% p& ^7 Y' M& O( B" d) m- D The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned
3 l0 z* y; Z6 ^+ L7 _to their first ministry, to reopen a church
2 B5 z% ~5 s: v) Y- o. ]8 nin suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October * t8 k- f. l# k% E4 |" J0 M6 B
excited about their opportunities. When they saw
# a3 s5 o7 x( gtheir church, it was very run down and needed
8 k4 r- j4 d: v+ h. P* Bmuch work. They set a goal to have everything
2 v5 G7 Y8 Z3 u# g0 q/ Edone in time to have their first service
) ]* F9 m. B8 j. c0 Von Christmas Eve. 5 z7 b. s# |/ E( j
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,9 o/ ?4 j, j9 l5 T, n. T$ [$ ?
painting, etc, and on December 18 3 Q* G& e3 N! R5 v1 T, D
were ahead of schedule and just about finished.
; y4 J) g$ w1 n6 L9 aO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving 6 x8 H7 s) T; t3 J7 s' e
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. 5 f8 I/ N4 s1 v9 m
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.3 j* Z* C; j9 c* \+ g3 M
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had
- t9 O0 d& W! V: v( Q4 ~leaked, causing a large area of plaster about
6 M: X! v7 I/ D+ f& J/ @* _/ e9 A' O20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
3 w- Q! q, S8 e1 k8 i# s" K) ~of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, 0 M! v& b2 p ~! M
beginning about head high. 8 q1 z. O, m3 }0 k
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
) c' s' H2 e" H% A5 Cand not knowing what else to do but postpone
7 c# s ?" `. m/ Ythe Christmas Eve service, headed home. ) a4 o! d4 j+ K0 u, g
On the way he noticed that a local business was ) l' ?0 Z a6 L+ [8 Z2 E! m
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he
; n0 m1 t& P) Q( Qstopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
6 Z5 ^4 j5 }) c" u' p1 lhandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth 5 }$ e+ J. n; `% {
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross 7 s' U4 `" z* u0 m. A7 |( b/ C
embroidered right in the center. It was just

' u7 h/ w( n3 y) g, O0 e+ t! J4 B+ R" r$ W! m; p2 {2 F+ B
8 g: z5 F* S( L, Q4 p- `' |* u0 N6 V8 ?3 ~4 F
( f! ^$ i# T# L f9 v1 F( \8 M
C, l" O5 ?# dthe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. " i# x& s; j3 p9 ~
B y this time it had started to snow. An older % r; D: J$ @6 b4 N' r# }! T
woman running from the opposite direction was 6 w# g, R" d; n0 O# \
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor ! h) g+ B4 @. o) d( u
invited her to wait in the warm church for * F9 E( T1 V, R% Z
the next bus 45 minutes later. 2 t c) r5 Q( T; f3 b; k+ \
9 [/ x4 P7 V7 C9 @+ U& `. a3 G0 gShe sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
2 P n1 J5 m/ j5 f' q' i6 Kwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put # M+ u& y' u( b ?! G
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
4 n1 w& n& B; d2 Dcould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
4 {* n9 |' o5 n1 i3 `% C6 R6 Q- O) ZT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center3 W4 J7 p. ? J+ Y! x
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
4 [0 c2 W$ M' o& f, C9 nshe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
2 Z; p/ }- o: I: |7 k C. s* i8 FThe pastor explained. The woman asked him to check' ^$ g2 e& J( k& X0 w2 A
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
5 d+ c' j! c2 s9 h2 p$ v9 Xit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
! G" g b1 D% O5 Umade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
, ?8 t: O3 C/ x8 lT he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor # @; E. D r; ]* G8 o0 u
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The * n1 |" q" I! n" C* S. ^8 G' o" I5 H
woman explained that before the war she and . K& r8 F0 g& a; z1 X( A0 b- w" q, X
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria . ; N- R, b, R$ Z9 }- P2 C
1 U! {9 x7 L3 Q. ]3 r0 F
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
3 ?+ n# m6 K. {! }4 _) ~Her husband was going to follow her the next week.
. a$ s# a `4 N! UHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her 5 [+ J: g( M E0 L) N8 g
husband or her home again.
/ ]) S& S; ]. Z. Q) ~T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;3 E: U* Y! e7 N9 @& k$ e
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.0 T& \& O, O8 T8 R/ l& _$ m
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That. `. ^8 N( L9 q3 B
was the least he could do. She lived on the other. v) _# @7 \' g4 p/ d
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn ; f* O0 e! \& H/ x5 _: p
for the day for a housecleaning job.

Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the
( [- C7 k7 r! ^! l/ E jspirit were great. At the end of the service, the " |: A: U' L9 f* S: k! t2 C" p; ~5 L
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
: N8 R' r+ h& N; T6 ]' W7 W! band many said that they would return..
! [0 H6 M8 l& o5 y& EOne older man, whom the pastor recognized
7 _, C- W6 g& f6 S1 \5 b5 k8 bfrom the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
" g9 I* d2 d+ K) j* {pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
& q* W, M j" X4 S4 w; W- o2 Z4 Gwasn't leaving. 9 ^# E1 |) _- H' \: @- a" z. k
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on ) |3 G7 I; ?+ c' u6 c2 `5 ?# B* T
the front wall because it was identical to one
! h+ _' z, e4 F2 _$ d; l T sthat his wife had made years ago when ) M! D+ B+ Y2 `; ~
they lived in Austria before the war and how 9 j. E7 J6 h9 d2 w, E
could there be two tablecloths so much alike?
4 B2 P- o! g% f# h5 J* K$ LH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
; i3 b5 F q. s- |+ q' Jforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
0 N# ]: M& i9 ^! wsupposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
" ~. I, [8 y n/ o* S2 }put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home
( o" u# [+ ]9 O! jagain all the 35 years between.
, k( O( `- Z, O1 t* e+ `# @# Y( sT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to # P3 P5 @& }$ Z& _9 H! u
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten 3 i7 c U. ~' Y7 ?/ `
Island and to the same house where the pastor
/ U1 w- b; Y+ t* Phad taken the woman three days earlier. % v, M8 @) Q. A- i5 x
He helped the man climb the three flights of
/ F+ {9 C; z# b: G! Jstairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on6 T$ d8 B5 O& L1 E% }2 W
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas 8 W& O& o4 j2 H) H6 u- e% i
reunion he could ever imagine.& c: u& c/ r9 G" x9 C% S
