! ]2 e9 t. [9 u6 N- EGood news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
' e& Z( h4 c9 X. ?Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad 3 v" S( s I2 n$ ]% D
news to report from that meeting.

1 T6 j2 C; f# V! YFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current 9 t. O8 a5 C! _2 i% M6 z, u0 B
undergraduate international students from the increase to the
4 G* }" r. e. B+ f2 l, N# Wdifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international
& C) o6 R, U: O; Pstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
& w- X, R/ I& Ftuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
- e( L3 C2 @# ?3 d* i. J$ [3 E. `Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
0 C* L( M/ i: {! w1 V9 m. E4 |8 dthe differential for international graduate students.
7 s- _+ `4 }9 q, k& f4 J+ x, n4 g; b: B( h
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an 4 U8 W& r& G! e
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
0 ^! \% p1 \" E( X7 @! k! g1 Q220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students ; {& F; w! o$ X4 U: H5 b
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At % ?: S9 Y4 o/ D) Q0 \ J, v
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in 3 d0 G4 h& Q* P2 ?1 ~
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected 7 h7 t) |) S0 s! `2 W
increases once they are here.2 W+ I. j* M `! T4 ]
+ @1 L" c- k$ Y8 zThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the * Q) {+ N5 l6 v
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
$ k: E; R7 ^- l, O6 N6 r/ Rwould like to say thank you to all of the international students that 4 A8 k$ H) w0 d. F
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
* i* s+ [4 E" p1 iincrease. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
4 P" g. n* Z; c: [- Hhelp. Thank you.
