 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned
& i. Y# P0 M- Q* {, n8 Y4 B( r5 cto their first ministry, to reopen a church " V4 G* n- Q& [% }5 v
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
( O4 y4 R# I$ L. Z( k9 Jexcited about their opportunities. When they saw & e; P" r# W' B5 F6 j2 p! q
their church, it was very run down and needed
5 n) l3 ~3 j# _4 ?much work. They set a goal to have everything " X1 j+ h2 v" E" D2 G- r" \
done in time to have their first service
1 Y" L) q2 D/ b8 f( n" t( kon Christmas Eve. ) @0 u% R4 x; W2 a" ^! ^# |
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,! c, ]0 i @, `; I2 t3 ]
painting, etc, and on December 18
" C! K0 P) c: S3 Z4 Q9 mwere ahead of schedule and just about finished. + Y8 Y( d9 J1 U p8 s& A
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving 0 K" T; A4 w% o9 u/ G s
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
- b, Y8 M3 G, p" [2 b# w$ `- z O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
1 i; h2 n5 g* ~+ C! v6 P* iHis heart sank when he saw that the roof had
6 \( O- Q( K3 W2 Y6 U) j ?leaked, causing a large area of plaster about 7 q2 }5 T- U3 Y4 u8 d9 H6 d ~
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall {# I0 s+ L+ i# W
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, * \, ~* F' O N" Y8 a% @
beginning about head high.
3 F- p$ p& d+ E+ m9 u3 T" cT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, % A+ M1 s% v" o% n3 L" l4 B
and not knowing what else to do but postpone : |8 L, v! D9 X7 x
the Christmas Eve service, headed home.
: B( f0 G" d+ t+ E8 S+ jOn the way he noticed that a local business was : z0 y, c8 f3 ?3 ^5 s8 p
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he
2 X6 n$ w9 n8 v0 z, }+ kstopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, ( U7 g3 J; `8 a- r; i/ H
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth + l' T5 j: r3 k
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross 5 X# r0 c9 Y9 a- g" ]
embroidered right in the center. It was just

! {$ W. Z" Y! B7 ] i* {

7 M# ]% b$ @# i$ @% \" f
v+ r1 |+ F3 `9 _1 X6 W* qthe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. 6 ]& K( |3 p: A o5 W% m
B y this time it had started to snow. An older C: Z8 ^# d! a5 q" e: X
woman running from the opposite direction was
' y1 S) |8 I! ?9 n; t8 ftrying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor : B1 q" a& W" d! @
invited her to wait in the warm church for 8 L0 O, L' o& I6 x' N
the next bus 45 minutes later.

She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor 1 Y/ C+ u' Z. r
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
% i2 |5 Q! v8 ^4 y- s" d0 {* T! n5 Kup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor 4 g" B1 K' m. X. C8 c, b; c; W
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. ) M. m( e3 @1 e- P7 P0 P6 S
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center2 G/ M! `1 c' C8 N6 n1 h) x
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
3 j4 q) A$ {+ s2 w4 d. b0 dshe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" 8 ^* F+ g! v) Z+ l6 X* i; \
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
$ k# N9 ~) [% A5 Rthe lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into: k# A6 R+ w* b9 w4 n
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
/ R4 O3 W/ k. H/ Q9 amade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . + V& h8 v/ W( p( H% d* a
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor 0 j, s7 G0 r; n4 h7 u5 D) w
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The ) W1 ~8 \ N) ], x1 E
woman explained that before the war she and
& J9 I$ ?$ _$ K' k* Nher husband were well-to-do people in Austria .

2 m I. s1 j9 K7 nWhen the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
; o) X% ]: Z8 @: [- r, J. A% OHer husband was going to follow her the next week. " X5 D) U9 q$ c$ H
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
' G3 _: R' X; p& U- i$ `5 K& T5 ~husband or her home again.
; S3 m t* h, U DT he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;/ f( d- X$ L# r0 i% j. O
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.
; X* R# C) M7 p- S! k$ hThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That" h& V& P4 d1 `& ]9 f
was the least he could do. She lived on the other
1 h7 m5 K3 A9 {' ~6 u* fside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
# F/ V4 \. ^5 n5 I- b3 v6 Bfor the day for a housecleaning job.
5 g% u; [% Q, }7 o( p5 aW hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas 6 _: a1 t3 k" L b4 \
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the / X! H' G' c: b1 G6 P+ A
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the # ^% a, x5 ?. p
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door p) j- _1 F2 J. a. Z5 T& Y
and many said that they would return..
3 D( h, H( v1 ]: I0 pOne older man, whom the pastor recognized ( X3 }* u3 G& ], ~0 v; K! j
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the ( F5 m# g" G8 f6 b' k6 W. M0 F
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he , f% i! w8 \; e# N
wasn't leaving.
5 O* i' ^/ H# p3 O7 S0 Z+ [The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on 1 m# W* w5 v2 d; {
the front wall because it was identical to one
7 e) x6 m2 B1 z2 X" D; ethat his wife had made years ago when
) T! w, P7 N+ y" s0 l" fthey lived in Austria before the war and how
. w* J \/ J. T% r$ T$ ?could there be two tablecloths so much alike? ' {8 {/ F, a( o8 S0 `% u
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
3 b! t4 a. U6 @ J' l [forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was - [. E6 h# u/ L8 B; x3 ?+ W# W
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and* l- s5 b" R. o4 j6 [" w- B
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home
6 f' d/ ~, O1 {, H0 T0 f; o% L gagain all the 35 years between.
1 q8 a5 I) ]# k' I5 sT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
5 m, S# o: n6 z' s4 c+ u6 ntake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten . O- S- g* @7 D! [% m! P3 @' K
Island and to the same house where the pastor 9 z' `* b6 C6 R' c# n# F
had taken the woman three days earlier. ' u$ [3 N" v+ w! p0 Q, ]; q& z
He helped the man climb the three flights of' D+ ?: Q7 i p/ Q1 C
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
: b6 R% J7 a/ ^( E8 s6 |& s7 n8 }the door and he saw the greatest Christmas 3 v6 Y" R1 Z9 V2 ^! i. r; T! C
reunion he could ever imagine., P& A: f9 ~( W/ m
