I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I
, H4 u/ H8 o2 P! _am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”," n, ]0 [$ I1 J
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and3 X% z* m9 ~9 v! P3 ]9 Y
attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
# f# z7 o6 A; i- dwill acquire language earlier and faster.
% h" {( E% @2 h6 H3 G- h9 B- k) V* \! ^" M9 V
In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately) a9 _+ [ Q( x) B' s
30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop1 m' @) |8 ^' ?5 B: y
videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
' r+ m1 a% g* _% u2 |simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
* t# ~2 t* A1 A F7 u1 Cmay say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your2 ]: p) {" A" f2 P" c; B9 H
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.. i. H' b/ V$ F* q
r# M- W- j6 Y; g- _- ^; h y
At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common' ?* r/ M& Y3 q& P' o
behaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and
. o5 k4 a( H/ x7 B( b3 h# z5 n: E4 lthose that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.

Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously$ R. D5 |1 {* Z0 O3 C! q8 v
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby
, c$ n/ g B/ b/ |% E! m* Mknows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to
6 I+ |" f# V$ z1 g. ]those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.

7 @% f: Z7 V0 R# }- d1 M, FFinally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,& E: A) ]4 p _1 v
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.

The entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done
' K$ g0 \7 X+ W, d+ k0 lover the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she
( a# A' T- H. {5 \% Lis 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will4 u8 h2 u& {& D& t( ]8 `9 ?
take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate. e5 @3 {* }2 N O' y; P

As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data& M5 a2 v7 C A- |4 k* V3 x
are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show# W! M* \$ z4 l
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used
! p; |: |, j- v+ s8 x Qin the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and4 j& b% F, X5 i+ e
destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,2 h, \: q5 i/ @7 B* Y8 w
and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of
; x. G1 O% E- e/ O4 F% d7 \9 t) {Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific
$ S# g! a, o! yjournals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child
