Edmonton's population grows by 30,000! f9 p: i0 \1 ?( b- H3 M

EDMONTON - More than 30,000 people moved to Edmonton between 2008 and 2009, bringing Edmonton's total population to 782,439, say municipal census numbers released Wednesday morning.* Y8 n/ R# @; i9 t
"It shows the resilience of our city," said Mayor Stephen Mandel.
8 V6 ~' R6 G6 u1 n: o% BThe population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected.

' d0 ? L `" N& @' R"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said. 6 Z. g4 q# l( @
Edmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that.) v4 I, w. m; a4 W0 ^; y
This year's census cost $1.7 million to complete. City Manager Al Mauer said the annual census could be reviewed but, over time, conducting population surveys brings more money and important data to the city. |
