to their first ministry, to reopen a church
9 c1 g3 W- F6 A/ Z0 `" tin suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October & N& o0 A& e1 J& ]
excited about their opportunities. When they saw ( o, g4 r9 }3 {; \; n j
their church, it was very run down and needed
/ ~- J; y% {8 o% Gmuch work. They set a goal to have everything
) Y0 ~0 S M |done in time to have their first service 2 D& o5 c7 p& i
on Christmas Eve.
8 G3 R* Y1 M$ i1 B' oT hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,0 k$ f- u6 e/ i9 _
painting, etc, and on December 18 + O* f$ l1 |) Z% w* m. c( Z
were ahead of schedule and just about finished. - F& Y8 u ?" t) |" x* ~$ @
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
0 K% {' D2 ]3 ?, ?/ s- Rrainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. - s) m( W I" ]& i0 W" q* W; v
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
k5 r" d1 G6 S& N( cHis heart sank when he saw that the roof had% `) A" l! |. N4 p9 c+ P, R, h
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about
+ ?5 z, w7 |& j, _2 p20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
# l* O8 z6 L$ x2 a3 g3 _' B& S! x0 k; Rof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
% V: Y* j7 S) y( F+ k7 x+ ^$ Xbeginning about head high.
% Z# n4 \, Q; G; NT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
* `3 [8 o1 H# s. ]and not knowing what else to do but postpone 3 s) j- d& m: Z7 J2 S* r
the Christmas Eve service, headed home.
) Q( |4 {5 D( NOn the way he noticed that a local business was
! j5 d0 R/ P% i9 k4 W9 ~5 fhaving a flea market type sale for charity, so he
1 Q) [4 O8 w7 q1 Z5 r/ astopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
! L8 S( I' z4 K+ W% G- ehandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth / R% ?) A+ F" F( @' J; |
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross ' F+ \ A- N! E1 o% j9 V1 G
embroidered right in the center. It was just
b8 U( ~$ k! q' x0 F" n0 s" V 9 g$ H8 O6 T: b4 x/ g) g' T
) l+ d9 U5 _6 M& r' R9 f
2 c0 L8 x+ ^( ~' D0 @4 v- U9 k. i
! j% U5 o" t; ?" S+ K4 X: f5 [
7 f. D1 w' E/ B+ f/ ]8 \; `& q6 S
the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
. V1 \( D7 p* k0 ]! aB y this time it had started to snow. An older
, [0 r& }1 z+ S* o7 Swoman running from the opposite direction was
* _5 e( V5 r3 ~3 c; }trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
# l! ]# C: `3 n0 h$ P$ h7 r( Oinvited her to wait in the warm church for 1 Z* I8 _/ X' [: T' R4 a. o
the next bus 45 minutes later. " U& E4 ~, x- z8 G9 {* m
* i% O! d' E+ ^3 r' m0 X9 w
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
: y q( M0 [4 E! D8 D8 T/ hwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
( }' L$ }6 r" t/ C5 Nup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
+ ^& C8 i! `( c3 B. Kcould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
$ h) m1 d( e- b9 Q/ X/ f& x. }T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
# ~4 c7 p' D1 S* z" s1 @aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"2 C4 ]7 g% M. S# v( G$ n
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
+ k- a0 L2 A& n$ H# vThe pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
# t# q& z w5 @: P8 o" u0 o# _the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into/ Q& v% r7 Z* f) k/ [" T
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had 1 G1 l" L1 {0 t# D% a0 I# G. g
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . " h M i) N' u4 r, Z2 K
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
7 L$ ~$ ]8 A; F! a" {4 S9 G! htold how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The 7 K7 G. P) \3 P0 V1 E
woman explained that before the war she and
: a5 o* V7 f9 ~* m c2 N$ Gher husband were well-to-do people in Austria . ) s! n0 h- A% R1 y) ^
* K! C; C0 r, X
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. 1 L; X9 p8 O1 d4 y
Her husband was going to follow her the next week.
; u1 E L9 `! U' X+ h% h. [5 \He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
$ \" g# O4 X5 ^' O" P8 _. N! G; Yhusband or her home again.
% ~" _* S" P4 s( Y% O" Y$ t' i u5 G" GT he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;4 s5 N/ }9 G; _# F$ q) ?, V5 ^/ [
but she made the pastor keep it for the church., E8 P3 b* k3 I4 ]
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That
6 A7 c$ d' G& Ewas the least he could do. She lived on the other
6 S* b, d: ]1 U6 @% V9 j- G9 nside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
. g* c8 E! {) Z5 ofor the day for a housecleaning job.
: o" C) H- n s) X5 B0 }W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
- g0 G6 C$ }" a( QEve. The church was almost full. The music and the
1 y% e* {' u, X( E4 @spirit were great. At the end of the service, the
! ` v. i6 H) h0 Kpastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door 7 ?: q4 g9 s7 i1 X
and many said that they would return.. 8 g6 c! }$ W0 E0 a$ I" @
One older man, whom the pastor recognized
( h: h9 v; ?+ F! \2 C& Nfrom the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the 9 v! i' d- m% d0 u+ a7 l5 p
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he / B/ ~* W7 X4 X0 D, t
wasn't leaving.
( r3 \" ~( \4 {9 b9 w: ]$ ~The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
, B! t, P0 t6 ?8 lthe front wall because it was identical to one - A, y% o! o6 ~8 _( n9 E- [) _
that his wife had made years ago when ! b/ K. J. N8 {7 O4 f$ [
they lived in Austria before the war and how
. y6 r0 L* \' e9 dcould there be two tablecloths so much alike? 0 D$ n2 _0 P3 Z4 G
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he ( Z& K3 R8 e2 k
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was ) D5 N5 Z( n" y$ M% _' Z
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
, H! F; `; |1 C/ z ?9 H+ O+ ]! m& R2 eput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home
; w- s' w/ U* d2 D* G7 ~( L3 Lagain all the 35 years between.
# a, ~* ^$ u3 `! Z. j. b. I7 GT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to $ w8 @6 ~. s/ p m* W2 E
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten - n' Z. D/ _# z4 @
Island and to the same house where the pastor
h, V! ?. H( f2 Q/ d' [7 jhad taken the woman three days earlier. 7 y1 Z8 T- W+ P! x2 J: _9 a) C2 R6 y
He helped the man climb the three flights of' u7 V g- r/ R3 n
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
W# Z U5 z( _. X% R( nthe door and he saw the greatest Christmas 5 `+ t- X( |' q4 {7 R) j7 [
reunion he could ever imagine.8 c( Z5 @: j" }# i3 t- u/ Q8 t
