Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
1 W+ M" G: q0 Q/ b8 P; I5 UCouncil met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad , {# x/ A! M1 r. A+ }4 v* t
news to report from that meeting.) C" d& z: S, T+ r/ S* U K1 P
1 g. Q* X4 Z! v) @+ B5 ^First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
$ @) W0 G1 a( L! }& K( M" fundergraduate international students from the increase to the ! Q) e# J$ |8 W ]+ {; w1 v
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international ' Q( k( l( `: ?
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base 2 E7 }+ U* ~" h: H& a7 r, d
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). & P" [( E/ U3 V. P7 ~
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
! T. Y1 o$ t1 w& C& G" g# Cthe differential for international graduate students.* p2 J! l4 M* _ m& B( V4 M7 F
5 }' p' f* }: L$ P
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
0 @& _! F' {7 oincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
" G# X0 i( B" n m6 }8 f" T220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students 4 K, P$ V. N4 G2 U0 [
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At % u" G% v2 s) q( v, @+ U5 O
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in 8 T: X$ h2 O& _# z6 V# u3 e
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
( ]! Q6 u5 A. }* l( Tincreases once they are here.8 y- t5 o$ a" F7 w! `6 g

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the / g( @0 i, `% L6 Y; G2 N& h
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
* D) ^' [+ y( w) D: J1 F$ Bwould like to say thank you to all of the international students that
. v4 `" k; v3 h' vhave sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
1 W4 ^8 v5 o5 i$ r+ [* cincrease. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your & G3 ^- n3 x/ M& L+ U2 Y9 b
