3 s9 N! z% Z; D The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned
6 N' |1 u2 K' Z, a; rto their first ministry, to reopen a church k* O9 f m4 B, } l& n
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
% ]& }( B) @5 W; U9 q. R( Dexcited about their opportunities. When they saw
. F+ `3 O- p% h/ a* Rtheir church, it was very run down and needed
7 s0 @8 Z7 V( D- r% S4 w: }8 Pmuch work. They set a goal to have everything & T9 w/ |7 F I$ P
done in time to have their first service
3 ~+ w) l' ^% U- o- Qon Christmas Eve. 7 i t5 l5 n7 a9 `# \, r
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,, p5 y8 a4 U8 o
painting, etc, and on December 18 m9 r: W5 l2 Y# h6 @- g t
were ahead of schedule and just about finished. ' x2 s' g$ H3 Y) u9 g8 I7 ~. N+ }
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving / o1 v! C; G9 k) ?8 s& V( B) o6 Z' Y
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
j" q/ G7 t+ {& u O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.- F4 P' l7 H9 G1 ]! A) J
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had
! j+ F; d3 C% ? Sleaked, causing a large area of plaster about
( @; I9 F8 ^% @% N: x: |20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall 2 N0 O+ a' S" n* E5 `
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
, N- ` R! d8 d" \5 r: E5 y! wbeginning about head high. w# G4 b+ ^4 E+ T9 }; _* u- b& y% l* Q
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
3 C" D: N0 [5 u6 m+ m" d& ?( land not knowing what else to do but postpone
- @; t+ B" |5 A4 q. |, Sthe Christmas Eve service, headed home.
; n- s; Z/ `8 Q8 kOn the way he noticed that a local business was
+ l( W- A3 E0 j' x2 dhaving a flea market type sale for charity, so he
; s4 g; C8 ~! |7 _6 \stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, / t9 f3 I( O/ A S) x
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth 2 Z/ m0 ]0 ]+ e/ `* h. g) ~! j
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
' H. \( ^$ V" N6 A6 M! fembroidered right in the center. It was just
- n* ^" I$ ^$ F% y2 z " x$ ]. H* l5 m

: Z' o, X1 Z& J- g+ F
2 s* @# A' i9 \! r$ E , ], e8 p" z& q! u) n) ~0 l* t+ s
/ Y3 j% H& R7 J% {1 othe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. % u! w0 `. U8 i8 w
B y this time it had started to snow. An older
: v* D- b. k; |- ^* N/ |- nwoman running from the opposite direction was
: O7 C9 a; n. ]( k2 s# s1 T! ?trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor 7 \+ b# e5 C; |) j$ w0 c
invited her to wait in the warm church for . r0 ^5 g" L6 ?
the next bus 45 minutes later.
7 u- O) T3 m* Y3 p" F0 M$ L: [" _# j$ p3 y8 a
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor 1 M: o2 H, S8 d! e7 _5 W, q
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put f, ^5 B3 n' R( j( k" p+ `6 @
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
2 }/ |- N1 f' o6 a" F7 E b5 j% Wcould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
+ U0 V7 L1 p! p" C |T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center1 [2 Z% s7 h' |+ z( N- A
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"! W/ G Z3 B8 ^) ^; K! _) |$ D
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" ( T$ B6 }- U: D5 M8 M d3 H
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
% |8 y" n- |9 `, g- Xthe lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into. H* K! S* V4 W7 D6 Q7 U( X) i
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had ( x' z. ]2 V |) x" s1 u5 t
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
* x- R! y* e/ q, b7 f1 }( pT he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor 7 }, o1 J6 Q4 r4 l0 g5 ?
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
7 ?- O5 N2 Y7 S0 E7 Z$ xwoman explained that before the war she and
^. h0 m0 \- T6 g2 h3 t0 _her husband were well-to-do people in Austria . V/ }, c# O" z1 }( v
& ^* M# Z6 b( T9 C3 ?% JWhen the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. % c+ @! }! g6 \, e+ w
Her husband was going to follow her the next week.
$ w% ]3 {# U8 P1 K) v0 hHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
0 {" M( B% l0 u- X5 [1 u) k& G9 Zhusband or her home again. / p5 k5 S7 j) _ c
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;( O. l3 q- z5 X& p; ?
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.
( ^+ {3 k6 o T- gThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That
) M( E& G6 M% T, i% }2 y' rwas the least he could do. She lived on the other
3 B3 k6 r! I- n5 bside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn : h- r- z. V# A& g7 h# R& ^
for the day for a housecleaning job.
7 H$ w3 A5 K* E g* WW hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
? j5 I t( H& r: WEve. The church was almost full. The music and the 3 v$ I" E$ }3 K" q7 V6 e5 G* a* S
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the ( ]0 a; q; |+ m
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
, s% @, c Q& n' g6 J; O, M0 s- ^and many said that they would return.. . f3 R2 d0 T W
One older man, whom the pastor recognized
5 P7 F' k p0 n, B& k6 ^from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
9 z6 U, O/ c9 W4 X* a5 qpews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he 5 ~, Q7 ^2 z' r* e* {; X% I# ]
wasn't leaving.
. J6 j2 S: K* o$ P. CThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
1 ?1 F+ y& p1 ]& A/ Kthe front wall because it was identical to one ( s8 }2 J+ `2 d( k
that his wife had made years ago when $ r5 U+ o4 h: r1 `) J8 W9 p% ?
they lived in Austria before the war and how ) s+ v6 [ S: m$ F8 b3 i
could there be two tablecloths so much alike? , `& Q& n& q# F! G0 e7 z* M; t9 P
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he / l8 P( ^* [8 E$ R
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
, ~/ I( w% |' p% e6 j2 h, u$ c2 dsupposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
' K3 r% |) C5 a8 `* Iput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home
5 V# z. A6 _! j, W- L, pagain all the 35 years between. * Q1 o3 {! R$ e9 j
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to N2 T! s& _- |) \1 {
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten ! ?, n& {7 P* n& b; n
Island and to the same house where the pastor ! F# Y- Z! n2 A0 V0 t7 z0 X4 r
had taken the woman three days earlier. 6 C! B! U% }8 [+ Q
He helped the man climb the three flights of4 p* F# Y3 a+ d( o+ a4 r
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
3 G. l/ M% h' _0 {the door and he saw the greatest Christmas + ~! b' \# }$ e6 _
reunion he could ever imagine.( @0 e$ v9 Q8 D% y2 h# O5 c
