The Coordinator of the Multicultural Coalition, \( ` I1 ]+ A: v; t6 Q, O
Roles and Functions
5 Y( J2 b( q% `9 L* ^ \9 |The Coordinator is responsible for the over-all management and operations of the
, w' p/ s! i: `+ H- C8 Z! Sorganization. The Coordinator defines the objectives, policies and goals for the7 ^% K K" x9 T7 ~
operations of the organization staff within the general board policies. He/she has
, J! F% B7 |) I+ T4 ^# zthe important responsibility of accurately reporting on financial progress,' N" g: h8 e6 l. ~- F' T
operational concerns, organizational problems and accomplishments at regular4 Y" M. ^- N( V6 G) z
board meetings. Short-range planning is the responsibility of the Coordinator and is
3 x6 I1 z' y2 a$ p/ o# F! Kconducted within the policy guidelines of the board. The Coordinator is an& ~) Z& C& E# N
employee of the board and therefore should not be part of the board which hires
" ]- E: m9 g3 Y2 S; `3 Y# |6 Kstaff and sets their salaries. However, the Coordinator should be required to attend
& Z" I7 n3 ^7 \. E- Oall board meetings and be an active, nonvoting participant.0 V: ^$ ~5 A) N* M2 b- z# M

Functions and responsibilities:7 B% J5 G/ B/ t3 }* H2 Q, h
The specific functions of the coordinator include the following:* V4 Z+ J' s( n# S6 t. B
1. Provides over-all coordination of Coalition activities in consultation with the
5 n; C& B7 c) tofficers of the Coalition
1 Z6 w y! c" A" s( j9 ^2. Builds and sustain relationships and partnerships with ethnocultural, s2 s5 U6 q; y% w1 t
organizations, immigrant and refugee communities, voluntary organizations
4 y4 {; g3 n7 @( M; i* Mand public institutions/ l" ~7 e+ I0 x0 Q, u9 E
3. Seeks opportunities to ensure sustainability of the organization through
; j) r( T) g1 T; q6 [' l( \funding opportunities and maintaining initiatives+ q+ d J3 d7 k# k4 x
4. Liaise with funders, public and non-profit organizations and community. [5 E! |, a) \* U1 y: ^* w- Q# A
organizations as well as the media and build strategic relationships with

5. Promotes transformative leadership among formal and informal community6 `+ [' N- L. J6 P

participation of ethnocultural communities with the larger Canadian society

with groups and communities with culturally, ethnically and linguistically

1. Maintain an adequate bookkeeping and accounting system; provide for its
$ B' ?' a/ V5 W$ sregular examination by competent outside auditors, selected by the board of
" b; {. a) E' c. \' `6 _- B0 Kdirectors, and at the regular annual meeting, present a statement to the7 e( h9 E# ~9 n$ ?% i
members of the Coalition’s financial condition./ k3 l6 |; o* Q) |, b& U
2. Recruits and hires staff for programs and other initiatives of the
: Q" v0 r. E: c. oMulticultural Coalition
7 S+ a8 S$ o/ [) ~Relationship of the Coordinator to the Board
; E: |. x( O, Q9 h8 k9 jAll operating decisions, employing and supervising personnel, choosing ways to
: U! Q% r& E! r0 s9 wimplement policies, planning the Coalition’s day-to-day activities, and coordinating+ c* [& Z S6 i8 I
operations are a part of the Coordinator’s responsibility.
; D; {( z; Q* V9 @5 ~The Coordinator shares some responsibilities jointly with the board, such as longrange planning. The Coordinator usually provides the initiative and then assists the board in decision-making. The purpose, future directions, broad basic policies, and
1 _* T. X6 M% I ~" w6 m$ \9 saims and objectives of the organizations are decided upon by this process. It should
+ U! H6 N, m- e; f- B2 P7 Sbe noted that the board members make the policy decisions guided by membership
$ I2 O$ z/ e" s {% S+ [8 @0 Nparticipation and the Coordinator should confine his or her activities to helping and
$ P4 E3 s' \' B/ yfacilitating this process with the Board. The Coordinator attends all board of
4 D, y' e" F, k7 F6 ldirectors' meetings and make available a business report and a monthly financial
* q/ V4 ^0 Z% U& I1 s B/ ~statement as a minimum requirement. She/he brings to the board's attention all$ `4 o7 N1 _$ p2 ^; ~
matters requiring board consideration and action. She/he confers with the board of, r1 o+ E) X9 I& n2 C5 ~
directors on the development of new policies and appraises the effectiveness of
