JOB SUMMARY:  The Chief Returning Officer reports to the President of  
6 P& e9 @" n  m5 I# _the Students' Union and oversees all electoral logistics as per Bylaw  ' G  ]2 G" \" V) U$ v7 f: }
2000.  The Chief Returning Officer shall be recommended to Students'  
4 r0 ?* [, ^- Q% M9 F, r2 cCouncil in the manner set out in the Council Administration Committee  
+ |4 }* e5 p# v0 Q  SStanding Orders by April 15 and serve from May 1 to April 30 of the  : k/ d% J( ]2 }+ ?9 G5 N" @
year following their appointment.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:- D* F# a% n0 F" a# b

1) To run the elections as per Bylaws 2000
# e0 Y9 t  q% k5 v
' f4 `# X- a4 {9 ?5 @' a2) To run referenda/plebiscites as per Bylaw 2000.. k0 a4 ^4 S  v/ M! p0 I2 f

3 o/ ^( P8 X# X; u* j3) To choose the Deputy Returning Officer(s) and assign their duties.! D- j/ Q% X3 Y/ o0 V
2 m; c# s, c5 d  D: S1 r
4) To organize polls during elections/referenda, including appointing  8 R7 G0 G7 ~1 _, r/ @. f1 ~
adequate poll staff and situating polls at appropriate locations  
$ Q1 p% F6 C1 C8 n, pacross campus, and advertising the poll locations.
5 |6 O3 n* C. [. E3 }' _: c7 x$ g3 g0 {" a& j
5) To oversee the physical count of the ballots during elections/
$ t9 u  g: o) O8 h* p8 nreferenda.
4 D9 h& k/ X. [4 w# W! K# y7 [+ T& r/ g0 x7 n; `/ K
6) To report the result of an election/referendum to the appropriate  
1 e- S7 ]* {: J: S/ {! M2 xparties.

* X9 P  `' ?/ P6 ~6 x7) To facilitate classroom speaking arrangements during an election/
. Q: {& h# |% h; ^( r8 Ureferendum.

2 Y+ f- K& \" b8 U! I9 S To enforce budgetary regulations as stipulated in the Elections  % e8 N* j8 V+ l$ b/ k
Bylaw 2000.
$ s+ ?# ~' `7 F, |$ \! F7 E* c% ?3 q: b' V. C2 _  u
10) To be available to all parties during elections/referenda for a  ! j; {" G- T) ]" S
minimum of four (4) working hours a day, between Monday to Friday,  6 y' {  T5 R5 @' Z7 f
from the first working day after nominations close until the last day  & I# c, x" ^9 t' }( }! W
of voting.  These hours are to be posted in advance.
9 t8 W, i/ q2 Q0 T) h
( Z! V) t  S$ C4 H2 Z, n11) To act as the arbitrator in any dispute which may arise during  # t6 ?+ x! ^4 h
the course of an election/referendum.# ?8 |1 ~# x1 J
5 O# M! A. Y, y  ^, s* \3 h5 ~
12) To ensure that a cost effective and accurate ballot counting  9 I8 v( @$ ?" ?# f$ Q6 w
process is in place.6 ]7 J8 ^) Z! w7 a+ p' W

9 Q. @( V8 M' f  ~7 N13) To submit to Students' Council, prior to April 30, a final report  ( F+ u4 y# l9 N* L
of activities and recommendations.
4 w* `" R+ n" d+ B4 p$ s; k
1 }, j$ C* o! Z/ q  |" T14) To organize a minimum of one (1) forum to be held during the week  
" _; K4 N; I% a& bof campaigning.5 z3 g$ P' n' I3 L

15) Perform other job related duties as required by the Council  8 g' \; T3 k4 W( w$ u

( `, L& l/ o0 _! H4 v( I( w9 z1 EQUALIFICATIONS:
& d3 a# e7 E3 Y6 q( E) T4 W& c( @% o# E3 I# ]8 f& G
1) Must be an undergrad student registered in at least one (1) course  . I, K4 h6 b( O( C. s0 r, F
for each of the terms of Winter Session and shall be a full Students'  
3 O, O0 M4 [) W* }0 \2 q' G3 YUnion member.
# |+ B; l. o: P1 Z# P/ @# Z6 Z% H9 W& z! V* i6 Q5 @* V* l
2) Must have some experience in student elections.
8 M, I! ^6 i) \  y) A) p  }& A0 ]6 Z! Y* L% _' @( U" k
3) Shall not concurrently hold a position on Students' Council, or    N- G6 R$ E9 f# E( i. ^' J
any of its standing boards, committees, or any other paid position  - z+ c3 U$ y2 a* @" k( x7 F
with the Students' Union., d8 o+ I$ ~) `* x6 N8 B) C( h& m

% z- l3 S% h( o( c2 m' Q4) Willingness and ability to work varying hours.
$ m$ z4 e: e0 Y$ m$ o( Z4 B
5 D) H# p1 m4 r# {$ }5) Excellent project management skills are required.

staff, students and the general public.
