The Coordinator of the Multicultural Coalition) R) t) g4 {3 k
Roles and Functions
, M: T6 ]5 ?% D+ g; a; q' OThe Coordinator is responsible for the over-all management and operations of the, X- r: u9 B+ g& l" J6 ^% N
organization. The Coordinator defines the objectives, policies and goals for the
+ @+ [' S1 p G$ V' p) zoperations of the organization staff within the general board policies. He/she has
, q. F: Q- Z0 r& H* u: z' q6 ?' ythe important responsibility of accurately reporting on financial progress,& B' g- w; l) A& P* d R
operational concerns, organizational problems and accomplishments at regular( u1 ~' j6 U* c& Y5 ~ E$ ]& q* _
board meetings. Short-range planning is the responsibility of the Coordinator and is
( q8 }9 p a# Z2 o+ y$ `3 K4 Tconducted within the policy guidelines of the board. The Coordinator is an
# H4 y* x( E3 B, G e* e1 vemployee of the board and therefore should not be part of the board which hires- y! s/ s0 r4 G3 F0 ~# ^3 @
staff and sets their salaries. However, the Coordinator should be required to attend$ ]+ l* Q- o0 J, [6 {* g3 [9 n& t
all board meetings and be an active, nonvoting participant.% V' ]! ?9 n! p0 x c- N; e
1 O+ b4 S, L/ a! L& mFunctions and responsibilities:

1. Provides over-all coordination of Coalition activities in consultation with the
. ~# Y: ?5 p0 s" o4 I. q7 ~officers of the Coalition# Q6 {# V' Y# l8 P6 p; T
2. Builds and sustain relationships and partnerships with ethnocultural( h; {& Q0 _7 y3 J: E6 q# M
organizations, immigrant and refugee communities, voluntary organizations- f, A" R0 H# |/ S4 R
and public institutions: T1 T9 }5 w4 |! f" l0 B$ V
3. Seeks opportunities to ensure sustainability of the organization through# i* p% ]. {/ `" {1 L( z! s5 {
funding opportunities and maintaining initiatives2 N/ r! ?6 n8 Z0 t& X
4. Liaise with funders, public and non-profit organizations and community' g; D# g+ {& |9 i. c
organizations as well as the media and build strategic relationships with; t3 V1 D) P2 z+ ]6 }7 y H

with groups and communities with culturally, ethnically and linguistically

+ |4 _1 |# C$ m, J2 g+ ^. hAdministrative responsibilities:
$ B( J& i; b& M6 C1. Maintain an adequate bookkeeping and accounting system; provide for its; _, x" o7 X" }" n" `) m- b
regular examination by competent outside auditors, selected by the board of8 x" I3 U) r$ w6 W+ A$ N
directors, and at the regular annual meeting, present a statement to the( ~+ r1 M: a @/ v
members of the Coalition’s financial condition.: _3 N3 \9 D0 ]" Q- A& [9 q. y H/ c
2. Recruits and hires staff for programs and other initiatives of the
) Z0 i. c; X* [, I, S: @7 _Multicultural Coalition
' `+ h, ^0 }6 s i# [2 JRelationship of the Coordinator to the Board/ Z3 W* I; X8 ~4 B
All operating decisions, employing and supervising personnel, choosing ways to
3 |# t0 L2 L* Q6 k4 ^implement policies, planning the Coalition’s day-to-day activities, and coordinating
' `+ k1 F/ z, {4 h* c% A" t& ^ S! }operations are a part of the Coordinator’s responsibility.9 U: [# r- } Q: R/ S. |
The Coordinator shares some responsibilities jointly with the board, such as longrange planning. The Coordinator usually provides the initiative and then assists the board in decision-making. The purpose, future directions, broad basic policies, and
, p9 O9 e( q; e4 H# `9 f* paims and objectives of the organizations are decided upon by this process. It should
) X, D! F. W3 F' f& ?be noted that the board members make the policy decisions guided by membership
" R' X$ B. r: k$ c j7 N" Yparticipation and the Coordinator should confine his or her activities to helping and! u$ c, W$ h1 @" n% n9 u" f
facilitating this process with the Board. The Coordinator attends all board of
5 z+ Q a+ z V4 k$ xdirectors' meetings and make available a business report and a monthly financial
4 s4 @( D" C. N7 [statement as a minimum requirement. She/he brings to the board's attention all9 z" f1 {3 \- v" M# b9 A
matters requiring board consideration and action. She/he confers with the board of, b; g$ ?- p' L
directors on the development of new policies and appraises the effectiveness of* `; \- h( p: M
policies already adopted

community level
