The Coordinator of the Multicultural Coalition) \6 ~8 y5 ~: s! a- B0 O, w6 V- Q
Roles and Functions
0 I( r$ B- o) u I- }1 Y6 OThe Coordinator is responsible for the over-all management and operations of the$ ^& S0 d( s# H. ^* v
organization. The Coordinator defines the objectives, policies and goals for the6 B8 v* L: ^; n/ `9 R0 E
operations of the organization staff within the general board policies. He/she has
1 Q! @: N; d W% N+ ithe important responsibility of accurately reporting on financial progress,
, m9 R$ ?0 ?6 G. p' F/ r! Aoperational concerns, organizational problems and accomplishments at regular' i5 o# x' u* R- W U: k
board meetings. Short-range planning is the responsibility of the Coordinator and is" g8 L8 q3 i# t: B2 |" {
conducted within the policy guidelines of the board. The Coordinator is an$ r. e! A S3 y2 N2 K
employee of the board and therefore should not be part of the board which hires
) X! R, e+ L, p+ ~" N. z6 R" |staff and sets their salaries. However, the Coordinator should be required to attend
7 T% }" r4 P* l! tall board meetings and be an active, nonvoting participant. z* e: y+ P) B' f# s* \& W

Functions and responsibilities:
: v: t" v- \3 k- h n! v" u$ SThe specific functions of the coordinator include the following:2 `4 b. X. ^9 _/ }- B3 Y
1. Provides over-all coordination of Coalition activities in consultation with the. @# {1 ^; Z- v
officers of the Coalition9 V& ]7 I* y# w! J4 Z
2. Builds and sustain relationships and partnerships with ethnocultural9 ^' _& ]. D" u6 O6 C
organizations, immigrant and refugee communities, voluntary organizations
$ |1 B4 z- [5 ] K' w1 G0 q# Zand public institutions/ r9 R+ O2 V( B0 e& Q- j9 r/ e& K
3. Seeks opportunities to ensure sustainability of the organization through7 C9 n6 M+ c* n& }$ ]1 X
funding opportunities and maintaining initiatives+ j! u1 L- q) {& [" w2 a7 E
4. Liaise with funders, public and non-profit organizations and community v; S2 C6 H4 P# b
organizations as well as the media and build strategic relationships with
7 [& O9 u. Y7 f) R, Ithese organizations& c6 q/ Q: X% i- `8 @ q. |: B) r, d
5. Promotes transformative leadership among formal and informal community. \0 d5 q+ t, v% B/ H9 }% j7 u

6. Advances the community animation process as a bridging strategy for civic
( w& k( v! Z" J2 Jparticipation of ethnocultural communities with the larger Canadian society

with groups and communities with culturally, ethnically and linguistically

Administrative responsibilities:
! S# b- y, M, o' d* b$ L1. Maintain an adequate bookkeeping and accounting system; provide for its
( u2 a j7 f& k. \- Vregular examination by competent outside auditors, selected by the board of
' U6 ?: z, b! X7 Edirectors, and at the regular annual meeting, present a statement to the. \* J% \ J% V; j7 J4 E$ [3 H
members of the Coalition’s financial condition.
) n% ?+ S, i2 c. e4 e. J( m, T2. Recruits and hires staff for programs and other initiatives of the5 p# T# A& p6 V# z0 B

Relationship of the Coordinator to the Board
s6 V0 Y) z! [. x) K3 y1 wAll operating decisions, employing and supervising personnel, choosing ways to
1 W2 A6 h2 |# Y7 B7 ]' mimplement policies, planning the Coalition’s day-to-day activities, and coordinating
7 Q3 L7 j0 X( D9 a4 Hoperations are a part of the Coordinator’s responsibility.
* x9 g: F0 v9 h& i7 [The Coordinator shares some responsibilities jointly with the board, such as longrange planning. The Coordinator usually provides the initiative and then assists the board in decision-making. The purpose, future directions, broad basic policies, and
2 e) s. B# ?8 o6 c/ xaims and objectives of the organizations are decided upon by this process. It should
2 ~ B8 z' c5 R6 q. C8 hbe noted that the board members make the policy decisions guided by membership
) Z; R: }) v3 M1 f1 Y- g' d" W9 Fparticipation and the Coordinator should confine his or her activities to helping and
9 z" h3 A* {+ _. G, t% g, [$ `facilitating this process with the Board. The Coordinator attends all board of- j( N" W8 } H O1 A
directors' meetings and make available a business report and a monthly financial
* }; e- N- M' R. Q4 U0 Gstatement as a minimum requirement. She/he brings to the board's attention all& B" b6 y# ?- t, `, M9 `. a% F4 ~: G
matters requiring board consideration and action. She/he confers with the board of
' q0 y1 Z3 M4 \( } n8 T+ u1 Vdirectors on the development of new policies and appraises the effectiveness of
