 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason( Z: I; i& s, V; U

+ X( A0 Y2 c# s0 `% ]" `( Y9 B The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned 4 d5 W" ?* B2 |0 a. F) W' u: I
to their first ministry, to reopen a church : Z5 G; k8 w2 _" ]. j
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October : H1 W: [$ n; P- x9 [0 o) r
excited about their opportunities. When they saw - d2 K2 }3 {! o5 }9 ~+ r# h+ c/ Q
their church, it was very run down and needed
* ]0 A7 R G3 y) D+ @* Qmuch work. They set a goal to have everything
2 N! g, ?% \$ B# r' Edone in time to have their first service . {/ t7 z0 z9 i E3 [$ Q
on Christmas Eve. % ~2 T$ {- b- R8 v, t0 L% k
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
5 S' p2 y% |+ Npainting, etc, and on December 18 8 g+ Z k! |0 l9 T: m& p1 G
were ahead of schedule and just about finished. - C( ?* N1 n, d' I U
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
% a' H; G0 Z! \9 grainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
: c5 v! [* j4 g4 {' _, K8 {2 f O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
! j! w. m, G; v8 A0 HHis heart sank when he saw that the roof had" \& _# t5 t9 P2 H# g& ?5 o+ M
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about * d! v, d. ~) ]8 @% s
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall 8 l/ Y& q0 ]3 V+ b
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
; ^+ b" E' Z/ i. }, Nbeginning about head high. ; y6 s5 e' N: V( z7 \8 ~
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
- s/ E; r) @/ c l+ V2 ~and not knowing what else to do but postpone 3 C( d. N. V0 u# u7 U5 Q
the Christmas Eve service, headed home. " Q8 I& w: M3 [- ?( d
On the way he noticed that a local business was
3 V h" {, U5 V4 y) i( {having a flea market type sale for charity, so he
" Q2 _$ N) K" K7 N- A, V. Bstopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
4 M, R7 n4 P% z4 X3 I6 |; \7 `; l' ^handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
4 z9 E& V/ O T2 q* u2 @6 y4 n: u8 U! i4 Fwith exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross 0 F: r( G& t+ ^7 ?& ^4 x
embroidered right in the center. It was just
+ P4 Y6 R8 y& V$ ? & C% |8 B7 \3 q, P- t- R
- V( o# t* H# n' G& G3 y
5 \/ }. u6 {% r4 r( r* Z9 S& M9 [. x
7 P R1 Y2 Y% g8 F3 ^& b* |# B% n5 x% ~# ~4 Y3 A; D
the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
: B3 G) E; d% |7 R8 ^B y this time it had started to snow. An older
) f. L. u0 U2 Wwoman running from the opposite direction was
8 }5 Z5 \; S, g7 Ztrying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor , @. p% v, P: ^- L
invited her to wait in the warm church for
4 n5 G+ P9 B- r$ a Hthe next bus 45 minutes later.
" P' R& T8 a' ]5 F* Q7 }/ @
0 R5 q. w& j. i% W X7 ^She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor % o9 ]% M- K$ m' o* A* _5 J
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
1 i+ I: w( F( [+ v% Xup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
% b5 j; k1 U& l/ l5 o- {6 S# ecould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
7 ]) M+ s- [8 N' Z& S5 a# L3 {1 jT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
6 z/ |0 [# V8 h7 Naisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
; @8 ~9 t( W7 P/ @she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" . g; I' L8 H. y+ l7 w8 B
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check, W0 i. T8 Y9 @# M" g" n4 r0 n# r
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into1 R. W" V O$ i- z( }
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had 2 e; G* t$ y! n" q- z
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
% n: [% W8 ~; m' D$ `T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor 9 e0 S) Q5 l% x7 v. k) u2 Y
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
# w. x Y+ J3 T: f- t3 z$ y+ ~woman explained that before the war she and
0 H8 I. w: ^8 A0 E( B& N2 K6 qher husband were well-to-do people in Austria . # @; [ Y# E l1 h0 g
+ R% T$ g: Q* l9 i/ A8 I/ n
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
6 Z, A6 g' w9 K) {, H H& C( M& GHer husband was going to follow her the next week. 5 p% Y( v, q- w6 Q% O& J. ?
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her 8 W" a. c( l+ g5 r) z2 ], r+ G* e
husband or her home again. & _0 ~) I! K8 O+ Z7 u
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth; Y. O) w3 y( A6 X( i& T& ^' f" N: u
but she made the pastor keep it for the church./ a7 h- R) w- n; y0 X$ c0 G5 U3 m
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That4 P* ?+ s1 Y; a9 z6 t
was the least he could do. She lived on the other
6 K8 H+ y! g' h8 r, n$ r$ gside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
% _5 M; U; y2 [3 K0 E5 n6 Pfor the day for a housecleaning job." m+ ^, g# [) h0 _, K7 W& h
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
3 U& N' A5 t, A* oEve. The church was almost full. The music and the ( ^9 m' g6 c3 e7 c) A/ H1 A' V, a
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the
8 I! Q# S2 M8 N( b* C( _4 ppastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door ! a3 L/ Y! Q n; |+ z5 ^
and many said that they would return.. ) E' C" Z; J& u) |
One older man, whom the pastor recognized 8 v7 g5 z+ j' M+ @- @0 C
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the & u# d; f/ c( n/ P
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he / T8 L5 n8 L7 {% {! o4 F3 F
wasn't leaving.
- }! K Z. G5 O- L3 oThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
: J+ y+ w; m7 W& X) q' bthe front wall because it was identical to one ; |) I" B& [: H: V- |
that his wife had made years ago when 0 Z' s) `% Z/ d; t% s
they lived in Austria before the war and how
7 B9 ]4 v( C+ q: Y% lcould there be two tablecloths so much alike?
, _2 O+ ^3 m7 H- M* S7 C7 QH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he 3 J# W7 w8 s. O) i2 y/ S
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
; @& }& q" O& M- Fsupposed to follow her, but he was arrested and" I( ?5 d* x- h+ L
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home
6 z) V2 L B3 e7 M; Aagain all the 35 years between. : m/ b" ^, p! q8 {
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
# H7 N9 K3 {- ]# w5 utake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
+ Q3 ]% q; ~; W6 h1 _Island and to the same house where the pastor
$ Y: Z# J" k2 uhad taken the woman three days earlier. : u( z: w# A d, a) _1 b" M' W" x
He helped the man climb the three flights of
( I! F( }9 a y' vstairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
8 R. i! M3 |5 ~( I2 Xthe door and he saw the greatest Christmas
: `% p7 F6 s2 }. W* H# j) i! a# Hreunion he could ever imagine.
