Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

& Q0 a" G! ^" R( kYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
Q. \0 A7 K& \! @Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
; e! {7 ]) Y3 a" w, a/ M$ anews to report from that meeting.
( L% P+ x# P# j) S8 v' [
3 H4 T* d& G$ n1 W+ p/ vFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
( W+ J- a7 K0 d! i" d/ G6 c7 Jundergraduate international students from the increase to the 6 t; h3 H: H! ?+ A! J: [
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
6 m% }& M* n% m' b, q# W. \students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
8 F: H8 M5 |7 ?tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). ! z. V n% W4 V# M
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
5 Y# }+ S9 W" g$ pthe differential for international graduate students., | F* G5 q5 P$ W! O
: w c7 B* p( f: x% [& xNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an ' F) A; j( I! ^( z7 u. [& h8 o
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to ; V u& Q ^3 n, W! d
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students 4 J$ C6 f9 K9 C3 n: `
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
4 \4 O1 U1 Z1 l [* r! I, ?, xleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
2 V1 H: n; x! j8 M- \* U; utuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
c' G) L9 W& Jincreases once they are here.

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
, b( J( o# e/ uinternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I

3 b! N! n! E9 u* U) \; N6 z/ zhave sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this 3 ]) Y, R9 |8 n+ g4 }+ D
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
