( U' C# I- V" K% q" a, d. J The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned * q! B# V9 D3 i5 y$ T) U0 o. y s! n
to their first ministry, to reopen a church
7 n! p& g' b; r+ k$ v6 @3 N/ h: lin suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October # x5 y P/ r! d; u3 k" \
excited about their opportunities. When they saw 1 G9 [* A% K* q& u, v& |
their church, it was very run down and needed % n! ^% c0 m, G9 O! U" A* n9 @
much work. They set a goal to have everything
/ ]3 n, Q: j7 [done in time to have their first service
& t: h0 H, M4 ]# Jon Christmas Eve. # q6 e( i' z: T8 |) N* W6 R
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,. F2 X) d4 c3 Y, v9 f
painting, etc, and on December 18
5 G# M/ n8 @* s3 h6 Mwere ahead of schedule and just about finished.
% J) }- a8 @% u2 y2 ZO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
8 ?- S- ~5 y. H8 |+ qrainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. , h0 u7 M( ?. `* g! K
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.3 n, s$ o# K2 L' o% u
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had4 B7 i8 i r, b4 [5 w$ J
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about . u. b9 |2 C: F1 t: z' L
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
7 Z* a7 C* Z' j. Lof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, - ~$ T4 \ Y+ a4 p3 O! \$ {9 o. [
beginning about head high. 0 F0 ~( M8 M* Z+ }, U1 P
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
6 R7 s; t! [ r! Xand not knowing what else to do but postpone - h8 b4 R" n* d4 X* `+ o
the Christmas Eve service, headed home. * N8 O( l0 b' x m
On the way he noticed that a local business was # Z, R3 M2 Y! J/ I6 a
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he
" p9 ]; S, S# J) p* ?9 ]' H, D. Q0 dstopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
?9 w2 a I" _# a3 Dhandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
8 {2 e& u% J+ N4 s! e' I. D* ~with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
( F4 c$ \, _ q4 y1 Q) ~! Vembroidered right in the center. It was just

- k! B' }# {' M7 c+ P, A- Z5 x( Lthe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. 3 M. C7 L( j$ ?1 J% ^
B y this time it had started to snow. An older
! i, \9 `' c4 C+ qwoman running from the opposite direction was
+ b8 n' H1 i r- ?7 y- Qtrying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
2 E: ?( s T+ A; i4 Xinvited her to wait in the warm church for
# }$ p5 N! u9 Hthe next bus 45 minutes later. - e) S$ `8 U g# k4 z" U
) j8 A0 C+ k, }# |! I5 `
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
3 [+ n7 g0 y% Pwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
# J+ ~0 `6 j+ Y$ c8 b: y6 |& x( aup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor ; Z D8 {& B% @( J5 t
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. + q9 {- x5 b+ h$ w$ l/ u$ }0 ]
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center- i; E' F. Z/ ~1 G3 l( l
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"( F; k7 C- g5 m. F' X0 x3 i) u
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
& {+ `0 e6 ~, m+ R' @# ^4 A, b6 c( yThe pastor explained. The woman asked him to check6 W3 R8 ]5 v% Z# y
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into' S: I6 Q$ M+ \; ?2 H0 J
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
& I, ?3 k3 S: b- K- A" k! imade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
3 P8 j* Z; y6 i, [T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor ) Z/ e# U+ U* p2 }
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
2 y' o" P- d3 J9 h& Dwoman explained that before the war she and ' e u' X n; B7 h
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria . * o( H2 b6 |0 j& g3 m
! `" c& M5 J; @" OWhen the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
- ^% p" I0 ^! pHer husband was going to follow her the next week.
$ l6 e1 ~; O" _. F; U" rHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
5 C4 ?+ h) t' chusband or her home again. $ E* @) u& w9 [4 h( ]+ g. @
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
* `* f9 E( e$ R" i- Rbut she made the pastor keep it for the church.
" E' d; H% p& Z4 MThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That
7 J9 S% j; {. }5 J6 \was the least he could do. She lived on the other' Y/ L) r, O1 D$ E( U+ t7 W
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
, a4 x6 n4 l$ \for the day for a housecleaning job.
$ ?& z/ @" z! X% ~& f' HW hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas # M6 T* `4 c% q$ h1 e
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the , L7 K( c/ G8 Z- b; h6 y1 ]. s
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the 3 ~" w6 D4 m7 l4 m* f+ Y7 ^3 Q9 h+ O
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door ; G" q o% _- ?1 R5 L
and many said that they would return.. % H& R7 F L1 F8 y6 g4 k$ K
One older man, whom the pastor recognized
' g( N) Z+ j/ C( V* e/ Afrom the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the # C$ J4 ?+ Q& x3 F9 ^' C0 {7 H3 c( |' w2 ^
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he # w: r+ X9 e- C3 ^1 N
wasn't leaving. 2 V7 m; J" Q7 V6 H
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
9 x9 N7 @) l, _2 G8 Q) kthe front wall because it was identical to one $ j1 L; H6 v. W! n0 I3 W) Q
that his wife had made years ago when
* H% S- R, R# b. b* z' m; d* ~they lived in Austria before the war and how 7 ?; a. g8 J2 h# p
could there be two tablecloths so much alike? : P2 B" v- O/ ^6 r
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he 0 |4 C# B1 c7 \# W& M
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
& Y. h; U2 K! u5 |2 Tsupposed to follow her, but he was arrested and& g7 R3 w4 `9 b* P- V* t$ a& k
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home! j$ `! s1 H' `9 K2 E
again all the 35 years between. + S( c1 z: T9 p; _8 j+ m
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
' @: L& ?; f. ltake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
+ I& D& m3 X6 IIsland and to the same house where the pastor
( F% P1 s `5 B. dhad taken the woman three days earlier.
3 B3 n$ X) r% I" |He helped the man climb the three flights of
1 m, |# ?8 ]7 {stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
9 n5 n [' m4 T/ D( ythe door and he saw the greatest Christmas
0 t- k0 W4 r0 |8 S( Creunion he could ever imagine.3 i. {2 U& A$ x3 |/ ^, Y# M

S o when the road you're traveling seems
