The Coordinator of the Multicultural Coalition
- n8 b8 x0 r7 p8 ?6 K5 T1 {. vRoles and Functions
. w9 k$ n: e- BThe Coordinator is responsible for the over-all management and operations of the# L$ x4 ]/ \" s# i' ]4 Q+ Z
organization. The Coordinator defines the objectives, policies and goals for the
3 X5 N6 X) o2 n: G+ i% I/ koperations of the organization staff within the general board policies. He/she has
1 ^8 f% z# g* v/ G9 nthe important responsibility of accurately reporting on financial progress,
) D1 }& \/ B+ x) @7 A, ooperational concerns, organizational problems and accomplishments at regular% O) ~" h$ N( i1 W, n
board meetings. Short-range planning is the responsibility of the Coordinator and is% @$ E; {" u' ?) v4 b3 S
conducted within the policy guidelines of the board. The Coordinator is an
- C$ ]" d6 z; ?7 E2 G6 H% G6 i% Semployee of the board and therefore should not be part of the board which hires6 U/ @6 M; x4 V& s8 s4 g
staff and sets their salaries. However, the Coordinator should be required to attend
/ V) V( E" D2 h0 M* call board meetings and be an active, nonvoting participant.3 [- u/ H8 j% s# d; ?

Functions and responsibilities:/ k, B$ |3 l4 ~( P- i
The specific functions of the coordinator include the following:5 H0 y5 w: W" J V9 W; T2 V7 q
1. Provides over-all coordination of Coalition activities in consultation with the
x# K4 r, K0 m* [9 b. _6 v+ ]officers of the Coalition+ ~1 ?2 h$ W/ J8 T7 P/ O
2. Builds and sustain relationships and partnerships with ethnocultural2 v7 m0 ~) {- r9 B6 P8 ]
organizations, immigrant and refugee communities, voluntary organizations9 S# [/ ^1 I* q& Q- s
and public institutions2 F; u! t) d% @. u
3. Seeks opportunities to ensure sustainability of the organization through
" `/ B# E8 e7 r( w6 Rfunding opportunities and maintaining initiatives
, z/ W* e4 \/ }; ]4. Liaise with funders, public and non-profit organizations and community$ R# D( g, V& `" A- g @: I# e9 F
organizations as well as the media and build strategic relationships with

6. Advances the community animation process as a bridging strategy for civic
6 R; y* i' [( g$ E3 A$ Kparticipation of ethnocultural communities with the larger Canadian society( `7 a& \/ g4 ?) c5 t3 {
7. Offer opportunities for service providers to learn and experience working P% q# [ V, g' I9 h4 U
with groups and communities with culturally, ethnically and linguistically! ?$ C t8 x5 p# }/ P5 s
diverse backgrounds

Administrative responsibilities:
J- J, `! Y D$ k6 Z2 i1. Maintain an adequate bookkeeping and accounting system; provide for its
9 }' P" _' `- c1 dregular examination by competent outside auditors, selected by the board of
. s' P1 Z. M# ?! ~5 b7 ?directors, and at the regular annual meeting, present a statement to the
t) ^' {+ m4 l( Hmembers of the Coalition’s financial condition." Q# U! |* Q, W6 K' o2 E
2. Recruits and hires staff for programs and other initiatives of the
: Y9 Z6 P- s& e. Q0 uMulticultural Coalition8 a5 q7 p$ ^6 f% _; ]
Relationship of the Coordinator to the Board
( A+ p+ H `* t9 s& R: W5 R% ~All operating decisions, employing and supervising personnel, choosing ways to
) t' X* f5 z0 P# B3 yimplement policies, planning the Coalition’s day-to-day activities, and coordinating
& a$ l2 H- e! X9 Doperations are a part of the Coordinator’s responsibility.
5 `0 j+ }+ t3 ]9 l; E6 XThe Coordinator shares some responsibilities jointly with the board, such as longrange planning. The Coordinator usually provides the initiative and then assists the board in decision-making. The purpose, future directions, broad basic policies, and$ R. ?2 s1 v( T+ G" d0 h( R
aims and objectives of the organizations are decided upon by this process. It should
2 V/ r( C! {' Q0 t7 @& |" b) o1 u& Xbe noted that the board members make the policy decisions guided by membership
+ ~& Z3 `: b, Mparticipation and the Coordinator should confine his or her activities to helping and2 ?, r, ?% V) `1 v* u& N
facilitating this process with the Board. The Coordinator attends all board of7 l1 H, w' L9 c0 U: i4 I/ ~. l
directors' meetings and make available a business report and a monthly financial4 ~5 T1 B* Z' t! k. q; H
statement as a minimum requirement. She/he brings to the board's attention all5 I5 R& Z" f$ x' p, o' u0 h0 U3 Z$ [
matters requiring board consideration and action. She/he confers with the board of
8 T, S0 ~0 _/ m7 Adirectors on the development of new policies and appraises the effectiveness of- @$ R3 N. |. {8 z L2 v F5 D

1. Intercultural sensitivity, flexibility and an understanding or appreciation2 H, G9 S. @( v' J" `$ K+ n
for the complex dynamics of emerging immigrant and refugee

2. Leadership and critical thinking skills to bridge the needs and struggles9 S, \" j0 N, Q! C' ~# q
of immigrant and refugee communities with the interests and mandates' Z {0 d9 V. I% l4 b
of funders, policy-makers, agencies and other decision makers
- X( b4 o" j( a" Y$ k3. Experience in writing grant proposals and accessing funding1 z- _# s/ a: ]/ g, J$ @5 x g

4. Experience in administrative work with a proven ability to multi-task and

5. Facilitation skills and ability to design, develop and deliver workshops an+ P( l% f" I4 @, a' x- \1 W

6. Public speaking skills. Media relations skills an asset

8. A diploma or degree in Social Work, the Social Sciences, Public Health, or& G7 O* Y, Z8 ^1 c; `) F; J
any related field is desired

10. Excellent computer skills using Microsoft Office (World, Excel and Power

Pay Range & Terms
; P3 a4 R% U' W9 RThis is a 9-month contract starting April 11, 2011 to December 31, 2011, with

Salary: Negotiable; commensurate with experience
