In phase 1 we have a couple of extra spots available for Community' _3 x- W N: b6 w# E* Q
Engagement Training.

We can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,
. B* z! [0 |# K# j(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood
- \4 p1 F8 l, c! n1 m' Vgroups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work8 M6 {# Q* a a" U) J+ o n
together across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy
3 a2 S! Z+ D* v7 Y! l8 `Communities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000.

Synopsis:

Set on the remote Papua New Guinea Island of Bougainville in the South
" O5 M1 ^6 l. A, t$ L1 u4 SPacific, "Bougainville Sky" is the story of how music helped overcome years
: c- d) J1 ] L) @0 U4 Wof fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter% M i4 Z$ S s" i( P3 Q
conflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the3 d* ]9 _( e9 L2 n8 ?
international community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:- b; Q+ s: L- Q* r3 |, Z, J
they come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter
& M# r* ?6 W% R2 Y! sIain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the
) Y) r4 b W/ xisland and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed
9 U8 H& {5 n6 Qinternational peacekeeping operation.
0 G# \ w3 l4 Z3 g% T- y/ Y, Q) u( v( m( P
This beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their
1 z; n3 u7 n0 ?4 T7 [" jown story and captures the struggles, the strength and the humor of a people; ]2 H* d G# }' E. E) d( `
who brought themselves back from the chaos of war. At a time when our TV% k0 D* Q5 x* W+ d: O; @& W: Y
screens are filled with images from the interventions in Iraq and
* r- ~3 d& `4 w; |- A- KAfghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems
5 O) l$ }7 {, [4 V4 X, e* L4 t9 oimprobable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs1 U7 a$ Z& T# b4 i2 c
and music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked! Z& y" ~& g- ~7 U+ t, n9 y
' v q8 h6 a G t
According to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the
1 C2 \9 x# h' Z% a' Isuccess of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole( X& `( ~3 J/ X s& t' p; K
process, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the# m8 h$ ]- {& j) F2 C
hands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around.
, u! C. B4 }* C3 I6 jAlso, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything,
: Y: a& [- P' A0 l7 T" W K$ ]so we learned to communicate instead. That's where music came in."# b, j/ O& F# c# t# f/ L
