 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason# I0 X2 ?- f g1 }/ d5 N+ x

1 l2 v4 y+ x6 z- F The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned , a; \5 Z, H# z% s! R8 q% r9 e
to their first ministry, to reopen a church b! M& X' q5 `7 v Z( Q7 O
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October ! }0 p& F5 B2 n; b0 K$ ^3 _: o7 f
excited about their opportunities. When they saw * n, V: g. ]; |4 i. Y
their church, it was very run down and needed
( K7 |4 F) E% c! l- rmuch work. They set a goal to have everything ; m3 _7 r+ Y+ n# x0 p. H
done in time to have their first service ' H8 A& n( o+ u8 s8 z/ C
on Christmas Eve. % C4 G/ }% T3 X/ ?
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
! \. B" n/ b' c( npainting, etc, and on December 18
6 y2 i- w6 B( J" s O, \were ahead of schedule and just about finished.
2 O; J( r5 `/ ]; rO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving 4 N( K8 V0 z; Y) z2 G
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
' a( e& @5 P2 T X# w- H O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
& [# X: Q* n' b' q6 KHis heart sank when he saw that the roof had
# P p9 o5 w" ^& S8 fleaked, causing a large area of plaster about
% E; U: O8 C. ?$ O( K: I, S; U/ u: K) @20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall 0 b I% s& C" B: ]' S% p, V
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, ' K& E- u! E. K1 _6 A Q# C7 c l2 W
beginning about head high.
0 w& i+ Z% g& T' ]1 {' _T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, 7 c9 [6 f- `1 x; y
and not knowing what else to do but postpone
" d* h0 U; L* d1 kthe Christmas Eve service, headed home.
1 }6 B8 q; z4 M) oOn the way he noticed that a local business was - A! Q$ Y3 P9 L5 [$ O
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he
8 e5 A% H$ q3 h ?4 Ystopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, 1 N6 f' r0 V6 e; K9 @, S. r
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
! y1 Y7 `; r7 ]% O0 ^( zwith exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
5 d* W. O" `# e( a. wembroidered right in the center. It was just
' g# a4 h8 `& B4 { 6 I. k& ?0 h6 m& ~ K$ m7 P) j
) R2 w" }/ o" U: z: `, G5 ^ ) S- z3 M# E. e6 V/ G. h5 d9 I3 `
; R. |9 [- h S& q8 Y+ L Z " Z- t9 C. ~* k. w, C
+ N0 K3 r8 ?: H
the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
: d0 T2 P+ r/ H5 x6 G& I* ]7 P8 {B y this time it had started to snow. An older + |. @2 S+ q9 g0 }/ W$ J' G( U
woman running from the opposite direction was
5 s9 L' b3 |; ~; f0 qtrying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
0 Y2 J+ v6 U, Q: X, x7 T( G$ \- pinvited her to wait in the warm church for
* T: b6 H9 c' `2 M6 f( b zthe next bus 45 minutes later.
' G0 e5 G% Y4 ?: u7 G7 f: ?5 t
1 f4 b1 _0 z7 C7 W9 CShe sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor 0 p# S7 z" O1 N7 G* b; O! M
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
! X Y3 t. h( W+ m6 uup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor % p& a4 j9 O) v; G) y( G8 n: @
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. 4 u+ I4 R4 P& n- T" V2 p
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
* v+ J9 Z$ I, h2 G" B" {* Paisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor," o! d% ]7 R! [% i& m8 j: B: j6 J/ w
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" ( n4 Z9 k# h0 e r- \. C
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check; e$ O9 y& `1 K0 A! e& x
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into8 T" o" a; ^" n
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had + p0 e4 \# y, j# d
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
* A6 ]. p. b5 y0 z/ c5 ?3 f6 mT he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor q, v6 ^5 r2 c7 [! h/ X/ k
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
$ t( h1 U. K" K) z% zwoman explained that before the war she and
. s' C q1 F# }- M) Bher husband were well-to-do people in Austria . ! u; U* s) @2 C, A' p2 v% A
9 ^& L. W3 U* Y! V Y! V; ~
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
- a d: F" X# l0 O: DHer husband was going to follow her the next week.
, }& S1 }7 F D# J- H7 h) B. ^He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her 6 ^8 h# s$ R( o7 L) S* H8 E
husband or her home again. , l/ k: m6 P( C; b. u$ P# T5 N2 r
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;9 T+ r( B' V6 ]. i' F* g9 @( j( K
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.: `4 k2 m [( ?. c" _' @
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That8 ~2 u8 \4 M# ^6 a+ a! p
was the least he could do. She lived on the other
% P* z2 b! S; N/ D9 V& `- |5 ]+ a, z$ @side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn * X5 @0 S5 `/ {5 S; K
for the day for a housecleaning job./ Y. h$ H: g! N3 y5 f4 {( L. f
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
! _! R# F) f; O; W3 V+ [0 HEve. The church was almost full. The music and the : w% s2 k3 s4 q" W9 N8 e
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the
c! D7 R2 t) b# q% h6 Bpastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
2 P& L- y& E. e4 b8 ~/ g D& x8 Rand many said that they would return.. 3 b6 @: Y; J# \( n6 X
One older man, whom the pastor recognized + I, L" U" |) \+ E8 }
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
% g9 R6 X8 Y, ]; A0 B6 X! epews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he / m( \ C' ?: K( k( \7 W* r ]. z
wasn't leaving.
0 Y' _% s1 }9 l, ~The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on $ s) y9 p C, p. Y, J0 W
the front wall because it was identical to one
$ |! n% m4 ~" O2 |- N l; Othat his wife had made years ago when & W0 g! d0 B d! W) C, f2 v8 B
they lived in Austria before the war and how
% w( x; T$ C0 d& @+ J! L( ncould there be two tablecloths so much alike? - }% O C" C1 f# [) l8 J
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
- A, @4 T8 o" a' q) q: N* kforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was + J" R# p( \; n R6 l. v- @
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and3 K Y& o* \* p# S
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home
$ A+ I6 h2 d/ `4 V' E. N- Oagain all the 35 years between.
7 x/ O2 [& }! \6 nT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
: A9 j2 P- Q: Z2 Y, d) W$ S' u- p0 ztake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten + y( K! I( h: O% x& w' K. G
Island and to the same house where the pastor
& i- e8 J! v" ]$ thad taken the woman three days earlier. " ?/ M/ Z) u6 G% [
He helped the man climb the three flights of
. {# \1 l% x" N# Cstairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on+ r( y5 ^) G& h$ q+ a- g+ H
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas
j' h2 b# p3 b& t; A( b8 J# ereunion he could ever imagine., x! O/ [% T+ u/ B9 y+ C
