 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

( i& H% `- B I The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned
/ E9 \: @& R; J& |# d, sto their first ministry, to reopen a church - z9 |+ p6 C* D" `6 F2 ^
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October ) _8 @9 F9 G1 v( \$ K
excited about their opportunities. When they saw
: b: A9 R( g& |7 T# ltheir church, it was very run down and needed . a2 p& f* M$ ]( _5 Y7 X( j4 V3 {
much work. They set a goal to have everything " H* k. ~ ^! }$ m# f* H
done in time to have their first service 6 ]& ]5 K# k0 G7 x- R% b
on Christmas Eve.
, |% S/ q: D1 H1 ^T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,( S$ `, \, D9 q" a" p+ ?+ t
painting, etc, and on December 18
# _! m9 M! n# Q4 N( e: L6 ?: ?were ahead of schedule and just about finished. ' p9 U) N9 h3 K" W: ~* l
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
; H! d# s2 M- p# crainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
8 G7 H( H5 k4 U5 W+ e4 U O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church., b3 ~+ l# f" q- _
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had9 C9 t3 n0 d2 c& O7 M" J5 S& u# N
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about
3 c2 \6 Q. p* ]5 Q# |20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall + R% B8 k( P4 T3 A5 ?
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, 0 g$ o" H e5 L" l
beginning about head high. ( [0 H2 b& j) _3 k8 ]8 b0 G
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
2 [$ f4 ~, K3 Fand not knowing what else to do but postpone
6 O: B! l& b; O. ?$ `% j6 f5 othe Christmas Eve service, headed home.
/ A0 c7 F3 ] B- uOn the way he noticed that a local business was 6 A3 D2 b! |" A0 P! m
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he
0 V2 e2 _3 S# qstopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, ( k9 n: @) x* m& d7 i
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth ' f' h& D2 C6 Q. ]& ?( z
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross ' ^# L; q G# Z& F0 d4 l- s
embroidered right in the center. It was just

, p4 R G$ p' q' C; [: K- D
4 i5 M- c- x0 _ ! N* J2 B$ n% u6 j9 H0 N
; c& {2 t: s7 ]/ }9 w" h 6 V \$ H& M6 e
1 r5 }0 ^) p4 D& j# ethe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. ( x4 _ D' I" i% C2 p0 L, |' e- N
B y this time it had started to snow. An older
Q% j" e4 ]/ O$ j! F: _woman running from the opposite direction was
7 K9 a: R2 b6 }7 z5 ltrying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor ( c) _4 O. w: I N
invited her to wait in the warm church for ' U8 a# R+ M$ ? d5 v
the next bus 45 minutes later.

9 E; I8 T5 L9 l7 d$ _1 u l: w; qShe sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor + K, Y$ n; u6 ~% i5 n. f
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
0 c/ S) O; \ ^" n1 zup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
8 R3 ^- _$ s1 k4 Pcould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
3 q' U% J5 Z2 q1 M6 ?- |2 o6 e9 nT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
4 ~, u1 u( w5 W; t5 D& B9 ^aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
/ m! Q, z, d$ K+ k" |she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" 1 W- f" h) }7 N
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
- Y& P4 }8 `- c9 F9 Wthe lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into: k4 a$ q! r% C5 d7 W6 S) _
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had 4 F1 G* i4 F, {! q: h, K
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
7 F/ y2 Y# X$ g" z3 V' PT he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
, g# V' Q: `; t8 F0 g9 L# ztold how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
0 r. X/ Q( `) N1 U1 vwoman explained that before the war she and : U9 u( S+ Q) t! y% F
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria . ! x# p2 x4 W8 i% C- [) ~2 S
I0 j% o) w, y5 iWhen the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. / B: G- j/ i& I7 ^8 h' w" e
Her husband was going to follow her the next week. 1 i7 J# F3 s. P# B
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
. v( o- @; b% d& Y4 A5 [- ?husband or her home again. $ ~, y# f: C* q5 y, g, A
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;' M8 Y; j# _$ U1 `/ B& f v
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.( H. O' } `4 H0 U
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That4 C! m0 _$ O$ g$ B
was the least he could do. She lived on the other
- b/ ~0 k& z; R0 l2 V' @& ]6 wside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn - M; [7 }2 f# g$ F+ r$ U
for the day for a housecleaning job.6 d: Y3 A. z, |! p, J' X+ g
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
) u: k# Q! q I# z4 w8 CEve. The church was almost full. The music and the 8 a% l+ r; T1 Z/ Y7 s8 Z
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the + B8 c1 {) C" U
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door " M- E: N/ t0 I6 S v1 b
and many said that they would return.. 9 \7 J. U3 }5 @8 q( s
One older man, whom the pastor recognized + D4 p9 _; O" k" i$ t
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the # C3 j% ?7 |* @- X' y4 `
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
6 v8 T' H; Q$ {% _# o* }wasn't leaving. , Q X4 X+ S# b) k0 W0 ^8 Q* U
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on 1 h$ G, y: a7 `) N
the front wall because it was identical to one
6 B7 I7 Y3 U" f1 F. gthat his wife had made years ago when , [3 ]; a, a: T
they lived in Austria before the war and how
& w& {$ {/ W4 _could there be two tablecloths so much alike? & o; U; T5 S v6 ?
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he . k* A3 e8 }4 I7 J2 f& D+ w
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was ' C5 S( S9 Z+ @/ h
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and6 I0 ]% {/ ]' f$ N2 l# z. T
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home/ z; b2 K" N; [) r6 L
again all the 35 years between. $ ]7 {0 G4 M; E- P# V, G2 c: t
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to # a& e K: `0 ]0 i
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten ) o2 v, R' e! e# N7 S
Island and to the same house where the pastor * }, n/ g \; d* X7 [0 R
had taken the woman three days earlier. 4 I# X0 e* t6 m0 u% m/ Q& E
He helped the man climb the three flights of
+ A2 S# j0 F% v3 Zstairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on+ g9 d* B* X0 G* u6 S& u, v8 O6 t: r
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas
