The Coordinator of the Multicultural Coalition# _# E y1 ^4 b
Roles and Functions
4 X3 K$ N% U2 o( r+ v' pThe Coordinator is responsible for the over-all management and operations of the% D) b/ e! b8 E7 @
organization. The Coordinator defines the objectives, policies and goals for the8 e$ s& M9 S6 E# j
operations of the organization staff within the general board policies. He/she has. l& n+ F+ }! B. `
the important responsibility of accurately reporting on financial progress,
5 r9 K+ Z& n8 [- s$ u0 i/ goperational concerns, organizational problems and accomplishments at regular5 g3 Y* @! `+ |& k2 r% l
board meetings. Short-range planning is the responsibility of the Coordinator and is6 ]- q2 s" a+ A6 h
conducted within the policy guidelines of the board. The Coordinator is an
$ M) p, c: K5 [$ zemployee of the board and therefore should not be part of the board which hires
c6 s5 R7 O2 I) N. B9 fstaff and sets their salaries. However, the Coordinator should be required to attend& ^8 S5 l8 u& W2 u$ n
all board meetings and be an active, nonvoting participant.

! A- ]7 p7 q' c7 l1 Z6 q1. Provides over-all coordination of Coalition activities in consultation with the0 H1 i- l q7 T7 e+ P1 `6 K
officers of the Coalition' |- U+ R# g$ B8 v7 @0 ]+ G& C' S$ }
2. Builds and sustain relationships and partnerships with ethnocultural
+ y. [9 O [- L3 Rorganizations, immigrant and refugee communities, voluntary organizations
" ^# B9 } d. o: @& ?: Wand public institutions5 d" d1 x# Z: h" P
3. Seeks opportunities to ensure sustainability of the organization through
8 b0 ^3 \" w' H+ \! Ffunding opportunities and maintaining initiatives- t& C2 C# ]# e0 L% }3 Z V6 v
4. Liaise with funders, public and non-profit organizations and community
, @5 p% s/ I4 Z( U% z3 _0 ?0 }9 D n' Lorganizations as well as the media and build strategic relationships with

participation of ethnocultural communities with the larger Canadian society

2 D3 w. F9 @8 k' D c1 ~Administrative responsibilities:! N. O1 Q0 T2 {
1. Maintain an adequate bookkeeping and accounting system; provide for its
% K4 @6 @. s3 k2 m( j) Z* Yregular examination by competent outside auditors, selected by the board of6 l$ T* R9 X) G* Y
directors, and at the regular annual meeting, present a statement to the
* R$ n- P: J9 e) I) {5 Y; _! G3 j% ^members of the Coalition’s financial condition.
& O8 M$ w( \9 M& G' C, e$ z2. Recruits and hires staff for programs and other initiatives of the1 l8 p5 ?% x+ y0 ~

Relationship of the Coordinator to the Board1 u1 T5 J0 k: W
All operating decisions, employing and supervising personnel, choosing ways to
. M1 X) H( j# a: Z) J& Eimplement policies, planning the Coalition’s day-to-day activities, and coordinating
8 M4 Y8 u" b: L0 ?: Ioperations are a part of the Coordinator’s responsibility.
6 N& v$ ~* c& @9 ^. d% o7 lThe Coordinator shares some responsibilities jointly with the board, such as longrange planning. The Coordinator usually provides the initiative and then assists the board in decision-making. The purpose, future directions, broad basic policies, and
% |' W* h9 u o8 l3 Caims and objectives of the organizations are decided upon by this process. It should
2 ~. O( Y8 v# S+ T; |' ^; Y. Y; Rbe noted that the board members make the policy decisions guided by membership' y. s3 T u" u1 ]: U
participation and the Coordinator should confine his or her activities to helping and7 Z W+ g8 _! F$ y
facilitating this process with the Board. The Coordinator attends all board of
3 ^$ M J: w/ O. Kdirectors' meetings and make available a business report and a monthly financial& _% P1 l# E9 q: o' d6 p
statement as a minimum requirement. She/he brings to the board's attention all
0 }/ L# n5 _2 y2 _' @matters requiring board consideration and action. She/he confers with the board of
* B' L3 V. ], t+ ]. H0 hdirectors on the development of new policies and appraises the effectiveness of
