7 B+ j2 v; k R% W& o. s3 dGood news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. $ e h9 @( o! g2 r0 T7 `

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
* w4 m+ g0 Z- Q! N x2 c/ K8 zCouncil met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
l) w h# [7 [: L C- C: ynews to report from that meeting.: V# L5 f0 E) L' W
' ?/ p+ i; a1 s5 A$ C
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current & H$ j. X# Q' ?
undergraduate international students from the increase to the
0 p/ k+ Q4 @4 f3 f9 Ydifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international 9 B ~) n$ W+ |" T. f& s
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
, m: x1 x- W/ a8 [9 I$ Atuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). O( v X4 J8 y- C5 }, s( D
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
: A5 i! j9 G5 q; zthe differential for international graduate students.
0 h& ^) W8 s0 b4 q; U5 a+ X. J* a3 n7 X
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an # a* V- M$ B1 J
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
4 ^& \8 I) z/ J) i* y220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students 4 [1 V9 ]3 P+ y
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At ( k5 }/ {6 O9 u0 n( g' G' M6 Y
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
i. w& e8 l- [5 A+ O, D7 dtuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected , x7 G% ], v1 y
increases once they are here.

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the 3 O" B1 C) o1 e: _* d7 i# Y
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
% s; i" O9 Q, E0 n% W9 Xwould like to say thank you to all of the international students that ) h! t; s2 ~6 j
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this . T" {/ a! D# c
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
