The Coordinator of the Multicultural Coalition0 x9 m: N3 B6 G+ p( u
Roles and Functions
$ _; I9 m7 z; B9 nThe Coordinator is responsible for the over-all management and operations of the
% T6 p: ~0 t7 t5 T; U! j- c: Torganization. The Coordinator defines the objectives, policies and goals for the
1 @6 t! Z+ g7 V foperations of the organization staff within the general board policies. He/she has
( s% O+ f5 ]7 I. V) Rthe important responsibility of accurately reporting on financial progress,$ i7 O, T/ h: ^/ X8 m/ }
operational concerns, organizational problems and accomplishments at regular3 a; J# u' \ I7 k1 {
board meetings. Short-range planning is the responsibility of the Coordinator and is
@8 o* Q- C0 U1 d0 Q9 Fconducted within the policy guidelines of the board. The Coordinator is an9 D5 }7 U$ J: ?9 @% @
employee of the board and therefore should not be part of the board which hires
9 }* z( e+ }7 Tstaff and sets their salaries. However, the Coordinator should be required to attend) y2 l0 f: d8 G$ x0 o& m# m% \ a9 ~8 Y5 `; r
all board meetings and be an active, nonvoting participant.

The specific functions of the coordinator include the following:. ]8 I1 \/ O0 L, \4 D6 T
1. Provides over-all coordination of Coalition activities in consultation with the9 {9 G% C* p: T- O4 h7 A; f; _7 f
officers of the Coalition
8 e8 L; N8 ]. T' r# E# w2. Builds and sustain relationships and partnerships with ethnocultural! \* ?, Y8 a7 z) h: J- h& D
organizations, immigrant and refugee communities, voluntary organizations; f) R2 u5 a/ }
and public institutions
# g* H; h6 v& @3 d3 G& @3. Seeks opportunities to ensure sustainability of the organization through3 G' a( e. ]' l; I
funding opportunities and maintaining initiatives
( m; V0 O' e' X6 \0 ~ V0 }4. Liaise with funders, public and non-profit organizations and community; H3 S- G' T! H8 u
organizations as well as the media and build strategic relationships with

7. Offer opportunities for service providers to learn and experience working8 @9 \9 t/ S7 [7 ~
with groups and communities with culturally, ethnically and linguistically

" J# I7 K% ?- Z/ N1 O) rAdministrative responsibilities:( R3 v$ O7 b, H' d4 H$ o9 X
1. Maintain an adequate bookkeeping and accounting system; provide for its+ P; ?- q3 v9 x) s U
regular examination by competent outside auditors, selected by the board of/ e$ f" Z, L) M9 R, f# `: K
directors, and at the regular annual meeting, present a statement to the
" r0 l# y* `5 |, |" ~7 fmembers of the Coalition’s financial condition.
) a/ \# P' N! ?0 f# F2. Recruits and hires staff for programs and other initiatives of the

, }' `' s [9 |) sRelationship of the Coordinator to the Board) Z1 e6 `3 S8 K( R9 y$ r
All operating decisions, employing and supervising personnel, choosing ways to
) B2 H, r7 N/ }7 ^; w6 @implement policies, planning the Coalition’s day-to-day activities, and coordinating
* Y. q2 \! U; Z; h$ `+ y' z4 _operations are a part of the Coordinator’s responsibility.
! ?$ L, Z6 N9 h; o1 D& bThe Coordinator shares some responsibilities jointly with the board, such as longrange planning. The Coordinator usually provides the initiative and then assists the board in decision-making. The purpose, future directions, broad basic policies, and% t, j; O, k3 B6 S ? B
aims and objectives of the organizations are decided upon by this process. It should
+ s9 S+ M8 k" s5 {1 Q+ `# e- O/ Mbe noted that the board members make the policy decisions guided by membership. k( d" n$ F$ C6 C5 L. x
participation and the Coordinator should confine his or her activities to helping and# `9 P2 Z% m, n& j
facilitating this process with the Board. The Coordinator attends all board of& P+ q: A( y) |) o
directors' meetings and make available a business report and a monthly financial
& Y% W: m$ _ j% S: R& ystatement as a minimum requirement. She/he brings to the board's attention all
4 z3 Q+ j5 K6 K v' I3 c: imatters requiring board consideration and action. She/he confers with the board of
~6 e! G; g, l& Edirectors on the development of new policies and appraises the effectiveness of3 n* @2 T! g) {. e1 I7 ^

1. Intercultural sensitivity, flexibility and an understanding or appreciation; B& r4 i/ T/ n

2. Leadership and critical thinking skills to bridge the needs and struggles* V. e6 u9 `' n/ Y* t9 [2 S. F
of immigrant and refugee communities with the interests and mandates
