FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. - Suncor Energy Inc. (TSX:SU) and two of its contractors are headed to court next month after being charged with dumping partially-treated sewage from two work camps into a northern Alberta river.9 x1 M; n& }4 d' \

The contractors charged are the Compass Group of Canada, which ran the camps, and Rodney McCabe, whose now-defunct company operated the two wastewater plants.; ~: ?4 t! \$ l$ U$ z M

The charges laid last year under Alberta's Environmental Protection Act include failing to properly treat wastewater and providing false or misleading information to the environment ministry.7 e3 J+ n0 g. U2 ~/ U- N7 g

Environment Minister Rob Renner says the charges were laid after a routine audit found problems with the sewage discharge into the Athabasca River.

McCabe and Compass are refusing comment, but a Suncor spokesman says the sewage likely had very little impact on the water quality in the river.! Q3 @2 P1 A$ q d/ b

The nearest downstream community is Fort MacKay, but a spokesman for the aboriginal settlement said the 600 residents take their water from another river that's not connected to the Athabasca. |
