 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned - v3 J- f8 W( l5 o( U! @$ X2 _
to their first ministry, to reopen a church
- I9 v+ B5 ]$ }( b2 bin suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
; ]. J7 x R( f0 _' f" pexcited about their opportunities. When they saw + d; g" S& [" }* l9 I" h
their church, it was very run down and needed ( K3 F( ]3 n# ^
much work. They set a goal to have everything
) m4 w0 z* l1 G# ?* ?$ V+ Ldone in time to have their first service
6 I- Q' A, {) j Mon Christmas Eve. # t" a6 u9 \- C9 g( K d4 r
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,& ~; ]1 P+ l; \1 Y7 U! z: F( |4 n0 F
painting, etc, and on December 18 2 Z5 X' w7 D4 T. O
were ahead of schedule and just about finished.
]. [+ ~7 b# T* `O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
* g% H) E% l6 W/ g2 N* s2 frainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. $ M/ m. }7 h+ {+ ]4 I8 @
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
9 {+ P- {7 m' w2 rHis heart sank when he saw that the roof had) j0 \4 z4 b. s5 a) ], ]
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about / z% ?8 O4 L" _( r% z* n
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
0 t1 i+ `- B" @4 m, k. Pof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
& M) ^4 F. }; I) P: Zbeginning about head high.
2 k: W! D, M' [7 Q& ^, CT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
: d! Y, t& \, `/ a/ |$ tand not knowing what else to do but postpone
) o* Z+ O% p& A, Q9 e, U3 @the Christmas Eve service, headed home.
# `8 O8 ~0 Q1 `$ gOn the way he noticed that a local business was # _; o$ |5 _& j9 L/ @
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he
& R) e$ Q) S, d9 i: P- Q3 n- wstopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, 8 u/ y( u" w) [6 `) i% K) w+ Z
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth - J+ w# Q7 f$ L: x4 k2 b
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
+ {0 ?- X! `* b8 J3 `- ~1 Pembroidered right in the center. It was just ! R. o; r" W! D# Q6 ?! F# C) p

: p6 C: w" |# Z8 x" H3 i- ~the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. , e. P7 ^ _: O7 F7 L
B y this time it had started to snow. An older
: u& [6 `) }0 v `6 pwoman running from the opposite direction was
# w( g) ]/ [& d9 q$ Gtrying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor ) {9 o# a9 F. c# R1 |
invited her to wait in the warm church for - G( B+ _, @/ m* @; V% Y Q; L6 q" z
the next bus 45 minutes later. 3 \1 ?7 c! s, @( _8 S
& K9 u- E5 e+ F
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
1 u# Z6 Y k9 j$ O/ hwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put 1 j% d4 u3 W) w" u- n& ~7 F- X( O+ m
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor , j2 y. m# ~1 o9 y3 s" D
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. ! u* ?( y1 S7 d8 R7 o9 W u7 n
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
' w0 f4 z s0 s" y N; B* y' qaisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
% k1 r" p. ~$ ]9 P. ?& ]6 Jshe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
" A# |4 F3 s9 h/ y" ZThe pastor explained. The woman asked him to check, @( H( X9 Y+ }8 \) R" k
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into6 x# q* {0 L) g1 o8 Q( r
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had 3 q/ m& `, N/ k3 h( A" I+ }# X
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . # J# R; ?4 |) C2 p' a
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
' ^ ^. \1 u+ h Z1 d6 p, N- ptold how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The " @7 c) \: k) Z3 f% T l7 d8 E; T
woman explained that before the war she and 3 Q2 Q6 } W7 ?
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria .

7 R o& B6 F; H$ @* u) AWhen the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. ) [8 G, x5 h! `+ r3 b5 e/ ^
Her husband was going to follow her the next week.
7 |9 d3 |% Y* j; \He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her " Y3 ]& K' \ }& H& H0 h
husband or her home again. ; ^' S2 y# m3 f! n/ ~2 ]
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
7 e) u) m' M; r/ M$ r; Obut she made the pastor keep it for the church.
& v& V! k- Z0 j6 ]0 y4 cThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That- K# ^# c: x" n S+ @& D1 D
was the least he could do. She lived on the other
7 [6 |8 R% i3 iside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
4 v+ } k/ O! e" m) w9 @' `for the day for a housecleaning job.6 J! @/ ]* i8 `- D k9 E: L% c
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
V' _) s: X* k; Z" C& p- KEve. The church was almost full. The music and the 6 T" G) h% d) r7 n0 A
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the ' L0 i/ x N. ]% v: H, Z+ S- d
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door $ t/ i0 W7 y8 R! P9 p) P7 L
and many said that they would return..
* S0 l% T+ f; |- mOne older man, whom the pastor recognized & N4 S; X- h9 |; k
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
t/ e* \+ y+ Z1 rpews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he , g4 ?/ ?+ y1 _$ T2 L9 o
wasn't leaving.
- {- ]( n5 H/ R. e" C$ f! p5 i" cThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on 1 v- ?- j4 }- X; V+ d' K
the front wall because it was identical to one
' X' N* ~+ e) R) C' Sthat his wife had made years ago when
8 P+ N3 I/ z+ r7 ^" B6 U& Y4 jthey lived in Austria before the war and how 4 ]1 ~: D' u$ l; B2 M0 i
could there be two tablecloths so much alike? ; p4 C. @5 r. a6 g
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he 6 {$ z" O# O* _" q: D8 w4 t
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was 3 m8 U- _2 g7 f; _6 a
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and% A: `' ]% f9 b [" E
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home w% _+ d) }6 h& y: U' j/ r
again all the 35 years between.
8 m+ d7 Z! I7 o" q' pT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to ; P' a. @+ n, M1 ~5 X
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten . i" c# f4 n" I+ ]
Island and to the same house where the pastor ! F2 K z9 A4 [* v6 {3 d! E
had taken the woman three days earlier. - k2 e5 |6 a: d$ Q2 r5 T5 ^
He helped the man climb the three flights of" a* K$ p4 z) k1 a/ n5 [9 F2 A
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
. x8 I( a0 [+ e. o0 @/ ]! ^5 Rthe door and he saw the greatest Christmas " U4 H8 e4 O8 I
reunion he could ever imagine.
