 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason* z' }, K3 g( j7 h

0 n, G1 N# H# F/ g0 l! S- u The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned " c5 x- c$ E& q5 c" z. S7 D6 r( f
to their first ministry, to reopen a church * i4 l, x( l! C
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
9 e! q- |9 l# o) k' {. `1 }excited about their opportunities. When they saw
% k! e$ `3 H1 D+ ^. Atheir church, it was very run down and needed 4 H- p) q5 C/ j D; k3 }
much work. They set a goal to have everything
6 B: ^& u8 ] {0 U% R9 kdone in time to have their first service % }) M1 H- c/ R0 u) J8 \8 @1 i
on Christmas Eve.
) W& \! f; V6 m% aT hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
$ v: |- V! s7 u: l) b9 O$ P5 |' L3 ]- Opainting, etc, and on December 18
% `/ A \8 U8 s7 ?1 wwere ahead of schedule and just about finished. . e% @1 n6 S" k+ ~3 {
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving + C! L% P1 \8 `% b& Y, [2 i
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
5 e3 g& H! A3 T, h O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
3 L* [, A9 e% }5 ~5 I! ]" \His heart sank when he saw that the roof had
: K9 C/ x4 O3 m( c/ H4 ]leaked, causing a large area of plaster about
7 ]! y. X' z0 Q20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall 8 p8 c; g6 m8 e" V
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, 5 v- w9 ] w" v% @+ ~
beginning about head high. # |( k( Z7 D# y% f" @8 A
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
$ ^# F' K6 c1 N! wand not knowing what else to do but postpone : A# R. ^) x1 a# i5 V1 r
the Christmas Eve service, headed home.
, l& P1 ?; D3 u8 H; j' z. \On the way he noticed that a local business was 3 ]- o G. m, f. K5 @( D2 C2 ?& U- E
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he
/ N8 n4 ^4 ^# r( {0 G- `stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, + `% b. k" s7 N( S" [
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth 7 L8 {8 B) \1 _) k
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
2 _7 a) d! y1 nembroidered right in the center. It was just ) K% z* u' L$ Y5 B

, I5 R6 ^9 W, kthe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. - {+ s5 y! d3 o( n& A. o% t4 y, K
B y this time it had started to snow. An older
4 ]& A+ ]0 P: t6 @/ qwoman running from the opposite direction was
* Y$ Y1 Y2 s1 U: _. Vtrying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
2 s5 z: \0 p9 U7 k) [: L; M1 k# ]invited her to wait in the warm church for 7 P8 m& B* j. V
the next bus 45 minutes later. ; o( h, E: k1 X! o7 T
# P& ?( u4 L6 c$ t$ Y9 Z" B( k
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor ! }3 e0 P( p7 d4 H! q3 o2 e2 }
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
" ^, J4 d+ U- O+ Z1 J* X4 Wup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor / i) S! d- E6 ?; W9 i, u B
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
- Y9 X7 |5 x% d5 g X fT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center5 P3 X; J; [) B3 X# b, s+ S9 ]
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
9 ` r+ e5 @: \. v7 hshe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" 3 y/ E) W8 i6 Y; r- q. C
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check! L s% Z6 j% A/ Z) K0 V# V! Q" F! O( v
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into' o& J- P' V1 q5 }; @7 d
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
4 }) u! a8 B% ^; M- s# |. bmade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . + R" p! f: Q2 G" o9 `9 l- R' `
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor $ p t) ^# L8 j- F. D5 Z
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The + c* f' x- F. T8 t" ?
woman explained that before the war she and + A w0 l' Y- {1 S( g( D
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
8 p2 j0 {1 z, ^+ b7 S8 N( W5 x2 W/ P7 ]4 r& k0 }
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. 7 F4 l J3 r2 w1 p
Her husband was going to follow her the next week.
' x( v: {/ _: n0 \He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her ( F- h0 ?6 w7 z) ]
husband or her home again. 6 x' V' F+ [3 j% A( f
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
C) Q3 z7 i5 l3 m# {! hbut she made the pastor keep it for the church.3 d& }- a: V- o, w# w) \* s, ]$ I) K
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That) y* `3 V) n; [, O
was the least he could do. She lived on the other5 M' t0 Q" G3 W5 _' }; N# d: }) z9 a
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn 6 D7 f3 Y1 ~2 z' V/ O( A; D2 s
for the day for a housecleaning job.6 ?" M; r' M$ R; y; S" W$ N! |
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
" R; G' ?6 R- r+ Q2 XEve. The church was almost full. The music and the
; f9 d, f/ f5 |. u$ l' h8 espirit were great. At the end of the service, the
0 y0 @& Y! b; q9 V2 apastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door - m+ I, o& P5 T
and many said that they would return.. 8 {: B+ R" V* z; d
One older man, whom the pastor recognized
6 {+ d4 K- p0 D; D" q0 w. Ifrom the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the 8 d3 N5 g7 A- f; m& A
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he 9 |8 `5 `% z3 o* a
wasn't leaving.
- U4 s# {( z9 x3 D- ?The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
( P! d+ |9 n) Z; mthe front wall because it was identical to one
4 ^, z8 q# ?3 w/ d) x$ `9 Y; ~that his wife had made years ago when + V$ l- i& f' ?3 y) T
they lived in Austria before the war and how , w" [) y4 w/ g3 J+ P
could there be two tablecloths so much alike?
/ g+ v! x: X: oH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he 8 _& v$ b) G* n7 Y
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
3 X4 w5 E2 \6 l! Tsupposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
; v2 i$ A" g) Uput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home1 @: b: [, A. A7 p0 j
again all the 35 years between. ; g7 J/ c, @. Q
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to * s& o4 m3 |) T
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
8 v8 a! d5 h3 r; X" ^8 p) e6 cIsland and to the same house where the pastor
. n3 u) ^& D' f. C' [' h. ihad taken the woman three days earlier.
( g2 V M/ }- [ k2 F/ OHe helped the man climb the three flights of
+ |4 b; G5 }; E4 d4 p* Istairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
- e+ o1 t9 T3 Lthe door and he saw the greatest Christmas f+ k* C" t6 z) _
reunion he could ever imagine.

along your way. His love is always with you. His 4 w/ j+ f$ G( o" F5 s1 S0 \5 y
promises are true, and when we give Him all our
1 J; D6 v4 o, j6 H- N' S& Scares we know He will see us through. 7 W' N3 u6 k0 h
S o when the road you're traveling seems ) t# s: \- L. M- h
difficult at best, just remember I'm here 5 a# }$ p& j/ j! [) z1 { A
praying and God will do the rest. Pass this on
