$ o9 R9 d" J. f0 P; ] The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned " n5 ?; {( N Y2 w7 x
to their first ministry, to reopen a church
% H- o5 E& b/ ]1 Pin suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
8 Q! {4 A$ V' c: b; i! ^excited about their opportunities. When they saw
8 d: w" `( r% _( p$ k S! ^their church, it was very run down and needed
8 Y- P. P' d2 ^# Umuch work. They set a goal to have everything 1 Z; f+ y) D7 p6 _/ L" G
done in time to have their first service
6 D4 [ t: ?6 w. u2 H( E7 q! Don Christmas Eve. 8 K8 e( X7 t& K0 S+ ~5 ]
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
# I& M5 s* O; [$ ppainting, etc, and on December 18
' V. q6 C0 s4 }- P# Cwere ahead of schedule and just about finished.
5 s. p( M+ X! W* V+ pO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
/ O; q: G- v9 B# Nrainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. 2 i. A5 P6 s: ^7 J
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.6 y" s- R; S |* \) q
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had) K- u; P& e# \
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about
: H- X3 ^0 H8 b( W0 X2 l20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall 8 ]# G9 {2 U: q) m+ D+ c& D' T* k
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
& U, ~0 A! y* ?beginning about head high. 9 B4 m/ i: {* B$ |7 f
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
?2 T9 x) Q6 f' F" oand not knowing what else to do but postpone
4 _5 s- ]) B/ \: Y9 Nthe Christmas Eve service, headed home. ) j) k3 c0 t+ J9 S1 n, f
On the way he noticed that a local business was
5 I0 ]1 Q8 t Lhaving a flea market type sale for charity, so he % C: t: I6 D% Z! S3 g
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
% i" X8 I/ s, I4 `handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth , A9 P! G' M; o% |
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross 7 l% S. U _5 W6 a4 d) l
embroidered right in the center. It was just 2 `% l r) `, D* A5 m8 U
A! {1 W$ l, m( @6 `- @
* c% d) R% |% L: J4 q2 w & }" G6 P* F& N

the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. 8 e. `% `& S( T/ Z1 O8 B3 K
B y this time it had started to snow. An older
0 T q2 b/ M- \) x$ i o* pwoman running from the opposite direction was ) `1 V( |2 a5 w7 V; h
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
8 g, Q3 k3 a4 R# W4 T* @invited her to wait in the warm church for
; Y% i8 c9 F6 C; ?the next bus 45 minutes later. 2 f5 Z0 `9 |7 I$ v
6 R4 T0 R. b# {6 a2 S h& S* r1 ?
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor + i9 e6 w- n' \- ~2 C
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
1 @3 `! d/ u* O `2 L! F6 m+ cup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
2 l7 @/ b1 H( B! }4 hcould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. ; S ~# A- ?& ]9 Y
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center, e0 r a6 E, L) h7 q' n4 H+ V( ^/ d
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
7 U+ t* ]- @6 i' t5 i6 o6 M Qshe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
& T/ l* B( _" p# U% |The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
6 S8 _4 G2 ?! T( J# j: ]the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into e1 e* L* m! y! p
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
' p" V; q) n' Q- wmade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
. e6 e8 A6 P9 S4 J& \4 D; ~T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor & Q( x/ K2 K/ p" y
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The " f: [6 Q( t2 i! O4 R& |3 C" p
woman explained that before the war she and
$ M/ c8 R" i) U+ s) mher husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
) Y8 v4 D: T4 y! B+ }
; z" r c* \' ~* ~9 s2 m7 d# l4 dWhen the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. j; p/ p/ O/ Z4 Q
Her husband was going to follow her the next week.
) k3 V% ^7 s3 f. j; \, C p% r) }2 V9 JHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
1 L& q$ n4 X; f5 C: ?* \0 i/ nhusband or her home again.
" X8 x3 j4 G4 @8 P3 hT he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
# a6 `# _3 C! H4 W) Rbut she made the pastor keep it for the church.
6 O$ r* p. Y$ B5 ^& [: F! t: b) MThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That
5 z! L4 W6 n9 \) Z. S" W0 |was the least he could do. She lived on the other
1 D2 ?0 t$ T. a4 X" x) l& X% y, n# }4 Qside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
0 I- B1 M/ K# N2 ~5 l' [for the day for a housecleaning job.
. l) N) h6 f+ GW hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas . M# a8 j5 L9 Z
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the % y/ R2 Y! }4 f$ a& p$ I S; J
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the
1 ?" ^( s" M- a: U% Vpastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door 5 q/ L4 E/ B" U
and many said that they would return.. ) b$ r0 m" ]/ {: \7 F% u, ?
One older man, whom the pastor recognized
! q+ R% i2 y& R% `/ H5 y2 M, f3 jfrom the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the 3 e H5 A3 N0 n6 J
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
+ u v2 k0 g$ q) Q/ G! L6 vwasn't leaving.
- I- P9 w0 W# }9 N+ d* IThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
* _/ c( ~0 {) ]/ hthe front wall because it was identical to one
& q7 W A! p& S. w, xthat his wife had made years ago when 4 L8 _0 {7 n+ Z
they lived in Austria before the war and how
- R4 ]& y7 C2 z2 E# d) Icould there be two tablecloths so much alike? 4 v' T5 L X3 `2 f
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
- F+ _- y J% ~/ M: lforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was 3 O1 v4 a( T+ l9 _9 `2 m, F
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
. b" a3 U, N0 }$ ]put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home
! O2 `. }3 n6 M6 `" Oagain all the 35 years between.
3 n- d. w/ O9 ~: f3 n P7 wT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
/ R1 S- s8 B* N2 stake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
3 ^5 E3 ` M8 H; c( mIsland and to the same house where the pastor
+ u8 w- ~! {1 |7 e6 ~9 Chad taken the woman three days earlier.
% k: e; \' N Q! cHe helped the man climb the three flights of" I( g8 K& o$ F6 o2 Q% W
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on- k7 e- |7 L; N7 }! R/ v
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas
7 a! L7 f! R/ g: Ereunion he could ever imagine.4 X4 ~4 @" s& Y1 B
