 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

; u' N& x1 N' s, a [7 Z The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned 2 @. l/ e" h2 h0 `
to their first ministry, to reopen a church 1 }" x) H8 J. l6 d) {" I
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
, }" `. t- r( G& f5 n: a' N1 Hexcited about their opportunities. When they saw 4 M0 I3 U/ {2 v% @# i; `7 b/ z( w% o
their church, it was very run down and needed
/ c' T' o2 c% A( p1 \% S0 Bmuch work. They set a goal to have everything . l9 {7 o2 K& I2 T! ~3 T: P
done in time to have their first service
4 a7 g$ o- E* T# T6 Oon Christmas Eve. 4 ], m' l! q; g" e0 F/ f3 E* [
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,7 E Y4 L2 r( {: a) L' c" @
painting, etc, and on December 18 2 j/ i# E. T% j4 Z5 o
were ahead of schedule and just about finished. ) {4 q. r5 o) H2 u* r
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving 7 L: ^& a1 a$ Q% |
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
! ~- J5 X! H3 C O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
2 k2 ]0 c; {& z! b& Y# T9 M$ yHis heart sank when he saw that the roof had
9 L4 h5 [! [: n* b- M: vleaked, causing a large area of plaster about
2 ~% S! g+ Y3 C+ e20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
7 [4 W# y' d4 R4 W! q# S" N; e- _of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, 1 M7 d2 t7 Q9 a5 r) [
beginning about head high.
) [+ c- T+ O* F7 v6 `: d' D8 PT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, 5 k2 a G' S2 G w i
and not knowing what else to do but postpone $ |4 g! g* ]. B/ P8 s
the Christmas Eve service, headed home.
0 i' M4 i( k( mOn the way he noticed that a local business was
" g+ ]- n5 _/ \having a flea market type sale for charity, so he : p5 |6 w; K, ~0 {) y. G
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, & ^- t4 q' G/ n/ E: u) |& L3 W& ]
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth 5 e0 h0 M: H0 v4 P) v4 |
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
) |# y7 w2 S0 o4 ^- ~# ~embroidered right in the center. It was just
' m3 \8 V$ K3 h$ n5 c: ^
, a$ T H8 |0 E( x. v' I9 h. `+ ?0 g3 p4 ^
. }3 K) i: |5 _3 r, e9 |# p( G1 c
' m% g3 O/ Q; I0 @% A / A% K! l4 B2 e, A. a8 z6 T

the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
+ f$ C- n8 S6 s" U: eB y this time it had started to snow. An older 4 n+ B2 u8 |! Y8 K7 I( N% \
woman running from the opposite direction was
) a9 B: Z; |: k) {/ etrying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
( Q5 K8 I1 |$ i% q* {invited her to wait in the warm church for
2 p* N" b# a7 Fthe next bus 45 minutes later.
0 H+ v0 P( m' ]" }& ]! ~" u7 \- W2 C) V5 X
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor f# H7 u' v/ P4 I/ p' U
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put 5 x" H( F# X2 d; |
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor , R( W9 w; `* r, e# P. ]9 G
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. Z$ D; T7 U! _. C9 ^. |
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center. ~; X M# R. b1 v: v' I
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"" v) m0 o- L! {0 O: [" O9 u
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" - s$ W! [) C, A' E% q0 S
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
6 Q" ^- F, _4 \the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into- ~* D9 h( C0 B0 O; t z
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had m: i( K" l) O) C8 J
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
+ j6 o- |5 M9 P, sT he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
6 y% H$ ~: v# @. h2 I! ttold how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
$ V8 \( X) v" }0 `! r: @woman explained that before the war she and
/ P! V( r) b: m4 O; gher husband were well-to-do people in Austria . " n& P, J. `0 |& U
9 ^( J1 w+ j R8 ^# r" i, P
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. . d& N( P) [. D* P# @
Her husband was going to follow her the next week.
1 Y9 w) h" r1 RHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
2 X8 Q* }4 Y3 G4 Ehusband or her home again. * D, C8 [! K) B
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;9 P T: e6 z# i# I7 S4 O
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.
* f i( z: q( F4 f' G; a4 g5 {) |The pastor insisted on driving her home. That
# y" e/ K) s, u( s% @$ xwas the least he could do. She lived on the other: G% s1 I( p- A' m
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn # P" q2 w/ W0 J" U" v9 Y
for the day for a housecleaning job./ x( I4 N8 n9 v1 Z0 }
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
' D4 ^0 P: S8 Y+ D/ @. x \Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the 5 O! e; x4 X7 I& E
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the
, K& e1 j* Y$ _& kpastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
4 r7 Z. ?* O) T4 R) Rand many said that they would return..
+ S P; o1 \3 ]7 w/ YOne older man, whom the pastor recognized 9 n' [# B$ @4 C3 n5 [# T. D( m
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
( Q: W% [$ G# p0 Bpews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he + D5 _! o! g3 o# U# z$ F
wasn't leaving.
8 d! \# l9 K' A! ZThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
8 f( A, f' g3 Nthe front wall because it was identical to one 6 G5 t. q' w m0 k: |# O0 o
that his wife had made years ago when ( O+ M9 I0 P2 h; M0 s
they lived in Austria before the war and how
/ S- {) @* i6 |could there be two tablecloths so much alike?
" K' A4 S# |. X! CH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he ( |% ~1 Q/ a5 A( w+ n
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was ) e P) t, X V& t' [
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and" K% @& b% y7 s" S$ W3 D6 K" Q
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home
! ^8 s$ G, g# a- C8 w6 R( x" y, Magain all the 35 years between. + P, o' T1 R; C( V A( s! G
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to . r h8 j% _% g
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
; f k2 F0 D/ A) C7 RIsland and to the same house where the pastor
$ M5 m+ s" C6 o6 L# J! Fhad taken the woman three days earlier.
: c" Z1 j6 ~8 _/ K1 B* N9 DHe helped the man climb the three flights of3 |5 I3 O' x" m3 [: ?. P
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on0 K+ h |* @. k/ w1 s5 j4 v+ w; R9 h
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas
* i/ w6 z: r8 D% Jreunion he could ever imagine.

promises are true, and when we give Him all our

difficult at best, just remember I'm here
