 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

$ x' v. o. x; q The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned 5 g* K( Q" Z0 L* ]5 z
to their first ministry, to reopen a church 5 X$ y7 o5 J4 J7 _+ j( n
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October 4 |- u$ S% ^& ]/ u' R' R9 x9 L& f. X _; d
excited about their opportunities. When they saw ' p/ h/ S7 ^* |; C( C* Z1 N8 l
their church, it was very run down and needed 2 G0 j% v+ x" i9 W
much work. They set a goal to have everything 5 @1 M% Y7 ~% T% D p5 e1 |# o6 y
done in time to have their first service
L% e7 @+ Z' n3 t7 V, ^on Christmas Eve. ' i0 b4 b# T4 Y' h+ n) E
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,( h# @& B2 }2 J. |5 O9 l
painting, etc, and on December 18 7 r: I, {6 [6 k( d, b
were ahead of schedule and just about finished.
& F) U3 y8 A' M3 aO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
% A# R, e. Z5 ?7 mrainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
% }. c1 S& |3 Y7 e& H O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.$ Q T/ ]1 @+ D" i$ a8 M8 p
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had* r1 ?+ N1 {( n5 M/ T
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about # N" U$ e1 }9 R" a6 v# |( r* [, h& g
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall * [& b, g; p1 T3 u9 }* V
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, ! f- c* n$ b5 o( r" O
beginning about head high. 7 V) m! K9 B5 h4 {8 D
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, 3 N. @9 w1 w1 K, t
and not knowing what else to do but postpone 3 F% I$ s% [# U1 o& n: ^1 }# L
the Christmas Eve service, headed home. * B& w$ h2 F- H
On the way he noticed that a local business was
6 b/ Q: L3 k; ^9 v# }having a flea market type sale for charity, so he : v" {- ?0 h4 I; p
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, 4 s' P6 {; W, C' R2 f h
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
, j& |/ I7 I0 P* dwith exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross & [7 a+ ^' w( R/ C9 \
embroidered right in the center. It was just

" m" [- J0 }* ` u# ^ # E; ^8 P2 x1 }0 T
* y5 P& Y, n+ V# r& O4 C4 R
" K* B/ V' U4 G& O4 u; c9 z; Z. S7 ^# c" x; g# G! W6 q% |5 z- e
the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. " o6 [9 o7 Z* V$ M4 }7 c9 K9 a" |
B y this time it had started to snow. An older - j# _/ Q( D: G: E
woman running from the opposite direction was
3 y; f8 @- ^0 Ztrying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor 2 M7 R ?/ e3 \0 K% n
invited her to wait in the warm church for z2 x8 W5 L* ] a. B+ `! n D6 d
the next bus 45 minutes later. 6 b3 L. f2 s, ~( o) R
5 Z$ g! ]4 c& l# HShe sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor + P3 @$ A1 Z2 N+ A% q6 D. D c
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put / U& H: l1 d! c4 ^5 L$ N# }9 _, G. Y0 t
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor & _6 I4 g8 @6 w, ?2 s& Q, {2 z
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. % \5 l/ @7 X2 ~3 p4 N5 X6 F0 x
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
$ v- v- G A7 A5 B6 N Maisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,". Q2 K: q* f$ r8 n6 Q. @
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
8 u% l: W! o4 b: `4 g# R- X" {The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check# @" T7 U: {0 ?$ n
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
* n3 x' p$ C1 z1 |1 r, g6 F. Y" }" H% dit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had * P& J. d- e4 ^' o. d A. H, U+ ~
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
+ _) ?3 M" `7 J8 R% jT he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor 5 e2 n; d5 X) b! z8 {" ~
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
+ p7 D7 ], h$ }4 H: awoman explained that before the war she and
& }5 U/ j( {! q# P) R. B6 ther husband were well-to-do people in Austria . : M5 k2 A! `( y9 A+ {; ~8 K5 W) p% u
) n6 G6 E9 j0 d- v' J7 V8 E9 O( |When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. : [! ^* }1 ?( w% }) K; G7 e
Her husband was going to follow her the next week.
/ |3 U9 }2 e9 R2 u; C4 s' kHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her + h3 d& E+ M, q& ?! R' \6 @
husband or her home again.
0 i1 _8 }2 ]4 R/ R% F0 AT he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
9 h5 C* z5 i# vbut she made the pastor keep it for the church." K3 b( K/ t8 z% ?# c3 ]* r7 N
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That9 j1 K% l9 L N$ c: B- r9 m
was the least he could do. She lived on the other' `2 u8 J! j$ @! O; K0 G
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
* a3 ^4 a }+ ]% ~for the day for a housecleaning job.& c6 {2 T5 U$ k. N. J4 s/ G4 B
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas " i- ~ D3 H7 _7 H5 m _" A3 n
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the
4 h+ a) {( L) kspirit were great. At the end of the service, the # U# E# {/ i; t' N. R, r8 M$ r
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
" x/ I8 L! Y* f! G. R1 Zand many said that they would return.. % a9 }5 r# K' x& B9 @
One older man, whom the pastor recognized $ H) {! b* J3 I
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the ; [. a8 v+ O5 A; p' `- k
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
3 _1 r. [- J( |: Kwasn't leaving.
2 z6 E4 x, t( V: jThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
/ ~# y7 K2 D: |4 X$ F0 ^the front wall because it was identical to one
: U" m. ~+ A4 Sthat his wife had made years ago when : H# m/ R& _3 W! I
they lived in Austria before the war and how
8 V ~( W5 j2 Q( N" M' bcould there be two tablecloths so much alike?
N% b, x" M6 W4 rH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he $ J( @0 @7 ? I2 I" `7 q
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was 5 i" b% M2 u6 n* ]( q- e
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and2 O5 C6 O) ~: s3 D+ B" ~
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home
6 N( z9 P# Z ?7 nagain all the 35 years between. . A8 C5 O0 O1 k* F+ M+ Q
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
v* @& B+ d! v& |0 Ttake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
! M+ Y6 y5 U& K% x" P1 m( U2 a2 RIsland and to the same house where the pastor
( ^! E2 \0 L Shad taken the woman three days earlier.
% E0 e: Z3 K5 A6 I& D6 p/ sHe helped the man climb the three flights of6 H& O7 ]6 I: T$ a3 j# E6 k
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on" a; R3 E% \6 _
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas $ v* x1 N q, ^3 D
reunion he could ever imagine.$ y( C/ C# [- Q S$ Q
