Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
) k2 m$ j* X, R+ v7 HCouncil met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
1 J+ S, N1 E- S7 f3 J' _news to report from that meeting.

, c3 f2 Q) l5 S/ L/ U# y: |First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
undergraduate international students from the increase to the
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
9 P) q9 A) Q. T6 ~; o) {/ j8 N) Astudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
' o1 ~( x# ^2 X  {; G& N0 {/ utuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
& O; }9 f* I% F- lAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
the differential for international graduate students.
5 B* P' X. [7 Q# {2 U8 U0 N
" p( z" C% I0 z$ h6 \3 q' {Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
/ G  v" v% n2 Zleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
" z& y0 e5 ^1 P2 X8 v2 ctuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
increases once they are here.

" K! f, c+ R* U& fThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
: }- b2 @. d/ zwould like to say thank you to all of the international students that
4 k( ~6 k% y9 `7 n, N. [have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
help. Thank you.
