 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason* c$ h* F% R2 v$ Z1 b3 ?- O. k

; E) O/ s: L& }7 I3 K3 U The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned - @1 Y0 T6 Z% o) P5 J
to their first ministry, to reopen a church 1 k& ]! H5 |* k6 ], Q# j
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October % v' M9 q9 z0 F$ b# n# u/ Z# F1 s
excited about their opportunities. When they saw Q6 c) @7 `% H6 D
their church, it was very run down and needed
K7 ]$ p2 D amuch work. They set a goal to have everything * J3 ]0 Y/ W* u( e: U" k
done in time to have their first service % _- |# y. g& |2 w+ f- i, F
on Christmas Eve.
( [. L( X2 |) b' B" KT hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
0 {; P9 E) ^8 L! F; b% _painting, etc, and on December 18 1 v2 P @1 n( B" ~% m
were ahead of schedule and just about finished. - N1 r# P2 R2 ~
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving : M2 l4 M( B! b. b& Y6 W$ K
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
. [" d1 j# f3 w. ? O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church. u$ R( P" ~$ a% Y
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had
2 @+ m; R# f9 i& u" Y/ {leaked, causing a large area of plaster about
5 Y' v3 O' }3 {8 S20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall & {0 [: B) F+ a
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, . f: X1 I& d/ ?2 a; Z- k
beginning about head high.
8 _ a1 d! S6 m; s3 [T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
3 j, M1 p2 w: q' ] Oand not knowing what else to do but postpone
: m% A- q5 O% hthe Christmas Eve service, headed home. / w9 c4 i/ b( t9 \7 L' {. |- I
On the way he noticed that a local business was # B) U( S+ x2 i3 ^/ j! b
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he - J/ [2 y1 X o4 u" b- v# n
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
* _1 x: L; A4 ^4 I ehandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
; {. u4 v, j: j' I6 V, Z& ewith exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross ) q4 y7 X+ q8 R. N3 p
embroidered right in the center. It was just
& s+ N0 {( W* j3 U6 H 5 z: p f- i4 V4 E' Y, i$ P
/ X- ^" L7 L# u6 T, }8 B
) A Y) N! c+ `3 D( Q
; r9 N0 `* @4 i; r
' k( E' R/ W/ j$ s1 g
8 {0 w8 F! m: W) P. p9 \5 bthe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
& h0 }4 Y5 S h6 \/ LB y this time it had started to snow. An older
. W9 Q A! r! Z5 swoman running from the opposite direction was
( _, Q& a: y# x+ Strying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor 0 i! _% v3 A9 _3 R1 o. w
invited her to wait in the warm church for + S0 Y' Q& Z4 k. z7 L( ~
the next bus 45 minutes later.

+ S0 y7 \0 k6 {1 PShe sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
7 ~% l- u- @ O6 a# {; I) Nwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put 0 T! ~& u8 T. ?8 V9 b: V1 ?' z6 {7 l
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
/ i/ s- {2 C/ P. e4 L1 j* a3 u; Jcould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. 8 z5 f, x3 o8 i) @: E& a/ U: ]1 W
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center8 L/ {- p1 W; U w( F+ D0 h
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
& Z2 U6 e2 n8 a4 ~& U r lshe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" 8 e; Z1 e. O7 y5 R* Q- {) |
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
* }7 \$ R% f$ fthe lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into L2 R4 w# b7 U1 G. k
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had $ l! d; x$ s, ^
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . ! W* {+ a, K6 B2 n8 y: [' M
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor ; J- R1 `5 F6 q8 z. A9 ~/ V$ A
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
) U' J4 K/ N- Xwoman explained that before the war she and
4 b0 d3 |! v! O: \1 P* L2 {7 R9 aher husband were well-to-do people in Austria . ) V8 y. O( d* |' `& d
/ _ M& [; D0 ~9 p" j# o/ }4 _
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. R2 {1 u4 @2 x0 L
Her husband was going to follow her the next week. , h' i1 ?4 @4 x
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her & [1 f& v+ c3 h" \1 M7 ?5 {. W
husband or her home again.
' r1 U$ A3 _( u( {- ^$ ?5 f2 N5 hT he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
: A" ~( l x# ?' u' W# ^/ Ibut she made the pastor keep it for the church.2 X& K+ ]! v% Y/ A" _8 D
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That2 K6 f( K( G' X5 h' U+ R
was the least he could do. She lived on the other
6 k- L' j" s. n- F1 q3 ^# S Mside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn ! L. [# t" s3 I+ a( M( {, ]/ x
for the day for a housecleaning job.2 a$ S. \1 |0 b. E: v* I
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas ' ^% Y7 `8 g+ E- d3 n* ~4 P
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the ' a2 |! d2 e0 f4 g
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the
& s1 R# ]% C) Z# k) V; opastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
& C) n2 B1 ~) Eand many said that they would return..
$ K1 ~! t, ]- |3 B# {# iOne older man, whom the pastor recognized & G% d& d0 p" h! q: \- c6 Q8 [9 L
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the 1 }" i/ ~3 @0 h8 ]. f( F. m2 `
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
. K; A4 f& r7 k4 y. Y9 A* lwasn't leaving. ' t, `3 {- K9 e
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
5 _2 M5 \9 H9 f/ R. i0 a6 Gthe front wall because it was identical to one
2 ?) r9 |- k3 ^# lthat his wife had made years ago when
2 F6 R7 q$ Q# M0 e/ H3 S& p- |they lived in Austria before the war and how
6 \& K j4 z0 G: Q, Bcould there be two tablecloths so much alike? / L* _8 S! w1 U ]. L
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
: `6 r5 u, X6 Iforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was , a* |0 e/ G% G' v
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
- e' V4 {8 h# G$ Pput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home( S3 ]9 h! `7 ?2 c/ [
again all the 35 years between.
5 C* M5 u$ [1 F( x4 @- eT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to ' g7 f# ^. @" G- G2 d) ?5 w
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten , q3 X5 n T" s. r1 W
Island and to the same house where the pastor
" P2 o; ?5 P" l2 E8 p ?had taken the woman three days earlier.
3 @; ^! T5 N& P' i- k0 ?He helped the man climb the three flights of! f) Y/ r0 r8 g. c' M8 V
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
8 _3 M8 c, T" Q+ Fthe door and he saw the greatest Christmas ( r0 g5 [4 V4 B# x4 G( u
reunion he could ever imagine.
