The Coordinator of the Multicultural Coalition
% ]* d3 ^" i% ?' w* W' a# xRoles and Functions
$ H: j+ l0 W: j+ D* Y$ C5 @7 d9 p9 tThe Coordinator is responsible for the over-all management and operations of the
- O$ t. f" x A: U( lorganization. The Coordinator defines the objectives, policies and goals for the: ]) A4 {' s: l& G1 E
operations of the organization staff within the general board policies. He/she has0 b0 P- H0 |/ N
the important responsibility of accurately reporting on financial progress,& N7 d9 Z0 h5 c, b0 `
operational concerns, organizational problems and accomplishments at regular
0 y. g! l8 \! m: L: m' Bboard meetings. Short-range planning is the responsibility of the Coordinator and is
# Y/ w( e5 w' i5 M& j; y9 \conducted within the policy guidelines of the board. The Coordinator is an
# w) O1 A9 Y0 _- K, r Hemployee of the board and therefore should not be part of the board which hires4 T5 F* @/ H3 J; \1 n
staff and sets their salaries. However, the Coordinator should be required to attend, I& ~8 Q# z0 H
all board meetings and be an active, nonvoting participant.

The specific functions of the coordinator include the following:: o1 i; ^/ w6 W: G4 n& [& ]
1. Provides over-all coordination of Coalition activities in consultation with the" G$ s3 W- ?: j" J" Q4 E
officers of the Coalition$ w/ Y; {" D5 I: }! _
2. Builds and sustain relationships and partnerships with ethnocultural0 B6 L& v a$ M$ G" U. p" v
organizations, immigrant and refugee communities, voluntary organizations
3 D9 q2 B4 n# B( x S, |and public institutions# P0 K( U: E. b" a+ n$ u
3. Seeks opportunities to ensure sustainability of the organization through
, K" A/ a0 N! @& Q- T, m& xfunding opportunities and maintaining initiatives
$ i0 F1 \3 Y5 A# k0 f. z0 }% q4. Liaise with funders, public and non-profit organizations and community! e" m- m; s+ x t
organizations as well as the media and build strategic relationships with1 e' F* H, g: T1 I" C4 N) h

5. Promotes transformative leadership among formal and informal community8 b3 l$ S9 n- W" G2 L

7. Offer opportunities for service providers to learn and experience working; H) t7 b& O5 s) S* W9 g
with groups and communities with culturally, ethnically and linguistically

Administrative responsibilities:: h" s [3 Q/ C/ t% k' y* W
1. Maintain an adequate bookkeeping and accounting system; provide for its
* v1 ^' A) l* C+ n* m6 zregular examination by competent outside auditors, selected by the board of. B% t# F" m! {. p- i- g
directors, and at the regular annual meeting, present a statement to the( T M5 t; R- S# p+ q0 z& Q
members of the Coalition’s financial condition.* m( d( |1 V. i/ U( _" r$ K9 B
2. Recruits and hires staff for programs and other initiatives of the

- D6 E1 h3 M3 m+ ` I6 R$ v5 D; p3 q7 kRelationship of the Coordinator to the Board5 O9 o/ ^0 ^ T6 K* D
All operating decisions, employing and supervising personnel, choosing ways to' K/ o3 P, \7 X8 F: r
implement policies, planning the Coalition’s day-to-day activities, and coordinating5 i6 s w1 O# A
operations are a part of the Coordinator’s responsibility.
% Q4 Q4 M1 g) Q5 eThe Coordinator shares some responsibilities jointly with the board, such as longrange planning. The Coordinator usually provides the initiative and then assists the board in decision-making. The purpose, future directions, broad basic policies, and
% \4 q, B( B8 Baims and objectives of the organizations are decided upon by this process. It should& u! N; B/ B1 k3 F6 l
be noted that the board members make the policy decisions guided by membership
9 f. @7 V, Q- Lparticipation and the Coordinator should confine his or her activities to helping and% u; K2 e# B2 l/ S' j/ H
facilitating this process with the Board. The Coordinator attends all board of8 N5 y8 d+ V: u9 i
directors' meetings and make available a business report and a monthly financial# G. Q# |7 @6 g
statement as a minimum requirement. She/he brings to the board's attention all
+ A1 W5 z6 @+ _# | pmatters requiring board consideration and action. She/he confers with the board of
/ g- {, m7 J+ N6 n( R( ldirectors on the development of new policies and appraises the effectiveness of6 X8 C7 ~0 P/ C9 t$ l. E, L, I

1. Intercultural sensitivity, flexibility and an understanding or appreciation
