 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned ) h/ U6 j! k/ L# A
to their first ministry, to reopen a church
9 \* l: `/ j2 V* f1 Zin suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October 9 {2 H* C7 A( L0 y
excited about their opportunities. When they saw
% b. w0 x$ L1 V. h9 M3 I, R! ~their church, it was very run down and needed 1 i/ M6 e" ^2 [2 g; i
much work. They set a goal to have everything ! m# l9 U0 T5 l2 c- }
done in time to have their first service * r- Q( V; E% F4 r6 F
on Christmas Eve. ' N7 _$ Z+ O4 N7 J% n/ i
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
. b3 U. F* r2 x1 k3 \painting, etc, and on December 18
9 _& l( D- K) b q$ g# U) Qwere ahead of schedule and just about finished. $ C+ s" @, f3 N/ Q+ M
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving . P. U T9 _, V5 _* Z9 r
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
1 ?8 \# D' V. [- W; ?1 m O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church./ L5 S! [/ @' @3 e" e: G
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had
/ I- ~; m, M' N0 j( A1 wleaked, causing a large area of plaster about 8 G, f, S3 I6 m* j3 `
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall / G/ V0 q) y: ?: j
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, " C: _! f+ C& P. y2 w7 a$ D' W
beginning about head high.
1 B7 N W- \. {& b! X. {T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
6 s4 k5 f( z" u: iand not knowing what else to do but postpone
. }: P9 A* V' L" ?, m' D; a% M: bthe Christmas Eve service, headed home.
% X9 p4 U8 y4 r9 p. O* ROn the way he noticed that a local business was 4 Y1 O1 A; i* y2 y9 a, q2 C
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he 4 w @3 @) a) U
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
' y9 P. t2 c( U( M( a4 T% ~8 Shandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
3 n( w7 E8 x: b# _6 c' _' Gwith exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross ; Y% P R G! n
embroidered right in the center. It was just

) o3 |& \ E9 {) x, t4 J
+ _3 Y) s2 c2 l$ f/ x5 X
2 h8 E8 @% \, j9 w0 d$ Z- h( m# I, t' a
! }+ r- j$ y* g, n) @7 f5 [+ b; k1 O
) F) S9 D* o. r2 J R( ?the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
# Q3 C" V+ g) \) E9 g! pB y this time it had started to snow. An older ( l, U& r4 \+ l7 W! G6 K, V
woman running from the opposite direction was 6 O7 B8 @) C2 ]6 C. h" z
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor ; y. [% ?- }, k
invited her to wait in the warm church for
+ J& u) V$ E8 V% P' k _3 j* g- {. mthe next bus 45 minutes later.
, `6 i& |7 Y; \" N9 v9 v3 F, \" g c( S, X7 I( R' y; H! f. B% |
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor 2 e: c3 p% T$ U7 C8 w0 K
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
A& W/ d% g. D8 f% q7 ]5 `up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor 9 f, w) J) f2 G
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. 7 C1 G4 c- b! i" L
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center* }2 ^- t( y9 M2 O6 Q& ]; G
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
8 V D, h, J- d5 m! oshe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
) r# e" F$ V$ }; b- U2 PThe pastor explained. The woman asked him to check. U# p7 f9 l) K) _: ^. Y1 x: H6 ^
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into+ a. J& w5 a# u# C% j; E
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had " }% s% N0 S J# m1 `' ]
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . * T& _' `7 H: L) Y6 y7 B
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
& }1 S. I/ l/ N$ K1 j. [' Ptold how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
# g6 L# ?9 B- s5 {2 t5 u) ?woman explained that before the war she and
* L- {* g X$ Y# gher husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
9 [2 n$ E# ]/ b' s# V g" l- _- _" }! L1 r0 o& j4 {3 [/ u# f
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. * x9 [ U1 C# i: S1 f
Her husband was going to follow her the next week. B) Z* l- d8 H7 X9 T
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her ^' b4 z' e: v* q
husband or her home again. 0 K) x( u# y5 x3 V! I
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
0 D( z- E7 ^ V$ f* h1 @but she made the pastor keep it for the church.
0 r# p7 `, `2 E) X5 @8 O* k3 F" M3 Z1 \The pastor insisted on driving her home. That
* G& j. E& I" X$ rwas the least he could do. She lived on the other
6 L! N5 a* m6 I3 Bside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
' u& Y, A$ m' U. [" E" Xfor the day for a housecleaning job.+ z2 I ~. U, A7 @; J
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
1 s* n* y8 t3 |: a$ TEve. The church was almost full. The music and the 4 I( R0 H- k7 }; C1 n4 j
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the - \- q8 s$ t. t
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door 6 B' O1 \3 n$ l3 ]" Z$ A+ o
and many said that they would return.. ' K1 r* B$ C+ S e- l3 i ]+ O
One older man, whom the pastor recognized
3 ` j o$ |$ D) s5 p {( qfrom the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
. Y( |" \* w1 r2 e epews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he 7 ^! r2 {1 m: s( v) m9 y% @
wasn't leaving.
8 r' T% A' k9 YThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
6 Q2 E* @+ L6 W+ Bthe front wall because it was identical to one * K- e7 I1 u8 E* i3 H
that his wife had made years ago when : X+ h W' x- H( Y5 D3 ~
they lived in Austria before the war and how
) T$ J& V' R: g' zcould there be two tablecloths so much alike? 6 D: g l2 E; N' x6 X
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he ' }1 `7 w/ S# M+ [/ B9 t
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was % S' Z; Z$ |! ]1 k+ w8 Q- H( h
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
4 P" ~3 Z3 G, ^put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home- b# h: J2 V) v0 {0 l( R/ x& T' B
again all the 35 years between.
$ [" S+ J& ~1 K' w% P8 uT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
. C$ {0 P' H1 c, t' Ctake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten ( D- v, n( [9 V" i- ^& }( U
Island and to the same house where the pastor
! T, d2 k# p% K- y* r, }had taken the woman three days earlier. & n* q: S( c! Y4 H+ k7 u
He helped the man climb the three flights of
2 N6 k1 e; F3 z3 p% H! ^stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on& S3 B6 ?7 G( l) D0 |6 c
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas " [7 D. H3 z/ @- G
reunion he could ever imagine.

S o when the road you're traveling seems 3 \" y# R9 k0 M% \; W/ m6 q
difficult at best, just remember I'm here 9 a+ ?0 i3 m) k9 E" _
