 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned # @) g$ F% ?7 i% |3 p
to their first ministry, to reopen a church
" f: V5 H& V2 e! o! G: Kin suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October 6 d- A/ [. S) T
excited about their opportunities. When they saw
1 i- b* _7 D2 }' g( W( t9 Y+ C2 Etheir church, it was very run down and needed }9 g, f" K# u/ }+ |! r8 d' l3 B
much work. They set a goal to have everything
* T3 v! C. x9 v0 W' U5 d4 edone in time to have their first service
9 p. Z5 w5 Z/ V+ s5 Eon Christmas Eve.
2 }9 u% } F3 {T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
+ Q" U4 [, r; n) X# C6 ^painting, etc, and on December 18 + G- I# f9 ~7 f
were ahead of schedule and just about finished. k$ I5 Y! l, |- O) Q, i) p
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
$ ]7 A' _. _9 B H- @& E& Erainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. " ?9 A) m/ Y* n, L' u: u4 s4 T
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.3 p( K! {8 g- O4 c" a5 K9 v* X
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had
! u7 i7 l; `! T+ Cleaked, causing a large area of plaster about
/ N8 i; E" n8 Q h20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall 8 H' f- q2 _9 @/ w( C
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
7 T/ c% t- S5 y5 V; Cbeginning about head high.
9 e A, t6 S p/ e4 b/ n2 FT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, Q1 g- m' w% R, y5 B' m
and not knowing what else to do but postpone : A' \5 R- ~0 u
the Christmas Eve service, headed home.
' w# Y5 Y' q X6 p0 dOn the way he noticed that a local business was , ~2 k7 X. y M
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he
& ~+ q# b: }8 Astopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, ! E5 B, `4 p. [0 a
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
% L+ D% _8 X. I& [2 i9 Wwith exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross ) c% c3 P( Z8 ^/ C* U& O7 I
embroidered right in the center. It was just . Y# B( R! d T4 p8 W2 p4 R
2 @/ L) V9 k* J
% ^( O7 `1 z& v/ ~
( V, i: Z* ~6 V: A9 [
, N6 y+ W! z' ~$ l9 E- z8 [: Y & k! y$ o6 z1 _* L9 F* r' a& X5 o

the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. ( f% p8 I! { h1 M& {4 `- V3 l
B y this time it had started to snow. An older 5 T8 f& m( a u4 C# \/ |
woman running from the opposite direction was
0 ?& h p1 F: {5 `3 P6 o7 htrying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor ; M0 B4 W6 E, U) Z8 t/ T9 s
invited her to wait in the warm church for
# }0 E8 ^( L1 j1 ~) k+ Ethe next bus 45 minutes later.

+ W& @( U2 S1 {& Z( I+ QShe sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor 3 {8 S) Z4 o, @9 ?# T& c6 F4 q
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put q; i; [2 X+ z9 n/ T' a/ M m
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
: `1 p" i: R- E- G( _, R0 |1 Icould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. 2 m3 O2 \) o* m' m2 j7 F$ ]; Z
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center$ {2 J! Q0 _; I# I6 E, Y7 U2 {
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
4 P. ]- y5 C& c; |6 U5 j# a. mshe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" . P+ m3 u: `( \5 O3 S" B
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
/ @* x8 A6 }. J3 D! {/ Bthe lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into7 X: G" g! i% t( s: L2 s0 y& b
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
7 l2 M: i1 z$ c% z6 a( v- Jmade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . ( W3 f+ O4 |" K4 R( L! s
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor % h3 d: W7 ^, l* [
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
% `& }3 u& F7 wwoman explained that before the war she and " k+ c8 u7 k1 u/ V
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria . 0 t( k4 |* H7 @9 g9 u3 L
1 K; _' T. h: c3 c8 r
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. 2 K) W- i& h ~- c9 F
Her husband was going to follow her the next week.
6 z5 L, f' _/ V" o+ `( P. h; mHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
2 z: P' g4 A1 Dhusband or her home again.
$ V9 W) I+ _; Y% G$ u4 S# }T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;0 P9 Z9 _( ~/ I9 ]7 H1 [, N7 t' p
but she made the pastor keep it for the church./ o: k- R2 |/ G( Q7 ` z
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That( I* a. B4 X9 y
was the least he could do. She lived on the other# ?1 @ V8 {0 g
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn % \# {% M* b, T
for the day for a housecleaning job.
6 N2 U1 y# `4 ]5 GW hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas 9 n- b, D0 U( `1 p: ^4 A
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the
; i$ j2 [1 D" L1 Kspirit were great. At the end of the service, the 3 L# V6 t9 W% N( ]. ]
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door % S8 V4 M! ^* ?. G2 N
and many said that they would return.. ( k! ?2 K& u, X5 o6 }, q
One older man, whom the pastor recognized
/ N% W1 a% J' I5 ^! A. sfrom the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the + m( m! b( B/ v0 e X
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he ' O2 Z$ P6 Y5 f. n y7 S1 Y" a
wasn't leaving.
s$ I0 S+ S' B- a9 sThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on 8 X/ ~5 E! }4 [% a+ H" P6 ~
the front wall because it was identical to one
b/ A# U: n' v1 r: F- V4 Vthat his wife had made years ago when 1 E3 U, C+ Z& ]% G4 x* f7 g/ c
they lived in Austria before the war and how
* Q5 n- P0 k0 C, Y0 wcould there be two tablecloths so much alike?
7 i1 ~ {" z4 rH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he / \1 d* q8 c5 W5 g3 }/ {
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
8 ? z/ p, ~, g8 l$ Rsupposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
7 t: u$ _4 F: E# z' `9 Jput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home
6 }7 v' k8 Q# Eagain all the 35 years between.
7 r5 t, i+ @1 `4 [) d4 JT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to 5 W: M- g: p) p
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten : `1 A& N1 r! T: Y$ u6 @$ M
Island and to the same house where the pastor 9 ^, s+ _6 l; E: g0 T5 m* B
had taken the woman three days earlier. 3 Q- [+ r# R' v4 {$ U$ S7 i
He helped the man climb the three flights of
( A/ z; C Z4 t1 g& \! jstairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on3 U, g2 `' |( S& q E+ B
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas
