 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

+ @5 m' q" |% C! }% w( H The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned
! n8 d" ^5 P2 x8 U2 t4 A& tto their first ministry, to reopen a church
d: s7 q7 ]6 M p) `in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
1 d" V! G' N+ A W9 F5 N: Iexcited about their opportunities. When they saw & I2 O7 S% v, O% Y- e( x
their church, it was very run down and needed
' }1 h9 c9 d0 z# emuch work. They set a goal to have everything 4 \; S6 B9 V- I" g' e5 T
done in time to have their first service $ F" u+ d8 H0 c/ M3 x. J, A$ L
on Christmas Eve.
. w" V- Z6 c: ]3 @T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
! j, O/ [6 a; A! Y' W$ C; Kpainting, etc, and on December 18
3 C& h3 P- u+ Z; Z) Wwere ahead of schedule and just about finished.
+ `; ]( }6 T$ E9 fO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
; I% E6 Y5 P7 ^1 vrainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. * U# P; E# ]9 ~' ~. N8 Z; p2 G
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.# f- U7 e% ` \
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had, a. J G6 V# _
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about 6 c' G% Q6 u/ u% j# |
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
2 |4 P7 Y6 a& T5 s: L" uof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
3 I6 ~% M _ X& F7 [; ~beginning about head high. , u+ W7 B4 U y; @
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
1 n# s( l% D) Y; S3 |) d: Wand not knowing what else to do but postpone
) F( N/ p9 F6 ]3 r# wthe Christmas Eve service, headed home. $ a H6 H r4 S6 c; a x$ i3 `
On the way he noticed that a local business was
7 e+ I- i( l7 [0 l) ^$ ehaving a flea market type sale for charity, so he , y0 M* {& h) F ^1 n/ l- ?
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
$ c7 e0 E$ n9 b" Ehandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
. r4 W$ n8 i, p+ g( }) J/ Wwith exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross # ?' a* @, ~+ x6 n: ?/ X& ~1 D
embroidered right in the center. It was just 6 v0 }$ D! z% u3 a
( u: M' }/ x2 z7 S* e. P+ q* [& \% R1 Y. j
; B {1 g4 K) {/ }
" C7 e3 s- E, y
& s, }/ ~: k: R- n) V+ U7 [* Y( }
the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. 3 k/ z6 y; B% Q& I$ m0 p- ?9 V
B y this time it had started to snow. An older ; r6 z" s0 ?, ?2 e* N4 O
woman running from the opposite direction was
8 B9 P! {& B* a8 Otrying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
/ C! \; t1 x8 t5 \; _' Kinvited her to wait in the warm church for 1 i8 M& Q& |: d
the next bus 45 minutes later. - Q/ v( n, s+ {' ?2 ?
: r( g- `; \; j* [She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor & s3 B; q/ l0 N/ ?- s
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put " F# T [$ g6 S/ M( G/ l0 M
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor 6 S: w7 c! ?4 m3 M- e
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. s0 E: B! b* h5 W
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
$ `) S& T& _% Z' N- C* f& Waisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"9 {" e. K9 k' x
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" ! C) w- \/ q P" n3 ^7 g
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check+ U9 a* l2 Q% {- J% R) N
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into, k! u0 M8 o# R) u* _
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had . F2 Q3 f( T8 V8 E; e% Z' S
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . 6 r* u1 P- ~: Z5 x8 k* J
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor % D$ o U& w. t; e& _; X7 x
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
- t: ?9 V" ]1 Q9 G' Awoman explained that before the war she and $ ]. j4 [* h1 G( R; i% b
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria . ; _: Z& @7 n6 J# T" }3 L
" _+ ~& K8 @; B' xWhen the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. $ Y& t; N$ w6 e0 i& E
Her husband was going to follow her the next week.
+ J+ b- D- e/ R4 ]He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
* p" W& s9 z0 s* Xhusband or her home again.
: |/ c" ?3 O, g( a4 n6 AT he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;4 d# P9 {4 O4 M* B- i5 @: G* h
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.) ]" q$ q. R5 [' v$ v" ~
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That. O8 e6 B2 n9 Z1 ]2 h
was the least he could do. She lived on the other
0 F" s4 u/ ?8 q, xside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
9 X, ~$ o: C3 cfor the day for a housecleaning job.
^1 `1 V( e8 B$ x# \# F! |W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas " \- e6 @4 q# @% d+ s6 {
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the
" ]: ~, _5 @( Y! K' a" @, H1 L3 Sspirit were great. At the end of the service, the ' {* D1 C5 S: v' u2 U7 \- C
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door $ E8 ]% ^4 q: f2 n4 E0 E" ]& O
and many said that they would return.. ) {5 k: K$ v$ `9 v' |8 U& B
One older man, whom the pastor recognized
. w( S8 ]% M5 p1 b- ~9 z6 R7 ?5 ]4 _from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the : I0 J- G, ]$ c/ h7 P
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he 7 t9 l$ d5 @9 X
wasn't leaving. ! D4 n6 ?6 R5 x, g9 u( s% m1 U8 a
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
: u! S: }3 u. r" T& L. t8 O* Athe front wall because it was identical to one ; c. Z- z, M: b2 w* K p3 t) m
that his wife had made years ago when
& s- Q# ?: [! N, }- j0 b- Gthey lived in Austria before the war and how
2 u' F( ~9 D' m8 \. x! J" gcould there be two tablecloths so much alike? & }/ f5 S- P: `- k! [5 V
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he - z" }8 y2 H5 h! T/ p2 o
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was k. f9 a. r* f
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and" @8 |' {. [* g4 r% H
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home) O/ Y; d1 v' t* B- W
again all the 35 years between. : m$ T% D3 u% m) f! k% K
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to 2 n) U0 k1 p" J' u" {; R2 v
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
0 Y9 j! B# K. I2 v3 e+ h+ GIsland and to the same house where the pastor
4 o3 n$ h; N# G1 b4 y( x6 F% Ihad taken the woman three days earlier.
9 ]2 v2 z0 E5 \: ]' ^He helped the man climb the three flights of
: z: |+ H8 [! {" Kstairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
+ H: x1 {3 o+ Nthe door and he saw the greatest Christmas / N& C- M* t) v2 {5 m, C+ {
reunion he could ever imagine.
