9 f) v/ v7 |, E, E, p+ uto their first ministry, to reopen a church
2 M" ?0 I, v2 Z8 U# ~' fin suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
) W8 B. [0 ?; y1 K+ Wexcited about their opportunities. When they saw 8 C$ w' J. @1 }: t8 @
their church, it was very run down and needed $ W; h7 K& U- l: X$ ~
much work. They set a goal to have everything
, z' g0 a# l$ U$ L$ ]: s# W4 Wdone in time to have their first service " W4 o1 I I [; \8 p0 t8 s/ p* `& C
on Christmas Eve.
2 d, z* e3 U5 t- A8 ~& ]T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,5 C! t4 }. Q, {& c1 b' Q) f
painting, etc, and on December 18 ; t+ t. h3 `; p, t+ z$ `0 L+ V& }7 K
were ahead of schedule and just about finished. + Z3 X0 O, g4 l5 z$ q: p% v
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
4 {/ Z0 Y, F- y4 e2 srainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
3 B) a0 K4 K7 K$ I% C O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church./ M6 B4 r8 ?: K
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had. t2 \* e9 R! T3 R; L Y, B
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about
$ k7 ^% V( b9 R3 Q20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
! i. Z+ e' m) D9 _2 Jof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
4 m# l6 N7 a" @3 X# z! [beginning about head high.
6 ]- B0 L: z( E8 l" QT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
' H" D) |3 t# w0 J# x2 c3 pand not knowing what else to do but postpone . y; L+ V. z4 B. [2 W& l4 z s
the Christmas Eve service, headed home. 4 J: `- I) s$ E; t
On the way he noticed that a local business was
, K* i$ T c* _6 X, f% K0 @having a flea market type sale for charity, so he , m# }& T4 q% g/ |) O! d4 w! W
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, / g( h* g9 U' N2 u
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
2 o$ [( X& D. G$ _: j% u. Swith exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
! O7 V2 L' U" ]1 d2 qembroidered right in the center. It was just 6 g- L# @8 U" C1 f6 X
# T* W V' @# W( O! W* b
& \( e, }, F. o: K* K8 F# y
# `( Z: V3 i6 [0 J [! n, l) w
- G; B; ]6 ?2 g/ r1 k# h/ Q
. q) G' a/ @2 Q3 R' D
( `4 l! j/ f$ P, Q' bthe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. ( E: J3 X8 r- X8 C
B y this time it had started to snow. An older # V7 W; k0 Y/ D8 K0 F
woman running from the opposite direction was ; i/ E1 Q2 P5 ^# R3 D
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
* \* J% T$ E" ?# Kinvited her to wait in the warm church for
+ n- o, a9 p/ u3 k9 x/ ~. ~' R- Ithe next bus 45 minutes later.

She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
7 `$ H0 |# x+ \. f. R* M: I$ jwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
, _( a1 W/ H1 Zup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
& J7 L6 x1 d, Rcould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. / H7 b9 f: n7 E2 p+ ?* }
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
9 o" T8 ~* o. E6 F( ^aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
: q: ]6 e( h0 M3 cshe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" # R1 f; \* p% W" D
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check; m! n, a) m9 S# M, c' s/ j
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into S: Y2 V( u3 L1 l, f, M
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had 7 F8 U- k+ G' l( y$ X
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . % F9 \) S6 m, \7 q& J
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
g+ p; W. e( n+ q4 ?; b. Ttold how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The 1 X0 }# V8 k% p
woman explained that before the war she and
' d: r' o, m- ]( Pher husband were well-to-do people in Austria . 6 m: z- I+ Q3 @4 u( \
. J. l# Q3 V5 v4 I( T7 U# O
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
* r- V u! @% D* c, ^. |Her husband was going to follow her the next week.
3 X. E% @* g# U. Y6 d! oHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her 0 T6 `- `) R) ?. e! a2 g7 H
husband or her home again.
: P; _* D4 u1 G7 ^& N( vT he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;0 \( z" W& U' ^ a1 Y
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.
}) V, w+ v6 P* _% u8 t' Y; [- vThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That3 n& }9 z) G9 f1 L9 s
was the least he could do. She lived on the other
" e% A3 ]5 j+ vside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
1 i9 w' z* v5 J/ a4 ]* P! ~& [for the day for a housecleaning job.
2 s3 ^: c: A' S1 z5 B6 q9 f( F# ]/ yW hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
2 }, X) I. ~% r2 W/ |Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the
$ T. ]4 m7 v0 C5 r8 d4 }$ e/ i- @5 Zspirit were great. At the end of the service, the
( W. {: g4 W6 \7 B9 j+ lpastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
. q# B' h9 N# j. P+ m2 iand many said that they would return..
4 i) I6 z: s0 IOne older man, whom the pastor recognized $ V6 `+ a( Y% s- S5 \1 H
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the 5 A8 \5 U# p4 T" w. S. C; S t2 s
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
7 Z9 u: y/ `8 z! x6 awasn't leaving. v$ j1 u* K$ C/ ]. Q D! g% t
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on 1 I) ~+ z" w# c
the front wall because it was identical to one ! R: j' r: C" ^! r
that his wife had made years ago when 2 n) c" g0 H0 m! {# v# P
they lived in Austria before the war and how
: _/ o8 z3 t2 R6 ]# V+ Fcould there be two tablecloths so much alike?
+ h2 M$ e1 D: W. e dH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
1 w5 ~7 D9 Y* b7 ?7 J# m. P" j& Pforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
4 E. E6 W c8 _; T$ ]supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and3 J/ I* _( I5 R! O
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home2 w' |* H8 c: P* I& g
again all the 35 years between. 9 X3 u, \9 I# ~
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to # x+ J, L/ C4 e# B1 D
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
5 q: g! _* x8 z0 F! _Island and to the same house where the pastor
f# p7 h# [. G dhad taken the woman three days earlier. 9 A( B5 ?# |& {- u& B7 |3 ]0 R
He helped the man climb the three flights of
H$ @. Y1 z7 e: N# D$ Q' o; estairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on4 F% ~% B8 O- O/ R
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas
' L3 Q% \/ _& E$ m* x5 n2 Dreunion he could ever imagine.

difficult at best, just remember I'm here # S$ I# n) u, l; O$ h# i% f$ T
