 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned / j& U$ a0 H' v! {( g) x$ J: ?
to their first ministry, to reopen a church
/ U) _, n6 k# l" G2 s/ I2 p2 zin suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
" r* G. v! w' W1 Y. h! f8 Dexcited about their opportunities. When they saw 6 z: I" \/ N0 l+ k' T
their church, it was very run down and needed # M' `: d b2 [
much work. They set a goal to have everything
. j! b4 P4 A. r7 u4 {5 @done in time to have their first service 5 }/ S4 _& ?& c! i {# Q/ s
on Christmas Eve.
+ Z5 g' F$ L' r0 IT hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,/ W) g' d/ Q) Z3 O) u
painting, etc, and on December 18 3 e2 k3 y* R5 Q( f: `2 r+ C5 w
were ahead of schedule and just about finished. $ W% x) y: d0 q7 U
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
8 U, B: Q, j ^" A7 Arainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
. R* W# `8 A0 t# k3 }: l$ z O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
4 P/ i ~& ~) N: w/ G6 Z7 {His heart sank when he saw that the roof had) e0 J% J( `/ l5 O5 I
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about 7 `- O: U, A; a {2 S) p
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall - k: A9 x6 y, x* j9 j4 c
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, ( i+ L5 Z s7 X) [
beginning about head high.
! z2 S1 k$ x6 q* a. i5 RT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
, J o+ {9 C7 t5 g4 zand not knowing what else to do but postpone 4 P8 u2 H' Z6 t$ p9 X$ v! o
the Christmas Eve service, headed home. / T4 c; @2 y! D) }: M+ \0 v& k
On the way he noticed that a local business was : e+ \& R% v0 u2 {0 a3 S
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he
; d8 F2 f6 Q! w2 zstopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
* v- Q5 W& |/ f' O' V9 Jhandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth 1 U' g5 D; @2 b9 F6 b
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
! g, c0 q( M' Z: ] M, G8 P7 Vembroidered right in the center. It was just
% |$ n! {0 }1 {" {$ x, Q
( W0 e- a, L0 ^0 m
+ s! b( L0 \7 U* r$ { - s& R% u. ~, Z4 X1 d
0 T1 }& u/ z& \5 a
% G0 o# |. d" _- s/ K/ h. [2 o ^
the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. 4 o6 d$ l* }7 [+ u
B y this time it had started to snow. An older
& n2 d; R+ d, `- Q+ uwoman running from the opposite direction was
* i& d( [# {$ x: [, l1 ^: Ptrying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
- a! ~% f5 p( D! O5 Y4 p( [6 |% rinvited her to wait in the warm church for ! H6 W9 S ~9 K/ h+ X1 F; ?
the next bus 45 minutes later.
* B5 M P7 a. w) W
+ a# _, l) o6 t" XShe sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
: d( F. y5 N5 x' V& H1 bwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put $ e- c* n7 ^! q1 Z, k) U% c
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor 4 U6 P7 G b4 i& m7 T
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
* N! y: q1 z2 A" _8 B$ HT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center2 p: H# O- i/ F8 Z% s5 E! W8 r
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
2 \" q0 f& l. qshe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" . j- Z. k' _+ n* M' q4 Z' K+ k% Q' _
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
' x4 t$ K& O. ?) q0 bthe lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into& B6 i. o4 _( A9 e
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
( B* ~9 i3 t7 U9 G6 Tmade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
% B8 a; |4 }0 {' F( tT he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor " r8 j2 K4 H% R; N* [. L" e
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The : q* E0 m @7 y! e& O- s7 ^# R
woman explained that before the war she and . H7 Q: q2 N# p; o: d! [8 C2 [
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria .

9 W/ ^; }- I3 j0 z e( [& B5 JWhen the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. 1 Z' j; L K8 ?; K# z9 u/ J" ?
Her husband was going to follow her the next week.
$ z5 ?* ^4 U/ u1 F* FHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
- N, n+ L6 T% ^& ?% ohusband or her home again. & S' V$ I3 w0 ~0 _
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
' n6 B& c- O1 ?but she made the pastor keep it for the church.! k X0 u& |- i' A1 D
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That
. S0 P/ }5 b- z5 A. j0 o2 Lwas the least he could do. She lived on the other3 O* N% }; Q3 O- m5 X! x
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
5 S& b: l7 w9 X& ofor the day for a housecleaning job.4 O+ V+ F: A$ O2 v
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas 2 S9 {1 F% x' H" s% \2 U' G% h
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the , p2 _# T4 _1 g; V* Z0 s+ s1 }
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the & d+ c3 v' W* b' d, i2 U: t
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door % B0 W( X' j, _( ]
and many said that they would return.. 9 M6 F. U: M" P& K8 }
One older man, whom the pastor recognized ( K3 a& I8 S& x. ~7 K
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
- v" v5 g6 ?! t, P4 s# a& Rpews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
1 O+ ]- k7 g& Y4 M; q4 ewasn't leaving.
' j! x. r7 N$ D4 ^The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on ' A; d0 c& b5 H0 r; Y
the front wall because it was identical to one
: m% v0 I6 y2 z* |9 Y" ~1 ~that his wife had made years ago when
- F; P: f( {& D Athey lived in Austria before the war and how . z( N, U' J$ Z( M
could there be two tablecloths so much alike?
* @7 F9 P. V" I8 HH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he # [8 h& \2 e. t l( {6 P* j/ \ m" Z
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
, R# h0 [- t x6 o6 Rsupposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
. u- `% C6 Q5 |/ B5 ?7 Q7 T' L O& Cput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home5 Q4 Q4 X9 _+ ]+ P9 C) F
again all the 35 years between. 6 K' o0 d, X: e; y! I
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to 5 P/ l4 p6 H" F* T
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
8 }, U0 q; o+ Z1 d' r+ nIsland and to the same house where the pastor
! L$ h) r6 F& a# c7 I. J9 n, thad taken the woman three days earlier. ; C0 \3 D/ S& j
He helped the man climb the three flights of
) S9 Q. P/ T8 v! R7 gstairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
4 I9 \$ E$ D+ Zthe door and he saw the greatest Christmas
' t8 D# g5 ?% s1 Vreunion he could ever imagine.! a. _, [/ O+ T2 Z' D, k
