5 u; L% `3 N5 l) f* i9 g" q5 m: Z8 Z: z/ d7 Q
        1. I couldn't care less. % ~! ?, O* I: K5 H/ S$ o

0 V' q( j: i, V  这句话的意思是“我不在乎”,“缺乏兴趣”(lack of interest),也就是:I don''t care at all. 或 I don''t give a hoot. 例如:
* v) J& ~, i. @, J3 x6 e" Z  R+ d+ B  e
What do you think of the budget-cut?(你对预算削减有何看法?)
5 o( v0 A, m- {6 f7 m, N9 q& [9 v/ J# J) q* a4 K- A: ~
6 ?( Z7 H: |' `# W, x0 U' c6 Z2 p% P* b% X5 ]: c- P9 H
  How do you like Mr. Lee's political point of view?(你喜欢李先生的政见吗?)
/ e! T' E4 C  F
: Q6 W2 I8 {- w0 m6 n  I couldn't care less.(我才不在乎呢!)
! v! m% q& i( V8 d! e
! `7 p- G1 D- @9 F% i4 E  但是有时说话者也有口是心非: 例如: # ?. r0 L3 t) ]: P
$ I/ O9 _5 h7 }, j; _6 E3 x8 C. u- o
  I couldn't care less about the promotion or pay raise.(我不在乎升级或加薪)
6 D8 x/ m; s0 z" [! e6 h8 T  m0 U, U1 K. k' E, y7 v8 |3 G
Yes, you do(care).
2 E1 {# }/ K1 C6 i) M
9 Y! a  |5 b0 U& Z  至于 I couldn't care more. 就是“我很在乎”(I care a lot.)或 I care deeply. B% Z4 |/ K" `0 v! ?
2 R% i0 V: l$ {+ s, z
  I couldn't agree more.=I totally agree.(我完全同意)
5 Z: @% C8 @1 s8 T8 y3 j& l1 @0 R7 r6 g: Q$ w% k/ T
  I couldn't please you more.=I did my best to please you.(我尽量使你高兴)
0 o. \3 L+ O' |: j! W& |! ~3 a2 r7 l2 ^+ W, Q* {1 x
  I couldn't be more right.=I am totally right. 7 T$ L- j# Z, j) e' i. ^

8 ^8 h+ M' P" y6 ~) X  但是老外为了自尊,不愿强调自己的错误,所以很少人说:   r7 y' j8 Y2 q  X( V7 _" ~5 I

* Z+ }: P  z5 L& K& @' V- H  I couldn't be more wrong. 5 L4 \3 _( _% J, X7 A" r5 [5 |  P
+ u( w  p4 u; O, ^0 \
I could care less. = I care to some degree.(care 的程度可能减少) 7 ]1 K* T4 P# h6 Q& G6 m

' s& a% u; f: K  I could care more.=I care some.(care的程度也许增加)(主词可用任何人称代名词:he, she, you, we, they 等。但只用 could,不用 can。)
- [' k7 r8 a, g3 C
$ M" q# m1 C; ~  2. No bones about it.
) r& W$ [% m6 C9 v5 t/ k. b, ^- E! ^, ^; Z/ ~
  意思是:真实的,诚恳的(truly, sincerely or exactly),也就是 to make no bones about it.(bone 要加 s, it 是指 something)例如:
$ p8 Y+ u0 u+ s; F3 M7 t. |; M) c6 b& K" H! v* @  ^: m
  His wife is beautiful;no bones about it.(他的太太真是很漂亮) - ]$ o+ z. D( A( \- J1 f' i4 A

# ^8 g/ f  E  r0 {  Mr. A made no bones about it when he talked about abortion issue.(当 A 先生谈到堕胎问题时,他是诚恳的。)
1 `8 @7 v: \, R9 I8 ^" h" W; u9 O5 y+ W$ U0 d# ?; C9 }. o3 m5 L; ?& |
  When I spoke on the topic,he said, "No bones about it."(也就是他同意我的看法)
9 p5 g3 m3 ~; }9 I. @4 k! w( Y
0 X5 H2 C& ~2 c) V* @  No bones about it;the weather is very chilly today.(今天是真的太冷了) . B5 O$ [2 n  @% M4 |7 M

; m# J: e! b8 o* _+ M, g  3. take it on me!
) Y! h  R9 Z- ?& A9 C% a
1 S4 c$ I2 G( w# d+ k9 m! Y" S+ z  意思是:“这是我的,请用吧!”“这是免费的”(help yourself to it; it is free),这多半是指吃的东西或一些不贵重的东西。例如:
. n- k& w. M7 ]% H+ O- D
" [! D9 ]8 ?6 g1 X1 D- N4 ?  Here are some candies from England; take one on me. (这是来自英国的糖果,尝一个吧!) (one = candy)
& [+ t$ L: m  y  o- C" |' y8 K- N$ i, L! @# M
  The restaurant owner said to me, "Take the dessert on me." / }) d) ^. T" g1 m) u; ~
2 t# v& C" R' s: E0 H$ m
  Please take these pencils on me.(取用一些我的铅笔吧!) # N+ }9 n% D4 W2 }% E
) J* m, J4 S" t/ ?; i; k5 K
9 g" n" @5 j/ @% [( l- C
$ q( w! ^( }5 Y5 f7 V  (假如夫妇在一起,也可以说:Take it on us.) ' H1 u2 P. L) C% W$ l, {5 }7 C7 G
5 v4 [) J4 _1 N( T& ]
  4. I am from Missouri. ( n8 w6 ~' w, ?
( m  E2 K$ n- `! i2 m! K; G6 b: Y( w2 v
  这句话有时后面要加一句:“I need to be shown.”或“You have got to show me.”,意思是 Missouri 州的人很固执 (stubborn),不太信任别人,一定要人家证明一下(prove it to me),所以密苏里州也被称为“The Show Me State”。 - p) _' {; i2 `6 S

# }6 S  y$ b* Z% R& O. n  据说这句话所以流行 (尤其在美国中西部) 是因为美国一些名人都住过密苏里州,包括 Harry Truman, Mark Twain, Walt Disney 等。后来老外不轻易相信别人时,就使用这句话。(也有半开玩笑性质) 例如:
* d& R1 R6 s" L, i+ \8 \# d6 c+ @1 s5 m8 N4 m* M
  He is not easily convinced because he is from Missouri. - y* d& ~, p1 X6 W8 i
/ L  S3 V% F- Z+ L
  Don''t try to fool me; I am from Missouri.(You have got to show me.) 2 G. Y2 O) i1 S8 H5 R

5 X' T+ H; i' ^+ ^  We are all from Missouri; we need to be shown.
3 L0 f& s5 H0 `4 y6 i  n$ C
( v' U$ e/ R) R2 D) s4 B  As Mr. Smith is a tough guy; he must be from Missouri.
