Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

1 z' U3 F5 Z; j0 S1 FYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties + K/ z: w2 k9 G' U' Y
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad ) }3 S1 @2 _1 K
news to report from that meeting.6 h# j: w/ A6 c6 h6 ~' P+ {
3 |& E- K7 s. n% tFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
0 S7 ]0 ~/ U' |" k2 X7 eundergraduate international students from the increase to the 0 i7 L- A1 ^, j" a( k2 D
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
) I% H& j" c {# T8 x) R# \# Lstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base $ ^( A w! k/ k+ c& B, B
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
9 \! q/ I& ~$ m$ o' y" D6 sAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase , {1 U4 {3 y( V/ }
the differential for international graduate students.1 r1 f. f0 i$ s6 O; E1 n
7 N% U' `9 T# n9 {2 B4 |Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
- \2 z. p. l) Cincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
# i9 r$ M9 g# h! I220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students 1 O$ p. h. b# }5 }/ j# @
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At 6 T+ m& u1 F; M- i6 g( P0 [" E+ }7 j
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
+ g. j0 q9 J+ P5 ntuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
5 E Q+ o, \( P% dincreases once they are here.- T- V V8 p! s5 V( i( `8 c
1 {8 y8 @2 {# g3 S6 G W. UThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the ; F: }2 o0 w; z$ b6 ~8 T4 u
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I / a- t5 ]3 B4 s# V1 G2 T7 k0 u
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that 8 F( t3 B; Q9 h& Y
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
# o) j# _& X" C3 u; [increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
