' W9 |  V  {) ?& u  {/ c. zGood news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
, r0 `& h) D) }5 DCouncil met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
news to report from that meeting.
4 n/ x2 Y& F7 f+ J2 s( M5 F1 k
  d' y9 e& \$ @: ~1 g8 f1 nFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
' [) z; V3 `( Z6 A) }: |undergraduate international students from the increase to the
+ h6 q% P: k, ~9 m7 l/ ldifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international
$ ^7 N, P1 n# V  W' p4 w1 mstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
" o0 \& e! |  T* @- C  A+ S8 _Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
the differential for international graduate students.

) ?! q" L: f% z6 S8 G7 O4 v5 dNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
8 X9 _/ J* r7 ~0 d' A8 G* C& O1 jincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
3 D2 w* j0 z1 v: ^6 J" q+ l220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
& E0 e1 {+ r& d2 iwill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
7 a0 T9 z" o- A% q5 X4 ktuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
increases once they are here.

! c+ ]3 X8 g+ K# @The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that
- `& v0 m, Q8 V# ~* ^: L$ Uhave sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
8 v- |& _2 p8 ]- g5 |7 k. j6 z0 Mincrease. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
help. Thank you.
