FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. - Suncor Energy Inc. (TSX:SU) and two of its contractors are headed to court next month after being charged with dumping partially-treated sewage from two work camps into a northern Alberta river.

The contractors charged are the Compass Group of Canada, which ran the camps, and Rodney McCabe, whose now-defunct company operated the two wastewater plants./ I% e9 e% O* `. r x' P$ i @) t
: U1 p/ s1 K9 a. MThe charges laid last year under Alberta's Environmental Protection Act include failing to properly treat wastewater and providing false or misleading information to the environment ministry.7 h; u2 p+ i9 U% L- |; Y1 R$ b

Environment Minister Rob Renner says the charges were laid after a routine audit found problems with the sewage discharge into the Athabasca River.

The nearest downstream community is Fort MacKay, but a spokesman for the aboriginal settlement said the 600 residents take their water from another river that's not connected to the Athabasca. |
