 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned
( O& c! V1 ^) [8 C7 Hto their first ministry, to reopen a church
9 N u7 G* U% g9 {" Rin suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October $ Y. e. W8 H# k' ~% Z7 s/ `: _
excited about their opportunities. When they saw
1 D3 R5 F$ P: X" [& z n6 gtheir church, it was very run down and needed
: V/ } W' Q7 Mmuch work. They set a goal to have everything ( O& D9 s6 \; \1 d+ M7 V' l3 [
done in time to have their first service ( S, h; L+ c# ^/ y3 S, D
on Christmas Eve. - g8 ^; D/ J' l$ O8 w) S
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
+ }4 e4 r! k3 W+ a: l1 ~ ypainting, etc, and on December 18 ) V& P- ^" B0 k: p
were ahead of schedule and just about finished.
( T9 b, w( D' w, r+ X* @4 j3 xO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
. u( I! x" D$ a! @: h5 irainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
/ x2 `( U, F- X O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.* |2 t. i# N8 f3 D2 q
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had& {" b' |- J2 D
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about 5 n' W V& G1 J
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
% R7 E+ k9 R7 g3 S0 G* ]! | qof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
' g" e3 u7 f# |7 A5 j. U9 o' Ebeginning about head high.
; s' u3 J" u9 M0 k3 ?1 `T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
$ @% m+ e3 Q+ k( k) P/ Sand not knowing what else to do but postpone 8 T) v5 m3 f! i- o- F* P
the Christmas Eve service, headed home.
8 }* l* v# R" V& ~On the way he noticed that a local business was ; a; y# Z- W' d- }0 @
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he / x( j5 f% r: k. x! W8 @" b1 G
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
1 M" o6 R$ n5 k7 F; H% k9 Khandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth / _' n2 e: h( F
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross 2 u+ b! `9 o7 D( h' e6 x
embroidered right in the center. It was just
" q( s' J% l- t) O$ t 5 ?" o3 _7 X6 {, N$ h+ ?
% r& |& i9 f! S( @# c1 u Q% Z5 z
. r. W. w7 |- H5 ~- I+ M" i& S+ k7 [, T, \1 N" _& X2 e* Q
7 l# X0 U+ \1 D9 }8 t/ W& o, y6 \3 g. U9 s
the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. * n/ t% }% Z5 C8 N; ~; I
B y this time it had started to snow. An older * C, ]" h, |( h2 ]1 R' M' a3 q
woman running from the opposite direction was 6 J9 H9 j0 B c9 q
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor 2 y, B) m% G' Q4 e5 G% _5 \
invited her to wait in the warm church for + G" D/ A( j' L* c# a' s# Y7 y
the next bus 45 minutes later.

9 R8 P4 I1 x, I6 m# GShe sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor / O) O) q4 ~% g$ j- a' _
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put + |- V1 L2 y3 A! b
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor ; U8 u4 U# r8 n. {8 \
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. 5 `; ]% w! Q: C7 X7 B( ~
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center7 e1 o9 L& F6 D7 |0 ~( |
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
6 L @7 `4 F5 t# Y8 Hshe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" ! {: |8 b- i( T' b0 t
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check( s/ K( r" x3 a4 d" ^7 C
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
4 P& B; B: I* Cit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had 9 O3 d- X" i" G1 W* u
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
. [2 ?+ Z X6 m: S) t% K) e. IT he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
0 d; F5 g, k$ @7 T& Ptold how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
( Z* s3 r1 Q+ L& uwoman explained that before the war she and + Y4 N5 x& G) h; D8 J- v
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
% c: |8 n# m! Q& F2 c; p; O- z! H2 J6 ?+ I3 J
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
" ]( e* b, v* NHer husband was going to follow her the next week. ; v7 ]( ?8 Y$ M/ }# o& X
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
l6 ]( g. s$ T5 Fhusband or her home again.
; \* L- x h" M3 ^2 UT he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
: {0 X, R6 }7 n+ Rbut she made the pastor keep it for the church.
; X7 s& {% ^- i% F. b7 n& d8 tThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That
( n# Q3 S1 I& C( W, vwas the least he could do. She lived on the other
7 C* I. C) _4 }; fside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
) p( E; v# {2 ^( Xfor the day for a housecleaning job.
( h T2 A3 x' A5 tW hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
, C( D& i; d9 x# r7 L7 @Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the : ^: Z+ P( c+ ^/ u
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the
3 t& A: P* Y6 }& |7 tpastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
2 H& l+ |* _$ D% X" {and many said that they would return.. / T0 s1 s; p4 S: k
One older man, whom the pastor recognized ! u9 q. \9 Q9 x! \% i
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
/ D8 q& a- o4 Y" Tpews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
- m% P, ^" o) t$ B4 b- Fwasn't leaving.
; J0 y8 k& l0 }3 e U) rThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on * _1 `4 E& O& U C2 A
the front wall because it was identical to one
+ I5 h: Q9 e; u& o k& Q) j8 G6 i' fthat his wife had made years ago when
' m7 j$ g: y/ } A; wthey lived in Austria before the war and how 8 C1 ~$ p/ m+ [1 R0 ~) K
could there be two tablecloths so much alike?
) R9 H! {( `$ j5 NH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
6 W. g; ]9 x0 k5 h4 F( gforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was # \, \+ k1 B0 }5 {! [
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
. V* j' ^& y( q4 B/ a1 d7 N/ [ aput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home; }6 A) N: X. @
again all the 35 years between. # C, F; U7 ?# Y7 t( B
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to / P- P& p% F% `# Y" i
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten 9 ?8 B' D4 M d' E, `7 N6 j( r6 V
Island and to the same house where the pastor
{7 J- Y3 @8 l" ` b7 ihad taken the woman three days earlier.
: V- [- N4 s( ZHe helped the man climb the three flights of% M" R; R4 r! m# B/ Y. U
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
' y2 ]! l L7 C4 m) Wthe door and he saw the greatest Christmas # Z( h& B! t# \
reunion he could ever imagine.

S o when the road you're traveling seems
