FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. - Suncor Energy Inc. (TSX:SU) and two of its contractors are headed to court next month after being charged with dumping partially-treated sewage from two work camps into a northern Alberta river.+ J9 h7 D$ f" p+ F; X3 T. `9 W
! m# v! C2 L: ?* e8 \The contractors charged are the Compass Group of Canada, which ran the camps, and Rodney McCabe, whose now-defunct company operated the two wastewater plants.+ s( Q G0 c' E2 }# v: {' g
) E! S. {: q7 Q, c' E& X& uThe charges laid last year under Alberta's Environmental Protection Act include failing to properly treat wastewater and providing false or misleading information to the environment ministry.. H3 F) g' J! ^; Q" ?0 X

McCabe and Compass are refusing comment, but a Suncor spokesman says the sewage likely had very little impact on the water quality in the river.$ ~" S) p: C. x. G, c; F* h X

The nearest downstream community is Fort MacKay, but a spokesman for the aboriginal settlement said the 600 residents take their water from another river that's not connected to the Athabasca. |
