Mayor Stephen Mandel Heads to China for 2009 Winter Universiade5 j1 i% f) S0 H

) |; G" ~# y0 R, {' XMayor Stephen Mandel will be leading an Edmonton delegation to China from February 11 to 18th, as part of an effort to gain support for the City of Edmonton as Canada’s bid for the 2015 Universiade Games.

The Edmonton delegation will take part in opening events for the 2009 Winter Universiade in Harbin in China’s Heilongjiang Province. The Mayor and Edmonton delegation will include City and University of Alberta officials as well as representatives of Edmonton Tourism. In addition to official meetings with the International Federation of University Sports (FISU), the Mayor will be speaking at the 2009 Winter Universiade Sports Science Conference – “Winter Cities, Winter Sports” where he will present an overview of the City of Edmonton’s recreational focus as a Winter City. The Edmonton delegation will also attend Canada Night, where Team Canada will be introduced and the flag bearer for the Opening Ceremonies will be announced.

. b7 _4 g+ e; h% u6 i: X! V$ mWhile in China, the Mayor will also undertake a number of business meetings, including several in Harbin, which is Edmonton’s Sister City. The Mayor will meet with Harbin officials to sign off on a new tourism agreement which aims to boost interactions between the sister cities, and will also be working to further promote relationships between post-secondary institutions in Harbin and Edmonton.

1 O q# i9 [6 b) ^5 q) [The Mayor’s trip will also include visits to the City of Shanghai and the City of Chengdu. Meetings in the two cities will include discussions of tourism and environmental matters and will include meetings with Shanghai 2010 World’s Fair officials. |
