FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. - Suncor Energy Inc. (TSX:SU) and two of its contractors are headed to court next month after being charged with dumping partially-treated sewage from two work camps into a northern Alberta river.8 S( _3 z9 H, Y+ y) A# O3 _* m

The contractors charged are the Compass Group of Canada, which ran the camps, and Rodney McCabe, whose now-defunct company operated the two wastewater plants.

: ^3 l* j1 |; @ I- H0 F$ fThe charges laid last year under Alberta's Environmental Protection Act include failing to properly treat wastewater and providing false or misleading information to the environment ministry.! l8 W v% a7 _, u9 K% Y- }
$ s# g u7 s; U+ x5 KEnvironment Minister Rob Renner says the charges were laid after a routine audit found problems with the sewage discharge into the Athabasca River.

H6 a# }! f7 ]6 a* w# V0 C* WMcCabe and Compass are refusing comment, but a Suncor spokesman says the sewage likely had very little impact on the water quality in the river.

The nearest downstream community is Fort MacKay, but a spokesman for the aboriginal settlement said the 600 residents take their water from another river that's not connected to the Athabasca. |
