# v. _2 {0 i8 `8 @% _ The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned . B j0 u5 d* u8 h# u$ C$ R
to their first ministry, to reopen a church * i7 n3 @1 n& t/ R, {) d
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
/ ?$ H! a+ j$ }. ]excited about their opportunities. When they saw
8 l( p4 J# @( Wtheir church, it was very run down and needed ( G0 I5 {. c* s- r4 G6 u3 l9 L
much work. They set a goal to have everything
( [8 n% c* ]7 }) T$ T& `0 A. @done in time to have their first service
% D9 d; {! n- a# C J* l5 {5 ?on Christmas Eve.
& e5 T) b; o+ L4 m5 l3 K1 y- M8 VT hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,# A5 p6 d# V3 k9 ]
painting, etc, and on December 18
% o* ]5 v( N* [3 |5 s( V- V' pwere ahead of schedule and just about finished. : ~9 g) e9 _% s
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
. V U8 b5 `# Frainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. ; |" S p: C& X T' r4 m
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.8 g0 a, u$ n1 ]2 B7 h1 l6 g0 C
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had
- Q0 w% `& K/ G/ w+ ~; s% Kleaked, causing a large area of plaster about 9 i. }9 u' q# h
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall 7 b+ U' N7 u& H' T+ v8 ?* C% l
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, 2 o( R* u$ H" `# f
beginning about head high.
- Y* c; M5 s5 ]$ ~) ~T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
& J& w/ }( b4 u5 @ ^and not knowing what else to do but postpone % Q+ @# q; h2 \ @1 u+ m* J
the Christmas Eve service, headed home.
5 |* k' j3 j+ i- K, \On the way he noticed that a local business was * G0 H+ u4 i0 d( j) c' a
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he * Z+ ~9 ?' J) P `+ i
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, 9 s& a g/ \! E' T: _5 K( ^9 \- L
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
+ }* ^3 f' m# O6 X1 ~) Y1 D- }with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross 6 j ~; b \ y/ l2 A. p$ h: D) ~
embroidered right in the center. It was just

1 @+ @. k: c* z! ^7 g! h& C+ j: D- P9 x8 o/ d
, U3 J1 i5 D1 \9 y3 `
1 g% n; Y9 Q7 n% p8 C E- c 0 \5 m( \ D2 j7 I. L/ o7 {" V
5 I3 j) N" X" K# G0 h! ~the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. ! u/ g1 |" L7 L ?& F
B y this time it had started to snow. An older 4 g: b3 ]6 F2 {( b
woman running from the opposite direction was
- f: \& q& b$ V; }trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
l' N1 G9 C. i( t( T! x4 n6 g% Uinvited her to wait in the warm church for : k! X& [) [4 r' i% u# s: d
the next bus 45 minutes later. 4 R. {$ }: F) p6 M2 b, j. {: R
% `- J3 e M& {4 z/ ]0 tShe sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
2 R: a3 [# W, t: x1 [& Iwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put 7 d: ~2 v- g+ n" y! m4 r* i g
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
+ U4 @$ A9 j2 d# ^' M1 ?8 u5 Xcould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. - M4 ^) @5 u/ d; p {" `5 L, z
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
6 l$ o8 n$ Y: laisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
: b; p6 ?! z+ _ p$ Hshe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" $ ~* v; ?4 k0 M$ w1 T0 k
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
. \/ ^& G9 M9 b6 xthe lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
" X! h9 h g% {( A8 t0 t, iit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
5 @- n# ^& j$ k7 c) Fmade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
9 L; l7 _+ ^5 _% P0 k" @T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
* n0 J2 o& A% e7 X R$ Y- c8 T+ Z- C9 Otold how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The . }+ \! Z! C# ]) x
woman explained that before the war she and + `3 C! f3 G$ |1 q! o" M
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
4 g9 l8 J" J. \; d6 T6 ?0 A+ ]) L
v8 f3 E- N4 h o- X* hWhen the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. # X0 k1 A6 G% A) G
Her husband was going to follow her the next week.
0 D6 W) Q; w6 |: B& k$ |/ R, EHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
( N6 l! k' {) y; ^. Ohusband or her home again.
+ T. v+ d" M: f E! RT he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;# a$ @. E! S! R: j% r& F
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.
; `7 c. @- S9 F& z$ W- U& {: LThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That( E5 ?( e h, H7 H( o
was the least he could do. She lived on the other
- |1 `* L7 {" w" G" N" x7 ~side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn 7 B6 z2 i, J8 U! M/ q% c
for the day for a housecleaning job.
& F8 m W3 E* IW hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
, l: v/ c5 P0 y6 a/ P* d1 h V/ IEve. The church was almost full. The music and the 9 ^/ T2 a0 Z* G/ V. ]3 |
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the - u- t7 m, L" ]1 A8 y& {1 ]
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door / D5 Z) g- E3 y& ^! @3 U
and many said that they would return.. 5 g' I- p& L, x5 A" S( }
One older man, whom the pastor recognized
% Q1 S' _1 J) n6 S: qfrom the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
( m5 l1 y' a$ C0 F9 b hpews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
+ J/ J, z$ u3 Z! z9 Gwasn't leaving.
3 S* N! M) l5 V& EThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on 5 }% q9 @4 W" g" G
the front wall because it was identical to one
) ?! ]* D5 O) @% r: [that his wife had made years ago when # \7 Q2 C k8 Q7 S9 S8 Y* }& M. J
they lived in Austria before the war and how
3 G2 b2 [- C- _4 d: |could there be two tablecloths so much alike?
* b. @0 l# K) \6 I& gH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
% S8 B; R9 p/ s5 ]; K9 f8 B/ Mforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was ; G; V7 a8 Z; J8 t3 o
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and( R" _5 ]5 M. _( s, q% G
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home/ V% a5 S: X: y( \
again all the 35 years between.
& R! b3 k" x1 ?T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
7 [4 W$ B: s5 L; R; b8 e$ u! utake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten % _3 ^* ?) ~8 s: K
Island and to the same house where the pastor
/ n4 G) Q, ]7 b, C) m" bhad taken the woman three days earlier. + e% h, e% c$ q: }5 f( t
He helped the man climb the three flights of; Q2 Y" e F# a! P) H, E
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
( R4 y) f; o5 Qthe door and he saw the greatest Christmas 2 \7 ]( y% w* T- t, c; {/ [) x
reunion he could ever imagine.7 w9 V2 I* S1 s4 L* F/ G8 ~
