 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned * P* u2 ]( x( f% B
to their first ministry, to reopen a church 4 X) H4 _% r0 U6 h0 ~) Y
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
/ A3 m/ \2 q6 |& D3 Q# ^excited about their opportunities. When they saw 2 M' P# w2 n5 n% w' T' G; e
their church, it was very run down and needed
* b3 f" h w6 D0 k' ?much work. They set a goal to have everything $ q8 m: E+ }6 J2 _2 V
done in time to have their first service
* k' k; o% V4 bon Christmas Eve. . L$ E, J q- ], O9 q7 B
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
% |# M$ \- m2 U+ ?3 \8 fpainting, etc, and on December 18
8 `: w3 t2 S. d# Q' ?were ahead of schedule and just about finished. ! U# V* Y4 g. O3 ^4 K
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving 7 o. v9 k. P$ s# r
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
6 G8 P0 Z) i' Y9 u) h: A' l O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.( Y9 T, c. Z* S" X
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had- k: o! s. N" a
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about
9 D5 C3 J: ^5 V20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall ; Y+ P v, j9 }
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, l7 I; y1 v" B( n8 |
beginning about head high. 2 H$ k5 J# f9 n) `5 S) G5 O7 g
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, , a+ p1 o: N" K+ K
and not knowing what else to do but postpone % c$ A1 F% b& _- t! l) v
the Christmas Eve service, headed home.
% b& l7 x- L# H" x4 n1 _ COn the way he noticed that a local business was : j! U1 P7 f! ]# u X; y% ~
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he
* S% ^: v, [6 ^stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
7 B6 k* V: X) i: C- n) z c( j, Xhandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
( Y6 g; T( s# Xwith exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross ; e/ n0 M o$ K8 [" _
embroidered right in the center. It was just
1 o) [ s- G4 _, f 6 y0 O0 O6 O" ~" m
7 u; b2 B* [, ~# L- a% {2 H
. b& t1 V+ Q; u" {- L
( A' a7 R# {. y5 Y4 j+ V
; r+ x- ^6 C# c! I1 U1 U2 i8 f
& ~9 N% ?0 E2 g( y" I6 [. _+ U# zthe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. % n; D+ G) U ]; E
B y this time it had started to snow. An older
# I1 L0 B8 O; s, k) K5 O! uwoman running from the opposite direction was 0 E4 |* [& `2 `6 Q% G! ~
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor : L8 ~" Y6 H8 y' J4 x4 m
invited her to wait in the warm church for # D9 ^8 o: [7 a7 V7 _, |
the next bus 45 minutes later. , a( a* Q% I% O+ A7 X
2 B5 g2 x X- i# Z9 D8 H) ~6 H
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor ' x' J( s) g) E5 b* t
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put 9 b5 D$ ~7 V2 u E
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
. W7 C: l6 V& M! T# h- Lcould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. 9 Z9 R% |* T; E" m) C& W6 I
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center& C5 f1 Q: L+ o
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
+ P9 ~1 U/ E& p" |% r4 Oshe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
; Q }1 z; n2 B5 l* O& DThe pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
/ e6 G. z0 Z' }& r9 C9 O r, k/ _the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
4 Z/ Q$ }- Y- A% Q Iit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
2 s; {( |) T% cmade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . / ^5 A2 K0 L" `6 r Q' F5 r
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
) V$ R V% A5 D% K# n( Stold how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The 0 q/ X: e* s* p- m2 H+ Z
woman explained that before the war she and
- [- d |& C1 T& v7 v; Fher husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
: q2 N( T# x. v- E
, Z( U& O s% }# s/ DWhen the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
* T2 f8 `2 g0 @) m& B5 D8 wHer husband was going to follow her the next week. 0 S2 R; T0 p: Z4 E
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
W8 E$ b9 k( _ Ahusband or her home again. : }1 h6 R" [: G0 G7 E. S
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
( z+ p* G3 s: B8 k2 \but she made the pastor keep it for the church.5 a( {( U \- v9 {. m; O
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That! f C2 }- N& ]- B d% Y6 g
was the least he could do. She lived on the other8 H: v6 g$ N. j9 M' N7 R, z
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn ! z9 Q1 D1 z3 P. n( D2 G
for the day for a housecleaning job.
3 n5 T' o/ Z5 i' ~$ uW hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
. T( N+ r1 Q* v2 PEve. The church was almost full. The music and the
, ]. ?* Q0 Q0 ?6 q0 ?/ |spirit were great. At the end of the service, the
7 ^8 ^4 k# h$ C; W u& J; z' Epastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
* C( x4 c' _4 e, iand many said that they would return.. # f$ ~" j" F3 R; F# n3 W/ P' s4 N" g
One older man, whom the pastor recognized
8 n+ q7 k" p- I8 Nfrom the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
/ g! D3 v2 G0 C4 d, _pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
9 i# `; V: X/ b) v9 gwasn't leaving.
; F) t' d* U! X7 i. R/ @. a% o' \The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
/ j0 [& G: N ^0 lthe front wall because it was identical to one
* s/ P. g0 @% z# C% L: Zthat his wife had made years ago when
6 v+ G" ?9 e7 Xthey lived in Austria before the war and how
" C; [4 e" |8 L5 | pcould there be two tablecloths so much alike? ) q! S" [1 b3 e( P$ y
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he , `' b9 i" C8 }, [
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
( n Z$ z, G3 k# @supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
. J* N, O: l! {# b& _5 h) a4 X7 Cput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home! S# u7 i, H7 q8 z: o0 u' l3 d: x7 W
again all the 35 years between.
5 J p/ o9 y4 G0 q nT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to / @& q+ M; W! T4 W7 W7 W$ k
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten . f0 d2 G6 Y1 |8 i0 y; ~4 t ^6 c
Island and to the same house where the pastor
5 i! f# \ H6 A7 _2 \& }+ _$ W& Ohad taken the woman three days earlier.
& N: p- y; v# g) o! T7 |3 V* LHe helped the man climb the three flights of
6 [8 e) G: w" ?; b3 l/ kstairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on3 T/ P$ n9 l" e' @, A8 _& |' F
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas
3 d3 i5 D* M( a% areunion he could ever imagine.+ b/ E- C2 C' u% w" R& r4 K1 v

difficult at best, just remember I'm here % J5 F' p- ?& n2 s
