 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason& \% m `$ v$ u% b2 Z

* {; v; N# y; g$ Z2 L* x2 h2 t7 r0 o The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned
- L# ]) O/ b# t+ H2 k& ?3 u& |to their first ministry, to reopen a church
, V( o7 t( B7 E) ^in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
! \: a% ]1 D4 j8 ?- X, t6 eexcited about their opportunities. When they saw
/ p2 R F) N: b4 D9 ltheir church, it was very run down and needed # \- T) R2 D, A* R; `: b
much work. They set a goal to have everything ; c! E$ `$ Y8 h7 j( m3 J- V
done in time to have their first service 5 ^1 J$ I6 I5 E& D7 h o# D
on Christmas Eve. ' H7 A2 l; R1 i1 J8 t/ \+ r
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
- s) Q% b3 w6 zpainting, etc, and on December 18 - W: h0 b# _( Y# Q
were ahead of schedule and just about finished.
6 c" B$ X" n5 U" V2 `3 WO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
' T6 l0 a7 M* Y2 o% u8 t8 r' }+ S U/ Rrainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. t1 g& \% x; Q, S3 a# `) y
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.3 ^# @2 c$ _, z1 x+ }
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had
5 g$ a# Q) J0 e" j( cleaked, causing a large area of plaster about
6 W5 i) X! K2 l, r5 z8 h' N5 d20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall 8 }3 L5 B$ z& J7 ^3 u0 A$ U
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, : m5 w! M. X$ p( ` W2 F
beginning about head high. + t4 k; K# }/ K7 J6 N+ n
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
( C* i% ?0 T6 ~* x1 ?' l& { z Q( Kand not knowing what else to do but postpone ( \2 e. T; {! h6 O9 j. q/ n2 K
the Christmas Eve service, headed home.
; v& n! C0 F! f y9 [' lOn the way he noticed that a local business was / ^; l) D; b% l) E. f
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he : z9 l4 @/ J: j1 L6 r3 `
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
; A- z6 I/ J3 z q% ehandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
& x5 P7 d, U4 t5 wwith exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross ! M& ]3 x3 O0 N
embroidered right in the center. It was just + R( |# ?3 c) ^$ Q5 T

3 Q' \/ R$ s/ T & u2 I2 W8 z% `( B) F" z
8 P& } x$ `5 I1 |9 P: c
! h% Q% o1 \3 Q- a& T
" p7 O' _6 G: M( `; pthe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
0 U) `; n! y/ B& W: j* N SB y this time it had started to snow. An older % d0 }, S5 f. V, y
woman running from the opposite direction was
5 f/ X. a4 d0 u; C( ~! strying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
& |- P! |6 ^" ^! y2 finvited her to wait in the warm church for 8 b8 G" N1 j% h- g* v& n
the next bus 45 minutes later.
! D, Y5 d( `6 F' d% A% w5 J L$ M! C3 R' z, D" r* p: z4 E
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
" v; [& L) w9 I2 D8 C. Uwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
0 D& d7 s+ N+ _0 o( ~9 M1 f. qup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor 8 C1 F R! V4 O, V5 R. L# t
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
) [# R' ? P& J$ XT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center; m& ^! v, t& s! B: o$ `! S6 s
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"/ h4 [& m! B& P$ }" Y2 `: x0 }* a
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
1 ^5 ?7 m' {. M' h) E& ^2 [9 FThe pastor explained. The woman asked him to check) \/ l% P$ w) X0 D
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
l ~0 p" I5 A& V' _it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had , r& P% h( s: K; \/ B) P
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . 9 ]7 y \5 A% C& Q1 l
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor . i, N* q! Z( K
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
5 i! [6 V, m3 q" f9 @9 o9 D$ V, nwoman explained that before the war she and 1 J7 ~+ b1 H0 [! w, C
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
( k3 l D* a# F9 x# E2 c2 [! Q2 P4 ~0 v$ o3 j* [* G8 F7 R
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. ! a6 @/ `6 N1 @; d% K! U1 S* I9 [1 |
Her husband was going to follow her the next week.
4 }+ I" @: J4 ?+ Y7 c" W5 iHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
. O P5 \) X& R4 w) |& V7 ^husband or her home again. 8 t9 \( Z& O1 I. S; @) B
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;# p, e) L4 B3 r' j C
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.
' p- @; d. g; g9 OThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That% k; u$ ]3 U5 q$ [ f2 P2 U
was the least he could do. She lived on the other, n! ~8 w: ^) `
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
, U8 F) W2 h M+ r: q; ?for the day for a housecleaning job.
R& O, a) o# |4 x; OW hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas " q9 K* V8 j* o1 o1 Z
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the
9 _; o& t9 ?% \8 L' b* Espirit were great. At the end of the service, the
0 D; n3 P }# P& O/ Xpastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
3 y# u$ L4 k$ W0 y, }% n2 Pand many said that they would return.. ! U5 X% y' b0 k
One older man, whom the pastor recognized ! S5 g- N8 x' O& h
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
: Z: b8 k H# |pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he & o8 T: S' Q/ S" h K# p
wasn't leaving. * R% W1 u' w" C" z4 j6 K
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on * _& Z; I3 E1 D
the front wall because it was identical to one 5 u4 h* U: d; I4 G# }
that his wife had made years ago when
4 W4 \# ~9 M5 r! ^8 ^( Y4 x; sthey lived in Austria before the war and how
0 ^4 A" c2 F+ _3 v2 {could there be two tablecloths so much alike?
8 }: D) v1 R" b+ ZH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he 0 C& D9 N# P# g; y5 \0 ]
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was & X8 {) [; l4 H$ J5 c4 s0 Q
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and4 [( z( f9 {3 N' l ^5 e* z# M
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home5 S0 e/ f- R, V
again all the 35 years between.
6 g5 b! U. h$ ~; p" d( [8 {T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
- e' H) r! e. ]2 @4 Ttake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
6 h9 k! J5 b K7 J/ w) aIsland and to the same house where the pastor ' l0 @) ~2 M( d# x3 @- x4 F
had taken the woman three days earlier.
/ @! a3 \, O* k w: t- T5 ]! w0 {3 DHe helped the man climb the three flights of
9 f& @) H5 ^7 c: f/ i5 Estairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on5 ^" U/ t. R( m* m
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas
! V1 I+ ~' R# M3 T& A% g- d# Treunion he could ever imagine.

S o when the road you're traveling seems : c( l% V, D0 R7 I2 K; C3 `' K) m
difficult at best, just remember I'm here # `9 o, W8 {# p5 Z' L% j% y
