5 x7 x- g4 d! _4 g+ ~( G8 E. Y* _ The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned
8 n# j" N! M% O' V0 D h, Nto their first ministry, to reopen a church " j5 a3 g4 G2 w
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October ! ?" Z4 V8 w% K( Y$ C Q! W
excited about their opportunities. When they saw , _! B: m5 |) a
their church, it was very run down and needed
, h, L) H% C3 O& \/ b& W5 d8 vmuch work. They set a goal to have everything ( W& W/ ~. |% v0 f. Y; M
done in time to have their first service 3 ` O$ W! B# b
on Christmas Eve.
. M8 H& }. \( Q' j% k5 \T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,. P4 }5 R% s3 p3 M2 r5 h: h+ @
painting, etc, and on December 18
, I2 p/ C$ N+ v% Mwere ahead of schedule and just about finished.
6 a/ o3 E7 W+ Y$ g2 LO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
! [' @0 T+ `% p, urainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. 6 w0 J! w" ]8 H" U/ H
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
: O6 ?3 u/ Z' `8 j% U9 [' j& lHis heart sank when he saw that the roof had a9 x6 y3 i" o% V! f
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about ; i6 p5 N" @# O/ A
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
7 H' I2 J; h1 m/ [2 E. `of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
6 d* N- c, f- F, V! m: K5 O( ]/ @beginning about head high. & ^7 c2 b0 @) K
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, . z9 J4 J) C+ A! l4 t. G, a: k
and not knowing what else to do but postpone % r3 [- g* P" s2 h" K @& v- @
the Christmas Eve service, headed home.
* {- Y3 k$ L) i3 wOn the way he noticed that a local business was $ |" j1 S0 c" }. e) r
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he
7 [- v' J c. O! C7 m7 c* z& rstopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, ( c8 h+ H+ Z8 e
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
! v5 t/ F }' \4 i% `: V# ?$ c( I7 [with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
7 D7 U0 V& L0 r0 aembroidered right in the center. It was just 9 Z3 L) ^$ Z% n( w- m6 j' k8 Z& F
8 J3 z/ \. T5 p+ {! } e
$ n0 g+ K6 N7 e, T: s0 |# A- p+ H
- J9 J" H" e! E- H9 s" Q
- o$ P( D1 S2 S O$ N q ! r. `! A" y& n: ^
- ?5 R' P% {0 T7 Nthe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
5 `" l6 |" a) S; L2 q2 pB y this time it had started to snow. An older 6 h' e$ a3 D) s4 [* r& {1 N3 k
woman running from the opposite direction was
3 @8 J# I& S% ~$ x. ^% O# D, [4 {trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
( R& U6 d1 u: r9 n# O0 a' S9 a7 xinvited her to wait in the warm church for ( f( V, U( g! A" n% d% O" p
the next bus 45 minutes later.
5 Z% m/ {0 H" ~6 V s, ^6 L4 R# y/ M8 k: v3 K$ m( V
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
0 D. \: b4 g* D+ z, W" dwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put ( Z8 i* j. k2 `* C1 f4 V
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
k; D, J" O! @9 l+ C$ W9 T, Dcould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
; x- _* S2 o% d+ B# [' k% PT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
1 P5 Q3 J0 M8 z9 Yaisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"3 N* }+ O G* F8 H
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
- a' {' A. ^: u, }% W' o9 OThe pastor explained. The woman asked him to check: z+ S$ r# e' y; B( _8 H
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
0 A# V: L+ \9 ?& z; q. Iit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
?! J0 w* _: b. m- g, p. J8 }$ ~3 Ymade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
: _) T$ p3 D' a. l% r/ P- HT he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
# a- m+ U; g; k8 a" [5 Utold how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
/ t+ M$ P' y3 }. n: F9 ^woman explained that before the war she and # J* U5 q5 b$ x3 P
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
: j6 p" b$ T, q0 f2 {9 n+ `
2 o, V7 ?9 l. l- N ?- B: GWhen the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. . u0 v0 p5 Q8 O5 I3 P) V' X
Her husband was going to follow her the next week.
6 Q' p, t9 R4 o& S- l& xHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
2 G& V4 x; D3 ]* w8 Y% C/ W: |7 y6 o% Vhusband or her home again.
7 A, t) O9 m1 M9 UT he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
" x7 h9 A7 G% N. @# Ibut she made the pastor keep it for the church.
" @: e, Z4 \3 e; |The pastor insisted on driving her home. That
$ j# i4 z! `4 M# i6 ]was the least he could do. She lived on the other
# r# J7 p V+ _& h5 C0 _, Tside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn # o- z% U* T3 S5 u; O) w% X- W
for the day for a housecleaning job.; S$ p% c/ ^3 \
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas $ ?7 Q8 [ A D( Z8 P z. M; R
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the
" t5 |- C; T, D1 l& aspirit were great. At the end of the service, the ' T( J5 o/ a/ D- L& ~! D
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
5 v5 u2 @) i. T) Y0 D' z2 r: ?and many said that they would return.. " i& ?, m4 S6 w' ?( \6 k
One older man, whom the pastor recognized
7 P1 c+ c; N3 u) Z( F5 c- Ofrom the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the 2 i2 s7 W; B1 P
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
$ p Z) f5 X9 T( U% X% jwasn't leaving.
4 y. Z! l/ j; d& ?9 r4 aThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on $ c( k) s+ J1 ]! s- J
the front wall because it was identical to one
3 f! y7 U1 v& s( K' W4 E/ \5 Tthat his wife had made years ago when 4 t7 w, n. D3 f
they lived in Austria before the war and how
, H+ V( v Q/ V, Ncould there be two tablecloths so much alike? % r9 Q% M* K/ d& Z2 f
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
, E8 b3 Y# R8 u/ S- Dforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
# ^. Z, f6 b/ s8 B1 _, L+ l# dsupposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
9 \: w v7 m7 f3 Lput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home( R( g6 t6 p( n
again all the 35 years between. ; S+ [+ S7 Y) p1 L" h
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to , z1 r0 Q0 ]4 n9 Y( ^% r
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
! q, A, p8 i! VIsland and to the same house where the pastor 2 j! {- o ^* S' B
had taken the woman three days earlier.
/ Z/ R; O7 H1 rHe helped the man climb the three flights of; n2 n7 ]" U" W& I7 J
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
; W* K, `3 x8 _7 O# U& |$ v% rthe door and he saw the greatest Christmas
& y: N& d8 v& M( O" P# ~5 i9 Preunion he could ever imagine.# f+ ` m5 d, d. \

difficult at best, just remember I'm here & a% `4 k- [1 f. s: [' B
