The VERTO Project

3 I: z1 e. o% n) Lbring 12 (per intake) at-risk youth together into a unique 20 week group-based. c8 C I/ F" ^- `
employability skills program entitled “The VERTO Project”; 16 weeks of day
5 ?6 O) Z7 p7 t1 f1 mprogram and 4 weeks of employment exposure. YOUCAN is an acronym that+ H: U3 v" {! h x
stands for Youth Organizing to Understand Conflict and Advocate Non-Violence.+ I0 a, a T* F) s6 T# f
YOUCAN has served youth in the Edmonton area for almost six years and our4 J# K# H! r0 M S/ I/ L+ m
mission is to equip youth to engage and inspire others to peacefully resolve
- y0 }- Z6 P9 V: K+ J/ d: M; f% s0 _conflicts and develop healthy relationships in their communities. The goal of the
) a k* I5 \: z/ Y+ p! Q% GVERTO Program is to assist participants in obtaining and maintaining the skills
& b1 H. p. H" Z: unecessary to bring success into their lives. The program is designed to serve* {5 {/ U' o& |3 g/ A1 }
youth who have been involved in the justice system. The program will expose
& U, H( p/ W% s. b4 y5 b" lparticipants to a wide range of components focusing on: employment
+ z2 j& w. }8 Z( k" vdevelopment, personal wellness, technology learning, conflict resolution and% ^5 i: J3 `( }: i% j8 c
exposure courses. Additionally, we will incorporate topics around health and4 C# _' {1 u& {+ W& n: W: C
wellness, volunteerism and leadership courses. The youth will be provided with a
7 s. W9 a, s$ P% ~: C6-month employment follow-up once the program is completed.( w9 e7 U2 Z D# G% [
The project will run from 9:30-4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday at the Central
! Z: l4 `2 H9 i' _& f; gYOUCAN office, located at 8718-112 Avenue in Edmonton, Alberta.
( e ?0 q3 K( i# l) M0 UThe following position is a one-year contract with the possibility of
% g4 B9 N2 S1 R# l0 J1 d1 Y) kextension dependant of funding and performance. Resumes will be

# ]+ G$ n- v" P+ N4 UEmployment Developer: 1 Full-Time Position (40hrs/week)
; g; |5 n" n! d+ ` E• Responsible for building relationships with employers within the8 \- G9 Z4 _& [/ u, b9 x
community to partner with YOUCAN to ensure there are employers that are
7 ]" t% g; {1 T N; @willing to expose youth to the current employment opportunities' `" i; d+ z) l% r+ X+ ~4 o
• Ensure the youth action plans are reflecting the employment goals as
4 z1 w- Z! M# U* z( [being realistic to each youth participant
" c3 Y+ P2 ^" J6 {• Work with the youth to find the appropriate training needed to equip the
' L1 V. y2 d* _- d( O/ ]youth with the necessary skills needed to find the employment suitable to
) w L; U+ S7 z+ h, Ueach participant1 k0 }/ D3 `! p! k" P* I. S
• Assist youth with employment development including the development of- X/ x8 V2 ~0 R# T! ^) A3 F
cover letters and resumes etc.
* g( P) w+ r; ?# j• Coordinate the employment exposure component and on site work9 q' p5 ]& K9 V. z
experience of the project, and monitor the progress of each youth at the7 ^6 w: T% i8 p; P2 v0 g2 y/ C: h; M5 c
placements% x- U4 q7 }7 b4 b Q7 a; q
• Conduct the 6 month follow up process for each of the youth, evaluating# J( u& w) z! z! [$ w
the process, and supporting the youth where needed4 `3 ?; C3 h6 l& ?: G, x2 I$ ?
• Work closely with staff of the Verto Project to ensure the holistic approach
2 K0 H1 N# e G! n V! c) S" ]; Xis being fulfilled for each youth
8 [/ T3 x2 s2 q8 x$ a• Administrative tasks, such as phone, fax, filing, copying, etc. that are
2 {+ @/ G& ^# l# |' D9 x1 N/ M$ F5 d% hrelated to YOUCAN’s Verto Project

Experience Required: Employment Developer
, z3 C! G2 S, _3 {8 ^& w; k Post-secondary education or 3 years related experience accepted* ?7 r0 h+ r2 H6 P- e" V' i' _
 A minimum of three years relevant experience is required.
+ p* B |3 ^8 H7 N# w- S Enthusiastic and energetic innovator who is process-oriented and committed

 Experience working with youth at risk, and able to assess the needs of youth

 Skilled in software applications, computers and other office equipment( d+ q0 Q5 S1 _4 o
 Strong leadership and active listening skills
