The Coordinator of the Multicultural Coalition
4 D" O. T L: e2 WRoles and Functions
: }& `' J9 m: R; A, s+ ~$ QThe Coordinator is responsible for the over-all management and operations of the1 ]! h( l, U7 Y4 j% H8 o
organization. The Coordinator defines the objectives, policies and goals for the! K/ r, B* f+ y
operations of the organization staff within the general board policies. He/she has
; ]0 p ^. Q% e! tthe important responsibility of accurately reporting on financial progress,
8 Y3 p; q3 B) R, F9 z$ R$ aoperational concerns, organizational problems and accomplishments at regular& W. g0 {9 Z( U6 A+ O
board meetings. Short-range planning is the responsibility of the Coordinator and is
( o0 u# A" C( @; c: U, t5 t) fconducted within the policy guidelines of the board. The Coordinator is an0 _) Z& ?) t- C: o
employee of the board and therefore should not be part of the board which hires! W' Y1 r7 p9 Z6 Q' A" u. k8 w
staff and sets their salaries. However, the Coordinator should be required to attend
* C1 T0 L! v2 I, w& V8 M; uall board meetings and be an active, nonvoting participant.

The specific functions of the coordinator include the following:
& J) ~; j N6 h+ `1 H. u1. Provides over-all coordination of Coalition activities in consultation with the
8 L: ]% V! R3 ^: o9 xofficers of the Coalition
4 i3 s* N: b5 U0 o+ B$ X) a3 C2. Builds and sustain relationships and partnerships with ethnocultural
7 o, O; Q- y- N$ d J2 ?2 Jorganizations, immigrant and refugee communities, voluntary organizations
$ ^, p! `, G! d& @' l z% K% ~and public institutions9 [$ P9 a/ U4 X* x$ u @
3. Seeks opportunities to ensure sustainability of the organization through4 D# M/ L$ \2 J: U% j
funding opportunities and maintaining initiatives: l, l, n; k0 N" v% h C/ d! x0 C
4. Liaise with funders, public and non-profit organizations and community/ `3 U6 |* J/ p
organizations as well as the media and build strategic relationships with+ F5 T; x. A" U- Z

with groups and communities with culturally, ethnically and linguistically

1. Maintain an adequate bookkeeping and accounting system; provide for its
% K! q4 X" |; A8 L C8 _' y: dregular examination by competent outside auditors, selected by the board of" d" \- w4 ]; I* g, T/ G4 A/ ?
directors, and at the regular annual meeting, present a statement to the' U) \/ ~- U* l7 J7 C" G/ U
members of the Coalition’s financial condition.
# ^7 M h9 R/ n1 a. v2 |3 T2. Recruits and hires staff for programs and other initiatives of the* m2 c! W+ \* K2 D5 d

Relationship of the Coordinator to the Board2 o2 K0 V, T8 x. ?; [0 o' H3 C' N
All operating decisions, employing and supervising personnel, choosing ways to
3 D/ G% _( S# h7 g7 R+ yimplement policies, planning the Coalition’s day-to-day activities, and coordinating% }+ k, ^! D. K. V9 s0 g& e
operations are a part of the Coordinator’s responsibility. |! p9 R# \* R9 H U% H; z; @
The Coordinator shares some responsibilities jointly with the board, such as longrange planning. The Coordinator usually provides the initiative and then assists the board in decision-making. The purpose, future directions, broad basic policies, and
3 A4 W, H( @9 G2 Q, D) Taims and objectives of the organizations are decided upon by this process. It should
- T' i6 I, `) G( M2 a2 _+ N5 V+ m/ kbe noted that the board members make the policy decisions guided by membership1 f2 y4 q4 y8 \1 T& U& e$ g
participation and the Coordinator should confine his or her activities to helping and
, }3 K+ e6 ^ L9 O1 k4 kfacilitating this process with the Board. The Coordinator attends all board of5 V& X* f H% e2 l
directors' meetings and make available a business report and a monthly financial
* X: L4 f1 d+ q* Z8 Estatement as a minimum requirement. She/he brings to the board's attention all
. b1 E+ D9 R) j( h+ Fmatters requiring board consideration and action. She/he confers with the board of
! k8 m; [. Z ~! V8 `8 }directors on the development of new policies and appraises the effectiveness of$ i9 w/ F) I3 R& }$ K) i

1. Intercultural sensitivity, flexibility and an understanding or appreciation
