 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason, \4 e% T0 u1 u3 x

- P( e# I) [" a; g8 n The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned ; @% J8 D2 S3 P' @9 Z. P0 ^
to their first ministry, to reopen a church
; G. b5 o7 R, Rin suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
& k& {8 S# x0 V ]/ Dexcited about their opportunities. When they saw
4 A: M: z( W) ]: ]( Btheir church, it was very run down and needed
# o; y) p" F. m v' J3 v' s0 wmuch work. They set a goal to have everything " P5 R2 A3 m+ w8 [9 R
done in time to have their first service ) ~- S% w2 X) q0 G+ C# S) j
on Christmas Eve.
* H3 x: ~. k) q! ^. ]T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
4 ?* m8 t- v7 p3 P8 U- H* Gpainting, etc, and on December 18
2 M* o. r4 n3 \were ahead of schedule and just about finished.
; {9 c% z( R7 d$ k! [O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving t1 H# O6 T+ h0 X _( d. p; [4 \
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
9 {0 Q9 \0 w" \7 a S, U3 ]" k$ b O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
! a, r, Y1 b0 x: p9 hHis heart sank when he saw that the roof had
- g: p" p- ~. s$ H( X3 w4 Cleaked, causing a large area of plaster about ) H% O) |8 N$ j% L; q" |9 B7 l
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
4 i( x' d! C* G% yof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, , z9 ?( d% q3 c, L
beginning about head high.
; C; H" a- q: ^* r, s1 e+ ?T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
6 z+ r5 i9 S+ y( wand not knowing what else to do but postpone
+ c$ {; p& L( d3 ythe Christmas Eve service, headed home. , p8 `/ d4 C4 o4 R
On the way he noticed that a local business was 4 N! |' Z k. M
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he 1 g7 z$ }% u/ E1 f) O g& k
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
! S8 H- E& P* @handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth 3 n2 O- K/ C2 \6 \, f
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
# {1 a! V: c; j- X& ?embroidered right in the center. It was just - l E0 v5 K W9 d3 x) ^7 H4 g
/ ~' A5 ?0 I: p- n% o1 k+ j

) L5 F1 b9 ^" V% V- v5 o p/ P+ l% T5 ?0 Q k% o% ]

* ]' F, z" m, `: Q" h! f) y: y' Nthe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. : r) Q9 N5 `5 o; y: ]- J
B y this time it had started to snow. An older % ]8 K( z1 ~- k) O/ E0 N
woman running from the opposite direction was . @# m: f2 V' C# c4 m
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
/ L' Q8 u, W( D+ z" cinvited her to wait in the warm church for
* p, j! s8 j3 F, a/ Z5 m- kthe next bus 45 minutes later. . R% R/ I! n+ t. f0 g8 C' s% I' }3 w" N
A, ?1 K" J7 ^3 d+ N& VShe sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
0 k9 Z; M1 A/ P5 o4 Iwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put 1 H1 i. J5 L% I8 d8 _4 q
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
# J: ], }" T/ V3 fcould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
1 l' N" g4 D1 ^0 l( ]7 AT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
7 f% H, ~1 B4 p2 Q* K, zaisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"$ N3 `* T, t- z( b8 A2 v: Z5 X
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
$ O; Y K/ R9 J }# I9 x" LThe pastor explained. The woman asked him to check6 p) l2 _; W' ^
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
+ Y7 [. [5 g5 ~( K) mit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had $ I9 ?8 }. F2 I8 B& w3 @
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
& n. t% E7 }( N; q& E0 ~! }T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
5 D4 `/ i; V9 E# V7 {$ Etold how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The " j& k7 U8 \8 X' N0 ?# Z" y; \
woman explained that before the war she and
; Q* D; d* W# ^* F: c2 Cher husband were well-to-do people in Austria . + q9 s3 e" r+ a B0 B% j1 ?

When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
% P- G/ {8 z0 q, E3 \Her husband was going to follow her the next week. ; @0 o& G: X& Q) q
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
! W4 F. [2 a1 b- Ehusband or her home again. 0 _# O( @& z- n' |
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;% [" j3 C# C3 d; h
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.$ L5 |$ \( o* G7 P- d) A
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That
4 ?7 n3 f3 U1 hwas the least he could do. She lived on the other3 W# F% t6 T$ [
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
% o/ Q) f m2 Ifor the day for a housecleaning job." G0 w0 f4 o7 w7 h
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
1 x# B- L% ]5 e7 H2 vEve. The church was almost full. The music and the % k* Z, H7 ^7 P4 e- `8 z9 |1 f( `
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the
! K1 x5 s# I. B" z$ Npastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door / Y( o/ W; Q6 S6 T4 E7 h
and many said that they would return.. ( C* o& l8 ~) h& [! P) e
One older man, whom the pastor recognized $ V9 w l- f( y0 \$ t: Y$ }- N* `- m
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
) x! ^/ r# A* f) O+ S! Spews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
% ~! q' }% p# N( z# [" Z' P8 ~: W8 j# gwasn't leaving.
8 j1 V* P- F4 _) @& p8 PThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on 4 K/ h0 v; i- I5 W
the front wall because it was identical to one
8 V+ F! j" x I' ]7 Wthat his wife had made years ago when ) Z9 a/ P# J" z" u4 ?) _
they lived in Austria before the war and how 5 y9 [: C% G, @. U* d
could there be two tablecloths so much alike?
5 f, b. r2 \/ K5 pH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he 0 o) g9 a0 n l
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was & n" N P' X* ?" Z1 h% A( `% H9 x
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
# M" u) ~+ Y. a8 gput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home- p' s" p! B7 J$ @ Q# E" _9 J- B1 u+ D
again all the 35 years between. " y5 `* q0 ?/ H2 U& e& I9 X5 O
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
2 n5 S% }8 F& }! V: Ntake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
! g3 h" E& e: A e4 s. [Island and to the same house where the pastor 2 _ p9 r3 M. q/ g, N: J; H
had taken the woman three days earlier.
5 r1 P+ ?0 O: T4 NHe helped the man climb the three flights of
. F" m& e w3 ystairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
; z/ o% D6 V/ c+ j# X. N, Bthe door and he saw the greatest Christmas ; K1 ~( d/ S4 p& z: \6 I( p
reunion he could ever imagine.
