CALGARY — Screams filled the air after a 17-year-old teen was killed after being struck in the head with a pickaxe at a house party.

2 z/ B+ q- `7 h* dNeighbours said about 100 teens were at a house in southeast Calgary when the attack happened in a detached garage about 11:50 p.m. Saturday.

* B+ t% N6 D: c Y- X$ I; ULisa Poole, who lives two doors down from where the teen died, rushed outside when she heard a lot of screaming.

“I was standing out back having a cigarette then I heard a kid screaming, ‘They killed him,’ then they all scattered,” said Jeff, who didn’t want to give his last name. 3 G. s' x; F# ?8 d! T: @/ z: o

Jeff said two high school-aged girls live at the house with their mother. He said large parties are common at the residence.

" p# {+ |0 K# |5 y' s/ H! MChris Briggs, who grew up in the same neighbourhood and was friends with McKay, described him as nice guy and avid athlete. 7 [" w. I* V+ t' K8 P

Staff Sgt. Kevin Forsen said police are currently interviewing more than 40 witnesses to the attack.

“We’re talking to a bunch of people who were there to find out what happened,” he said.
