Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. ; \; P7 G% M) l2 F" z. v% b

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
+ S& i+ Y7 X7 KCouncil met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad % Y7 Q' B4 M8 e$ S6 K8 K* M
news to report from that meeting.

5 z0 |3 e% c$ R0 M2 X8 rFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current % ?$ V5 {' r' u4 s. A/ K
undergraduate international students from the increase to the ( h/ k4 o* w3 M* l
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
& _7 f! l( X+ {6 i( x; l" `, Z- i& e Qstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
/ J7 N3 R" D; Gtuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
* A) D+ P# I2 I. L! q3 d. @8 cAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
- P+ E$ L% V# X% bthe differential for international graduate students.
: t8 @! y1 a0 g; d& r% u
6 P) b4 U* d9 ]Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an - v8 Q. z( a# N" I9 P
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
8 f! _& l; @# Y3 E! B" s4 f/ ?+ \7 I& @220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students . M% @" S& ]- C) b
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At 1 E# i/ q/ Y' ^4 \
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
! p0 @6 @4 L6 N. Y) qtuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
3 M& B& T+ a) u- Uincreases once they are here.* {) W0 S6 v( W- m( i- i

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the , o0 I8 r6 p1 ^% w
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
6 p( S/ V" w7 v$ A( x. Z* |would like to say thank you to all of the international students that * |5 L. c, v) O
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this 8 j; |5 j# _- q2 `: c
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your # k' b; g- S2 z/ d
help. Thank you.
