The Coordinator of the Multicultural Coalition1 f2 U' x5 X& U$ [0 h3 |+ ]7 g0 ^
Roles and Functions% `6 w% Q7 _2 T5 w0 d' f& ~
The Coordinator is responsible for the over-all management and operations of the
5 J7 M) |% v+ \organization. The Coordinator defines the objectives, policies and goals for the5 m( {/ X$ K' F7 j( Q) H9 C) K) B
operations of the organization staff within the general board policies. He/she has c0 ?9 A: ?. J
the important responsibility of accurately reporting on financial progress,
: m7 I% [9 i. soperational concerns, organizational problems and accomplishments at regular' H i. g( B5 ], d/ D% J
board meetings. Short-range planning is the responsibility of the Coordinator and is
- v5 g% e) {) R: i+ ^conducted within the policy guidelines of the board. The Coordinator is an
: s3 Z- `0 s" Y+ i( E6 Temployee of the board and therefore should not be part of the board which hires* C1 q1 s2 M, q, {
staff and sets their salaries. However, the Coordinator should be required to attend" k7 U( n/ {! v# \8 d
all board meetings and be an active, nonvoting participant.

% V/ J" H" q4 t) ]The specific functions of the coordinator include the following:$ n" l2 k; W( r
1. Provides over-all coordination of Coalition activities in consultation with the9 l/ B- T+ F. Z/ R
officers of the Coalition
- j" @; H B% t, f3 Z b& r2 ^: r2. Builds and sustain relationships and partnerships with ethnocultural" M# w$ M- K0 {4 X, X2 A
organizations, immigrant and refugee communities, voluntary organizations
0 w1 m* X% \6 V" a5 @2 B/ o0 qand public institutions
. V2 D* l3 \ M5 Y3. Seeks opportunities to ensure sustainability of the organization through# {( m6 C" I( l m" \
funding opportunities and maintaining initiatives
: S% v- o1 H6 G) g+ z1 Z2 s; K4. Liaise with funders, public and non-profit organizations and community
% v. c7 f8 k" P) U! gorganizations as well as the media and build strategic relationships with

5. Promotes transformative leadership among formal and informal community

participation of ethnocultural communities with the larger Canadian society

$ e5 L5 F/ K; f4 C# Y+ o! x5 r1. Maintain an adequate bookkeeping and accounting system; provide for its
$ [- S$ k w. H3 b; }regular examination by competent outside auditors, selected by the board of
7 G1 M6 Y5 c/ e7 {( X$ @directors, and at the regular annual meeting, present a statement to the
' Q9 O$ u- I- r' u' wmembers of the Coalition’s financial condition.' j2 O$ Z5 C1 }( e1 a% Y
2. Recruits and hires staff for programs and other initiatives of the) _& \% S- U# v2 n" j

" V6 W- S. C& p- C. |, QRelationship of the Coordinator to the Board
, S" r8 l t7 L& F4 a0 b3 Z7 eAll operating decisions, employing and supervising personnel, choosing ways to
9 g0 P' J4 R- A) T, L% @' `implement policies, planning the Coalition’s day-to-day activities, and coordinating0 j" j! V* t. H V! p
operations are a part of the Coordinator’s responsibility.
+ Z: b0 X1 o& Q' {* }& FThe Coordinator shares some responsibilities jointly with the board, such as longrange planning. The Coordinator usually provides the initiative and then assists the board in decision-making. The purpose, future directions, broad basic policies, and
' g' t% \; P8 G4 v8 {8 taims and objectives of the organizations are decided upon by this process. It should
/ x+ b' ]2 q1 d% {1 l; M% Jbe noted that the board members make the policy decisions guided by membership# n u& o+ v$ r0 d2 Q$ `
participation and the Coordinator should confine his or her activities to helping and
7 g6 ?7 q# ?& y, T5 a6 ffacilitating this process with the Board. The Coordinator attends all board of5 D; Z+ F w# a' x, o; M
directors' meetings and make available a business report and a monthly financial/ ~- Y9 g: l2 [" v1 i+ n
statement as a minimum requirement. She/he brings to the board's attention all/ `' s% x) }/ P s6 e6 K, J$ M
matters requiring board consideration and action. She/he confers with the board of) x$ ^/ B4 } O3 C: ~ N5 E: C
directors on the development of new policies and appraises the effectiveness of. t5 a" f3 C! B. V. N( H
policies already adopted
