The Coordinator of the Multicultural Coalition
) p+ `1 u; y# S2 r: }Roles and Functions
~9 ^& ]! G7 T/ lThe Coordinator is responsible for the over-all management and operations of the
; e5 ]3 u# r5 p0 @; H3 ?, w, b: `organization. The Coordinator defines the objectives, policies and goals for the% Y; X% C6 D4 z
operations of the organization staff within the general board policies. He/she has
- X5 W! k# m3 ^7 Sthe important responsibility of accurately reporting on financial progress,
" C" i2 d' ^( c' M8 I7 i j3 Coperational concerns, organizational problems and accomplishments at regular
' z0 o0 B1 J! B$ Hboard meetings. Short-range planning is the responsibility of the Coordinator and is& F5 h: J; S: p4 X6 M9 C F- j
conducted within the policy guidelines of the board. The Coordinator is an
+ V& `+ Y* g; u% N( aemployee of the board and therefore should not be part of the board which hires
7 n6 a* S8 W% G) T4 V5 W! i, Sstaff and sets their salaries. However, the Coordinator should be required to attend
* n) \) W5 X! w1 Uall board meetings and be an active, nonvoting participant.

% ]$ b5 Y6 X) J J- X- MThe specific functions of the coordinator include the following:
$ h4 H' N3 P4 R# U/ X8 N1. Provides over-all coordination of Coalition activities in consultation with the

2. Builds and sustain relationships and partnerships with ethnocultural
$ p: @. v9 a8 ]3 X, F+ i: vorganizations, immigrant and refugee communities, voluntary organizations
# @; p( ^% B" n/ |( {5 {. ^6 kand public institutions
9 x8 I3 V1 S9 I3. Seeks opportunities to ensure sustainability of the organization through
! C, i1 m/ R9 M2 j1 ffunding opportunities and maintaining initiatives
7 a; A k. v3 C6 U4. Liaise with funders, public and non-profit organizations and community1 S! d2 ]6 }6 F- p2 `
organizations as well as the media and build strategic relationships with) P" B& Q" t8 Y2 j. W, H

5. Promotes transformative leadership among formal and informal community

N6 X) O1 d4 U9 n9 h% w1. Maintain an adequate bookkeeping and accounting system; provide for its# A. b. r0 [* v* i' b
regular examination by competent outside auditors, selected by the board of
6 R+ [2 K& ^- Mdirectors, and at the regular annual meeting, present a statement to the$ m+ E0 h v# E2 w- @# B
members of the Coalition’s financial condition.) o% D7 R6 d- f6 S
2. Recruits and hires staff for programs and other initiatives of the9 S1 G5 f, \! v6 M, Z6 e; b w

All operating decisions, employing and supervising personnel, choosing ways to5 E A6 J( n1 {1 o
implement policies, planning the Coalition’s day-to-day activities, and coordinating
E- k4 O7 X8 i& Poperations are a part of the Coordinator’s responsibility.
7 g9 O6 B. z% V1 B) f* AThe Coordinator shares some responsibilities jointly with the board, such as longrange planning. The Coordinator usually provides the initiative and then assists the board in decision-making. The purpose, future directions, broad basic policies, and
) ^# d: k1 v) s3 i; f* k3 Waims and objectives of the organizations are decided upon by this process. It should' i: @' _/ u8 } O( B7 T! c
be noted that the board members make the policy decisions guided by membership0 o; U$ p9 I5 k0 _& k
participation and the Coordinator should confine his or her activities to helping and3 x9 p, l! H! u1 m! i
facilitating this process with the Board. The Coordinator attends all board of
3 g0 z1 X: [; Q' zdirectors' meetings and make available a business report and a monthly financial4 O% t- N" n' _/ k9 G
statement as a minimum requirement. She/he brings to the board's attention all: b: P9 ^" t$ {& p/ H- a$ G& W
matters requiring board consideration and action. She/he confers with the board of
/ b+ w% o: h+ D+ }6 zdirectors on the development of new policies and appraises the effectiveness of
