The Coordinator of the Multicultural Coalition6 i- v+ F o2 U& I4 k: d
Roles and Functions
+ D( t9 J3 s: E8 ^- rThe Coordinator is responsible for the over-all management and operations of the
2 n' M$ |. K% {: ~% torganization. The Coordinator defines the objectives, policies and goals for the; [6 X2 K4 ~+ j q& R3 B- d
operations of the organization staff within the general board policies. He/she has, x9 q" N' Z% z$ ^' w
the important responsibility of accurately reporting on financial progress,
" K6 g8 n' y$ c1 B. u* V3 d! K* [operational concerns, organizational problems and accomplishments at regular" I1 q9 R6 M b' O
board meetings. Short-range planning is the responsibility of the Coordinator and is
* N% ~* M+ D( w7 p a- P) Mconducted within the policy guidelines of the board. The Coordinator is an
( s# u( [9 N! l9 |* J9 O& Qemployee of the board and therefore should not be part of the board which hires+ q8 B4 y5 \: I, q6 x
staff and sets their salaries. However, the Coordinator should be required to attend! R! N* J/ ^9 K9 F
all board meetings and be an active, nonvoting participant.

The specific functions of the coordinator include the following:0 J# V; i( k. U4 |' `6 i" i2 |
1. Provides over-all coordination of Coalition activities in consultation with the! d! |2 ~ s* k+ u4 ]! B6 B6 g k6 B
officers of the Coalition
( J" o }2 j5 E. N2. Builds and sustain relationships and partnerships with ethnocultural% d# H7 n* |1 q+ {9 G' C
organizations, immigrant and refugee communities, voluntary organizations
- i, N4 B( i5 uand public institutions" r9 X: y2 F" ^! V1 ~1 b; T! i/ V
3. Seeks opportunities to ensure sustainability of the organization through
6 U5 @; p; S' L2 y% xfunding opportunities and maintaining initiatives
o6 ^4 D. U) i+ Y( J4. Liaise with funders, public and non-profit organizations and community* A& o) s5 @% P' e2 U: g
organizations as well as the media and build strategic relationships with* H# c2 p1 G# t n9 y6 N

with groups and communities with culturally, ethnically and linguistically

( y! V9 {9 b9 S6 m6 b# X0 L6 KAdministrative responsibilities:
6 d) E1 e( I5 g, M3 a: j g& P# L1. Maintain an adequate bookkeeping and accounting system; provide for its
4 r$ z. i' Y# A* H/ z$ j* Qregular examination by competent outside auditors, selected by the board of
' i9 A5 F! }" P; Z& ~ Edirectors, and at the regular annual meeting, present a statement to the
' B1 O: W/ K6 Kmembers of the Coalition’s financial condition.: a) {& w3 F# H
2. Recruits and hires staff for programs and other initiatives of the
2 o# C# U/ I3 Q3 yMulticultural Coalition
- U8 m; ]# G% ERelationship of the Coordinator to the Board5 M6 N2 k! |5 x; M) N+ T5 m( ^
All operating decisions, employing and supervising personnel, choosing ways to3 D$ a: V) P9 q8 k3 r' V
implement policies, planning the Coalition’s day-to-day activities, and coordinating) w- S0 _8 M" O" Y+ g2 M0 |$ J: I
operations are a part of the Coordinator’s responsibility.
: Z i1 D$ c+ ^' BThe Coordinator shares some responsibilities jointly with the board, such as longrange planning. The Coordinator usually provides the initiative and then assists the board in decision-making. The purpose, future directions, broad basic policies, and$ c' B( L. y' U
aims and objectives of the organizations are decided upon by this process. It should, O! h6 n9 d$ C7 y$ m/ W/ i _
be noted that the board members make the policy decisions guided by membership L: ^" F6 y. _& S/ {- e
participation and the Coordinator should confine his or her activities to helping and
" [5 E% G' j! Ifacilitating this process with the Board. The Coordinator attends all board of& H! r; H8 a; t8 O: }- v
directors' meetings and make available a business report and a monthly financial( W; @: C" X2 g. l" H) O
statement as a minimum requirement. She/he brings to the board's attention all7 T7 U& T) ]$ g
matters requiring board consideration and action. She/he confers with the board of
4 R( x a) m8 R9 Jdirectors on the development of new policies and appraises the effectiveness of

community level
