Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad + Y# z2 F t/ q, n% n- v
news to report from that meeting.
$ N' o5 ^8 z X. X# R7 m3 I& }0 `
0 G D0 M. `, {& ?: Y; {9 Y6 q3 RFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current 9 }, _* w7 [9 O. y/ h" y
undergraduate international students from the increase to the
, [5 B% ?, g9 J- Y& Ddifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international
0 D$ H6 h, Z7 B( T6 a; [. Pstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
1 @4 s9 Y+ f4 e9 l4 e! Ptuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). , q: Z6 }/ \& y
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
- u( i' [% h% W% r H# `* d3 gthe differential for international graduate students.5 i7 ^6 m& Q' N# {
; d- B$ @" B- v" k( n& X
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an " C$ `$ @# V) [% @0 ^( Q2 m; {0 h
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
( x8 J1 {* i7 E0 e220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
. Y" ~% ]) O( ~. M) n& Dwill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At 3 f) A0 C: n$ u+ H* B
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
3 ]/ {" M" h5 W, X! T: l" V- J- Jtuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected # P2 N7 r+ W9 c' v" }% |5 A
increases once they are here.

" A; }- y7 F! @2 HThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
Y: t0 ?: D6 D7 y! g% }2 r6 Jinternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I / D) q c4 O2 p( d1 T
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that , a( k! u5 q: \" t7 T# ]4 C3 N
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
6 G# U$ W- e7 G$ Kincrease. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
