The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned : m3 [; O: c- q
to their first ministry, to reopen a church
# J( {9 ?+ A5 [& ~in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
, A/ @4 h6 e D- J7 M0 z3 vexcited about their opportunities. When they saw
" G' b# G- g* }& k" Z6 Xtheir church, it was very run down and needed
( v' ` c4 E% pmuch work. They set a goal to have everything M7 q$ \7 L- b0 c( r
done in time to have their first service 6 N0 Y2 A" M, `- _( l8 G
on Christmas Eve. 4 {$ ^( O; p6 W
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,% |! C. h% e3 h
painting, etc, and on December 18
' \. o1 o* ~ g/ C0 |9 N- M4 e! pwere ahead of schedule and just about finished.
* m& A* @ q: F5 o; qO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
- [& T7 z+ y8 a6 _. erainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
) X2 a2 @: L2 F. I& Y6 C O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
: A3 y& V, a" K1 D& r9 l8 M' o' wHis heart sank when he saw that the roof had
+ C" I+ E9 q' t! Z# g9 k- N4 Rleaked, causing a large area of plaster about 5 ^0 j* v4 U! p0 I% f/ S
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall ; Y# J& }& ^1 N; E6 K5 D- a) _
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, 3 o4 g* t; c" p- F1 H. s1 e; [
beginning about head high. ' n% l. `# O$ t+ U" V; W! p3 V$ n' [
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, - C0 u P4 j2 \! l6 B3 d6 ]
and not knowing what else to do but postpone T7 H4 X1 @$ j6 r6 E2 ?
the Christmas Eve service, headed home.
* A7 w1 z% J, N. M% qOn the way he noticed that a local business was
: X M$ N$ `0 S& Shaving a flea market type sale for charity, so he
* I8 j$ X! ^0 ~/ c' sstopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, - h" E! }; i% X u2 }0 n
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
2 N& d' s" b1 d, ?7 j- z& T6 ewith exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross : }+ `- b/ |1 a6 `
embroidered right in the center. It was just 2 G* F9 K) L1 f, ^5 F
. f. l, d( P* k8 o' b& p4 E- T$ }

the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
* A# r. g1 _- a8 zB y this time it had started to snow. An older 0 W/ W) f5 Q: R# G! |; I/ {4 ^
woman running from the opposite direction was ) j& u! E3 g4 D+ ~
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
% _+ H" g0 b" X9 P0 O% Rinvited her to wait in the warm church for " A4 W$ I0 E; I9 d
the next bus 45 minutes later.
0 t1 o0 R* i$ r5 Q4 P, ~- R$ T8 l/ f) k! t
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
: @; P) y& R3 ]8 l! `$ Vwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
' }; B* c! e- q# K0 M! K3 G2 Uup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor : v# L* O. t% i1 l
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. ! ~8 Q% e( f V9 l( Q& R0 q8 P
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center) o1 Q, @/ t& k5 |% w
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"- u; \. _( W/ f* A9 g( g' H1 x
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
% n; A: l! Y2 ?: [/ `9 tThe pastor explained. The woman asked him to check' O$ K$ d+ T' Q5 @4 T% [
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into" F# D7 e7 j W$ ?
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
% H, Y& X# ~, o* J2 @made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . 2 \+ p! t, r/ |3 K# B- J1 ~
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
7 t; X$ s: r6 \6 T" f, o8 Gtold how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The ) R) w7 l4 ^+ L( F7 W# g( F
woman explained that before the war she and
2 r4 R5 z1 O. v. |% Oher husband were well-to-do people in Austria . 9 S) e( W/ {2 m: q. B1 @* \
$ V6 [; g } O
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
! Y1 h7 u5 p( `Her husband was going to follow her the next week. / i+ \3 e: w7 {) x
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her 4 [/ Q- Q& l- ~0 s7 H
husband or her home again. 7 _) l& ?7 |+ f) D( ]$ P
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
} u4 H" `) Z) Z7 R) |- H% Abut she made the pastor keep it for the church.
1 a( m' s* X, A- h& S- l) v3 a! Y+ eThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That/ X5 `7 A4 w4 o: Z$ O H2 @4 ^2 h/ |" c
was the least he could do. She lived on the other: A8 F3 s% f3 Z+ P( _" O* p
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn 9 G1 t q; S) k1 S& y
for the day for a housecleaning job.
, w5 N# A# l* q( S) E$ bW hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas " H0 h# L% ?9 X" u. ?& Y: c9 X
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the : [/ b$ b" ^3 Q3 M# v$ g
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the
6 S. T ?9 e5 Fpastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
, s- Y+ r7 M2 P; r4 c( p, ]# F+ {2 mand many said that they would return..
, G% @1 @8 T& r" iOne older man, whom the pastor recognized * t! j2 L% @, I! c
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
6 M, ^# s% B$ ~pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he ( y; \2 a% ]9 M k8 d
wasn't leaving.
5 Y4 x6 s; b. y4 @The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
; D9 `- W5 X8 s7 w" z2 i2 Gthe front wall because it was identical to one
1 g& F$ X5 i' T$ E4 othat his wife had made years ago when
# Y, B) H+ o# D# e4 u+ wthey lived in Austria before the war and how . p9 P5 L( f0 s+ ^& `
could there be two tablecloths so much alike? - ^) I! h4 q/ S: K9 o: z
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
+ i4 [- V5 L) ?; P) vforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was 5 n. R! o7 g0 c) d" {3 E. {0 r
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
/ C! ? k' @" aput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home: F, O7 q+ I0 [) {8 Y
again all the 35 years between.
' I. {) {, q/ @) ~" J; ^% X. p8 T- zT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
" ~" N" F8 r' Atake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
, N2 r/ B4 ]9 b; n6 yIsland and to the same house where the pastor 8 f% s7 Z/ n) N/ R# f j( c
had taken the woman three days earlier. - k; A0 H N/ Y
He helped the man climb the three flights of; Z" B5 u1 _& `6 w3 z; j% C: x
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
- _1 O2 q4 W0 g* r% H/ H1 l9 @) Bthe door and he saw the greatest Christmas
% ?7 U" ]) H% Q' v- Jreunion he could ever imagine.0 o# z. i# f" |1 V
