The VERTO Project
The YOUCAN VERTO Project is a Government of Canada funded project that will
( C  D* `2 o- w0 d( s- c3 ]bring 12 (per intake) at-risk youth together into a unique 20 week group-based
5 k: g/ S* ]$ ^( r9 kemployability skills program entitled “The VERTO Project”; 16 weeks of day
2 w% Q3 e8 N9 s8 ~( i1 Aprogram and 4 weeks of employment exposure. YOUCAN is an acronym that
2 j6 y& X1 ?* }, w" wstands for Youth Organizing to Understand Conflict and Advocate Non-Violence.
8 _! J9 ^8 r9 P3 K" |7 c  GYOUCAN has served youth in the Edmonton area for almost six years and our
( s* H, {8 R- E" Omission is to equip youth to engage and inspire others to peacefully resolve
conflicts and develop healthy relationships in their communities. The goal of the
7 \! e: ?1 n1 |" gVERTO Program is to assist participants in obtaining and maintaining the skills
necessary to bring success into their lives. The program is designed to serve
6 h8 z! I0 v( C' ?3 ~' B* `. Pyouth who have been involved in the justice system. The program will expose
participants to a wide range of components focusing on: employment
& e; b0 m. t$ G3 I: ^8 udevelopment, personal wellness, technology learning, conflict resolution and
. c) J/ @+ p% ~: s" [% Fexposure courses. Additionally, we will incorporate topics around health and
. f; {% C, \1 Vwellness, volunteerism and leadership courses. The youth will be provided with a
4 P% j) Z, @/ s! M" D$ N1 i4 e6-month employment follow-up once the program is completed.
The project will run from 9:30-4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday at the Central
YOUCAN office, located at 8718-112 Avenue in Edmonton, Alberta.
) p) R- Z! u! c0 CThe following position is a one-year contract with the possibility of
' I5 [  L* I3 K& Q! o' C3 fextension dependant of funding and performance. Resumes will be

Employment Developer: 1 Full-Time Position (40hrs/week)
• Responsible for building relationships with employers within the
0 o. y, N9 G: `community to partner with YOUCAN to ensure there are employers that are
willing to expose youth to the current employment opportunities
• Ensure the youth action plans are reflecting the employment goals as
& S8 N3 m/ I3 w+ K+ s0 obeing realistic to each youth participant
• Work with the youth to find the appropriate training needed to equip the
1 q. P! M& J8 l  s1 p, nyouth with the necessary skills needed to find the employment suitable to
! _  s6 n; _9 n. @  g# ?each participant
• Assist youth with employment development including the development of
cover letters and resumes etc.
) P' |' K  V6 t2 A0 }1 D/ J• Coordinate the employment exposure component and on site work
9 {4 S/ K- w7 @# q6 `experience of the project, and monitor the progress of each youth at the
0 L  ?! N8 o4 M" t: Q6 e4 Z0 Pplacements
• Conduct the 6 month follow up process for each of the youth, evaluating
the process, and supporting the youth where needed
& E: g9 a' c2 Q# N( J5 F6 H. z, K. A• Work closely with staff of the Verto Project to ensure the holistic approach
is being fulfilled for each youth
6 e0 m6 m& s2 N  z; x- j• Administrative tasks, such as phone, fax, filing, copying, etc. that are
6 u' a4 b8 l1 ]: f! Q! S; C4 yrelated to YOUCAN’s Verto Project
• Other tasks as they arise within the position
Experience Required: Employment Developer
 Post-secondary education or 3 years related experience accepted
7 V" v) m) E% {& ^% `+ J A minimum of three years relevant experience is required.
1 U5 x1 \' P, W+ {" ~) ` Enthusiastic and energetic innovator who is process-oriented and committed

; D* c* N7 z5 @- w Strong interpersonal and leadership skills.
 Excellent written and verbal communication, presentation, organizational and
) d" o) H1 V, C9 g  Atime management.
/ v; }1 a; A& ?$ Y& l& j Strong connections with industry, or the ability to make those connections
' _. T& g8 N" Y( M, g/ C' u4 W5 K$ ?quickly
 Strong skills in building relationships with industry and youth
( e, }  P; k1 N1 P Experience working with youth at risk, and able to assess the needs of youth
7 T  Q. O0 i# h: D+ tat risk as it pertains to employment
! M& h' L2 x) O, K; { Skilled in software applications, computers and other office equipment
 Strong leadership and active listening skills
! Y2 T. J( s# M+ B Ability to motivate youth
