The Coordinator of the Multicultural Coalition
7 P; n" j, ?- d e" o, _ kRoles and Functions
( x3 i; `7 h# v% o+ c7 |& [The Coordinator is responsible for the over-all management and operations of the: G( _9 |( ^8 R; X8 m: R, N
organization. The Coordinator defines the objectives, policies and goals for the
, a& Z# b/ Z! `operations of the organization staff within the general board policies. He/she has
1 e- {4 H# J! T# X5 \ k8 e& Vthe important responsibility of accurately reporting on financial progress,
: h! I6 ^6 p- G/ U' k* `operational concerns, organizational problems and accomplishments at regular6 Z1 [5 ?2 o6 W0 q; X
board meetings. Short-range planning is the responsibility of the Coordinator and is( C# y, e9 |- s' ^
conducted within the policy guidelines of the board. The Coordinator is an$ Q% M1 l& O( b2 C t; M
employee of the board and therefore should not be part of the board which hires
3 M6 {' ~( b9 _) L6 Q8 R" ystaff and sets their salaries. However, the Coordinator should be required to attend" N1 @/ z2 C8 d- ^2 k5 O. a
all board meetings and be an active, nonvoting participant.

The specific functions of the coordinator include the following:
( u7 ~3 Z+ X- ]1. Provides over-all coordination of Coalition activities in consultation with the# d5 h' i ^$ @. G. L6 U
officers of the Coalition* t3 U1 i' N, ?1 d
2. Builds and sustain relationships and partnerships with ethnocultural+ e6 l. h3 w: ]; V* ]
organizations, immigrant and refugee communities, voluntary organizations% [7 M% S$ X0 b
and public institutions, H( Z* v+ c' @5 H; s4 s1 W
3. Seeks opportunities to ensure sustainability of the organization through+ u! D% U2 _5 k& w) A
funding opportunities and maintaining initiatives
3 @6 }/ G$ F }1 C1 j4. Liaise with funders, public and non-profit organizations and community9 q( r+ P8 S+ L F+ x
organizations as well as the media and build strategic relationships with
% D; {: X7 C6 i2 j7 ~2 p$ z/ _these organizations# g! H N$ G3 V1 R. s! i4 h
5. Promotes transformative leadership among formal and informal community9 T, s0 c. d9 _) z# r* W
leaders9 [0 I- T1 [& Y
6. Advances the community animation process as a bridging strategy for civic
' @6 ^5 k9 G# m! w( hparticipation of ethnocultural communities with the larger Canadian society
# G& v) v4 s; o8 W+ |7. Offer opportunities for service providers to learn and experience working8 I3 M+ u3 N+ [1 W+ M
with groups and communities with culturally, ethnically and linguistically

& X+ I5 `! n, J3 I ?; _9 x" jAdministrative responsibilities:3 ^8 B2 ?3 h7 i
1. Maintain an adequate bookkeeping and accounting system; provide for its; ^4 r) J8 t, i
regular examination by competent outside auditors, selected by the board of1 B4 R7 q6 \$ M, @4 r/ P
directors, and at the regular annual meeting, present a statement to the c8 u- |$ e; K6 @; U8 r: k
members of the Coalition’s financial condition.
! i' D& Z+ V7 f' s! B! o2. Recruits and hires staff for programs and other initiatives of the5 t! A4 r! D/ J) d

Relationship of the Coordinator to the Board6 T K1 d: \3 [' w) p
All operating decisions, employing and supervising personnel, choosing ways to
7 n4 x6 W6 M H# O4 i8 j/ j: wimplement policies, planning the Coalition’s day-to-day activities, and coordinating* y$ ]- q. p0 m" H& p' A" s
operations are a part of the Coordinator’s responsibility.% q% `( g! D( E/ M2 L) [* \
The Coordinator shares some responsibilities jointly with the board, such as longrange planning. The Coordinator usually provides the initiative and then assists the board in decision-making. The purpose, future directions, broad basic policies, and
4 Y, V) f3 T2 a$ M. @/ d- C* f% u9 `aims and objectives of the organizations are decided upon by this process. It should* S' I" w0 A( Y, [
be noted that the board members make the policy decisions guided by membership
# E% K% l4 K6 j; Xparticipation and the Coordinator should confine his or her activities to helping and
# j1 v' Y* V& X/ u4 k9 b! Yfacilitating this process with the Board. The Coordinator attends all board of
; X% V: O2 c# G' z( Y# D/ x8 Zdirectors' meetings and make available a business report and a monthly financial" e S0 z9 P# {: z$ ?0 [" Z7 p
statement as a minimum requirement. She/he brings to the board's attention all) I! g* D) D4 E) V) K
matters requiring board consideration and action. She/he confers with the board of7 {! t2 f! N+ o
directors on the development of new policies and appraises the effectiveness of
