' D3 G7 H& Z5 E( H- ~EDMONTON - More than 30,000 people moved to Edmonton between 2008 and 2009, bringing Edmonton's total population to 782,439, say municipal census numbers released Wednesday morning.) H, v; m8 t2 o. W4 ~! n# X
"It shows the resilience of our city," said Mayor Stephen Mandel.

Mandel said he was surprised by the increase.! g* W) _5 A; c9 y* Z
"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said. ; L6 ^2 l, s: M
Edmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that.& i. c8 ]6 z" v' W+ ?: V
This year's census cost $1.7 million to complete. City Manager Al Mauer said the annual census could be reviewed but, over time, conducting population surveys brings more money and important data to the city. |
