' O7 Y+ k5 w) @( s" sFORT MCMURRAY, Alta. - Suncor Energy Inc. (TSX:SU) and two of its contractors are headed to court next month after being charged with dumping partially-treated sewage from two work camps into a northern Alberta river.

7 @8 z, l) M5 x4 c. V* }+ rThe contractors charged are the Compass Group of Canada, which ran the camps, and Rodney McCabe, whose now-defunct company operated the two wastewater plants.2 T( w I: y5 e0 C; k# D
, v) g) u" `3 M# Q& f/ k7 C5 @' ?The charges laid last year under Alberta's Environmental Protection Act include failing to properly treat wastewater and providing false or misleading information to the environment ministry.# U/ g8 v* a) T: B' i
( [3 F( S, K/ D) ]7 Z3 VEnvironment Minister Rob Renner says the charges were laid after a routine audit found problems with the sewage discharge into the Athabasca River.( v0 {: q8 t1 f% p' H! S; _
0 {) K0 Q- Q( OMcCabe and Compass are refusing comment, but a Suncor spokesman says the sewage likely had very little impact on the water quality in the river.

The nearest downstream community is Fort MacKay, but a spokesman for the aboriginal settlement said the 600 residents take their water from another river that's not connected to the Athabasca. |
