The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned 3 ?! a- w \- A3 D0 n, W2 {3 [
to their first ministry, to reopen a church
- m2 \; e' q9 ~- Min suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
9 g. U4 e4 p/ ]8 ?/ y$ sexcited about their opportunities. When they saw
. ^& K$ w2 Z1 M$ H! Btheir church, it was very run down and needed 4 G" ]1 R& R$ Z x& X; i
much work. They set a goal to have everything ! }! P2 B! l' l# Z1 I1 X# i$ {& q
done in time to have their first service
% | _+ Q: n! T! Z0 B* con Christmas Eve. 3 p/ j$ O+ O, G5 _0 U7 G( H3 {
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
6 |6 t, g# t! C; t1 n4 B) J* [painting, etc, and on December 18 5 a( ^: c& c) l, O2 [& \
were ahead of schedule and just about finished.
$ G4 }9 E6 B' s- LO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving * }4 _7 V1 J: L4 X, A/ y. `
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. ) d3 }1 U) e/ Q. H
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.# ~% i3 v3 l! w
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had7 }4 m2 V7 h* i& L% I: l7 y% ^
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about * r- p2 k0 x3 O# s/ J
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall % b+ H. |4 d/ l. A6 \% t) @
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
$ S7 i: Y7 O3 c' O9 Z2 xbeginning about head high.
# A; ^2 n# V' K0 Y, ET he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
) A' H# T0 `8 [& Gand not knowing what else to do but postpone 3 {+ Q% s. S2 S2 {8 M
the Christmas Eve service, headed home. . N& }8 t) |3 t' l2 r- |2 [* @" w
On the way he noticed that a local business was
- X' x. j: |. O" M ghaving a flea market type sale for charity, so he
& W9 G# K: v3 Fstopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, 9 f4 p- a& L3 m( v5 l! i. ^; T
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth . R" ~: G% Z$ K" s
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
- k" S" L2 W6 pembroidered right in the center. It was just
* D8 q3 t- I( u* E1 J4 j* N
$ m1 p" s) H' Q* J( Q w' t' i: ~' T; N
! H) m. H8 J( B9 X" I% t
+ M. [# L4 Y- ^6 r& G( H: ^% `; i

the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
' [: s$ N3 w" l1 u6 l' f+ [B y this time it had started to snow. An older & C n+ A' ^) E1 v7 _( F" |" f
woman running from the opposite direction was $ ]$ \ I* b1 `2 p$ W
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor 0 x3 c# e) ^* }7 ?; Z; S1 l
invited her to wait in the warm church for 1 r' T D: N. u6 X6 }- p- ]) W
the next bus 45 minutes later. # W/ {9 t; R- C6 N
+ g3 o U0 `3 P( r0 L! k9 I3 N
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
$ P4 }# v9 K: c: X4 ?6 Ewhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
( l I4 n1 B9 ^% f- e2 Y7 o1 Nup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
8 u- N& S3 o( y3 ?/ q/ Kcould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
/ {# V- S X. b) \T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center% F- V0 i+ e2 k7 [" R) p( |1 {* l
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"3 b) f) m5 V F9 `$ J
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" + o3 O& l! Z7 C1 y1 z4 l
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
' f, t+ {" X- Q o- P' Sthe lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
5 _, a, v1 N. ?' Lit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
3 n, |$ {3 q3 L: u' C- t& emade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
( l6 w" U6 f$ }- @ s1 y% AT he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor ) R m8 o$ ~3 y9 e" o, }8 e
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
5 `( f! V% }; {0 a2 `# y5 t5 F* Rwoman explained that before the war she and 2 W4 ?/ U/ w( x D
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
+ s3 N! @ ^- q3 t7 `9 H- ` ^9 E5 j' N' q! T
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. " M1 U- ^2 N) X: a4 d }8 |
Her husband was going to follow her the next week.
( X' q, X8 }. k! h7 EHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her 3 ?8 M2 b* R! f: S$ {$ v
husband or her home again.
9 j, B% v1 ~- r' t, j; X$ }T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
! @: d: Q& I/ K- Y8 ebut she made the pastor keep it for the church.
" _$ D+ ?, e" B' p- l V+ ZThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That0 Y3 x" I0 {9 _+ S) A
was the least he could do. She lived on the other
2 D- r/ |2 w G# ]4 @side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
' ^- V, \" \2 g0 ~! rfor the day for a housecleaning job.8 ]+ ~" f# L p P9 N6 o1 S$ T
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas & ~, Y( s; L' p
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the
" ^1 L4 r0 X( U% K% Z( ?. Ispirit were great. At the end of the service, the # `7 _: P+ P5 t: p! v: z
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door 7 Y: K1 b2 K0 D& v3 M
and many said that they would return.. 2 j' A1 [" z ?5 K0 w
One older man, whom the pastor recognized 3 X$ |$ ]$ @& \. f! q* {; j
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the ) r# N4 ^. h5 U+ M: [- }; Z
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
8 a% F3 m8 t% ^; Vwasn't leaving.
0 D+ L9 x" i0 ]! W9 G1 QThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on 1 X, K+ O( m# K* p
the front wall because it was identical to one % L9 n1 d2 k/ e% `
that his wife had made years ago when
: Y, H9 p: S& ]* kthey lived in Austria before the war and how
, e- \, B% b1 ncould there be two tablecloths so much alike?
) o9 U& G2 d$ X6 z8 j8 ?4 eH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
2 K9 `& i: w4 [) g8 Nforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was 1 ~/ D1 |$ R( b6 ?
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and# j$ A& S; t0 ^9 M( O
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home: M. i% ?8 s. |( C- g: N
again all the 35 years between.
5 I; ?5 u- _3 B: j. t( M8 @3 JT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
4 e9 k$ l! }: T' L1 |take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten ; b# I9 U, e; P% C( m2 }; g
Island and to the same house where the pastor
$ _8 w7 p0 u$ o6 d7 B0 I$ V! khad taken the woman three days earlier. 1 F/ n# h& n/ t# [, k
He helped the man climb the three flights of1 a9 X1 P! d( s& B
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on; C" p6 T, b/ {
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas 5 g4 [& t+ _" O
reunion he could ever imagine.- y$ }) |& j/ M- b4 x/ f

promises are true, and when we give Him all our
