Roles and Functions' v$ o0 u0 g* i9 e4 u- R6 T( H
The Coordinator is responsible for the over-all management and operations of the
8 r' v* I7 u5 _organization. The Coordinator defines the objectives, policies and goals for the
$ z& U' Z- e D0 xoperations of the organization staff within the general board policies. He/she has
& g0 e0 W, O' s$ Z4 ]3 U( H2 }the important responsibility of accurately reporting on financial progress,* m: }* g& G1 C3 {
operational concerns, organizational problems and accomplishments at regular' V& `6 D5 X, ~' D1 T9 Q- B
board meetings. Short-range planning is the responsibility of the Coordinator and is7 n+ X4 a0 g8 j1 S3 J4 w( A% H
conducted within the policy guidelines of the board. The Coordinator is an2 K% X* _3 L( y. s4 C
employee of the board and therefore should not be part of the board which hires
- T7 a$ M) G% m9 T' i3 Qstaff and sets their salaries. However, the Coordinator should be required to attend/ Q. N* h( |$ o) r
all board meetings and be an active, nonvoting participant./ N% n& v/ p0 w: ~

Functions and responsibilities:3 h4 h( R$ Z2 ?
The specific functions of the coordinator include the following:/ b5 C }- U$ P
1. Provides over-all coordination of Coalition activities in consultation with the1 V B P2 x6 v* S- _" z$ N
officers of the Coalition! S& j8 R& d) m& K5 H( K
2. Builds and sustain relationships and partnerships with ethnocultural
% `( G; F v5 L& D! R9 W' U$ F6 yorganizations, immigrant and refugee communities, voluntary organizations
5 k# L3 X: ?3 t9 U) R) _ |" h7 qand public institutions6 n" {: A: Z' h
3. Seeks opportunities to ensure sustainability of the organization through+ o8 c$ M; V# [8 j' ~
funding opportunities and maintaining initiatives; _& ]! T6 o+ }
4. Liaise with funders, public and non-profit organizations and community4 b" I) D2 v3 U7 P* v
organizations as well as the media and build strategic relationships with/ p: |& P# @+ t
these organizations

participation of ethnocultural communities with the larger Canadian society

Administrative responsibilities:
. [7 x/ d& ]8 G/ l5 _' f1. Maintain an adequate bookkeeping and accounting system; provide for its T5 c2 i" L, m" T" l% P; j# ]
regular examination by competent outside auditors, selected by the board of# B- [9 X! R/ r+ \
directors, and at the regular annual meeting, present a statement to the1 D% V( D" H9 j
members of the Coalition’s financial condition. t, W' p; a( u& q8 X. m; _) t& _
2. Recruits and hires staff for programs and other initiatives of the
: |% Y7 s& r4 O# A% ]Multicultural Coalition
2 p( f# h5 u( R1 ?8 R3 A$ E$ b* iRelationship of the Coordinator to the Board
m3 g7 m' B( r- RAll operating decisions, employing and supervising personnel, choosing ways to; ?2 b1 I: }( E9 L) c
implement policies, planning the Coalition’s day-to-day activities, and coordinating
# Y ~5 l4 A- {0 ~operations are a part of the Coordinator’s responsibility.
* u# |' K R7 v, R& a- M9 fThe Coordinator shares some responsibilities jointly with the board, such as longrange planning. The Coordinator usually provides the initiative and then assists the board in decision-making. The purpose, future directions, broad basic policies, and/ p, K5 q+ y0 m5 R
aims and objectives of the organizations are decided upon by this process. It should
, d1 _3 |2 ~5 U7 `1 w" F$ g3 j7 n* \be noted that the board members make the policy decisions guided by membership7 y9 x7 K; S* C1 @% ^
participation and the Coordinator should confine his or her activities to helping and3 t) A/ }* W: u$ W+ R; h+ g( j
facilitating this process with the Board. The Coordinator attends all board of
4 \0 L+ G5 D0 A- y6 H' @* Adirectors' meetings and make available a business report and a monthly financial% {( O" ?) y& R% z
statement as a minimum requirement. She/he brings to the board's attention all
1 K3 i) c; A7 T3 b) bmatters requiring board consideration and action. She/he confers with the board of# E+ F! u( j! Z$ L
directors on the development of new policies and appraises the effectiveness of

of funders, policy-makers, agencies and other decision makers
