The Coordinator of the Multicultural Coalition
( m' t1 P- V3 `; K# s1 WRoles and Functions5 P% H) F! }; l& g
The Coordinator is responsible for the over-all management and operations of the
* p! s [8 X% \$ v4 Z+ W0 a& ]" j% Norganization. The Coordinator defines the objectives, policies and goals for the5 N3 H) N2 o. }+ n$ a/ n
operations of the organization staff within the general board policies. He/she has; l5 K2 X7 |+ d# G3 N! V
the important responsibility of accurately reporting on financial progress,
( E: b2 Q' y5 ~; K9 Roperational concerns, organizational problems and accomplishments at regular) k& X: K' a" g9 \3 I. O
board meetings. Short-range planning is the responsibility of the Coordinator and is1 n6 O) O8 F8 c/ U% O0 J
conducted within the policy guidelines of the board. The Coordinator is an
$ g9 n- M) ] C4 y# m" Bemployee of the board and therefore should not be part of the board which hires; I7 O5 V% T1 B, y
staff and sets their salaries. However, the Coordinator should be required to attend! q7 D0 y+ C8 ?# z& f @4 [! ^
all board meetings and be an active, nonvoting participant.

Functions and responsibilities:4 G0 E5 h" m5 U! Z4 q
The specific functions of the coordinator include the following:, w s9 y" A7 _
1. Provides over-all coordination of Coalition activities in consultation with the& t# ?: t, ~, w
officers of the Coalition
5 e4 n: D |/ Q2 v$ o0 X- t2. Builds and sustain relationships and partnerships with ethnocultural; i7 t- B9 z/ U( J
organizations, immigrant and refugee communities, voluntary organizations9 _8 r* R; l6 G# ]* u0 b
and public institutions, b2 j$ J* w5 {/ _5 h
3. Seeks opportunities to ensure sustainability of the organization through. D* B# u2 H2 R- T
funding opportunities and maintaining initiatives
1 v* U" ^5 K. Q; s4. Liaise with funders, public and non-profit organizations and community" n" G" H6 j. i# A$ z# t6 g2 N
organizations as well as the media and build strategic relationships with9 u7 n- S# {, \; g: Y: G$ m V

participation of ethnocultural communities with the larger Canadian society z+ ?3 {( \% T" c* V
7. Offer opportunities for service providers to learn and experience working
! X; j0 x6 b; W/ }" Cwith groups and communities with culturally, ethnically and linguistically3 @: }* a+ g! ^4 Z% S# ~2 D% p
diverse backgrounds( l4 D2 m1 X& M/ ^
7 x4 O5 v D7 |6 wAdministrative responsibilities:( U3 _2 E- p4 Y
1. Maintain an adequate bookkeeping and accounting system; provide for its, s5 B* p% i, B( |. @
regular examination by competent outside auditors, selected by the board of
' C6 Q8 H1 U& _3 k# u5 Ldirectors, and at the regular annual meeting, present a statement to the
) b+ y* P% [4 _9 X8 M; T+ }6 {members of the Coalition’s financial condition.
' p. n& y7 H. P* T# h9 g0 @- b2. Recruits and hires staff for programs and other initiatives of the1 e3 f6 L- Q( b' `

0 Q k& ` L; n8 P. w# lAll operating decisions, employing and supervising personnel, choosing ways to; S0 p' z' o" _: d4 }
implement policies, planning the Coalition’s day-to-day activities, and coordinating7 I* w4 k& }* c8 \- q# ]+ E
operations are a part of the Coordinator’s responsibility./ ]! O I( I4 M! j u
The Coordinator shares some responsibilities jointly with the board, such as longrange planning. The Coordinator usually provides the initiative and then assists the board in decision-making. The purpose, future directions, broad basic policies, and( \8 a2 u I4 N& A( r: C
aims and objectives of the organizations are decided upon by this process. It should% G7 z4 c% n! A
be noted that the board members make the policy decisions guided by membership
3 Z7 I* G' s1 V: q) U* Aparticipation and the Coordinator should confine his or her activities to helping and
: F' X& S& _5 H- X8 {$ E$ t$ tfacilitating this process with the Board. The Coordinator attends all board of4 m2 `- K) p3 @, n) b9 f; L
directors' meetings and make available a business report and a monthly financial
4 v; w/ O5 K) o( J& Q1 Wstatement as a minimum requirement. She/he brings to the board's attention all4 n( E$ D$ b3 W; ?
matters requiring board consideration and action. She/he confers with the board of; s0 ?; h0 ~3 L4 a1 B
directors on the development of new policies and appraises the effectiveness of
