 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason g, A% I ?( `$ x* r+ T; f8 T& F

3 @! x2 Y1 N# Z, U0 i1 G The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned ) G& \) L! f2 U. ^* ^
to their first ministry, to reopen a church 9 O1 F3 y- A7 R# H; z, |( ^
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
3 Z7 T2 y* Q* x- Lexcited about their opportunities. When they saw 1 }* X9 [3 ~9 r( n
their church, it was very run down and needed A) t( l# {' W ?8 T+ L
much work. They set a goal to have everything
# Y7 `% G# H* ?" r6 r' Y) t8 Ndone in time to have their first service 5 h6 u8 S. z h) c
on Christmas Eve.
5 h8 W1 Q7 @; g4 Z; y+ p4 ?T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,+ I$ i4 z- }, t/ j# D2 T" C q8 _
painting, etc, and on December 18
, W1 Z8 P( | c2 m& Q& Y" xwere ahead of schedule and just about finished. 0 u( Q$ O4 B& W% a' A Y
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
& v7 k# ~# o8 d. ~1 vrainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
8 i; u* ~% `* h O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
7 b2 Z, i, c( x, x: I) a( x$ z" ^His heart sank when he saw that the roof had8 }3 X( f7 F7 Q
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about
2 Y6 ?) ^" o1 a20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall 2 D: ~! o8 J# T( \& K. O
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
: ~: g3 ~$ K2 d- M0 r0 _9 ybeginning about head high.
7 v" N0 [* g* N+ U7 @; w9 }T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
9 v$ L! z- N. j7 L2 b$ oand not knowing what else to do but postpone # @; n- Y% `& J8 D- }
the Christmas Eve service, headed home.
& V I/ i0 b! qOn the way he noticed that a local business was
2 a/ `) J" I9 ], yhaving a flea market type sale for charity, so he
l, H0 u4 L8 y) s: e; {6 P$ jstopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
# C9 ~- r& r* d0 d' q, Xhandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth " L* |; T, M2 Z* o, w; P3 l! j
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross ) F) q! D, |- C6 v1 v: m" i s
embroidered right in the center. It was just 9 I* e7 }8 Z# e+ V- N+ x) B3 ?
3 D( m5 L# R& r9 x$ n( q1 C1 _& Y# b: M0 v9 G0 T3 v5 w2 D
2 c1 w4 Q. I! A1 S! h [7 i
; A' Y2 ^% g( o2 x % G' o5 ]* V1 t; r' P2 K# m
7 J. o& c) Y( S% K, m2 xthe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
! f% \3 M9 K. f5 C2 vB y this time it had started to snow. An older
$ [- O# f- R8 o+ ^, D" c: Bwoman running from the opposite direction was
$ W' j6 k1 N$ [6 W- mtrying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor . k; E; j G/ s
invited her to wait in the warm church for
( T6 P* @5 S( H, W: h( X. Q: ~the next bus 45 minutes later. / Y" \% L& ~1 c% p" H, G8 M
; W; D) `+ F3 f. E, \1 OShe sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor " ~: m# j# \6 s5 A' g) f
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put 0 Q# C0 e8 u- D0 m1 m" Y
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor $ Z. ]2 ^+ H. b6 p( R2 X" R
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
2 F9 }4 k( X* }. ~: M$ n1 T9 wT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center% r! H( I6 i" @, W! J0 P
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
$ k4 {& ?6 M! W5 _3 R2 g5 ashe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
) t4 `0 ]. P( E) J" z. x" ^) L2 ^The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
* Y1 M) v/ E& h# Dthe lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
) ]2 u0 `+ h, w' @/ wit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
# N6 ?4 ?2 l: l3 wmade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
& {" v+ c" V4 sT he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
3 U* g1 s+ V5 v$ F9 O. ntold how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The p9 ?# j. p: R" ^ j) h( c
woman explained that before the war she and
# @" X( @& x+ i$ B5 J2 Qher husband were well-to-do people in Austria . * R8 X+ |( e3 o- B7 U0 O/ l
: _9 F. c' w8 M; I; XWhen the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. ) @; A, n9 i; o" @
Her husband was going to follow her the next week.
- C# j$ O: t8 h/ KHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her 9 z. Q. @( t3 e9 u0 O# m# H
husband or her home again.
l0 u( p$ e( y' v/ sT he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
8 u5 B) e' I- o# e5 d P8 h# b6 Jbut she made the pastor keep it for the church.2 J$ w. [3 a' I/ q* |
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That
! { D, O6 s) Y$ |" S# K7 T/ Vwas the least he could do. She lived on the other' y& e; z x L1 b) j; }
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
& C9 C. Q! F I; Ufor the day for a housecleaning job.% ?" T/ [7 _, z9 q3 l+ Q
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
$ p K+ }- j' H- a3 |Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the 7 K/ h* E& |/ B8 G: W2 H' P
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the
& `5 j( R+ l- d6 ~) f- [ }pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
! F7 B5 o6 S. Z1 i: F" G' Kand many said that they would return.. % h$ N: d) k/ h4 d
One older man, whom the pastor recognized 2 f& P7 d$ `( G& K' F) G+ J1 X" S& t
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the 1 i( H! f, s6 B
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he ' a) N2 S5 E* r8 }7 b9 h, }
wasn't leaving.
# U5 f( y# ^: y) L, k& r0 p" m1 KThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on ; k7 v# Y3 Y0 r+ m1 J C5 f
the front wall because it was identical to one
+ s! u* k* U1 I$ {4 i7 e8 {% gthat his wife had made years ago when
! h8 @! y$ X8 o9 w; h# E1 xthey lived in Austria before the war and how
; a, D n9 p" \; hcould there be two tablecloths so much alike?
3 s( j- d9 j( t% O7 i7 z- @H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
7 |# y+ r: K1 c& {* @forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
( p' M! Y% \6 a# o2 g. Nsupposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
# v7 E" Z* x" D5 S. I. M, a* E3 v) lput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home4 R! l& B( n. g. S" o
again all the 35 years between. 7 H. g; e% j3 q5 K& C$ K! r
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
, p4 y. A& q# C' l& btake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
! R" k- c# P* ^2 Q% `Island and to the same house where the pastor
1 e$ e% H3 l4 k* Chad taken the woman three days earlier.
# |2 B" J2 E5 {& u) ]He helped the man climb the three flights of( |8 f% {" l) F( s
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
; E8 ?. A, H+ {the door and he saw the greatest Christmas
/ o, z, s; s7 W& Nreunion he could ever imagine.
