2 p+ s' S: [8 h, k# ~Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. - n" t3 G1 I5 B7 v' x( @

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
) J# q3 m# J1 q& ]8 g0 x7 fCouncil met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
/ u, y: y8 N0 o' I6 P4 Lnews to report from that meeting.4 Y* E/ L- T( L" x. \; L% T& J" C
& w* _9 N1 O" V- ]
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
3 F- |& n1 U+ f6 R2 F- \undergraduate international students from the increase to the
) s8 }) I3 k1 S. V9 k/ [6 Zdifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international
* S/ H/ a! F. B3 O2 Bstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
8 B3 x0 N. i+ e) U! F) ftuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). ' B: Q' h4 o1 j, q/ V
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase # j) x2 X1 m# I+ Q1 p3 G2 t- N
the differential for international graduate students.5 O+ f! I6 X& u# D: P
5 L5 E! ?: ?: R( j5 J, W
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
3 g& C0 t7 i2 k/ _/ Z3 i& y; Mincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
- E) ~3 _# f, A( X( ]- Q220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
" q6 n( H& ?! R, _1 a: Y$ C4 @will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
+ e: [% w' O' r _* r2 C6 }3 gleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
, U- G( W3 U/ `' [( _( atuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected & E5 x5 e) F/ Z8 }
increases once they are here." u/ D) @8 o& U

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
9 I! k: E! e, {* winternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I & ]6 Z/ `3 M- {- u* Z! a# z
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that - r5 u- s6 u! Q+ t
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this 3 @' Q ~; |$ Z" X7 [$ [
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your 7 a/ p8 L/ s- f# \
help. Thank you.
