Our government recognizes that the Internet and digital technologies are8 l! T+ l$ F! L4 K7 f+ M: I
an increasingly important part of everyday life—including driving
' V! C$ z- B2 ~! J* C. ?innovation, commerce and social interaction. As the government develops, D5 X9 o! G0 ~
Canada’s first comprehensive Digital Economy Strategy, we need to look. {( y. | e$ k3 ?2 r# x
carefully at how issues like UBB affect the big picture. We will be
" Z) c( e8 C+ p& U0 S/ {! hguided by our long-standing policies of encouraging competition and0 K Y5 A& l8 j8 ?
investment, increasing consumer choice, minimizing regulation and allowing8 |- r2 X2 G! J# x- z1 [8 }8 C% G
market forces to prevail. * T: a# u& `8 S$ N5 a. d
5 T9 p+ [, s- o/ e: A' c
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has' A" s4 z7 E! U% m
chosen to examine these concerns that the government shares with a large9 p, G9 ?8 P- `% E6 _
number of Canadians. Details of the CRTC consultation are available at

) t8 U4 n2 Z+ d1 N) [5 d7 f3 g; d% W$ k: ~" H
When the CRTC reaches a final decision following its consultations, the& r; z9 Y+ S% c: q: _
government will carefully assess the CRTC position to ensure that it is in
( L; L6 J8 X) ~, S) sline with the best interests of Canadian consumers and encourages2 t' |# x2 u( J" i, x- a
competition among internet service providers. I will be recommending that
2 B* Q4 _2 m3 r v: [any decision counter to these foundational principles be reversed.
