抗议学校助学金太少!

When arrived to Edmonton to start my graduate studies on 2004, me and  
9 N& V& A8 b2 E9 e% p# [( fmy friend rented a very nice, spacious and shiny 2-bedroom apartment  
! ?% e5 V, [' k7 B/ [in one of the Boardwalk's high rise buildings (Galbraith House) for  
$ s8 I* _" `9 i. Q680 CAD(everything was included), believe it or not the same apartment) T7 U% l# e* ]% U$ C* O
  
, z' q6 I+ L% v& a0 ris more than 1300 CAD now.(I still have a copy of the contract and for

While I was paying 340CAD/month for more than a year, I抦 paying  4 [! X- D. G: F5 V/ W
600CAD/month plus utilities right now, some thing around 700CAD/month.& y' m$ @% q4 Q

Other costs of leaving have also increased and the university  : N! {/ W+ r& [# {+ r* v! |
increases the tuition fee by few percent every year and international  3 P0 C7 Q. {# U: S( M  ^
differential fee was increased by almost 20% last year. Add to this,  
+ O* ~5 o7 l" v' |/ _the fact that the university housing has no more space for newcomers  1 J' I' b$ W9 D6 ]$ x
and most of the newly admitted students who applied for housing were  2 d, T8 C  X2 j$ g! A: |
asked to look for a residence on open market.
) J5 M8 c# q: Y7 U# N* O/ g3 f2 X
2 R9 K  R2 ~/ M2 i  o( JWhile the average cost of living for a typical graduate student has  5 l2 l& V7 W5 v5 p- f
increased by something more than 70% percent we are getting paid  9 ?# m9 V' I/ R' v' u
exactly for the same amount of money that we were offered in our  
! i0 Z) L) u& m8 j. k6 ?, fadmission letter (18000 CAD + 1500 CAD for international students  
* _* b  e8 E# ]0 q=19500CAD. What I get is something around 1000CAD/month!!! after  
1 q8 D& H1 a" t, Ttuition fee and taxes). To make the argument easy to understand just  6 j. T2 y. N( W
imagine that a new student gets the same amount of money that I am  
4 X6 w4 h' A' z' L+ [( Hgetting now and I was getting 3 years ago but he or she (like all of  
: [4 Q2 p" T! j( lus) has to pay twice as much as I was paying for housing when I was  
/ E$ B6 \" D' r( F4 t* @admitted and has to incur at least 70% more in average living costs.
% X! X0 ?$ u, y% H: k6 g2 l3 O
4 Y& b! R3 C5 q8 s! V* yAlso have in mind that Alberta is a rich province and University of  
* R2 j8 P& I: I* RAlberta has a remarkable record in absorbing various money and grants  3 h4 s; S% a- V( |& _6 s3 V7 s4 A3 {
from different governmental and non governmental sources and graduate  
1 w+ A' ^( a/ C' e& |students are the main pillars of research work at the university.
* L% x: q1 a9 `  a6 l0 M* p% @. M- J
My objective in bringing all abovementioned points in your attention  9 y. ^' \! x" m! }/ W# y$ V
is to question the adequacy of financial aid for graduate and  
# q: e! O% Y9 c! y" d8 M9 yespecially international students. Isn抰 it time for the GSA to take/ P- q: S8 v0 Q6 n# @
  ' N0 U' k3 p1 ^+ C+ L" R1 M: D
initiative in raising the issue of increasing financial aid for  ) e2 ?$ d) I4 e2 H3 k  W2 ?
graduate students so that the can afford this increase in costs?! H* s" z+ N& ~% F' V9 y* P

It is true. Nobody cares about the international students. They are just making money from us.
