Students at the University of Alberta have voted in favour of mandatory bus passes, a move that will cost students an extra $75 every term.8 w9 o* d" z$ u8 ~

A vote held earlier in the week saw 84 per cent of students in favour of the passes, which will be mandatory regardless of whether or not they ride on transit. T# a& F* l2 h3 i

Getting to this point took five years of debate and negotiations, said U of A student union president Samantha Power on Friday.

Power said the U-Pass will be environmentally friendly by encouraging more students to use transit, and those who already buy monthly passes will save about $300 a year when the new pass kicks in next fall.
