 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

) A1 f/ G% C7 {3 M0 k" f% I The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned + L4 h, C+ h- z1 `+ E
to their first ministry, to reopen a church ! a3 X* A* t' Q% h, }- @* j
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
3 r/ u2 _ k: O0 U2 a9 fexcited about their opportunities. When they saw
% h, n- r# N; A6 ]3 Ltheir church, it was very run down and needed + D5 e: P% n& H+ Y- O
much work. They set a goal to have everything
3 k Z# ]& ]& O/ a( a* m' jdone in time to have their first service
3 t' S5 D F( m* i* ^! ^. don Christmas Eve. ; [6 A3 T+ s. H! H
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
9 t, Y1 n$ w# D0 ]" L( zpainting, etc, and on December 18 b) Q, k$ A4 h# R
were ahead of schedule and just about finished.
' g8 }' \) @! O& P" LO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving 5 @: o8 H6 [7 H3 W+ o& ]+ g4 p
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
" s, P% W' \( }/ {4 z- w/ x O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.% u# T* Z3 ]* w( _2 N8 i }# i
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had( A+ T0 V) ^9 t B
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about 7 q4 H* E8 d) G- L2 m* B
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
3 C0 B9 i( T6 I2 a7 E! ?( o& Xof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, * E" o: ]& L+ \' V( s4 R% S
beginning about head high. 8 m' a* m/ j; x9 x! [* g
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
' ?2 Y# b0 {7 y e; ?+ eand not knowing what else to do but postpone 6 g* j! g! U" k7 N& k; U( x0 T
the Christmas Eve service, headed home. 9 [0 h" B6 Z3 i# q
On the way he noticed that a local business was & R# K6 M* l* e6 M4 j2 l3 o
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he
\- \4 i! a( E3 @stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
' E, `* {; `6 F4 |handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
0 q5 r- s B( V: Q1 X3 bwith exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
/ B8 r* Q9 d6 C0 n" e* s2 w! Sembroidered right in the center. It was just
$ T8 ^0 Q k, s( s' V( Z: C . D" s: ]: C; e+ b5 Z
& [' k& U, `, `4 Y

1 x( t z7 r; B" I* |; N
; c2 f3 i. b7 q0 F1 U+ V% n! \, O! \/ F
the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. 4 w' ^$ D+ y) a* R) P' y5 Q- D/ V3 [
B y this time it had started to snow. An older " }; ` D8 o8 b$ t; j, o
woman running from the opposite direction was
7 S* A) [5 ^# B0 V" z# `$ j& itrying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor 9 o" I2 V" s5 u& j: W4 L
invited her to wait in the warm church for
7 y5 [: p1 O8 }/ M* W' Tthe next bus 45 minutes later.
% W5 N0 _. o% k; V8 O
- p1 O$ p+ L3 C9 p% L7 Z4 wShe sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor & I6 j( A) C" @0 q9 ]( n( h
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
. M$ n: E* v( v1 R e, Q8 ^& }up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor 1 k" B+ J% L( ^ j4 \, I( X. W
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
2 _7 y' ~" D6 o, F& U/ {8 m: V8 |T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center- z: j9 _! f) r7 O+ F
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,". r8 U0 o! l7 x" S$ W
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
. q$ i2 E# ^0 p, z1 G! ?The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check3 U# X7 ~* K1 x' ^
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into8 a, L, s; o: w3 n7 d* |6 d
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had 3 _% s: o7 O; q( v$ l9 V
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . 0 w- z/ K2 Q; _1 c
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
/ V8 q" g9 Y4 n+ D' J% M( M, Xtold how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
- q* O: p% w2 p7 B; x8 I- q, Iwoman explained that before the war she and
& r5 X* N8 o' ^# c% ~) E- k% h3 X# @her husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
6 u9 @0 u; W% E! U2 Q- F( }1 K; P8 [2 c
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. - F9 Y$ j8 I1 r
Her husband was going to follow her the next week. 7 \2 k$ `! s8 A$ N: Q+ O
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
* r4 N, K9 {+ D3 ohusband or her home again. 7 c8 }: ?% ]6 [3 q* Q5 r9 T, h
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;0 S6 Z1 |% Z6 a1 d! r' _8 S
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.! a& G6 W* ]: @) N) r% W, q+ e
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That' L T' J2 z/ t* |1 ^
was the least he could do. She lived on the other( X G% V1 P" J- e" W/ e' |' m% r
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn & r& L. y' _: ?+ m8 G) ?
for the day for a housecleaning job.
2 E. D7 I. |" `, I# L2 Q9 J @W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
7 ?2 |* }6 E7 Z, _Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the
7 {/ k6 b% |7 y% {% ospirit were great. At the end of the service, the
# Z; ~+ k. F8 Wpastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door ( W; f/ B; K+ H1 w! u4 a; j; k* s
and many said that they would return..
1 L0 [* Z9 j/ _! COne older man, whom the pastor recognized
& }4 e0 {! n# ^! y' x4 v) I. Bfrom the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the 4 K" [' V' Z% q0 A9 C
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
. j l g# |6 V; }wasn't leaving.
$ i: [3 Q o1 hThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on $ w v4 S- P# r: e) ?; j
the front wall because it was identical to one - [9 O; k1 @2 f1 s0 f' Q: x
that his wife had made years ago when
: m3 Z8 A$ {" y+ J Bthey lived in Austria before the war and how / }4 Z/ s* u' |; c$ n* O$ n9 f. p
could there be two tablecloths so much alike? : s: Z j7 [( G- l; j1 }0 d+ r
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he & K- M/ D1 ^8 J5 S+ n1 ?
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
% m) l! n. L8 }# lsupposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
2 v! q) o$ L9 |: j9 L Tput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home
C/ k- K8 ~/ \! H9 v3 Nagain all the 35 years between.
1 I3 U' v; ^' ?T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
$ ~6 C9 d! M! n* k# U' ]4 C& S$ Ptake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
: c: v$ Y/ S9 q+ }0 K; d$ LIsland and to the same house where the pastor / G" t# R4 _/ u- ]0 e' ~
had taken the woman three days earlier. & ?5 M% {- U" F3 D9 v: T) D
He helped the man climb the three flights of% q8 I9 F! T# s9 S; _
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on; m; y+ s* h+ U
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas & r- w: m. h7 q
reunion he could ever imagine.) d9 w) s+ f* ~- [# ]
