 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason. {6 j( t$ G. g$ q% B

The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned $ q6 V2 C3 |; |5 z* x4 c
to their first ministry, to reopen a church
& T5 @4 Y) [3 \8 j6 {0 U+ m) Bin suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
' s' O4 Q2 H2 K( T* m c. Lexcited about their opportunities. When they saw
# v# w, B2 _1 F3 ]1 u6 Ltheir church, it was very run down and needed 0 z' p; l* o- k! [( r1 [
much work. They set a goal to have everything
; j4 _: H2 E& q* K# u+ Udone in time to have their first service
' U- h( i$ `7 b( [. u: Oon Christmas Eve.
# }! A! Z. G+ X, FT hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
" S# @6 t7 S6 apainting, etc, and on December 18 ( e1 C& X# [2 t" L, v" ]- H
were ahead of schedule and just about finished. 8 | x+ s7 L7 Y& T& v( b6 `7 k
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
, D. }, k: o& W% ]. a/ Erainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. % K p( w7 k; l
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.: L5 q0 J, {( t, w4 ^: \
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had
- Y, `, q8 k$ {3 X! ~4 ileaked, causing a large area of plaster about
- s. i$ K9 ]& q20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
& g" [& i' G6 v7 W$ \2 ?" w! N: v" Eof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, " M1 D( L# f# {7 D) s7 t
beginning about head high. 4 }+ Y" S. V! M
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
4 o7 o- l- ~2 a; D0 L4 w6 {3 vand not knowing what else to do but postpone
0 E e) r9 E3 F, V9 x f& [. Z4 P& Othe Christmas Eve service, headed home.
& C& f" U& Q) a' uOn the way he noticed that a local business was
0 j0 d: }: {9 K+ hhaving a flea market type sale for charity, so he ( u- f7 _ z' A! e$ I: i
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, ' M' m! H) z0 Z5 M
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth ; Q- k7 n2 {" L9 B
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
8 ^; {) v6 Y$ `5 x$ fembroidered right in the center. It was just ! R$ y& x% Q J$ A- B3 M/ o, R1 e' _
9 N9 x, z: C9 c. Z" I6 K4 [
4 D+ S8 R M9 H+ i% D) T. f

the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. 4 [& E5 ^9 r7 b" e
B y this time it had started to snow. An older
& M% F: i0 H v7 D% Zwoman running from the opposite direction was * N% i* U& o @9 w
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor + f* k5 O/ e) S- b
invited her to wait in the warm church for
4 N _# |/ c. H6 W- qthe next bus 45 minutes later.

/ }; t) a$ V6 A- v# v6 v* l% pShe sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
5 ^5 t3 V5 a1 c- [: T1 R" t/ }while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
: { J0 H9 J1 m, Bup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor & k! g8 S. n; u1 _
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. 8 W! T3 o- v& }
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center9 Z, T( x; \( j: f
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"; R" e) a+ e" h& Y: C# _
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" + m7 }. G0 l6 c& q
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
9 i0 V' D4 K: v3 z; Rthe lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
' v, {+ Z Z. w, Q8 L4 s% M, iit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had T5 {7 H) k1 W/ }0 a
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . $ l6 i( y1 |! g+ g1 g% Y
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor . @6 {: F5 l7 @
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
f$ B1 b# H( Ywoman explained that before the war she and - ?. d" b- m; z0 H b
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria . l0 v+ L' \6 a3 C6 c6 e
) I/ z! B# [" a+ {* J% V
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. 2 K" w9 l$ t+ w8 }7 w& t5 l2 {
Her husband was going to follow her the next week.
6 `* C, B& U6 J; B N' YHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
2 q3 A: r C. |0 v+ q& J1 Y, [husband or her home again. ' d* U. @/ Q# A* j3 J) l. l2 G
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
( g; c% ?+ _# X4 {, Xbut she made the pastor keep it for the church.. X) _5 r# J- v! a$ K
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That P( U' s G) b! V
was the least he could do. She lived on the other$ b8 s9 g' z: a% N/ V% s
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn , B5 ]+ u, n2 C
for the day for a housecleaning job.
! r) \1 [& e; x. k" zW hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas - y: `! @' v' n7 h6 e. {
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the
% }9 V. t, ]; I) `" J: S6 pspirit were great. At the end of the service, the
% w( V; H( b8 R( d3 m+ N& H% `pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door 6 o0 F6 ?8 L/ }0 x8 B% A. N8 @7 g
and many said that they would return.. - l7 L! a$ x# g0 Y% H
One older man, whom the pastor recognized / L7 i6 L& {4 P1 ^# f
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the $ |7 ?6 P# R4 V l$ Q: p6 |- \
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he 4 L1 d) |' N; }) p/ q1 H7 Q
wasn't leaving. ' v4 Q2 i4 f3 P' \/ x
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
2 L2 N4 Z' B& @5 z, v9 e4 G2 i& \+ F5 Cthe front wall because it was identical to one 9 ~' k. f- j% q$ O, F) ?4 R
that his wife had made years ago when
- s4 Y5 @5 o" M [5 \' P8 B" Rthey lived in Austria before the war and how
' S$ h) A# ]! ocould there be two tablecloths so much alike? 2 z! K% |" X5 h. |# `
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he ( m( ?- v$ ~! {% L( |8 L8 o
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
( y% i1 n1 \# f/ p# Z6 ~supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
$ N1 s& h, `$ W; iput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home
0 ~1 p- n5 t. N" a/ U2 Aagain all the 35 years between. 6 @# w' }1 ~/ A1 w% y# Z
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to % s0 x4 g+ F2 k' D# s( ]$ [6 y
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten , V2 l# @- `" j. V% C( O9 D
Island and to the same house where the pastor , B1 s4 a) Q/ c H5 m& z
had taken the woman three days earlier. ; Z6 G: o# L: C2 C
He helped the man climb the three flights of! |' b! S( w$ q( |" e5 }
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
1 E9 [; g A5 ^! I1 B7 a, X" E* Rthe door and he saw the greatest Christmas
- Z; b, l- O7 [6 s; o! a: e6 {reunion he could ever imagine.
