$ o/ x% ?( W- ^% s' \# m1 N The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned
2 B5 _+ n) [) ]; vto their first ministry, to reopen a church 9 M4 a" b" `# m7 C5 }
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October # J: u/ n6 f0 l1 I5 N. J
excited about their opportunities. When they saw
n( @, B8 x+ _their church, it was very run down and needed $ O3 G1 T: R4 t5 n a" F$ f
much work. They set a goal to have everything
5 X E: }! y9 q" m' t0 q6 b. Ndone in time to have their first service
/ ]3 n8 a/ ?+ `. N' r. mon Christmas Eve.
0 t3 c; w K. S6 g( U7 zT hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
8 B, I1 U2 E% U" `6 C- Opainting, etc, and on December 18
1 _- G# d% Z% b- w+ F# Zwere ahead of schedule and just about finished. 7 T; K. f' ^3 k8 I7 j
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
6 O% }" o! } f3 z6 zrainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. + \. M9 ~9 ?+ f; q
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.% p7 _8 {& A/ S, p' q& r/ y
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had1 \8 w: ^. `! ]( T) z
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about
8 W2 d3 r! d- L3 e20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall - Q6 [* l9 v# B+ a; [8 I2 L8 ^% }2 o
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, / }3 D; r* F. j. I
beginning about head high.
. w* Z$ y" g. j: ?% z% Q IT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, ) G2 t) O) \0 F
and not knowing what else to do but postpone
3 P! X9 H; G% X6 h+ Ethe Christmas Eve service, headed home.
3 x; `" z2 f( ^9 yOn the way he noticed that a local business was - _9 Q- H/ X( T5 e# x6 W
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he
0 g1 B1 g% `/ _- T1 pstopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
3 _9 y, [0 f ~8 W! Uhandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth & @' {7 c9 p" s
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross 6 r, @3 n- [% b5 L3 W
embroidered right in the center. It was just

9 R% D+ ^% _" E1 l. O$ y+ @' J/ ~5 ]# d4 J8 |* m3 v' ~) D' E
9 a3 V5 l/ N! W% P* d& w4 u( S: w2 y& z4 w+ D
( C' ?" \2 a; h% M6 [8 [; L2 y2 h1 b( O* A
the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
$ x# ]3 O. r8 P, FB y this time it had started to snow. An older
! ?: ^5 h% ~: x0 qwoman running from the opposite direction was
' Y/ R* ]9 A3 o6 b: H9 A+ Dtrying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor ) c; l+ S# i1 q! V
invited her to wait in the warm church for
- p4 `$ ]0 Y7 x# Y; `; ]; _1 Tthe next bus 45 minutes later.

7 ?" ~9 p% J% I6 q& x# A5 Z+ ^She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor - O5 L& {& W- \- S
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put 4 ?4 c5 M0 x+ ?( M7 u s4 a
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
O$ x- U8 y! X1 I% r2 x" \3 Qcould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
0 ]0 r8 W7 B1 j2 z% B6 cT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center/ z0 T/ D9 `$ Q8 c# n! O
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,". T: s( W3 e% [9 x7 \; e# j
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
' b# T. b! e% Q+ B3 L# Z$ iThe pastor explained. The woman asked him to check2 @! B# ~2 w( }2 j
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
/ Y2 Q. v7 c; i: f' ^% Y) Qit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had Y# i9 K# ]6 t
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
6 y% [, B7 \: I# |8 [9 @& E' _T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor # d; F7 M. E6 k! O1 p
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
* o+ `- v. X( r5 Z Dwoman explained that before the war she and ! N/ V5 X0 v! b3 o
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria . / `+ Y) V# M5 P
1 M! h! k! x/ J) s
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. " V4 ]. p. K, j1 Q3 T. `! t4 a; o
Her husband was going to follow her the next week.
6 Y* [ g5 A+ V+ @0 `He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her $ J' z4 H5 Q. s4 c3 A+ Z2 [/ i
husband or her home again.
, N" `+ A9 h( K% z: H& `, o0 WT he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
& s/ o) _) ?1 P! S! l4 o I2 zbut she made the pastor keep it for the church.
6 |6 t& v! P2 D% cThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That) G1 H& t4 T$ S8 ]) l% t
was the least he could do. She lived on the other
+ N/ S$ u+ R8 Q, |. Gside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
. v$ w3 F1 T7 x4 Tfor the day for a housecleaning job.
0 l+ C6 t, P3 N7 r* mW hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas + x9 L* \" z6 i6 R# }
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the 8 |3 w0 G! F/ R& R F) i: A
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the . X( |' @( ?+ i1 ~* O: @7 {4 e: n
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
: ^+ ]6 E# M5 `9 J' m. t" ~and many said that they would return.. 4 W7 U. h$ n. X
One older man, whom the pastor recognized - m% K& Z4 ~4 {) c1 M+ c0 R& j
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
I+ _. c8 m" t9 f; O8 xpews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he 5 i! n T$ W1 Z( {8 N l' h: b W
wasn't leaving.
$ A/ o9 n" n% F m: ]7 s; \1 [The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on $ e- m9 [& ]/ G/ I. ~' p. F
the front wall because it was identical to one
( l" P3 v6 I( e a5 z. `8 ^7 a# Wthat his wife had made years ago when t. _2 F" o* r f7 n2 R7 s
they lived in Austria before the war and how , x% k4 _9 I: G. V- H1 T
could there be two tablecloths so much alike?
5 H- @! w, O* wH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
" E2 @9 N" k3 p* Oforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
J) R8 C5 W' N, z7 Q/ {- s( e+ ~supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and# `! d% O+ I2 x' K7 Y/ @
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home; W! L$ K* W4 K" `) } w
again all the 35 years between. " z- H0 k5 C: q" r f$ C
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
) U) g7 O4 r. Q; X. O: ] ~3 Atake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten " ?0 P/ }$ ]8 J8 u4 s3 n
Island and to the same house where the pastor 6 P0 I7 E5 Q: k
had taken the woman three days earlier. 3 l. n+ i* C- ?; P' Z- e
He helped the man climb the three flights of5 V3 j0 S& i `6 p% C W* D. |
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on* a2 b1 u( K' I- X$ T Z
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas 8 G# a( v! z; x
reunion he could ever imagine.

S o when the road you're traveling seems
