g, x! l! @( F) t9 ]8 [6 ^/ VOur government recognizes that the Internet and digital technologies are0 K5 q6 P7 D" @) g: B0 I: w
an increasingly important part of everyday life—including driving
) M+ B" a e4 d7 W, p/ u6 qinnovation, commerce and social interaction. As the government develops& ^0 H3 m! h+ \9 W
Canada’s first comprehensive Digital Economy Strategy, we need to look
$ t2 K, @6 H! q8 P# d+ e/ Dcarefully at how issues like UBB affect the big picture. We will be
# v$ Y% g: }, i" Q3 Lguided by our long-standing policies of encouraging competition and4 m; e- ~; b: T7 i7 N
investment, increasing consumer choice, minimizing regulation and allowing
" A: ~0 x! l* m8 X# B$ s! xmarket forces to prevail.

4 s5 j3 f5 O# @2 vThe Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has- e: P6 J, K% r% V
chosen to examine these concerns that the government shares with a large
[2 P, h: n0 {: P1 n7 M1 {number of Canadians. Details of the CRTC consultation are available at1 G. e7 [$ {/ f

When the CRTC reaches a final decision following its consultations, the+ }) g' ]( H$ D& t+ W
government will carefully assess the CRTC position to ensure that it is in( i8 A: K" f7 [8 n
line with the best interests of Canadian consumers and encourages
0 @* V& h) D: C& _5 G/ @competition among internet service providers. I will be recommending that
/ G1 `1 n# t5 [: i8 W& Cany decision counter to these foundational principles be reversed.; ]& L) N; e& \) m' c
