, k5 T' @1 m2 BGood news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties 7 a, ?8 k/ b& F& E
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
4 i& z1 B$ n% T3 `+ V4 d8 h4 L& Nnews to report from that meeting.

# n8 ?0 J6 R% \3 A) \First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current ' ^. K( y$ Q) H
undergraduate international students from the increase to the 9 | `% |2 j i. U
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international 4 y+ }5 Z+ d. C
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
5 _0 c! A0 U3 R5 u& b& etuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). 0 h1 P/ j3 G( \9 p
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase 5 p% p) j( R" ?/ h) v
the differential for international graduate students.- |* O; s! a# m1 \3 W
1 F# d, R2 \& A3 ]
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
$ a( ^ X4 L! Z4 C+ b9 }8 G) Uincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to 6 ?7 L0 A4 T* [7 O# M L' W
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students # }+ C# ?! t- W n0 U6 q1 l
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
" H T; V1 O4 }+ _: J7 u. p) e, Ileast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
' s' A$ M4 _; ^# w/ I8 C3 v. Y: {+ Ttuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected ! A% z+ s+ N B: ~' C* z: \
increases once they are here.: g v6 Q7 ?# b5 z
( y& i; {$ v8 v$ G) {) D! O `The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
5 \6 S) k; o$ dinternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
) H" h; H7 `) o A, a* gwould like to say thank you to all of the international students that : ]9 |# [0 w1 _3 T; C: [% c
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this f: i/ G% z, V& `
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your " K# `# g" i. v2 S7 X2 I
