The Coordinator of the Multicultural Coalition* _/ m4 T1 I3 t; v+ l
Roles and Functions0 w; [& z' C1 [2 f8 W; ?/ i
The Coordinator is responsible for the over-all management and operations of the" ~3 a% ` j* Q9 E! u- n. `
organization. The Coordinator defines the objectives, policies and goals for the
9 x/ m) T4 J7 j* n, P( t8 |operations of the organization staff within the general board policies. He/she has& U8 ^% B. ^, \% E
the important responsibility of accurately reporting on financial progress,. _; W% s% S4 }
operational concerns, organizational problems and accomplishments at regular
" g% }% U4 l. L1 }board meetings. Short-range planning is the responsibility of the Coordinator and is
* F3 o/ D+ H; a+ ?6 X! N7 Jconducted within the policy guidelines of the board. The Coordinator is an
. X7 M/ C0 f# U- M- eemployee of the board and therefore should not be part of the board which hires* h' j1 {5 b; i* X0 K
staff and sets their salaries. However, the Coordinator should be required to attend/ B/ ?* M6 B2 ]7 q
all board meetings and be an active, nonvoting participant.- ]2 I: ~7 h: ?" w

Functions and responsibilities:

1. Provides over-all coordination of Coalition activities in consultation with the
w. e( B$ O( ?0 j( l0 xofficers of the Coalition
2 [& d" r3 z6 L; e7 ]/ Y2. Builds and sustain relationships and partnerships with ethnocultural
5 M' Y: q0 c5 q* n& Horganizations, immigrant and refugee communities, voluntary organizations
) O& B" i! E3 _ [+ Y& a% C' dand public institutions
* H5 \& ~. b! C# [3. Seeks opportunities to ensure sustainability of the organization through
6 ]# E/ {$ m; t m7 o" z& ^+ Pfunding opportunities and maintaining initiatives+ M& g/ ^+ L5 o% ^! P9 ]1 m
4. Liaise with funders, public and non-profit organizations and community
) X& o5 s! ~, [7 forganizations as well as the media and build strategic relationships with* H9 m5 J( A! F( u

5. Promotes transformative leadership among formal and informal community: d* ?, L# ^- s4 x. h9 m

6. Advances the community animation process as a bridging strategy for civic
! i `5 b/ N# v8 uparticipation of ethnocultural communities with the larger Canadian society

with groups and communities with culturally, ethnically and linguistically/ a3 Z) ]) F2 u! h* ^/ `! w

5 l* h# \$ @3 P* p) pAdministrative responsibilities:
* t4 W' c7 e- \# D% m$ e1. Maintain an adequate bookkeeping and accounting system; provide for its
) f1 P A8 @' Y# m8 I5 ^regular examination by competent outside auditors, selected by the board of# q7 a/ C' O( ]$ e+ u5 n( G
directors, and at the regular annual meeting, present a statement to the" N1 k6 M) ], f5 v3 n
members of the Coalition’s financial condition.
) j2 u- h, g! c) m5 x9 g2. Recruits and hires staff for programs and other initiatives of the
: {) ~! |, o9 \3 M* x- aMulticultural Coalition
8 z5 x& G7 V4 a# rRelationship of the Coordinator to the Board
: N6 E1 j* y+ S7 }) eAll operating decisions, employing and supervising personnel, choosing ways to
? p: {: j; c H1 I8 ?; pimplement policies, planning the Coalition’s day-to-day activities, and coordinating
& {4 V' I9 t$ \! boperations are a part of the Coordinator’s responsibility.
/ G" z+ U. V% ?) p- A8 K$ G0 `The Coordinator shares some responsibilities jointly with the board, such as longrange planning. The Coordinator usually provides the initiative and then assists the board in decision-making. The purpose, future directions, broad basic policies, and& G5 J# m" }. s) e8 [3 @( I+ g# b
aims and objectives of the organizations are decided upon by this process. It should% W. q) V1 R1 S+ _
be noted that the board members make the policy decisions guided by membership
; D: x: X2 T6 G. @2 l+ G. Gparticipation and the Coordinator should confine his or her activities to helping and N$ n+ r( |8 J V, X ^7 W- h
facilitating this process with the Board. The Coordinator attends all board of1 T& [5 x& ^, e+ Y
directors' meetings and make available a business report and a monthly financial4 k9 { N6 d; G5 L
statement as a minimum requirement. She/he brings to the board's attention all v! K1 p/ r7 u w3 j
matters requiring board consideration and action. She/he confers with the board of
" U( F) @) E6 Y" R, z' F$ Tdirectors on the development of new policies and appraises the effectiveness of
