 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason$ k4 O. g* }/ z6 X2 f+ [. v

The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned ' Z6 p- _$ ?" J& ~! m9 ?
to their first ministry, to reopen a church . s. Q. s; K' n0 G
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
+ t- P. }! p4 Zexcited about their opportunities. When they saw 6 p: c, w; A ]% ]% x. h" d9 P6 X
their church, it was very run down and needed 3 V9 @9 K$ Q" p, Y1 N5 v! c
much work. They set a goal to have everything * m* J# A3 W: B( d& S/ j9 @
done in time to have their first service 6 ^" P T; ~" _/ P* ]
on Christmas Eve. , m/ ?4 d8 {5 _3 ~0 p
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
0 K! J3 \$ A; N, f6 d4 H+ j+ Upainting, etc, and on December 18 8 r1 N2 k8 ^% D" J; n* u
were ahead of schedule and just about finished.
1 d% V' b7 _7 H7 X# ^8 jO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
- d! M* U- c; T m" Erainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. : P8 {* F( d. A- s4 m- A
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
\- o6 X; w1 \- C m8 D, z# HHis heart sank when he saw that the roof had+ U4 _9 R4 I! i1 z4 v. A$ z3 }9 ^
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about . K0 F( ?+ A2 L/ S2 ~, N
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall P* r) [4 {$ B* t& v r
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
0 P0 J" w1 G& U6 pbeginning about head high.
. e9 s/ o3 {* b* BT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
: h0 e8 H* u5 R1 Uand not knowing what else to do but postpone
( H8 s6 z0 x- Ethe Christmas Eve service, headed home.
! U3 g1 u5 k' ]8 ^" o0 v3 ?3 ]On the way he noticed that a local business was
: W1 [' E- @ F9 @* P+ n% Ahaving a flea market type sale for charity, so he & i( H" r3 [3 r0 U" s, X4 `
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, 5 a5 c2 r) g/ h0 H0 G/ c; O" g' V1 O" D
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth - Y0 d% r0 f( v$ K
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross ( s( w* \% x" C5 H3 T! q
embroidered right in the center. It was just
9 f b# i* }. x
$ D3 F5 K, ^% V4 e; h. a. }/ K
" ^0 W6 b! x+ s0 k# y
; F% W y% T J
1 M: B( l9 k3 }" M" \5 R 3 g: C( N+ B& I0 [5 Z* h& k# |
9 _4 p' h8 S3 W1 Q" l
the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. 6 E+ F- v4 H, A* f; O* o
B y this time it had started to snow. An older
. @5 u" e- y" z( a0 Ywoman running from the opposite direction was
, z+ j/ A+ p% Q' a2 Xtrying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
: P+ B/ |+ j) `, Y: D5 {invited her to wait in the warm church for 1 A5 R7 T5 L9 h% a1 a
the next bus 45 minutes later.
0 a: D0 |+ q2 j" d- T. Z% X' ^3 W) f6 o
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor 3 n& O- p3 w4 L$ D: ?- F
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put 3 d6 @) U5 |7 b' k
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
) i/ U; N0 p8 F' t, icould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
- V0 z4 N% A6 m4 m& y$ N* vT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center1 U7 z0 S# b- p) y: D
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
N7 `( Z& ~ b; I! r' Bshe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
8 q& i0 `( P- m2 yThe pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
3 f- B' q0 @' o3 wthe lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into6 F/ n& Y# l0 f a! ?! B" M. q
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
+ l2 [$ o, t4 i. T+ i% y7 @made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . - s1 z G9 p( `& K5 Q
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
' c4 ~4 h( u- X; G: btold how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
! _; R* d8 ]6 k* Ewoman explained that before the war she and
8 @; s0 u: l: _8 p) M eher husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
% t4 m/ o4 ]( x w! j
; T. i5 @1 \! {7 m% a+ i& k7 FWhen the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. 4 k3 `8 M& p7 K+ I
Her husband was going to follow her the next week. 8 M( |/ A; }: j0 v" v1 A2 y
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
( O! d$ K: h/ ?0 P& t- X8 xhusband or her home again.
. a" K L, d! ?; x5 cT he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;4 Y; y" a2 w, S, [' x
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.
, I5 n' I# w! i" qThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That
5 ^& ^, v2 p+ @1 O& _ ]9 B7 i: n; \was the least he could do. She lived on the other+ `; s, ^* w3 h2 R- w' c; v
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
9 T- O# e; x4 ]% p! B! w$ m2 ?for the day for a housecleaning job.2 j( [* S5 o R
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas # \5 P+ m. e' j6 I* D* @1 ~
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the % G9 d" M- b2 P% J, {+ I
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the
. `% y' X) T1 w. _pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door ( H( Q$ x3 a# O {. s" H
and many said that they would return.. . S. O; p3 u8 C
One older man, whom the pastor recognized
+ }7 h; X" Q2 I1 Y% tfrom the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the ) A1 S6 n$ j2 H1 ~" A1 y
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he 6 S& @, _, S8 y) d
wasn't leaving.
. F; L7 d4 M- vThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on " }' i0 T1 L! D0 O) z) \/ e
the front wall because it was identical to one
7 U! i# f' ^2 ~) m" uthat his wife had made years ago when ! k5 \- l3 l5 R, y+ I' M# k) ^
they lived in Austria before the war and how
4 w+ _9 [' H: K7 I. Ocould there be two tablecloths so much alike?
' Y$ b7 z3 ]7 d$ g2 a5 lH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
, ^& \: v( H1 x* oforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was 0 _" u1 O3 @- V+ X% w$ y
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and; X0 w9 I! D: S% z! d) x3 v
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home4 v0 i' Z* t' G" Q9 S( a" {
again all the 35 years between.
" P* ]* n& ?9 D, B5 P5 GT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to : q+ q" L9 E6 f" u3 w3 p2 s; t
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
3 |8 \4 c" @2 a& r% p9 O( e6 gIsland and to the same house where the pastor
1 S6 J& {' [8 V8 A) U6 b, Bhad taken the woman three days earlier. 4 x8 Y& J2 g! R; `8 A9 `
He helped the man climb the three flights of
7 R. n" M( Z8 y& f1 estairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on+ i# _6 a" v7 i% O, M# ^
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas
% N) @& E- n x8 T/ `7 E8 ~: Ereunion he could ever imagine.

S o when the road you're traveling seems
9 z; L# f8 f( m3 H$ Z) l, N# ]( d2 }difficult at best, just remember I'm here
