% t- ?( p5 ~0 c+ K$ \Immigrant women and their families can now access a “household toolkit” crafted by a local service group for new immigrant families, through real estate agents. * B" B* w( H X' d

In the tool kit are 75 common hand tools – like a hammer and screwdriver – as well a book on how to buy a home, a home maintenance schedule and other items. , `' Q* P) a% Z3 ]+ a8 f2 p

“The tools are a symbol of hope for people trying to build new lives in Edmonton,” said Madeline Sarafinchan, president of the Edmonton Real Estate Board. 3 @7 }+ Y( l8 `* T

The program was announced by a group called Changing Together… A Centre for Immigrant Women. + q; W( ~- P% z! x" X3 v

Josephine Pallard, the group’s executive director, said Alberta’s economic boom has caused a housing shortage that makes it more difficult for immigrants to find a place to live and integrate into Canadian society.
