The Coordinator of the Multicultural Coalition

1 V0 x4 w- x' ^0 E& @The Coordinator is responsible for the over-all management and operations of the; {* v) ?4 ~: Q$ m
organization. The Coordinator defines the objectives, policies and goals for the
5 @* @* H: L- W& m, T: Foperations of the organization staff within the general board policies. He/she has
6 ?* p4 y4 `! E+ }9 l6 `- N7 Qthe important responsibility of accurately reporting on financial progress,0 |/ Q" [& N' F# C* J
operational concerns, organizational problems and accomplishments at regular
3 d$ n1 A! ~, d0 \# vboard meetings. Short-range planning is the responsibility of the Coordinator and is
; z1 o& h+ E8 u* ~' w7 Cconducted within the policy guidelines of the board. The Coordinator is an% n4 o* ?- z; r1 R. u- q
employee of the board and therefore should not be part of the board which hires; A# X1 Y, e w- |
staff and sets their salaries. However, the Coordinator should be required to attend: q( `. \8 c; k o
all board meetings and be an active, nonvoting participant.

Functions and responsibilities:
; R- |: C6 U1 a \The specific functions of the coordinator include the following:
- O% W) N$ S6 F* c# J' K- o1. Provides over-all coordination of Coalition activities in consultation with the
$ h6 h* y# d9 `officers of the Coalition* F* d& V' P, n) q4 V' z
2. Builds and sustain relationships and partnerships with ethnocultural8 {1 e' H) G) D
organizations, immigrant and refugee communities, voluntary organizations, `$ C, \9 L; i5 p J0 b
and public institutions
4 F8 N( z# `# l; b7 g K- k3. Seeks opportunities to ensure sustainability of the organization through
$ Y! g) @4 [; O( f" g+ i: @funding opportunities and maintaining initiatives
6 [( Q1 D" x6 t3 O. j4. Liaise with funders, public and non-profit organizations and community4 `: m Z) S/ p3 p1 m
organizations as well as the media and build strategic relationships with( d; p; o8 t4 [! ^ l+ i& W" ?- d

7. Offer opportunities for service providers to learn and experience working2 `6 M; Y7 V5 O! j' Q& O
with groups and communities with culturally, ethnically and linguistically

) j0 l$ r0 n- eAdministrative responsibilities:
' `% h1 L- U& n3 {, J1 p1. Maintain an adequate bookkeeping and accounting system; provide for its5 m6 M+ P* }3 ^
regular examination by competent outside auditors, selected by the board of e) r+ S; {/ U4 [% l" l
directors, and at the regular annual meeting, present a statement to the
3 w" O+ R2 g/ D h7 ^ b4 @members of the Coalition’s financial condition.' h0 N1 v3 ?) Z" Y, X, t" S
2. Recruits and hires staff for programs and other initiatives of the
o' n5 \- `1 t) b# @1 z! bMulticultural Coalition* E7 l* H! o0 }' v& g$ d& l) K
Relationship of the Coordinator to the Board
# j: }7 n' Y( YAll operating decisions, employing and supervising personnel, choosing ways to
: X% ]6 p5 q5 w9 s+ Vimplement policies, planning the Coalition’s day-to-day activities, and coordinating
9 x- p" a; ~3 _# T* J- A/ Poperations are a part of the Coordinator’s responsibility.
" X6 t/ p: z% ? x! qThe Coordinator shares some responsibilities jointly with the board, such as longrange planning. The Coordinator usually provides the initiative and then assists the board in decision-making. The purpose, future directions, broad basic policies, and3 {, X% z. f* M7 p) a
aims and objectives of the organizations are decided upon by this process. It should% h/ x% n2 B$ L3 g
be noted that the board members make the policy decisions guided by membership
7 c* @$ S2 e4 a3 n' \1 Wparticipation and the Coordinator should confine his or her activities to helping and7 {- D- I+ D( h! s
facilitating this process with the Board. The Coordinator attends all board of n/ k- ~8 V% b! }3 _+ }
directors' meetings and make available a business report and a monthly financial! {$ M4 y1 i) d- }
statement as a minimum requirement. She/he brings to the board's attention all
: U9 z M9 G8 ]' ^. x6 lmatters requiring board consideration and action. She/he confers with the board of
( E$ ?! y2 g4 D B- u0 N9 _directors on the development of new policies and appraises the effectiveness of0 ^" {+ r8 c7 y3 R1 b
policies already adopted
