In phase 1 we have a couple of extra spots available for Community; j2 _& h5 [. o* |7 J
Engagement Training.

We can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,
. Q3 S2 ~) N" M! e4 l8 v$ g! n(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood
& D1 g, {" d% I1 zgroups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work
+ A. [: G8 X7 A2 ~# Htogether across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy
- P H" K6 y, s3 ZCommunities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000.: h& [ u1 G. @

Pacific, "Bougainville Sky" is the story of how music helped overcome years
" h! V H# e7 ^' D0 Iof fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter* p6 ` X# v6 Q& p0 O! a( }
conflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the' a9 ?- w8 a4 @. O: Z0 i3 a2 B
international community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:
+ t8 W5 k! Z* [" m" c- Uthey come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter1 r5 L a9 p1 m
Iain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the- r3 N5 i3 r0 T! B( h3 ^8 P6 i
island and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed
% _( `4 _3 z/ F/ ginternational peacekeeping operation.3 V; h* i- e& Z6 ~) M5 u" X/ g

This beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their

Afghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems
9 D1 Y# ?! P, N3 r: c2 mimprobable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs5 d1 E7 H5 w" j$ h+ B
and music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!

% ^$ {) u7 i8 {According to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the
5 v+ X6 {' n2 G Bsuccess of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole
, p% U3 y0 w, A/ o4 l' _9 q' Z. |process, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the
$ j7 w1 l; e5 t5 @& H" O- Ahands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around.

so we learned to communicate instead. That's where music came in."
