One day, when I was a freshman in high school,

I saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.( ? p1 \( w: b' h" ]+ p

His name was Kyle.

It looked like he was carrying all of his

& K/ Y C; X/ `1 a
I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.3 P3 m7 c' F: W* g( x( s

As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.' w2 b% h; i% R. [ z2 ~6 c3 L
/ i2 }* s6 G& |% E7 T5 ?
They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.

6 N, C! {. P# }His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.

! ], L1 d$ t! M: A* ?1 u7 s% YHe looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes3 j7 ^3 ~ n# Y) y S7 _9 G( l
. F/ i7 P( O: j* C& p$ d0 H( ]4 C
My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.4 }9 T0 I H W" y
, T& \/ l2 H& E$ Q$ o9 |As I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.9 e, ~+ B" B7 r+ Z5 }9 \
2 s" m) P+ C/ N9 y+ UThey really should get lives.

" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"

There was a big smile on his face.

It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.* R7 b) u7 @1 d/ t0 O& S
/ l' u5 ]! J- R, v6 s/ v N% WI helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived., i/ Z- A' O/ O+ C1 b+ ?

As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.

7 Z/ u* q; f7 ^) |% \ p5 a" R9 SHe said he had gone to private school before now.

; x2 R2 w* X. L5 I# o" l+ NI would have never hung out with a private school kid before.

d3 D# V. x8 k% j. YWe talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.$ k9 Y$ ]3 r' Q* M4 Y0 W

He turned out to be a pretty cool kid.* Z. g6 [( M- a* U- h

I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.0 L' N5 l' U8 |

We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.

# p+ X; w7 c Q. j3 D, dMonday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.

I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!

Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.

Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I

I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.

He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.

Kyle was valedictorian of our class.

Graduation day, I saw Kyle.

Boy, sometimes I was jealous.

I could see that he was nervous about his speech.

So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"

As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began

Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...2 @6 o% O8 L7 T) V/ m

He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.

My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable.", p# x6 c. p# y" l
5 z; J# A0 v G$ k8 L5 aI heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.
