Roles and Functions
/ I* t" ]9 z# n O! E: }4 RThe Coordinator is responsible for the over-all management and operations of the. E& }) p6 o8 V0 [+ Y: O, U+ g
organization. The Coordinator defines the objectives, policies and goals for the
% P( B! G+ d. Noperations of the organization staff within the general board policies. He/she has+ D' J! T% n z9 [( X: u
the important responsibility of accurately reporting on financial progress,3 C: q) E4 D- d
operational concerns, organizational problems and accomplishments at regular
6 y2 a7 ]3 ?2 n; S! H+ d; [board meetings. Short-range planning is the responsibility of the Coordinator and is3 r, I6 a, d6 Z
conducted within the policy guidelines of the board. The Coordinator is an
5 g. a( ~ }1 c, Z7 {employee of the board and therefore should not be part of the board which hires
! ~# N! {- n+ k% F" _8 ^8 Sstaff and sets their salaries. However, the Coordinator should be required to attend
0 }1 @" }8 V [0 F3 _2 A7 ], ^all board meetings and be an active, nonvoting participant.

The specific functions of the coordinator include the following:
7 U2 S8 K. B! C1. Provides over-all coordination of Coalition activities in consultation with the
- n5 K% B5 G8 ^$ U+ G; D6 dofficers of the Coalition
) k- Y; I% n. E" o+ m2. Builds and sustain relationships and partnerships with ethnocultural
) O7 y" d# I0 t- J) eorganizations, immigrant and refugee communities, voluntary organizations
7 I( q3 ?* v/ s/ a/ ~and public institutions$ ^9 R$ x g9 w: \
3. Seeks opportunities to ensure sustainability of the organization through
" C+ @1 J8 m5 W3 N( |6 [funding opportunities and maintaining initiatives6 A, [$ T- r) ~3 W! A
4. Liaise with funders, public and non-profit organizations and community
$ C* ?0 W8 m, ^1 Q0 n- E* q/ m4 M; forganizations as well as the media and build strategic relationships with A. t7 \5 J9 A

5. Promotes transformative leadership among formal and informal community

6. Advances the community animation process as a bridging strategy for civic& ]9 L5 g0 N0 u! @5 p5 l. @8 d
participation of ethnocultural communities with the larger Canadian society; F/ W8 z0 M2 d& ~; E! l
7. Offer opportunities for service providers to learn and experience working9 w6 _5 n3 l) X6 e% h2 r0 h8 I# ?& R
with groups and communities with culturally, ethnically and linguistically
; S* J) j" {" ~3 j- f; Xdiverse backgrounds: f, Y0 r+ j( P1 [5 E) {7 K
8 N8 U. \5 g( dAdministrative responsibilities:, l- O% ^7 E* b1 v
1. Maintain an adequate bookkeeping and accounting system; provide for its1 Q- ^$ ^- u% ^4 \" K) x g
regular examination by competent outside auditors, selected by the board of2 w1 x' z0 y% c& V/ n' R$ G
directors, and at the regular annual meeting, present a statement to the3 z/ D9 d8 W8 k+ `
members of the Coalition’s financial condition.
; P" y/ K6 C5 W r9 L. q2. Recruits and hires staff for programs and other initiatives of the
% T t7 z% E- M( c8 ]' N- bMulticultural Coalition- l* ?) _/ Z8 \8 {* I- q4 K
Relationship of the Coordinator to the Board
2 i" s' h" B) `7 L& q9 r% ZAll operating decisions, employing and supervising personnel, choosing ways to& v! Q. v1 o5 B* {
implement policies, planning the Coalition’s day-to-day activities, and coordinating
, \% A; c1 J: W# P9 \+ foperations are a part of the Coordinator’s responsibility.
x+ B4 [, j9 X6 d; AThe Coordinator shares some responsibilities jointly with the board, such as longrange planning. The Coordinator usually provides the initiative and then assists the board in decision-making. The purpose, future directions, broad basic policies, and: f* |2 o6 T1 Y+ t3 |0 q8 ?) q
aims and objectives of the organizations are decided upon by this process. It should( s6 l. G3 D. S# }2 {7 c5 h8 {! B
be noted that the board members make the policy decisions guided by membership
b8 w% H" _) [7 o$ Xparticipation and the Coordinator should confine his or her activities to helping and5 h- D# L/ J# v0 l1 W9 i
facilitating this process with the Board. The Coordinator attends all board of5 r) ?* I2 x0 q' h
directors' meetings and make available a business report and a monthly financial
" S1 j# [7 Q) x( N' J" Wstatement as a minimum requirement. She/he brings to the board's attention all1 t5 q; ], ~: L @" p9 G
matters requiring board consideration and action. She/he confers with the board of4 c. x* G* } {! g) W+ t% ?* V
directors on the development of new policies and appraises the effectiveness of
! T+ P: k; ]9 L+ W4 W. xpolicies already adopted
