 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

$ H9 t; [. \6 P( X& K* k The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned 6 M6 `$ a, F; a3 V! ~( W
to their first ministry, to reopen a church * A2 O ~# |+ J( r( L
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October . _$ `1 Y- ^3 F7 t" j
excited about their opportunities. When they saw
2 A+ u T. U- I s! a4 ~5 Wtheir church, it was very run down and needed
* Q* W, c- V1 |* `5 }much work. They set a goal to have everything
C5 A# n7 y4 H! w) w- [( E) @done in time to have their first service
7 A: D; t0 r! ~7 X' G2 t: k* fon Christmas Eve.
' Q6 A4 o! W- ?, Z+ S" W: A* O3 t( }T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,7 @. M- `' Z4 C
painting, etc, and on December 18
+ N3 h% i0 C/ x5 x6 ?& j" nwere ahead of schedule and just about finished. $ b3 R: Q! c3 ]5 G6 }
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
$ [' s; d% h: X3 I: T9 {rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. ' X3 u# o7 x9 \1 C: b }8 e
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.4 F2 `& K8 T# H9 f& J0 a& _7 }
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had8 H- Q* f9 S2 y3 p* w+ v
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about
; @: k( `! U/ w9 t3 l4 b# g( R$ q5 d20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall * u& }$ ?/ ^% Z' \6 T
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
5 A- T5 Z+ ~3 T: W# hbeginning about head high. 0 f7 F2 |' ^1 o/ S1 t; o& t. R
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
, }& R; }' I, q/ C# band not knowing what else to do but postpone ; `& _8 o ?' ]- Z( ?
the Christmas Eve service, headed home.
M+ ]! ~3 r3 MOn the way he noticed that a local business was ; k0 X9 c/ J- H1 J9 E4 l: G2 G
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he % x8 `8 k6 u, K: r
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
* P# H6 W! H1 p- J$ @9 Mhandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth * E) [; m3 P& e+ F; j* d8 ~
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross ! ?# d$ ~8 f" e3 b% c$ s
embroidered right in the center. It was just
- p, A% w; S& f2 i
% _. B; f! b8 `
9 ]: T! b' |# E
% o1 g7 @3 V c/ l. s$ s
) X. Z. b/ Y6 ?3 T; C t9 a4 `6 g$ m) p7 W- u( K
2 ~. a+ [4 B8 r- G& ethe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
% H4 i; h& a3 J: p. }0 BB y this time it had started to snow. An older
5 X, A+ W: S. U7 T# fwoman running from the opposite direction was & v! z0 a! w8 z: ], F! L' F
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
' W. G3 L9 H$ q/ D+ ~. g$ vinvited her to wait in the warm church for 5 V& B9 \ F. F1 L4 d$ L0 A4 c
the next bus 45 minutes later.
- f# A2 b9 n* V" ]/ @4 E+ U, k* N7 [' R
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
$ L/ J9 H& |1 n; l7 ?4 g+ W0 Uwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
! f5 Z" S2 O" H& qup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
. w" g; H6 ]9 mcould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
4 v) W5 S8 U0 w: a( J% yT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
$ Z( A4 q/ \4 k6 W7 i+ i& G( waisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,". v: \$ D& c+ n7 y
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" # d' \ L- D* s( n
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check" Y$ a: H" b& |0 x
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into( y: P3 a4 i2 d( g- b
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
+ L; L& ]4 b- U, q% ?made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . " p5 d& X, w# ]! Y
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor & W3 |: T2 V. B" o- b
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The , ~ [& p3 A! C% \
woman explained that before the war she and 0 j3 g [4 x6 I5 o" O* o
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
. ?# D0 E, H8 J8 l
7 F, l4 a+ A( o% v2 m" {. xWhen the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. 7 ~+ S3 |- F' X$ T- E/ a
Her husband was going to follow her the next week.
2 V: H, u5 E* I9 V# eHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her 6 Q: A$ w& J( _9 s- @
husband or her home again. , s/ E/ _% X0 s6 D, b1 e
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
8 Y6 d8 F7 V: E5 H* m5 \" Sbut she made the pastor keep it for the church.* U7 ]. C$ m, d( x; b" H/ [
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That
' Z! r, s% p/ m- S% A9 rwas the least he could do. She lived on the other
* n! L$ D7 c$ r. i" m- |side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn 0 Z( z: l5 G* `: ]
for the day for a housecleaning job.
: Z$ H0 n; D( t* r* N" d9 ]2 O2 [W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas 4 K$ d# U' e, K q5 Z' C
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the
* z1 `2 G; A; N h d: Aspirit were great. At the end of the service, the ( W9 u" c8 T3 A- u6 O
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door 1 m/ G: B9 v0 N% r
and many said that they would return.. ' I1 g$ v$ g: a6 [
One older man, whom the pastor recognized " w4 l% ]+ v) _" J; ^
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the + q/ H, D Q. h+ K& w p
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
3 r; x6 @% m v+ m, W. U2 uwasn't leaving.
' U ?0 ^) R1 C# eThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
0 A+ p/ Z5 r2 p$ B1 M! Pthe front wall because it was identical to one : l( W: k% M6 p- m4 b: W4 F7 u- C, ~% G
that his wife had made years ago when
8 k, B2 F* Z1 n C( Ethey lived in Austria before the war and how 9 `3 i- b" F, Q6 P2 n1 X# l) e0 S
could there be two tablecloths so much alike? 8 L" k A2 F2 w( o/ Q
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
' f5 J+ c4 c$ `# r, p) Yforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
, a, B7 s4 U$ W; ~! F/ o" Psupposed to follow her, but he was arrested and$ k$ t3 s# ^) Y" X1 Q0 N' S
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home
- `# I, w9 d7 B) e" magain all the 35 years between.
8 @# D/ l* {7 E2 TT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to # G' ~* g1 p: s
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
% [% g& `9 ^0 O* cIsland and to the same house where the pastor ' `% n2 l- B8 p* z# w P) m: F
had taken the woman three days earlier. E8 u+ p, u4 {0 J/ D9 W U
He helped the man climb the three flights of
! s- o$ E$ d6 L$ Xstairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
! A+ j( ?2 J/ ~% x' G- gthe door and he saw the greatest Christmas
; J1 m. \9 y& F- i' v# a. w/ v5 ?5 ?reunion he could ever imagine.8 h- s, T6 ? u- d

difficult at best, just remember I'm here : d; B" o" N, d& _7 X Z& M
