 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

' H9 m7 ~( |! E% n" ^ The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned ; J/ Y. I2 q& T C* m8 @- ^( A' U
to their first ministry, to reopen a church : b8 {0 ]/ L( j8 X* V' y3 g& v- `/ c
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
$ V/ z; A9 {! U+ A5 j, aexcited about their opportunities. When they saw
: P7 x+ o1 F6 ?, v4 Gtheir church, it was very run down and needed
$ [3 c2 G! N9 G; o0 E5 tmuch work. They set a goal to have everything
6 k/ ~. f% E/ U2 W( @3 C8 U1 rdone in time to have their first service & T# z2 c/ u# m, x& }5 _
on Christmas Eve.
( ?6 Y! r' g' M/ i+ pT hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,/ e; V% I% B T# P. m9 \! i
painting, etc, and on December 18
( i- ~* v/ h, q8 _( uwere ahead of schedule and just about finished. # f+ Y& t6 O5 M' D$ H6 K/ {; t
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
n4 W3 t5 \. B6 d9 H7 arainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
7 H! u& s2 y% {& ~7 s7 ]7 ? O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
$ y3 s5 V# L- p8 XHis heart sank when he saw that the roof had! i q ~4 w" o3 a9 y
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about
9 S% Z+ F% b+ B20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
; a. g! U0 a$ J& c+ cof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
% W1 J# V* D/ l! J- t0 Abeginning about head high.
- l; O, B/ m' v# Q8 d& q- b! OT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
; E# @/ f8 }5 D2 V; ~and not knowing what else to do but postpone
/ h1 Y( t! b( Q8 p) ~# j* J9 pthe Christmas Eve service, headed home. 4 P( g& [7 w% |) x
On the way he noticed that a local business was 4 V/ q7 {/ {' n7 X/ [( y1 t N
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he 7 ~ i# N3 E$ ^& p
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, 0 t' Z" Y/ _6 Q Y3 ~
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth ; T' d0 C& ?% l8 F g. V
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross : }/ @/ h, y6 f1 P1 X. K
embroidered right in the center. It was just % m' X* Y" r) c! b& N3 B H5 |
! }$ D5 e2 w% I- l& c. m$ a

! ?$ l" v/ b" m6 p; S$ J& p" c0 P9 Y2 n! {
) A- C6 f$ J% _/ Z

the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
& ?/ H# a/ u+ |1 B, P0 O3 I1 a* {B y this time it had started to snow. An older
* L+ l3 w$ u! h1 W* Hwoman running from the opposite direction was * I: [- F$ w4 q7 k) f
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor ' d* t6 \# l( a; T# B' R ~3 }( a
invited her to wait in the warm church for $ m; Q+ K7 C3 m( I2 U4 A
the next bus 45 minutes later.
* J8 k6 I8 p% c3 ?# c& E/ L. z. ^1 ?0 N& s( S0 Z
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
) w: z' ~2 L1 fwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put 5 k3 _. u5 n0 Q
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor . ^) I) D! D e3 C. q1 }
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. 1 r4 M, s# k* m
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center& h4 W" L- ?: T. f
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
1 a9 L- L4 x4 A: Eshe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" : M4 p3 @+ X) x1 d
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
% y% G: [, y6 C, g$ v5 X+ nthe lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into( c$ Z* u `" V( V/ A
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
' K2 d$ g/ Z" _# p/ W3 Hmade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . 7 U; D# D. J. v5 x$ z
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor ( a! B) h: z+ u5 [6 `
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The 4 s% H: d4 k$ M1 ?
woman explained that before the war she and
( z Q$ {( V# W2 E) Vher husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
/ S& P/ N H& B! H1 x
8 J: C) E+ U" D$ B5 uWhen the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
" L5 s; ~: D9 L3 LHer husband was going to follow her the next week.
6 p7 ^; [4 m" I- x5 i) xHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
% Q' |8 Y2 M' Lhusband or her home again.
( d; A0 \+ s6 d N5 ?" oT he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;: [9 u K/ Y r! H5 [7 g' L, L
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.
; `: V/ N$ C4 c+ zThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That) l# @. ^- b N+ B3 L0 z1 Y
was the least he could do. She lived on the other4 x3 N& B; ]+ F! H
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
8 o! q+ T4 M/ Z9 L) `5 Dfor the day for a housecleaning job.; y6 W8 q8 K" g1 ]3 G. X
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas . `8 E3 \' A6 A5 ?. f
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the # Z3 j9 g) W7 E! k
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the % c- K, Q) k, @) Z
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door * @; A" Y% I3 s6 j
and many said that they would return..
$ s8 h1 {6 ?0 b! L+ sOne older man, whom the pastor recognized
5 h; H9 p/ k; g6 U% zfrom the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the ) s, ^5 ? G+ S, D* }/ p
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he 2 P5 w$ X' ?3 \7 q
wasn't leaving. ' g: N& L1 c- d& G) G
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
* E7 q2 d. ] |+ z7 A- P% jthe front wall because it was identical to one
; B9 v9 S$ q: t r- q hthat his wife had made years ago when
8 M* E3 v9 v' t7 `# Hthey lived in Austria before the war and how
6 C b8 y' d5 t! Ecould there be two tablecloths so much alike? ' L' ~5 Q, s1 K7 ]2 ?3 V6 @
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he T+ i Y" ~/ @. w0 u' u
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was ! K# |5 l% T5 S# N0 n
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
5 X8 S0 A* h& w: r* Kput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home2 m) n. p. E& A( i' h
again all the 35 years between.
; \! ^: {+ y# P& W, lT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to % J' [7 G: K' R$ u0 P
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten 7 f; n1 o7 `$ F( W1 D2 H0 ]# Z
Island and to the same house where the pastor
7 { Y: _4 N( B* |1 d6 D0 Lhad taken the woman three days earlier. Z- }) t1 Y( o0 v# _4 y
He helped the man climb the three flights of
: ?7 M( R0 G5 Q; h; |8 Kstairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on8 c6 m0 B6 p' A L3 X
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas 2 P. ]2 c7 F, F# o
reunion he could ever imagine.' \( x: X' u( q8 T9 v- L
