 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

- t$ F6 ]6 v! r The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned % k* k$ u$ b5 R6 k" |& M
to their first ministry, to reopen a church
+ I- S- A8 T8 N [4 n# U# m0 vin suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
8 q! H. C% t8 Q+ E% Q h8 Iexcited about their opportunities. When they saw
( o, z; K, g* z3 H/ O; p) { c' I; T9 Rtheir church, it was very run down and needed
1 v' ~. z# e; M5 `much work. They set a goal to have everything
6 ^( m3 Y/ c1 h6 D) O0 m8 s; X) ldone in time to have their first service 7 p( {/ @2 i* O- @8 U( u3 S) l
on Christmas Eve.
A* r. a# O4 Q AT hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,2 M$ c' R9 @* K# C. T
painting, etc, and on December 18 & g" @1 {: \9 L2 A7 P( y( Q* I6 a
were ahead of schedule and just about finished.
+ P5 T h8 g$ F KO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
9 F( ?3 x- ~4 Rrainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. % n6 m; Y4 A! x
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
2 [# W! ?: E4 k, P' e8 Z6 j) WHis heart sank when he saw that the roof had
, h: e6 M% ]' R- V( wleaked, causing a large area of plaster about
1 z4 y1 @2 A6 m" \7 }! m20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall ! U4 `& d0 u2 A* c1 G6 s7 g. J
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
7 {/ b3 K' ^0 [' l3 @8 H# Tbeginning about head high.
+ o3 l7 l+ |6 p4 }) [6 G' XT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, 5 H P: `4 g7 G% E# \- O! \& f
and not knowing what else to do but postpone 2 o% Q9 ~. q2 L+ [" v* B N
the Christmas Eve service, headed home.
& f' V. B( e5 C8 f( xOn the way he noticed that a local business was ! `9 ?, Q* C6 _0 W3 l
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he
5 u# t1 l& A( M0 f" g, z Q/ ?stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, $ g: w9 I+ |9 }; W! i
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth [# [! \: Z9 }: u1 a
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
& K7 L `6 Q( u1 C+ H* @: W5 M9 {embroidered right in the center. It was just
4 @- i5 u y1 q5 H$ W; Q6 D ) t3 L2 I- x2 o2 P
1 u) M# \: g0 o* {* x/ O+ D
- L2 [8 P7 Q7 o# ^5 q6 @- H, h6 t; q0 P# X% F& O
/ o4 B% [: }( z& |; e$ z( ]5 U& s8 p
( g0 ]8 D# }" p% L8 i# ?, E
the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. # Q, U7 \( b7 ]7 J
B y this time it had started to snow. An older
. c4 K7 i. x: }. Twoman running from the opposite direction was
/ ~* G9 j6 u, [7 E' ~: V" Strying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor 6 O9 Z& z# w1 w6 q! e& Q; a
invited her to wait in the warm church for ' Z2 t2 Q8 V8 K6 D( R# e
the next bus 45 minutes later.
$ @ \; g: P* ]# F- p
% g' W* Q# u$ hShe sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
1 r( F7 l0 {: @5 |' u& Fwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put $ \5 `5 T7 _6 l$ D
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
3 m2 H2 H, m! [. U/ W: d' }could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. - C2 n( K# M Z1 {7 P, G+ P+ m
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
5 f: i$ M6 r) r! r9 c) `2 `aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"4 X' @7 o4 q/ A
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" ; J+ ~2 R6 u8 z4 N8 y
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check& F4 _, O1 d5 `$ Z$ Y6 c7 A7 V) f0 `) a
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into$ e& q+ @( ]3 e5 Y" O2 ^% S( {
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had ! y ] s6 {4 }
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
, d& [( q' c: N% v5 A/ b; WT he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
, o ?0 \- n8 x( [# ?9 atold how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
+ d/ e4 B2 i. w# o7 H/ pwoman explained that before the war she and
7 d0 r, m f2 C% O. s8 Q/ ^her husband were well-to-do people in Austria . , \- [, @) |; b2 @6 b6 I7 F5 F
% l- `# A6 b8 O8 o) q# T+ A5 xWhen the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
4 r6 ~' T8 i2 e9 H" G9 j( ]Her husband was going to follow her the next week.
& n! t2 _6 W5 o, k# O* b6 X0 t, yHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her 3 V& x' k! F) Z$ j( E
husband or her home again. : A1 R/ E/ E5 Y+ |6 _
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth; ]& s0 S) |. b+ k
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.
5 b$ N/ [% B2 Q3 ^9 pThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That
9 S4 u( {' z9 ^. Swas the least he could do. She lived on the other T+ ~0 |0 | a/ G+ Q
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn * P1 v% B8 N1 J; I
for the day for a housecleaning job. h: ?9 C: a, r5 I# D2 U2 A: q% r
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
1 H7 w7 z& m; d; S O" o2 M( iEve. The church was almost full. The music and the
( _- D; m" N; u' Zspirit were great. At the end of the service, the
7 _/ N' n! j2 e' i2 A/ j- |pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door / ?" W2 S, W) B
and many said that they would return..

6 z8 g: m5 P+ J+ I/ g# jfrom the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the % _1 L v2 U# A' T! P2 o. D
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
2 d9 q1 s# C! O$ s2 l0 E: V. z/ ^7 Vwasn't leaving. & N1 j% C3 x, a* p
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
' [+ Y4 R9 @) X2 F( sthe front wall because it was identical to one - f0 r9 B! p& p# p
that his wife had made years ago when ( f- w- X. R$ j3 P9 o0 Q7 \
they lived in Austria before the war and how ' [4 d4 X! c7 l+ K% F" G- j" }0 K$ |: w
could there be two tablecloths so much alike?
+ h# A" B. y: H) g JH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
5 }4 ^& F7 R, a# c% Nforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
) T! C/ o( E0 I6 s( s5 B+ b& T& Ksupposed to follow her, but he was arrested and3 b: a2 m3 R2 ]) @& x
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home" L3 }$ s) e b l8 f; g
again all the 35 years between.
4 q2 x) I* _8 _! V; p7 n* g7 dT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to ; O _9 Y! ~: `
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten 0 m; x0 X7 ]9 E, t3 y& Y
Island and to the same house where the pastor
3 F b3 N |2 \" {had taken the woman three days earlier.
1 f8 M% }1 ~6 l) X- A0 b8 ?He helped the man climb the three flights of
. L2 b; J" H* S( J# Ustairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on: j* t& ~ a: d8 u+ _( [: R
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas $ k5 W# H. Y4 Q
reunion he could ever imagine.
