A man is dead after apparently being shot in the back while walking out of an Edmonton-area casino Saturday morning. , r6 ^& x" H: G/ a. n. [

The body of a large, black man could be seen lying face down outside the front entrance of the River Cree Casino just west of the city for most of the day as forensic investigators combed over the scene.

A scared patron said she had a sleepless night after she and others were told to evacuate the casino soon after the shooting around 1:30 a.m. She came across a casino worker who appeared in shock after witnessing the gruesome scene.

“She said some guy had walked out of the casino and this guy just shot him in the back of the head,” said Theresa Haineault. “She didn’t say how many times, just that the guy was shot in the back of the head and another person got hurt.” " u9 D/ R* L- H' @9 u2 G# R6 j
% \* S5 I, w: X3 M% ?8 nStony Plain RCMP would only confirm that a man was killed and that a woman had been taken to hospital where she was in stable condition.

' }: E* f( |& G m5 h- S, @Mounties had already been racing to the casino for reports of a large fight inside the Touch Ultra Lounge – one of the nightspots inside the casino.

The Touch Ultra Lounge has been a focus of problems inside the casino, said Rod Ferguson, who had tried to get into the closed casino Saturday afternoon. He goes to the casino on the Enoch reserve a couple of times every month and said Touch Lounge should have been shut down a long time ago. : k A' R6 I! q4 Z5 |+ T

“It seems like it’s always gangs in there and whatever,” said Ferguson. “We try to enjoy ourselves on a Saturday night and you can’t. It’s loud and they’re fighting. It’s no good.”

. w4 G: @- R% {! NRoy could not confirm if gangs were involved in the killing. While she acknowledged Mounties have been to the lounge for incidents in the past, she said any problems didn’t appear out of the ordinary for such an establishment. + e8 V g/ @; ~9 s, f/ T

“We were in the room and there was a siren and then a voice came on saying there was a fire warning and to standby. So we got ready and then another male voice came on and said to please vacate the building,” said Wayne White, a Manitoban staying at the resort for a wedding this weekend.

0 d3 Q2 i* A% R% DHotel guests were allowed back in their rooms approximately 30 minutes later. Roy was unaware if police had ordered the evacuation.

Police had taped off the entire northeast parking lot. They also set up black barriers around the scene, blocking people from seeing the body, at the request of resort management. * ]- g( M' h( W! m& t: j6 Q0 ^

The casino was gated off at the inside entrance with a sign saying it was closed until further notice. The hotel and restaurant remained open. ' I% e5 l5 ]6 `1 h. v

A poker tournament that was to be taped for broadcast Saturday afternoon on The Score was also delayed. $ P% Q& W( F/ V( m r

An RCMP police dog scoured ditches along Whitemud Drive west of Anthony Henday Drive. Roy couldn’t confirm if a firearm had been recovered or if police had identified suspects. 0 o. J _; i' m" M8 ?2 [( V
+ b- e( B, H& {- g+ R7 X& qThe Edmonton Major Crimes and Forensics units were investigating as well as Stony Plain Mounties and the Stony Plain RCMP drug team. Roy said the drug team was only assisting the investigation and it wasn’t clear if drugs were involved in the killing. 9 ?; f! N; e2 L8 W8 |' x/ H0 P. x7 a* L
# [! s* c2 A3 i7 iPolice have seized numerous videos from casino security cameras and are going through them, said Roy. She said casino staff have cooperated with police. # n0 y; i- z" m+ X, `
