Roles and Functions
* f* _# v+ Y( v! t5 T) rThe Coordinator is responsible for the over-all management and operations of the& Y# C$ q% u; R# i& F( F
organization. The Coordinator defines the objectives, policies and goals for the
- V4 w% j) ^8 [$ m2 ioperations of the organization staff within the general board policies. He/she has
; i, }7 n. k U( K& J7 }! Wthe important responsibility of accurately reporting on financial progress,6 ~& r, v- d6 l
operational concerns, organizational problems and accomplishments at regular+ a/ U) L( Q' e9 M+ ~, t
board meetings. Short-range planning is the responsibility of the Coordinator and is
9 V1 E& H! ~+ `; d/ Xconducted within the policy guidelines of the board. The Coordinator is an
3 S% \/ Y' c/ Pemployee of the board and therefore should not be part of the board which hires
4 N0 @0 S6 s7 @: v/ H* L2 mstaff and sets their salaries. However, the Coordinator should be required to attend& L' x* t3 T% D& M M8 B
all board meetings and be an active, nonvoting participant.

Functions and responsibilities:
% a* K+ u3 S2 q& gThe specific functions of the coordinator include the following:
, o! N! q- ^$ i" b& m# k" t1. Provides over-all coordination of Coalition activities in consultation with the

2. Builds and sustain relationships and partnerships with ethnocultural
% R1 \7 }$ u s; A4 L+ lorganizations, immigrant and refugee communities, voluntary organizations
' P8 F ?, u5 y2 n! X0 v4 Kand public institutions
" n! L* `! l+ ?* A4 \3 j$ b0 Z( v, w3. Seeks opportunities to ensure sustainability of the organization through; O8 d' A" M9 K! r0 b- P
funding opportunities and maintaining initiatives7 H9 U' y' \- T i/ J7 C/ Q
4. Liaise with funders, public and non-profit organizations and community, y. e# i* ?7 L) K$ i
organizations as well as the media and build strategic relationships with

Administrative responsibilities:
W3 B# A4 Z4 O- \1. Maintain an adequate bookkeeping and accounting system; provide for its
" t6 T! d& }0 Y$ s9 Nregular examination by competent outside auditors, selected by the board of
. i }: j4 e! Gdirectors, and at the regular annual meeting, present a statement to the
3 {9 p4 N4 ~' Q- t% ^" mmembers of the Coalition’s financial condition.
4 a4 k1 ?$ X7 v; r2 x! l2. Recruits and hires staff for programs and other initiatives of the
; ]# `( A8 J( t+ @& N5 ?* U: W; bMulticultural Coalition6 d; ?' ^5 L6 m3 S, ]2 R2 p
Relationship of the Coordinator to the Board
6 A6 E, k; f8 S6 @* z# VAll operating decisions, employing and supervising personnel, choosing ways to3 t" S b' D# w2 c0 l& C5 t
implement policies, planning the Coalition’s day-to-day activities, and coordinating
8 r2 y! V1 T* ]; ^operations are a part of the Coordinator’s responsibility.
: i. u1 l; D+ a2 e- X3 WThe Coordinator shares some responsibilities jointly with the board, such as longrange planning. The Coordinator usually provides the initiative and then assists the board in decision-making. The purpose, future directions, broad basic policies, and2 u' _4 [& x" D; s' L
aims and objectives of the organizations are decided upon by this process. It should! q ]+ k( Q* i' v2 s
be noted that the board members make the policy decisions guided by membership
" [+ V& [2 }% Dparticipation and the Coordinator should confine his or her activities to helping and8 }' X2 p& f8 v O$ U
facilitating this process with the Board. The Coordinator attends all board of
; A. _& K3 w4 Vdirectors' meetings and make available a business report and a monthly financial; l! g% d5 N3 [. n
statement as a minimum requirement. She/he brings to the board's attention all1 V/ T9 x6 ~( `8 Q7 t( x
matters requiring board consideration and action. She/he confers with the board of
* I2 g, E7 j+ s* O3 i5 K( i! ~directors on the development of new policies and appraises the effectiveness of$ E7 T0 V) B& K. U
