You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,
+ b" U( G. f. ~# ]  S" q
) Q* e, o# E; Z% U: E) b4 bI saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.
/ s9 X& {9 b+ f1 Y! v' W* S) @1 ]. B' ~* A% r( ^; u
His name was Kyle.
" |7 q; B7 \5 r# k# u  V; z! E+ i: n- _- l! t6 D- V2 j
It looked like he was carrying all of his
/ W/ I* T6 D, L2 M6 C+ u2 aBooks.* a' h* y8 U( Y) K( X8 o
1 |6 N! f. `$ v! c9 s
I thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?) u' d# Z( F; k7 j

4 o; ^" U: t; s& q8 oHe must really be a nerd."
6 Q/ \9 n6 u- h* s! W3 W! ~) h4 s" e' p2 v8 c+ `- z7 y3 l
I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.. b- W" k) M& t6 R( I) _

! K- z) o7 z7 k* KAs I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.
% W0 s  i7 N$ L, W
' g/ h: E6 i: J  V/ H! IThey ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.  Q  J0 j" J6 J2 I! z

5 \9 e' w; J/ b" h5 aHis glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.1 x  @1 o) }# q5 b
4 _) E9 _" d" a
He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes- v% `' l5 `! v* r9 ]* f) q' v# L

3 W$ a, w; A# E0 qMy heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.( w: ~3 ]1 }, P# p& Y

8 W5 s+ l0 T: c! NAs I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.0 r& t) x: D0 A0 U" ?% T6 l) O; ~

4 ~. D' k2 s* v7 D# B  h1 x/ `They really should get lives.
# }( M) b# U- [
& F4 A8 x) `. e- Y# o9 @" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"$ c, E$ m2 s. m4 W' U) W' L' z

7 G" `- t% \/ |! f- g& {There was a big smile on his face.
0 X& O( U5 `' L3 W5 S. @+ c' `/ D& Z  q0 N
It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.: G: `8 x$ d! j) b& q
6 c# v. ^2 V1 |. l
I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.
) H: s! f8 T; N# z# n0 b7 i% G  L) d
As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.. L4 K) v* N: |0 Z: O6 U

* j" t  T1 @8 ]2 q6 ^He said he had gone to private school before now.) e. n* N. P' |8 F* d1 s

5 l, [. \) q/ c2 g' A0 kI would have never hung out with a private school kid before.* Q% R& `; i! |2 U# v8 W

- N( w8 H3 \7 ]- DWe talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.
+ Z5 X0 T) s( _
  g3 P/ N7 S  l% g: N# Q& UHe turned out to be a pretty cool kid.
$ n* E- E3 X- h( b; C
/ q9 c4 U& N. p$ C' uI asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.
" o/ s. z% ~- a' W5 G2 s
' U* ^8 d% T1 p2 E5 z! \: CHe said yes.
7 z4 |5 M6 |) {0 \' t6 G- |9 z( n: n, g- E9 J; b5 Y* I* x  o' ^+ _
We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.( v. G7 P; K, H) @' r% @) E  F

* t# L6 H7 |% n. vMonday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.
+ P/ _  `+ O; \4 x" s8 O  ?0 D4 _' N( D' S
I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!& R7 R; p  S8 n: C

  S" Z6 i' ~, z/ p" P: ?8 p9 E/ L4 l" He just laughed and handed me half the books.. i/ S/ a$ T7 P* f; ?- {; c

: [- ]6 x" S& ?7 W* a8 KOver the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.7 W; N- P1 Q1 d' n- ]

  E+ f: m  L$ v* f3 g" t$ NWhen we were seniors, we began to think
  C' Y. b# R) ^% x% OAbout college.
# M: t& U% h9 d( M; A9 C) V
& {. @% n4 A' ?3 S" B3 }+ JKyle decided on Georgetown, and I
( _. ~: S5 l, }1 G1 |1 G( ~Was going to Duke." A5 N6 b. R8 |
8 X7 J$ ^( X; E, v- ~$ D
I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.- K' g$ V* U/ ^8 G

; F1 B4 G2 R4 NHe was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.
% M+ n1 r, |# t( k4 T. l$ D: M# }% i; S, e1 h. z) g
Kyle was valedictorian of our class.5 Z+ ?) ?! `7 M' F; h

! T) M2 |* a. h& EI teased him all the time about being a nerd.
6 G& r; \: q7 E
, U7 \) {1 D4 ^& j5 i5 ^5 g+ ZHe had to prepare a speech for graduation.4 h' m0 I# N* V6 K/ R
  X; y0 ?) y) r
I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak
( m4 ]& o' }* z$ r2 T3 g% p, w2 ^2 O' M. `
Graduation day, I saw Kyle./ D* {: F: C' d; c! Q
% L/ S' o+ {# J2 U
He looked great.
) H$ Q8 h2 T- B/ n. v5 }. s- X  A
$ Z2 G, E+ t* t$ ]3 a# Z9 `- qHe was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.
1 p2 X. [( y: M) x, G* I/ U4 q1 [' \3 V9 i
He filled out and actually looked good in glasses.
+ T+ ~- b) ~  u- _) ]
6 ^9 b6 H  m0 u9 g. E! e1 R3 XHe had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.
" Y7 J  m5 N4 S" _+ Q- |7 c- x0 k6 _# {
Boy, sometimes I was jealous.. g8 }/ {. R7 P& _

7 `9 V5 b- }2 M& r2 ?5 d+ EToday was one of those days.
6 \- a. ?( T- R7 L; O+ z$ P+ S& @$ \$ V1 ~6 l. q
I could see that he was nervous about his speech.% \1 N6 Q! O! D8 N% L' l8 f3 f

) p" N1 @+ D" ]# t# YSo, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"
$ ?7 L5 a! l8 p6 U: o* J8 B2 [6 q: n
' p, Z  r% x5 Z( Y' ?He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.2 P3 u, ~( R' Z
; v6 {4 b0 w$ z+ V
"Thanks," he said.  r6 D# h9 N( S4 e" ?  ~5 |
7 X6 h8 X. H/ g3 X5 Y( `  D  O, ]
As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began. ^8 D; t( @0 m4 E9 Z$ x* F9 V
* ?- e! @) _- Q" |# }
"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.
' A& _3 ?5 n& _4 X( x% u8 i+ ^6 A1 B* p4 |- d8 W' B. ]
Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...
5 A& i; F( |1 @$ a# o' a  t) d! u# ~. v, K3 L; T
I am here to tell all of you that being a
/ o* }5 [& j1 JFriend to someone is the best gift you can give them.$ M! ^6 z0 G; @" b  A$ H- T! _
& j8 C0 X7 ]) ^8 S: K# O
I am going to tell you a story."6 X( t) b6 D0 t( \- P) T, P2 J

! S* n& r; G! v  ~I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.
  O2 P, I6 I7 j# Z, h- g; Z$ M' G3 p6 V2 z/ I, C7 D
He had planned to kill himself over the weekend.% V3 x4 y+ a2 L) ~5 W: U9 d
5 a2 G2 {6 P/ S
He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.
$ w  H6 G- w/ u& c! E- z, d5 t" K8 \. \0 o$ P5 Q
He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.
$ a' M4 }! h# Q% c7 p( |: y* c  w5 F5 F* x' z3 C' F) [
"Thankfully, I was saved.: Y( m7 f& M5 d! ~: z7 C
' j; e1 X/ \0 x) I
My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."3 p# D- v. }" B: S# d2 ^

6 P% K8 G! L4 |; |4 E& MI heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.! W! |4 W5 |. P7 W+ u! d+ i

* n, n0 G/ P7 M9 p- `1 ?2 J. @: H  i. dI saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.
$ a, D* e* W2 y' B( T
% p: q4 c- e. c& s3 ?3 O$ d  g! PNot until that moment did I realize it's depth.- w% D9 a# g0 X% L
+ |1 K: S  }; D/ o1 ]7 i( q1 s
Never underestimate the power of your actions.1 J( u8 U/ t% y7 H# Q- g0 x0 z

+ G" q" ]7 U, I6 s9 h2 A9 LWith one small gesture you can change a person's life.) N! r7 t# }% X' o2 r

2 n" L! n: p+ B7 Z6 l6 wFor better or for worse.. P/ A$ Z0 g3 \" P, O' l! m4 p* s
# y( E0 v1 y" K6 ?
God puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way." I. Z4 L' p1 I- d0 `$ q: G

. W% J# ^- _$ ?. ]1 D7 ^! ~# H4 @% e
You now have two choices, you can:- k7 ^2 B4 N# \# a3 d2 x

1) Pass this on to your friends or
/ d, g; d  E  m
5 {) I: E  n4 ~# g8 V2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.2 Q3 ~$ S1 g/ V  u) R

As you can see, I took choice number 1.6 C/ a+ Q1 q: U! }; s$ X
"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."

4 s" Z: R: o) ?. j! a8 z9 g) rThere is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.* |  |% A2 }6 ?

4 K+ k$ I, ~1 B; [5 b8 Z1 D5 w: iToday is a gift.

Today is a gift.
