9 w4 D1 _, ]" oHousing price growth accelerated in January for the second straight month, Statistics Canada said Tuesday.

2 }! c6 l* P9 O( }2 i5 ZThe agency said stronger housing markets in Atlantic Canada and the Prairies pushed contractors' selling prices up by 6.5 per cent between January 2007 and January this year, a faster pace than the 12-month increase of 6.2 per cent seen in December.

( Y  r( A5 W6 d* I/ D2 y(Geoff Howe/Canadian Press) Statistics Canada said the December and January accelerations followed 16 months of slowing increases in house prices.

  D, M/ m4 M1 y* u  \5 ?Saskatoon led the nation with an annual price increase of 51.7 per cent, year over year, with higher costs for labour and materials, strong market conditions and higher land demand all cited for the rise.

# Q1 O: B8 X: K7 DThe year-over-year increase in Regina was 25.9 per cent, unchanged from December.

In Halifax, prices rose 11.4 per cent between January 2007 and January this year, while homebuyers in St. John's saw a 12-month gain of 9.1 per cent.
