The Coordinator of the Multicultural Coalition/ z B1 i# r* R! M( ^/ A
Roles and Functions
% A5 J. r3 _1 D* [4 SThe Coordinator is responsible for the over-all management and operations of the5 n8 Z( k2 w+ H( U7 N# M, |8 o- C
organization. The Coordinator defines the objectives, policies and goals for the3 D0 m. S: t* i% Z* X
operations of the organization staff within the general board policies. He/she has
9 a) n; ~6 t# j+ k" B9 Q, |. j1 Gthe important responsibility of accurately reporting on financial progress,- A* v9 I% M1 `* R( E
operational concerns, organizational problems and accomplishments at regular' c* Q$ A3 c. C, i* n. t
board meetings. Short-range planning is the responsibility of the Coordinator and is
, K1 \8 c8 s' S) e3 wconducted within the policy guidelines of the board. The Coordinator is an6 P; \6 E" k/ v+ B3 D' d9 U
employee of the board and therefore should not be part of the board which hires6 Y+ U1 @/ c/ }7 n1 W. @( F+ ?, b
staff and sets their salaries. However, the Coordinator should be required to attend

The specific functions of the coordinator include the following:
% h v% g& k8 g. J- R1. Provides over-all coordination of Coalition activities in consultation with the+ G; x# w5 q& p) w
officers of the Coalition p. n& ?8 c/ s0 J
2. Builds and sustain relationships and partnerships with ethnocultural
8 I, x* J% K: N( j9 \: ^4 i- gorganizations, immigrant and refugee communities, voluntary organizations
* f5 m0 K0 ?6 X: C( Y4 D- F7 dand public institutions
6 M! D$ f S& k. X( M# t; M& r3. Seeks opportunities to ensure sustainability of the organization through, L. Z/ ], g7 n( l: m- a
funding opportunities and maintaining initiatives ]: _* z% F- c
4. Liaise with funders, public and non-profit organizations and community
6 F. `+ H5 y c* c0 Vorganizations as well as the media and build strategic relationships with7 u4 M. k& J% {/ t( O* Z R0 d( \" @

5. Promotes transformative leadership among formal and informal community# K3 ?0 R! G5 f+ l8 d. I

# e5 W. Z& C! }; t( A# i- z8 \* r1. Maintain an adequate bookkeeping and accounting system; provide for its
z$ }' ^& O/ C& @1 Yregular examination by competent outside auditors, selected by the board of
/ ~8 R* _; Z. h: R7 bdirectors, and at the regular annual meeting, present a statement to the. B# c' V Y5 p' K. ?+ T
members of the Coalition’s financial condition.
' }7 C3 C5 O' W+ t- }2. Recruits and hires staff for programs and other initiatives of the" y; e, F# N, [7 V% L8 i8 f

All operating decisions, employing and supervising personnel, choosing ways to1 w" N" q6 J) R( {# d4 [2 B/ |
implement policies, planning the Coalition’s day-to-day activities, and coordinating: Q$ L3 w5 }( B0 Q7 j h
operations are a part of the Coordinator’s responsibility.
/ ?# _9 ?+ W- e0 @# oThe Coordinator shares some responsibilities jointly with the board, such as longrange planning. The Coordinator usually provides the initiative and then assists the board in decision-making. The purpose, future directions, broad basic policies, and
% \ \ n$ r8 d9 C1 J8 Gaims and objectives of the organizations are decided upon by this process. It should
; d. n! E3 C9 Q2 W obe noted that the board members make the policy decisions guided by membership+ h7 F+ K' v. |+ Q, I/ D
participation and the Coordinator should confine his or her activities to helping and e7 l, a, q- n6 f8 G7 T
facilitating this process with the Board. The Coordinator attends all board of
' T# }/ t! c$ Z7 ^directors' meetings and make available a business report and a monthly financial
9 {, e. g* b; t* r$ }# fstatement as a minimum requirement. She/he brings to the board's attention all
, M2 {9 [+ H$ K8 a/ @matters requiring board consideration and action. She/he confers with the board of
0 a9 T. O; q. _directors on the development of new policies and appraises the effectiveness of

for the complex dynamics of emerging immigrant and refugee

community level
