I'd like to invite people to join our new Community Dialogue project.
8 y) v ]& p$ e0 E2 dIn phase 1 we have a couple of extra spots available for Community
& Y/ f. }. o$ E% T; ~- b6 bEngagement Training.
* Z) I8 h5 Y' o: b; }# O2 p% p% p( O, i4 y) }
We can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,
. W" ~& n# Z& ]1 P(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood
3 |. b, a. s- K+ Y1 C% Ggroups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work: ], I" G9 F" Y6 K5 A! M# Q
together across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy' F9 N& X, v$ R! a7 `
Communities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000.3 P* r7 h, i* H1 \# q) h

Set on the remote Papua New Guinea Island of Bougainville in the South: t: O5 u/ }& @. \# s D" q6 X
Pacific, "Bougainville Sky" is the story of how music helped overcome years. o3 \1 s/ f5 H0 U4 S- r' I
of fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter6 a0 m5 M" h: g9 m, U
conflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the
4 w) _& u; r# E8 P: u4 u: \+ Xinternational community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:* L5 B: i1 X/ _; [* r& X
they come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter; ?. P6 _& F* a6 H* C9 j
Iain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the) [* R' ^+ k( ^- L
island and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed
" p+ ^: d- x; W. T% ^8 \8 L/ \5 Finternational peacekeeping operation.
' x) K4 I$ X2 y* l2 v( l2 i
! l# n; ^) [ ?$ Y2 x9 NThis beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their
L& d; n" W$ O! @* jown story and captures the struggles, the strength and the humor of a people2 N' b0 o9 p$ b3 @
who brought themselves back from the chaos of war. At a time when our TV4 @0 {5 l5 B6 E$ W
screens are filled with images from the interventions in Iraq and
% I0 F, s8 T" h6 A8 _. B* xAfghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems. i3 g0 j" m3 `: y a
improbable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs7 z' k2 [/ w/ g( L
and music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!

* o- D+ O( E7 k" P4 }, kAccording to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the& D* O2 {- H# I, u/ t& i; z
success of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole
8 I* L) e% K' m: ]: I% S' a4 F. ~) [process, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the7 e& _) M' b' j; y! v+ @4 Y
hands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around.
1 o* e+ M& J5 j* ~4 o, E6 yAlso, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything,
