 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

$ Z4 s( \+ y/ b5 o The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned 7 H+ H4 Z. a% m% x
to their first ministry, to reopen a church 3 A @$ ?" ?0 T9 T7 ?
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October 7 y6 s& }7 [: n5 L( }' }$ h
excited about their opportunities. When they saw
B, S" x8 M1 \6 v" K' atheir church, it was very run down and needed . r; H5 \9 |% Q0 N
much work. They set a goal to have everything
9 q% K! w2 n3 e4 l' _0 adone in time to have their first service
3 S+ S3 Z! Z* m7 X, L* N* Aon Christmas Eve. ( N8 g \1 Z8 |
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
$ Q1 @0 w3 F: N& N0 z: Zpainting, etc, and on December 18
, [5 F" h5 E3 k# o0 V0 kwere ahead of schedule and just about finished. / F/ u, @1 _6 K5 c( x
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
8 w$ X4 R( b6 q& irainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
6 }: T; X, o; s# I; ~5 Z; }7 P O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.8 H* b4 q3 P, A, f; m$ ]9 |6 ^+ E: O
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had
" F8 X: ~! O! ?' ~leaked, causing a large area of plaster about
0 l& G2 C1 @' B+ a, T* D20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall ( Y% `8 l; k g# }! [% {
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
! O- p) b8 i0 qbeginning about head high.
/ Z- c% P4 F/ f4 w7 N$ \" BT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
Z3 Q, _* }6 Uand not knowing what else to do but postpone 6 ]! h, }/ z2 v1 i, T
the Christmas Eve service, headed home. 2 O2 L& h- L9 l! k: f, M7 G6 b
On the way he noticed that a local business was % x) c- R6 e+ R0 S; N2 f
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he
# Z7 D& K/ B; ~% B/ U# k7 ~; ?stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, 7 r5 F1 {2 R7 e m
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth # _5 g# h5 I: X# k3 M
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
' W4 Z; j, ]6 Q+ aembroidered right in the center. It was just
6 M1 M7 }9 R* l8 ], { ( d& u9 y" u4 f+ B D/ q# G) a2 f
9 g' F4 [6 @. r" N% }1 M) J
2 Z, u* l- S) y7 V% Y \; e8 D; M5 A! t! d" }! R
6 X- P6 O$ ]* N2 p0 r: a: l
& z4 E* p- R1 gthe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
3 B7 R% \* k6 ]4 ZB y this time it had started to snow. An older 7 F, Y1 _' c( k& E ^1 D
woman running from the opposite direction was
1 z* t! g* f" E( H) }trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor ! i5 n! U3 m) ?7 r I: \
invited her to wait in the warm church for ^5 H1 X5 m. X# C, Q2 v3 o
the next bus 45 minutes later. % h7 J& ~6 C5 y9 |" r
6 z9 X; d p, D& g. nShe sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
k m6 d+ t+ t* j( W' Pwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put 3 H' a" z% T$ P% U3 t- P: \) V- m6 a
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor : x5 ~" I, M+ u
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
4 @* `9 g: t/ y( f! D% j3 u: IT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
6 [- V0 l- ]: Uaisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
\( c( _) A9 G; C! w2 ?: Xshe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" - r+ L& w# A5 f% e7 y
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check- P& M: [9 ~' F. Q" L& y
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
: M0 X9 h F( W0 u) hit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had & l# a! M# S) `. P8 E6 F/ n
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . 9 i% N( z4 T( E1 L3 P4 R
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
9 z1 J. ~: A. btold how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The ! K) b% a& X v' L
woman explained that before the war she and
$ J( |5 O5 q2 @, x, zher husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
- D- O- V' G/ _' S5 W- b0 }: r' A {# S$ a- F8 M" q' n
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. & H. J* a# X- T( c( b
Her husband was going to follow her the next week.
3 }4 [1 v1 ~5 |3 p# J/ LHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her 3 c% d$ Q+ Q+ ]6 |* f
husband or her home again. * T( w+ v( e! A- n+ f. ~$ K) g' t
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
: z" G! n( J% Y' Vbut she made the pastor keep it for the church.5 W- {% F+ X% O; i4 M5 K0 J
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That8 `* x& R [& f R' D+ j
was the least he could do. She lived on the other
. _' G8 O, I1 C8 b! ~side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn 6 z, A2 f) o- y$ N4 m V1 x+ R7 E; e% U
for the day for a housecleaning job.
( j) x4 ]. W( p% lW hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
# @5 i8 ]. N* _9 hEve. The church was almost full. The music and the
3 A8 [, Q. c" E {" `spirit were great. At the end of the service, the ( T, t. Z& M1 O8 x
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door / ]' {, p1 O$ _7 G- m9 W& Q' o5 v
and many said that they would return.. + G6 t& D% @+ I, y; T
One older man, whom the pastor recognized
: q* k/ H7 x* T2 [& P& y1 sfrom the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the ' Y% r- i4 K$ h/ e9 x
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
* {9 j& ^1 ]0 p# T+ \, q) c0 A. Cwasn't leaving. _& O% S* K2 d7 i( q$ K/ V( A0 w
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on 7 m* D* e3 p) \/ S, [5 T- O- _
the front wall because it was identical to one ; H7 }( S3 y7 c- n3 Y; c# @
that his wife had made years ago when % ^" y! p4 o+ ^
they lived in Austria before the war and how
4 T3 _5 X# d _( Icould there be two tablecloths so much alike?
, M% f' l' e1 V: D) m7 T3 iH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
1 k s |9 q5 ~! R+ H4 F2 Rforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
$ i o" p6 M! h- ~9 gsupposed to follow her, but he was arrested and+ b6 J8 D8 M: V9 ?
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home& I" }7 J+ j8 @' e
again all the 35 years between. 0 V9 e8 r I3 \3 \
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to 5 R1 h$ [- Q) d
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
6 ]) e* @7 b% G8 b0 a8 zIsland and to the same house where the pastor
+ y/ A' z9 a2 _; [) {had taken the woman three days earlier. 6 Z! ?+ L6 {/ x2 L7 }; X( r
He helped the man climb the three flights of, G1 G- f* B! ?: |. |) F1 u
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on5 W* S' N7 W$ q4 K
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas
, F6 }" Z# |' y) T1 @2 creunion he could ever imagine.
