The trade people deserve better pay and better work condition. Many of them have to work in a not so ideal work condition and away from family for a long period of time. A lot of people probably don't know that many of the trade people can not get a job that they can work for year long. I know quite a few electricians who can only find work for half a year. If the trade peoples go on strike, some of the big projects (such as oil sand related) may not go ahead on schedule, which means less work for other people too. So it's hard to say how it is going to affect the housing market. Affordability is the major issue for the people who yet own a house. But the dispute will be resolved sooner or later, either by negotiation or arbitration. The market will run its course. Don't worry about it.

One of my tenant is a millwright. He is only 22, and working for $35/h. Most of his co-workers get $40-45/h.
Really don't know how much more they will ask for this time. Anyway, I can sure increase my rent at least 15% when the lease is due.

If you know the real estate market in FM, you will not say moving there.
Tons of people cannot even find the place to rent (close to 0% vacacy rate). House price is a lot expensive that Edmonton.
One IT department in a big oil company has moved to Edmonton last month.

You said some of the trades people can work half year, you mean they couldn't find a job for the half year or they have earned too much already and want to take rest for half a year. I think trades people in north america are earning too much. much higher paid than many office and professional jobs which demand years of university studies.
