Q ' E) u8 N7 g `: d; D2 j7 Y" y
1 w$ E# G7 [2 Q : A) y* o" {' j6 N3 q
3 F: z4 u2 S1 Q6 Vthe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. 5 \1 V# n: u+ {5 a2 C
B y this time it had started to snow. An older
9 O) b& D3 `5 q1 {woman running from the opposite direction was
% A6 G+ @: d Z6 ^$ n4 X9 ?6 _trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
% x6 ^* B! K9 ~$ J+ E3 K0 z% ainvited her to wait in the warm church for - }* Y. B* \. ~3 G
the next bus 45 minutes later. 3 q$ A B3 f4 M: N+ K5 D
+ A) A$ ^" Q- F# C2 R4 ^She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor + f$ ^8 I! S8 l1 e' k
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
& C) j1 J- x; l8 K- z0 k4 Qup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor " X, {* h5 ? C. G7 o* B
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. 6 U" e/ _+ k) y2 S. \; ]) W, ?
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
E: w8 Z5 T! _- Laisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"0 z0 t o4 W/ K3 @, t' _
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
1 F% J) [2 r9 b* A+ p7 N2 XThe pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
9 F* p) N- h9 y5 ~the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
/ v1 ]+ M+ s/ U; L' W+ sit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
/ c' U w# i8 a: S+ @! mmade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . ) S; W6 I8 T) `& c( Z I9 g: B
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
3 A# l& R6 d+ U1 ^3 Gtold how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
8 i9 Q& w# b6 c8 H Zwoman explained that before the war she and
/ H1 U' }: d: `6 x7 Bher husband were well-to-do people in Austria . 9 a1 S, M! b* r. O$ d; s
. E e) k3 f( l1 o+ X; mWhen the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
. r% ]6 S- q+ S f8 a8 }% S% i0 f7 p+ BHer husband was going to follow her the next week.
9 P) B0 w' j9 H) J6 _/ V* x0 B3 MHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
* }$ e- f. t9 n( _- {, J) J Ohusband or her home again.
5 c( d% z6 ~9 `. S" P- P3 hT he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
6 |9 `6 c# ^6 ~# |but she made the pastor keep it for the church.
8 f4 [- y9 s/ N* s7 XThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That! I+ U; i. K. C
was the least he could do. She lived on the other
7 N; V" B8 @9 D2 |7 d) fside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn 6 }" X1 W# h, P0 F% a/ F
for the day for a housecleaning job.' b: X1 ], n+ Y, V. a4 Y
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas : J0 _3 F# \! V1 z0 E
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the
- o4 [* V9 @, `, Y4 qspirit were great. At the end of the service, the
2 d- S. n7 ]' x) upastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door ! M0 t) w$ c7 }( c
and many said that they would return.. ; r, Y7 N; h4 G# @4 p
One older man, whom the pastor recognized * n& B h, h" ?& ~: T6 V7 Q
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the + n- `9 [4 K1 |% y& T& i) p0 d
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
) k: m8 ?8 S p9 Swasn't leaving.
% h( B+ O/ W" }/ T- JThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on 2 o) {- G( ?$ R0 c0 {
the front wall because it was identical to one
& t; L/ d* \* ]$ W* b: X8 ?/ u8 Xthat his wife had made years ago when ' F2 P* [" M$ q2 g% H9 P9 Q, {
they lived in Austria before the war and how
! a' y2 E( t# @& Hcould there be two tablecloths so much alike?
$ {& K( @# q. _- RH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
4 g& v, f6 w+ E }/ ~( n4 n* ^) Bforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
1 H% k5 F8 {$ u5 }supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
' Y7 T7 m, O! Z3 O: Jput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home/ I+ Q. r1 v7 k
again all the 35 years between. 0 t! G" Y- T) i4 S: T+ Y& G
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to ) R) f4 a' o0 l' F8 Y
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
5 I& t* a/ l" n) Z! s) LIsland and to the same house where the pastor / Q, Z, G' ?6 u' U% u
had taken the woman three days earlier. 5 U, I! B% e& a+ V5 J" R; P
He helped the man climb the three flights of
7 d% l/ q& D- X z Pstairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
' {0 @+ y* r3 R5 F% [0 Gthe door and he saw the greatest Christmas : o/ W# K& U2 Z2 U
reunion he could ever imagine.
