to their first ministry, to reopen a church y; |! Z3 }$ n9 m
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October 2 U. i* T2 [9 J, z5 r+ y8 T% P
excited about their opportunities. When they saw
3 x/ T8 |7 V2 ]3 J' d" ?their church, it was very run down and needed
( }, s9 w) b9 Q6 c6 A" ]$ rmuch work. They set a goal to have everything 8 l# N0 N. w2 B4 c' v, A, u
done in time to have their first service ) F! G6 i, D3 q1 u0 x- J
on Christmas Eve.
) X; t6 b/ G4 L! ?# o! X$ fT hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,) c$ O' a! T6 y* s0 H' m% J
painting, etc, and on December 18
9 } _" G$ o6 {% N' w; T) x( X. Ywere ahead of schedule and just about finished.
2 g: e' P; B4 r5 a% r3 d' |& q/ hO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
# x8 {' P+ X& c' Q9 p% }rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. & E' k" {6 ]' f) l& d1 A8 J9 I
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
. s4 X) G- n8 w5 Z8 p8 UHis heart sank when he saw that the roof had; ^, A- f4 X7 w5 n; G4 ?
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about
* R8 Q: p. F" g1 X! x- A20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
* M$ N% K/ b: Q, ?( l' Wof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
+ v% a7 n# |$ _% K. ebeginning about head high.
- z" b" i' f) X$ R2 q- @T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
1 |& X& o2 c' ? N1 Xand not knowing what else to do but postpone
/ s6 x5 {$ b% Mthe Christmas Eve service, headed home. 6 P4 v1 r" Q* R: M }- @
On the way he noticed that a local business was p) |5 C8 x3 h# n0 J* I7 B/ E
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he
+ J; |. m8 }; O, u- b7 ?stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
) h3 L9 C, h4 I9 F) |8 s% B0 b/ dhandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
$ y. y1 }' { J3 ^with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross 8 h" F. a ]) s
embroidered right in the center. It was just

4 n( X4 J& T0 L: h) N6 M- N' v, i. ?
5 j9 Y/ g) O! ~) `: d( @8 D+ i: W( m. C" |3 G0 v/ Q) C

the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. & v% D, [- @% l
B y this time it had started to snow. An older # g, U9 X" J8 F9 |0 r
woman running from the opposite direction was ' e: ~6 _/ f$ z
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
8 H! {' G) N" Z& e- y( W+ N- d8 hinvited her to wait in the warm church for ' g- r" z! l5 E# a
the next bus 45 minutes later.
( ~4 l( m8 V; V6 q# |+ e" t1 K2 P5 l% t v, Z0 \% R* S
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor ' G+ X! M: M: p; G1 j
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put 1 g! d+ _! @7 U2 C4 j
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor # I/ d. D( D) z( u2 f
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
: v, x' N, ~ {- w" R1 PT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
2 c" _% `& m4 u* taisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"+ ^7 e* J3 X7 B2 h, [$ P9 S3 C' m
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
! e7 [1 [% ?- e: S7 D) MThe pastor explained. The woman asked him to check7 z) \" @/ m/ L0 O
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
. N, v: [3 |' T5 B3 N0 Jit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had ) a9 g4 B T# O2 w
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
# }* B% h$ U3 [& W* E) i4 LT he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor # [+ X$ @6 L% s3 K, f) |$ t
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
7 |$ p' {( c k2 ^0 Rwoman explained that before the war she and 2 T; z9 E. y* p3 Z' @( p1 t$ B
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria . 4 o* T- e6 N* z. L$ D/ I
; B# R" J5 \& o! H
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
' c6 B4 ~( ~" G3 Q+ r0 ~Her husband was going to follow her the next week. 0 z! H( G6 @* m5 n9 s; e
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her % |. |! J+ M7 ~& G3 A9 W
husband or her home again.
# Y- r' n/ c/ A$ c/ F# X/ w) {T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;' a! _( f* j9 J a7 A5 f
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.
) ?) Q* H% ]; S; K0 }The pastor insisted on driving her home. That
' B, y3 N7 c3 t- J. pwas the least he could do. She lived on the other
2 v; B# V; X6 nside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn , O" Q: X4 X/ W
for the day for a housecleaning job.
" o9 [/ C( s8 M- `% t! T5 BW hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas ) }, d6 U9 T: q) G4 m0 _* o& w: N# ]
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the 0 n- } w6 O4 s% `' T) J
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the ' M0 ]9 k' O5 @
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door , p1 K6 M( ~# u3 }7 W
and many said that they would return.. 8 W% m+ A" w; V- j6 y
One older man, whom the pastor recognized
" p6 T+ f& i, A% K2 J ufrom the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the 8 P7 B$ d) K4 G; E5 G# V5 [
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he * t: _" l9 `) M* h4 D
wasn't leaving.
; x4 ^7 [5 U7 L8 a2 G' M- b$ _The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on 3 z! h& Q5 q( f( a* ^' ~9 t; I8 }
the front wall because it was identical to one 0 t! s3 m5 Y. k
that his wife had made years ago when
7 m9 Q2 Q/ E% I1 }4 J: v, `they lived in Austria before the war and how ) M& S6 v, Q- T; u7 o2 \
could there be two tablecloths so much alike?
, R: ^! b& |' D: s+ iH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
6 j: {( l9 @2 G1 I4 x3 Cforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
- D5 f- ~1 {* m; W& g4 Ssupposed to follow her, but he was arrested and/ r% U( T! u8 R% U; ~' F
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home
" t, Q; B+ ?* p7 e1 p' I B* u$ Pagain all the 35 years between.
1 f& Z. ^7 [( t+ OT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
( K& Y. g/ @7 B" U! H+ Ztake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
; A2 g: K; ]5 e3 G6 H& qIsland and to the same house where the pastor
% ~, K4 J& m" b+ Q( q1 `, Mhad taken the woman three days earlier. : Q( F. O& s$ k/ N, a
He helped the man climb the three flights of
" n/ V' N' c1 ]5 ]2 P6 I" W/ Fstairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
/ o/ v! Q; z5 athe door and he saw the greatest Christmas " Q A" ? t& l; Y
reunion he could ever imagine.+ W( a; K5 M9 r$ r+ \1 Q
