Roles and Functions
( O( @ ~% M7 r3 i' k1 E$ gThe Coordinator is responsible for the over-all management and operations of the( _* v: A# ^& o, ]! M0 y
organization. The Coordinator defines the objectives, policies and goals for the* x. z# \3 u e; u0 h) u) i! {
operations of the organization staff within the general board policies. He/she has! i3 U+ \2 M% L: u
the important responsibility of accurately reporting on financial progress,
/ G6 A5 o. C5 l9 n: x/ \+ _; moperational concerns, organizational problems and accomplishments at regular
+ V+ P. K& H% R( x; _board meetings. Short-range planning is the responsibility of the Coordinator and is
9 t/ f. ?, V. Z5 ?7 Z, d2 iconducted within the policy guidelines of the board. The Coordinator is an
6 W. H; d+ {1 `* V% B& K/ |& O8 d% X* remployee of the board and therefore should not be part of the board which hires
1 Q) ~- i( x* T8 Y" _staff and sets their salaries. However, the Coordinator should be required to attend7 L) s0 J J+ z/ D9 ]& F/ Q8 Q
all board meetings and be an active, nonvoting participant.

Functions and responsibilities:
' U& y0 F% Y/ tThe specific functions of the coordinator include the following:' F+ N$ t) R- b0 ~0 d9 i# {, M# r
1. Provides over-all coordination of Coalition activities in consultation with the2 d, @- @9 l, }& f
officers of the Coalition8 V: o: u1 \, N- w# h2 ]5 }
2. Builds and sustain relationships and partnerships with ethnocultural
* O; E5 f. {+ W$ vorganizations, immigrant and refugee communities, voluntary organizations5 S4 r) _3 M) ^ r- O
and public institutions" F% {( Z0 e' Y- F( }- P
3. Seeks opportunities to ensure sustainability of the organization through& `" ^0 W4 g, ?( K
funding opportunities and maintaining initiatives: T" ]% H: L" K: q( i( H9 W8 _ z
4. Liaise with funders, public and non-profit organizations and community
. t- y3 S6 B4 |/ }5 f4 Rorganizations as well as the media and build strategic relationships with
+ S6 @2 j% o5 }% S9 u$ vthese organizations
0 Q. a5 a, {+ x2 w5. Promotes transformative leadership among formal and informal community

6. Advances the community animation process as a bridging strategy for civic3 J; h" M' P1 i+ d9 _3 g
participation of ethnocultural communities with the larger Canadian society% J l; Y$ y7 d* I4 _9 X
7. Offer opportunities for service providers to learn and experience working; f: J5 `- H- f; ~+ ?6 |
with groups and communities with culturally, ethnically and linguistically

Administrative responsibilities:# p4 ^$ j4 E, g# T
1. Maintain an adequate bookkeeping and accounting system; provide for its# Z R; g P1 v$ t
regular examination by competent outside auditors, selected by the board of8 U! h6 d, }5 ^# m. d" M
directors, and at the regular annual meeting, present a statement to the
( ~- Q0 }9 c+ i4 C6 }( V+ v, D$ pmembers of the Coalition’s financial condition.+ }5 M' A. \1 @: }2 V
2. Recruits and hires staff for programs and other initiatives of the9 b3 b) `8 l# C7 r1 K- [8 B: B
Multicultural Coalition
1 {( }( b* a& k, D1 w4 Q* @Relationship of the Coordinator to the Board
1 K& U; ?+ u! J, r. qAll operating decisions, employing and supervising personnel, choosing ways to
; \$ j2 c$ X( X1 X: g: Z; Vimplement policies, planning the Coalition’s day-to-day activities, and coordinating: T) g+ R% p2 K) @
operations are a part of the Coordinator’s responsibility.
' s' l; C; `* L- b# g% A, }1 z/ H6 }The Coordinator shares some responsibilities jointly with the board, such as longrange planning. The Coordinator usually provides the initiative and then assists the board in decision-making. The purpose, future directions, broad basic policies, and
. ~) G' h' w3 p5 }$ G! \- naims and objectives of the organizations are decided upon by this process. It should. y% v9 W- g% |+ E Z
be noted that the board members make the policy decisions guided by membership
7 `% h9 F6 y, j; b. L Uparticipation and the Coordinator should confine his or her activities to helping and
* |: l# K) x4 E4 U5 tfacilitating this process with the Board. The Coordinator attends all board of9 D% ~4 Q' h& r" D" N+ Z# w
directors' meetings and make available a business report and a monthly financial
' l& ~+ p/ K( a D6 a, Dstatement as a minimum requirement. She/he brings to the board's attention all/ S& Y1 s! p# v5 s# X' L
matters requiring board consideration and action. She/he confers with the board of
- V' D g% B8 q% f" z: b! f- ydirectors on the development of new policies and appraises the effectiveness of% W) b5 |3 n$ ]6 R
policies already adopted

2. Leadership and critical thinking skills to bridge the needs and struggles

3. Experience in writing grant proposals and accessing funding

8. A diploma or degree in Social Work, the Social Sciences, Public Health, or

community level

possible extension depending on funding.
