The Coordinator of the Multicultural Coalition& {3 w) z8 y( `0 l! m
Roles and Functions
" Y- n! o p1 W% {8 K7 @2 QThe Coordinator is responsible for the over-all management and operations of the; y4 [" W5 ^7 V- `3 V3 [
organization. The Coordinator defines the objectives, policies and goals for the! u5 }6 ?+ s7 q9 O6 g0 l* c, V
operations of the organization staff within the general board policies. He/she has
. J; Y' P/ j% g1 ?0 B) `the important responsibility of accurately reporting on financial progress,% A: ^) {3 X7 ~& l7 i/ p+ Z+ N. ]
operational concerns, organizational problems and accomplishments at regular: S, D! j, ` {$ Z7 G5 [' v8 O
board meetings. Short-range planning is the responsibility of the Coordinator and is7 g3 ?3 k! t6 x; D' i% z
conducted within the policy guidelines of the board. The Coordinator is an
. }. ]9 J/ H, p% femployee of the board and therefore should not be part of the board which hires' R8 j. K' c; H5 P. P
staff and sets their salaries. However, the Coordinator should be required to attend
" j: Z' H5 f9 ^/ [+ _( J2 E5 E& Xall board meetings and be an active, nonvoting participant.

The specific functions of the coordinator include the following:
. Y/ C- p& l! y2 _8 N6 _1. Provides over-all coordination of Coalition activities in consultation with the x B0 W3 S, f7 L9 x) T
officers of the Coalition
3 \$ R1 @0 y! z) |! C7 r4 F) J. }2. Builds and sustain relationships and partnerships with ethnocultural
# Q0 n0 j% E" H# ^organizations, immigrant and refugee communities, voluntary organizations1 J* X7 K5 {+ Y. C
and public institutions5 m( k+ x T+ p: y
3. Seeks opportunities to ensure sustainability of the organization through
9 p" }( L! h8 r0 Ifunding opportunities and maintaining initiatives
6 R8 N5 r% l+ B* C* z P4. Liaise with funders, public and non-profit organizations and community
; C# v5 z6 c# M: m9 Uorganizations as well as the media and build strategic relationships with

& u( K* d' O, Y W5 ]4 v3 Z5. Promotes transformative leadership among formal and informal community

6. Advances the community animation process as a bridging strategy for civic) i- U# R p U/ ~! I
participation of ethnocultural communities with the larger Canadian society

, s; x I/ d2 hwith groups and communities with culturally, ethnically and linguistically

Administrative responsibilities:) K8 m6 ], }( `7 B- E
1. Maintain an adequate bookkeeping and accounting system; provide for its5 |6 ]2 {: A6 @, P8 x
regular examination by competent outside auditors, selected by the board of% K2 [" X, F; c0 w2 ]. L$ Q
directors, and at the regular annual meeting, present a statement to the
& I* r' C+ q: R- Y0 Ymembers of the Coalition’s financial condition.& R' K9 }% O3 L; M
2. Recruits and hires staff for programs and other initiatives of the/ O! Y+ c2 R# K9 L; K+ P. n

Relationship of the Coordinator to the Board
8 b; [9 x, ?# u6 KAll operating decisions, employing and supervising personnel, choosing ways to
1 M8 z+ I, d) R" q( [! _8 ]$ jimplement policies, planning the Coalition’s day-to-day activities, and coordinating
. r0 E6 Y h0 Soperations are a part of the Coordinator’s responsibility. m# M2 ~( f; [) k( ]/ A' _& k
The Coordinator shares some responsibilities jointly with the board, such as longrange planning. The Coordinator usually provides the initiative and then assists the board in decision-making. The purpose, future directions, broad basic policies, and
( U |$ A; W% ^aims and objectives of the organizations are decided upon by this process. It should
/ ^9 s/ J2 p6 S! h4 bbe noted that the board members make the policy decisions guided by membership
' ? F. s2 r. r0 I+ w: T6 P) Dparticipation and the Coordinator should confine his or her activities to helping and
1 C0 x6 W: G7 T- w! I9 Jfacilitating this process with the Board. The Coordinator attends all board of
0 d: V4 O7 d% b8 |& C4 Qdirectors' meetings and make available a business report and a monthly financial$ Y+ [& b8 W+ _$ W
statement as a minimum requirement. She/he brings to the board's attention all' W! L, Z* _$ n" m) b6 a3 m
matters requiring board consideration and action. She/he confers with the board of0 B( ~. w# J" b# [! r% V- {
directors on the development of new policies and appraises the effectiveness of* e7 P0 E; t# M3 ]/ g5 D
policies already adopted
