The Coordinator of the Multicultural Coalition
( B/ Y$ G3 z! V# T- i p; f/ rRoles and Functions
3 c) P- y0 F: d0 m: ]1 x. y. @The Coordinator is responsible for the over-all management and operations of the9 s* y( L; T* N9 H
organization. The Coordinator defines the objectives, policies and goals for the: q' C% r0 @4 y0 ~7 @7 r. A1 \
operations of the organization staff within the general board policies. He/she has8 i8 }4 z# ^2 W
the important responsibility of accurately reporting on financial progress,* a' N( M/ N% U9 Y! \. G
operational concerns, organizational problems and accomplishments at regular
$ z! x7 o d6 f9 O$ @: G! `board meetings. Short-range planning is the responsibility of the Coordinator and is
3 [% k9 ~& \, h |6 P: D: i- @conducted within the policy guidelines of the board. The Coordinator is an
* }; X2 O: q# D1 g: nemployee of the board and therefore should not be part of the board which hires
# |5 T: r& b$ e) lstaff and sets their salaries. However, the Coordinator should be required to attend
! J9 A D c- _9 C- J$ {all board meetings and be an active, nonvoting participant.

1 S# V" [3 [* k, rThe specific functions of the coordinator include the following:7 x# h% d) Q- z
1. Provides over-all coordination of Coalition activities in consultation with the
" ]# k& r) f6 M S% zofficers of the Coalition, z6 f* n6 Q9 ]( E6 X
2. Builds and sustain relationships and partnerships with ethnocultural
3 z: v: c& w* i$ Torganizations, immigrant and refugee communities, voluntary organizations! @( z1 ?$ r9 @# e
and public institutions0 Q6 e' ]+ T9 B4 d( q
3. Seeks opportunities to ensure sustainability of the organization through0 z: Q7 `6 c! R5 O8 y. ~
funding opportunities and maintaining initiatives
& s5 ^- n e$ t( k5 }; }& i5 e+ r4. Liaise with funders, public and non-profit organizations and community
1 q, W6 ]# }% j) aorganizations as well as the media and build strategic relationships with

5. Promotes transformative leadership among formal and informal community6 L3 R8 x0 a9 h

6. Advances the community animation process as a bridging strategy for civic" o$ ?, \' o b3 }( \7 n
participation of ethnocultural communities with the larger Canadian society

8 V0 C$ U2 x. T& y zwith groups and communities with culturally, ethnically and linguistically2 ~+ ^( l! }+ _
diverse backgrounds

Administrative responsibilities:
) R+ R! a) G3 U% s1. Maintain an adequate bookkeeping and accounting system; provide for its
( q5 [4 r" \* \+ w* mregular examination by competent outside auditors, selected by the board of
1 o# l/ @! y4 J& |" s! d* I7 {directors, and at the regular annual meeting, present a statement to the
9 ~8 h7 n4 |: e! D# ?4 U8 d/ }members of the Coalition’s financial condition.
% W4 o! z( o. r* N) d! U2. Recruits and hires staff for programs and other initiatives of the9 B3 E9 m$ P% |( @( ~) {7 [; D

Relationship of the Coordinator to the Board
" k3 M' M" s3 n1 A$ r- _All operating decisions, employing and supervising personnel, choosing ways to% d/ ]& m. o% U: p3 p* m: V
implement policies, planning the Coalition’s day-to-day activities, and coordinating& v3 @* Z2 U# ^2 g
operations are a part of the Coordinator’s responsibility.. u% s' e5 |- e! J! `1 [. ^
The Coordinator shares some responsibilities jointly with the board, such as longrange planning. The Coordinator usually provides the initiative and then assists the board in decision-making. The purpose, future directions, broad basic policies, and% ~ I/ Q0 C3 J6 o9 w/ X6 J/ E9 N1 z
aims and objectives of the organizations are decided upon by this process. It should
$ s8 Q8 t7 C+ j& r; l, M/ gbe noted that the board members make the policy decisions guided by membership! i! ] }6 b, ?! {
participation and the Coordinator should confine his or her activities to helping and x4 c. U) Y. V" b' c: @4 u
facilitating this process with the Board. The Coordinator attends all board of8 y( x; L# ^, L
directors' meetings and make available a business report and a monthly financial
4 P5 q3 J" V* i3 M vstatement as a minimum requirement. She/he brings to the board's attention all
+ ^# M8 m" R# n5 a1 p$ i+ @matters requiring board consideration and action. She/he confers with the board of. q' r- Q5 V7 H9 F+ G! e
directors on the development of new policies and appraises the effectiveness of) C! t9 D1 b: G/ X
policies already adopted! w" R7 l, I/ T5 e* X' A" G6 u& G! q" A
