The Coordinator of the Multicultural Coalition- z7 G! u5 F# f( E/ P! A
Roles and Functions5 N, ], F. P. R: a4 c
The Coordinator is responsible for the over-all management and operations of the0 l7 k1 d; M; \3 H- t l7 g- w
organization. The Coordinator defines the objectives, policies and goals for the% @6 L* Z3 t! p# p8 }
operations of the organization staff within the general board policies. He/she has
/ A7 N) S4 O4 g% H* v7 L( Qthe important responsibility of accurately reporting on financial progress,. j4 m: y0 S$ U4 ?2 A$ l) Q3 n, }
operational concerns, organizational problems and accomplishments at regular3 h3 G) d$ C9 h5 ^+ P- V: C( g6 E, B
board meetings. Short-range planning is the responsibility of the Coordinator and is3 H6 L3 L0 D, M1 z
conducted within the policy guidelines of the board. The Coordinator is an2 \1 c& l% |: ~( ?
employee of the board and therefore should not be part of the board which hires
6 U0 k* |' |# B- j9 fstaff and sets their salaries. However, the Coordinator should be required to attend
3 E$ i6 Z- Z6 l4 v# _all board meetings and be an active, nonvoting participant.

Functions and responsibilities:( k5 }' ^6 D" l' o
The specific functions of the coordinator include the following:
/ H8 ?) Y2 P' `1 S, R A* e1 S1. Provides over-all coordination of Coalition activities in consultation with the
/ v. H& n% \# g! z! d2 Qofficers of the Coalition$ M: m0 h. c- J* R5 i" X
2. Builds and sustain relationships and partnerships with ethnocultural
1 @2 K! Y" h) V* `organizations, immigrant and refugee communities, voluntary organizations1 X$ `9 G' ]1 E. z+ Q
and public institutions* \* {. z1 q" L
3. Seeks opportunities to ensure sustainability of the organization through
2 b$ c s6 P% @9 q; ]funding opportunities and maintaining initiatives
$ R. N5 l8 L7 J) ]4. Liaise with funders, public and non-profit organizations and community
& V& q4 v+ B b8 a j/ ^organizations as well as the media and build strategic relationships with

5. Promotes transformative leadership among formal and informal community- w) V* ?% \( `) b
leaders! n6 \5 F& b. c
6. Advances the community animation process as a bridging strategy for civic I6 h& w% w: s! w
participation of ethnocultural communities with the larger Canadian society

with groups and communities with culturally, ethnically and linguistically

' w% m+ _2 J+ j! b" S% u' gAdministrative responsibilities:' x, T. P" v! i- |" o$ H4 }
1. Maintain an adequate bookkeeping and accounting system; provide for its
: y2 b# k S7 q/ V0 Oregular examination by competent outside auditors, selected by the board of
" s1 `1 A" L# rdirectors, and at the regular annual meeting, present a statement to the
% X9 h3 G6 e- D8 K5 I; h& L$ r, ~members of the Coalition’s financial condition.
1 j7 q/ g- F) {2 R: m2. Recruits and hires staff for programs and other initiatives of the4 r0 v& {7 b" i! `+ N M* B

Relationship of the Coordinator to the Board' @/ o c# I- G' K& E& v
All operating decisions, employing and supervising personnel, choosing ways to
& F7 y3 x$ |$ \% b$ X$ V6 Bimplement policies, planning the Coalition’s day-to-day activities, and coordinating1 ]: O3 }) }) X
operations are a part of the Coordinator’s responsibility.
- ~$ K/ y( v6 o9 M7 I9 ]) i0 }The Coordinator shares some responsibilities jointly with the board, such as longrange planning. The Coordinator usually provides the initiative and then assists the board in decision-making. The purpose, future directions, broad basic policies, and4 Z, O, X0 j; n/ a
aims and objectives of the organizations are decided upon by this process. It should5 F) s! f a. h$ R q
be noted that the board members make the policy decisions guided by membership# e' }- S* C$ y" j7 R9 w
participation and the Coordinator should confine his or her activities to helping and
# s7 C7 g7 u3 O6 {+ Q" S- bfacilitating this process with the Board. The Coordinator attends all board of+ ? R o+ b2 R+ ^
directors' meetings and make available a business report and a monthly financial
* a9 a8 E; [1 i7 s4 P. v# tstatement as a minimum requirement. She/he brings to the board's attention all
" V4 I. l3 W+ q" x8 i4 {$ m. f- W9 lmatters requiring board consideration and action. She/he confers with the board of2 h0 n0 ^' r: Q6 m6 d7 a
directors on the development of new policies and appraises the effectiveness of

of immigrant and refugee communities with the interests and mandates

possible extension depending on funding.
