each morning by eight o'clock, with his hair fashionably coifed and
0 S' Z3 r4 ^" T) v. ]7 ^shaved perfectly applied, even though he is legally blind, moved to a , S* ^& t0 a7 ?* S$ Z+ p1 b0 ^" x0 E
nursing home today. ! }( C$ k7 H7 p& u
2 _, G% ^) J3 L8 e/ B4 r1 C* r7 ^His wife of 70 years recently passed away, making the move necessary.
5 N* `/ I/ b. r {3 p8 {After many hours of waiting patiently in the lobby of the nursing home,
9 i |6 y1 u+ g% Ohe smiled sweetly when told his room was ready. ( E( o$ M' }" y8 ]$ C) {1 B4 w
) c0 A/ R; ~. v" q: M/ lAs he maneuvered his walker to the elevator, I provided a visual
) e, w. F" C8 q1 Y1 _0 `description of his tiny room, including the eyelet sheets that had been
' S8 W% G- A: T$ ahung on his window.
* x/ J$ f; b, W/ ^- K/ R7 A& `6 R
"I love it," he stated with the enthusiasm of an eight-year-old having
`% `+ H* K: S( F# D2 Y9 \just been presented with a new puppy.
$ I5 |3 N/ }1 X, }1 @2 c: H( Q- H' G9 p% u$ }+ O5 G
"Mr. Jones, you haven't seen the room; just wait."
) P8 m# Z$ F/ Y8 N) Z+ t3 ^- ~& k8 s6 M1 l C' o: b
"That doesn't have anything to do with it," he replied. - w2 b3 `, [) }" N' f1 e
( A& f9 C3 Z" l0 J% j"Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my
% w( [% y; R, W# g- ~$ Xroom or not doesn't depend on how the furniture is arranged ... it's how
) v7 [3 o, s+ x: J3 s. @I arrange my mind. I already decided to love it."

It's a decision I make every morning when I wake up. & g% l3 }# F3 O* G
( O: z" b* f0 K5 SI have a choice; I can spend the day in bed recounting the difficulty I
0 W' q( ` s; [+ T+ r9 x1 Jhave with the parts of my body that no longer work, or get out of bed
, L! c, N: X3 M# k h8 S9 Z6 _and be thankful for the ones that do. ( g; [2 R* @9 R: v. X+ q" D2 K# |

Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open I'll focus on the new 6 _9 R% ~3 p* o1 v
day and all the happy memories I've stored away. ; i% y8 M+ A4 c
9 @; J7 }# V+ _7 x( fJust for this time in my life.

Old age is like a bank account. You withdraw from what you've put in.

So, my advice to you would be to deposit a lot of happiness in the bank $ z- r( d+ m# Z) Z0 |* o
