The VERTO Project
  x& N" W* H. l* S4 QThe YOUCAN VERTO Project is a Government of Canada funded project that will
/ y( h+ T+ Q/ p4 ~7 e4 kbring 12 (per intake) at-risk youth together into a unique 20 week group-based
5 L" C8 K  D# x1 F# j0 hemployability skills program entitled “The VERTO Project”; 16 weeks of day
program and 4 weeks of employment exposure. YOUCAN is an acronym that
stands for Youth Organizing to Understand Conflict and Advocate Non-Violence.
YOUCAN has served youth in the Edmonton area for almost six years and our
mission is to equip youth to engage and inspire others to peacefully resolve
  i$ x6 A) h, N6 j7 Lconflicts and develop healthy relationships in their communities. The goal of the
( A6 B% q$ u# p0 R( f9 @/ |1 sVERTO Program is to assist participants in obtaining and maintaining the skills
7 m5 P3 u0 l5 X1 {! R" A' h, snecessary to bring success into their lives. The program is designed to serve
& I( I. g7 `" [youth who have been involved in the justice system. The program will expose
participants to a wide range of components focusing on: employment
development, personal wellness, technology learning, conflict resolution and
) E& t7 p  `8 w2 gexposure courses. Additionally, we will incorporate topics around health and
wellness, volunteerism and leadership courses. The youth will be provided with a
+ t2 R0 f  r, l+ D6 C: X% @6-month employment follow-up once the program is completed.
# ~* y; c5 q+ r- CThe project will run from 9:30-4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday at the Central
YOUCAN office, located at 8718-112 Avenue in Edmonton, Alberta.
The following position is a one-year contract with the possibility of
extension dependant of funding and performance. Resumes will be

1 e, C  L3 T- H8 K• Responsible for building relationships with employers within the
community to partner with YOUCAN to ensure there are employers that are
; W0 w) ]& V& i. G4 x% D5 bwilling to expose youth to the current employment opportunities
• Ensure the youth action plans are reflecting the employment goals as
4 D6 I+ e7 _  W& y, N% A4 fbeing realistic to each youth participant
9 j& [3 Y8 U: I• Work with the youth to find the appropriate training needed to equip the
) i+ B+ u$ ^( e6 ]: qyouth with the necessary skills needed to find the employment suitable to
1 N* m$ U6 e# qeach participant
• Assist youth with employment development including the development of
cover letters and resumes etc.
, e3 U0 t# m/ M+ ]7 ~+ d* T: ]• Coordinate the employment exposure component and on site work
9 r: ^/ w1 f! T' \& H7 \4 d( w% Yexperience of the project, and monitor the progress of each youth at the
# M  X5 n; T* |# b% ^0 Y# Dplacements
• Conduct the 6 month follow up process for each of the youth, evaluating
6 i6 \8 K8 b/ L, Uthe process, and supporting the youth where needed
• Work closely with staff of the Verto Project to ensure the holistic approach
; ^! m6 {* p: u0 q& Tis being fulfilled for each youth
' B3 g' S+ O0 c! B+ t• Administrative tasks, such as phone, fax, filing, copying, etc. that are
4 @$ z" S8 v9 y7 ]! R8 qrelated to YOUCAN’s Verto Project

+ c, K2 o2 r6 i' W' F! F Post-secondary education or 3 years related experience accepted
 A minimum of three years relevant experience is required.
 Enthusiastic and energetic innovator who is process-oriented and committed
to success.
! L- z6 _( z1 W( [( u  ]# q Strong interpersonal and leadership skills.
% R/ |# s8 M0 T* \ Excellent written and verbal communication, presentation, organizational and
time management.
9 X, s+ e& L7 i Strong connections with industry, or the ability to make those connections

8 V( d4 y: r& q  j  _ Strong skills in building relationships with industry and youth
, x# x& x6 ]6 B Experience working with youth at risk, and able to assess the needs of youth
8 S/ \( `) a8 K- R( R2 z/ k5 ~at risk as it pertains to employment
 Skilled in software applications, computers and other office equipment
, \# E0 ]& ^% H+ Z" a, { Strong leadership and active listening skills
