The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned . d" s' D5 D3 s6 M8 H4 C8 g
to their first ministry, to reopen a church
0 g, r, Z' |; c' d5 f7 R9 |in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
8 j5 B& ]2 G9 N* h1 Eexcited about their opportunities. When they saw
& U( s# Y Q5 ptheir church, it was very run down and needed : @7 C$ ?1 w( |
much work. They set a goal to have everything ; |# d/ E9 R3 ~; T B" _
done in time to have their first service
# ^! u* d, X) Q/ X4 b ron Christmas Eve. 0 j" z9 m2 T+ n& m+ b( ^3 y
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
. L. B& n2 j( S, j' A* g: opainting, etc, and on December 18 ( t O) v' F# ^4 ?$ A# p" \0 N
were ahead of schedule and just about finished.
$ x8 M s. ^( h9 ]) P( E: QO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving + T/ u& ^9 K$ o8 D) s
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
3 h- q% R& r1 g9 A+ k O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.0 \+ f$ I, A/ E9 ^4 W
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had
; W8 B) X6 r& `leaked, causing a large area of plaster about
7 `$ Y5 B4 P# m0 X) j+ q+ I# w1 B4 T20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall - a0 q* `5 m/ m& _
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, - U b3 c) U% B) j
beginning about head high.
- U) A! w- s* t; ]" aT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, % O5 V8 u# m' E8 a2 K) @7 ^
and not knowing what else to do but postpone ' t7 Y; I; k1 T2 L2 k! w
the Christmas Eve service, headed home.
: D/ z- p: O% q% k0 u! x7 iOn the way he noticed that a local business was " h" p, ?3 d/ c4 G. t% J
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he / u9 J; e) k5 B
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, * q/ j0 V/ k2 n; U& A0 J
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth 3 ^3 D. D. a- G9 ~$ ?
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
3 V" h" }- j3 Z0 q- Z9 O- j/ oembroidered right in the center. It was just % m+ p D( d, L! V7 D9 o8 T& [
% O# M) Y, u! `) ]5 w
( t' M9 i% V$ x1 u9 {+ b$ N

5 P: r1 b0 ]- J. Y3 W $ I" t6 P4 w- ?4 _
" G& c7 {. p; J$ bthe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. , U; L! _% A' G" P
B y this time it had started to snow. An older
: `4 c; r3 _' |) A& I- {woman running from the opposite direction was # @/ g5 Y- I1 Z J3 b. V9 o
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
* k4 ~% O: ~2 B3 l2 t5 O$ ^invited her to wait in the warm church for
3 q: z6 i2 O. c' l6 m0 ~/ z5 nthe next bus 45 minutes later.
3 i+ F: F+ s" r* R5 {9 E7 l8 F/ n
' Q9 ^4 q" @; G; B+ }She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
- v! S5 D% @+ \while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
' c! K3 ~0 R/ L! Tup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor ' I4 Y" N6 E2 q6 D2 b) n
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. 0 P0 w |, |: \; h, K! o' O, ?9 ^
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
, ^" G2 _! l7 N8 n, }aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
/ v! Q! X8 J4 G8 T+ ^she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" 3 y& \2 H) a8 o# h, J
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check# t( p' P: y" H$ U& ^7 D9 I" P; S
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into* I# T3 m# g3 L! K/ {3 P6 s, \% [9 P
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
$ B4 ]# l/ v4 |8 omade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . & ^* T/ \# ~/ D ?5 i/ q
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor 2 ?; Z) Y. `# P$ r- j0 m
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The * H/ m- {6 c9 y8 k
woman explained that before the war she and - ]% F) s2 j" N
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
7 Q9 s8 g7 @7 o! m- B/ t0 p" O* }4 i' w! T5 x! ^, Q* G7 w
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. : B" [. ^# {; d/ M2 Z" g) E
Her husband was going to follow her the next week. 2 T1 \5 z9 Q% |! w$ h8 L) H" t! j
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her - X9 r6 b/ K0 N4 K
husband or her home again. ! T& S# W! E& Q" f
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
8 }2 C8 y4 O H3 F8 N. \but she made the pastor keep it for the church.
5 O* s* ]! }* l. I( e* W/ ]The pastor insisted on driving her home. That3 S4 E* R4 Y/ `! }$ |4 X: e7 v
was the least he could do. She lived on the other
& X& q1 i0 A C2 v4 gside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
# I8 q3 R: s6 ?; R/ p9 C- Efor the day for a housecleaning job.
- { v2 ]' m W3 vW hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas $ R: z- e& |( H# F; ~
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the 4 R1 J+ D! s, `) e3 A: Q! E6 D
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the - R+ b2 T L1 n" A
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door ! y9 p6 |! o! p$ S
and many said that they would return..
9 w; M, m- J% e2 WOne older man, whom the pastor recognized
% w! z! @# o/ t3 Lfrom the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
4 S! h! I1 r4 o# _pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he ; [/ f2 |' l- W' U. b# \( r! E
wasn't leaving.
' c/ u7 u. X4 A1 \The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on & u$ v! m0 p: U8 b3 O
the front wall because it was identical to one 0 q* Q, T% A$ G- E
that his wife had made years ago when
4 S# `, q% @8 M% H" {; fthey lived in Austria before the war and how
1 ?) k0 e/ u. c% Q' n" K. dcould there be two tablecloths so much alike? , i! z# ~: D; g6 W
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he $ M) j! g' Z" d' f. H
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
6 g B6 A, C& K; Y7 [- _supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
6 a C( k5 M" U$ B9 C; Kput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home& R5 k& P! w' J. v8 y, i
again all the 35 years between. % G: ?" y0 b8 o
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to J& Y# U- R% O2 P* ?) W1 ?0 S
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
. F2 R7 Q9 p# y9 L1 O+ d9 mIsland and to the same house where the pastor 2 v- s( Z! U+ Q& t. e" m
had taken the woman three days earlier.
* e1 c: \# `$ X- F: @+ CHe helped the man climb the three flights of
/ K) i, F0 S6 m# t1 X) w; ^stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
$ b D! W7 o& \& J+ M$ t y" [7 o Xthe door and he saw the greatest Christmas + c6 R" G% [1 h9 b+ f/ u
reunion he could ever imagine.
