Today I was volunteering at a post office. A man in an old jacket with uncombed hair came to the counter. He had a wallet in his hand, and put it on the counter. He told me: 1 g- y, R! Z p1 B( v
"I am going to send it back". / R; ]$ R( p5 h% u; {+ {4 l7 N; g
I did not understand what he meant by "it", because usually people would send a letter or a parcel back to the sender, and I did not see he had any of those. So I asked him:
; @. U5 x. _! Y! J! U% u) d' a2 a "I am sorry, what are you sending back?"
" V# p$ v! }4 t; j# KHe said, "the Wallet, I am sending back the wallet." Then he added: "I am going to pay the postage."
9 e" @) Z- l, a! S"Oh, you found a wallet, and you are going to send it back to the person who lost it?"
& f$ M, E5 V' L3 F$ O- }- `"Yes, I did.") K1 E8 b) y% _: p& c
Finally I understood: this dishevelled man found a wallet, and he was going to return it to the owner by post.
: }" T8 t5 [: W( y* }- cHe took the ID card from the wallet, and showed me the address of the loser of the wallet. I saw there were several one-hundred bills in the wallet. # a, L4 P- O% v# Y) N. m( g! W3 w+ z
"Are you going to take some money from the wallet to pay the postage?"
1 u g: {1 _( s3 p: h8 z"No, I am not. I do not do those things."
& s7 ^# ~! l2 w% IHe took out his wallet, which was nearly worn-out, small, and almost empty. There were some coins inside.
2 N7 T+ D0 K% e( k" zI gave him a bubbled envelope, and instructed him where to write the addresses. He wrote the owner's address, but stopped at writing a return address. He asked:! N2 p/ ], T# X! c' f. s
"Is it okay that I do not write this part?"; j+ P7 {& P) J$ K; C. R
"Yes, you may." I thought he must want to be a nameless hero. But he said:- a( u$ _1 r, v7 T
"I do not have an address."
! z' l+ O5 v& E3 w7 N) S$ H& o, q* vI was surprised: "oh, where do you live?" g# Z" K7 q+ U! t/ p$ w8 ^5 J4 ?
He did not look up, and said: "I do not have a home."
1 {2 i7 y. y4 c- s2 e) ^My heart had a sudden jump. I realized that this is a homeless man who found money but was sending it back to the person who lost it. - ^& p, \. u L0 }5 R( C
He did not a posses a home, but he had a big heart. He had the precious fortune of being a man of integrity. * @$ |9 }& B+ l" H
