 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned
2 b, }5 N6 I% e# ]" c- a3 {6 y' Mto their first ministry, to reopen a church + a2 s J# [( t3 ] c
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October 6 S @ k7 V& j, W
excited about their opportunities. When they saw 9 A) F' P0 _2 I& f
their church, it was very run down and needed - v: f- {5 O! K. ?
much work. They set a goal to have everything
* ^6 H/ V7 D2 Pdone in time to have their first service
& P2 G: H7 {6 P- Oon Christmas Eve. # |- o- S" ]0 N
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
* }6 ]0 Z Y8 a" T# epainting, etc, and on December 18
g0 v+ N- x. R+ M2 L6 J. J* N2 gwere ahead of schedule and just about finished.
& s5 l- U, ?5 x# EO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving - x* H4 M% z, V5 _$ s' P
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
; t" f6 o; l& ^. n$ A O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.# I. o5 Q7 F: x: S1 b3 N, e0 W& w3 y
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had0 s: X+ a7 |" f6 a3 @
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about
/ j y, O( Z" f, T# K' g7 g4 x20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall + V) `2 u5 ]# N8 M
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
B/ H8 c; I% T0 J8 nbeginning about head high. . F' a. X7 L$ R# Q1 Z$ P
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
: l: E! ^! j) `. Tand not knowing what else to do but postpone 3 }0 y0 M# z8 V* q( q) }+ Q
the Christmas Eve service, headed home.
7 r, A) D7 u: y! x4 hOn the way he noticed that a local business was ( A2 b6 g% Z, h: U) c n- A
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he
2 J6 v& f' Y) n, X9 N7 Z- zstopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, , X4 M6 O0 h+ E3 P
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth $ Z# q9 S9 t! b$ b4 n/ u L
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
7 S: T- }: f7 M) L8 kembroidered right in the center. It was just , a( o4 S3 k& Z
$ o9 H, A7 b2 L$ c7 G. M6 [
% M4 O$ B$ X0 F, ?7 L: [
1 M1 l# F( i d4 ^9 x' _' h1 P
; D7 h$ [ }1 k' t+ T2 R' R1 i - A! |4 k) C0 b) s( V5 X. l
, f9 n( w O5 H1 T Uthe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. 7 }( n3 g' u$ z8 Q& P
B y this time it had started to snow. An older 9 m4 {* t. i* `" k/ H# \3 `
woman running from the opposite direction was $ y* A, u5 b7 Z) [+ Y ^, Q
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor # Q* \+ A# n1 ]! u9 }. f$ w
invited her to wait in the warm church for
; |$ O1 l/ z; V& Y: Ithe next bus 45 minutes later. - O( y$ o" w* n% Y$ P
! L F- ^" n, [4 _4 f+ v
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor 4 n2 N' v8 |' i5 p
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put ; l4 \5 p+ `$ J- W K. {* n
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
. o( e, E! L {5 ?# c+ h9 Acould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
7 t) d4 M8 P: H7 XT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center( x5 T$ z" K* i* U' R- E" p
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"1 m; j& K+ B/ y* k
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
. }3 `& A+ G! Q# u) hThe pastor explained. The woman asked him to check; {2 @$ m4 C! B# h0 {, n
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into! Y8 s6 ?8 @" q6 q0 Q2 r3 o* K
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had E8 T# F! a' ]7 D% T
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
* Z; N! L- L7 vT he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor 1 G1 O1 P( p* {$ Q6 y
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The 3 \4 J/ t0 Q8 C6 N+ X
woman explained that before the war she and ( N" V$ G$ [7 {
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria . ; r9 B. S* O0 W; C( }1 f
% n" y& \. `6 r3 l- I
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. ! S. _2 k& X/ \
Her husband was going to follow her the next week. 8 V$ s$ n5 y1 H; \7 h
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
; ]+ r3 ?5 S; {; L) phusband or her home again.
' p0 E1 }+ M/ w5 E6 vT he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
2 @# m$ U- h, W& ~( Q' ~9 ebut she made the pastor keep it for the church.& d; }( J8 F; E# O
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That+ @# |' n" q5 R0 {! p8 q
was the least he could do. She lived on the other2 m8 c# q; d+ A; F; Z5 T. X. n% X! g
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn % J3 k1 b6 M3 U
for the day for a housecleaning job.
~7 D7 m4 _7 ^) ]4 [W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas 6 p& o/ z+ f1 _- [! [" g
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the
! s% d4 {% I% t2 F* G: F$ x- Gspirit were great. At the end of the service, the 0 y& a: ?6 P0 b, n( F* L
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door $ f B. ]. C1 ~) ^. d+ @* ]
and many said that they would return.. , |! j/ C8 D! J8 n# u, X, {
One older man, whom the pastor recognized
# \8 }" s$ Q% o; Ufrom the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the ( W4 P; ^1 d1 C% D2 b7 h( c2 t
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
8 `! E% w% {5 e# n Z5 Rwasn't leaving.
' W( f; i' r6 C; i$ ] OThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
l' `/ O! D, t2 ethe front wall because it was identical to one . B! L0 c# Q0 v- G3 g& ?# k
that his wife had made years ago when ; z! Y5 n' j+ r
they lived in Austria before the war and how ' r* C! ?' K( X
could there be two tablecloths so much alike? . t) ~1 ]% ^ t' _# u" \' c+ p1 ?% p
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he 7 e- N* T7 j! V" Z$ `' g8 I- V
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was 5 l- Q) D) r) O1 d0 p: a' k2 U( ~3 Z
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and+ ^8 R4 r, M0 ]" ~" `) W# @. \
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home) N+ T: v/ A! V a; P
again all the 35 years between.
6 z9 f5 c; n" e# o1 rT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
' h9 l4 D! W4 k$ R3 P. `take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten / D& \ b: \8 q% A. Q' _. K
Island and to the same house where the pastor
1 n, J. }& |1 [had taken the woman three days earlier.
: J* A. M |$ ?9 ?$ PHe helped the man climb the three flights of
6 S6 O4 H3 R+ K* L, ~( @. z5 Ostairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on, m Z8 P- E1 x) n9 s" w( |
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas
