* b% X1 N2 b1 D' V) o' r- B' K& _% V" A- u% `
As a result, immigration and controversial laws around citizenship are coming up a bit more often on the doors, say candidates.
& y: s h5 V* m% E; W& mConservative candidate Tim Uppal said his party has an excellent record on welcoming newcomers.
; @4 L" _, T$ Y# a1 m! K( j' `0 d6 U
“Under this government, we have had the highest levels of sustained immigration in Canadian history,” he said.

Uppal also defends bill C-24, legislation that allows the government to strip citizenship from dual citizens convicted of terrorism or treason. He said when someone has been convicted and served their time of a charge as serious as terrorism it’s common sense to deport them.( c/ o. v+ Z8 g+ Z* V, Z
“If we can have their citizenship stripped, because they’re a dual citizen, than I would rather not have them in this country,” he said.

Liberal candidate Amarjeet Sohi said the Conservative bill is discriminatory, treating Canadians with dual citizenship as unequal.- W/ O/ @9 w0 H& C- E
“It will not make us safe,” he said. “Every Canadian should be treated the same, you can’t have different punishments for the same crime.”

“If you deport a terrorist to another country, where there may not be any rule of law, where they can create havoc in that country, how does that make the world a safe place?”
