* r% A) M/ }, D9 Q: l　　A hundred leagues locked in ice,

/ d/ x+ n$ E3 U8 U( U, x　　A thousand leagues of whirling snow.

　　Both sides of the Great Wall
) R( S$ @9 o% P
　　One single white immensity.
/ q( D& s$ c- m6 U, e1 r& j$ l
　　The Yellow River"s swift current

　　Is stilled from end to end.
1 @% e+ s% R( N! M5 C
" A3 B: ^3 d% k# r  `/ V9 x: ]　　The mountains dance like silver snakes
  {5 V0 z- P" f" b- y, N+ g
- j+ m+ x+ M6 N, ]* B　　And the highlands* charge like wax-hued elephants,

　　Vying with heaven in stature.

　　On a fine day, the land,

　　Clad in white, adorned in red,
4 o1 Z! q3 b1 I# K
1 h9 Y% B0 z9 ~" t+ N6 K" N　　Grows more enchanting.

! z) k; q$ H3 d　　This land so rich in beauty

　　Has made countless heroes bow in homage.

　　But alas! Chin Shih-huang and Han Wu-ti

5 s' P0 ~7 t4 h( `5 C4 o4 @　　Were lacking in literary grace,

　　And Tang Tai-tsung and Sung Tai-tsu

　　Had little poetry in their souls;
　　And Genghis Khan,

2 z5 F$ x1 s0 S) x　　Proud Son of Heaven for a day,

　　Knew only shooting eagles, bow outstretched

　　All are past and gone!

　　For truly great men
