Edmonton's population grows by 30,000- z( g* Y' M' B/ y

" {7 _+ F5 B$ x4 g+ F0 G6 ]3 uEDMONTON - More than 30,000 people moved to Edmonton between 2008 and 2009, bringing Edmonton's total population to 782,439, say municipal census numbers released Wednesday morning.
$ ~5 z* D& w2 R7 l"It shows the resilience of our city," said Mayor Stephen Mandel.
9 o4 [5 C! g! o* t: yThe population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected.

& u' C9 R% S( g$ C( S2 L) d"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said.
9 ~6 a) h# O6 s' P6 oEdmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that.
: l7 j$ V: `9 u$ A3 G# r1 wThis year's census cost $1.7 million to complete. City Manager Al Mauer said the annual census could be reviewed but, over time, conducting population surveys brings more money and important data to the city. |
