 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

# d1 u# k, t. W8 G) ~. C% q5 s2 Z& t The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned 7 `+ ]) @& n7 U# k$ i; D% s
to their first ministry, to reopen a church , I+ O N+ |3 V4 ?4 r" `+ O; c3 _
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October 6 M2 [# ~: h, S% M6 L! `+ x
excited about their opportunities. When they saw 6 J/ i0 ]$ w4 o) f1 m' W
their church, it was very run down and needed
' O5 k5 ^3 N; S2 X) cmuch work. They set a goal to have everything \( @+ o6 u+ g7 H
done in time to have their first service ( k' v: j1 e- W. G* ]% E1 M
on Christmas Eve.
0 t/ f! H: [. ~8 RT hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
6 e4 P4 X7 Y/ v, xpainting, etc, and on December 18
4 N; P) [9 q, h% S0 e' kwere ahead of schedule and just about finished. ' e I' I4 l( u6 f, J
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
" C3 I# N& ~* |7 Orainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. 1 h$ ?& Q" ]* x- A( U, d
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.3 O" [( I9 w& n) W7 s! w& J
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had9 W& \1 W, i/ n9 \8 `' E
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about ) o% f% ~' a6 J/ S# D3 j* J
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall 6 I7 U3 e6 h/ ~5 d8 I& l+ u- i, Y# b0 x
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
( B7 e# C; D+ e( L+ Ybeginning about head high.
% L! ^9 Y: g- ET he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
0 n/ B2 O, i$ G2 [8 B0 B& W0 d. Hand not knowing what else to do but postpone 6 T. p6 `/ G: s* X, \
the Christmas Eve service, headed home.
' i/ N/ Y7 l% T1 wOn the way he noticed that a local business was 3 k9 H$ t8 ], }1 I3 ~1 m0 N- }
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he
y2 S; y5 W H* o' P% Z- xstopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
2 K6 i1 {) V2 @& ?" {handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth & ]0 k. r: p7 I; S
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross K" O1 R5 ?; l- E3 j- X
embroidered right in the center. It was just
) u+ N- I" a% k. R9 W. _
) K, O5 V0 [ L3 c, j
: q3 F2 K6 V* T5 w. I 8 j. B4 a, T R6 y
. f: U. H/ J6 S) ~9 N
: s& G. s7 q0 Q9 j8 c1 Y( u& r+ ?
the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. & F- v* d+ B. a; q+ h C* z
B y this time it had started to snow. An older
) E/ k5 p0 R+ P; M+ C5 j; fwoman running from the opposite direction was
: N' S9 {, N* M1 Ptrying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor / D+ T8 Q! c" q1 c4 ^3 X) s
invited her to wait in the warm church for : k; @" S6 L; k1 n. s* Z
the next bus 45 minutes later. * b3 f: D+ \6 ~+ _
5 J+ c, k7 J& F: U7 \7 S( fShe sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
; A0 e9 H! D0 k( T, Fwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
: w6 ^1 k3 V& j& W2 S. n2 gup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor + n3 O. g* i: G5 z6 d( \
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
/ y3 o, g7 [2 |9 r9 @3 _- |T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center* v, [' d; p9 a+ v0 J. h
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
9 `# h! I) b, S% ~4 ^she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
1 ]$ z/ ^6 h( f2 ?7 A$ r* FThe pastor explained. The woman asked him to check5 D d7 K% k: p% q! ]# C- t7 V; l
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into9 k( c1 |5 r# x/ W) X
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had 3 z: X& B* z4 ~. ]8 K
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
+ _. ]: E: s! Y8 v% WT he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
1 c @ M0 L: \3 L5 R; ytold how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The % N1 `5 L8 ~% o4 \
woman explained that before the war she and
8 r* {6 L: W" qher husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
p% J5 O7 R( F9 K# I% L& R
) n; S5 h1 P, R- k+ CWhen the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. 5 j% v6 V5 q) V# o$ P* R) s
Her husband was going to follow her the next week.
2 t3 w8 }+ T4 f) KHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her & t D4 G2 u/ ]' C) R/ F8 X" ~
husband or her home again. 3 n( h5 n$ B: [
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;/ c+ r/ e L9 X
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.
4 a, Y6 r( S0 {" H w7 v5 S' ~( OThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That4 J' Z! w; c" |
was the least he could do. She lived on the other8 n8 X) s) W5 H- M; v
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn $ s3 ^" B9 e" L6 u+ v
for the day for a housecleaning job.
- l5 T* `" l7 D' E4 T7 ~W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas 9 H6 p. z# Q2 I
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the
. V% ^9 |, s$ C/ Aspirit were great. At the end of the service, the 8 \& T7 t) n' s* r" @
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door & b6 P5 a8 H, U( C ~, W( D
and many said that they would return..
' E0 I* |- l+ o# s6 E3 q; C# HOne older man, whom the pastor recognized 5 l9 k. J. O4 t. \' u- \7 C1 Z$ B- X* G+ M
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
; L. \7 R2 d, E |* P8 h1 [pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he 5 z2 |0 ^5 n5 G2 e- k8 ~; d
wasn't leaving.
7 ? ]: R7 Q$ gThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
' l c* [. Q _: @( Nthe front wall because it was identical to one R# ~$ f4 J4 E- Z! K9 Z- L
that his wife had made years ago when $ b0 m9 M, o. P/ _
they lived in Austria before the war and how
/ \- s# t! M. G1 j& ocould there be two tablecloths so much alike? / M0 I: J) x! v. P
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
- b2 Z! x1 W7 e3 Nforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was 0 A$ j' R* A5 ]0 V4 k
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
' A% b0 G2 k: b4 S* fput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home; ^4 E8 N" [7 H% h, v
again all the 35 years between.
5 T2 j- O& g" H' @9 b/ z6 ]T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to # E! N; `/ E- Z5 w
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
! R; M9 m; N7 P9 \2 |Island and to the same house where the pastor ; s/ z6 u: [. L1 c. O& u8 z, y2 O
had taken the woman three days earlier.
' E% C! f' G1 n8 o. p( ]( L3 | z4 V' rHe helped the man climb the three flights of
) D% z7 E$ v+ {0 [# K" A; astairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
l' }8 ?3 |3 s' n" z; n' `the door and he saw the greatest Christmas
' C ?5 y5 t4 K9 V/ C2 ~8 G; {3 ]$ n/ nreunion he could ever imagine., L. N o, }4 B! U: C

cares we know He will see us through.

difficult at best, just remember I'm here % P8 T* G4 ?& K2 d# g, ?% U
