Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. 4 z( _( S0 S4 [; B1 Y- P9 c) ~

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties * W: W5 g2 B- I: _9 F
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad 0 b0 k" g8 ^) C" H% x$ u* I
news to report from that meeting.
/ A! o: @( P' o& n+ ?. h- K( p# T, F
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current $ E- h8 E8 Q* ]/ t4 @
undergraduate international students from the increase to the
- B3 K9 B4 P, }, g' v- ^" qdifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international
4 |1 Q2 z9 E: v: ostudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base ) a4 X5 b; H; R
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
4 m$ L5 u/ h0 r6 [4 Z7 d9 ]Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase 5 J c3 B9 y) e$ k- g
the differential for international graduate students.
! {7 _9 H- y8 K v. l
- g9 i$ t v+ H: h3 zNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
* I( e& t1 G2 T6 F, x% L& Iincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to 6 W1 d' {5 G1 V1 [9 ?( I6 j
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students 9 F, V1 R# V3 d) q
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
l7 ?) m7 \9 r1 |! Lleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in 6 O/ u. h, x% Q2 T4 w0 A
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
$ H8 J+ e% B1 K8 D9 @/ G; u! i' |increases once they are here.

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the 3 Q9 K+ o# y8 B# t( v+ W9 s9 m8 M
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I - V5 F( U* S/ O- w" b
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that

increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
