: M1 U% r2 x; O! p, F/ LGood news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
6 @$ P. x0 A! B8 m. l4 {; W% M2 D% Bnews to report from that meeting.

, D" z1 z- ^0 Q3 Z1 OFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
; [! S/ ~6 f+ |undergraduate international students from the increase to the
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
. i) R9 b- E: d0 e# ?: p- Vstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
: z5 L5 T# U8 e2 ?$ {0 B* S! ctuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
7 b- Y3 O. M9 w! Y6 rthe differential for international graduate students.

  P8 O: ?5 w! s7 R! y- XNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
) s9 {( g8 G, a8 L( x! |8 ~! Fleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
increases once they are here.

$ F' R9 n' @! b: S. {7 [% lThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
7 {6 c# n; I( p. E( @1 [" zwould like to say thank you to all of the international students that
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
, |/ Q  Q. o% l1 d8 Pincrease. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
