Dear International Undergraduate Students,

& ?# ]% G: q8 |3 S: QYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
/ ~3 g2 `6 w) ^/ B' M$ K7 ICouncil met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad ; s. d1 m* A8 Q+ W o
news to report from that meeting.
( f, {5 E3 x8 D4 A7 f% g! V$ R: s3 g: _" _! Z- s3 O
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
- p( X" y) o* C4 @9 _' A2 z" ~" ]6 Bundergraduate international students from the increase to the
* T) S* \1 c) f* N3 L3 P' k1 Sdifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international
$ n- \9 S) h4 L# l2 K3 z4 J) p. tstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
" D) O' n- n' d( X& R9 m% m( ^! N& atuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
# [) R6 ]* \/ {9 T% C E6 }9 jAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase 1 v( ?- A' K* P3 R M
the differential for international graduate students.
: T' V" g, n3 G* o4 ^# J
- R ^, K6 S! f% K/ @( I! \# ANow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
" G; t J+ A9 k0 ~$ P j+ w+ r+ xincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to ( C M# g1 l3 L: q
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
+ o- N8 D( O) r" O- B) ^) W" Dwill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At / U. F; `/ r: z g# @/ N
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
: V, @% \2 ^% z# M( C$ v1 P' Utuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected # u' I% v p4 c4 l
increases once they are here.

, L3 h; i. M" zThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
* E9 Z, y- e# q# W, y# @3 Yinternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I 0 _) x2 x7 [, F' \$ G+ G& ?

have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
