Stephen Harper's great-great uncle

Judy Harper an amateur genealogy researcher in Northern Ontario, was0 E  U6 H0 N. K  c3 u# G9 w
doing some personal work on her own family tree. She discovered that
- ^$ @. h8 f) ~/ f' XPrime Minister Stephen Harper's great-great uncle, Remus Rudd, was. |- N. W- j$ n/ H( P1 g$ V# \( R; a
hanged for horse stealing and train robbery in Winnipeg in 1889. Both
/ _9 \: z# U1 L6 `Judy and Stephen Harper share this common ancestor.
/ ]  y2 a2 a% s7 k 4 H  r& D% I( _( T' B
The only known photograph of Remus shows him standing on the gallows at
( L, a, n6 D' mthe Manitoba Provincial Jail.

On the back of the picture Judy obtained during her research is this/ L0 M. n$ u4 n) y, I  i2 ~

'Remus Rudd horse thief, sent to Stony Mountain Jail 1885, escaped
& U& t7 r% T3 O1 m) |1887, robbed the CP AND CN trains six times.3 h! j/ c  j9 ~& ^
0 ~8 o9 X& a6 }
Caught by Mounted Police Force, convicted and hanged in 1889.'2 ~$ A* \. w# u7 Z2 s& C

* c9 I4 X# P5 T+ ?; N5 u3 b1 g/ z# aSo Judy recently e-mailed Prime Minister Harper for information about- v* m8 o' t, B+ T1 E, N
their great-great uncle, Remus Rudd.- N5 G9 w- T2 X$ r$ L

: b) n% X. F! i2 e7 o/ ?Believe it or not, Harper's staff sent back the following biographical: w$ n( S2 s8 N4 t: B/ x  o0 |
sketch for her genealogy research:

"Remus Rudd was famous in Ontario during the mid to late 1800s. His4 d1 E$ L/ D! C
business empire grew to include acquisition of valuable equestrian
7 b4 g2 s2 f4 E  lassets and intimate dealings with the CP and CN Railways..3 D0 F; I# h' }( ^
2 G# m/ q& {% E/ u8 g; v
! B  }; F- \9 k4 f; E
Beginning in 1883, he devoted several years of his life to government! ]0 d* K; S- J6 U* K% Y6 O
service, finally taking leave to resume his dealings with the railroads.! x3 T) _8 C9 @5 C0 i4 C/ D

4 s6 _$ Q6 b5 a7 ~In 1887, he was a key player in a vital investigation run by the Mounted
- X1 N8 O+ M6 d% a& M. y1 L& QPolice Force. In 1889, Remus passed away during an important civic2 e+ E8 j2 k- _$ |# h4 u
function held in his honour when the platform upon which he was standing, c* @% X+ ^+ H2 |
collapsed."
