　　North country scene:

! m- \/ c1 }5 ]" u　　A hundred leagues locked in ice,

　　A thousand leagues of whirling snow.

. ]8 ~6 }) T9 P4 Y% s7 s　　Both sides of the Great Wall

　　One single white immensity.

% V' a& |4 A; S0 u　　The Yellow River"s swift current

　　Is stilled from end to end.

　　The mountains dance like silver snakes

8 n2 _* O4 {, Z+ e7 s8 Z　　And the highlands* charge like wax-hued elephants,

" [$ ?* B% u) K7 C: H! T4 a　　Vying with heaven in stature.

　　On a fine day, the land,

　　Clad in white, adorned in red,

　　This land so rich in beauty

, _& j( ]- h2 {& I; ^1 x- h　　Has made countless heroes bow in homage.

　　But alas! Chin Shih-huang and Han Wu-ti

　　Were lacking in literary grace,

: j9 }- {4 Y7 a6 Q% `0 B% Z4 N1 v　　And Tang Tai-tsung and Sung Tai-tsu

　　Had little poetry in their souls;
　　And Genghis Khan,

; r/ s2 c1 m7 w  j$ S　　Proud Son of Heaven for a day,
) r) X& Q+ V+ t- g" _! S7 c
1 o7 W/ I% Y3 h; ~" i( y　　Knew only shooting eagles, bow outstretched

　　All are past and gone!

/ r3 `% a8 q. \  W; C5 x$ u. c/ t　　For truly great men

　　Look to this age alone.
