The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will
5 \$ o3 ~8 e2 I5 S( m' }0 K7 ibe the official language of the European Union rather than German, which was
the other possibility.

% q( \2 [" d5 U6 bAs part of the negotiations, the British Government conceded that English
spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5 year phase-in
plan that would become known as "EuroEnglish".

0 P: T. X6 f- sIn the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c". Sertainly, this will make
9 C. }5 L/ Z9 D, d3 `) Zthe sivil servants jump with joy.

The hard "c" will be dropped in favour of "k". This should klear up
: _5 e) X8 m( I! t' J& K$ dkonfusion, and keyboards kan have one less letter.

6 L2 B! N" Q9 V# K# V' k& yThere will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year when the
% h- \+ m; i0 B  @; [$ e2 s: H  ?4 Ytroublesome "ph" will be replaced with "f". This will make words like

$ r6 D6 }; Y" n% T( ^
In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to
reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible.

disgrasful and it should go away.
