Insurance required

4 s p: U. k0 E6 gExcept as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall/ l, P2 M$ b& ?0 K
not do any of the following:
, Z# x. p0 K2 @& G(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor$ g) _2 A! p% m
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;+ L# X6 X5 L! N- b. k
(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor
; q" K: U# m7 h( i% Ovehicle is an insured motor vehicle;3 Z- q( L1 y2 |' W$ \: g* C
(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle,% G, P; k8 f# M
permit another person6 |: o" ~$ }. |/ P c
(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or$ u7 l: `+ @7 P+ J( \6 P/ k/ ]
(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway," \- I5 b8 U C3 o- @) d
unless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
+ J0 W h2 T- p3 ^- i1 D(d) give or lend a financial' U+ V' M, b! B, a* {! Z1 c
responsibility card or a copy of it
5 ^; F5 A! N0 g, Z* C' M b& T6 ito a person not entitled to have that financial

1 P! Q+ n2 K1 [* A* U+ V3 }: uIf a person drives or has a motor vehicle on a highway

1 m2 _- F' W4 O* |; I: N. Jthe vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection) z* r; c3 `9 L4 m
(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is

If the registration of a motor vehicle is suspended under this# P! {* @% @; z. C' ~2 V, y% A+ N) w
Act, the motor vehicle is still registered for the purposes of this

1 N" L/ D$ J) X* PSubsection (1)(a) and (b) do not apply to a person to whom a! p$ Q/ v2 ~, |
financial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the
" B: g1 }9 a/ Y7 w- o7 k! N$ M7 L! tInsurance Act
( ~, Y v3 ]% B( \: w1 rby an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy
. N- G+ f& J1 |outside Alberta.
( k& g9 p' d% B. U3 U7 T(4)
3 V) R- f& \" J( BA person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection
. w+ x" ^ z! J C# I(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable,
" I6 j6 V4 ~# a5 E7 R(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $25004 v6 K0 x8 V4 d7 b1 I
and not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to ]+ R) x+ x* M. G* q! R
imprisonment for a term of not less than 45 days and not0 x" y: \! P% e7 y9 D, m
more than 6 months
4 u! L" u/ I5 J5 Q, V' m! s- U* o3 A% QMinimum $2500, if you don't pay, you will go to jail for a minimum of 45 days. |
