I do not think Firefox is faster than IE. There are more viruses to IE just because it's more popular and Firefox is pretty new. If FireFox occupies 80% of the market, who knows what will happen. It's nothing about ActiveX technology. There is nothing that is bulletproof. % v* j3 u8 q( x& l2 \7 U$ L) B% D: |' n( T/ O6 c" B9 p
So just choose based on your own needs.
For whatever reason, Firefox should be safer, I am not saying faster though. But spyware/adware can make your computor very slow. Check you folder:( q: O3 z; A, e4 A

All of them are just cookies. If you do not like the activeX, in XP, you can just disable it in the IE configuration.4 W2 K" f9 v0 P+ ]
