 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason C. R# }7 T+ H, y& ]' ]9 t- I

x6 y7 V/ K. f/ u/ O# _) ~ The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned
. |7 z" k* @4 P5 f$ I$ ?1 [to their first ministry, to reopen a church
n* g* @. k; D; y, R; e) _in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October ( o# G A' n O! Q& r- N, S2 O6 Y
excited about their opportunities. When they saw
8 f1 v& A* m, @* ]their church, it was very run down and needed
5 l- v- N9 O9 c( ? smuch work. They set a goal to have everything
+ z' F' [" j) v8 G9 D! t5 ndone in time to have their first service
; @8 T3 C+ ?2 x* a5 eon Christmas Eve.
% u7 |$ g; F$ n) L' E+ HT hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,( o) V5 D, B' J/ I% S: K: B a
painting, etc, and on December 18
- H# j2 R) r5 i; A3 p! iwere ahead of schedule and just about finished. % P- L1 G4 |7 \* k1 D
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
1 J, K7 I4 ?0 h* e# v9 f7 [rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. E5 x9 L# U: c+ K5 I
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
( p8 \0 l# z8 OHis heart sank when he saw that the roof had
, D/ O0 C' ~ I8 ~5 J8 I/ cleaked, causing a large area of plaster about
& o2 z9 W$ j |& D) [+ _20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
# ]" P, }7 l# a: W, wof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, , E! s8 z/ Y' ~: i6 ?3 Z5 q) o5 F
beginning about head high. . G$ t, T" C J; C9 C4 _$ C* H
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
8 T; u9 ^3 r, wand not knowing what else to do but postpone - i m8 P4 _8 }/ P
the Christmas Eve service, headed home. 2 y' z* [2 G& n
On the way he noticed that a local business was & i2 K+ b! o3 A9 }
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he ) K# i, i7 ?( a+ L& l
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, ! v" V; a: J9 k0 w
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth ' a3 |) Y: b0 O% i
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross 7 A- W1 M' L( Q7 W }
embroidered right in the center. It was just - T/ Y# G! d K2 F3 ], T
& ~. a6 F8 D6 A1 z. c; e
" H- ?6 M! k) u* P ; W z C4 t4 N+ O8 T8 V1 s
' R, T" p- f# V" U7 I1 R ) j. z$ P' j2 j. n; t$ D8 P
& f0 }6 g( J& r0 y m$ P- E
the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
8 G& @, _0 I+ C6 ZB y this time it had started to snow. An older
* V3 {1 z7 Z8 W) e2 {2 dwoman running from the opposite direction was . r0 A ?$ o+ `4 [! S
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
/ o# O% U- e" y9 qinvited her to wait in the warm church for
# O) _$ v7 N0 K5 Ethe next bus 45 minutes later.

- p% `* ?* ] _/ s) F. CShe sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor ! ]( i( |/ ?3 Y1 [8 `
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put 3 S# \9 j/ N' j2 Y3 o
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
1 q" n& O, _8 Dcould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
% Z1 _3 }0 l) [2 I# _T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
4 \9 E/ F Y# w: w) f7 I, Oaisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
- U- c v4 D3 j1 D) b" a! e' |# Ashe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" - h# D7 h4 h, {$ Q c! l
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
( M7 i7 b# E, N" G- I4 kthe lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
. \5 x! q% N# zit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had " [+ f$ B# c3 s7 P% Y2 X
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
0 Y$ z" L! V. k" E+ CT he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
; ]3 I$ a. }: `- Vtold how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The % R/ {. n; s/ j9 |$ y4 E
woman explained that before the war she and 8 a; ^9 h! @7 |! j# H( I9 V
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
7 F4 t- i# P: ]; H$ c; ]' P' e- o
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. " h0 k) z- v3 m: J6 C" }
Her husband was going to follow her the next week. ( R; Q L: o! O1 _
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
5 ~: a _% I6 C# F! ghusband or her home again.
4 ^& E2 g V ^7 |, l8 Q& MT he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
: c7 z5 x3 p2 P; @3 @; sbut she made the pastor keep it for the church.
+ n$ {' F; ^9 _- z' MThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That" \ u' `* a e) A. H1 c f7 ^
was the least he could do. She lived on the other8 o. l7 N. \, [
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
{0 I- S3 H5 x$ n, ]; A7 d" afor the day for a housecleaning job.
u8 ]" E O- N, n4 [" ?/ k8 mW hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas # ^4 f' g2 o0 I+ o+ R" q
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the
4 t! B* h0 E: V( u2 A8 j2 Zspirit were great. At the end of the service, the ' ~2 A7 z5 m [
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
1 R7 y' C; h" S1 H, Aand many said that they would return..
) V" g1 s- m4 J9 `& S! n6 {One older man, whom the pastor recognized
/ C0 r9 u* A: o' l* D. f& r w& Yfrom the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the / ]$ y: r0 U% P
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
/ M+ \, W, z# ?/ u. f: | iwasn't leaving.
. q; x# ]$ b2 d4 ]8 ]/ Q6 kThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
) A+ m# U6 ^9 n& [3 T9 pthe front wall because it was identical to one
* Q8 L% M% N3 z4 Zthat his wife had made years ago when
: y# z: `5 K# w% P$ Rthey lived in Austria before the war and how
2 U( x- `4 [( D( G P3 Ccould there be two tablecloths so much alike? ; v; ?- G6 o5 C$ N' p( i' d
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
4 `! S/ b- K4 q3 \5 q' U. ]forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was 1 z o0 c5 X2 t3 `# d; o
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
, T7 U+ Y+ r8 f# b9 q$ u/ lput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home' G+ q" C( p: R/ Q; c
again all the 35 years between. 3 x% L7 A# \/ q
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to " i5 e% T! D8 J' S: l$ I. }& y
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
! u1 n; B7 }2 r Q$ ?! yIsland and to the same house where the pastor - U2 Y& K7 L- r8 e7 R( R+ s* X
had taken the woman three days earlier.
0 Z R( z- u" | ^He helped the man climb the three flights of! V' u: e$ S& B$ d; M, E( b
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
0 @# l" a- e j4 P& ~% P. F( G' Xthe door and he saw the greatest Christmas - @6 j+ d4 F' j; {2 P& i" t
reunion he could ever imagine.
