The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will
* Y4 K" y: u9 A  Y% Z+ tbe the official language of the European Union rather than German, which was
3 b! ^3 A% e# uthe other possibility.

As part of the negotiations, the British Government conceded that English
" [) T( [4 v# x6 k/ b9 Nspelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5 year phase-in
plan that would become known as "EuroEnglish".

In the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c". Sertainly, this will make
9 X; k* M6 C6 j- dthe sivil servants jump with joy.

6 L# s4 G7 g  cThe hard "c" will be dropped in favour of "k". This should klear up
konfusion, and keyboards kan have one less letter.


There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year when the
6 W$ t5 C+ ^4 qtroublesome "ph" will be replaced with "f". This will make words like
* v$ W- R$ X2 j' bfotograf 20% shorter.

In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to
5 M. p' M& r: r2 ]/ m* A# creach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible.

Governments will enkourage the removal of double letters which have always
# B/ b9 [2 {0 A' cben a deterent to akurate speling.

Also, al wil agre that the horibl mes of the silent "e" in the languag is
4 c' W9 h. n4 x7 Z5 jdisgrasful and it should go away.
