Oil sands projects fuel provincial construction boom
) h- o% A0 X2 X$ V+ A8 BAccording to a March 2005 inventory of Alberta construction projects, oil sands projects are leading the way in the ever-growing Alberta economy.
9 U/ ~& f7 K% o5 O* L; q8 UThe inventory of construction projects is compiled monthly by Alberta Economic Development( AED ). The list compiles all developments in the province with a value of at least $2 million that are either recently completed, under construction, or planned to start within the next two years. As of March, 946 projects throughout Alberta fit that category.
$ P& \/ |( j k* A. p. IOf these projects, oil sands construction accounts for $69.25 billion – the largest component by far. Suncor’s Firebag Phase 2 in – situ project, Millennium Vacuum Unit, and Voyageur projects are listed among the 47 oil sands initiatives. Projects by Syncrude, OPTI Canada Inc./Nexen Inc., EnCana, Canadian Natural Resources Ltd., and others round out list.
' \8 f: k& u5 A' xOther leading sectors sectors are infrastructure projects totaling $10.55 billion, institutional projects at $5.5 billion, and conventional oil and gas at $4.37 billion.
