The Coordinator of the Multicultural Coalition
8 F7 x; Q. V. |3 |# YRoles and Functions
0 b# p/ z5 T" g2 p$ T( O0 z. dThe Coordinator is responsible for the over-all management and operations of the3 v+ t2 Q4 ~! `3 j1 C
organization. The Coordinator defines the objectives, policies and goals for the2 e' g1 L( x; Y0 p. U- H
operations of the organization staff within the general board policies. He/she has
2 _0 M/ ~, F4 Sthe important responsibility of accurately reporting on financial progress,4 r$ x" j' `9 i
operational concerns, organizational problems and accomplishments at regular1 D3 {" B' b: ?4 }. I4 A
board meetings. Short-range planning is the responsibility of the Coordinator and is
# U9 A4 j4 A! Y- I& h' o: Cconducted within the policy guidelines of the board. The Coordinator is an+ H! a! a/ [3 a! ?' @) y L
employee of the board and therefore should not be part of the board which hires
; f0 D0 b+ g9 o5 I/ mstaff and sets their salaries. However, the Coordinator should be required to attend
4 a% E- a+ A6 C2 f aall board meetings and be an active, nonvoting participant.2 u) A6 r' t9 u) V/ Q* U

Functions and responsibilities:6 W/ b3 G7 n L$ s
The specific functions of the coordinator include the following:
+ u& n. O4 b3 T- @1. Provides over-all coordination of Coalition activities in consultation with the Y) r( v8 _+ _' ~' z
officers of the Coalition
% z# Y: S) q9 i; ]$ q& n2. Builds and sustain relationships and partnerships with ethnocultural) E) ^. A8 j! V4 e/ ?
organizations, immigrant and refugee communities, voluntary organizations
& `6 b7 k" @2 P4 jand public institutions# G( q* j6 p- Q3 {
3. Seeks opportunities to ensure sustainability of the organization through
: x+ _6 w& a# W P, l' d9 z; hfunding opportunities and maintaining initiatives/ Q% d1 [/ X3 C8 X0 N6 N/ z$ ~
4. Liaise with funders, public and non-profit organizations and community
0 k% O& v( e4 @, L" ]organizations as well as the media and build strategic relationships with

regular examination by competent outside auditors, selected by the board of5 w! n( t# j6 {
directors, and at the regular annual meeting, present a statement to the
; f" O, P* o! R+ {! r+ rmembers of the Coalition’s financial condition.

9 _! g' _8 y0 I( [Relationship of the Coordinator to the Board
7 l. X: ?5 o9 V! R: e0 xAll operating decisions, employing and supervising personnel, choosing ways to& C7 h2 |3 S2 ]8 c- l- `
implement policies, planning the Coalition’s day-to-day activities, and coordinating
' s7 J% {6 m6 m9 F% Y1 ^* Xoperations are a part of the Coordinator’s responsibility.
, D$ R$ c, Z' d& T' U" x# YThe Coordinator shares some responsibilities jointly with the board, such as longrange planning. The Coordinator usually provides the initiative and then assists the board in decision-making. The purpose, future directions, broad basic policies, and: G/ m& @) `7 F% r! t
aims and objectives of the organizations are decided upon by this process. It should6 R6 p, @1 A; M7 }/ e2 ?+ L
be noted that the board members make the policy decisions guided by membership
: n" ~2 R+ ^# P. r9 L7 aparticipation and the Coordinator should confine his or her activities to helping and3 Y, l5 x, [2 W7 _: N4 @# m
facilitating this process with the Board. The Coordinator attends all board of
) Q2 H5 }8 i' D! h5 n$ a j: @; D& N/ Cdirectors' meetings and make available a business report and a monthly financial
$ Y6 A4 g$ m' s4 L/ e# P: Istatement as a minimum requirement. She/he brings to the board's attention all

directors on the development of new policies and appraises the effectiveness of

for the complex dynamics of emerging immigrant and refugee
