The Coordinator of the Multicultural Coalition5 N+ T4 @+ @9 [5 s6 D3 t
Roles and Functions
: h a( z0 N% E, D [The Coordinator is responsible for the over-all management and operations of the
9 R" H1 R' C5 k2 R3 horganization. The Coordinator defines the objectives, policies and goals for the
# q1 C2 X# J Y( ^3 Goperations of the organization staff within the general board policies. He/she has
# b a/ w/ x! E, N8 }, Y% ~$ Q! F: ?the important responsibility of accurately reporting on financial progress,- S1 J- y% ?! T, `, D& E [
operational concerns, organizational problems and accomplishments at regular5 A4 A( I: [! b
board meetings. Short-range planning is the responsibility of the Coordinator and is
: w( ]4 n: ~: G7 y; K% _6 tconducted within the policy guidelines of the board. The Coordinator is an
: U" p1 d. s; s1 e9 }7 H- ]( qemployee of the board and therefore should not be part of the board which hires
4 {/ D2 E7 u0 D. N" h4 A9 l nstaff and sets their salaries. However, the Coordinator should be required to attend+ L; e: E4 |- @0 J6 l
all board meetings and be an active, nonvoting participant.! a$ I& K1 ~4 R0 \, X+ b

! C" m( q, f {3 i( o& S0 S2 ZThe specific functions of the coordinator include the following:
$ p" I, m6 a; Y+ W1. Provides over-all coordination of Coalition activities in consultation with the
7 p4 P) T1 F7 p2 w% a- fofficers of the Coalition3 J& i# G/ j" e- q( h- F
2. Builds and sustain relationships and partnerships with ethnocultural
& {; k- h7 G$ a; F! d4 _6 Jorganizations, immigrant and refugee communities, voluntary organizations
2 x" b; U; A* A6 K1 W; xand public institutions! `2 H, z% Z2 p8 r
3. Seeks opportunities to ensure sustainability of the organization through! N% _: }* p# F1 ?; |, F
funding opportunities and maintaining initiatives8 } L8 t J& ` K1 C9 E
4. Liaise with funders, public and non-profit organizations and community7 l+ U+ V+ a. N& k0 N
organizations as well as the media and build strategic relationships with

participation of ethnocultural communities with the larger Canadian society6 @1 d: E R U4 K c
7. Offer opportunities for service providers to learn and experience working/ u0 l$ R) V5 o2 ?+ Z) P, E% U
with groups and communities with culturally, ethnically and linguistically

Administrative responsibilities:
+ u" f$ O1 b2 s& n/ F$ V, J8 ]( X1. Maintain an adequate bookkeeping and accounting system; provide for its+ P- ^$ ~( y5 W9 i) R ^
regular examination by competent outside auditors, selected by the board of
' p8 `& I/ x, G; s* ^% @) K: C& ~directors, and at the regular annual meeting, present a statement to the Y+ R7 A2 E3 J: w5 S
members of the Coalition’s financial condition.6 H/ q. u3 Q [
2. Recruits and hires staff for programs and other initiatives of the! e1 |! L z. V" k0 h8 S& N2 v

Relationship of the Coordinator to the Board
, m1 B; i( |3 F) _! P RAll operating decisions, employing and supervising personnel, choosing ways to9 |7 Y1 `: B8 O6 y* P
implement policies, planning the Coalition’s day-to-day activities, and coordinating8 H. W5 @- p" C e) Y! |- p1 ~
operations are a part of the Coordinator’s responsibility.2 J/ `+ z! }, a1 y4 k7 \7 A# q
The Coordinator shares some responsibilities jointly with the board, such as longrange planning. The Coordinator usually provides the initiative and then assists the board in decision-making. The purpose, future directions, broad basic policies, and4 t6 h- K1 H5 Q3 s' g# C8 @
aims and objectives of the organizations are decided upon by this process. It should; ]3 q( N& i- _9 |& ]% ~
be noted that the board members make the policy decisions guided by membership
. {' S+ U! @: u0 s% Vparticipation and the Coordinator should confine his or her activities to helping and
7 v% r1 R# d% q/ _+ X( a$ ifacilitating this process with the Board. The Coordinator attends all board of
% ?% Q# H6 f7 W4 U0 v( I6 z7 gdirectors' meetings and make available a business report and a monthly financial8 {# B1 L$ j3 _: C
statement as a minimum requirement. She/he brings to the board's attention all* b# q# Z' c; x
matters requiring board consideration and action. She/he confers with the board of# j2 s& E4 e1 Y: \
directors on the development of new policies and appraises the effectiveness of
8 K" t* h: i3 |2 p) u: spolicies already adopted2 v3 c& ~7 u& ^' D- P( v4 {

4. Experience in administrative work with a proven ability to multi-task and
