The Coordinator of the Multicultural Coalition
7 _* y/ `9 C ~ \9 @4 C8 \Roles and Functions
/ f$ |& Z, k# L) ]2 v& OThe Coordinator is responsible for the over-all management and operations of the
. f6 L8 a4 J- n1 a- K" z) norganization. The Coordinator defines the objectives, policies and goals for the. w5 q* ]3 |; |# V' I1 y
operations of the organization staff within the general board policies. He/she has
4 D0 V8 O6 C* ?( Pthe important responsibility of accurately reporting on financial progress,. n z( C+ b0 f2 G/ Y# e
operational concerns, organizational problems and accomplishments at regular6 ~" j! `( K4 V% f ] R9 L# w
board meetings. Short-range planning is the responsibility of the Coordinator and is
0 j+ f! b1 Q/ B" w: Q o% pconducted within the policy guidelines of the board. The Coordinator is an
: N* D! v4 a, ?0 c$ D9 Demployee of the board and therefore should not be part of the board which hires
% A* g" I' Y: q# P+ tstaff and sets their salaries. However, the Coordinator should be required to attend
# k% p# p5 i7 c; M8 |all board meetings and be an active, nonvoting participant.( d! |* Q$ L) i2 M% ?+ h

The specific functions of the coordinator include the following:
9 G' i9 T6 X r4 _1. Provides over-all coordination of Coalition activities in consultation with the( p+ d; L7 F6 X+ u5 H0 E
officers of the Coalition
, f( v$ O- K" t: X! X2. Builds and sustain relationships and partnerships with ethnocultural
& B0 C+ L! ^4 r2 d8 Q0 {organizations, immigrant and refugee communities, voluntary organizations
9 v. K/ p& O! l5 @9 ^+ D( a) {' land public institutions5 z: c" e' {5 f* Q2 x
3. Seeks opportunities to ensure sustainability of the organization through
3 y4 B/ v. L& Kfunding opportunities and maintaining initiatives4 X- f4 r5 Q9 ]
4. Liaise with funders, public and non-profit organizations and community
$ f& r& x- F/ r& b: Uorganizations as well as the media and build strategic relationships with" J) g5 y' }/ F+ d

5. Promotes transformative leadership among formal and informal community

participation of ethnocultural communities with the larger Canadian society

diverse backgrounds

Administrative responsibilities:1 o+ v% G7 _/ `/ T) V, V+ Z
1. Maintain an adequate bookkeeping and accounting system; provide for its% }1 w d; ?; H/ I
regular examination by competent outside auditors, selected by the board of1 t2 V/ L( P6 s& `# c# ^, e
directors, and at the regular annual meeting, present a statement to the
1 u8 u; v2 T; Q0 o- T$ O% kmembers of the Coalition’s financial condition.4 \ ?0 N- w* w
2. Recruits and hires staff for programs and other initiatives of the8 z2 \6 ?# \' ]+ G

Relationship of the Coordinator to the Board( D. A6 d) {& S/ y5 ^# n7 Z) ^* k
All operating decisions, employing and supervising personnel, choosing ways to
4 e/ G% u2 Y4 h$ p+ u' k# c timplement policies, planning the Coalition’s day-to-day activities, and coordinating
. W/ a1 I4 w d5 Joperations are a part of the Coordinator’s responsibility.0 F1 ]6 C d9 z0 {
The Coordinator shares some responsibilities jointly with the board, such as longrange planning. The Coordinator usually provides the initiative and then assists the board in decision-making. The purpose, future directions, broad basic policies, and% ], Z; j$ e: E, F
aims and objectives of the organizations are decided upon by this process. It should9 G4 H' L) t. e4 o" }* C/ u8 |
be noted that the board members make the policy decisions guided by membership) R( Z& q8 h M( w1 ?: h1 Y
participation and the Coordinator should confine his or her activities to helping and
/ I3 `9 `, B' c* N0 A3 pfacilitating this process with the Board. The Coordinator attends all board of# `( V6 z6 o$ k) @
directors' meetings and make available a business report and a monthly financial
& |1 I* f: h% S8 Fstatement as a minimum requirement. She/he brings to the board's attention all4 | f) B( y5 d7 D1 y6 F, D
matters requiring board consideration and action. She/he confers with the board of
