2 m7 y6 Y/ R1 k$ A! }The Edmonton Police Service is warning the public about an on-going computer scam known as ransomware.

7 t" C( z9 K7 C5 C# I* YRansomware is essentially a threat to your computer unless you pay an external company. a* @( t! k2 |3 C# O

Several reports have been received by the EPS where computer users are claiming they are receiving pop-up messages asking for immediate payment otherwise they would be “locked out” of their computers.
* L3 I9 r9 f- A4 E( m; j
0 ?8 ~7 L& w1 X* EIt has been reported that these pop-up warning messages are claiming to come from a Canadian police or government agency. The message tells computer users to pay $100 via Ukash (a payment service provider) so that their computers can be “unlocked.”

" ~, O y1 Q. D4 o! Q; o* i“Often these pop-up messages appear after a user attempts to download something off the internet,” says Staff Sgt. Dan Service with Economic Crimes Section. “The download activates “malware” or a type of virus which creates a pop-up message asking for payment.” 0 z& n H! p- p6 t# Y' `
1 e( t1 q* N* T: V; O) L$ GRansomware scams are designed to create shock and anxiety so computer users respond by sending money quickly to prevent being locked out of their computer.

- e1 U1 T3 x; N+ c) o2 p- z; E1 zIf you receive one of these messages, please be aware that:
: K1 A9 E! \9 r+ c. d8 W, T! @* v( l! r) J& i
•the ransomware is an attempt to defraud you. 2 s+ F3 \- L$ v' ?. W
•sending money will not fix your computer – it will remain locked. DO NOT SEND MONEY.
$ G. \/ V+ X4 ~3 G; a•neither police nor any Canadian government agency would hijack computers in order to obtain money.
( v, \( H- C1 p, |% E. G•the ransomware is hard evidence that your computer has been infected by malicious software (malware) that must be dealt with. ( ?# u# E% n- B! ^. D0 A/ [
The recommended way to re-gain access to your computer is to seek the help of a computer technician who can remove the malware.
