 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned
6 ?9 K5 n5 |: }. Vto their first ministry, to reopen a church
; X3 \6 K0 n2 f3 e, Pin suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
, e, O. s0 b# T0 Y7 s* a9 aexcited about their opportunities. When they saw 5 D8 F- L( \4 L; _3 C# r( y0 \
their church, it was very run down and needed " [" K, K! [# w; M
much work. They set a goal to have everything % F+ Z2 d1 \( u* a: Y
done in time to have their first service 4 T" v+ C2 X# q) N6 |5 ~
on Christmas Eve.
/ t# B, \4 s$ o, A2 ]T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,' O) s+ r/ Z2 ?: v
painting, etc, and on December 18 + W% T4 H) o" y; Q# u6 X! z5 W; @7 D
were ahead of schedule and just about finished.
2 E, C4 a# g) |O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving , E/ {' F U: i, Q w( ^# f
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
! e( E+ ~- [+ K3 ?9 e8 K; X j: d O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.9 u: }, J$ t$ B, }5 X
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had
! G: S: b6 d5 R8 h8 }6 I* _& o6 |3 C) Y' Aleaked, causing a large area of plaster about % ?- f, V- s2 |8 i- F T5 A8 @% ~
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
8 D/ ~9 }3 M6 l. ^of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
+ w& E: R$ [+ Z$ V. D- E2 J2 f0 abeginning about head high. 9 G" I# c# n, M
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
7 d7 ?& G' k. t G6 ]. h$ L5 f- uand not knowing what else to do but postpone " R2 d+ u/ Z) |! R' K( m
the Christmas Eve service, headed home. * w5 w4 L j0 M' e
On the way he noticed that a local business was " e0 s: V* T( F! T' [
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he ) Z/ Y$ A3 ^# ^% k3 q' q4 ~7 h8 n
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, 8 h! \1 z( W9 Y9 q+ U9 S7 K
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
- h+ g1 [/ T) t jwith exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
+ r; O& g$ `' _7 |3 }embroidered right in the center. It was just , f: @% _/ d$ q$ A7 w
$ z- x: D; v. [: s3 b3 @! R4 A& Z) u4 Y v2 t1 e
0 l9 C/ o. `+ S4 M' K+ Z9 v2 L- W) g6 o0 ?& U: c
% G( }* w# N0 E; P
5 h8 }3 K4 T# ]the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. % m" Z2 Q' }0 g9 V' e- O0 x' S
B y this time it had started to snow. An older / `5 S }; d% G ^1 R% D
woman running from the opposite direction was ) B8 {1 Q1 V' h' G; I6 j2 L
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor $ K( k G$ W# t/ Y% }3 q! x
invited her to wait in the warm church for
E' ]0 f4 @" s* s( Vthe next bus 45 minutes later.
2 Y3 K( F8 X& C( S) P3 [3 u9 ^0 I3 a: P! ?: p
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor * v+ m, g3 w! x i& z
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
% E# ~) d4 e- o5 L/ v7 M' sup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
% N3 }6 |0 ^! T2 H ^5 k# O+ g2 xcould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. ( ]# J ^/ C/ l' E4 g
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center0 N; q1 B6 F! ]
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
" K3 D7 Y6 i/ i, V W1 Mshe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" 1 o1 r/ O. W6 F" I
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check2 X' }. T2 k- M5 x) R* x
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
; x( R# E& |2 s1 ]: a2 ait there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had ; L6 v8 j" X; Z& ~/ g/ I
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . & H7 G& v2 N% R7 N
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
3 N7 J$ d/ @& { `7 Mtold how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The . F6 ]5 E9 {% n' a
woman explained that before the war she and ( `7 g3 o8 [. c* H9 e7 a2 M J
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
, u0 H) ?7 w: q! Q9 o% Q; S. r1 G/ a
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. 7 X- P* v0 f5 h% \$ W
Her husband was going to follow her the next week.
- G% H: V1 Y& b0 b& p8 }He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her + j- a$ U9 y2 N, Q& r; Q
husband or her home again. 4 h/ B8 ^) d& R; v; J
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;) K% K y; g3 k2 N" y2 {0 M
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.
/ \3 b6 u. \9 [* H5 ^6 aThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That& C$ v- U' \1 ]; P' |. p8 |
was the least he could do. She lived on the other, {- }2 Z5 ~" B
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
& N2 K* F$ N3 W+ _5 e, O8 Ofor the day for a housecleaning job.
4 d4 u9 y% K$ g6 B! oW hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
; `. c; B' g+ B, Y1 o. h8 v/ IEve. The church was almost full. The music and the $ ]9 h& Y5 S1 ` W, n8 h
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the
' E3 ]4 m: }" W0 E9 K# spastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door 5 g+ E9 |" h5 k
and many said that they would return..
, s. E0 \6 f3 [+ MOne older man, whom the pastor recognized 6 D" ^. D( P* l
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
: n }( ?1 T0 u, e+ }pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he # t5 O5 f4 q0 G- d* w3 D
wasn't leaving. 2 C. Y6 A2 I9 ~ v1 }" R" o5 s
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on / ?+ A* _8 O3 y6 h
the front wall because it was identical to one
0 f: _& ]( z+ `that his wife had made years ago when
: G) w7 [; Q. h- D9 q" w) G, Wthey lived in Austria before the war and how
8 a& H* T. f4 |could there be two tablecloths so much alike?
, q" I) \9 O. D3 JH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he % p1 l) `( G1 A0 f
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was ' X: ]' Z# E8 j5 L
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and' B& J) c2 n7 O, o. V4 M) F
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home$ v3 _) b# ]9 P
again all the 35 years between.
! r- I/ K: H: K3 @: C: X2 h; rT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to & |" y9 E+ U" {8 s! p+ b
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten : ?* d5 w) l4 N& `* j: Z* L% w
Island and to the same house where the pastor
$ p% c- i; [9 ?+ n( }' a% d8 C+ Z3 Fhad taken the woman three days earlier.
$ S _' e; ` L8 ?He helped the man climb the three flights of. K0 i6 O# \$ u( W9 q4 ~
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
- W% P+ X( V6 s( D; Kthe door and he saw the greatest Christmas , m3 R6 J2 c3 x; k4 U- f2 ]
reunion he could ever imagine.
