Roles and Functions( J0 }. I8 B+ u2 q5 q6 r
The Coordinator is responsible for the over-all management and operations of the: I9 {. @% _" F( E3 t" u. D
organization. The Coordinator defines the objectives, policies and goals for the5 T4 ]+ s, B* W8 I) x
operations of the organization staff within the general board policies. He/she has
/ O, @/ o' L% [* ^1 mthe important responsibility of accurately reporting on financial progress,
+ j& {/ |, S/ y& E6 `# ~operational concerns, organizational problems and accomplishments at regular3 L% c% V+ V* Z
board meetings. Short-range planning is the responsibility of the Coordinator and is
+ X L& t7 W$ _0 t: \0 lconducted within the policy guidelines of the board. The Coordinator is an
# K" A6 R p% N6 d. k4 U2 t( s: R: remployee of the board and therefore should not be part of the board which hires5 o# R( K: B0 @5 V5 m" A
staff and sets their salaries. However, the Coordinator should be required to attend
3 @3 X3 m% o1 D. S$ Q qall board meetings and be an active, nonvoting participant.

The specific functions of the coordinator include the following:
; L, d6 u. E! m- X1. Provides over-all coordination of Coalition activities in consultation with the2 G B, C( ~& j; o
officers of the Coalition
' Y( H3 I' n% q( J1 U2. Builds and sustain relationships and partnerships with ethnocultural
" s" M; k3 @/ M8 n/ i/ lorganizations, immigrant and refugee communities, voluntary organizations
) M0 M$ R4 Z* R" Qand public institutions
3 d2 r1 ?; W2 y |& H+ H3. Seeks opportunities to ensure sustainability of the organization through9 q5 _7 O. B% x0 T6 G
funding opportunities and maintaining initiatives
& E! R1 q& o7 c' L* r4. Liaise with funders, public and non-profit organizations and community# \! }* p" e$ N1 r% `
organizations as well as the media and build strategic relationships with

9 j' X( ?) n. M$ I5. Promotes transformative leadership among formal and informal community

6. Advances the community animation process as a bridging strategy for civic
. i0 O R/ ^" y6 E$ B+ Aparticipation of ethnocultural communities with the larger Canadian society

with groups and communities with culturally, ethnically and linguistically# q/ V' H5 d- Q+ L( y. @" o+ @

Administrative responsibilities:
- }. M+ D, m: W# N9 M1. Maintain an adequate bookkeeping and accounting system; provide for its3 v: Y' ~6 e0 I) G1 f/ l1 c
regular examination by competent outside auditors, selected by the board of) r/ o1 _; D' L9 z9 M& V' t
directors, and at the regular annual meeting, present a statement to the/ E& l T& T- g: \
members of the Coalition’s financial condition.% {" H. r8 b2 l {$ H
2. Recruits and hires staff for programs and other initiatives of the
/ {! k0 U; q1 a; G$ d, E; _' HMulticultural Coalition& u! Y: y2 D0 U3 Q; F" g
Relationship of the Coordinator to the Board
# o8 l# m- N) Y# B# U3 B" SAll operating decisions, employing and supervising personnel, choosing ways to
- z( o0 a, H7 o }1 @( iimplement policies, planning the Coalition’s day-to-day activities, and coordinating, N# j; _" t. O0 Z
operations are a part of the Coordinator’s responsibility.
) `! _+ g& ?1 mThe Coordinator shares some responsibilities jointly with the board, such as longrange planning. The Coordinator usually provides the initiative and then assists the board in decision-making. The purpose, future directions, broad basic policies, and; n* G$ ^3 q* \
aims and objectives of the organizations are decided upon by this process. It should# M" t+ E z' w4 W- E
be noted that the board members make the policy decisions guided by membership! B; u& f y, r( U* M
participation and the Coordinator should confine his or her activities to helping and
7 H3 ?8 K5 j( ^5 T% y! Jfacilitating this process with the Board. The Coordinator attends all board of9 q) D- }5 ]5 [/ T c; B# z) A2 b
directors' meetings and make available a business report and a monthly financial
" A7 ?1 x; t2 {" g! X% n" R4 C/ `statement as a minimum requirement. She/he brings to the board's attention all: X5 l! b) O/ [6 d. f
matters requiring board consideration and action. She/he confers with the board of$ b! y+ ^1 x2 N, ]3 S
directors on the development of new policies and appraises the effectiveness of
