 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

% s& v! `0 D! I; K+ j The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned - s6 f1 L& a7 V* N2 K
to their first ministry, to reopen a church " q% e1 B4 y( G9 _% l
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October 9 M2 Y2 D% U9 @% h# D
excited about their opportunities. When they saw
5 ?0 E: J' Y& e C2 ^ Ltheir church, it was very run down and needed
" l5 N, U2 o$ _; g( U9 V- `much work. They set a goal to have everything
& o% h4 s3 e* ]/ b. O- W0 edone in time to have their first service
' q1 b) h; \/ W9 S5 _5 ^on Christmas Eve.
- C+ h+ e" z# W8 y ^7 GT hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,1 G0 w# I1 |0 N7 i
painting, etc, and on December 18
* X y7 B' W1 T; pwere ahead of schedule and just about finished. ; \6 G% ?0 w8 `$ x: A# B
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving ' z& |( V, o5 X% u C
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
3 N1 x# g X' i- M$ {+ d; Z7 u O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.3 {6 Z& x0 Q& w" E, N
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had
) {0 Y0 p5 o d$ d3 [$ r5 [leaked, causing a large area of plaster about
+ j9 Z4 f) ?5 |20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
" h- k5 a# n2 v# l7 X! Vof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
& o: A8 X$ \, D q' p- E3 X, Jbeginning about head high. * A" S' G2 X6 x7 `
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, 5 M( A* |; n: _0 f- B2 d: X. U
and not knowing what else to do but postpone
6 O0 F' D3 q# l1 i8 G+ v: K, T$ O7 Zthe Christmas Eve service, headed home.
) m" u7 i, y Q) `On the way he noticed that a local business was
) a0 H5 Y3 Z$ k; t1 t& |( Zhaving a flea market type sale for charity, so he
! V/ B' I" Z3 W, \$ dstopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, 8 e6 t& M: [; ^2 `0 F( V) \8 ?
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
( Q2 r* Q% F, \. ~3 {& M, Zwith exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
, O( u C9 T0 t ~4 k# ~( Z3 Uembroidered right in the center. It was just $ W) }9 w4 g' F/ J/ S3 M4 p
! Z' v7 W) A7 n* P
, {, N: {" a6 c, m) Y
2 h5 ~. V4 m4 e( h. a
4 w6 G, t) I. e$ t/ ] , s( U/ z/ f* t5 J7 j
- ]9 M* P; I0 h% r# t; Ythe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
) |& R( E3 d' C2 n$ W' ^4 QB y this time it had started to snow. An older ( ? A3 I7 y- e$ \+ H6 v9 U
woman running from the opposite direction was
8 u* @& y s" }/ z9 b) a) a; ltrying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor # G# g, P2 p& I6 Z, y3 ~+ Y8 m
invited her to wait in the warm church for
4 B) X, y u5 F8 ]- V) B( cthe next bus 45 minutes later.
7 V6 N2 ?( Q2 Z/ P4 p# Y' {. k
! I k+ B6 b' hShe sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
- j$ B, F$ F& ~0 V6 twhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put / u3 R1 |& Z1 u7 W" C
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor 0 ^$ e$ f% s3 s9 H; }* L6 a% z; t
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
) f" C/ p# K. o! E' M; C6 ^T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
' @; w$ @) i+ C) M/ haisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
* g& ]. Y2 Y3 I9 q2 G' ushe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
, ]) n( d. Q; ^# ]- m: _The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check) a7 C$ k* h) l) G. Z
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
5 M* h7 T; Q; D" z( h; _* Y- Z( y% xit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
P2 a' u. h% ?4 lmade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . 9 [# x A# R3 T2 @: F. v
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor , s# H a4 P0 S0 V: o& L/ n" g
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
3 \- K' u8 t9 R" `' g. Qwoman explained that before the war she and
" b% X1 h' b, e9 x; W0 U- Eher husband were well-to-do people in Austria . 4 p+ j6 e4 f/ K3 q n+ U% O
7 i. ?0 m% K/ r1 b' EWhen the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. " d6 k) r1 V% b3 ^; d
Her husband was going to follow her the next week. ( Q8 c0 w& L- J+ w
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her % s2 x: h1 e: n3 K5 \3 [/ o5 k
husband or her home again. * v! ?/ q+ r: O" k8 N
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;0 ~* Z5 U2 w9 s# a4 U6 r% o
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.
6 P' X- R: W' G/ Q7 O: dThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That
0 H9 H2 ?! T4 w/ B B" |: i+ _was the least he could do. She lived on the other8 p. K- z9 W0 Y% A) P
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
- d$ p2 `3 o; ^6 afor the day for a housecleaning job.% ~& }6 A, o! |! ~. o3 A b
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
. B H/ w5 W, N7 YEve. The church was almost full. The music and the 6 L6 n* z& H* d
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the ; K( r* x; ~9 d( E
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
5 w( r7 a0 R3 ?and many said that they would return..
3 V. ^& ?' ` T' x/ I* T& vOne older man, whom the pastor recognized ' _) X+ O, q% U3 ~$ V
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
# I! x4 I. @+ Q5 [, Hpews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
: r1 S c$ T! P7 W) [: Q- p. V( qwasn't leaving.
3 D& e6 w% J. tThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
6 v% n; x" _* Xthe front wall because it was identical to one
5 k7 w4 G5 U ], G7 F, V8 ^that his wife had made years ago when
" O1 a# O3 r9 q; L Ethey lived in Austria before the war and how
4 s# z/ A. |. K5 N% V: z( Icould there be two tablecloths so much alike? ; d# T3 F' }; R2 X% W
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
7 g& b1 ~3 l5 S0 L+ @! `forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
7 e* j$ m, U" d& msupposed to follow her, but he was arrested and: r2 Q/ `- a( M$ x5 _" Z/ l
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home
& a. n, l& D+ `0 Y; Hagain all the 35 years between.
& V1 `$ e/ ?$ }* ]9 \T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
% _" P* e" {: X; wtake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
0 v3 O; \" M2 ]' J( ?( D8 yIsland and to the same house where the pastor 1 m) _% U/ j6 n7 \* t
had taken the woman three days earlier.
$ h0 v5 e2 E: B' @0 t a2 qHe helped the man climb the three flights of' `: p# ? B4 i0 P
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on4 [% u4 ^+ Y6 g
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas
