The Coordinator of the Multicultural Coalition

The Coordinator is responsible for the over-all management and operations of the- [% b+ u/ z! a. Z9 i
organization. The Coordinator defines the objectives, policies and goals for the# x( O0 i) o" G
operations of the organization staff within the general board policies. He/she has R) ^1 p" Y& Y3 J
the important responsibility of accurately reporting on financial progress,2 B# a+ u1 _$ f, g" }. a
operational concerns, organizational problems and accomplishments at regular
2 w7 l' b3 D1 u' m9 ~8 a: Lboard meetings. Short-range planning is the responsibility of the Coordinator and is- W5 M" T& S3 P6 u
conducted within the policy guidelines of the board. The Coordinator is an
7 M1 d- p8 F! _0 s( v' w, z; Jemployee of the board and therefore should not be part of the board which hires+ I8 i; ^7 r7 R4 M
staff and sets their salaries. However, the Coordinator should be required to attend& R% W: ?4 H5 T3 c/ W& y& }
all board meetings and be an active, nonvoting participant.

The specific functions of the coordinator include the following:
_" @" a$ A7 r/ D+ T) H1. Provides over-all coordination of Coalition activities in consultation with the! a" o9 c% d/ d, O# e, P1 {
officers of the Coalition
! ] x# @9 K' ?% z7 s. p! m2. Builds and sustain relationships and partnerships with ethnocultural) T# C+ v/ `8 \0 S# I7 c
organizations, immigrant and refugee communities, voluntary organizations: n {5 A7 v, X* y* P, C
and public institutions
3 @, ?1 Q$ p' c3. Seeks opportunities to ensure sustainability of the organization through+ A4 C, A8 f8 ?, ^, u( [
funding opportunities and maintaining initiatives
) \6 ~$ {- n1 H- J6 G7 `: p! r4. Liaise with funders, public and non-profit organizations and community
$ h Z/ R7 r* Y8 k7 e6 R: rorganizations as well as the media and build strategic relationships with+ E: v3 `2 ?! J; r* v# ]' _

5. Promotes transformative leadership among formal and informal community0 I" A8 U$ {$ f( [

6. Advances the community animation process as a bridging strategy for civic, y! }6 {9 N, _& }
participation of ethnocultural communities with the larger Canadian society
6 L+ t' ?( g% O7 O( g; ^/ l. V7. Offer opportunities for service providers to learn and experience working
+ i, b* O `. Q1 i$ J& hwith groups and communities with culturally, ethnically and linguistically
; o+ ?( C; o; }diverse backgrounds0 S l% L; l" b4 ~* N" W+ g& `; m. r3 L" N
3 H6 n- D ~+ f0 d6 _% j' i; jAdministrative responsibilities:
3 ?5 z& b$ K8 d; B5 Q& ~: r* j1. Maintain an adequate bookkeeping and accounting system; provide for its
. ?. U/ k( t+ r j( ]" ]1 L1 U* w0 Yregular examination by competent outside auditors, selected by the board of+ O5 j0 G3 D3 \5 v; S5 t
directors, and at the regular annual meeting, present a statement to the# a5 V4 J' t' a/ K* A, _
members of the Coalition’s financial condition.
t* i) D0 m. D5 C2 K# L2. Recruits and hires staff for programs and other initiatives of the

Relationship of the Coordinator to the Board Q6 t' g0 H1 v* t! o+ r1 s) Y
All operating decisions, employing and supervising personnel, choosing ways to8 f# {$ c4 [8 T9 U& L% ^" j9 O7 s
implement policies, planning the Coalition’s day-to-day activities, and coordinating; l+ U# N0 O9 w t2 `7 w" a
operations are a part of the Coordinator’s responsibility.
, [/ Q" [: g# `The Coordinator shares some responsibilities jointly with the board, such as longrange planning. The Coordinator usually provides the initiative and then assists the board in decision-making. The purpose, future directions, broad basic policies, and; v+ k* f, R9 v9 y
aims and objectives of the organizations are decided upon by this process. It should
# n! @; C# Q) K V* I. S- hbe noted that the board members make the policy decisions guided by membership
3 j6 H q) F6 L; Sparticipation and the Coordinator should confine his or her activities to helping and
/ o' c# d4 p; o: `" t x a9 j Efacilitating this process with the Board. The Coordinator attends all board of; p' Y) Y! ~9 ]8 b# m7 W: v
directors' meetings and make available a business report and a monthly financial2 J V# ~8 z! F
statement as a minimum requirement. She/he brings to the board's attention all4 `% v+ v4 e8 j" q
matters requiring board consideration and action. She/he confers with the board of" m+ b8 O2 i; s0 _& l
directors on the development of new policies and appraises the effectiveness of( ~5 H6 l7 J* e/ [) r4 S- ]- T
policies already adopted* @' i) l [8 y4 u/ k3 f; _
