I'd like to invite people to join our new Community Dialogue project.9 |, l [ m& i1 Y
In phase 1 we have a couple of extra spots available for Community* R# `% z9 \+ b' h) _
Engagement Training.

We can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,
" [; |" B- T; K6 }" ~. y(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood2 u; y. U* E' p1 R0 Q- r
groups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work
# L* X' I! j$ a( btogether across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy
' C8 g8 t P- u/ KCommunities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000.

Pacific, "Bougainville Sky" is the story of how music helped overcome years& u. S% y- H% t) [! i) [
of fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter/ z a, M2 q3 x3 {) J
conflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the
+ p& R- R" ]3 C% d0 h& Q& Zinternational community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:" ]& E* C. Y0 E+ ^( N* A
they come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter, s. U, q/ h8 X' n0 p3 d' ~
Iain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the, R$ F" m! z y# H, i u2 j- X
island and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed
9 [( |8 D1 j& [! \8 _; |international peacekeeping operation.$ ~ Z ~. \) q' |$ Y
A1 z, ]; P* x- F! P( qThis beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their
4 k; P7 l5 t* ~' A! j- X2 R: Nown story and captures the struggles, the strength and the humor of a people- }' X- j/ G3 \3 l$ j
who brought themselves back from the chaos of war. At a time when our TV
5 a/ l& N3 v2 P3 d) R, j- @9 _screens are filled with images from the interventions in Iraq and: V* V, a& d/ T. W( ~9 |
Afghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems
; L& k. b' y1 u3 D" _( l) `improbable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs
: i$ ?, G# U8 k) nand music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!/ |3 }+ [: G. L+ y" t* u
# Z: }4 s- q, i; V9 @$ k1 SAccording to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the9 a. _5 E$ Q* I0 z" [7 P
success of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole/ u$ i# f8 J! o3 F( H0 r {6 y. e- r
process, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the
, j: X9 H! Z$ E9 N# B1 Vhands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around." | \) p' v$ H9 d4 D/ W# x
Also, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything,8 T2 E# H9 V$ ` W% f' c( _4 ?
so we learned to communicate instead. That's where music came in."
