 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason. |# Y, P# z$ p; U, P8 \

1 J# B4 i+ M( U8 S; f The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned j4 I \6 ~" `
to their first ministry, to reopen a church
' z( o5 w; ]; V* E) kin suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October ' M/ m, M# \6 Y, V% y) o# e$ N
excited about their opportunities. When they saw
) J! J1 r% {1 V, {their church, it was very run down and needed
% e0 u" v5 o8 a+ pmuch work. They set a goal to have everything $ F8 {+ A" D& @' u3 [
done in time to have their first service
6 ?! I% P0 W* z- N% ^2 s9 non Christmas Eve. : G$ u( p5 C$ L! K& o' Y- P* y& Q" `
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
3 o& \5 ? y$ E! Npainting, etc, and on December 18
8 Y% D ~0 y8 o5 H" x# Cwere ahead of schedule and just about finished.
+ J" j% C' W) w yO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving 9 G& [! R' J* I2 Y: |
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. ( j. G* l4 y4 k r2 `1 P2 M/ d
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church./ F3 t/ E: J# b8 K' F
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had
* B$ s( j2 Y% e& I6 X. k4 i; uleaked, causing a large area of plaster about
2 r3 G& x( t! A3 F9 l& L& A20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall 7 Z4 O8 m6 O E" F2 T4 C
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
( v) P/ w6 t& z2 M8 ~beginning about head high.
0 f5 C, q) v8 n0 }T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, ' `1 t* H0 f$ @2 G
and not knowing what else to do but postpone
3 W3 T- v; C6 |# R1 N0 H p: G* lthe Christmas Eve service, headed home.
5 I( H& l0 q* F) |, FOn the way he noticed that a local business was " r, L" O8 o) u) R: L1 Z( w% Z
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he
- S6 e% j7 i$ V( Y9 xstopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
+ ?" X/ s3 M% H* h& E# ?' Mhandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth ( s, U/ B5 D- [8 p3 U! q! j) ?2 J
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross 8 H" [" `3 k! D# G
embroidered right in the center. It was just
9 N% f: G% i3 Y9 C7 H
7 u, W8 ]5 @4 i/ ?
& o `$ }3 q8 X) Q; l- m% b
0 j" c' d7 r- A9 ?( @5 k
1 o2 t6 U' K7 V# L
/ k6 x% R* b: \0 x4 y" Q5 G4 S! H4 T! I) z5 C2 t' Z. V! v
the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. 5 _$ N$ B( v" M$ H9 m$ v
B y this time it had started to snow. An older , }+ g+ N# }6 [, Q3 t9 g
woman running from the opposite direction was
8 _, v) q: u3 K3 n% x+ qtrying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
' e F( G9 S0 \" e& v2 P3 jinvited her to wait in the warm church for 9 l; D- z1 K% g( [. L7 d3 Y3 |
the next bus 45 minutes later.

$ M+ G3 x8 q, L$ B' v! k5 w% RShe sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
4 u* @% M3 t4 X5 M7 `' L; Y! Vwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
2 r" |! S/ }- |" f) F5 z4 u3 ?up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor 9 }. F# n( k6 N+ U6 V
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. , R; _- ^$ J$ l1 a" I' @ A3 ?5 b
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center' ^$ U* k* o4 T! ^
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"6 y. E; Z" w8 h6 H
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" : I' }4 j+ f9 G* e. e
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check1 V& f8 z( J1 ?: T) C
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
: P" _$ [0 _3 c, v& U7 F( V! L! Git there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
4 @0 f/ n. o$ b) r: e! Umade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
4 h( U! K( y$ zT he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
, d# C' q1 w9 e, [told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The 1 }+ R3 W& w; {8 L7 R% Q# ]( s/ [
woman explained that before the war she and + z0 `9 z! n4 w2 g. I* u
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria . # _+ o) V& V; `4 f6 M1 h' ~$ m
0 @! U) u2 a5 S$ J8 y+ P4 x
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
% H' D5 N( G- i* M HHer husband was going to follow her the next week.
) X/ d7 i, W2 _He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
, H2 j' q A8 b& v9 ]husband or her home again. ( p) |* ?( Z7 H
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
1 E9 f+ X0 ]4 ], L* x. Rbut she made the pastor keep it for the church.8 m7 B; h8 Z6 k) f9 Y5 P
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That
# A/ K [ I! V" I# f' lwas the least he could do. She lived on the other7 U/ f0 y# X) y3 v2 Z, p/ `
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn ; G9 [( x" a8 I' j1 v6 |
for the day for a housecleaning job.
2 C8 [9 y. J$ T7 ^0 g$ ^ YW hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas ) R5 T6 m) j+ R3 g- C
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the 5 M f( v' f) ~4 v8 G/ g
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the
5 Q4 {; I$ m8 M0 l( Bpastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
; Q0 A; \3 U; aand many said that they would return.. ! j- l5 D7 l4 B: Z3 y# T" _
One older man, whom the pastor recognized 5 s! D4 B8 [# q! }- o
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
& Y, `2 L g; h$ v' Rpews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he # [6 e- M+ e' s* j; Z7 ?
wasn't leaving. ( C& u. g. T9 B7 R1 j
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on 1 d% ?" d7 U* i
the front wall because it was identical to one " r: @; L5 S, M8 ?% m5 k
that his wife had made years ago when : \5 v0 s" N' G/ d& d
they lived in Austria before the war and how
5 {" S0 l+ `; b8 tcould there be two tablecloths so much alike?
8 f. G/ U* _7 c$ O, ?9 f3 {6 }. I% hH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
; D; I5 `9 z3 l* p+ F. Xforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
9 U4 P. W5 b, Msupposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
2 f1 y( x; f1 M* n( [# aput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home& R2 W3 l, i7 R
again all the 35 years between.
" G5 E4 d Z* L' H0 n' DT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to ( M4 F8 f- P/ P+ M- S7 J
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten 6 ^9 [% W. w3 y: ]6 l. p5 A0 s( H
Island and to the same house where the pastor
R* U$ q# {$ d V: Shad taken the woman three days earlier. 4 M# Q' M& z! O
He helped the man climb the three flights of
7 R1 x# ]( u6 Z3 m0 Y0 U. F4 Mstairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
$ c) E: A- n& E: y- B Nthe door and he saw the greatest Christmas ; C: d; F5 j1 K% A! \0 G9 W$ @
reunion he could ever imagine.

promises are true, and when we give Him all our

difficult at best, just remember I'm here 1 z/ n9 O5 ^. w4 K& H7 R
