The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned
1 \1 N. u4 r5 }& D8 X1 Z/ [to their first ministry, to reopen a church
, Q% X; e6 `; i1 Iin suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
& e+ w, X; y Q+ h5 N& sexcited about their opportunities. When they saw
- y" _) k" e9 z" l- w% U# ntheir church, it was very run down and needed 0 o6 p. r: U1 w; h' W3 z
much work. They set a goal to have everything
4 V' p- H5 H; g; s0 Kdone in time to have their first service 0 ?5 {4 N7 P# X
on Christmas Eve. " O3 I5 }8 p# p' |4 @2 M
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
- [, b$ ~8 \& ?( n% h% fpainting, etc, and on December 18
) K) d" q- g" x; R6 q: z: nwere ahead of schedule and just about finished. 9 @; q- C; l- R! E1 }
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
" i7 K' _) V1 K. ?! w" t6 grainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
3 _; z+ E o7 v4 l6 m+ k2 w O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
/ a5 e% h# ^" T# U* \His heart sank when he saw that the roof had
& I& b4 l5 d( j, Dleaked, causing a large area of plaster about
: S3 g1 G- u) I; F20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall % I3 R" o: z; j# m
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
: f" v5 _- C- ~; k3 i% x% s0 P: kbeginning about head high.
1 c4 y" S; O) e7 N! IT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
6 b8 b- Q% [9 i7 M* ?8 @and not knowing what else to do but postpone
8 I8 d; w. t& N* Hthe Christmas Eve service, headed home. / s ]% a5 i! `+ c7 x
On the way he noticed that a local business was / ]4 b5 S" J1 @4 K/ p
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he ; f1 L4 f4 I. F
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
6 w+ t/ _3 s6 P1 [/ Ohandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth # t' A0 @* g( b& B7 d# ?9 G6 C
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross 3 b5 p" v- [0 u9 f
embroidered right in the center. It was just
' f( H7 K7 m2 G , g; o( _) P7 y: v* `
; v# O8 E& S+ L }3 z; w9 ]
% K( W3 D( Z: A, ^4 K/ O7 j5 S4 Y( M/ k$ \4 E) Y
% H: Y% @( t# G+ W4 H# y7 m0 Y9 ]' }: c- c& `
the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. 3 r2 l9 W7 ]1 F) T7 E; R
B y this time it had started to snow. An older 6 _# Y6 i ?1 V; Q* ~- D
woman running from the opposite direction was
- @, }$ O) N/ R5 j0 X8 T$ [trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
( P$ [0 }; a- Y' S% X& D [invited her to wait in the warm church for * ~# M" D2 b' h, q0 E, t g
the next bus 45 minutes later. . {* Z i) V5 O) p C
X0 c5 [1 R7 u. w8 J9 q$ `
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor " o5 k- d }0 v9 p; S, j \
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
( r7 N B4 A& J+ eup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
, z% O' L+ J2 d6 a$ _+ Kcould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
" r" _. k. T, B; l8 ?2 ]2 ?( iT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center6 m, Y7 B, I4 ~+ f
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
9 |7 v& | R7 m- ~, Y3 ` lshe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" ) L0 p% p7 j/ k D
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check5 o4 i+ |8 ]; C( k. y- S" v7 a
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
5 _& @% h( ^4 \) {it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had 3 w9 p7 f% @( K/ m9 k/ n( x
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
, K/ s; {8 x+ m1 \$ j& JT he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
1 n( E! n; r- ?9 Y, X, }2 l1 D% Ztold how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
) H4 u2 [$ i+ M7 _" e. Wwoman explained that before the war she and
5 h1 c. } X9 lher husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
% H$ s# d, @( Z( d/ G
~/ I1 M0 Z& A8 |When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. 6 I8 U8 D# r, x
Her husband was going to follow her the next week. ' E9 G/ Q3 B( h- A
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
+ R [4 S' b& q, G& ] thusband or her home again.
9 R# i( i' `! [: E& A7 E4 D8 XT he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
8 T( O: S* V' B5 R1 nbut she made the pastor keep it for the church.
/ i! l' H8 D' d( eThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That" b$ S+ j. a9 \2 h1 R2 E- M5 k
was the least he could do. She lived on the other
2 W, i/ | T8 N6 _, s% Iside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn $ Y# b' M w# Z: }0 Y
for the day for a housecleaning job.
" t# i9 o/ ?% w" `W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas * ~, Z) d8 e1 d, K
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the " S, \8 O: K J: I4 p- r
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the ( c' ?$ }, ? c$ O
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door ' [& a0 o+ x7 }1 F# i2 y8 B
and many said that they would return.. % {# K- C [4 A" i+ S
One older man, whom the pastor recognized ! T0 _# e' O6 F/ s- ~5 B! b
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
) }- y& s: g6 m, e8 @+ S% S% vpews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he 0 k2 u: K% p4 L4 E; r
wasn't leaving. " `" d5 V" h9 E& u
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on 2 H. Q$ H! f9 ?8 \( a
the front wall because it was identical to one $ x: G, f5 j$ Q! o, `( m0 x
that his wife had made years ago when c/ H# o! n7 _, i' w
they lived in Austria before the war and how - n1 c4 A* c- h! @) G
could there be two tablecloths so much alike?
2 ^ C5 g- C$ J" s; Y g6 o# [9 _H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
1 @( i3 ]/ `7 S( ]0 yforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
R3 X- F0 N7 k) m" Isupposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
. L- r4 w% ]; h6 K! u' Mput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home
* D& M! R4 S/ a4 Q+ \again all the 35 years between. 5 k$ b h+ q8 |4 A* Y
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
( C2 Q0 m5 C7 S% }- M! M9 c% Dtake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten ( q* L0 |3 C' x, H0 A$ |, ~2 _
Island and to the same house where the pastor
0 N: Z7 L; z9 l8 c k$ }had taken the woman three days earlier.
* V! S; O% E- a3 GHe helped the man climb the three flights of/ |3 v5 K! x% [+ P
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
* O# T! H4 y7 i- O. R Xthe door and he saw the greatest Christmas
1 F' z* {' B" Z4 A. N# g/ ~reunion he could ever imagine.
