You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,
; ]& {7 @7 E4 C8 z! `6 @& H' f1 z! j1 l- {# M0 N5 b4 @# \
I saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.
! |1 _" K1 f+ V& {5 E  v
9 j5 E5 z/ Z$ fHis name was Kyle.
! @, t1 n! K+ n$ W" o: R. V
1 c# d" ?$ G- |9 ^0 t9 SIt looked like he was carrying all of his
5 U5 G; ]2 ~& e4 K8 K# s/ XBooks.
6 p" B2 l" L! p, x3 ^! _, e) ], x
' l) B' J& ~- c. @  ?: Y/ x! B7 cI thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?
9 w3 T& _! K: F. ]1 A& F+ x. b
% o+ [, [- O0 p4 d" c1 nHe must really be a nerd."0 B  i: S: \3 ~7 `1 d% K% l

) l# v9 A- i1 h' f, ~) |! RI had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.7 z. [) q* d8 x# u8 O

: a% h' B, C! t$ Y! c5 v2 [' a( aAs I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.
) F- M8 f; k4 }2 z, e7 x- x( y& g
' F$ m+ \! Y( lThey ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.) t2 p; j' g; ^0 T

7 @6 _5 ]- D1 U4 }8 HHis glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.7 x& K& h5 U! M1 H3 R

0 P- `5 ~7 ]  t9 m6 m8 q& dHe looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes7 N+ I% T$ S8 W, J
) S- e4 e3 O  f  m  Q
My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.
- L0 D7 j) r( K0 }5 T/ ?7 y, |" f' p% o0 p% d- f
As I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.
$ M  v- M1 M- r6 [3 U
( R! @- D- F3 x7 E7 M; X2 UThey really should get lives.2 p- l7 ^8 ]$ W# h5 Y$ Q0 A% e9 @1 Z

5 m* k" r( v& D5 ^: H* {" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"9 Z; @/ G) S, N4 u7 h' p( |
: j2 j6 w! k# r0 u8 n  c* e
There was a big smile on his face.
7 s6 f" |2 \1 f/ m3 J: l/ v. K! ?7 L4 C6 N; P. ^5 S0 f/ {3 ~
It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.# ^" [# L. n# x: v+ ]6 |
' M* P, q+ A! a5 w
I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.
- Y9 u! {' e; d  P
; g$ J5 w+ X; i2 F8 y: c$ nAs it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.
0 X* j- i( c2 s, e, m  F& |) U2 j7 ?8 i# e1 }
He said he had gone to private school before now.8 c4 d+ v. Y7 H9 p$ G+ O; u  k" w, E+ E
5 d* v& K) W. c. {) m0 @1 q
I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.3 U1 m6 L/ @3 }( U4 i4 V$ D  e

- z0 \5 H& ?0 V1 l# @& N6 }We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.# {' e1 U+ X+ x9 g, {9 C4 [3 {
8 B$ p, Z9 W/ p9 e8 E% s( r
He turned out to be a pretty cool kid.
! M! N" q% q! n9 F: {/ D5 c& O7 ^6 S7 h0 c  z5 p
I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.0 w4 o. x  B1 C( \! y7 _: @2 D
2 M/ G# ^* H1 n5 u* N& c5 V; ~
He said yes.
9 s$ z; ~- ^( H: Y# h2 a; u$ J; @3 N# i
We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.
3 j5 Z4 |- j9 {9 ?. ?
* |! |2 o  [. t! L3 zMonday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.+ u  u3 y7 D2 B1 h
% ]% v% F8 A) b4 y2 q
I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!" O. W) ~" ~* U8 t
* M! }, P& M$ s6 {+ N8 U1 D
" He just laughed and handed me half the books.+ [3 @' X+ E; |) |/ c( K

- i9 _/ Q2 r# P; b- EOver the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.0 w2 U7 O- w4 r# u# m) M# b/ m) D- j$ v

( K- z; v( w2 y+ p3 }# pWhen we were seniors, we began to think$ t- A/ @. H* I8 \8 p1 a7 t; K
About college.
: `6 V' M. @4 j# k' x* e- K8 H
2 n+ r, G4 Q  o- E2 P) ]( j$ BKyle decided on Georgetown, and I- Y* q7 q3 s" X
Was going to Duke./ h- E) q. O, C9 {3 O: E( M# R
( v/ L7 \6 [7 y2 W% I9 l7 u
I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.

2 S  G7 J% ]$ KHe was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.) {7 O1 \% l/ N5 K
' }  J5 O& v' ^) y9 z$ G$ v
Kyle was valedictorian of our class.
9 _$ G! N, J7 ]& d5 k2 `* m* r) O+ a5 d4 _% b& X. {" u- {* H
I teased him all the time about being a nerd.+ U! L7 k  J. L& T
& `1 h& X# o  ~: ?
He had to prepare a speech for graduation.
9 n; @  ?  ^0 ]" z( a+ B+ C2 @$ @' T- D1 o; R1 h' J* ~) V
I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak
# `1 d6 ?0 c+ b
  ^0 j. O+ N9 y; {. `( }8 uGraduation day, I saw Kyle.7 y. V  x" X. O4 _% t' @9 I& O9 {4 T
4 o( R1 z0 A5 x
He looked great.* B4 L1 I4 a5 M/ e6 w5 |: a
# U5 @8 z& Y: l$ I+ ?
He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.
  _$ [# a( z! Z& y4 f, o
7 p: p% s3 c8 jHe filled out and actually looked good in glasses.4 m, q7 @2 ]: @
% X& P% b) N, ^' o* W8 k- }5 u& ?
He had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.  X& a$ Q" p% P0 M- _

+ f8 q7 q. v& SBoy, sometimes I was jealous.' @# B& M8 }: Z
3 V# n6 t- B& m1 X
Today was one of those days.
6 v8 a7 y6 N: b0 O
2 u) B# [2 A& l. ~" O; [& w. _I could see that he was nervous about his speech.
' J) P' H6 @5 ]9 o
' e. N6 Q7 v  A4 o! a& XSo, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"
) K# D- |# `6 C* e2 U4 d/ y, S9 C9 `! }
He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.
# O% X- R/ Z1 H# t% l1 V8 [8 A. M# g' H- a
"Thanks," he said.
3 v! w; H" O4 K" Y# a) u
* c/ y0 r8 F/ L( IAs he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began
  N  B0 R  _% Z# L! ]; ?
# S; ^$ v+ D8 l3 g, f, }"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.7 \& }  z, t- c& ~6 A
5 h, m5 b1 ?- c8 ]) d3 m! ~
Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...* G3 M4 @+ R5 E$ P
7 T! J" e, d" b: c  M
I am here to tell all of you that being a. m$ t8 |6 K: \; S" F7 e0 P
Friend to someone is the best gift you can give them.
+ Z7 q4 q0 R: M' @, V, I
" ], \3 q8 V4 l: DI am going to tell you a story."  p- a2 D1 k! v4 {

$ E+ T5 V7 l, a) T' sI just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.
5 H% [( Q, d" }! |: p+ q3 `- g: I# X" o3 [4 Z4 B! Y8 p
He had planned to kill himself over the weekend.
3 N  V( }9 i) u  e9 o  n6 M6 |7 n0 z7 r
He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.
2 P( d$ A' _& S& ?* K3 w" p) T& f3 G
He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.
! D, I! h3 c1 x. K. U4 j0 P* S8 T0 ?9 M( H5 W8 g1 C# d4 m! S
"Thankfully, I was saved.
8 R! J& m4 J* K0 |$ J) l  d; \- ]0 E
My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."  q+ Z( I! J8 {! z- B  y4 `6 u

" e# v7 }; O& rI heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.
# e. _; J/ I; q. t, Y
- I2 E7 ?/ O. n7 X4 x: wI saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.( a8 e/ E+ {7 p- d

- o; l) d1 ?9 I1 I$ PNot until that moment did I realize it's depth.
' A: y& p$ M4 x" z9 \1 ?
, C/ @$ r% e  I' i' ^4 j; _Never underestimate the power of your actions.' f# p& Z; e- ?6 C$ G. v. }+ C

! ]( l. E6 y7 D1 [! o2 y! a& SWith one small gesture you can change a person's life.8 V6 d7 y( x+ p6 \2 }, q

: _) n1 M% y4 ?) k( K3 `' ~For better or for worse., g: P0 m8 B3 O- C. z
" t) V8 H/ Q1 _: L9 Q/ m+ ~# ?8 v+ x
God puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.0 w* b2 E- O' S0 f8 I, K

" U5 z; a3 N- e0 K4 z; G8 MLook for God in others.
+ t) t0 O2 G5 H8 |' Y! o, m/ A0 v) |9 H2 }9 @& _" v
You now have two choices, you can:
! v1 W) u0 q. ~/ K0 d; ~- e
0 B/ ]8 N0 k3 y( i: }- y1) Pass this on to your friends or
- T8 B, z- N( }. {4 K% {
3 s. Q4 U( V# @% z' }. U2 P2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.
+ B4 M- f/ S6 ]# X8 z" h  e# ~7 h- h" K& E
As you can see, I took choice number 1.* g- t0 U* |; v( g
"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."

There is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.

. H0 O: w- G9 U( a& G4 c$ b' K# M& bTomorrow is mystery.- U/ d1 k4 v, u6 n7 C" I9 D) l' z3 |
5 W/ I: f4 P' G9 s8 L
Today is a gift.7 _# r) E, v- _8 E% k$ b
