8 _6 A5 w( n6 V, n% q1 l( m5 bto their first ministry, to reopen a church
1 y3 i. _* O" H8 `* Q, Qin suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
' ]/ n1 D+ ~3 L; zexcited about their opportunities. When they saw # F0 Z8 w, K1 G5 o, J l. T
their church, it was very run down and needed
+ S9 }1 c, K( J+ p @: Ymuch work. They set a goal to have everything
$ @! {6 U v/ l5 h7 ^, udone in time to have their first service 9 a6 z6 o x3 ^) D# W
on Christmas Eve.
" X5 @1 K2 A! v6 X% c5 I# S' \" zT hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
0 E# }" \) x$ e* {) j( k2 ~painting, etc, and on December 18
. i2 {9 U k; a; W0 y) fwere ahead of schedule and just about finished. 8 d$ a: D8 m9 r, {* u
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving ) m' {0 K; {3 j* _- L
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
) k) g8 `/ U* h4 r, t% o. `6 Q0 l" R& R8 o O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
& |2 }& n, c5 N- H( cHis heart sank when he saw that the roof had. n+ P; @: c5 U4 n0 p( M1 Q
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about $ \4 e6 J# d" U2 r
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall 5 l8 b+ T1 T* |7 C
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
! W! K* e$ j9 L: _: X j# hbeginning about head high.
7 i% }: q( l/ dT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
. R0 G, _6 i4 \3 d0 {# t, Y i1 c4 cand not knowing what else to do but postpone ?& t/ Z( }5 e$ ?" E) @" K
the Christmas Eve service, headed home. - a- H0 U7 n2 V9 v5 J
On the way he noticed that a local business was ( O( ~* r7 _4 g9 K
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he 7 b' I$ U5 P4 e- f
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
4 n0 u0 L! E1 X' y# Ghandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
1 ~1 U- H" }1 H% e" q* ?' Fwith exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross 6 y5 W+ Z( ]( z2 D. m v
embroidered right in the center. It was just 9 W6 h) [/ ~) A% b; O0 r
# z3 n+ Z6 O, l
5 k- j' n0 o; w- |/ K/ f & b) y: [+ c# |- `
7 s8 a8 y) _/ n; f) ?
- ^# D$ b% |; i* [5 M0 b0 L
2 p' P! q( b3 |" a ]1 L5 `0 Sthe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. 1 ?$ D1 I8 e" r! A; D( L/ k+ V* {( f c
B y this time it had started to snow. An older
+ J3 `4 G- [: d. f+ gwoman running from the opposite direction was : \; r8 r+ k k& r& a# R
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
. |* ^7 ^3 Z% x0 o; }& uinvited her to wait in the warm church for + M2 h9 n' R0 s T$ H; a @
the next bus 45 minutes later.
7 F+ u$ X4 `8 F' p N. r1 X; W- r/ D- R4 D
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor 9 Q1 B1 M7 l D8 t% P- [
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
! }% z0 M- b/ nup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
0 q- y# X5 T0 {6 i2 ^% Y7 mcould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. 4 U' y; Q# ~; E* L/ q0 h
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center' q! U7 o+ F; ^) D
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
. C+ r: T: r) T4 @" U7 ^5 |" O. kshe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
4 v2 ]2 Y+ g/ x) d" R5 y6 EThe pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
; D0 _3 ?! N0 c/ s1 X# X" G7 jthe lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
4 W$ `- V; S1 |/ a( Wit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had ) q' t1 y3 e: D2 `" L* y
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
, Z* j3 Q2 @+ T( V# ^T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
' Y( M% g+ K9 l. btold how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The # f+ K# X# L6 w6 z& i
woman explained that before the war she and
7 H1 x7 h, [# I. D8 b) K9 rher husband were well-to-do people in Austria . ' Y- O0 C7 b. @ i: }7 _& Q; S
; s& S' R2 T: n, ?; T: G
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
; Z6 c/ j. o3 z% MHer husband was going to follow her the next week. ( p: U$ C" g! W1 y
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
) |( ]1 e4 c. mhusband or her home again. 8 _8 q& b6 M- J# F* O) P$ Y2 o( |
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;7 x" v- L b4 ~. e$ J
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.
* g, K- m+ D( }The pastor insisted on driving her home. That9 A' B2 n' s T" Z
was the least he could do. She lived on the other
. Z, o2 u7 m8 a* S w* ^; @& Uside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn 8 {8 i w* [( {7 ?4 h/ ]3 @9 H
for the day for a housecleaning job.0 ]; o6 @+ i4 G" X4 z0 a
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas ; J* y# B" |( P% t
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the : Q) P N6 v/ E) q3 O0 Y) d9 R
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the ' o# Q+ [, q0 X% \. N
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door 9 a8 e [3 X0 d# M4 s2 a2 h
and many said that they would return.. 1 C* p3 [. I& V0 P
One older man, whom the pastor recognized
# ^ W+ ?2 G2 i1 R3 S' F- P' x& Vfrom the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
8 m+ r$ ^; B- ~9 Vpews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
1 f. v/ ~9 X1 P9 l& h' n/ K5 }* i( }wasn't leaving.
9 t0 B3 g d d& TThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on + U! F3 r" w3 E0 L
the front wall because it was identical to one $ k3 a1 T# ^0 y/ Q0 o1 b
that his wife had made years ago when
6 k( \* `$ L, e7 q( U" n5 qthey lived in Austria before the war and how
0 K0 ]# \! @( E' ^+ B" y Icould there be two tablecloths so much alike? , v/ O# r8 d7 u2 c( D* x
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he : |+ D. o# [7 Q m/ Z
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was / q9 @" @; m5 X4 a8 H" B. t; U
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
( V( S! W# Q, g9 cput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home4 y; W( a- k C% r+ \, w5 z6 g
again all the 35 years between. 8 `7 A0 s! M" I! `
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to # L0 C0 k+ Q7 R
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten , b9 |0 {( m- W* Q+ Z& b
Island and to the same house where the pastor - E4 [5 `" n+ z" y
had taken the woman three days earlier. 6 @" q i6 t' n4 b
He helped the man climb the three flights of. D1 U# O6 m, `! g' ^ u
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on8 N! l( {( v c9 m' C; r4 h0 I
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas
% m& y8 c+ ?2 w% F% ]reunion he could ever imagine., h7 ~' t4 g' R
