on the issues that matter. Prime Minister Harper and I have been clear
0 I+ Y. @2 P) x. x. dthat we cannot support imposing a UBB business model on wholesale Internet" e# C2 |+ m( Z5 R
service providers.

Our government recognizes that the Internet and digital technologies are
$ K- I% ~3 A, r I% Y, `2 ^an increasingly important part of everyday life—including driving
; R) r% [4 H: m' oinnovation, commerce and social interaction. As the government develops
8 S' d7 E& z' f* ICanada’s first comprehensive Digital Economy Strategy, we need to look9 v9 M5 [# r# w% P' f
carefully at how issues like UBB affect the big picture. We will be$ i; \: ]& |, X, f8 a* t
guided by our long-standing policies of encouraging competition and
" _- }) X, y9 c5 zinvestment, increasing consumer choice, minimizing regulation and allowing
- K8 _ h8 Q7 L* U8 Wmarket forces to prevail.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has
$ H5 Q) _' \- ychosen to examine these concerns that the government shares with a large
5 B2 x" _0 Q- [9 o. I$ G7 mnumber of Canadians. Details of the CRTC consultation are available at

When the CRTC reaches a final decision following its consultations, the4 B1 Z) _0 }8 m0 k+ }
government will carefully assess the CRTC position to ensure that it is in
" O2 r/ x7 L3 ^& n: Rline with the best interests of Canadian consumers and encourages
- E7 t* U! m }: w5 z( ]" @: Ncompetition among internet service providers. I will be recommending that
