The Coordinator of the Multicultural Coalition, J! P! p/ z1 F% |
Roles and Functions
) u2 ~( ]4 b# EThe Coordinator is responsible for the over-all management and operations of the5 U- m9 ]) R; ?5 l$ _
organization. The Coordinator defines the objectives, policies and goals for the4 o* X! A) s" H+ E1 V
operations of the organization staff within the general board policies. He/she has0 n7 r& r- u' e( m
the important responsibility of accurately reporting on financial progress,9 g! F" a, ]+ U- F' l
operational concerns, organizational problems and accomplishments at regular
( z! w5 N* J, _1 M0 |board meetings. Short-range planning is the responsibility of the Coordinator and is
4 s: x6 j4 n6 z' z, Uconducted within the policy guidelines of the board. The Coordinator is an
a% I3 a: B+ e6 {1 V( K W- _4 Femployee of the board and therefore should not be part of the board which hires: F3 b( K; @# M1 X9 t
staff and sets their salaries. However, the Coordinator should be required to attend; b0 L% {8 s8 g3 ~
all board meetings and be an active, nonvoting participant.

The specific functions of the coordinator include the following:% J( f+ `- S2 R9 B0 i+ }
1. Provides over-all coordination of Coalition activities in consultation with the( _5 P' F+ o6 \0 h
officers of the Coalition
- Q& E r. K) U2. Builds and sustain relationships and partnerships with ethnocultural0 a7 A: G; K9 d+ D& l! M
organizations, immigrant and refugee communities, voluntary organizations8 J' h) p: {0 I# b G b3 y/ Y
and public institutions
& J7 K$ q4 E& \! C7 F, C3. Seeks opportunities to ensure sustainability of the organization through* P1 [% { G5 Y; i/ A; i
funding opportunities and maintaining initiatives( Q5 J# y& c* R I4 }4 b
4. Liaise with funders, public and non-profit organizations and community+ W, V! s( i( E; _3 L
organizations as well as the media and build strategic relationships with

4 i& ]: s5 p) K5. Promotes transformative leadership among formal and informal community

participation of ethnocultural communities with the larger Canadian society

Administrative responsibilities:8 r# u3 V: | o u$ S
1. Maintain an adequate bookkeeping and accounting system; provide for its
: Q* C: M* a. S! T% |. a/ J/ fregular examination by competent outside auditors, selected by the board of# \/ A. V7 P) M" t1 c9 Z" o
directors, and at the regular annual meeting, present a statement to the
5 ~1 h. Q; P- t$ t1 _members of the Coalition’s financial condition., p* r' a$ o! ~4 c- M1 t
2. Recruits and hires staff for programs and other initiatives of the
* \' m9 O1 [6 w# c% J9 ^. wMulticultural Coalition! N6 l9 K% K* M: H8 c1 u
Relationship of the Coordinator to the Board
: D4 T8 W3 w/ s5 l' |All operating decisions, employing and supervising personnel, choosing ways to
. p* @3 s5 P! `( f; ]! Jimplement policies, planning the Coalition’s day-to-day activities, and coordinating
" t9 ^3 S W4 M& v- Hoperations are a part of the Coordinator’s responsibility.
Y* G" d1 j: q4 @The Coordinator shares some responsibilities jointly with the board, such as longrange planning. The Coordinator usually provides the initiative and then assists the board in decision-making. The purpose, future directions, broad basic policies, and; d- r, X8 U7 s1 C7 c% @2 J
aims and objectives of the organizations are decided upon by this process. It should
/ E* ]8 g! }. N( [( sbe noted that the board members make the policy decisions guided by membership9 i6 y9 I7 Z# y4 Z2 l
participation and the Coordinator should confine his or her activities to helping and
- b6 o% j1 g( [: a8 \' A$ X) Jfacilitating this process with the Board. The Coordinator attends all board of7 S2 D% g' v, P1 D# T- i4 e0 y
directors' meetings and make available a business report and a monthly financial/ M( ]& t, m U K4 \
statement as a minimum requirement. She/he brings to the board's attention all% ?, H) z4 i8 F! ?
matters requiring board consideration and action. She/he confers with the board of, h, d5 B8 p" E( _8 D/ y- A" t. ^) V
directors on the development of new policies and appraises the effectiveness of" O$ s( X4 O j+ W. x' Z- _1 o
