& [, X% h5 g$ ]( a6 v, yto their first ministry, to reopen a church " J( u8 m9 T8 [* o$ t
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October ! f; |" j. ]( r! [
excited about their opportunities. When they saw 8 \3 M! ]) Z+ U; S9 \2 ^4 d. s/ q
their church, it was very run down and needed 3 ^2 N. z+ i% L* J! R
much work. They set a goal to have everything
) u& R# g5 O, r0 u) q' D) B5 i" Adone in time to have their first service
m- M9 U3 {( b, O$ ?" non Christmas Eve.
1 F% k: h' s% r) M8 s' T& \T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,( r# h U% F0 m: O! a6 d
painting, etc, and on December 18
) `9 G' H( X" N, ]0 U/ J/ ywere ahead of schedule and just about finished. " a3 x- k4 p% d- y& B) n5 g r
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
M, Z3 [; y* Y& r4 c3 ]$ c' hrainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
3 p# c. `) f z6 r* k9 G O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church. g+ h0 `" r8 n# o" m
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had- e7 s' o) e# X$ [. M% z& P
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about
0 q" j& ~4 p- [7 K% M, Z0 d5 o! l20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
m: V' Y/ x- O' f5 oof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, 2 ~, A. f7 ]2 Y
beginning about head high. 7 e u0 H' f1 _! @! {2 p. r% ~
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
% `# V4 `% U2 u( o. C, B: Band not knowing what else to do but postpone
9 H: T1 X1 h0 \- [& v+ y( W. }' xthe Christmas Eve service, headed home.
, l8 @3 v3 k+ E1 o0 p: L2 gOn the way he noticed that a local business was ; x1 S$ G! @- l. b, T0 q: v
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he & M9 U! e% F3 s7 y+ Z/ r6 g
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
9 s" ?: C* M% h3 z5 e- {! thandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
4 M( B b) w! n8 G. zwith exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross ' r" @$ ]' M& f; N. p
embroidered right in the center. It was just 8 E; V5 A# n+ N5 g
* d2 b8 W8 u. {. f, D' p0 _9 h5 E& O* P

5 N; H& }+ R$ o# `$ L k . t5 d9 s" f' N g+ K! E, k: T
6 Q2 Z0 J6 u. u9 C Y+ wthe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
5 `1 {. M8 W9 ~# W' T+ t bB y this time it had started to snow. An older c! Z. S( `) Y o2 u5 f6 O7 S
woman running from the opposite direction was
; D2 }- ]; L& ?1 [0 Z( }. P+ N) N3 `trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
& q$ {7 q( B: M4 z: K' O# B0 _9 cinvited her to wait in the warm church for + `# R2 j: p* }; q
the next bus 45 minutes later.
' I B. l& R1 P6 i/ l8 p/ N+ ^& b, S, y
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
7 ]- z4 [* q( g- G- ~4 X cwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
. R! ?0 {" _ r. Z; m7 S7 `up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor 1 C. j c/ I. ^
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
5 B) V4 O8 F1 \0 Y5 JT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
5 b9 L9 O" g5 B- [' g" o0 Maisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
+ \- k6 e$ h* O. g6 Zshe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" 1 v, [/ {0 k+ Z- V
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
& f$ E8 C0 o. A% C( xthe lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
4 O2 E$ H1 |; |) _ Y' Iit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
! R! S" D- X# Y0 Kmade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
/ o* G: b# e7 ?# f) J, d( ~T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
0 g f; J6 b: Z" E$ [3 rtold how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The * g1 J2 K7 X0 X( c6 }9 r3 ?
woman explained that before the war she and / w( Y" M9 \& W5 |
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria .

When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
( U+ e& M$ x' ~8 _. m: a+ c; M4 SHer husband was going to follow her the next week.
6 K9 R! V8 F3 V: t! i* \9 e) J1 gHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her 1 V3 s' X# ~. A& q
husband or her home again.
8 `1 P' t) `3 }( \9 I: b9 kT he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;1 K* F9 ?3 c- t
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.
( a( S, A7 t/ k6 T' rThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That$ d- R2 F* o4 M. {9 Z
was the least he could do. She lived on the other! j; L! j8 M1 L0 X
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn 8 R. {/ A1 X4 u8 m& d
for the day for a housecleaning job.1 `, d% |1 A E: V D
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas 7 e6 c9 \% t |+ o2 _
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the % Z L! |0 O* N5 H9 R" G2 ^' J: C# |
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the
& o' `6 u+ H0 o) O! Qpastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
# a# V8 r5 m" h8 w; Y+ s( rand many said that they would return.. ! Q- \. d m* x9 V8 r
One older man, whom the pastor recognized " Q# P: q7 R( O
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the # J+ ~, a( h, r1 ?
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he

The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on 7 R: n7 w2 c# q3 u/ x, K
the front wall because it was identical to one
# x, c/ q1 v2 B/ U. m( ]that his wife had made years ago when ) Y% T; F0 m0 z. C& z( X( S$ j
they lived in Austria before the war and how
0 M3 G! F$ M8 o4 M5 U5 ycould there be two tablecloths so much alike? 6 k9 I7 J" e0 B* G- B
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
) H' L1 w( i) |forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was 3 u/ [) F1 X6 [; ?- Q+ o
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and: `* G' a" c/ p/ n
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home+ z7 n6 L, J* q: R+ n$ O
again all the 35 years between. i" a, s4 a; l. z1 S; ?
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
! Y; a0 E4 W \7 B2 ftake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten & {2 y# s( g6 `* F6 s5 h/ W8 C/ N! i
Island and to the same house where the pastor
0 q2 m+ \# Z. {" ]had taken the woman three days earlier.
$ X. V" T; \0 W. ?) S6 D/ Z8 WHe helped the man climb the three flights of
( } ]# E8 I- O- wstairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
. O& @5 P1 O( q; @: P6 ythe door and he saw the greatest Christmas : J3 D( Q( g! e# W
