 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

7 D& p- l& }; {7 j The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned
( s% ]9 l7 |, @to their first ministry, to reopen a church - L' c* |% F. H% t
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October * h9 m3 e0 j5 D' F u, [
excited about their opportunities. When they saw
7 v/ T6 ]+ N; P( {8 b/ |their church, it was very run down and needed
" ]6 Y/ }0 v, k7 Z/ Zmuch work. They set a goal to have everything " E6 [, o9 `) F7 u% P% j( W; U3 t
done in time to have their first service % l l8 `8 C7 U1 l; Q4 B5 { H
on Christmas Eve. 9 |( ]3 k# r9 Z) e$ @
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
& v0 k$ U F) {. [$ B. \painting, etc, and on December 18 4 z8 t# l6 t% F! U$ y1 \) `' z
were ahead of schedule and just about finished. ; y! P6 Q8 V7 F9 q: \7 |
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
4 ~) e, r5 D. w7 O# g/ Hrainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
; b, y3 L: a" k/ { O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
7 g# X: S4 t* g* l' I' R( {His heart sank when he saw that the roof had
; g1 u2 d) G3 zleaked, causing a large area of plaster about
E, U! f) H5 z3 F/ z, Q8 T; \' O20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
4 C( C5 x, n( ]$ cof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, 2 g. I# F+ b) D; ]
beginning about head high. . D3 U! U7 D' S* C
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, - o/ u9 N# \: O4 d
and not knowing what else to do but postpone
' C$ ^( h6 c7 Zthe Christmas Eve service, headed home.
0 T; L( W5 j$ O/ O: E zOn the way he noticed that a local business was 4 g: V- ?, B, g
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he / | R! O6 b$ D1 X
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
/ |% F- U, W8 H) lhandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
$ S6 j) N: b/ g1 d% ]with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
9 P; V# V. h0 I, Rembroidered right in the center. It was just 6 Q; u+ U$ ~ e9 \
7 W7 y% }- y. k$ @8 \* Z8 l
0 M: j8 }# r* e+ l9 C. w
, m3 R' a: W& Y ]( \' W) ]6 _, U: E* R* I5 R( w' ?9 o2 h
* q- q: f* r7 }, G5 g$ U8 n4 v, X( R, T' d" @' Y0 M- S6 g
the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
' B( w( r+ i( L3 WB y this time it had started to snow. An older 0 F: d% C) C/ s3 y
woman running from the opposite direction was ; W, J7 U# h5 a( J* B% M) m+ l. ~
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor + @8 E3 ? \- ?% B
invited her to wait in the warm church for
1 o3 E2 v! |( J+ Vthe next bus 45 minutes later.
5 j8 A, K4 r2 q' x& }# g
! @3 h: `% q. S( e/ y/ ZShe sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
; S2 b. n6 Z0 _while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put : L ?7 y- @: y% n
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor , @2 M! W( P! R# y* T8 e; L3 ^
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
8 J2 L, B" d) _( e! o1 {2 tT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center) W" H7 l& F3 L
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"4 b2 o% O# N0 u8 S
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
" m& d7 f# G; {The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check* E/ U- T" |( m) R0 v
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into* ?2 N/ T7 o8 E! A( x- N
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had % P4 H+ t! r, n
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . # y, f6 |5 [& s6 d( O
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
/ H. V- h: U1 |) k4 c4 _told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
/ R H9 Y& z& G) G5 `woman explained that before the war she and
# j/ V, W$ t' @' M; A+ T" \0 bher husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
* u0 u3 `7 t. @& D# [4 V8 B- P
; c5 p! b: V J" [, tWhen the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
# a$ l3 s% @' r d& R9 d- C4 n' DHer husband was going to follow her the next week.
2 k0 {$ [: z% |/ xHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her ! N( B4 I1 ], T$ u1 `
husband or her home again. 0 Y' p+ u. `) }1 p S
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
+ t Y! l/ g( e9 tbut she made the pastor keep it for the church.' u+ U" Q! A# W( G+ ~4 E
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That
7 `) h+ \ |) A4 _2 ]1 Jwas the least he could do. She lived on the other, }9 P' L/ S. c' b6 x
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
; F, M" ]3 G( i2 [4 f- M4 l' Yfor the day for a housecleaning job.6 e$ k5 x, x6 l9 g. p- T
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas : i( f& V6 v) E6 j
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the ' K4 y p* E. H
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the 5 i6 @& O. V( U* n) W
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
% o' |+ `. a' N$ ^* e! Xand many said that they would return.. / W1 z- V4 J. B2 d! V! J
One older man, whom the pastor recognized ! G2 U! G! ]: _
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the ' q4 \1 t% c) G3 d. h2 R) _1 U
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
# s' [0 {* g7 S3 ywasn't leaving. 1 p6 T" f* U. b2 O+ A7 v( e
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
* w; O ?2 \& E2 S2 H# _" Cthe front wall because it was identical to one - N: f: A# X" j. q! _
that his wife had made years ago when / w K0 \" W5 C# j) R/ f# A
they lived in Austria before the war and how
4 J4 P4 o$ M; E- T- ^3 c& K' Hcould there be two tablecloths so much alike? % Q2 L. [3 {+ c8 ?8 t6 B$ I
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
5 `& q1 b/ {' N& Fforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was P/ ^/ T' \; U$ J4 W S/ e/ s
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
8 h4 r6 P9 p( s% B4 r0 D; ~/ w7 Qput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home
6 f( [/ r* P% i) L' a. Kagain all the 35 years between. ) N- g* F; V1 w: M2 E
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to $ o% ~7 R! ] v4 k
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten - o; q* v7 m/ z& k% {8 W
Island and to the same house where the pastor 4 z: c: F% P. L" d- M+ k w2 p' y
had taken the woman three days earlier.
7 ?$ s3 }/ o5 @He helped the man climb the three flights of
& S" z( U+ g5 C8 w' Ostairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
0 V, q. c! D+ Athe door and he saw the greatest Christmas
y3 ?7 \( U0 {7 z, ^6 \- qreunion he could ever imagine.

promises are true, and when we give Him all our
