What activities will I do during my road test?

  P7 K& j$ f+ t0 O5 o8 dThe road test is about 25 to 30 minutes long, including instructions and feedback.
You are required to know and demonstrate:
6 H, G/ m5 j# m' I6 [· how to identify and operate the vehicle controls
· how to do right and left turns legally and safely
· school and/or playground zone times and speed limits
· how to parallel park
· how to hill park (up or down)
$ U0 g5 f. B, b& O· proper lane changing
· how to manage controlled and uncontrolled intersections
. j' A5 t4 I! I. K: e7 H0 x1 w. N
The road test will run the full time unless the Examiner feels that your safety, or the safety of others, is at risk.
For example, if you do not show good judgment of time and distance when turning left in front of oncoming traffic,
the test may be stopped.

Who is my Examiner?
5 a& R# j# J' @# L8 e
· The Examiner will introduce him/herself and provide proof of identification, when requested.
· All Driver Examiners are licensed by Alberta Infrastructure and Transportation under the Driver Training
and Driver Examination Regulation. They are monitored to ensure they provide high quality road
tests. They should be courteous and professional, keeping conversation at all times relevant to the

What do I bring for my road test?

5 i# q+ w  G; H" j· You must have your Learner’s licence. If you have a temporary licence (non-photo)
then you must also provide acceptable photo ID.
· Wear clothing that is practical for driving and comfort. It should be appropriate for the
4 \5 i4 N4 k4 ]. h, Nweather conditions (in case your vehicle breaks down and you have to wait or walk).
· Your vehicle must meet all legal requirements (good mechanical condition, valid
5 A  b  M. ]4 S+ Y, Finsurance and registration) and have enough fuel for at least one hour of driving.
2 H3 i$ b9 _) d' @# y9 R· Payment for the test must be made directly to the Examiner or Registry office.
A receipt will be provided when requested.

The Class 5 Road Test for New Drivers
, ^9 k7 t+ {  KA Driver Examination Checklist will be completed by the Examiner. This document will contain the following
information:
· student name

· operator’s licence number
· testing location
· date of road test
· vehicle licence plate number
5 P) W, s* k0 N· time test commenced and completed
· Examiner’s signature, and Examiner number

The Examiner will do a vehicle check with you. You will be in the driver’s seat and the examiner will ask you to
1 J7 O& C( Y4 b1 Q7 zassist in checking the signal and brake lights, horn, brakes, and steering. You will be asked to describe and
! ]3 @. }/ J. G8 p' d$ W# J' ]demonstrate two of the instruments or controls inside the vehicle, such as the hazard lights and windshield
. Y$ M1 ]3 Z3 E% D9 k7 W. Y; xwipers. The Examiner will provide information before you move the vehicle about the route and the instructions
that you will be given during the test.

While Driving …

· You will be given ample instruction in advance for each manoeuvre and activity.
9 c0 Y8 M2 h2 y. ~+ v% v% m· Points will be assigned for errors. You will be allowed a maximum of 75 points to pass the road test.
You must not do anything that is considered unlawful, dangerous, or unsafe, (for example, speeding or not
- y9 Z: g/ x2 E* N6 T+ Dstopping at a stop sign).
· The Examiner will not try to trick you.
0 L: z% b% F0 @6 n, f· The Examiner will not ask you to do anything illegal.
( u! ^( w* r/ W/ g# C% a6 k· When the road test is finished, the Examiner will highlight the areas you performed well, as well as
the areas you need to improve upon. The points for errors will be explained at this time.

What do I do when I pass my road test?

The Examiner will give you a copy of the Driver Examination Checklist form. You will also be given a copy of the
, ]) G2 I) j( _" i1 @  x; H+ eTest Permit. This will indicate that you have passed. Take this permit, along with your learner’s licence, to any
Alberta Registry Agent to have your licence changed to a Class 5 Probationary Licence. There will be a fee for this

A Teen's Perspective

4 R" o+ g: l7 ~- A, \/ Q) r9 kA licence to drive is a ticket to freedom for teens and for many of their parents.  Sometimes in their excitement to gain this new found freedom, teenagers forget to keep safety and responsibility first. Peer pressure can lead to unsafe driving habits. A new driver may not have enough experience to respond well in an emergency.
) x- [+ ~3 n9 b8 }4 A! f. E
8 D7 U, V( }) z  }9 ]6 F: \! @. N+ n% jHere are a few tips provided by young drivers that might help as you enter the world of driving.

Arrive at school five to ten minutes early and leave five minutes late to avoid the mad dash into and out of the parking lots. Many collisions happen when teens are rushing around.

Watch for kids getting on or off a school bus. If a school bus has stopped and the red lights are flashing - Do Not Pass.  This indicates that the bus is picking up or dropping off passengers.
$ C1 M6 _" s- c6 A# W9 Q
6 S) U6 z; u, ~7 }$ xGo slow - obey the speed limits. Speeding does not get you there quicker and it could get you or someone else killed.

+ B3 V6 Q5 a5 E  o  _8 TWhile you are learning and improving your skills, avoid turning left across busy intersections that do not have left turn traffic light controls. It takes a while to learn how to judge the speed of the oncoming traffic. Eventually this will be easier for you.

+ H, ~" H; V2 k6 Q& ~' \3 oDo not make assumptions about what other drivers are going to do. The only thing you can assume about another driver with a turn signal on is that the turn signal is on. The driver might not be turning.
! n, T) L- h: n" ^
When there is an obstruction in your lane, wait for oncoming traffic to clear before you go around. Just because someone is blocking your lane it does not mean you have the right of way in the next or oncoming lane.

Always wear your seat belt, and make sure all your passengers do as well.

Never try to fit more people than you have seatbelts for in your car.

Do not run red or yellow lights.

Use turn signals to tell other drivers what you are doing. Turn your signal on in time to give the drivers behind time to react before you take the action.

! D+ ?3 U7 ]0 z" O  K+ TWhen the traffic light turns green, make sure vehicles and pedestrians clear the intersection before you go.

Do not drive like you own the road - drive like you own the car.

% c2 X% r% ~4 F. N7 a# V( lKeeping control of a motor vehicle can be challenging in ideal conditions and even more difficult when conditions are less than ideal. Here are a few tips to help you if you must travel in bad weather conditions:

1 s  Q8 t# f( K* x8 CTurn on your headlights whenever you drive, and especially in rain, fog, sleet, freezing rain, or snow. In fog, heavy rain or snow, do not use your high beam headlights as it only makes it harder to see.

3 X7 G& z7 d( `9 E& p4 t% XDouble the space you normally leave between you and the vehicle in front of you. You will need more room to stop on slippery roads than when the pavement is dry.

Brake gently.

+ G3 K5 T7 A0 a6 }. Q7 vBraking in bad weather can be tricky. When braking on wet roads:

+ V' L6 x. U4 L: W6 UIf you have ABS (anti-lock) brakes do not pump the brakes, instead maintain steady pressure.
- U, B0 V4 b, }4 a! {* TIf you skid with non-ABS brakes ease off the brakes to unlock the wheels, then brake again gently without locking the wheels.

Tips for Parents of Teen Drivers
- `9 e8 f: B( g/ s6 B
Your teenagers have been begging you for months to allow them to get their driver's licence. They have taken a driver training course, had plenty of practice, and say they are ready. You know your teenager is a responsible, safety conscious person, and can handle the responsibility of driving a motor vehicle.

Still, your head tells you that attitudes can change when your teenager is confronted with one of the biggest teen challenges - peer pressure.

' ?" U! E5 B8 CTeen attitudes can change rapidly from the moment a teen leaves the house. Some teens rebel against adult standards and regulations. Also, peer pressure, at that moment, can have a much greater influence on decision-making than advice from an adult.

6 |* K: Y$ S6 [0 UTeens are sometimes slower to sense danger. Who has not seen a teen in action and said, "they have no fear of danger"? While you can not control your teenager when he or she leaves the house, there are some things you can do to help ensure their safe return:

Make sure your teen gets as much supervised driving time as possible. Even after getting their licence, supervised driving time will help to reinforce safe and responsible driving habits.

Restrict driving to a limited number of hours per week for the first few months according to ‘time of day’ and some potentially risky situations.

Realize that your teen may act differently driving with you than with their friends. Make sure he or she has had plenty of training before allowing your teen to drive their friends.

& B7 V3 r( y- dBecause your teenager is learning, and driving can be more dangerous after dark, restrict their time behind the wheel to daylight hours.

Start with using approved safety restraint devices, such as seat belts and car seats, on your children every time he or she travels in a vehicle. Set the example yourself by making ‘buckling up’ a habit.

; s1 u# b+ t/ g8 EChoose safe cars for your teens. Muscle cars and teens can be a deadly combination.

Set a zero tolerance policy for car use and alcohol use.  

Did you know? - In Alberta, a parent or guardian, of a person 17 years of age or younger, must give written consent to allow their teen to get a driver’s licence. You can revoke that permission at anytime, and your teen's operator's licence will be cancelled?
