 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason) H! I" g: z+ O" X0 f5 h

The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned
% |$ I2 ^1 ?; g yto their first ministry, to reopen a church 7 ^$ ~2 v; J% S. h
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October ) B0 h+ O6 o# R" n3 C a
excited about their opportunities. When they saw
8 r! \" v" L# F2 F5 _7 Mtheir church, it was very run down and needed 6 q6 e! G9 V3 i
much work. They set a goal to have everything $ S# r2 W2 _6 `9 [/ k# ]* a" D1 V+ s
done in time to have their first service
: W& _5 A: r' m1 ron Christmas Eve. " w6 z6 i( ~; m% D4 A2 A$ I5 ]
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
. l% A+ N& I$ J1 |1 bpainting, etc, and on December 18 ; J5 b$ A5 z* N" O1 ^- c9 ~
were ahead of schedule and just about finished.
# S/ b8 G0 Z* Y& U5 e# tO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
! I4 s' i: G$ e( K. L, j6 rrainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. % W. e: m& z# D
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.4 _7 n) M1 h8 R3 _% Z: E; m
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had1 F8 t6 X- x/ ~- ^) s
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about
3 D0 q, o- i5 Y2 T4 f20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall 8 t2 p; }8 o) G$ h3 {& r
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
1 {1 ]" T9 q0 r: u/ V" Bbeginning about head high.
1 v" _5 @* u/ {2 YT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
2 B5 S( v6 G( s6 T4 }. Rand not knowing what else to do but postpone 5 l6 ]1 X/ S! B& W' _& Q
the Christmas Eve service, headed home. , k G2 T; T: K$ h* M
On the way he noticed that a local business was
/ E1 m* d$ a8 K; J! c6 yhaving a flea market type sale for charity, so he
8 E9 a; ~; v* t3 ]stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, , e8 r, d) l+ q: a) a
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth 1 y$ s0 w% Y5 _6 J9 e5 E% x9 f
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
/ p) ]) U" R# K; s2 [* bembroidered right in the center. It was just ' L( r( j- w$ V% B
8 ~, ] T1 S1 p; j, {7 u' T
p3 H. v5 ]" O% o8 ~
' I3 i- H+ p, C4 l; ^( d( s0 M
. E9 E; I! p- Z* t! X) P
7 Z" S5 Q1 {, f( g* j8 x8 c8 [; H* [8 i
the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
9 T! N6 Z+ j- T J' D' v; w8 SB y this time it had started to snow. An older 1 o% j% c+ P) z8 r' f5 E
woman running from the opposite direction was ) E+ B; S7 N6 o/ U1 @* I
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor ) u5 N G: z6 ^2 q+ A! y6 H
invited her to wait in the warm church for
6 Y. y1 {+ h# U9 Z% m* Xthe next bus 45 minutes later.
8 a$ [7 N3 ~0 O J, O* P; ^0 T+ w8 P! `1 J! }
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
5 s- C! t; P4 Y+ I1 p6 zwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put ' d# E! e( p# R2 d
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor ; ^( j: q' p/ O, F$ U- A1 t7 v
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. " w3 z+ K# ?! G x a
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center+ S( j: B; Z9 [
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
( D* a3 f4 i( kshe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" # Y$ P) I0 _. \2 \, ]; E: S
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
' v. m6 G0 M' w5 y3 H. Tthe lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into0 g% m2 O2 e0 b, l# ~
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had 9 F" ]3 S. h G% K- ^
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . ) t" _' j" c* d! |% Z" r
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
+ _2 K0 m3 s8 L+ w# Etold how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
# t4 H9 o6 q+ a. Awoman explained that before the war she and , M# \, h3 C" g' K4 Z% J1 _
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria . ) N$ \+ E9 @. R, L
" x% W2 h$ Q/ N; n) Z5 I# A$ g
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
4 Q# P) t# Y0 d7 X- Y+ I1 c& e" VHer husband was going to follow her the next week.
5 k K8 a4 U$ KHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her 7 w7 J, [8 M- C2 Y5 R( `
husband or her home again.
9 l: c5 t- A% o( M8 L, d$ a4 i! K4 QT he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;6 o4 o2 R, m* |3 L+ C
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.# q8 J+ C7 {' i7 z7 g
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That2 p' M8 [5 |3 O' a4 h4 m/ w( X
was the least he could do. She lived on the other
; }4 `1 H1 y$ P6 M' Fside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn ( L9 X+ ?( f( D$ K! M
for the day for a housecleaning job.% m$ ~5 N# v/ ^1 k$ f
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas 2 Q0 ^# C5 b- q0 T' I# m2 T; p& D
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the
% V. t! P9 R& N- Lspirit were great. At the end of the service, the
) C6 N$ S: Q% h) _( m! ppastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door 3 y, l& Z* J3 M
and many said that they would return.. * m2 ]( i+ c2 l, O* [7 V @/ Z
One older man, whom the pastor recognized 3 G/ O! i7 P- H3 r7 Z
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the X$ H! n! w; k9 t
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
* M' N( b# o) u( A1 {; {wasn't leaving.
* P+ o2 }; |5 p( U. w( xThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
: o a' c) E- Q2 m& j) r& gthe front wall because it was identical to one
+ E6 \$ U% m1 \ U4 _that his wife had made years ago when
: u' @% ?' |% c. H- Uthey lived in Austria before the war and how
# i. y1 P0 P+ J4 }/ jcould there be two tablecloths so much alike? - b! F7 Q L* \& `
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he # O+ q1 g& l V- ~
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
! o; c3 V: i! D7 Y8 q+ ^' ksupposed to follow her, but he was arrested and0 Q3 ]: M- ^; g3 ~/ I# z
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home* V# T$ G4 m" m V# B' e0 v1 _
again all the 35 years between.
" T, _. U% d6 {0 L$ f' _! CT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
9 J2 \, j5 O8 E# wtake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
& R# q$ e5 k/ V3 `5 \Island and to the same house where the pastor
# w N# D' c& S8 b( R$ o! uhad taken the woman three days earlier.

stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on9 A' u$ u7 x1 S, e0 A
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas
) ~: `* O* j1 n& w4 ?8 ~reunion he could ever imagine.# g C. ?* h+ N
