The Coordinator of the Multicultural Coalition
5 A& L& R6 {$ V% ^! pRoles and Functions
' V" a6 ^5 c, B1 t( mThe Coordinator is responsible for the over-all management and operations of the6 s7 W; V/ s1 `+ J" ?% I- M: b
organization. The Coordinator defines the objectives, policies and goals for the9 v7 f. J0 x- t$ p9 k0 P
operations of the organization staff within the general board policies. He/she has @8 Z ]' k. k) x# h) D4 g
the important responsibility of accurately reporting on financial progress,
# z/ y3 ?9 h% i5 q2 Q+ y/ `operational concerns, organizational problems and accomplishments at regular( s5 a0 t# m8 K1 |8 v
board meetings. Short-range planning is the responsibility of the Coordinator and is; v i8 b& v8 x& H* K/ f
conducted within the policy guidelines of the board. The Coordinator is an
" s9 X" `. ?. \& nemployee of the board and therefore should not be part of the board which hires' H/ k' o* c: Q0 |; ?- r+ S$ L
staff and sets their salaries. However, the Coordinator should be required to attend1 H1 v' \4 N1 o- V; \
all board meetings and be an active, nonvoting participant.

The specific functions of the coordinator include the following:
. A5 l, e# \ G% k1. Provides over-all coordination of Coalition activities in consultation with the

2. Builds and sustain relationships and partnerships with ethnocultural8 j: a" v, X3 Q: _& x" ?9 m
organizations, immigrant and refugee communities, voluntary organizations/ v9 Y0 s& B! X; Y: g
and public institutions
, K8 s `4 L; y! q- L2 O, D; E3. Seeks opportunities to ensure sustainability of the organization through
; z* |# Y7 ~$ A2 lfunding opportunities and maintaining initiatives
5 N: w% R, Q' m- [1 V1 Q$ [" \4. Liaise with funders, public and non-profit organizations and community
n* P4 k: U/ Y" D; R$ }* I' Gorganizations as well as the media and build strategic relationships with

5. Promotes transformative leadership among formal and informal community

2 a( s% Z; j a2 ~6. Advances the community animation process as a bridging strategy for civic! U3 N% {, v6 _- x3 r
participation of ethnocultural communities with the larger Canadian society( U4 X6 d3 C( O& I9 ~/ I
7. Offer opportunities for service providers to learn and experience working8 O; w2 O8 `9 b: O4 p
with groups and communities with culturally, ethnically and linguistically

Administrative responsibilities:
: q, t) n1 I9 G) Q1. Maintain an adequate bookkeeping and accounting system; provide for its. D6 z1 `7 y: y% s( ?
regular examination by competent outside auditors, selected by the board of. }" {& F S/ Y; S r
directors, and at the regular annual meeting, present a statement to the
8 {8 g, |) j q$ O7 A9 Cmembers of the Coalition’s financial condition.& u' A7 {# c1 q2 c
2. Recruits and hires staff for programs and other initiatives of the
! m5 o, d, C8 z: X+ i6 B8 gMulticultural Coalition! E4 e7 G3 {) I# ^7 c
Relationship of the Coordinator to the Board
$ H1 o& p& N# OAll operating decisions, employing and supervising personnel, choosing ways to
9 z8 W# O4 ~5 |2 T4 E3 e( Iimplement policies, planning the Coalition’s day-to-day activities, and coordinating/ ?2 x/ V3 W h% h; B+ }9 ]% {
operations are a part of the Coordinator’s responsibility.
2 j# U0 C2 O( W5 e6 `# _The Coordinator shares some responsibilities jointly with the board, such as longrange planning. The Coordinator usually provides the initiative and then assists the board in decision-making. The purpose, future directions, broad basic policies, and
/ s6 S& b, c6 Y8 N1 Gaims and objectives of the organizations are decided upon by this process. It should& ?# H8 G5 K/ o2 r9 u- q. v- O
be noted that the board members make the policy decisions guided by membership
3 k6 F% `' s3 A9 R: E+ Cparticipation and the Coordinator should confine his or her activities to helping and" l1 O9 D+ T: ~( [. I- ^. H. M# ]
facilitating this process with the Board. The Coordinator attends all board of8 W, y t1 ?/ [+ N" L7 I+ V
directors' meetings and make available a business report and a monthly financial
* Z9 H" e; W5 M0 P4 `& Nstatement as a minimum requirement. She/he brings to the board's attention all
3 a1 f/ a, C9 x3 V D8 g0 c; Qmatters requiring board consideration and action. She/he confers with the board of: X8 P1 _9 R/ o
directors on the development of new policies and appraises the effectiveness of- \+ P. B/ |& d+ ^
policies already adopted
